I WOULD only own a car if absolutely necessary. I’m not the kind of person who sees it as an extension of myself. I and an automobile have never been on first name’s terms. For many, they’re an addiction, a love affair and an extension of the penis. The way we drive is a good indicator of our actual mental age: boy-racer in most cases. Like women, we pamper and caress them, and in turn they make us childish and irrational. Unlike women, they never refuse to have sex with us: whether it’s procreation (vital errands) or masturbation (pleasure drives). And what is it about car bores and all those frigging Jaguar numbers? Although you can’t deny they’re useful if you have a query about whether the local mechanic will tamper with your engine to ensure you’re back within a week. Anyway, despite these aversions, I still often find myself watching Top Gear (see G9 for details of its live shows at Forum) – particularly the bit when the celebrity drives the timed lap. It’s a really well made pro-

gramme, and it’ no surprise that the original version is the BBC’s biggest export and that its concept has been franchised the world over. Jeremy Clarkson is a curious case in that he is a journalist who applies his sense of humour to everything, but he’s not a comedian. I enjoy watching him on these panel shows with really left-wing comedians, as they clearly dislike him and his views and his attempts to be funny, but are clearly apprehensive he might lamp them after filming. A bit like how many might feel before a night out in Glasgow – see G2 for details of our evening of Scottish literature and political debate at Copenhagen’s main library – but in the end a couple of pints soothes the nerves, a couple more loosens the tongue and another two leads to a rousing rendition of Del Amitri’s ‘Don’t Come Home Too Soon’ - together a perfect anaesthetic for the impending concussion. Talking of libraries, our restaurant review this week is of the Black Diamond’s Søren K (see G13), but if that’s too pricey, maybe you should try out another round of March stock clearance sales (G8). Which is exactly the kind of event where a lovely little runaround comes in handy, although in this country, it’s a luxury right up there with the worst excesses of Imelda Marcos.

Scottish Night at the Library

Hovedbiblioteket, Krystalgade 15, Cph K; Fri 16:00; free adm; www.bibliotek. kk.dk PLANS TO SHIFT Scotland’s focus away from the UK and towards the Nordic countries have been drawn up by the Scottish National Party. But how Scandinavian is Scotland? Well, the climates aren’t too dissimilar. The cities of Edinburgh and Glasgow are almost exactly on the same line of latitude as Copenhagen and Malmø. Horns, no not the horn, feature prominently in the iconography of both sides, although it’s generally agreed that the Viking helmets were conical. They do like a good detective drama. Taggart is popular in Denmark while The Killing and Wallander do well in Scotland. “Also, our languages are very alike,” claims Lea Fløe Christensen from Copenhagen’s Main Library. “Scottish Gaelic has a lot of similarities with Danish.” Reasons enough for the very same library – the one in the centre of town, barely a minute’s walk from Abigail’s and Filostræde – to invite four Scottish poets and writers for an evening of readings and discussion. Performance Madame Butterfly

Set in Japan at the turn of the century, this tale of the doomed love of an American naval lieutenant and his young Japanese bride inspired Puccini to write some of his most sublime and beautiful music. Allan Wilson and Kirsty Logan from Glasgow (understand these accents and you’ll have no bother, ye ken), William Letford from Stirling (a little more understandable) and India-born Raman Mundair (grew up in Manchester, so no need to worry) will all dive into the political situation of the country. Scotland can best be described as having a multi-party system. In the Scottish Parliament, the centre-left, pro-independence Scottish National Party (SNP) is the party that forms the government, currently holding a clear majority of seats in the parliament. An independent Scotland would shift much of its attention away from the UK to become a member of the Scandinavian circle of countries, with its own army, navy and air force modelled on its Nordic neighbours, according to plans from the SNP. So will the Scots be at peace with their tweed and tartan pattern, or is Scotland on the way to becoming a new part of Scandinavia? Shakespeare Unplugged

Penned by the actors and director Barry McKenna, it takes place in a pub during a football match between England and Denmark. Confronted by a power cut, two fans (Ian Burns and Andre Jeffers) switch their attention to the lovelife of the barman (Adam Brix), teaching him how to woo his Rosalind in Shakespearean style, with a little help from the audience, which according to McKenna, is “a crucial element” in any Shakespeare play. Do they write national patriotic hymns, or do they turn their literary gaze elsewhere? “We don’t know very much about Scottish literature or the political situation in Scotland,” Christensen said. “So we’ve invited these four writers and poets, all interesting in their own way.” William Letford, for example is a roofer by day, a poet by night. And Raman Mundair, who, even though her primary language is English, uses Punjabi, Hindi, Urdu and Shetland dialects in her poems. Luckily for those who ‘cannae’ understand the Scottish accent or dialect (Scots would probably say there is no such thing as a Scottish accent or dialect), there is no need to worry. “They promised to talk slowly though,” she said. To give the evening an extra Scottish twist, the evening will be accompanied by a small Scottish treat. However, don’t be disappointed if it’s just crisps. “We tried to find Scottish snacks, but couldn’t find any,” Christensen said. “Apparently they don’t even have their own snacks.” What a shame.

THE EMERGING young talent from the Royal Danish Theatre Opera Academy take to the stage this month to perform Mozart’s Don Giovanni in the intimate setting of Takkelloftet, the small stage, or ‘black box’, tucked behind the main stage of the Opera House. It’s a hugely exciting prospect getting a glimpse of the graduates - and no doubt some of the future stars of Royal Danish Opera - perform such a complex opera at such close proximity, and it somehow seems fitting that such a youthful cast should take on the work of one of the world’s best known child prodigies. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, born in January 1756, was at the ripe old age of 31 - only four years away from his death - when he wrote the music for Don Giovanni in 1787. By then of course he was hugely famous having composed his first piece

at the age of five, toured Europe performing in front of royal courts and influential composers from the age of six, and written the opera Mailridate, re di Ponto at the age of 14, and become a court musician to the ruler of Salzburg at the age of 17. However, of the 600 plus works he composed, ‘Il dissoluto punito, ossia il Don Giovanni’, which translates to ‘The Rake Punished, or Don Giovanni’ is seen as one of his greatest successes and remains today the seventh most-performed opera world-wide. The two-act opera with an Italian libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte tells the story of a young, arrogant, sexually promiscuous nobleman who abuses and outrages everyone and everything until he finally meets his match. The first act sees him seduce a roll-call of girls (in the song ‘Madamina, il catalogo e questo’, Don Giovanni’s servant tells one poor spurned lover that his conquests include 640 in Italy, 231 in Germany, 100 in France, 91 in Turkey and a whopping 1,003 in Spain). He gradually makes an enemy of almost every member of the cast who in act two try, yet fail, to take their revenge. In the end it is a statue of the Commendatore, which having come to life and asked Don Giovanni to repent, drags the unremorseful nobleman

Hers is “a room in motion, evoked not just by the dancers but also by an almost organically living video scenography”. The floor and walls start to move and the space begins to breathe. MH

is subject to change) sees Waltteri Torikka, a rising Finnish star, play Don Giovanni, Jakob Vad as his servant Leporello, the Swedish bass Henning von Schulman as Commendatore and Henriette Neess Borup, Stephanie Lippert, Cornela Beskow, Hallvar Djupvik and

Olga Nikolskaja-Heikkila among Don Giovanni’s foes. It promises to be a celebration of youthful talent and a unique performance that shouldn’t be missed.

Pretty men, classical music and passionate love songs – if that’s your thing, it doesn’t get any better than Il Divo’s David Miller, Carlos Marin, Sebastien Izambard and Urs Buhler

l Divo, which means ‘the star’ in Italian, was hand-picked by musicmogul Simon Cowell and formed in 2003 for fans of classical music and timeless love songs. A classical version of Cowell’s other, more poporientated manufactured act, Westlife, Il Divo is made up of four distinct personalities and nationalities: Spain’s Carlos Marin, America’s David Miller, France’s Sebastien Izambard and Switzerland’s Urs Buhler. “I think the magic is that we come from different countries and have backgrounds – opera, pop, musical theatre – that are so varied,” Marin

says on Il Divo’s official website. “This is what is unique about Il Divo. You put us together in a shaker and it’s like this molotov cocktail – a huge explosion of vocals.” So let’s take a closer look at this ‘fab four’, shall we? After all, their individual personalities seem to be the key to their massive appeal. Known as ‘the passionate one’ Marin is a baritone and the oldest of the group, aged 43. He is no stranger to show-business and his talents encompass opera, pop, musical theatre, stage and television production, presenting, and acting. Ever the precocious artist, his first performance took place in Germany – where he was born – where he performed in front of 800 people at the green age of 10. Miller, ‘the forceful one’, is 38 years old and a tenor. Like Marin, he also discovered his passion for music early

on, with his first performance taking place in his teens in Colorado, where he sang musical theatre. He studied the harmonic spectrum of operatic voices for five years, at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Ohio, and has appeared in opera productions in North America, South America, Europe and Australia, including Baz Luhrman’s production of Puccini’s La Boheme on Broadway. Pop sensation Izambard is 38 years old and has earned the reputation of being ‘the sensitive one’. Unlike the rest of the Il Divo crew, he is an untrained musician who learned to play by ear. He is now a talented and respected songwriter, guitarist and pianist. Prior to Il Divo, he released the acclaimed pop album Libre, which produced the French chart-topping single ‘Si Tu Savais’. And last, but certainly not least, is Buhler, ‘the studious one’. A 40-year-

old tenor, Buhler is as dynamic as they come. Already at the age of five, he joined the choir of his home town of Lucerne and began to learn how to play violin, clarinet, piano, guitar and drums. Later on, he fronted a heavymetal band – yes, a heavy-metal band – while at the same time studying at the music academy. He also studied singing at the Sweelink Conservatorium in the Netherlands, appeared at the Salzburg Festival and earned an illustrious reputation as an operatic tenor at the Netherlands Opera and many other opera houses across Europe. Apart, they may have been considered as lacking ‘star quality’. But together, these four seem to be unstoppable, having sold over 25 million albums and 2 million concert tickets. They are responsible for Ancora, the only crossover classical album to ever enter the US Billboard Top 200 at number one. Add-

ing to their collection of achievements, Il Divo also earned the honour of being named ‘Artist of the Decade’ by the Classic Brit Awards – the annual showcase for the UK classical music market – in May 2011. Their anticipated Copenhagen concert will surely take the breath out of many fans, who will get the chance to hear songs from their new album, Wicked Game, which was released in November, and other hits such as the band’s take on Tony Braxton’s ‘Unbreak My Heart’ and Abba’s ‘The Winner Takes It All’.

t is 21:07 and the crowd is buzzing. Four musicians walk onto the stage and head to their instruments - a keyboard, a guitar, a bass and the drums. I wonder, for a second, whether Mark Lanegan has arrived, then look to the far left of the stage and see his unmistakable silhouette make its way to the microphone stand. I ask myself how any man could walk so charismatically but before I have time to ponder any further, the show is on. With no need for introductions, pleasantries or any other stage-shenanigans, ‘The Gravedigger’s Song’, from his latest album, Blues Funeral, blasted through the speakers. The crowd was ready and so was I. I’ve known of Lanegan for a long time – his debut with the Screaming Trees, his extensive solo work, as well as his time with Queens of the Stone Age, Isobel Campbell and Greg Dulli – but I

Slam & Loppen present: Action Bronson, Danni Toma, J-Spliff and others

Loppen; 21:00; 160kr A New York rapper of Albanian descent, Action Bronson – who takes his stage-name from the Chicago gangster William ‘Action’ Jackson – will be headlining tonight’s hip-hop gig. Likened to the rap great Ghostface Killa, this oversized MC made his breakthrough on the back of the release of his controversial yet imaginative album, Dr Lecter in 2011. A wealth of other rising stars will buffer his show, including Aalborg-born rapper Danni Toma and the Danish hip-hop jazzman himself, J-Spliff. Rap heads don’t want to miss this gig. have never seen him perform live. Dressed in black, Lanegan was as low-key as possible, yet his presence was striking. And his live vocal skills were passionate, genuine and flawless. By the time the band played ‘Hit the City’, Lanegan’s magical duet with PJ Harvey from the 2004 album Bubblegum, the sold-out venue was bubbling. I had high hopes of hearing the song – one of my favourites – and everything was as it should be. Harvey’s haunting vocals were missing, but Lanegan’s singing did not disappoint. The band was tight and the sound quality great – no feedback or other distractions. Just when things couldn’t get any better, the familiar bass-riff of ‘Wedding Dress’ lifted the venue, and myself, to cloud nine. Lanegan’s performance was a reminder that music is what really matters. The stage-lights remained uniformly pink and blue, the band didn’t have any fancy gimmicks and Lanegan barely moved from his original spot. It is a rare concept these days, relying on the music to do the entertaining, but any true Lanegan fan is bound to embrace his artistic

Pumpehuset; 21:00; 200kr This hip-hop trio representing Kentucky and Georgia have been strong players on the indie and alternative rap scenes for over a decade now. Their debut Will Rap for Food (2001) was warmly received by critics and hip-hop fans alike. The lineup has changed a bit since the group’s inception, with founding members Deacon the Villian and Kno now being joined by Kentucky emcee Natti. CunninLynguists have worked with some of the biggest names in the game, especially fellow Atlantans Cee-Lo Green and the Goodie Mob.

Emergenza Festival Semi-Final

Lille Vega; 19:00; 85kr Monday night is the first of several semi-finals of this year’s Emergenza Festival – a music competition that takes place in a total of 150 cities in Europe, Japan, Australia and the US – with gigs running throughout the week. The Naked Choir will begin their set at 19:30 followed by a further seven national acts who will have 30 minutes to impress the panel of judges. Eventually a winner will be decided at the Danish final at Store Vega on May 19, who will then go on to represent Denmark at the Nordic finals and hopefully at the international final in Germany later this year.

Ben Webster Prize 2012: Jan Kaspersen

Jazzhus Montmartre; 20:00; 325kr (students half price) The Ben Webster Prize is Denmark’s most prestigious jazz award and on Wednesday evening – fittingly held at what was once the American jazz legend’s second home, the Montmartre – will see veteran Danish pianist Jan Kaspersen honoured. Kaspersen has been a fixture of the national jazz scene since the 1960s. In addition to his musical talent, he is known for his spectacular image and wacky outfits. He will be performing with his so-called dream band – this is definitely an evening for the jazz aficionados in town.

No gimmicks, no smoke, just low-key whiskey heaven

approach and admire the purity behind his whiskey voice. The show went on in a lowkey fashion, the musicians playing and the crowd being led through various moods by Lanegan – from the dreamy, melancholy vibe of songs like ‘One Hundred Days’, to the full-blown rocking-style of ‘Quiver Syndrome’. As I looked around, it was a much more mature audience than I am used to, no teenagers in sight (a pleasant change), and no mosh-pit in front of the stage, even when the pace picked up. The encore was as sudden as

the start of the show. The band left and came back so fast, it was like they never left. Three more songs for an eager audience, ending with ‘Methamphetamine Blues’, with the lyrics “I don’t want to leave this heaven so soon” perfectly describing my mood. The band left the stage and announced that Lanegan would be signing CDs. A whiskey shot later, I left with my autographed copy of Blues Funeral in hand, and a cathartic smile on my face. Culture Box; Fri 23:00; 70kr Based in Stockholm, Rashim remained largely in obscurity until the release of his self-titled debut record, keeping his profile low and playing only select sets. Although not much is known about Rashim (just look at his publicity photo above, for Pete’s sake), he is nevertheless making waves across the continent with his hypnotising brand of techno – as the growing popularity of his cavernous, off-key techno tune ‘Asayita 1’ testifies. He is now signed to the major label Berlin Label Prologue. With another three DJs supporting Rashim’s headline set at Culture Box, beats will be aplenty, keeping the hundreds of pairs of feet moving until the early hours of Saturday morning.

With a career that has spanned over 50 years, during which time he has released innumerable records, singles and collaborative albums, he has become one of the most talked about musicians in media history. This time around, Russell will be pairing up with Bill Champlin, an ex-member of the American rock group Chicago, and Joseph Williams, the former lead singer of Toto, alongside an all-Danish band. Karen Blixen – who just like Kamma Rahbek was a lover of flowers – was born at the farm in 1885, and when her Kenyan farm went bankrupt, she returned in 1931. Here she lived until her death in 1962, and the rooms are much like she left them – furnished bright and classy. Karen Blixen is probably best known for her authorship, which was accomplished at Rungstedslund, but the gallery in Karen Blixen Museum bears witness to a multifaceted talent. She was also skilled in the arts of illustration and painting. Many of the motives in the gallery are inspired by the years lived out in Africa and several pieces of the furniture were brought to Denmark from her farm in Kenya.

In the white, minimalistic home, which Finn Juhl built all by himself between 1941 and 1942 and lived until his death in 1989, it is the furniture that defines the rooms. And you can try most of it out. Settle yourself in the dainty armchairs, resting chairs and lounges that each occupy a special position in the home. Experience the placidness of the working room, the fireplace lounge and the living room, which have a wonderful inflow of light, perfect for quiet contemplation. In the frame chair – for example – which was designed in 1953, you can sit in the opposite way, facing the backrest, which is equipped with a practical little frame whereupon you can rest your arms. In 2012 Juhl would have been 100 years old and Designmuseum Danmark is currently celebrating the centenary with a special exhibition. No visit is complete without a walk around the garden, the focal point of the building – indeed, most of the chairs are positioned along the windows and face out onto it. It was one of the great passions of Kamma Rahbek, who spent many a happy day in the garden. The main building has been a museum since 1925, while one of the two wings is accessible as a residence for people on scholarships. Presently it is the residence of the poet-couple Merethe Pryds Helle and Morten Søndergaard, but writers and poets alike can petition for the furnished apartment if their works show an interest in Golden Age literature and philosophy. Previous occupants include Søren Ulrik Thomsen and Solvej Balle, among others.

FOR THE FIRST time ever, the famously ludicrous and superbly entertaining British television programme Top Gear is coming to Denmark. Over the years, the show has earned a reputation for testing motor vehicles far beyond the conventional km/litre consumer requirements. Cars on the show have been transformed into boats, houses and trains, used in a race from Italy against a propeller plane, converted into a mobile helicopter landing pad, drowned and rolled. As a crew, Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond have used scooters to propel rafts in Vietnam, tested a Range Rover Sport’s performance on a tank testing ground and blamed the population decrease in Sheffield on the 1970s popularity of the three-wheeled Reliant Robin. Unfortunately, two blows: Richard Hammond is absent because he’s presenting Sport Relief; and they won’t be repeating the stunt in which they prove the durability of the Toyota Hilux diesel by placing it on the roof of a building about to be imploded. Instead, Jeremy Clarkson and James May will be recreating their unique brand of funny and judgmental commentary, replete with supercars and bizarre vehicle modifications at the stunt arena inside Forum. Ticket sales began on November 11 last year, and extra shows have been added to meet demand. Platinum level tickets include a backstage tour to get up close with the automobiles.

“Your name’s Stig and you live in a dump - pull the other one?”

Top Gear’s anonymous stunt driver The Stig will be featured, along with a great deal of pyrotechnics and certainly some destruction. The Stig was in Denmark in early March promoting the event in an Aston Martin Rapide. He drove to a track near Kastrup Airport, where he showed off his skill and gave rides to the daring. Anders Breinholt, the host of the late night show ‘Natholdet’ on TV2, will also join the live show with Clarkson and May. “I have always been a Top Gear enthusiast, and I believe that I have some stunts in me from my days as an ambulance driver. I am sure that it is going to be four crazy days in Forum, and that is all I am going to reveal for now,” he said in an interview for the event. Denmark has occasionally suffered in Top Gear for its stifling rules on automobile ownership. In July 2010, Jeremy Clarkson wrote a column about the Bo-

Cart, a Danish, more advanced go-cart, commenting: “In fact, on really, really quiet days I have found myself wondering what exactly is the point of Denmark?” But he has been informed now. “I like bacon. I like Bang & Olufsen. I like Helena Christensen. In fact, I can’t think of a single Danish thing I don’t like and on that basis I’m amazed we haven’t brought our live show to Denmark before,” he said when the event was announced in November. The exact model names of the supercars and adapted eccentricities on display have been kept under wraps for the event. Whatever turns up, there is sure to be plenty of fire and brilliant gems of commentary, as in the 2007 test of the Ariel Atom, where Clarkson summarises the benefits of not driving a motorbike: “I don’t have to wear a helmet, so my epiglottis is full of bees.” ALEXIS KUNSAK

AH, DANISH PASTRIES! Don’t you just love them, although sometimes you wonder whether there’s a bacon-like conspiracy and they export all the best ones abroad. Take the pecan and maple Danish for example: when I first moved here, I was expecting to find them everywhere, but instead it took me the best part of a year, and when I did, they weren’t a patch on the ones I’d buy in Tesco back in Britain. Still, every line, for during that time I discovered other equally delicious (well, almost) pastries, the pick of which must be the Kanel Snegls, which literally translates as cinnamon snails. Ah, yes, the incomprehensible-but-arrestingly-sweet-centred

Snegl. The much esteemed spirals of snow, visible in most lagkagehuse and other such patisseries, is typically sweet – and rightly so. There are, however, a number of alternatives for the Snegl if you decide to bake a batch at home: savoury ones, as well as sweet, are fantastic. Of course, in the same way that you can be creative and flexible with pizza toppings, so you can be with your snegls. Remember, however, that once you cut the pastries to an inch wide, you won’t want whole roasted artichokes sticking out of it, so ensure you cut everything up into small pieces. So, enjoy the sweet but bring on the savoury!

There were two highlights: the veal, pumpkin, mushrooms and potatoes with amazing truffle sauce (a “best ever veal experience”) and the chocolate cake (“Oh My God”), which was possibly the best chocolate cake ever! Roll the mixture with flour on a flat surface in a rectangular shape. Make sure you put plenty of flour underneath the dough to prevent it from sticking. Smear the tomato mixture over the dough, sprinkle with the grated cheese (keep a handful for later) and dried herbs, salt and pepper. Here you can add any other ingredients you wish! Carefully roll up the dough, going away from you. At the end either use water or beaten egg and seal the roll by pressing lightly along the joining line. With a sharp knife, cut the rolled log into slices about an inch thick. You should get around 8 snegls. Bake in the oven for 15 minutes. Just before the end sprinkle a little extra cheese over the snegls.

There are also dumplings cooked in the Austrian way and delicious goulash among the many different servings to be had. All in all it is a rough and tumble sort of place that is elegantly primitive with charisma, heartiness and austerely excellent food that perfectly accompanies classic beers and wine. There’s live music Thursday-Sunday (22:00-late), the kitchen is open from 10:00 until late every day - serving a burger meal with pint for just 120kr - the pub caters to all sports fans, there’s a pool table in their back room where you can smoke, and upstairs there’s a new lounge area, which is the perfect place to relax with a view over Strøget. It’s an authentic taste of what the Emerald Isle was like in the 1980s in a pub totally devoid of concepts, themes, and DIY Irish pub kits. If it’s company you want, you might try the main bar, or a private function, the second bar; seating-wise pull up a high chair, relax on cushioned benches or lord it as a bishop for the evening; or go genteel in the library - a great place to cheat in the fortnightly quiz, the longest running in the city. IN 1999, when the city of Copenhagen witnessed the opening of the waterfront extension of the Royal Danish Library, it was not just receiving a monumental addition to its archaeological heritage, but also witnessing the birth of a fine eatery. For those who haven’t already guessed it, I am talking about restaurant Søren K located in the Black Diamond. Within just 13 years, this cosy dining room in the library has earned a reputation as one of the top modern Nordic kitchens in the country. Just as the restaurant is not unfamiliar to the diners of the city, over the years the place has also acquainted itself with all the major food critics of the region. Having received many an accolade, the restaurant outdid itself when it was chosen as one of the Conde Nast Travellers’ top 100 restaurants in the world in 2001, merely two years on from first opening its doors. At a time when the current fanaticism of serving seasonal, local or organic was less prevalent, Søren K was the ‘stock-less kitchen’ that simply served a pick of the day. As a restaurant that has been ahead of the game from the beginning, Søren K has assumed the role of the mature patron who sets the trends and is now in the process of finding the next big thing. As I made my way, along with my dining partner, to the restaurant on my evening there, I couldn’t help being overcome by the magnificence of the building that captures you even more in the evenings when the atmosphere is rather tranquil. But stepping into the welcoming setting of Søren K, this majestic feeling is replaced with one of warmth and comfort, while the backdrop of the water adds a dash of romance to the ambience. Not a second too late, the waiting staff shows us to our waterside table. As we settled into our seats, placed in front of us was a serving of Marinated scallops in crown dild aquavit, served with mayonnaise and fried capers. Accompanying this scrumptious starter was a fine glass of 2009 Riesling Bollenberg Zusslin Alsace. As we devoured the last of the starters, I took a second to take in the outer surroundings of the restaurant. On the one side of Søren K spreads historic city of Copenhagen, with the various churches and towers filling the skyline, while to the other side is a display of fine modern architecture, proof of the growth and expansion of the city. The second course served to us was Turbot served in lobster bisque. For this creamy course we were poured a glass of 2010 chardonnay Sur la Roche, Macon-

Vergisson. While the fish was cooked to perfection, the creamy sauce complemented it perfectly to form a fine concoction that almost melted in our mouths. The main course was the Veal with sweetbread, smoked red onions, Jerusalem artichoke and sauce borderlaise. To wash it down was a 2008 pinot noir, vieilles vignes santenay, Bourgogne. For dessert, the smiling waitress served us a quince-chocolate fondant with dried raspberries and sea buckthorn sorbet. The beverage was a 2006 ganeche, maury. An elegant finish to a perfectly elegant evening.

At a time when many gourmet upscale restaurants are struggling, it was interesting to see that Søren K has no such problems. But unlike its competitors, Søren K is not about numbers - the seating has been limited to a maximum of 70 for a la carte menu. This in no way reflects the capacity of the kitchen of the restaurant. I was told that on a daily basis, the kitchen serves about 3,000 guests between lunch and dinner, with the kitchen also preparing the meals served in the café of the library during the day.

In short, Søren K has all the attributes one would expect of a modern Nordic gourmet restaurant with French influences, but what might take most guests by surprise are the prices. For a Nordic kitchen, that has just been officially given the Michelin Bib Gourmand, the prices are definitely affordable. This and its key location within the Black Diamond definitely puts the experimental kitchen at the cutting edge of excellent fine dining in Denmark.

The Italian Job for smugglers: formulaic but fun ELIZABETH DELLAPENNA

HOUGH MANY people may break a minor law here and there, most do not take major illegal risks. They are never truly exposed to the inner workings of illegal operations or the criminal world. That’s where Hollywood comes in - it gives us a chance to experience that kind of danger from the comfort of our theatre seats. Contraband is about a smuggler, named Chris Farraday (Wahlberg), who left behind the world of running contraband. He’s dragged back down into the smuggling underworld when his brother-in-law’s drug run goes wrong and the drugs have been dumped. The debt must be settled, one way or another. Farraday rounds up a team and heads to Panama to pick up and bring back counterfeit bills worth millions of dollars. The scenario is somewhat unusual in that it represents the world of smuggling. Films of the criminal nature typically represent robberies and there is a bit of that too. Though the concept is somewhat unusual, how many times are we going to see a criminal with a good cause, who asssembles a crack unit to avenge some injustice, all the time cracking jokes and dealing with mishaps? In some ways, it felt like The Italian Job or Ocean’s Eleven by having those ele-

And unlike Ocean’s Eleven, the film has more gritty realism. It’s less glamorous or glossed over than its predecessors. This effect was achieved, in part, because of the cinematography. There is a lot of handheld and the colours are a bit unsaturated, giving it a more washed-out look. New Orleans was also a good choice of location, especially since the city is still in the process of getting over the devastation of Hurri-

cane Katrina. It adds a good, gritty backdrop to the story. As for the acting, it’s not extraordinary - but even if it was, the plot does not really feature character development. Ultimately, the acting was good enough. The film focuses on the story and the surprising reveals of how certain things were accomplished. True to formula, it’s important that some actors have the right charisma, so we know which to like or hate immediately. Wahlberg is adequate in the role, playing the same

though we kind of know deep down that everything will work out for our hero, we’re not always sure how. The story is like a puzzle, but the audience isn’t given all of the pieces. Instead, we are given bits and pieces that tend to only make sense later on when we see their true meaning in context. We are supposed to be dazzled by the cleverness of the idea, as each accomplishment is revealed along with the realisation of what must have taken place. Still, overall it’s an entertaining experience.

And we are able to quickly establish him as likeable and the good guy, though that depends obviously on whether you like him to begin with. The writing also helped this film rise above its more Hollywood-esque rivals. For once, not everything works out as planned. This helped to build more tension in the plot and it definitely threw off the direction of where the film was headed. Many films feature everything falling into place immediately. Al-

in common, their reactions to this new environment are varied: some fall in love with the land of colour and life, where others find there’s plenty to moan about. Biscuit-loving Muriel (Smith), for example, is unapologetically racist, despite benefitting from excellent Indian healthcare; Douglas (the ever brilliant Nighy) is illuminated by India, while his wife Jean finds the journey intolerable; Madge (Celia Imrie) and Norman (Ronald Pickup) are more intent on getting a jump for their old bones. The list extends to several more characters including the young proprietor of the hotel, Sonny (Patel from Slumdog Millionaire). The form is by now ach-

ingly familiar and, thanks to the likes of Richard Curtis and chums, a mainstay of modern cinema. I am of course referring to the practice of taking a dozen or so of the best (or most fashionable) acting talents currently working, giving them each 10-15 minute’s worth of story and weaving them all into a two-hour multi-stranded narrative. Robert Altman’s Short Cuts (1993) achieved this masterfully whereas films like Crash or comedy dramas such as Love Actually and Valentine’s Day, did the same to arguably lesser effect. A nauseating tendency is to resolve all the story strands by predictably tying them up into a neatly contrived bow. Director John Mad-

den (Shakespeare In Love, Mrs Brown - also featuring Dame Judi) hasn’t broken the mould here, but it’s so agreeable, you almost forgive its contrivances. The authentic locations are magnificent. Nighy provides genuine belly laughs. Tom Wilkinson’s character Graham, who is searching for a childhood friend, provides a moving counterpoint to much of the high-jinks. It’s also a pleasure to see Dame Judi outside her restrictive Bond gig, providing proof she’s still got her sparkles. In short: a disappointingly familiar form with surprisingly charming content. It will make any recent films seem trivial and tame, a strange and unique beast indeed. It’s mature drama, bravely tackling complicated subject matter for those looking to experience something different. It’s original, visceral and disquieting - in the way only cinema can be. MW

The Ides of March (3) Dir: George Clooney; US drama, 2011, 101 mins; Geore Clooney, Ryan Gosling, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Paul Giamatti Initially, the film seems too sleek. But then the film takes a few unexpected turns, which creates intriguing conflicts. LD

Avoid like the Plague This Means War (11) Dir: McG; US com, 2012, 98 mins; Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine, Tom Hardy, Til Schweiger This Means War is about two spies who are close friends, and how they compete over the same girl. Directed by McG, this film shifts with random bursts of energy. The script is mediocre, and the settings are off. The only pleasure comes from watching Bronson and Captain Kirk fighting over Legally Blonde. MH

Project X (15) Dir: Nima Nourizadeh; US comedy, 2012, 88 mins; Thomas Mann, Oliver Cooper, Jonathan Daniel Brown At 88 minutes, the film manages to outstay its welcome, playing like an overlong episode of The Inbetweeners with 100 times the budget and none of the charm. It’s big, loud and pointless. It’s probably going to be massive. MW

Also Playing The Iron Lady (3) Dir: Phyllida Lloyed; UK/ Fra drama, 2012, 105 mins; Meryl Streep, Jim Broadbent, Olivia Colman, Richard E Grant From the first frame there’s a growing awareness that our perceptions of this woman are being gently and skilfully manipulated by director Phyllida Lloyd and screenwriter Abi Morgan, so much so that regardless of your political persuasion you’d have to be resolutely stubborn or emotionally retarded in failing to be moved by this biopic. Nevertheless, Margaret Thatcher is full blooded; she lives and breathes before your eyes. This film belongs entirely to Streep. MW

The Artist (3) Dir: Michel Hazanavicius; Fra/Bel dramedy, 2011, 100 mins; Jean Dujardin, Bernice Bejo, John Goodman, James Cromwell It’s difficult to see why this film is being championed so highly. Many will defend it by claiming that detractors are put off by a lack of colour, dialogue, explosions and other contemporary mainstays. But really their efforts would be better spent lauding Chaplin’s Modern Times or Murnau’s Sunrise. MW

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (11) Dir: Tomas Alfredson; UK/Fra/Ger thriller, 2011, 127 mins; Gary Oldman, John Hurt, Ciaran Hinds, Colin Firth, Mark Strong, Kathy Burke, Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Hardy Atmospheric and stylish yes, but this has to be the most un-thrilling thriller of recent memory. MW

Jiro Dreams of Sushi (3) Dir: David Gelb; US documentary, 2012, 81 mins; Jiro Ono, Yoshikazu Ono Jiro Dreams of Sushi is the story of 85 year-old Jiro Ono, considered by many to be the world’s greatest sushi chef. It gives a penetrating look at traditional Japanese culture and is a tasty treat for sushi snobs. MH

The Descendants (7) Dir: Alexander Payne; US dramedy, 2011, 115 mins; Geore Clooney, Shailene Woodley, Amara Miller Despite the nominations, Clooney delivers a performance we’ve seen many times before. LD

Somehow it feels that Disney should stick to what Disney does best animations - and leave liveaction films to others. But if you don’t mind formulaic plot devices and only crave a bit of light-hearted entertainment, it’s a pleasant enough way to spend two hours. DC

Williams captures the innocence, flirtation and insecurity of Monroe very well, delivering a complex performance. However, Williams never seems to fully exude the sexuality of Monroe. That was the message of this film, that Monroe was different in real life than her worldwide image. Nevertheless, Williams lacks the natural sexuality that Monroe always projeced. ED

THE DECISION to show Peep Show proved that if you wait long enough, your bus will come in, invariably followed by three or four more series, so here’s hoping the Beeb will follow suit with The Apprentice, which enjoys its Scandinavian premiere this Sunday. Unfortunately, it’s one of those tedious charity celebrity specials, but with a surge in viewers (on BBC Ent, that’s double figures), maybe the dullards responsible for this scrote of a channel might consider showing it all. Because, you see, while it’s reality television, unlike the singing contests, it’s genuinely compelling. And, dare we say, the British version is better than the US original with Donald Trump. Now in its eighth series, its trump card is Alan Sugar. Like his US counterpart, he’s an

unscrupulous bastard, but unlike Trump, you can take him deadly seriously without thinking about his trollops, toupee and tendency to run for office every other term. The subject of Susan Palin – you betcha! has none of these distractions, unless you of course include her daughter. But the plaudits are thin on the ground as well. With just 30 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, the New York Times found it “devoid of urgency and lacking in curiosity”. Like in previous films, Britain’s Nick Broomfield (Kurt & Courtney) has not interviewed his main subject – this time he doesn’t get away with it. The Argentine pilot in Meeting the Enemy (BBC World, Sun 15:30 & 22:30) did. Marking the 30th anniversary of the Falklands

invasion, we watch as he catches up with the British serviceman who thought he’d killed him. Also worth catching is Lessons in Hate and Violence (DR2, Wed 23:00), which investigates allegations that teachers regularly assault children at Britain’s Muslim schools - like in the good old days, some would say. Elsewhere, The Truth about SV1, Sun 19:30 The Apprentice - Sport Relief special Lions (DR2, Wed 19:00) reveals they’re lazy, The Private Lives of Chickens (DR2, Sun 21:30) that they’re an easy lay; The Big C (SV1, Sun 21:30) and In Treatment (SV2, Mon 19:30) are back for new series; we’ve got Combat Aircraft (DRK, Mon 20:50) for Airfix addicts; and office drama Personal Affairs (BBC Ent, Sat 22:00) only had one series – watch it and you’ll discover why.
