THERE ARE NIGHTS when I wake up in a cold sweat dreaming I’m watching an endless loop of David Lynch’s Inland Revenue or Lars von Trier’s Dogville. They might not be the longest films I’ve ever seen at the cinema, but they sure felt like it. But then again, I’ve never sat through a Wagner opera. Can you even imagine what it must be like to watch something lasting nearly six hours. That’s like spending a whole day at work fidgeting. This week’s preview of his opera Parsifal (see G3 for details) even includes quotes from composers who were dragged to watch this thing as a kid. One of them, Max Reger, watched it aged 15 and spent the next two weeks crying. I’m not surprised, I don’t think I would ever speak to my parents again either. It’s funny though, but we wouldn’t bat an eyelid about attending an event that lasts six hours, providing it involves copious amounts of alcohol.

For example, Floor Wars (see G9), over two nights, lasts a staggering 15 hours, and conversely it’s the performers who spend most of the night fidgeting. Apparently they talk as well. To be honest I started getting lost when the ‘Red Bull BC One winner’ was mentioned, and gave up trying to understand once I read about the ‘1vs1 Bboy Battle’. Boy-on-boy action is where I draw the line. Instead I might try out the St Patrick’s Day festivities – even if I don’t walk with the parade, it should be easy to find (see G8 for details, plus G10-11 for a map of the route) – after all, it’s normally on a weekday and half the fun’s over by the time we finish work. Nevertheless, the participation numbers in the Threelegged Race (see G8 for details) grow and grow every year, despite the 2008 edition taking part in a blizzard, as does the final amount donated to charity. In a city where many events struggle to survive, it continues to go from strength to strength. One of the keys to this success, I guess, is making sure it doesn’t last six hours, although it did for one unlucky pair in the aforementioned blizzard!

Living Room

While the upper classes would call it a drawing room (derived from the word withdrawing don’t you know, when the women would withdraw to the living room after their ‘supper’, leaving the men to light their cigars, drink their brandy and generally screw up the world), the working classes call it a lounge (“What ... you live in an airport?”). It is left to the middle classes to simply uses living (or sitting) room. Coming from The Netherlands, however, this all sounds a bit old-fashioned. My grandma would tell me about the ‘Sunday room’, which was only used on Sundays or to receive guests. Kids weren’t allowed at all. But besides all that, Living Room is also the name of the performance group Recoil’s latest dance production. Combining dance

Performance Madame Butterfly

Set in Japan at the turn of the century, this tale of the doomed love of an American naval lieutenant and his young Japanese bride inspired Puccini to write some of his most sublime and beautiful music. and video animations, it might sound like a weird combination, but this is exactly what choreographer Tina Tarpgaard has done. Talking to InOut, Tarpgaard describes ‘her’ living room as “a room in motion, evoked not just by the dancers but also by an almost organically living video scenography”. The floor and walls start to move and the space begins to breathe. The collaboration with software artists isn’t new for Tarpgaard. “The core of this recent work is defined by the close relation between the choreographic material and motion sensitive video graphics,” explains Tarpgaard on Recoil’s website. “This very intriguing combination of expanding the motion of the body by choreographing light and darkness as well as the dancers, has been an exciting challenge to find a balanced combination between software art and the performer on stage. Through dance, live video and electronic sound, we create performances that aim to explore technology as an equal and interactive partner to the performing artist.” In 2003, Tarpgaard and composer Pelle Skovmand formed performance group Recoil, with the intention of establishing col-

Shakespeare Unplugged

Krudttønden, Serridslevvej 2, Cph Ø; ends March 24, performances at 20:00 on MonFri, 17:00 on Sat; tickets 95165kr, www.billetten.dk; 80 mins; in English; www.thattheatre.com That Theatre’s new play Shakespeare Unplugged proves that the bard is still very much alive today. Penned by the actors and director Barry McKenna, it takes place in a pub during a football match between England and Denmark. Confronted by a power cut, two fans (Ian Burns and Andre Jeffers) switch their attention to the lovelife of the barman (Adam Brix), teaching him how to woo his Rosalind in Shakespearean style, with a little help from the audience, which according to McKenna, is “a crucial element” in any Shakespeare play. Ole Kristensen and Jonas Jongejan are Recoil’s software artists. “We work with tracking technology and the intricacies of interactive software on stage because it enables us to create dynamic places and environments that depend on human presence,” adds Kristensen on Recoil’s website. “The dance should need the technology and vice versa to be interesting.” Dancers Nelson Smith, Siri Wolthoorn, Rumiko Otsuka and Jonas Örknér crawl over the floor and bite each other’s elbow (yes, really) while following the video animations on the floor. According to Tarpgaard, “this close relationship between body and space and how they mutually control or influence each other is a fascination Recoil has pursued from many different perspectives. Living Room is about the powerful and the powerless. A visual story about breaking free from pre-destined roles and respectively giving and taking space.”

Indeed, it’s currently the second most performed opera in the world, trailing only behind The Magic Flute. See it once and you’ll understand why. CS

Danish Dance Theatre, Dansehallerne, Pasteursvej 24, Cph V; ends March 24; Performances Mon–Fri, 11:00 & 19:00, Sat 17:00; tickets: 130kr, concessions 60kr; www.dansehallerne.dk Entitled ‘Heartbeat’ in English, this dance event looks at the experience of being young and in love with all the senses, going beyond intangible feelings into the realms of taste and smell. Teens are invited to have a drink with an aphrodisiac during the performance while seated at a makeshift bar on the stage. Only 35 audience members can attend each intimate performance, set up in a small space to emphasise the feeling of romantic relationships and close connections. AK

I cried for two weeks and then became a musician,” Max Reger, the German pianist and composer, later recalled. Celebrities had flocked to the opera’s premiere in 1882, and the music world was flooded with commentary on Wagner’s newest work. Some critics saw the work as a weakening of Wagner’s powers, but many musicians found something of the sublime in the score. Renowned composer Gustav Mahler wrote about the performance in letter to a friend in 1883: “I can hardly describe my present state to you. When I came out of the Festspielhaus, completely spellbound, I understood that the greatest and most painful revelation had just been made to me, and that I would carry it unspoiled for the rest of my life.”

Initially Parsifal was blocked from all stages outside of the German town of Bayreuth, where Wagner and his wife held complete control over the décor, costume and stage direction. When other theatres were finally granted permission to stage the entire opera at the end of 1913, over 50 performances were given at opera houses in Europe from January to August in 1914. Keith Warner, the artistic director at the Royal Danish Opera, has re-imagined Wagner’s masterwork, and his version of the dramatic production will be on view for the first time in Copenhagen. The sound of the spectacle rests on several experienced Wagner performers, including renowned tenor Stig Fogh Andersen in the title role of the knight Parsifal and Stephen Milling as Gurnemanz, the eldest knight of the Holy Grail. Usually cast in the role of the villain, Swedish baritone John Lundgren takes the role of Amfortas, the king of the Holy Grail, for the first time. Warner has been a passionate devotee of Wagner’s operas since the age of 14, when he saw Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. “Since then I’ve constantly read about Wagner, seen his works and thought about them, and the amazing thing is that my interest has never waned – indeed, as time goes on I become more and more interested,” said Warner in

Curated by Margrethe Floryan, the exhibition explores Bertel’s use of imagery relating to both Alexander the Great and Napoleon, as well as the Roman Empire. Bertel’s work combines images of power in ancient times with the symbols of power significant in the early 19th century. BF

Quite simply life-changing

an interview before directing The Ring Cycle at Covent Garden. This will be Warner’s last season as artistic director in Copenhagen, having submitted his resignation in January due in part to dramatic budget cuts. In writing Parsifal, Richard Wagner took his inspiration

from the 13th century epic poem Parzival, written by the German knight and poet Wolfram von Eschenbach. Ostensibly focusing on the quest for the Holy Grail and the knights of Arthurian legends, Wagner’s loose adaption draws on ideas about faith, compassion and eastern philoso-

phies such as concepts of Buddhism. Flower maidens, squires, a magician, a wild woman and a holy spear all make up some of the key elements of the dramatic storyline. As part of the audience of that first production, Claude Debussy thought the characters and

plot ludicrous, but wrote that musically the opera was “incomparable and bewildering, splendid and strong”. He added that “Parsifal is one of the loveliest monuments of sound ever raised to the serene glory of music.”

They are interested in the importance people place on the accumulation of objects, and how these collections become filled with personal, almost spiritual, meaning. The artists use photographs, installations, drawings, and science fiction imagery to comment on contemporary society’s attachment to objects. BF

This special exhibition features a large, gilded statue of Buddha from Japan, as well as drawings by old masters such as Rembrandt, Rubens, and Michelangelo. BF

Authority figures from the church and the state interact in strange ways on his canvases. The theatre is also an inspiration for Kivum. His paintings reference both stage sets in their formal composition, and the narrative played out upon it. BF

The King is alive! (Sort of ...) Elvis Presley in Concert

ICHAEL JACKSON, Bob Marley, Tupac Shakur and many other artists have managed to release best-selling albums from beyond the grave. However, not to be outdone, Elvis Presley shows why he is still the King, as he is the first artist ever to tour the world – post-mortem, that is. “A live concert to me is exciting because of all the electricity that is generated in the crowd and on stage. It’s my favourite part of the business: live concerts,” the King said a press conference prior to his record-breaking Madison Square Garden shows in New York City in 1972. During his lifetime, Elvis only performed in the United States and in three Canadian cities, leaving heartbroken fans all over the world. With the help of modern technology today, however, the King has been gracing international audiences and making the dreams of countless fans come true. Starting in 1998, the ‘Elvis Presley in Concert’ phenomenon has mesmerised millions of people worldwide and has earned a Guinness World Record as the first live tour headlined by an artist who is no longer living. And so, 35 years after his untimely death, Elvis is finally going to perform in Copenhagen. This unique multimedia event offers the closest opportunity for Danish fans to experience Elvis the Pelvis up close and personal. The concert is estimated to last two hours and features a 16-piece orchestra, a number of Elvis’s original band mates, former cast members, and the king of rock ‘n roll himself – or at least, some digitally re-mastered live footage of him. Most of the footage used in the show comes from the material shot for the MGM films Elvis: That’s The Way It Is (1970) and Elvis on Tour (1972).. Mega Elvis fans will be thrilled to know that footage from the legendary 1973 global television special Aloha from Hawaii, via Satellite also found its way into the show. So, in short, the concert is made up of Elvis’s finest performances from the biggest concerts of his career. This is exactly the period that ‘Elvis Presley In Concert’ intends to celebrate, as it projects the King at his very best, both physically and performance-wise. Also, it doesn’t hurt that these films were originally recorded in multi-track, enabling the producers to drop all the sound from the footage, highlighting the sweet vocals recorded by Elvis’s microphone. All the music heard in the concert production is performed live, with the obvious exception of Elvis’s vocals. Audiences and band members alike have claimed to forget that Elvis is in fact, not present, as the illusion is so life-like, satisfying Elvis cravings worldwide. So get ready to hear your favourite Elvis tunes, from the rock ‘n’ roll classic ‘Hound Dog’ to the love anthem ‘Can’t Help Falling in Love’. When he played at a sold-out Store Vega, the crowd must have been flummoxed by what exactly they had just witnessed. At his best, the Rugby-born musician was as soulful a voice as any you’re likely to hear, and even at his worst, he was teetering on the edge of sheer musical brilliance. Morrison stepped onto the scene along with a sizeable backing band and proceeded to quench the crowd’s thirst with the prolific ‘Beautiful Life’, a well-placed opener that set the standard for the night. Their visit to Copenhagen marks the release of their eleventh studio-record, Mr. M (2012) – another poetic addition to their rich discography.

Huset i Magstræde; 21:00; 100kr The Californian singer-songwriter offers an ambient, moody slant on folk-rock. Emerging at the turn of the millennium with his debut, Not the Way E.P. (2002), McCombs released two records last year, Wit’s End and Humor Risk. Both records fit the description of humble compilations of well-written ballads laden with vivid imagery drawn from the laconic tales buried deep within McCombs’s dreamworld. The latter record ups the ante with stronger riffs steadily rocking the boat beneath his wistful rhymes. A born performer, this is a must for any musicians reading.

Individuals and families who would like to take part and walk in the parade are more than welcome – the only requirement is that you wear something green. For those whose wardrobes are entirely bereft of the colour, there’s no need to worry – St Patrick’s Day hats and accessories will be available for sale at the St Patrick’s Day shop in the coffee tent from 13:00. While you’re there, order an Irish coffee or a pint of Guinness between 15:00 and 17:00 and you’ll get a free Tullamore Dew cap or Guinness-hat. There is also free face painting for the kids. Scottish bagpipe band Gordon Pipes and Drums will help to guarantee a festive atmosphere. Lasting about 40 minutes, the parade should arrive back at Rådhuspladsen a little before six. The day’s celebrations are focused on Rådhuspladsen, beginning at 15:30 with a selection of traditional Irish dancing by the Dark Green School of Irish Dancing, and music – provided by one of the top Irish bands in Denmark, Trad Lads – to get you into the spirit. I ROUGHLY WOKE UP three minutes ago, with my right foot stuck in some sort of intricately weaved Mexican trash basket and a brain used as a multimillion megaton nuclear bombsite/wasteland (let us say: Pitcairn island for sheer exoticism or Amager for the locals), but now I am in Nørrebronx nodding approvingly, if slightly bewildered, to a freshlycooked musical offer – all this in a three square metre studio. My head is tilted at a very awkward angle under a punishing mezzanine fitted for midgets, or creatures of the crawling kind, with flesh so unfamiliar and natural light that is almost of the translucent kind ... Phosphorescent carpets and overflowing ashtrays in the sink? Check. Thermo socks drying over the analogue keyboard/synth? Check. It’s eleven in the morning at the Copyflex headquarters and we are getting thirsty. We suddenly feel like climbing on top of organic architectural structures, preferably of the social housing kind, covered with natural grass, or walking through very steep artificial parks filled with billions of plastic flowers. However, as always, we get back to the music. “Sooo, what would you call this style of groove?” After 30 seconds of hazy hesitation, the answer comes back in slow motion: “Balkanic reggae dub with a dancehall vibe to it,” comes the definite answer. “And what is the title of such a miss smashed potato?” do I dare ask/

GET READY to shake what your mamma gave you because Floor Wars is here. This dance-based event over two days will sort the winners from the losers. Floor Wars aims to inspire both the newbies, as well as the professionals, of the break dance scene to network, exchange ideas and dance off against each other. Based around a 3 vs 3 breakdance battle, this event is arranged according to what the organisers call the ‘Great 8’ principle. Eight world-class crews will be challenged by eight other crews that are selected in a qualifying round prior to the main battle. The fantastic thing about this is that any crew therefore has an opportunity to enter the competition. The great eight crews include Denmark’s own world famous Natural Effects, who over the years have delivered some legendary performances at Floor Wars. Every time they have entered they have made it through to the finals, as was the case in 2006, 2007 and 2008. In 2006 they won first prize. Continuing to improve over the years, they will enter this time round with the Red Bull BC One winner, ‘Neguin’ from Brazil. Perhaps this may be the year for them to bring it home and take the title on home soil. The line-up also includes Fusion Mind Killer from Korea, De Klan from Italy, Melting Force from France, Mf Kidz from America, Tatanaka from the Ukraine, and Soul Mavericks from the UK. At 6pm in the foyer there is the ‘toprock bat-

tle’, whilst at 6:30pm in the main hall the ‘footwork battle’ will occur. At 8pm the main battle will begin. The judges for the 3 vs 3 battle will be Dyzee from Canada’s Supernaturalz crew, Buckingham from America’s Flexible Flave, and Nono from France’s Vagabond Crew. Nearly as important as the dancers themselves are the DJs that will be responsible for spinning the tunes. Like the crews, these DJs come from all around the world and include OneUp from France, Uragunn from Italy and Holland’s Panic. Floor Wars is organised by Breakpoint, a hip-hop community that formed to practice and develop the various dance forms of hip-hop such as breaking, electric boogie and locking. I DON’T KNOW everything about my husband, and frankly, I don’t want to know everything. We’ve been together eight years, and until recently I never knew that he was a big fan of biscotti. Big. I don’t even remember how the subject came up. He went on and on about the virtues of the crunchy moon-shaped cookies, and then came the whammy of all whammies: “But you’ve never made them for me.” It was like an arrow through the heart. At this point I think I should mention that this is a man who will not touch peanut butter with a ten-foot pole. This blows my mind, and not in a good mind blowing kind of way. To

the like-minded ladies out there who are about to enter a more serious, committed phase of your relationship, ask yourself: does he like peanut butter as much as I do? If not, you might want to think twice. But I digress. Never one to back down from a challenge that involves sugar, chocolate, and butter, I made biscotti. Boy did I ever. I mixed that dough as if my life depended on it. I shaped and baked rectangles of dough, sliced it, and baked it again. The result was pure deliciousness … and a husband who gobbled down slice after crunchy slice. Now if only I could get him to try one with some peanut butter spread on top.

Tucked away behind a hard-to-find door on the first floor to the right of a typical Copenhagen apartment, the restaurant is based around the concept of the dinner party with guests stepping into what appears to be a private apartment and then being utterly spoilt by their hosts. The monthly set menu costs 1,250kr and has a whopping ten courses, and you can tell them in advance of any food quirks you might have and they will personalise the menu for you. Terrific food, friendly and attentive service and a unique setting. 150 g chopped dark chocolate (or chocolate chips) 115 g unsalted butter 2 large eggs 225 g sugar 1 tsp vanilla 500 g all-purpose flour 80 g unsweetened cocoa powder 1½ tsp baking powder 1½ tsp sea salt (plus more salt for sprinkling SET OVEN to 180 °C. Melt butter and chocolate together, and then set aside. With a hand mixer, beat the eggs and sugar until light and fluffy, approximately 2 minutes. Add vanilla and chocolate-butter mix and combine. Mix in flour, cocoa, baking powder, and salt, just until combined. Add extra flour if dough is too sticky.

Divide in half. On a lightly floured surface form each half into a log. Place logs on a parchment lined baking sheet. (Sprinkle with sea salt if that’s your thing.) Bake 20-25 minutes. Remove and let cool 20-30 minutes. Reduce oven to 140 °C. Slice the rectangles into thick slices. Bake 15 minutes on one side and 15 minutes on the other side. Cool on wire rack. Note: if you like sweet and salty, sprinkle your rectangles with a generous amount of sea salt and press lightly into the dough. Also, these biscotti benefit from slightly overcooking. In other words, if you end up with slices that are a bit dark (ever so slightly burned) you will still be in excellent shape. The well-baked taste is a perfect complement to dark chocolate and with biscotti - the crispier the better.

There are also dumplings cooked in the Austrian way and delicious goulash among the many different servings to be had. All in all it is a rough and tumble sort of place that is elegantly primitive with charisma, heartiness and austerely excellent food that perfectly accompanies classic beers and wine. There’s live music Thursday-Sunday (22:00-late), the kitchen is open from 10:00 until late every day - serving a burger meal with pint for just 120kr - the pub caters to all sports fans, there’s a pool table in their back room where you can smoke, and upstairs there’s a new lounge area, which is the perfect place to relax with a view over Strøget. It’s an authentic taste of what the Emerald Isle was like in the 1980s in a pub totally devoid of concepts, themes, and DIY Irish pub kits. Drop by at 17:00 on Fridays for the traditional Irish music sessions which are rapidly gaining in popularity. BH

It’s the perfect place for sports fans to mingle, or for live music which it provides every day. It also serves food all day from 10am to 10pm, and diners can find peace from the music and sport on a table overlooking the walking street, or on the first floor balcony overlooking Amagertorv. BH The Globe Nørregade 43-45, 1165 Cph K; Opening hours vary, until 03:00 Fri-Sat Friendly service and good value food make this the perfect city pub, and it’s difficult to know where to enjoy your pint given the number of options. If it’s company you want, you might try the main bar, or a private function, the second bar; seating-wise pull up a high chair, relax on cushioned benches or lord it as a bishop for the evening; or go genteel in the library - a great place to cheat in the fortnightly quiz, the longest running in the city. EVER SINCE we officially stepped into the season of spring, and the sun slowly started to show its pretty face, I have been tripping on my toes to fulfil my inner craving and stop by Paludan Bogcafe. Paludan Bogcafe, with its refreshing twist of being both an eating place and a secondhand bookshop, has permanently established its indispensability in the hearts of every Copenhagener. In other words, people wait in line to get a place because it is constantly stuffed (so it is worth making a reservation, either via email or over the phone; they also have a direct email address if one wishes to contact them for a particular book). Whether it is inside during winter, or outside at one of the way too few tables during summer, it does not make a great difference. What does make all the difference, however, is the story of how they began. Founded as a mere bookstore/publishing company, the place has since transformed into a hip place where people go to satisfy their intellectual as well as material hunger. Entering through the golden doors, you firstly think that you’ve stepped into a private library, albeit with some remarkable exceptions. Because in this library you are allowed to eat, drink, and talk loudly. The café is divided between two different floors: the lower is mostly for people who are having a quick lunch, while the higher can be booked for study or a meeting place. Nevertheless, the rustic English furniture is perfectly executed on both levels, and the concept follows a clear red line that immediately yields a certain ‘feel good’ factor. Open for brunch, lunch, and afterwork drinks, Paludan Bogcafe manages to keep it real, both when it comes to the English style, but also when it comes to the unique variety of exciting dishes. Their menu offers the perfect recipe if you are in deep need for a break from your busy everyday life, or if you simply feel like indulging in a relaxing atmosphere. Offering an extensive menu that includes everything from fair-trade coffee, brunch menus, and sassy salads, to large sandwiches, warm dishes, and exquisite desserts, the hard part is the actual choosing. However, my favourite has to be the Caesar Salad – a classic that just never dies. Having tasted a lot of different Caesar Salads, Paludan’s Bogcafe is without a doubt the best place to go if you want a salad that looks as good as

it tastes. With its fresh ingredients, the salad comes with chicken, parmesan cheese, croutons, romaine lettuce, and pine nuts. Unlike so many other places, their many salads come in large portions served with home-baked bread and butter, so the possibility of leaving the place with a nagging hunger is close to zero. Another one of my favourites has to be the ‘Today’s Special’. Changing every day according to the available products of the current season, the dish of the day leaves you with the possibility of making a spur-of-the-moment decision. By

simply asking at the counter what the daily dish consists of, one is able to walk into a retro café without any expectations whatsoever – an impulsive choice that makes the visit not so much a trivial praxis of eating, but an experience that is worth remembering. Additionally, it is also crucial to mention that the intoxicating experience of dinning at Paludan Bogcafe comes with the pleasant twists that while you eat you can easily pick any book from the shelve and read in it. If you happen to like the book, you can even buy it.

The books come in a variety of prices: the cheapest start at 10kr, while the most expensive can cost around 200kr. The food, however, is also very affordable, and ranges from 79–119kr per dish. Mixing the old with the new, Paludan Bogcafe has managed to create a unique atmosphere where colleagues, friends, students, and families can gather to enjoy the company of each other and books. If you have not tried it yet, do not hesitate – book a table now.

rom the off, even before the film itself begins, Shame has created a rather unique air about it. It’s clearly a film about sex, but the marketing indicates an oblique approach that has little to do with titillation. London-born director Steve Mcqueen’s previous film (his debut) was similarly adroit in trumpeting its subject matter. Entitled Hunger, the film won great critical praise and numerous awards including a BAFTA for best newcomer. This followed McQueen’s accolades in his previous incarnation as fine artist, whose video works earned him commendations such as the Turner Prize in 1999. Shame, then, represents a celebrated and unique voice, embarking on that difficult second record. Brandon (Fassbender) is a relatively successful, mid 30-something working in New York. Something of a lone wolf, Brandon is perpetually single. This suits his lifestyle perfectly. His sexual appetite is unbridled, whether bedding dates and prostitutes, flirting, masturbating or facilitating any of the above, his actions are always sexually motivated. However, as an early comparison between Brandon and his obnoxious boss (James Badge Dale) demonstrates, he’s far from the slobbering slave to his loins one might associate with the term ‘sex addict’. Brandon is refined, charming and possessing of a quiet intensity that despite drawing people to him, threatens to devour him whole. His insatiable desire for sex is

The director’s cut of ‘Shame we can’t see what’s under the table’ is out next year forcibly put on hold when his younger sibling Sissy (Mulligan) comes to town needing a place to stay. Their volatile relationship threatens to usurp the calm of Brandon’s controlled environment. Her presence complicates the regularity of Brandon’s self-prescribed treatment for his addiction. Several elements out of his control, Sissy’s arrival, the discovery of certain on files on his work computer and a particularly challenging date - all conspire to send Brandon spiralling into his own private hell. Michael Fassbender is the soul and centre of the entire film. Present in every

scene, he tempers his cool exterior with well-judged humour and glimpses of vulnerability, allowing us access to this curious character. He performs fearlessly, freely exhibiting the gamut of emotions and physical demands that the part requires of him. Aesthetically he reminds one of a darker, weightier version of Ewan McGregor - emanating a constant sense of unpredictability and danger. Here he concretes his reputation as a rising force to be reckoned with; the buzz about him is wholly justified. It’s easy to imagine ten years from now he will be considered heavyweight, to be men-

tioned in the same breath as Al Pacino and Robert De Niro. His most powerful scenes are shared with the increasingly impressive Carey Mulligan (An Education, Drive). McQueen prefers to shoot them in long, unbroken takes that draw you in - allowing electric performances and and absence of cuts to lull you into the room with them. It’s an intoxicating two hours: a heady mix of suppressed emotions and unlimited desires. We’re invited to experience the inner life of this man - a surreal window through which to experience the world of this proud but damaged creature who

prowls the nighttime streets of New York City like a vampire. Ultimately the journey becomes purposefully suffocating, with McQueen and Fassbender skilfully conveying Brandon’s sense of entrapmentand inability to function outside of his addiction. Shame is a claustrophobic drama of intensity and urgency. It will make many recent films seem trivial and tame, a strange and unique beast indeed. It’s mature drama, bravely tackling complicated subject matter for those looking to experience something different. It’s original, visceral and disquieting - in the way only cinema can be.

he Ides of March is the 15th of March, according to the Roman calendar. Its historical significance comes from it being the date Caesar was stabbed to death in the Roman Senate. Supposedly, a seer predicted the death of

Caesar by this date. Shakespeare famously depicted this event in the play Julius Caesar. The film The Ides of March is aptly named, for it depicts the death of idealism in American politics through the more metaphorical backstabbing that takes place. The story is adapted from a play by Beau Willimon. The film follows the descent of Stephen Meyers (Gosling), an idealist working on the presidential campaign of Mike Morris (George Clooney). The story begins with the preparations for the Ohio Democratic primary. From there, we see how he interacts with his various colleagues and opponents. Initially, the film seems too sleek. Every character says just

the right, charming thing. It’s almost disappointing how perfect everyone seems. But then the plot takes a few unexpected turns, which creates intriguing conflicts. There are many parallels within the film that illustrate the hypocrisy of politics and people in general. The parallels range from the visual opening and closing of the film to what people say to one another. The dialogue is very well written and should be paid close attention to. The achievements of this film lie with its superb writing and star-studded cast. The situations created within the film are all very real possibilities. The actors all deliver very strong per-

formances. The film is completely character-driven, so this point is important. The cinematography is also well done; the shots are well chosen and thought out. The film is ultimately very effective at delivering its message. The film represents politics very well. From the outside, politics and politicians appear too perfect. Politicians know just the right thing to say and have to look the part. But as we delve deeper into the story, we realize that not everything is, as it seems. Eventually it comes down to what one values the most. Are politics worth the sacrifices and compromises required to succeed? ELIZABETH DELLAPENNA

Dir: Clint Eastwood; US drama, 2011, 137 mins; Leonardo DiCaprio, Naomi Watts, Armie Hammer, Judi Dench; playing on Mon in Grand Teatret Even 137 minutes isn’t nearly enough to encompass roughly 50 years of one of the most interesting figures of the 20th century. At the same time, 137 minutes is much too long for a film that never digs deep enough to uncover anything profound. KE

Directed by McG, this film shifts with random bursts of energy. The script is mediocre, and the settings are off. The only pleasure comes from watching Bronson and Captain Kirk fighting over Legally Blonde. MH

Project X (15) Dir: Nima Nourizadeh; US comedy, 2012, 88 mins; Thomas Mann, Oliver Cooper, Jonathan Daniel Brown At 88 minutes, the film manages to outstay its welcome, playing like an overlong episode of The Inbetweeners with 100 times the budget and none of the charm. It’s big, loud and pointless. It’s probably going to be massive. MW

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (11) Dir: Tomas Alfredson; UK/Fra/ Ger thriller, 2011, 127 mins; Gary Oldman, John Hurt, Ciaran Hinds, Colin Firth, Mark Strong, Kathy Burke, Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Hardy Atmospheric and stylish yes, but this has to be the most un-thrilling thriller of recent memory. My Week With Marilyn (3) Dir: Simon Curtis; US drama, 2011, 99 mins; Michelle Williams, Eddie Redmayne, Kenneth Branagh It is rather difficult to portray an actress whose image is still so ‘alive’. Williams captures the innocence, flirtation and insecurity of Monroe very well, delivering a complex performance. However, Williams never seems to fully exude the sexuality of Monroe. That was the message of this film, that Monroe was different in real life than her worldwide image. Nevertheless, Williams lacks the natural sexuality that Monroe always projeced. ED

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (11) Dir: Stephen Daldry; US drama, 2011, 129 mins; Tom Hanks, Sandra Bullock, Thomas Horn If you’re a moviegoer who enjoys having your heartstring plucked like a bluegrass banjo, this is the king of movie you will be gushing over this while drinking double mocha non-fat cappuccinos with your friends. Safe House (15) Dir: Daniel Espinosa; US action, 2012, 117 mins; Denzel Washington, Ryan Reynolds If you’re a fan of good, dynamic directing, Washington’s darker, more menacing characters, and Reynold’s bruised face, you will like Safe House. DC

The Artist (3) Dir: Michel Hazanavicius; Fra/Bel dramedy, 2011, 100 mins; Jean Dujardin, Bernice Bejo, John Goodman, James Cromwell It’s difficult to see why this film is being championed so highly. Many will defend it by claiming that detractors are put off by a lack of colour, dialogue, explosions and other contemporary mainstays. But really their efforts would be better spent lauding Chaplin’s Modern Times or Murnau’s Sunrise. MW

The Iron Lady (3) Dir: Phyllida Lloyed; UK/Fra drama, 2012, 105 mins; Meryl Streep, Jim Broadbent, Olivia Colman, Richard E Grant From the first frame there’s a growing awareness that our perceptions of this woman are being gently and skilfully manipulated by director Phyllida Lloyd and screenwriter Abi Morgan, so much so that regardless of your political persuasion you’d have to be resolutely stubborn or emotionally retarded in failing to be moved by this biopic. Nevertheless, Margaret Thatcher is full blooded; she lives and breathes before your eyes. This film belongs entirely to Streep. MW

The Descendants (7) Dir: Alexander Payne; US dramedy, 2011, 115 mins; Geore Clooney, Shailene Woodley, Amara Miller Despite the nominations, Clooney delivers a performance we’ve seen many times before. LD

Sherlock Holmes: A The Woman in Black (15) Dir: James Watkins; UK/Can/ Swe horror, 2012, 95 mins; Daniel Radcliffe, Ciarán Hinds, Janet McTeer Radcliff is taking the scare level up a notch from the Harry Potter movies with this British ghost story, where he plays a young lawyer, who travels to a remote village and discovers a vengeful ghost. Horror movie enthusiasts might not find this to be the scariest of scary movies, but if you have a less thickskinned significant other this is the movie to watch. MØ

John Carter (11) Dir: Andrew Stanton; US sci-fi, 2012, 132 mins; Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins, Samantha Morton, Mark Strong John Carter is enjoyable, but not memorable. Somehow it feels that Disney should stick to what Disney does best - animations - and leave live-action films to others. But if you don’t mind formulaic plot devices and only crave a bit of light-hearted entertainment, it’s a pleasant enough way to spend two hours. DC

Jiro Dreams of Sushi (3) Dir: David Gelb; US documentary, 2012, 81 mins; Jiro Ono, Yoshikazu Ono Jiro Dreams of Sushi is the story of 85 year-old Jiro Ono, considered by many to be the world’s greatest sushi chef. It gives a penetrating look at traditional Japanese culture and is a tasty treat for sushi snobs. MH

A TORTURED GENIUS, a celebrity recluse, and antagonistic beyond belief – love him or loathe him, there were few chess champions as entertaining as America’s Bobby Fischer, whose 1972 defeat of Soviet grandmaster Boris Spassky in Reykjavík captured the imagination of the entire world – not bad for something played on a small board with inanimate objects. The documentary Bobby Fischer against the World (DR2, Tue 21:00) provides no new revelations for those knowledgeable about the chess player to enjoy, but for the uninitiated, it’s a fascinating tale of one of the game’s finest ever players, who poignantly in 2008 died in Reykjavík, the scene of his greatest triumph, aged 64 – one year for every square of the chess board.

The revelations in Panorama’s Murdoch’s TV Pirates (BBC World, Sun 22:30) will be thin on the ground as well – or at least in terms of information that might shock you post-Milly Dowling. Phone hacking, bin rummaging and honey-traps – all so the nation could vegetate on their way to work without ever finding out where Darfur is. A bit like the characters in GCB. With a passable 56 rating on Metacritic, it’s about a former high school queen bitch, now widowed and returning to her teenage environment in her 30s. Elsewhere, donate cash to British charity show Sport Relief (BBC Ent, Sun 18:00); catch again the first episodes of British crime series Death in Paradise (SV1, Sat 21:30) and The Shadow Line (SV2, Fri

22:15), US legal drama Suits (SV1, Sat 22:30) and the second season of Downtown Abbey (DR1, Sun 19:50); the Guardian found The Private life of Pigs (DR2, Sun 21:30) “hilariously gross viewing” thanks to its airing of “the world’s longest ejaculation”; after a strong first series, the second season of Eastbound and Down (SV2, Mon DR2, Tue 21:00 Bobby Fischer against the World 22:45) is merely gross viewing; and among the films this week are the bland Ripley Under Ground (SV1, Tue 23:40), the in-jokey, blokey The Expendables (SV4, Sun 21:00), the laughable but timely 2012, the promising but ultimately disappointing What doesn’t kill you (DR HD, Sat 23:55) and the mystifyingly bad Echelon Conspiracy (DR HD, Thu 21:10).
