IT’S THAT TIME of year again. So many mugs, so many mugs! When will they ever learn – don’t put your winter coat in storage until May. I’ve said it a million times, and I’ll say it again: Denmark is a country of just two seasons: winter and summer. As the editor of this rag, this time of year is particularly painful. Every other piece submitted mentions spring in the opening sentence. They deliver the copy in advance on a pleasant day, but by the time the issue hits the streets, it’s snowing again. Our music listings writer is the worst culprit. He’s weatherobsessed (yeah, English, although to be fair, the Irish are the worst). He’s writing about events going on at one in the morning and harping on about the warmer climate, yet back in January, when the brass monkey’s nuts are a permanent shade of blue, the weather barely gets a mention at all. Is this what they call wishful thinking?

Last week, I had the temerity to suggest that people don’t celebrate the seasons as much in northern Europe as they do in other areas of the world. But maybe I’m wrong. This city is full of so many spring-glazed idiots that there must be an underground spring movement where they gather to whip each other with daffodils, tell anyone who will listen that Easter is actually a spring festival, and gush on about a season that doesn’t exist. And once again the events this week reflect the fact that nobody wants to go outdoors. There are no less than two new plays in English – the CTC’s The Good Doctor (see coverage on G3 and page nine of the newspaper) and Desdemona (G2), of which there will be a review next week – and BLACKOUT!, the final part of Mute Comp’s trilogy on crime. This time the focus is on drugs: the good ones and the bad ones. And nicely timed to mark the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic (see G20 for details of Julian Fellowes’s rubbish miniseries) is the release of the film Battleships (see G18). Presumably the distributor who chose this release week put their winter coat away on March 1.

BLACKOUT!

Dansehallerne, Pasteursvej 20, Cph V; starts Sat, ends 28 April, performances Mon-Sat at 19:30, also Wed 12:00; tickets: 75-145kr, www.billetten.dk, www. teaterbilletter.dk, 3329 1029; 70 mins; www.dansehallerne.dk, www.mutecomp.dk “THE STAGE during a rehearsal is like an anthill,” says Jakob Stage, one of the dancers and choreographers from Mute Comp, a dance company which is preparing for their latest performance piece with glee in their eyes, not giving much away about BLACKOUT! until the opening night. “The audience will be in for a couple of surprises,” he promises. It’s always a fantastic experience to see people completely involved with what they do: it adds a deeper layer to the performance and rings true with the audience. BLACKOUT!, the latest creation of the renowned Mute Comp, is the third and final part of the trilogy on the three biggest illegal economies: sex/trafficking, weapons and drugs. This instalment focuses on drugs and escapism. It explores the darker sides of human nature, our urges, repressed desires and their consequences. It doesn’t presume to judge or condemn anyone; it aims to present impressions and the experience in a brilliant, entertaining and dynamic show full of music, lights and smoke. All three parts of the trilogy are an “artistic interpretation of all the research that we’ve done”, says Stage - i.e. meetings with organisations (including NGOs) and individuals. In BLACKOUT! they focus on people who treat drug addiction, as well as people who use drugs, to form a complete picture and look at it from all possible perspectives. The creators draw on hands-on experience, including a trip to places like Goa in India, where the ever-present gurus offer Westerners an escape from reality and a better, ‘spiritual’ life to those who want to find themselves. For the members of Mute Comp, it was an eye-opening experience. It sits in the back of their heads constantly - it may or may not be incorporated into the show, but it will definitely influence the dancers and musicians and enrich the show. Even though it is a part of a bigger whole and a finalisation of three years of work, research and staging performances, BLACKOUT! is primarily an independent piece. It can be seen and enjoyed without any knowledge of the previous parts. However, there are subtle connections between the three.

Performance Desdemona – A play about a handkerchief

Told from the perspective of the three female characters from Shakespeare’s great tragedy – Desdemona, Emilia and Bianca – this ironic adaptation reveals the women’s plight for freedom and independence. Adhering cleverly to Othello’s plot, writer Paula Vogel hones in on the struggles of these women and the tragic fate that awaits them. See next week’s issue for a full review. EB

The drug dealer regrets her decision to keep her stash in her trousers

Anyone who saw Knock on Unpainted Wood (2010, sex/trafficking) and F.U.B.A.R. (2011, weapons) will perhaps recognise a movement in the dance, a colour or a certain attitude. Since they deal with similar topics they also share similar energy and atmosphere. It’s not necessary to know them, though, and furthermore the non-Danish speaking audience will not have any problems understanding. Mute Comp focuses on the performance, movement and music, universal elements and topics that are common to all people, and therefore cross national barriers. The performance itself is not a linear narrative, it’s an interaction between choreography, music, lights and smoke. They have done some “research into the light and how it can trick and influence our vision”, so perhaps it will make it into the final cut and the audience will get a chance to experience some otherworldly visions. However surreal it may be, though, Stage underlines that BLACKOUT! “does bear a resemblance to the reality, and echoes what is truthful, so that the audience can connect and relate to it”. The artists hope that it will help to form opinions about those topics, spark some curiosity. Nevertheless, their main goal is to

Kameliadamen (The Lady of the Camellias)

Inspired by Dumas the Younger’s novel from 1848, the same source the Greta Garbo film Camille and Verdi’s opera La Traviata are based on, the Royal Danish Ballet’s artistic director Nikolaj Hübbe calls it “one of [John] Neumeier’s most beautiful ballets”. Responsible for the music are Kirstine Stubbe Teglbjærg, MC Jabber and Dodebum, and they will also be performing it live on stage. They were hand-picked because their urban electronica reflects modern city-living and fits the idea behind BLACKOUT!. “The light, ethereal vocals and spherical soundscapes of Kirstine Stubbe Teglbjærg; the dark, urging and chanting flow of MC Jabber’s words and the both gloomy and playful electronic compositions of Dodebum will unite in a melting pot of noise, pop, sound art, indie and slam poetry” states Mute Comp’s website, and judging purely by whom they chose for the two previous productions, and how quickly the chemistry between the dancers and the musicians clicked, this will promises to be another resounding success.

Rosenzweig, a Danish choreographer and bicycle maker who lives in Israel, is known for his frenetic, intense dance performances while Swedish choreographer Olesen is one of the hottest things going in Sweden’s dance scene. Gone Home takes you into the heart of their two worlds. EB

A worthy stage-side manner The Good Doctor

If a toothache-ridden cleric suffering at the hands of an enthusiastic but incompetent medical student tickles your calluses, The Good Doctor is sure to stimulate your laughter reflex. Broadway’s master of comedy Neil Simon (The Odd Couple) has craftily woven together a collection of Russian playwright Anton Chekhov’s farcical short stories, slapstick and music to bring you The Good Doctor. Most people wouldn’t expect gags from 19th century Russia to be funny. To the contrary, Chekhov’s humour is as relevant today as it was when he wrote his way through med school. After all, watching a fawning employee spatter a vociferous sneeze all over his boss is as funny today as it has ever been.

14 - 19 April 2012 While not all the sketches are purely comedic, the show’s director, Frank Theakston, the chair of the Copenhagen Theatre Circle, emphasises that almost all contain humorous, bittersweet elements. Absurdity underlies much of the humour, making light of the world’s madness. The slapstick sketches focus on the hilarity of pain, while other scenes poke fun at the embarrassment suffered by people due to their position in society. These animated characters range from the desperate actress, to the Casanova preying on vulnerable wives, to the bank manager simultaneously ravaged by gout and the affections of an insane woman. Ouch. Despite Chekhov’s habitual reference to cultural context, Theakston says his writing has a Shakespeare-like quality that makes the sketches timeless. “Chekhov’s character observation and social commentary make it comparatively easy for any audience to identify with the situations, comic or otherwise,” he says. The Writer (played by Jens Blegaa) narrates the play, linking the various episodes as though they are products of his imagination. Floating in and out of the scenes and providing commentary, The Writer is of course Chekhov, but Simon never reveals him as such. Hints are

An exercise class, café life, and romantic encounters are all present in his paintings as well as Pippi Longstocking involved in various playful activities. BF

The pair created the name of their institution’s ‘founder’ from an anagram of the writer Georges Perec, whose texts inspired the exhibition’s concept. Kim and Møller have created ten collections from the fictional institution using literature, museum aesthetics and archival classification methods. BF

dropped along the way, with the character uttering his constant feeling of inferiority compared to literary greats Tolstoy and Turgenev. The Writer is a clever tool, according to Theakston, as he enables the drama to slalom between the most outlandish sketches and the more reflective, poignant episodes, leading the audience through a range of emotions: from chuckling knowingly at the rivalry between two war veter-

ans on a park bench, to being moved by the chance meeting of two lonely old people. The Copenhagen Theatre Circle’s production includes ten actors, double the size of the play’s original 1973 cast on Broadway. The CTC’s interpretation also focuses more on creating a sense of Chekhov’s era, with period settings and turn of the 20th century costumes, rather than drawing on Simon’s American-take on the short stories.

The CTC has been around for more than 42 years, but it is Theakston’s first time in the director’s chair, an experience he has found “surprisingly exhilarating”. “As an actor, I don’t particularly look forward to rehearsing, whereas as a director I found myself absorbed in the process of bringing out the characters, developing the stories and getting the best out of my fellow actors,” Theakston says.

If you want a generous dose of farcical comedy interspersed with thoughtful anecdotes and lively characters, The Good Doctor is a reliable choice. Whether you are already a Chekhov-convert or someone in need of a first consultation, this performance will show you an alternative side to the influential playwright, with some giggles along the way.

nce known primarily for their bizarre stage appearances, the three-man band WhoMadeWho now have a new and much more serious approach to their music, which is best described as a mix of ‘60 psychedelia, ‘70s stoner rock, ‘80s mutant disco and ‘90s electronica. Their interesting mix of genres has everything to do with their rather different musical background. The band formed in 2003, bringing together falsetto-voiced singer, songwriter and

bass player Tomas Høffding from the Scandinavian rock underground, singer-songwriter and guitarist Jelle Kjellberg from the avant-garde jazz scene, and drummer Tomas Bardgord – who also records as Tomboy – a rising star of electronic music. The band released their debut album back in 2005 and gained further popularity when they headlined the Spanish Benicàssim festival in 2007 after a delay caused former headliners, the Klaxons, to arrive too late to play their set. Nowadays, they regularly perform in countries like France, Italy, the Netherlands, Australia and even the US. Their new-found heavy concentration on their music has resulted in two albums within the last year, which

showed two different sides to the band. The first one, the digital mini album Knee Deep, which was released last year as an EP, shows a darker, melancholic and more experimental side of the band, whilst their latest album, Brighter, shows a much brighter – as you may have guessed from the title – and more accessible side. The band used to be known for the wacky costumes they wore during their shows: they have performed in skeleton costumes, eastern European sports outfits, latex, and animal suits. “The costumes came to us by chance and are leaving us by chance,” Barfoed told Danish music magazine Gaffa. “It was a good idea when we performed at local venues to 300 people, but now times have changed. But

who knows, the costumes might come back again one day.” Reviews in the national press have been very favourable. “The strength of Brighter, and in general of WhoMadeWho’s music, lies in the combination of an understanding of the electronic music instruments, combined with classic virtues like a sense of songwriting and structure, and fine musical craftsmanship,” Gaffa wrote. “And perhaps that is why they sound more interesting than many of the other bands who have taken a rock band approach to electronica for the last ten years.” Josh Homme, the frontman of Queen of the Stone Age, has been known to cover ‘Space for Rent’ from the band’s debut album during his shows.

The studio sound is important to WhoMadeWho, but according to the band, they don’t aim for perfection – nor do they try to imitate the sound of a live performance on their studio recordings. They think it’s two different things that shouldn’t be mixed. On stage the mood is different, and they are good at creating a party on stage. “You never really know what you get, but we always give the full 100 percent” Kjellberg told Gaffa. We can’t promise colourful costumes, but their concert at Vega is definitely one not to miss.

But the due release of CSS’s remix of their hit single, ‘Heart Attack’, and their second record, Out of Frequency (2012), has reignited the hysteria that led to the group’s rise to fame.

Amager Bio; 20:00; Sold Out The Welsh trio put Wales on the map with their cleverly strung together, often politically-driven lyrics and racey hooks just over 20 years ago. Adding to their expansive discography a tenth record with 2010’s Postcards from a Young Man, they once again rocked the pop world with a string of unconventional hits and reached the third spot in the British album charts. Undeniably one of the most influential groups in British rock history, it may not surprise you that tickets have already sold out. Still, it’s worth trying your luck through online ticket forums.

Blood Red Shoes

Lille Vega; 21:00; 125kr Hailing from the shores of Brighton, the male-female duo of vocalist Laura-Mary Carter and drummer Steven Ansel have channelled their punk urges into a glamorous sound, not too dissimilar to that of The Kills. Their third record, In Time to Voices (2012), is a further testament to the couple’s ability to tame the heavy punk inspiration that lurks beneath their refined tunes. Blood Red Shoes are now gearing up for the festival season and may grab themselves a few Danish fans on their way through Copenhagen.

Lille Vega; 21:00; 120kr Yes, we know we’ve included SPP for three weeks running, but we just won’t rest until you go out and see these bunny-masked up and comers. Fronted by Copenhagen-based artist Brian Batz, SPP are one of Denmark’s most exciting electro prospects. Their somewhat dark, melancholic and hypnotic slant on electro produces original results, often reminiscent of a subdued Animal Collective. Their debut album, Speed of Sound/Alarm Music, was given a five star rating by heavyweight music publication Soundvenue. Tonight sees the band move up in venue size for what must be one of their biggest shows to date.

rolled into town, they provided a memorable co-headlining show with Japanese rockers Boris. Now true headliners, Russian Circles are touring in support of 2011’s Empros, an album that took number three on my yearend list. Empros saw the instrumental post-metal band get a bit harsher with their sound while still maintaining a fair share of soft atmospheric moments. Listening to the band’s studio recordings, it can be hard to remember that just three people are behind all that lush sound.

Seeing them live is a tour de force not to be missed, as Russian Circles put on a straightforward, electrifying live show: no tricks, no gimmicks, just three guys rocking out on stage and building waves of sound through a variety of effects, loops, and good oldfashioned musicianship. With new tracks like ‘309’ and ‘Mlàdek’ added to an arsenal of hard-chargers like ‘Death Rides a Horse’ and ‘Harper Lewis’, tonight’s show should be varied enough from last July’s Lille Vega gig to keep fans happy. Supporting Russian Circles

will be the San Francisco-based Deafheaven, whose Roads to Judah was declared the best album of the year by former CPH Post contributor Matthew Anson. Granted, Matt is a full-blown metalhead with somewhat hardcore and obscure taste. Nevertheless, Deafheaven have made a name for themselves on the extreme metal scene for their unique blend of, as Matt put it, “despair via black metal [that] finds a perfect partner in the elongated soundscapes of shoegaze. Drone; Fri 22:00; Free Adm With his eclectic case of tunes in tow, AC’s taste in music has earned him a reputation in Copenhagen for playing hyped sets that include samples from New Order through to the Talking Heads. Recently referred to as Copenhagen’s Brixton by British newspaper The Guardian (which seems to praise our fair city every chance it gets – see page 7), Nørrebro continues to attract the young crowd, bursting with venues and new bars opening almost monthly. Drone is one of the staple bar-clubs along its main street Nørrebrogade and a mecca for the trendier sect of the city – almost 800 are signed up for tonight’s set via the Facebook page – and it’s worth checking out especially if you prefer things a little off the wall.

Outdoor Museums: Experiences out of the house and out of the ordinary THE TREES and flowers are blooming and the Marguerite routes in Denmark are quickly filling with bicyclists and hikers – it’s time to head outdoors. But if you think this means not going to the museum for another six months, you could not be more wrong. A farmer’s solitude in the metropolis A mere stone’s throw from Copenhagen you can happen upon a solitary farm, which seemingly has come to a standstill in both time and space. Frilandsmuseet (Kongevejen 11, 2800 Lyngby) is the largest open air museum in Denmark. It has more than 50 farmsteads, houses, mills and workshops open to guests. The houses include examples from all over Denmark and cover the period between 1650 and 1950, representing a time when being a farmer was a more natural course of life than being a urban dweller. The area also has historical gardens, woodlands, moorlands, ponds and fields where you can meet the farm animals. It is also perfect for romantic or poetic strolls, perhaps gaining an insight into the life, work and dreams of the farmer. A Poet’s Walk If you get on your bicycle and cycle north of Copenhagen along Strandvejen, you will pass Rungsted somewhere along the road. Stop and take in the atmosphere. It was in a house here that the Danish author, Karen Blixen, was born, grew up and spent the last years of her long and adventurous life. ‘DEN FRIE’ (The Free) was initially founded in 1891 by several artists as a reaction to the art establishment of the time. Charlottenborg was then the self-appointed censor of all Danish and international art popularised in the country and it fell to Den Frie to challenge that dominance. As is often the case, Den Frie, and the strange and wonderful building which is its home, has today become part of the establishment that it sought to challenge. It’s a testament to both the staying power of the enterprise and the irony of time ... This new exhibition RUNDTENOM (Roundabout and, as I understand, the name of a type of bread) represents an opportunity for Den Frie to redress the balance as it hosts a new exhibition by a group of exciting contemporary artists from the collective Skulpteriet (The Sculpture). For the last five years, the artists have been working separately and collaboratively under this banner while providing a stage for both domestic and international sculpture by way of their own independent artist-run exhibition space. Their aim has been to expand their network of sculptors and collectives. Each of the artists have an impressive list of solo and group credits, like Anders Bonnesen, 35, who is one of the most prolific young sculptors working in Denmark today. “Skulpturiet began as an off-space out here in Sydhavnen in 2008 and later moved to the present location on Store Kongensgade,” explains Bonnesen. “It is run by nine sculptors and two art histo-

I guess it just grew out of a frustration that contemporary sculpture is somewhat neglected by the commercial galleries.” A selective glance at the works on show suggest the exhibition promises to be, in the very least, unusual. One sculpture by Heine Kjærgaard Klausen will continue to transform over the duration of the exhibition, with Klausen himself to be seen interacting with his work at the opening event and at various intervals throughout; Jørgen Carlo Larsen’s contribution is a small home, complete with living space, kitchen and sleeping area; Karin Lorentzen’s performances will occur next to Jørgen’s house from a baroque garden maze - and combined, these two installations will form an aviary, filled with live birds. Those preferring a more sober form of expression will be catered to by Tina Maria Nielsen’s work, which looks to provide a more conceptual counter point. Given the history of Den Frie, one

might assume that the exhibition title ‘Roundabout’ alludes to the way in which the art establishment has a habit of assimilating its challengers, thereby creating new ones like Skulpteriet and thus contributing to a perpetual cycle of new and different art, with each successive movement replacing the last. Or it may have something to do with bread. “Yes, ‘Rundtenom’ – I guess the closest translation is ‘roundabout’, because ‘loaf’ doesn’t quite cover it,” continues Bonnesen, whose work can also currently be seen in a special interactive exhibition for children at K.Ø.S. in Køge and in a separate group exhibition also opening on April 21 at Møstings Hus in Frederiksberg. “It relates to the question of whether a sculpture is an autonomous object, something distant that you circle around but never touch, or something more related to us and the environment around us. At least, that’s our reasoning for all this madness.” MARK WALKER

COOKIES make the world go round. It might sound grand, but I wholeheartedly believe it. I have a new vegan cookie for you that I’m pretty sure you’re going to love. It’s a fun recipe to make with kids. They can help you throw in the ingredients, many of which are seeds. This recipe is also terrific because you can customise. Is there a person out there who doesn’t like to put their own personal spin on dessert? For the record, I am not a vegan but I do enjoy baked goods, vegan and otherwise. A personal life goal is to try every dessert on the planet before I die. Forget ‘100 places to see before you die’, for me it’s all about

sweets. But a girl can’t live on sugar alone. If I make cake or pie for dessert then I will almost certainly prepare dinner with lots of veg and healthy protein. This vegan cookie is terrific if you are looking for something sweet that still errs on the side of healthy. It’s chewy in the middle and crispy around the edges and contains tasty flecks of dark chocolate that complement the seeds and peanut flavours. Top tip: you might need extra water since you want a rather moist dough and the only moisture comes from the wet flax and peanut butter. Invite a neighbour, make tea, enjoy a cookie. The only thing better than dessert is sharing it.

If it’s company you want, you might try the main bar, or a private function, the second bar; seating-wise pull up a high chair, relax on cushioned benches or lord it as a bishop for the evening; or go genteel in the library - a great place to cheat in the fortnightly quiz, the longest running in the city. IT WAS A RAINY, dark day and not much would have enticed my partner and I away from our comfy sofa. But I’m glad we did go out, as Taco Al Paso sure knows how to brighten things up. As soon as we arrived at the cosy takeaway restaurant, we felt warm and cheerful and forgot all about the grim weather outside. Perhaps it was the lively decoration: sombreros hanging from the walls, colourful tapestries and a big wooden parrot, reminding us of sunnier, warmer places. The owner, Alex Ghazy, was a charming, sweet man, who welcomed us with open arms and delicious, spicy treats. He was no stranger to Denmark, he told us. In fact, he helped pioneer the Mexican cuisine experience in Denmark, as he worked for many years at the firstever Mexican restaurant in Copenhagen: Chico’s Cantina. Wanting a cantina of his own, he opened Taco Al Paso, to the delight of the residents of Hellerup. A gracious host, Alex showed up with a giant plate of nachos, accompanied by guacamole, salsa and crème fraiche. It was a beautiful sight. I had tried nachos before but never like these. The tortilla chips were crispy and the cheese had a lovely, creamy consistency that melted in your mouth and left you wanting more. And there were also jalapenos, not too strong but strong enough. Alex explained that there are three different spice levels, ranging from weak through to strong. Judging by the nachos we ate (weak spice level), the strong ones must have a really nice kick, if you like spicy things, that is. The guacamole was just right - not too garlicky nor too weak - and the salsa was off the charts, making it almost impossible not to double-dip. Alright, I confess that my last nacho was dipped in both guacamole and salsa, which I recommend to anyone who knows what’s good for them. In short, these nachos were the perfect entré, as they were filled with flavours that got our taste buds in the mood for what was to come next. For the main course, I had Quesadillas – warm, soft wheat tortillas – with veggies and yet another amazing portion of cheese. The menu offered quesadillas with chicken, beef, veggies, shrimp and cheese, but seeing as I don’t eat meat, I picked the veggies. The dish included two quesadillas, Mexican rice, a salad, shredded cheddar and guacamole. The entire meal was fantastic, each ingredient complimenting the other. The fresh

tomatoes from the salad tasted beautifully with the cheese, and the quesadilla bonded it all together. The rice was also very good and blended well with the rest of the food. The guacamole was, as expected, amazing. That alone is enough reason to go back. That and the nachos. My eating accomplice does eat meat, so he was quite excited about the offers on the menu: tacos, burritos and the tribute to all meat dishes, chilli con carne. Alex recommended the restaurant’s best dish, Fajitas (marinated slices of meat prepared on a lava grill), which come with either

chicken or beef. He explained that the meat at Taco Al Paso is very special, as it is prepared in a different way to that of other restaurants in Copenhagen. My partner chose the beef and it was served with four tortilla pancakes, Mexican rice and salad. According to him, the meat was not greasy – as it tends to be in a lot of takeaway restaurants – and there was a lovely, spicy pepper taste, reminisent of jalapenos. It was delicious. Taco Al Paso is a great restaurant to get a good meal, regardless of your age. During the time we spent there, we saw

lots of people come and go, all satisfied customers. There were even children, eating nachos like they were candy. The place is not too big, only three tables, enough to sit six people, and a bar with four chairs. We sat at the table by the window, which was decorated with a large, beautiful cactus, and found it very cosy. There was also a table outside, for when the weather is good, where we will hopefully sit next time we go there.

OU MAY be familiar with the naval combat game Battleship: a strategic game based on sinking your opponent’s differently sized ships on a grid. Knowing that the film is based on this tea-time board game may sink your expectations. Battleship is about an international fleet of ships in Hawaii that come across an alien reconnaissance team sent to Earth in response to a signal sent out by NASA a few years earlier. A fairly typical alien invasion movie ensues, along with a coming-of-age story for our hero, Alex (Taylor Kitsch). Alex is a total trouble-maker who doesn’t know when to back down and has terrible decision-making skills. His brother (Skarsgård) forces him to join the navy and suddenly we jump ahead to RIMPAC, a conference of naval ships and personnel from many countries. It’s clear that Alex is still too impulsive and destructive - to the point that he’s going to be kicked out of the navy. And yet somehow he manages to become second in command. How and why would that happen? The film presents a lot of information that we as the audience are just expected to accept. We are given just enough information for the film to make sense, but nothing beyond that. There is a man at the satellite station in Hawaii, who states multiple times that the aliens will be more advanced

“Who are you calling Bitch?” Rihanna’s looking for her on-off boyfriend Chris Brown than humans (using Columbus and the Indians as his metaphor). But this thought is never expanded upon. How did he come to that conclusion? It’s as if his character only says that so he can later say: “Told ya so!”. Alien invasion movies always feature the crazy guy who saw it coming (and wasn’t crazy after all!), as well as ridiculously advanced aliens as the enemy, which we somehow manage to defeat regardless. Unfortunately, the film is terribly clichéd. Of course humanity is the underdog, because we always root for

the underdog. The characters are generally underdeveloped, with the exception of the main character (and even his development is shallow). To that end, the acting was neither here nor there. It’s hard to pinpoint whether it was the acting, the writing or the direction that’s to blame for that. Maybe it’s just a combination of all three. In many ways though, this film is just disaster porn, which is not at all unusual for this genre. The action sequences are well made and the special effects impressive. The grand scale of

the destruction depicted is entertaining. The weapons the aliens used were somewhat clever. And surprisingly, the scene that emulates the game was well done and was as true to the game as possible in this context (although it was a relatively short scene, though that’s not entirely unexpected; the original game doesn’t really have a storyline). Ultimately, the film is a great example of blockbuster marketing. There are so many elements of this film that simply scream sell! It promotes a classic game, it features a fa-

mous musical artist (Rihanna, who is featured prominently on the advertisements, though her role could have been played by anyone), and it most definitely promotes the navy (as well as the military in general). And in turn, all of these things help promote the film. Not to mention all the possibilities for merchandising. It seems fairly obvious that these are the motivating factors for making the film. Although it provides an entertaining two hours, there is not a lot of substance to be taken away from it.

IDING ON the wave of the popularity of films showing kings and other royalty as human beings, that The King’s Speech fantastically rejuvenated, a film about Bertie’s brother, Edward VIII, was almost inevitable. Especially that his life, his sympathies (Adolf Hitler, anyone? Conveniently omitted and hushed up in this

sweet piece) and his choices were theoretically much more fascinating and film-worthy than a film about a speech impediment coming in the way of ruling a nation. Unfortunately and bizarrely, the first one to grasp this opportunity is Madonna. W.E. (standing for Wallis and Edward) is her second attempt at filmmaking and, even if it’s visually and technically better than the previous one (Filth and Wisdom), it’s still miles away from being a genuinely good piece of cinema. The very idea of the way the storytelling is presented is great, if not original; two entwining, seemingly completely different life stories are presented simulta-

neously. These are the stories of two women: Wallis Simpson and Wallie Winthrop, in the1930s and 1998 respectively, and the film is shown from their perspective. It’s a very feminine film with female aesthetics (if one can label it this way). It was a good move to present Wallis’s perspective - usually it’s the abdicated king’s view we see on screen - it presents a different viewpoint and provides a springboard for Wallie’s musings and ultimate decisions. And on paper it looks brilliant and engrossing. Sadly, the reality hits us hard in the face. The performances are incredibly uneven – Andrea Riseborough is fantastic and charismatic, and

Abbie Cornish anaemic at best. We can barely hear what she’s saying, and we can’t but wonder what Oscar Isaac’s character, Evgeni, sees in this bland woman. And as for Isaac himself, he does a good job portraying a Russian guard infatuated with Wallie, who conveniently has a multimillion dollar flat in New York. W.E. is worth watching if you are a period-piece fanatic. They’re gorgeous and incredibly accurate. Generally, the visuals (and music, you have to give it to her) in Madonna’s second cinematic venture are stunning, but ultimately fail to overshadow the weak story. DIANA CERENIEWICZ

It’s not an easy film to understand, but it’s remarkably hipnotising and rest in one’s visiual memory for a long time afterwards. MH

It will make any recent films seem trivial and tame, a strange and unique beast indeed. It’s mature drama, bravely tackling complicated subject matter for those looking to experience something different. It’s original, visceral and disquieting - in the way only cinema can be. MW

Wrath of the Titans (11) Dir: Jonathan Liebesman; US action, 2012, 126 mins; Sam Worthington, Liam Neeson, Rosamund Pike Wrath seems to have all the neccessary elements you would expect for a top-drawer: plenty of action and production design, just a hint of romance to round the characters without taking away from the action, good bits of humour spread throughout the, and just enough of an interesting story to help tie everything together. Unfortunately, instead of a mythological proportians, it is legandary only because it fizzles like an old soda. KE

The Iron Lady (3) Dir: Phyllida Lloyed; UK/ Fra drama, 2012, 105 mins; Meryl Streep, Jim Broadbent, Olivia Colman, Richard E Grant From the first frame there’s a growing awareness that our perceptions of this woman are being gently and skilfully manipulated by director Phyllida Lloyd and screenwriter Abi Morgan, so much so that regardless of your political persuasion you’d have to be resolutely stubborn or emotionally retarded in failing to be moved by this biopic. Nevertheless, Margaret Thatcher is full blooded; she lives and breathes before your eyes. MW

The Artist (3) Dir: Michel Hazanavicius; Fra/Bel dramedy, 2011, 100 mins; Jean Dujardin, Bernice Bejo, John Goodman, James Cromwell It’s difficult to see why this film is being championed so highly. Many will defend it by claiming that detractors are put off by a lack of colour, dialogue, explosions and other contemporary mainstays. But really their efforts would be better spent lauding Chaplin’s Modern Times or Murnau’s Sunrise. MW

IT MUST HAVE been tough knowing what to do with those last remaining hours on the Titanic, which sunk exactly 100 years ago this Sunday. One thing’s for sure though, they wouldn’t have watched Titanic, a new three-hour miniseries penned by Julian Fellowes (Downton Abbey, Gosford Park, anything with servants) unless they really were hell-bent on a fate worse than death. Each of the four episodes focuses on a different set of characters, climaxing with the sinking. British newspaper The Guardian felt the screenplay was “obsessed” with class to “the point that nothing else matters at all”, comparing it to being “bashed over the head again and again with a Debrett’s guide to etiquette. And then being thrown into the sea. Four times.”

Jack Davenport, the posh one in This Life, continues one of the slowest rises in the history of celluloid with the lead in Smash (TV3 Puls, Tue 22:00), an adult version of Glee that sees him directing a musical on Broadway. The critics concur it’s good. Likewise British scifi series Misfits has been praised for its adult take on X-Men. Its characters have the kinds of superpowers you would want: like turning any person who touches you into a sexual frenzy. And there are some good docs. The Oscar nominee If a Tree Falls: A Story of the Earth Liberation Front (SV1, Tue 22:30) reveals how tree-huggers are now on the FBI’s most wanted list, while Page One: A Year Inside the New York Times (DR2, Tue 21:00) looks at media’s move from print to the web.

Elsewhere, Spartacus: Vengeance (TV3+, Mon 22:00) is back for a third series with a new actor saying “I’m Spartacus” after the former lead sadly died of cancer; Inside Facebook (BBC World, Sat 22:10) promises much, but we suspect we’ll learn nothing new; The Great Indian Marriage Bazaar (BBC World, Sun 22:10) lifts the lid SV1, Sun 21:30 Titanic on the profitable world of arranged marriages; Wild Target (DRHD, Sat 20:45) is an absurd British crime caper that should never have been made - we suspect nepotism; Game of Thrones (TV3, Sat 21:00) makes its Danish TV premiere; and The Children who cheated the Nazis (DR2, Wed 17:55) sheds light on the pre-war Kindertransport of 10,000 Jewish children to Britain.
