I’M ABSOLUTELY flabbergasted, and no, I’m not talking about the decisions to cut two of our national holidays or charge online users for reading Danish newspapers – although the reason is linked to the latter. Apparently, a survey reveals that since the launch of our new website last year, our users have not ordered a single Russian mail order bride. Not one! Now, we understand. You’re concerned the said order will show up when you post a message: “Blah, blah, welfare state blah, tell Anastasiya I will be at the harbour on Tuesday wearing a Where’s Wally t-shirt, blah, blah, the Danes are cold, blah.” Please be assured, this isn’t possible – our website is a secure zone. The same is also true of listings and adverts in InOut and on the website, but while our discretion is assured, don’t feel you have to reciprocally consume in silence. our cause - you’ll be doing us a favour. Headlining this week are two performance pieces: the Englishlanguage opera Albert Herring (see G2) and Mellemrum 2012 (see G3), an English-language guided tour around the backstreets of Vesterbro. Both are quirky and intriguing … so much so that reading the plot of the opera was a little trippy, and to think it was written in 1947. And Mellemrum is nothing short of a magical mystery tour. If uneasiness bordering on queasiness is your thing, then don’t miss the final part of acclaimed documentary Kumare (see G20), the kind of film The Dictator (see G18) could have been if only Sacha Baron Cohen had stuck to the spoof documentary format that served him so well in The Ali G Show and Borat, and to a lesser extent in Bruno. Our review observes that Cohen is critical of pretty much everything except Israel so maybe he’ll be interested to know that the Jewish Film Festival (see G8) starts this week. Anyhow, we’ll stop short of asking you to tell the cinema where you got the recommendation or, in the case of The Dictator, the warning. With or without him on your t-shirt, you’re only going to look like a wally.

Albert Herring

The conductor and pianist is arguably one of the most influential composers in Britain, and according to the Operabase website, he has more operas played worldwide over any other composer born in the 20th century. Born in an era when English opera was growing in independence and forging its identity, Britten impressed even his harshest critics with his flair and dramatic musicality. But Britten himself considered the scene to be amateurish and distanced himself from it – such snobbery is perhaps the secret to his far-reaching success. Britten liked to write about snobs too, and Albert Herring is one example of this penchant. Britten’s characters are often outsiders and it is quite probable

Incorporating stand-up comedy, magic, drag queens, sketches, opera and music medleys, this will be a fun variety show, whether you take advantage of the free bar or not. Most of the acts are in Danish, but the cheesy pop hits are in a language everyone can understand. EB

that their creator, a conscientious objector during the Second World War, identified with such figures. He was heavily criticised over his personality, sexuality and political point of view during his career and treated with suspicion over his admiration of composers Gustav Mahler, Alban Berg and Igor Stravinsky – none of whom were then deemed appropriate role models for a young musician of that time. Composed in 1946-47, Albert Herring is a chamber opera in three acts exploring society’s reaction to a strange individual. Set in 1900 in Loxford, a small Suffolk market town filled with sanctimonious snobs, the play begins as the village committee is discussing its search for a May Queen. The head of the committee, the self-righteous Lady Billows, is so disenchanted by the poor standard among the aspiring queens that she refuses to crown one. But the police superintendent comes to the rescue, suggesting the shy bachelor, Albert Herring, be crowned the King of May instead. Lady Billows agrees it’s a good idea, if only to teach the disgraceful Loxford girls a lesson. Before his coronation, the mischievous Sid spikes Albert’s lemonade at high tea, leading to drunken misadventures. Though Albert’s transfor-

Te a t e r H U S E T; Rådhusstræde 13 (entrance through Magstræde), Cph K; starts Thu, ends 2 June; daily performances at 19:00 (not May 26 and May 27); Tickets: 60kr, www.billetto.dk As its title suggests, this performance explores human beings at their darkest moments, from those who have lost a loved one, to those living in fearing of each other or the final inevitable moment of death. But it’s not all doom and gloom. The production also reveals humans’ acceptance of the absurdity of life. The themes are presented through an interesting collage of texts, incorporating theatre, physical performance, video projections, music and song. The performance is entirely in English. EB

mation is described by those present as “a nightmare example of drunkenness, dirt and worse”, his outburst, in reality, empowers him to escape the oppression of his dominant mother and the hypocrisy of the town in which he lives. As it is remarked: “Every good boy deserves favour.” The plot is light-hearted – in fact, Britten wrote this opera as a way to cheer himself up after his confrontational The Rape of Lucretia, which ends with Lucretia fatally stabbing herself. Incidentally, this opera also played in Copenhagen in 2010 – there must be someone at the Opera House with an appreciation for Britten’s work. Playing at Det Kongelige Teater’s Gamle Scene, Albert Herring is a co-production with Cantiere Internazionale d’Arte di Montepulciano and is performed in English with Danish subtitles. Though the opera’s subject matter is comic, the musical composition is complex, bringing with it a delightful contrast. The writing is hilarious and perhaps even reminiscent of English opera’s origins as jigs performed at the end of plays at court. And who doesn’t like a good ol’ jig?

Performance Festival ‘Mellemrum 2012’

Walking out of the back entrance, through the overwhelming classical music dominating the hall, there’s usually a crowd of people hanging around, smoking, drinking, talking and getting in your way. The western part of the district is packed with Asian grocers and porn shops, offering a variety of purchases from noodles to vibrators. Further away you’ll find Kødbyen, the infamous meatpacking district, on one side and both vintage and high fash’ shopping on the other. Safe to say you have now entered hipster central. Though the clichés are easy to spot, there’s more to Vesterbro than what first meets the eye, which the Mellemrum festival is now trying to show in its “performative interpretation”. It’s a chance to look at the Vest-

erbro streets, places and corners from a different perspective – as the festival puts it, the “lonely wolves, free birds and the café latte segment syringes, condoms and class diversity”. With that in mind, it was intriguing to take Mellemrum’s journey, or more correctly ‘guided tour’, around the area. On the greyish Friday morning I attended, the guide is a tall, dark-haired man dressed in leather from top to toe. “Hi, I’m Sylvester,” he says to all the participants present. He seems kind, and you trust him to get you safely through the two hour and 15 minute tour on which the only two stops you know of are the beginning and the end. But that’s all part of the fun. Nevertheless, beyond the fear of more rain and the thrill of the unexpected, there’s nothing scary about this walk. People are chatting to each other, while some just walk silently to get a feel of the surroundings. Sylvester lifts his golden stick and starts walking a slow but steady pace through the streets like a general leading his soldiers to war. We stop at an open square with a few barrels. Following Sylvester’s lead we surround one

This original and experimental dance piece explores the contrasts of good and evil and the shades of grey in between. When he turns on his television, he sees the war, and he has no idea what to do about it. Until he meets Fernando, a Mexican desperado who shoots before he asks – but actually, Fernando is just a puppet. MH

As a leading museum of contemporary art, Louisiana looks to develop and grow its collections with significant artworks. This presentation brings together works by Asger Jorn, Poul Gernes, Roni Horn, and Erwin Wurm, among others. It includes all media: from video and photography to sculpture and painting. The museum describes the exhibition as displaying the “classics of tomorrow”. BF

of them, on which he puts a pomegranate that he first divides into pieces and hands to us to eat. Some of the participants are more sceptical than others. Then the walk continues. The first performance on the tour is inside a café. Here a woman is waiting for us or rather for her customer, who we all represent in turns. Her story is captivating, and so is her dance performance that ends with her running off to another gig – a bachelor party apparently. We follow Sylvester through streets, narrow pathways, parks, yards, buildings, and basements over boarding, always keeping an eye on the yellow stick. Most of the walk is accompanied by two men in work overalls, who spend most of their time pushing either each other or a closet around in an, at times, aggressive manner. Each time they appear, they flee the scene to show up somewhere else on the walk. The first time we meet them is in a back yard. Later we see them in front of a supermarket, then in the park, and in the end in a yard in front of the house where Lenin used to live back in 1910. Finally they leave us with sweets, and we follow Syl-

vester to Toves Gallery, which is a shopping centre named after the Danish writer Tove Ditlevsen. We’re greeted by a group of people who seem to know us. They smile, introduce themselves, and take some of the walkers by the hand and lead them into the centre. Here their performance includes whispering,

singing, yelling and other thought-provoking activities before they leave us alone, and Sylvester takes us to the final stop. The festival is currently taking place in Vesterbro over three weekends with nine different performances on three different tours: a morning tour (last week), an afternoon

tour (this week) and finally an evening tour (next week) to show the city in three different lights. This year is the third time it’s taken place, after earlier versions around the city centre in 2008, and then in Nørrebro in 2010.

Christiansen chose to focus on the middle section of the novel for his paintings. In this section, the summerhouse, frequented by the novel’s main characters, is the centre of the narrative. Christiansen’s paintings show an empty house, interiors, and gardens without people. As is present in Woolf’s novel, there is an element of darkness and brooding in all of the paintings. BF

He twists traditional sculptural forms with contemporary references. His artwork explores themes of identity, death and the violence of contemporary life. A former biology student, Johnson’s work is now part of the permanent collection at the New York Museum of Modern Art. BF

HE “HYPED” American indie/rock band Milagres – according to Vega, anyway – will hit the venue Tuesday as part of their European tour. I know, I know, I can hear you asking: “Who!?” This five-piece Brooklyn band might not be particularly well known – at least not in Denmark – but hey, everyone has to start somewhere. Firstly, this band doesn’t sound American at all, or Brook-

lyn-ish for that matter. When you think of Brooklyn acts, you think of bands like TV On The Radio, Animal Collective, Yeasayer, Vampire Weekend or LCD Soundsystem – who have, all in their own way, set the standard. Milagres, on the other hand, sound about as British as it can get. In 2010, Milagres’ lead singer, Kyle Wison, broke his back while rock climbing, prompting him to write a fresh batch of songs while recovering from his injury. The result is the band’s first album, Glowing Mouth. And let’s just be frank here: the songs sound like Coldplay. Miraculously (Milagres is Portuguese for miracle – see what I did there?), it doesn’t sound bad

Obviously influenced by the hip-hop scene on the other side of the pond, they started out at the beginning of the ‘90s. Their open-mindedness to an eclectic range of loops, rhythmic lyrics and stage harmony quickly led to their recognition as the genuine article. With a batch of uplifiting singles to their name – ‘The Building’ from their latest record Professional Dreamers (2011) is one that will get you out of bed in the morning. All hip-hop fans in town should see this gig.

esterbro: home of Tivoli, Istedgade, the worldfamous meatpacking district and, of course, the Vesterbro Festival, the borough’s very own annual musical extravaganza. Vesterbro Festival, which this year will hold its tenth anniversary, is a festival dedicated specifically to up-and-coming acts on the local scene. The idea behind the two-day event, which showcases the talents of around 80 newcomers on Denmark’s music scene, is to introduce relatively unknown bands to the public. For the performing acts, the event is something of a springboard towards bigger and better things, so expect many passionate, well-rehearsed performances. We’ve taken the liberty of hand-picking several cutting-edge names for you to look out for.

LSD on CIA Øks 1 Scenen; Fri 22:00 Vesterbro thrash rock enthusiasts LSD on CIA are an intense, pulsating mix between The Clash and local progressive rock lads Veto. Their live shows are an aggressive, high-octane blend of intense instrumentation and punk-influenced antics, so don your dancing shoes and prepare to groove. With three years of experience under their belt that’s seen the trio perform as far out as Sziget Festival in Hungary, expect a quality, adrenaline-charged performance on their home turf.

For those up for less headbanging, singer-songwriter Indiana Dawn features a rhythmic country-orientated music that’s guaranteed to sooth the soul. Backed by witty, powerful lyricism and sentimental guitar sequences, Indianna Dawn offers a more subtle approach to this year’s festival.

Tonight is the decider for Eastern Denmark’s most exciting prospects for the final. Following the outcome of tonight’s showdown, the winners will advance to the Nordic finals in Stockholm, and potentially the international final in Germany later this year – with the ultimate prize being a funded tour of the US and Europe. The Unusual History of Ether PH Scenen; Fri 18:30 The Unusual History of Ether features the haunting lyrics of Irish singer-songwriter Rebecca Collins and Danish guitarist Mikkel Plough, with Jeppe Skovbakke of I Got You on Tape on bass duties. Their sound is deep, dreamy and piercing: a refreshingly different approach that’s sure to win over a few hearts. Indianna Dawn PH Scenen; Sat 15:30

Loppen; 21:00; 100kr Hailing from Baltimore, the allAmerican quartet, described as a ‘freak folk’ band, are led by the diva of folk, Jana Hunter – the eccentric Texan singer-songwriter who has worked closely with the likes of Devendrea Banhart. The band’s muddied, reverbheavy, psychedelic-rock has amassed attention from listeners less afraid of the experimental. Their recipe for modern rock led to a rare 8.1 rating on Pitchfork – a sure-fire stamp of approval from some of the most informed music critics in the US.

Artificial Brothers PH Scenen; Fri 00:30 Think alternative rock that draws quite a few comparisons with the music of Turboweekend. Artificial Brothers are a quintet all the way from Thisted, whose debut album Make Our Hearts Sway is set to drop just a few days after their performance in Vesterbro. Dee Brown Sat night At the tender age of 16, Dee Brown, or Daniel Bruhn Jensen, is one of the most talented new kids on the block in the circles of underground house. Having honed his skills at some of Copenhagen’s most revered nightlife venue, Dee Brown will set Vesterbro alight at this year’s festival.

The Soft Moon

Loppen; 21:00; 110kr Branded a ‘neo-post-punk’ band – a label that does little to define their catchy, synth-imbibed, beat-heavy music – the San Francisco quintet, led by the enigmatic Luis Vasquez, offer an altogether upbeat, modern yet harrowing musical articulation of the post-apocalyptic. Rising up from the saturated post-punk scene in San Francisco, Soft Moon released their self-titled debut record a couple of years back: a fulfilling and somewhat shadowy foray into the annals of ‘80s industrial synth-pop. Take a listen to their most popular track, ‘Breathe The Fire’, to get a real sense of what they’re up to.

Sekuoia Fri night Another prodigious talent in the field of electronic music, 19-year-old Patrick Madsen produces and plays contemplative, quirky music not too different to that of glitch-hop sensation Pretty Lights, who will be performing at Roskilde this June. Ulla Nova U-Teltet; Sat 17:45 Last but not least, Ulla Nova is a music experiment consisting of Danish songstress Ulla Nova’s soothing, almost angelic vocals fused with British producer Chris Thomaidis’ lightweight electronic pop beats in the background.

Ideal Bar; 21:00; 80kr Beal started out in his native Chicago as something of a bohemian outsider folk artist. As a busker, he played underground gigs on the streets and in the subway. Gaining a reputation as an impassioned, quirky character, the music industry caught on by the end of the ‘00s and soon after Beal released his debut record, Acousmatic Sorcery (2012). Beal is a contemporary singer-songwriter that stands out from the crowd; his signature discordant chords, metropolitan style and poetic lyrics mark his truly groundbreaking presence in the industry. Definitely one of the most intriguing shows this week.

Nightlife Tobias Winberg

Drone; Fri 22:00; Free Adm Every Copenhagener with at least a touch of class has spent a night at Nørrebro’s Drone. Tonight, Tobias Winberg – who is also a regular fixture at other alternative nights around the town including Ideal Bar’s Frankie Teardrop nights – will be playing a set of the latest rock ‘n’ roll, alternative and electro tunes just downstairs from the main bar. One of Copenhagen’s best-kept secrets and miles away from the tourist hotspot that is Strøget, it’s definitely worth checking out.

Huset i Magstræde; 20:00; 120kr Gradually making strides with their jangly, psychedelic-tinged surf-rock, the four-piece’s oddball sound has its antecedents in groups mostly from the ‘60s such as The Byrds, The Beach Boys and, of course, The Beatles. Their whirling, often hypnotising sound is neatly packaged in what is perhaps their finest single to date, a salute to Satan entitled ‘666.66’. With a vocalist who sounds uncannily similar to James Mercer of The Shins, and such a strong bed of influences, they’re certainly on to something. Daniel van der Noon tising ten-hour sets and ecstatic beats. Expect the set to go on until dawn, so for those planning on working on Saturday, it’s advised that you trade shifts.

Master Zanoongas Love Potion

Bakken; Fri 21:00; free adm This is one for the early birds at one of the most popular weekend venues in the stylish Kødbyen district of Vesterbro – often thought of as Copenhagen’s grimy answer to Berlin’s club-scene. A good distance away from the mainstream clubs nearer the centre and a tip-top insight into the city’s underground scene, it’s perfect in the spring. With artsy posters hanging around the cool-spots in town, it’s impossible not to wonder who Master Zanoongas is. Led by DJs Bob Love and Romann Andren, the setlist will take a journey into the psychedelic realms of disco-pop in what will most probably be a full house by midnight.

SOME OF THE FONDEST memories I have from my childhood days are those that stem from hours spent being creative with my mother. She must have had endless patience because I can clearly remember that my sister and I were never the neatest of artists, yet I walked away with a love of art that I try hard to instill in my own children. There are plenty of art supply shops in the city – we mostly use Panduro and Søsterne Grene for paints and canvases (www.pandurohobby.dk and www.grenes.dk). Then, when we are not busy at home, there are plenty of places to visit in and around Copenhagen to fire up their interests even more. Upon entering it can be quite hard deciding which pottery pieces you fancy painting, given the vastness of choice. Once you have chosen, you will be shown to your table and given a box of equipment to use. The equipment box is such a good idea that I have recreated it at home for myself: a wicker box containing a wide selection of paint brushes, sponge applicators and cloths, as well as a paint pallet – all neatly packed up for your convenience. HOME TO THE Holstein-Ledreborg family, the picturesque Ledreborg Castle dates back to 1745 and is one of Denmark’s most exquisitely romantic castles. BETTER LATE THAN NEVER. The other week I was, rightly, called out on my failure to provide the recipe for a classic English dish to coincide with Saint George’s Day. Funnily enough, it also occurred the year I had resolutely said to myself I’d start taking the national day seriously. Plus I’m always the first to defend English food when foreigners who’ve paid the best part of a tenner for fat-saturated fish and chips in central London lazily brand it awful. My ideal homage to the English kitchen would run along the lines of a no-holdsbarred dessert such as jam roly poly or sticky toffee pudding,

but seasonality is key, and now is not particularly the time to be bogging yourself down with heavy, cake-like puddings. So instead I’m going for that unmistakably-shaped, tentacle-like labour of love: asparagus. One of the pubs I worked in did this dish, and I spent hours both outside in the allotment helping to cultivate said spring shoot as well as in the kitchen preparing them. The recipe below is one I have recreated from my time at the pub – it never fails to hit the spot. It works as a starter, main course (just up the asparagus count) and, my favourite, a royal breakfast.

Asparagus with poached egg and parmesan 1 bunch of asparagus (or 3-4 spears per person) Eggs Parmesan cheese Cracked black pepper Olive oil Vinegar TO PREPARE the asparagus, wash under a cold tap and then, taking each spear in your hand, feel an inch or so up from the base of the spear and carefully snap off the bottom bit (you should find the ‘biting point’ easily – remember, the key to good asparagus is, like the Italians would advocate with pasta, is achieving the perfect al dente bite: not too soft, not too hard, but with a definitive crunch). Using a sharp knife, remove the bitter triangular flaps from the stems. You can peel the whole things but I advise against this.

Heat some butter in a pan on a medium-high heat and add the asparagus, cooking for 3-4 minutes on each side. If you’ve got a griddle pan (or, in the summer a barbeque) use this as it tastes better and scars the vegetables with charred stripes that also look great. Also, if you’re serving to guests or pre-blanching for later frying, grilling or steaming, you will wish to retain the asparagus’s luscious green colour. Boiling in hot water for a few minutes before plunging them straight into icy water is the way to do this. This will prevent them from discolouring if set aside in the fridge for a day or so. When your egg water is bubbling furiously, add a dash of vinegar as this helps the egg to bind better. Carefully drop your egg in and cook for 2 ½ - 3 ½ minutes. Lay the asparagus on a plate, put the egg on top and sprinkle with grated parmesan cheese. Finish with black pepper and a drizzle of olive oil.

They are also varied, but all of them cost 70kr (at least until the menu changes). The latest scoop, a piece of confirmed information, is that there are changes in the shaker as we speak, concerning widening the range of cocktails and the way they are served. The plan is to suggest a cocktail to fit each burger, so that the eating experience is enhanced. Whether the

AS FAR AS burgers go, Cock’s & Cows is probably one of, if not the best place to grab a juicy bite in Copenhagen. It’s a very cosy, rather small place on the basement level with a couple of tables put outside in the warmer months. Situated on Gammel Strand, it offers a nice view of Thorvaldsen’s Museum (when it’s not enclosed by the fence). Don’t let the name confuse you. It’s not a place of questionable purposes. It’s a great bar to eat a burger (cow) and wash it down with a cocktail (hence the cock!). The food is truly fantastic. The side-orders are varied and will meet the expectations of both the strict fastfood enthusiasts and the greens-eating crowd: there are onion rings and chips and different salads and other greens with a selection of sauces and garnishes. The main stage, however, belongs to the burgers, obviously. So far, there are eight types available on the menu, plus a speciality of the house that is changed every three months. Eight might seem like a small amount, but honestly how often does one go to a burger joint? Plus, the burgers are so delicious that you just stick with your favourite and enjoy the ride. Everything from the bun to the meat is fresh and aromatic. The veggies are crunchy and juicy. C & C’s cooks don’t use any shady, subquality products. The very sight of the burger is a lovely picture, add the olfactory factor and your mouth starts watering like Pavlov’s dogs. The burger is eaten Danish style: with a fork and a knife. It is a silly and funny way to do it, but with these giants (like the Governator, a two cutlet monster tower of a sandwich) there is simply, in the immortal words of Blur, no other way. Eating it the traditional way would probably end up in a huge mess, with sauces flowing everywhere and veggies decorating your trousers and the floor. Using cutlery is simply a much cleaner, albeit strange, affair. All the burgers at Cock’s & Cows are brilliant and different from one another. The majority have a standard beef cutlet with different garnishes and veggies, making it stand apart from the others. If you crave a chicken fillet in your sandwich, Marco Polo offers that choice splashed with mango chutney. There is the obligatory Miss Veggie vegetarian version and a pork chop one: the Bohemian Pork Rib. So to each their own. Everyone will find

OCIOPATH Admiral General Aladeen (Cohen) is ruler and oppressor over the mighty nation of Wadiya. While travelling to New York to address the United Nations, his uncle (Kingsley) attempts to have Aladeen killed and replaced by a look-a-like, so that he can assume power and sell off Wadiya’s oil deposits under the guise of democracy. Stripped of his wealth and beard, Aladeen must expose the conspiracy against him before it’s too late. Cohen’s fans will recall the tepid disappointment of Ali G: Indahouse (2002). The Dictator shares the fiction approach of that film and confirms the superiority of Cohen’s fiction/ documentary hybrids over these pure fictions. One thing that doesn’t carry well from the former is the moronic nature of his characters. With the Ali G sketches, Borat and Brüno, the stupidity of his characters was the crucial element that served as bait to smoke out the racists, bigots and liars lurking just beneath his victims’ smiley facades. In those situations we knew Cohen was also there somewhere, laughing behind his mask. We were in on the joke. In purely fictionalised worlds such as The Dictator, Cohen disappears into his character – we don’t have the pleasure of laughing with him, only at his creation. It’s somehow a colder experience altogether..

Impressively the review manages to avoid mentioning Colonel Gadaffi – chosen because Cohen is a gratuitous swine ... and he’s dead In Chaplin’s masterpiece The Great Dictator (1940), which seems to have inspired Cohen’s film, we see an oppressed Jewish barber assume the Fuhrer’s identity and ultimately bring peace to Europe. The plot parallels of stolen facial hair and dopplegängers are striking, but Chaplin’s intended victim is the Nazi regime, a worthy and timely opponent for a man who could command a global audience. Cohen on the other hand, the son of a Welsh father and Israeli mother is more unfocused in his criticism: the general target of which could be interpreted as everyone except the Jewish community (with particular fun

poking at Muslim nations). When at one point Aladeen has an epiphany and decides to become ‘a nice guy’, he miraculously starts using Yiddish. Suddenly the film starts to look like propaganda. It is suspicious when everyone else gets ribbed: Americans from Clooney to Cheney, leaders from Berlusconi to Kim Jong Il, Mountain goat farmers, Sudanese tribes and even homeless people – I’m not suggesting he pick on Jewish people indiscriminately (such as that sweet elderly couple in Borat – who were incidentally, the only vaguely redeemable characters in that film), but if he’s making a political comedy, how about a dig

at the shady Jewish lobbying in DC or the human rights violations committed by the Israeli government on a daily basis. Not funny you say? Well, there’s nothing funny about gang rape either, but that doesn’t stop Cohen trying to make us laugh about it several times in this film. The major contrast between his two fictions and his two hybrid films are his bravery. When Brüno was deep in redneck territory and snogging another man in a wresting cage, you had to admire his balls (almost literally). Where as seeing Cohen in this constructed world taking pot shots at everyone, except those closer to home,

seems a little ... cowardly. All this might even be forgivable if so many jokes didn’t fall flat. Genuinely funny moments are too few, and almost all of those aren’t politicised. Instead, they succeed on Cohen’s comic timing and physicality. The end features a speech that mirrors Chaplin’s final speech in The Great Dictator. While not as eloquent or moving, it is commendable in its critique of US foreign policy and we’re allowed an all too brief glimpse at Cohen’s signature heroism. Of course, there’s also the obligatory penis shot. It’s getting tired. He needs new schtick.

Makes The Crow look like Citizen Kane The Raven (15) Dir: James McTeigue; US thriller, 2012, 111 mins; John Cusack, Luke Evans, Alice Eve, Brendan Gleeson

IVEN HIS macabre style of writing, Edgar Allan Poe probably would have liked the idea of something that made him turn in his grave, but even he would have drawn the line at the film The Raven.

This gothic thriller, starring John Cusack as the infamous author, revolves around a poorly developed storyline of a madman who begins committing horrific murders inspired by Poe’s darkest works. As with all predicable thrillers, a deadly game of cat and mouse ensues in which a young 19th century Baltimore detective, Emmett Fields (Evans), joins forces with Poe in a quest to get inside the killer’s mind and stop him from making Poe’s brutal stories a blood chilling reality. From beginning to end, The Raven lacks creativity and cleverness. Director James

McTeigue (V for Vendetta, Ninja Assassin) appears to have no real understanding of creating terror, and as such, what could have been a witty pastiche simply ended up being another cheesy slice-anddice horror flick – think Saw meets Sherlock Holmes. Whilst in theory the film appears to have it all, the miscasting and a mind-numbing lack of twists have let it down badly. Even, the director can’t even pull darkness off very well. Poe would probably appreciate the irony that it’s a good 13 years since John Cusack made a really well received film – Being John Malkovich – and he is utterly

unconvincing in the role of Poe and perhaps only cheesyrole-lover Nicolas Cage could have done a worse job. As for Brendan Gleeson, who plays Colonel Hamilton in the movie, he really should have known better. Overall The Raven is thinly scripted, unevenly acted, and just generally preposterous. This film really is a disgrace to the legacy of Edgar Allen Poe – 111 minutes watching a raven perched on window sill would offer more thrills. So save your money, stay home and read his works instead. JESSICA O’SULLIVAN

Shame (15) Dir: Steve McQueen; UK drama, 2011, 101 mins; Michael, Carey Mulligan, Nicole Beharie Shame is a claustrophobic drama of intensity and urgency. It will make any recent films seem trivial and tame, a strange and unique beast indeed. It’s mature drama, bravely tackling complicated subject matter for those looking to experience something different. It’s original, visceral and disquieting - in the way only cinema can be. MW

Avoid like the Plague Battleship (15) Dir: Peter Berg; US sci-fi action, 2012, 130 mins; Alexander Skarsgård, Brooklyn Decker, Liam Neeson This film is terribly clichéd, the characters are generally underdeveloped, the acting was bad, and there basically is no storyline. LD

Dark Shadows (11) Dir: Gary Ross; US sci-fi, 2012, 142 mins; Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson There is absolutely nothing dark about this film and the only thing lurking in the shadow is a huge amount of wasted potential. A man-made monster may well be a feature retained from the original series, however in this case the man is Burton and the monster is Dark Shadows. AS

Journey to the Mysterious Island (11) Dir: Brad Peyton; US sci-fi action, 2012, 94 mins; Josh Hutcherson, Dwayne Johnson, Vanessa Hudgens This is one of those 50kr family adventure movies that you might consider picking up from the DVD box on the counter in the gas station if only to keep the kids entertained for the rest of the drive. My advice would be: DON’T. MW

Act of Valour (15) Dir: Mike McCoy; US action, 2012, 101 mins; Roselyn Sánchez, Nestor Serrano, Emilio Rivera Act of Valor stars a group of active-duty Navy SEALs in a story of contemporary global anti-terrorism. While Act of Valour might work as a recruiting poster for impressionable teenagers, it still is a distasteful and foolish film. MH

Also Playing We Need to Talk About Kevin (7) Dir: Lynne Ramsay; UK, US drama, 2011, 112 mins; Tilda Swinton, John C Reilly, Ezra Miller Kevin’s mother struggles to love her strange child, despite the increasingly vicious things he says and does as he grows up. But Kevin is just getting started, and his final act will be beyond anything anyone imagined. It’s not an easy story to tell, but the filmmakers do it well. MH

American Pie (7) Dir: Jon Hurwitz; US comedy, 2012, 110 mins; Jason Biggs, Alyson Hannigan, Seann William Scott The last serving of pie may not be the best, but it certainly is tasty in its own right and a worthy clinger to a fantastic (in a manner of speaking) series of films. KE

Dir: Timo Vuorensolas; Fin/ Aus/Ger action/com, 2012, 93 mins; Julia Dietze, Götz Otto, Christopher Kirby, Peta Sergeant Iron Sky has proved that the studio system has its uses; this script would likely have seen a drafts before getting greenlit. As it is, Vuorensolas goosestepped out of obsecurity and right into the cine-scheisse. Not to knock the monumental achievement of assembling this huge production, but just because you can, doesn’t necessarily mean you should. MW

Dir: Luc Besson; Fra/UK drama, 2012, 135 mins; Michelle Yeoh, David Thewlis, Jonathan Woodhouse The Lady is the extraordinary story of Aung San Suu Kyi and her husband, Michael Aris. It is also the epic story of the peaceful quest of the woman who is at the core of Burma’s democracy movement. Besson does draw the best out of his two leads, and the subject is an extraordinary woman. So why is it such an ordinary film? MH

The Secret History of the Eurovision Song Contest DR1, Mon 23:35 & Wed 23:15

THE DAYS of backing an outsider to win Eurovision (semi-finals: Tue & Thu 21:00 on DR1 & SV1), during the final itself are long gone. Every year Google Analytics predicts the winner based on the number of searches for that song in the aftermath of its screening, so if you want to arrange an opportunistic familyonly sweepstake, just check who the bookies have as favourites ahead of the voting – they won’t be wrong. In the meantime, you’ll enjoy it more if you watch The Secret History of the Eurovision Song Contest (DR1, Mon 23:35 & Wed 23:15) and Facing The Music: Eurovision in Azerbaijan (BBC World, Sat 10:10 or 22:10). The programmes are respectively about the political pasts and presents of both the competition and Europe.

Indeed, the two are so linked that of the seven countries who contested the first ever edition in 1956, six went on to become the founding nations of the EEC one year later. The followers of the founding father of Kumare, a new ‘religion’ in Phoenix, don’t realise that their guru is a fake. New Jersey-born journalist Vikram Gandhi fools thousands into believing he is the one with made-up chants and fake yoga positions, but unlike Borat, he does eventually come clean on camera. The Mayor of the Sunset Strip (DR2, Sat 17:00), about music guru Rodney Bingenheimer, is an open book from the start – it’s a revealing, fun comb-through of the last 50 years of popular music.
