BEN HAMILTON
I HANG MY HEAD in shame. And apologise to fellow Englishmen everywhere. Our food blogger, Simon Cooper – a patriot himself no least, whose surname reveals he is descended from the most important person in medieval society, the maker or repairer of casks and barrels – could have given us one of the all-time classics. Jam roly-poly, spotted dick, sticky toffee pudding, and that’s just for afters. Didn’t he check his diary? That’s right, it’s finally here, St George’s Day is next Monday (see G3 for details of everything going on), and what does Cooper instead give us the recipe for? Mackerel flaming pâté! I’m not even going to tell you what page it’s on. There are still vast areas of England where people don’t know what pâté means. “Ah, mackerel meat paste – you should have said.” Anyhow, listen here. Geordies, Scousers, Mancunians, Cockneys, Brummies, the county of Essex and even you Cornish – lend me your ears. It’s time to stand proud about
who you are and where you come from. I’ve had it on good authority that St George’s Day has made it on to the Copenhagen Police’s list of events for April 23 – let’s just say it’s a situation that they feel they need to be aware of. Well, let’s put this party on the map. To paraphrase the bard: “We few, we happy few, we band of brothers. For he today that drinks some beers with me shall be my brother. And gentlemen [who blame a bad day at the office, a manic Monday or their demanding Danish girlfriends] shall think themselves accurs’d they were not there, and hold their manhoods cheap while any speaks that drank with us upon Saint George’s Day.” Okay, here’s an idea (stolen from Brighton Rock). The first four readers to approach me next Monday inside Saint Nikolai with a copy of this week’s newspaper can have a free pint … on me. (A note to my actual brothers: I think it’s time you stopped calling me Ebenezer.) Elsewhere, Mozart gets the jukebox musical treatment (see G2) and Select Shopping (G8) goes vintage – a wonderful excuse to run a picture of that most English of actresses, Audrey Hepburn. What, she was half-Dutch, three eighths Austrian and only one eighth English! That’s almost as bad as a recipe for pâté.
Magic flutes and black harps, and performers dressed up as pelicans - it promises to be a crazy night at the Betty Nansen theatre
Mozart
Betty Nansen Teatret, Frederiksberg Alle 57, Frederiksberg; starts April 24, ends May 12, performances Mon-Fri at 20:00, Sat at 15:00; Tickets: 150-360kr; 120 minutes with intermission; www. bettynansen.dk THIS POP interpretation of Mozart is not for the purists, but rather a bold introduction to a new crowd of classical music groupies. Incorporating water cascading from out of nowhere, the cast of singers are literally gurgling their lyrics underwater. Imagine 22,000 people – the number of people who have already seen the show –crammed into your bathroom watching you sing along to Mozart renditions while splashing around in the tub. It’s a very public display of what would usually be a private moment, but audiences can’t get enough of it. The show has reopened since its success in January, with the original cast and musicians bringing you another 15 chances to experience a unique interpretation of some of the most masterful compositions of all time. The creative team who brought you Bob Dylan and Come Together have taken on a

Gamle Scene, Kongens Nytorv, 1055 Cph K; ends May 2; performances at 20:00 on Fri, Sat, May 2; tickets: 95– 695kr; introduction 45 min before every performance in the balcony foyer (in Danish); www.kglteater.dk This tear-jerking ballet about the impossible love between a courtesan and aristo is set in the demimonde of mid-19th century Paris. Inspired by Dumas the Younger’s novel from 1848, the same source for Verdi’s opera La Traviata are based on, the Royal Ballet’s artistic director Nikolaj Hübbe calls it “one of [John] Neumeier’s most beautiful ballets”. different challenge all together, to make a theatre show based on classical music enjoyable for a pop crowd. Nikolaj Cederholm and brothers Peter and Jens Hellemann transform 30 of Mozart’s compositions – from works including The Magic Flute, Don Giovanni and Eine kleine Nachtmusik and lesser known tunes – into grand theatrical numbers. The show is not about Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart the man, but rather a celebration of his works. We often hear Mozart’s music in our every day lives, whether it is on TV, in ads or in films without realising he is the man behind the tune. One of Cederholm and the Hellemann Brothers’ objectives was to bring more awareness of Mozart’s work to those who are not already interested in the classical genre. Betty Nansen Teatret’s Martin Biil says the show may create a divide between classical traditionalists who think the interpretation is “a bit too much” and more modern audiences who will enjoy the show despite all the classical music. “It’s presenting Mozart’s music in a way that makes it appealing to new audiences, including myself. I’m now a classical music convert,” Biil says.

The Good Doctor
The music is the hero of the performance, and songwriter Neill Furio has written English lyrics to bring a fresh perspective to compositions over 220 years old. The lyrics, which tie in modern themes, are sung in English, and free songbooks are distributed for each performance with both English and Danish translations. In a way the tunes have been recycled to make them more appealing to contemporary pop sensibilities. The outlandish and absurd accompanying visuals complement the power of Mozart’s music in a spectacular sensory explosion. Instead of powdered wigs, think of Ziggy Stardust kicking around puddles of water in waterproof period dress. Ropes are used in the choreography, and the enthralling masked actors sing and dance in or around bathtubs splashed around the stage. Playing in such an intimate venue, the intensity of the performance will wash you away. And at the end of the show, when you take your songbook away with you, you might be surprised to find yourself singing some renditions in your own bathtub at home.
Krudttønden, Serridslevvej 2, 2100 Cph Ø; ends April 28; performances at 20:00 (unless stated) until Sat, Sun (17:00), Tue-April 28; Tickets: 140kr, group discounts, tickets@ ctcircle.dk; www.ctcircle.dk Broadway’s master of comedy Neil Simon (The Odd Couple) has craftily woven together a collection of Russian playwright Anton Chekhov’s farcical short stories, slapstick and music to bring you The Good Doctor. While not all the sketches are purely comedic, the show’s director, Frank Theakston, the chair of the Copenhagen Theatre Circle, emphasises that almost all contain humorous, bittersweet elements. Absurdity underlies much of the humour, making light of the world’s madness. EB

Enter the Dragon St George’s Day Celebrations Various venues in Greater Cph; Monday April 23 SADDLE UP those horses and defeat that dragon, the damsel’s life depends on it! Yes, this Monday is St George’s Day – a feast day dedicated to England’s patron saint. St George was born to Christian parents in Cappadocia (now eastern Turkey) in 270 AD before moving to Palestine with his mother and becoming a high-ranking Roman soldier. After quitting his military post and protesting against his leader, Emperor Diocletian, St George suffered a torturous imprisonment yet refused to give up his Christian faith. The furious emperor then had St George dragged out onto the streets of Turkey and beheaded on 23 April, 303 AD. St George has been heralded for his bravery since that time, and in the 1400s, the holiday was even as important as Christmas. St George’s Day fell in popularity after England’s union with Scotland at the end of the 18th century, but has in recent years gained back some momentum. Traditional customs include wearing a rose in your lapel, flying the St George’s flag and singing the church hymn ‘Jerusalem’ on the Sunday falling nearest. These days, beer is a big focus, with a supplement of dancing, Punch and Judy shows and eating hearty English

To hell and back again Rufus Wainwright and Band Falconer Salen Monday 20:30; 450-550kr Rufuswainwright.com Livenation.dk

O-ONE would question Rufus Wainwright’s credentials. The son of prominent ‘60s musicians, a troubled sense of identity and a long standing battle with addiction – Wainwright’s bio ticks all the right rock boxes. His sense of self-torture and exorcism is evident in all of his songs, and he wears his heart on his sleeve as well as anyone. What separates Wainwright from the many folk-rock singers out there is the fact that he doesn’t seem to be getting any mellower. Despite enjoying a resurgence in his career, his music is becoming even more introspective, giving fans exactly what they want. Wainwright was born i n New York to Kate M c Garrigle and Loudon Wainwright III, both accomplished artists in their own right. After his parents divorced, he lived with his mother in Canada and spent the majority of his youth there. His own musical career began early, and by the time he was 14, he had an original song featured in a film. After touring with his sister, mother and aunt in a folk group, he began to branch out on his own, becoming a stalwart on the Montreal club circuit. In 1996, he moved back to New York, playing regularly at prominent clubs such as Club Fez. In 1997, Wainwright released his debut album. Despite being recognised by the mainstream press, including Rolling Stone who declared it “one of the best albums of the year”, the record failed to achieve commercial success, leaving a hefty recording bill and rest-
less studio executives to appease. Wainwright toured solidly throughout 1998 and 1999, supporting acts including Sean Lennon before moving onto to larger acts like Tori Amos, Sting and Ben Folds in 2000 and 2001. Wainwright began his well-documented descent into addiction in 2000, which reached its zenith in 2002 with the temporary loss of his vision. Although many have speculated on the cause, there’s little doubt that the pressures of near-constant performing and the lack of real commercial success took its toll. Although almost a cliché for performers of his ilk, Wainwright’s addiction, and subsequent reflection upon it, did provide some of his most pertinent inspiration – a host of self-reflective and meditative songs were written during this period. It’s this ability to reach into the darkness within himself that draws so many to Wainwright’s music. His voice is wistful and powerful at the same time, sung to an old school piano concert sound that is both haunting and beautiful. The array of instrumentation on his albums is both vast and unique and he harnesses his own playing ability well, switching between guitar and piano effortlessly. Although Wainwright’s earlier albums did not garner him the respect he deserved, it was his fifth studio album Release the Stars that catapulted him into the mainstream. The album reached number two on the UK charts and enjoyed strong success in both Europe and the US. Two years later in 2009, Wainwright released his sixth record, All Days Are Nights: Songs for Lulu, which enjoyed similar success. There’s no doubt that Wainwright’s performance is grabbing. Be prepared to be both uplifted and saddened, often within the same song. Whatever your preference, Wainwright is known as one of the most dynamic performers out there and he’s bound to put on a good show. ANDY RUGG

Lille Vega; 21:00; 110kr The London-based, Copenhagen-bred quintet offer a predictable brand of electro music carved out of the expected ingredients, with neither the group’s use of synthesisers, keyboards or samples making any real impact – only a chintzy, dated and drab string of mixes that are difficult to identify as being serious or ironic. If you’re on the prowl for electro, then it’s advised that you skip this and instead take a bike-ride just round the corner to Copenhagen’s alternative scene Kødbyen (in Vesterbro), which has stacks of electro DJs performing tonight at its respective clubs.
Review The Asteroids Galaxy Tour HHHHHH
April 13 Store Vega

efore I went to the gig, I was absolutely gutted. I’ve always considered The Asteroids Galaxy Tour’s lead singer, Mette Lindberg, as my dream future wife. I can’t even begin to describe the disappointment I felt after my colleague, who apparently grew up in the same neighbourhood as Lindberg, told me she’s a pure bitch. The Asteroids Galaxy Tour are a Danish duo, with four additional musicians for live gigs, whose music is best described as mid-60s soul, with melodies so infectious you’ll think you’ve heard them before. Horns – including a trumpet and saxophone – give their songs that special retro soul feel. They gained great popularity after their song ‘Around The Bend’ was used in an iPod commercial and more recently when they ap-

Soundvenue Session: Breton
Rust; 21:00; 80kr The brainchild of the Danish pianist Anna Broensted of the supergroup Efterklang, this distinctive brand of orchestrallytinged melancholic winter-rock suits the aesthetic of a dormant, dark and wintry Copenhagen, which is now, hopefully behind us for another few months and is nocturnal by definition. Expect snail-pace melodies, soundscapes as suggestive as those of Sigur Rós and depressive lyrics. Playing hot on the heels of the release of new single ‘Diamonds In Your Mouth’, this gig is something a little bit more low-key as opposed to an all-out party starter. peared in a Heineken campaign. On Friday, they returned to their hometown of Copenhagen. The setlist was a mixture of songs from TAGT’s two albums: 2009’s Fruit and this year’s Out of Frequency. The show opened the same way that Out of Frequency begins, with the interlude ‘Gold Rush, Part 1’, the single ‘Dollars in the Night’ and then ‘Gold Rush, Part 2’. It really is Lindberg’s voice that is TAGT’s not-so-secret weapon. High pitched and airy, it manages to be simultaneously soulful and squeaky. Her voice doesn’t leave much room for a middle ground, however - you’ll either be enchanted or aggravated by it. Of course, just one look at the woman and you’re likely to forgive her every highpitched yelp. However, the crowd didn’t really get into them at first. I have seen the group play in Amsterdam, and the crowd went immediately wild. At Vega, it took a few songs before the band fully captured the audience. Natural highlights were Fruit’s ‘Around the Bend’, ‘The Sun Ain’t Shining No More’, ‘Push the Envelope’, and ‘The
Rust; 21:00; 80kr The London four-piece are one of the most experimental urban groups to emerge in recent years. Appearing under black hoods on stage, their cool blends of heavy hip hop beats and delicate touches of orchestral instruments has led to a profound interest in the quartet’s new approach and the description of their music as being “schizophrenic”. Naturally, any Soundvenue Session – hosted by Denmark’s major music publication, Soundvenue – is a stamp of approval and a gig worth checking out, whatever your preference in music.
When Saints Go Machine
Forbrændingen; 21:00; 140kr A part of Copenhagen’s burgeoning electro-indie scene, the fresh-faced four-piece are the creators of some of Denmark’s most catchy underground electro-indie mixes. Sharply defined by their atmospheric blend of danceable rhythms, crisp keyboard sequences and pulsating electro-bleeps, their music is naturally made for the stage. With their new album, Konkylie (2011), proving even more popular than their debut, they’ve retained their markedly different and occasionally brave approach with their collage-like approach to song-making.

Lille Vega; 20:00; 130kr Hailing from North Carolina, the trio – led by the vocalists Philip Moore and Beth Tacular – belong to a generation of contemporary, so-called ‘sunshine folk’ artists. Rustic, jazzy, and layered with atmospheric instrumentation, it’s no surprise they’ve become favourites for listeners of the likes of Devendra Banhart. The single ‘In Our Talons’ initially captured listeners’ attention in the late ‘00s and the release of their second record The Clearing (2012) – still heavy with accordions and hearty lyrical sentiments – is a showing of their growing maturity as a group.

The lyrics aren’t exactly a masterpiece of English literature, but sometimes music can just be fun, and that’s what Asteroids Galaxy Tour succeed at doing. People’s hipster tendencies won’t always allow them to
admit it, but it’s hard not to fall for a tight pop band. TAGT fit a lot of the trappings of traditional pop, but subvert that pop sound into various genres in a way that sounds unique. It’s that mix of style that made The Asteroid Galaxy Tour so appealing to the crowd. Mike Hofman

What Happens: Mutiny, Steve Mac + Ash Huntington
Bakken; Sat 23:00; Free Adm Mutiny are one of the biggest partnerships in clubland, and since the mid-‘90s have been regarded as massively influential. One of the DJs in the beginning was Mac, who went on to become one of the UK’s most successful music producers, still working in collaboration with some of the biggest record labels on the continent. The equally influential Huntington has DJed at house music clubs from San Francisco to Brighton. Also chipping in with shorter sets to carry the night through to the early hours will be the resident DJ Tim Andersen, Steffen H and Carsten Feltman. This will be music to the ears of those who recall Mac’s role in the development of London’s house scene.

KIDS CORNER
LAST WEEK the weather forecast was predicting that for now we would have one more day of sunshine before the heavens would once again open and consign us to indoor activities for the time being. Well, we needed no more incentive than that in order to pack up a picnic and head out to enjoy the beautiful weather with a trip to our local park. Virum Bike Park has always been an all-weather destination for me: on days when it feels as though we are living not in Denmark, but inside a cloud, I have been found huddled under blankets sipping rain-diluted coffee from a thermos; on those glorious early days of spring, the blanket still wrapped around me as I soak up the heat from the gentle sun sipping from a cup of pure coffee, gratefully untainted this time by rain; and in the warm summer sun with lollies and the fragrant waft of suncream as the children shoot past every so often on the vehicles provided by the playground. When their short legs can peddle no more, there are other facilities to be used: a large wooden climbing frame for the bigger children and a smaller pirate ship for younger children. Again the park provides play equipment for the sand, which acts as a soft landing should it be needed, and there are plenty of spades to go around. Of course grown-ups do also like to sit down, and for that end there are benches throughout the area beckoning you to take a seat and watch safely from a distance.

The staff have a kitchen where I have always been able to boil a kettle if needed, and there are clean and wellkept toilets too. Staff are on hand throughout the opening hours and are always very friendly and happy to help. We also make great use of our local forests at this time of year. With arms full of dry wood, a box of matches and plenty of hot dogs for a midday snack, we will happily spend a few hours pottering amongst the trees. As long as we use one of the allocated fire stations, we are free to set up camp and make ourselves a little barbecue. The children love the challenge of finding the perfect stick for grilling their sausages and pretending to emulate all the survival heroes they admire. On the roaring fire, using freshly-found sticks that are now cooking implements, we grill hot dogs together, sitting on our logs in the middle of the forest, just 20 minutes outside the city centre. In the summer months, the forests teem with wild fruit: one walk that I know provides us with raspberries, cherries and tiny wild strawberries - a veritable smorgasbord. Make the most of the days when the sun gently warms your back and the children run off some of that surplus winter energy - there really are plenty of brilliant park areas to choose from. Just remember a blanket, a raincoat and a good book. Contact your local council for a list of all the parks in your area.

Human Centipede 2 Husets Bio; 19:30 The controversial gross-out cinema event of 2010 has apparently been followed by something twice as gross. Banned in several countries including the UK (temporarily - while 2 minutes and 37 seconds were excised) the sequel has garnered twice the notoriety of its predecessor. While the first was concerned with a mad surgeon fusing three teens to form the titular beast, this sequel breaks the fourth wall focussing on an individual obsessed with reenacting the original film. Nothing sells like censorship. You have been warned ... Messur Chups & Tremelo Beer Gut Loppen; 21:00 Why not finish your evening with some live music from Russian B-movie enthusiasts Messur Chups? Oozing a cinema savvy retro aesthetic, the band are joined by like-minded Danish rockabillies Tremelo Beer Gut. FRIDAY Martha Marcy May Marlene Grand Teatret; 21:30 The debut of writer/director Sean Durkin, this haunting drama has received universally rave reviews and looks set to continue collecting more of the same. The plot focuses on a young woman suffering from delusions and paranoia after returning to her family from an abusive cult in the Catskill Mountains.

SATURDAY Corman’s World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel Cinemateket; 14:00 A tribute to cinema’s original misfit, director/producer and studio outsider Roger Corman, who made a slew of horrors and beatnik classics while giving many nonunion opportunities to the talents we consider to be today’s industry greats (Martin Scorsese, Jack Nicholson etc). Night Of The Living Dead Catch the bus at DGI Byen at 20:00 or Vig Station at 21:30; 100kr Last year, the staging of Dawn Of The Dead at Fisketorvet shopping centre proved so popular that this time around they’re serving up Romero’s original zombie classic in a rural setting to mimic the film’s countryside locations. SUNDAY Diaz, Don’t Clean up this Blood Grand Teatret; 19:00 A hard hitting fiction film about real-life events taking place in 2001 during the Genoa G8 summit. A British journalist Mark Covell was beaten to a pulp and left comatose thanks to the brutality of Italian riot police. This reconstruction (with English subtitles) traces events based on the testimonies of Covell and others. Director Daniele Vicari, also known for documentary film work, is reported to have portrayed events with astonishing realism. MONDAY Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy 3D Imperial; 21:30 A softcore kung-fu film (with English subtitles)from China? In 3D? Got to be worth a sneaky peek, right?
Made up for the Human Centipede 2
TUESDAY I Wish Dagmar Teatret; 19:00 Set to be regarded a Japanese Ingmar Bergman, Hirokazu Koreeda has been quietly crafting some of the best and most inventive film dramas for over two decades (Afterlife, Still Walking). If you like the films of Yasujiro Ozu, you really should seek out Koreeda’s work too. WEDNESDAY Killer Joe Palads; 21:30 It appears that William Friedkin, the director of such ‘70s classics as The Exorcist and The French Connection, is at the age of 76 intent on making something of a comeback. Say hello to Killer Joe. 4:44 Last Day on Earth Gloria; 21:30 Willem Dafoe stars in this latest offering from Abel Ferrara (Bad Lieutenant). We are invited to witness the end of the world through the relationship between a young painter and a famous actor in this, a film described as an ‘apocalyptic valentine’... MARK WALKER

BY SIMON COOPER
MACKEREL has to be one of my favourite fishes. For such rich, complex and dark meat with a striking flavour, it is surprisingly versatile. It can be baked or roasted whole, or simply eaten on buttered toast straight from the can. One of the best uses for the striped sea creature though is in pâté. Of course for pâté, smoked mackerel is required and, should you not wish to rig up a cooking device and fume the daylight out of your kitchen, this is available readily from fishmongers. (There’s a relatively inexpensive one on the corner of Værnedamsvej and Frederiksberg Allé). Although, for pâté, fresh supermarket ones are also good. Generally mackerel and peppery extras like fresh horseradish or
cracked black pepper bed brilliantly together. Fruit with a bit of bite like small, sharp apples, lemons and limes, and gooseberries or cranberries also taste amazing. The process couldn’t be easier, although you need to decide on the best way to purée the fish. Some use a (presumably large) pestle and mortar, others a bowl, a fork and some egg-beating-like elbow grease; you could even use a blender, though that would be trickier and messier. Given that you wouldn’t want an oceanic stench left over, and that the pâté gets creamier and richer after anything from half a day to a few days (or as long as the mackerel’s death-span permits), it’s advisable to just use a mixing bowl and the backside of a fork to start with.

Restaurant Kiin Kiin Guldbergsgade 21, Cph N; 3535 7535; four-course menu 450kr, seven-course 775kr (with wine menu 1450kr); www.kiin.dk There are only two Thai restaurants in the whole world that have been awarded a Michelin star. One of them is in London, the other one is Kiin Kiin, which you’ll find in the heart of Nørrebro. And it’s well deserved. Kiin Kiin isn’t just a restaurant, it’s an experience, a place where every little detail is thought through. PDR Reinwald’s Farvergade 15, 1463 Cph K; open Mon-Sat 14:00-24:00 (kitchen closes at 22:00); 3391 8289; five-course menu with wine 850kr, other dishes 75215kr; www.reinwalds.dk Serving lunch and dinner, a director’s script-length of choices confronts you at Reinwald’s. It’s a who’s who of classic French and French-inspired Danish dishes as well as a monthly set menu. Any chef would be proud of this. SC 1. th. Herluf Gade 9, Cph K; 3393 5770, 1th@1th.dk; 1,250kr per person; www.1th.dk 1. th. is a gourmet restaurant with a twist. Tucked away behind a hard-to-find door on the first floor to the right of a typical Copenhagen apartment, the restaurant is based around the concept of the dinner party with guests stepping into what appears to be a private apartment and then being utterly spoilt by their hosts. The monthly set menu costs 1,250kr and has a whopping ten courses, and you can tell them in advance of any food quirks you might have and they will personalise the menu for you. Terrific food, friendly and attentive service and a unique setting. CS
Cap Horn Nyhavn 21, Cph K; open Mon-Fri 10:00-00:00, Sat-Sun 09:00-00:00; 3312 8504; starters from 99kr, main courses from 139kr, desserts from 39kr; see www.caphorn.dk for special events Nyhavn, the old harbour, is an idyllic area of magic and hygge what the Danes like to say when referring to anything that is cosy, charming, or delightful: all qualities Cap Horn has in abundance. Its simple menu boasts a fine selection of organic, homemade Danish fare, with a touch of seasonal influence. There were two highlights: the veal, pumpkin, mushrooms and potatoes with amazing truffle sauce (a “best ever veal experience”) and the chocolate cake (“Oh My God”), which was possibly the best chocolate cake ever! MM BioMio Halmtorvet 19, 1700 Cph V; open daily 12:00-24:00 (later Fri and Sat), kitchen open 12:00-22:00; 3331 2000; starters 75kr, mains 135kr; www. biomio.dk Located in an old warehouse next to trendy Kødbyen, Bio Mio is certainly unusual for conservative Copenhagen. It’s stylish without being pretentious, fast enough that you don’t go crazy waiting for food, and loud enough that you can make a racket without anyone raising an eyebrow. JH SushiTreat Fox Jarmers Plads 3, Cph V; open Mon-Thu 16:30-22:00, Fri-Sat 16:30-24:00 with Club Treat from 22:00-02:00; 3338 7030 The SushiTreat restaurant at the Hotel Fox serves the best California-style sushi in the city, offers an impressive drinks and wine card, and has a completely unique atmosphere on Friday and Saturday nights when you can order sushi until 2am while listening to some of the city’s best DJs . MOC
Mackerel pâté 1 whole smoked mackerel ½ tbsp crème fraîche Juice of half a lime (and a bit of zest) Capers 1 tomato ½ apple Spring onion 1 tsp grain mustard Curry powder IF YOU’VE acquired a whole readysmoked mackerel then you need to take off the head and tail and pull it apart at the split in its belly. Use a plate – don’t go polluting a chopping board. Carefully pull the bones from the flesh taking care to get all of them including the little awkward ones. Put the fish in your mixing bowl and mash well with the back of a fork. Consistency-wise it’s totally up to you. Proper pâté should be spread so should be pounded to a pulp. I prefer to keep it a bit rough and bitty.

The fun part then comes in adding extras. You don’t need to follow the above list entirely, but it’s a start. Whichever ingredients you use though always taste the mixture as you go. With the tomato and apple, chop them up as finely as possible – maybe even run them quickly through a blender. Add the crème fraîche. Be careful to not overpower the fish flavour. And do let it set. Cover it with foil or cling film and sit it in the fridge or, if you have a more ventilated room like a garage, stick it there. Not only does the mackerel mature but the sharp and pungent flavours start to swim through the pâté like its fish once did in the Atlantic or North Sea. When it comes to serving: as you will. Oven-baked tortillas smashed into pieces make the best dipping implements, though crackers and breadsticks are best for spreading and eating as a meal.

Saxo Cafe Colbjørnsensgade 11, 1652 Cph V; open 11:00-23:00; 3888 8288, www.saxocafe.dk; Chinese buffet 128kr pp, dim sum dishes from 35kr Saxo’s menu is an eclectic and comforting mix of cultures, incorporating Thai, Chinese and Vietnamese buffets, Dim Sum and Vietnamese menus, and traditional Danish fare. With such a wide choice, it’s a great place to go as a group who can’t agree on a choice of cuisine. On our visit our favourites were the Dim Sums - particularly the steamed pork dumplings that are perfectly fluffy. AK Gold Prag Gothersgade 39, 1123 Cph K; open Tue-Wed 17:00-23:30; Thu-Sat 17:00-24:00; SunMon closed; appetisers from 19Kr, mains from 89kr; 3391 4712, www.goldprag.dk Gold Prag has a distinct Austrian, Hungarian, Czech and Polish heritage and lives in a time of its own. The main courses are substantial, honestly cooked and rich in taste and include Vienna schnitzel with baked new potatoes and coleslaw and chicken breast topped with apricots and cheese. There are also dumplings cooked in the Austrian way and delicious goulash among the many different servings to be had. All in all it is a rough and tumble sort of place that is elegantly primitive with charisma, heartiness and austerely excellent food that perfectly accompanies classic beers and wine. There’s live music Thursday-Sunday (22:00-late), the kitchen is open from 10:00 until late every day - serving a burger meal with pint for just 120kr - the pub caters to all sports fans, there’s a pool table in their back room where you can smoke, and upstairs there’s a new lounge area, which is the perfect place to relax with a view over Strøget. AK Kennedy’s Irish Bar Gammel Kongevej 23, 1610 Cph V; Open Mon-Sun 12:0002:00 It’s not an Irish pub. Instead it’s a pub owned by Irishmen, and there’s a big difference. It’s an authentic taste of what the Emerald Isle was like in the 1980s in a pub totally devoid of concepts, themes, and DIY Irish pub kits. Drop by at 17:00 on Fridays for the traditional Irish music sessions which are rapidly gaining in popularity. BH
Southern Cross Løngangstræde 37, Cph K; open Sun-Thu 15:00-03:00, Sat-Sun 12:00-05:00; 3311 0939 This Aussie boozer is a mecca for expats and Danes, old and young, that has a lively darts board, a fortnightly quiz, a good sports-viewing atmosphere, and a happy hour that lasts to 8pm during which you can buy beers for just 30kr. JHW The Dubliner Amagertorv 5, Strøget, 1160 Cph K; Opening Hours: Mon-Sun 10:00-late This pub is never quiet. It’s the perfect place for sports fans to mingle, or for live music which it provides every day. It also serves food all day from 10am to 10pm, and diners can find peace from the music and sport on a table overlooking the walking street, or on the first floor balcony overlooking Amagertorv. BH The Globe Nørregade 43-45, 1165 Cph K; Opening hours vary, until 03:00 Fri-Sat Friendly service and good value food make this the perfect city pub, and it’s difficult to know where to enjoy your pint given the number of options. If it’s company you want, you might try the main bar, or a private function, the second bar; seating-wise pull up a high chair, relax on cushioned benches or lord it as a bishop for the evening; or go genteel in the library - a great place to cheat in the fortnightly quiz, the longest running in the city. BH The Old English Pub Vesterbrogade 2B, 1620 Cph V; Open Sun-Thu 11:30-02:30, Fri-Sat 11:30-04:30; 3332 1921; www.oldenglishpub.dk This Victorian style English pub has all the class and authenticity of a Cotswolds country pub not a Costa del Sol flea trap. Facing Tivoli’s arches and just a stone’s throw from Strøget, it’s the ideal pit-stop on a tour of the city centre. LB

IT HAS ALWAYS seemed like a crime that Marv og Ben had not received at least one star from the Michelin guide. The food is delicious, the value is incredible for the cost, and you always leave feeling satisfied. Last month, Marv og Ben received some recognition for their efforts. In late March, Michelin announced that the restaurant Marv og Ben had received a Bib Gourmand. For those who do not know, a Bib Gourmand is given to restaurants that offer “good food at moderate prices”. This is a title that Marv og Ben very much deserves. Upon entering the restaurant, one is given a view of the kitchen where the chefs are busy working away. The atmosphere is cosy and rustic: not a terribly unusual setting in Copenhagen. Nevertheless, it creates the right mood. And what truly makes Marv og Ben stand out is its wonderful food, which plays on the taste buds in the most unusual ways. We were seated quickly after entering. The waiting staff at Marv og Ben are welltrained and really know their stuff. They were also friendly, efficient and informative. Soon after seating, sparkling wine was served. As is the custom at many gourmet restaurants, Marv og Ben gives several amuse-bouches. They are served with little flourishes unique to Marv og Ben. We were given these to enjoy along with the sparkling wine. It’s important to mention that one of Marv og Ben’s major successes has to be the restaurant’s ability to pair wine. The wines paired so harmoniously with the food, it was as if the wines were made specifically for each dish. They have the best wine pairings, not to mention the best homemade bread out of any restaurant in Copenhagen. The first course was called ‘Spring announces’. It featured generous amounts of lumpfish roe, a red onion puree, and potato crisps. The potato crisps were an interesting choice and added crunchy texture to the dish. The first wine we were given was a German white wine. It was a light and elegant wine, so as not to overpower the roe. The following course was ‘From the garden corner’, a dish composed of veal tongue, beetroot, apples, and horseradish mayonnaise. Although it was a gorgeous plate of food, if you dislike horseradish, you may find that it can overpower the dish somewhat. That being said, it adds a fascinating contrast to the other flavours. It is still recommended to eat it with the other components, even if in smaller amounts. The wine that paired with this dish was a white wine by Valentin Zusslin. It
Join the party and watch St. George ride into battle against the dragon. Can he save the damsel in distress?
As refined as the fine dining gets, if a restaurant’s bread doesn’t pass the sight test, it ain’t worth a visit - Marv og Ben passed with flying, and autumnal, colours
was flowery and sweet, and complemented three components of the dish: the beetroot, apples and horseradish. For the third course, we were served ‘Visit the garden’, a lamb dish with savoy cabbage, red sorrel, garlic puree, and pickled elderberry seeds. The flavour of this dish was surprisingly and enticingly deep. Each flavour built upon the next like an orchestra building a crescendo. It is a wonderful example of how the sum can be greater than its individual parts. It was paired with an Italian red wine. It’s a strong wine with lots of tannins and lots of volume.
Last, and certainly not least, came dessert. The creamy and airy lemon mousse is served with white chocolate and crunchy little meringues. This is a traditional Danish dessert done in an unconventional way. Personally, I hate white chocolate, but this dessert converted me into a believer! It was paired with a French muscat dessert wine. The wine is quite fresh, although also sweet, with lemon notes to match the dessert. After dessert, it seemed a shame that the meal would end. Luckily we received plenty of coffee and tea. Served alongside the drinks were petitfours - in this case, de-
licious chocolates stuffed with salted caramels. Going to Marv og Ben is always a treat. For what it offers, it’s insanely affordable. The menu is concise enough that if you go as a party of two, you could basically try everything offered. The restaurant never fails to deliver a wonderful meal, taking seemingly traditional dishes and pulling complex flavours from the components. The chefs are maestros at creating masterpieces every time they enter the restaurant.

G18 Time for Soderbergh to hit the hay and refind his mojo FILM
InOut | THE CPH POST ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE
20 - 26 April 2012
BEN HAMILTON
Haywire (15)
Dir: Steven Soderbergh; US action, 2011, 93 mins; Gina Carano, Ewan McGregor, Michael Fassbender
Premiered March 29 Playing nationwide
S
TEVEN SODERBERGH doesn’t make bad films. Even when they’re hackneyed (Ocean’s 13 and 12, and Contagion), have flop written all of them (Che: Part One and Che: Part Two), and are ludicrous (The Good German), he somehow manages to produce something that’s better than most. And that’s just on his bad days. So, while another film about an invincible female protagonist – think Joe Wright’s Hanna and Phillip Noyce’s Salt – doesn’t exactly fill you with overflowing optimism, remember you’re in the safe hands of the same filmmaker who gave us Solaris, Traffic and Out of Sight. As unpromising as the ‘special ops agent (Gina Carano) gets betrayed and seeks revenge’ premise suggests – surely more Stephen Seagal territory than Steven Soderbergh – the director has polished stinkier turds than Haywire before. Personally billed by Soderbergh as “a Pam Grier movie made by Alfred Hitchcock”, we’re not sure what the British master would think of Carano, an actress who fans of American Gladiators know better as ‘Crush’. But unlike Grier, she’s a genuine badass, whose background in mixed martial arts (in 2007 she defeated an opponent courtesy of a “rear naked choke”) brings an authenticity to the action scenes that will have Sid the Sexist and his mates running for the covers.
It might not look like it, but she is aiming for the groin While it’s true her dialogue is a bit stilted (think Hercules in New York though) – and even apparently required some post-production tweaks – she still has enough presence to render a pretty powerful performance (maybe Hollywood’s finally found the female version of Arnie). Her action scenes are helped by Soderbergh’s steady hand (he was also the director of photography), for here’s a film in which you can actually see what’s happening – in most cases to the crotches of the men that Carano is punching, kicking, crushing and stamping on. The frank, inyour-face, no camera tricks violence dispels any illusions that this might
be another arthouse agent film of the same ilk as The American. But what the hell’s going on when she’s not fighting? Good question, and one that has left every other cinema-goer a little dumbfounded thus far – screenwriter Lem Dobbs (The Limey and Kafka) has a proven track record in confusing audiences. While it’s a predictable tale, the plot gets unnecessarily complicated – not least to service Soderbergh’s perpetual need to find parts for all his actor buddies. “A vigorous spy thriller that consistently beckons the viewer to catch up with its narrative twists and turns,” noted USA Today. “Bordering on convoluted, it works best when in
combat mode.” Michael Douglas, Antonio Banderas, Michael Fassbender and Ewan McGregor are among the distracting big name cameos, and only McGregor has anything approaching an important role. Ultimately, it’s unclear who will want to watch this. Carano is as attractive as she is athletic, but to suggest this will be popular with teenage boys is a great disservice to their ingenuity levels in the area of downloading porn. That leaves teenage girls, and it’s true they could learn a thing or two watching this film – even if it is different ways of hitting men in the groin. Sadly, this film has come along too soon for Carano, who undoubtedly has
promise. She needs to fine-tune her delivery, learn her craft in a few supporting parts, and her big break will come in a superhero flick. She just isn’t ready for star billing, but in the words of the man whose career she might end up emulating: she’ll be back. And as for Soderbergh, this film has come along too late. Five years ago, it would have been slick and cool and we would all been praising a work of ‘minimalista azione’. He’s been telling interviewers for a while that he badly needs a sabbatical to refind his inspiration. So what’s stopping him? Someone give him Terrence Malick’s address and they can sit out the next decade together.
Moon Nazis: sounds funny, it ain’t Iron Sky (11) Dir: Timo Vuorensolas; Fin/Aus/ Ger action/com; 2012, 93 mins; Julia Dietze, Götz Otto, Christopher Kirby, Peta Sergeant
Premiered April 19 Playing Palads, CinemaxX, Empire Bio
F
EW FILMS arrive with as much internet fanfare as this one – and less still that are made for so few pennies. Director Timo Vuorensolas and his merry band of cinerebels have set out to make a
studio-quality picture outside the studios (although Disney have picked up distribution). So did they succeed? If by studio picture, you mean big, loud and stupid – then well yes, but they can’t be penalised for that because big, loud and stupid was clearly their intention. If you make a film about Nazis who at the close of the Second World War sought refuge on the dark side of the moon in order to eventually return in 2018 and occupy the entire planet, well – if you’re not playing that for laughs, you’re misguided. To that end, where many films lose their way, Iron Sky knows what it is: a goofball farce that remains so throughout. During the opening reel,
the sheer audacity and absurdity of the concept had me giggling heartily. I grew hopeful, not only for my continued enjoyment, but for this little film lovingly crafted over SIX years by genuine Finnish fanboys rather than cynical studio execs. Udo Kier, moon Nazis, space battles and Sarah Palin? What could possibly go wrong? To be perfectly honest, the cracks didn’t appear in the form of a limited budget: more a limit of wit. Some sly observations about geopolitics and playful ribbing of the USA’s foreign policy aside, the humour is derivative and classroom crappy. Some jokes, many of which are centred around the ethnicity of an African-American astronaut (Kirby)
are outdated and toe-curlingly cringe-worthy. The space battles are truly impressive, but outstanding homemade CGI does not a great film make. Thus, Iron Sky has proved that the studio system has its uses; this script would likely have seen a few more drafts before getting greenlit. As it is, Vuorensolas goose-stepped out of obscurity and right into the cine-scheisse. Not to knock the monumental achievement of assembling this huge production, but just because you can, doesn’t necessarily mean you should.

20 - 26 April 2012
New this Week Chronicle (15) Dir: Josh Trank; US sci-fi action, 2012, 83 mins; Dane DeHaan, Michael B Jordan, Michael Kelly, Alex Russell Three high school students make an incredible discovery, giving them superpowers. As they learn to control their abilities and use them to their advantage, their lives start to spin out of control, and their darker sides begin to take over. This film puts a fresh spin on the superhero origin story, a tale Hollywood spins again and again. MH
Book Your Tickets Into the Abyss (15) Dir: Werner Herzog; US director, 2011, 107 mins; Werner Herzog, Jason Burkett, Michael Perry Conversations with death row inmate Michael Perry and those affacted by his crime serve as an examination of why people - and the state - kill. MH
The Ides of March (3) Dir: George Clooney; US drama, 2011, 101 mins; Geore Clooney, Ryan Gosling, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Paul Giamatti Initially, the film seems too sleek. But then the film takes a few unexpected turns, which creates intriguing conflicts. LD
Shame (15)
Battleship (15)
John Carter (11)
Dir: Steve McQueen; UK drama, 2011, 101 mins; Michael, Carey Mulligan, Nicole Beharie Shame is a claustrophobic drama of intensity and urgency. It will make any recent films seem trivial and tame, a strange and unique beast indeed. It’s mature drama, bravely tackling complicated subject matter for those looking to experience something different. It’s original, visceral and disquieting - in the way only cinema can be. MW
Dir: Peter Berg; US sci-fi action, 2012, 130 mins; Alexander Skarsgård, Brooklyn Decker, Liam Neeson This film is terribly clichéd, the characters are generally underdeveloped, the acting was bad, and there basically is no storyline. LD
Dir: Andrew Stanton; US sci-fi, 2012, 132 mins; Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins, Samantha Morton, Mark Strong John Carter is enjoyable, but not memorable. Somehow it feels that Disney should stick to what Disney does best - animations - and leave live-action films to others. But if you don’t mind formulaic plot devices and only crave a bit of light-hearted entertainment, it’s a pleasant enough way to spend two hours. DC
Hugo (15) Dir: Martin Scorsese; US drama, 2011, 128 mins; Asa Butterfield, Chloë Moretz, Ben Kingsley, Jude Law A wondrous blend of fantasy and mystery that will appeal to adults as well as children. MH
This Means War (11) Dir: McG; US com, 2012, 98 mins; Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine, Tom Hardy, Til Schweiger The script is mediocre, and the settings are off. The only pleasure comes from watching Bronson and Captain Kirk fighting over Legally Blonde. MH
Also Playing Wrath of the Titans (11)
Avoid like the Plague W.E. (7) Dir: Madonna; US drama, 2012, 120 mins; Abbie Cornish, Andrea Riseborough, James D’Arcy W.E.is Madonna’s second attampt at filmmaking and, even if it’s visually and technically better than the previous one, it’s still miles away from being a genuinely good piece of cinema. DC
Dir: Jonathan Liebesman; US action, 2012, 126 mins; Sam Worthington, Liam Neeson, Rosamund Pike Wrath seems to have all the neccessary elements you would expect for a top-drawer: plenty of action and production design, just a hint of romance to round the characters without taking away from the action, good bits of humour spread throughout the, and just enough of an interesting story to help tie everything together. Unfortunately, instead of a mythological proportians, it is legandary only because it fizzles like an old soda. KE
The Iron Lady (3) Dir: Phyllida Lloyed; UK/ Fra drama, 2012, 105 mins; Meryl Streep, Jim Broadbent, Olivia Colman, Richard E Grant From the first frame there’s a growing awareness that our perceptions of this woman are being gently and skilfully manipulated by director Phyllida Lloyd and screenwriter Abi Morgan, so much so that regardless of your political persuasion you’d have to be resolutely stubborn or emotionally retarded in failing to be moved by this biopic. Nevertheless, Margaret Thatcher is full blooded; she lives and breathes before your eyes. MW
The Descendants (7) Dir: Alexander Payne; US dramedy, 2011, 115 mins; Geore Clooney, Shailene Woodley, Amara Miller Despite the nominations, Clooney delivers a performance we’ve seen many times before. LD
We Need to Talk About Kevin (7) Dir: Lynne Ramsay; UK, US drama, 2011, 112 mins; Tilda Swinton, John C Reilly, Ezra Miller Kevin’s mother struggles to love her strange child, despite the increasingly vicious things he says and does as he grows up. But Kevin is just getting started, and his final act will be beyond anything anyone imagined. It’s not an easy story to tell, but the filmmakers do it well. MH
Contraband (15) Dir: John Madden; UK dramady, 2012, 124 mins; Judy Dench, Bill Nighy, Maggie Smith, Tom Wilkinson We are supossed to be dazzled by the cleverness of the idea, as each accomplishment is revealed along with the realisation of what must have taken place. Still, overal it’s an entertaining experience. LD
The Artist (3) Dir: Michel Hazanavicius; Fra/Bel dramedy, 2011, 100 mins; Jean Dujardin, Bernice Bejo, John Goodman, James Cromwell It’s difficult to see why this film is being championed so highly. Many will defend it by claiming that detractors are put off by a lack of colour, dialogue, explosions and other contemporary mainstays. But really their efforts would be better spent lauding Chaplin’s Modern Times or Murnau’s Sunrise. MW
G19
The Hunger Games (11) Dir: Gary Ross; US sci-fi, 2012, 142 mins; Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson Ross has successfully dissected and expanded the book and produced something that works as a film - so long as you’re not too precious about its origins. MH
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (3) Dir: John Madden; UK dramady, 2012, 124 mins; Judy Dench, Bill Nighy, Maggie Smith, Tom Wilkinson A dissapointingly familiar form with surprisingly charming content. Take your mum. MW
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (11) Dir: Stephen Daldry; US drama, 2011, 129 mins; Tom Hanks, Sandra Bullock, Thomas Horn If you’re a moviegoer who enjoys having your heartstring plucked like a bluegrass banjo, this is the king of movie you will be gushing over this while drinking double mocha non-fat cappuccinos with your friends. KE
American Pie (7) Dir: Jon Hurwitz; US comedy, 2012, 110 mins; Jason Biggs, Alyson Hannigan, Seann William Scott The last serving of pie may not be the best, but it certainly is tasty in its own right and a worthy clinger to a fantastic (in a manner of speaking) series of films. KE

A PRIME MINISTER will save the life of his country’s favourite princess by having sex with a pig. But no, this isn’t Game of Thrones, as he will have to do it on live TV. “Don’t get it over too quickly, sir,” his secretary advises. “Otherwise, the public will think you are enjoying it rather too much.” Black Mirror, from the satirically-brilliant Guardian journalist Charlie Brooker, is billed as The Twilight Zone directed by Brass Eye’s Chris Morris. It’s a series but only thematically: all the episodes are standalone. Brooker explores how new media is distorting the world, and the episodes respectively satirise social networking, reality TV and our desire to record everything. It’s “the way we might be living in 10 minutes’ time if we’re
clumsy,” warns Brooker. The Daily Telegraph called it a “ballsy, blackly comic study”, “a dementedly brilliant idea” and satire “so audacious, it left [them] open-mouthed and squealing - rather like that poor pig”. Brooker won’t be tuning in for Dirty Sexy Things, another reality TV show set in the fashion world. British newspaper Metro found it “neither dirty nor sexy but really rather boring”, but other media were more positive, probably because they’ve got something to sell. Funny to see that Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer have returned to the series that sold their careers down the river. Shooting Stars (BBC Ent, Wed 22:30), a massive hit franchise-wise, returned after a seven-year hiatus in 2009, and here is the first of those episodes, with
Jack Dee joining the team. Elsewhere, nobody’s seen new drama series Titanic: Blood and Steel (DR2, Sun 21:00), but the omens look good; Rockstar Hamlet (BBC World, Sat 16:10 & 21:10) offers some interesting insights on Lithuania’s Singing Revolution as does the acclaimed (100 percent on RT) The Boy Mir - ten years in SV1, Sun 22:50 Black Mirror Afghanistan on over there; there’s a whole week of net-themed docs on SV2 (Mon-Fri 18:00); British crime drama Luther (SV4, Thu 23:55) is back for a second series that critics found vastly superior to the first; watch the 2006 Salzburg Festival’s rendition of The Marriage of Figaro (DRK, Sat 20:00); and there’s a more agreeable time to see sci-fi series Misfits (DR HD, Sun 13:40).
