HERE COMES DISTORTION, and it’s raining. What a shame. It was only this time last week that the weather was so nice, like one of those long, lost weekends before the Great War. Not that I’m comparing Distortion to the First World War. Sure, the word bomb-site does spring to mind. And there will be no doubts in anyone’s mind that this is the only event of note currently taking place. And both involved people going over the top. But it really is a loose comparison. But beyond it, there’s not much going on. Euro 2012 is still a whole week away from kicking off. Sop if you don’t like tennis, you’re rather stuck, indoors watching the rain. You could take a photograph. Hark! There’s an idea. Of a grimy city vista accentuated by the downpour. Even better: a photo of revellers getting soaked outside while you

get high on your supply of July reading material. Personally, I’m looking forward to reading Skagboys, the prequel to Trainspotting. I found the sequel disappointing – it was distracting picturing Ewan McGregor etc while I was reading it. At least when they make Skagboys, hopefully as a TV production instead of film, the original cast will be far too old to play younger versions of themselves 15 years ago. Anyhow I digress, for photography fans this week, we’ve got not just one but three features on the subject. First off is a preview of an exhibition of the work of Lee Miller (see page G3), the US female icon, who was famously snapped taking a saucy paddle in Adolf Hitler’s bath shortly after Germany’s surrender in 1945. And then we’ve got a preview of this city’s photography festival (see G9), which is bigger and better than ever – all eleven days of it – plus a guide to all the professional photography services out there (also G9), which will immortalise your special moments forever. Even if they did involve you getting soaked to the skin at Distortion.

Deep sky blue, the colour of choice of Manchester City and Eddie Bunker in Reservoir Dogs

Blå

Stor Carl, Dansescenen i Dansehallerne, Pasteursvej 14-24, Cph V; starts Fri, ends June 9, performances at 19:00 Fri & Sat, June 7-9; tickets 3570kr, www.teaterbilletter.dk; info@ dansescenen.dk, 3329 1010; duration 30 mins; www.dansehallerne.dk NO, NOT A STORY about a little guy who lives in a blue world, but a show about the melancholic feeling connected to the colour, inside and outside. It’s an abstract dance show performed by ten young women from the Juniorkompagniet. It takes place under water, though there isn’t any water on stage, but merely an abstract space in a parallel world. The idea behind the show arose from an interest in water in general. “It’s the feeling of being underwater. It’s an entirely different world down there, and we don’t know what’s hiding. It’s like a parallel world to our own, which I find really interesting,” says Emma-Cecilia Ajanki, who is one half of The Mob, the creators of the show. The other half is Julia Giertz, and they’re both graduates from the National School of Contemporary Dance in Denmark. Since

Performance Tivoli Cabaret

Tivoli, Vesterbrogade 3, Cph V; ends Sep 22; performances Tue-Thu 20:00, Thu-Sat 20:30; Tickets: 315-415kr; duration: 180 mins, www.tivolicabaret.dk Complete with little round tables and singers who double as waiting staff, Cabaret at Tivoli is an evening of light-hearted kitsch entertainment. Incorporating stand-up comedy, magic, drag queens, sketches, opera and music medleys, this will be a fun variety show, whether you take advantage of the free bar or not. Most of the acts are in Danish, but the cheesy pop hits are in a language everyone can understand. EB

they created The Mob in 2007, they have created several shows, performances and installations, and even an electro-pop concert, using the body as the primary source of communication. This show is the first in which they have divided the tasks: Ajanki is in charge of the choreography and Giertz is in charge of the music. Ajanki explains that the colour blue holds the show together, both with an underwater theme and through the different universes of the colour. “This melancholic feeling you get underwater is so beautiful that it almost hurts, and the colour of blue both symbolises the water and the feeling of being blue,” she says. But the show is more than that – it’s also about the individual in and outside of the community. Through movements, music and surreal landscapes, the show asks the question “Does the individual exist because of or despite of the group – or not at all?” The ten young women dance together as if they are synchronised swimming underwater accompanied by the sound of water, synthesisers and Tchaikovsky’s ballet The Nutcracker. They follow each other’s movements over and over again.

The Way the World Ends

TeaterHUSET; Rådhusstræde 13 (entrance through Magstræde), Cph K; ends Sat; daily performances at 19:00; Tickets: 60kr, www.billetto.dk As its title suggests, this performance explores human beings at their darkest moments, from those who have lost a loved one, to those living in fearing of each other or the final inevitable moment of death. But it’s not all doom and gloom. The production also reveals humans’ acceptance of the absurdity of life. The themes are presented through an interesting collage of texts, incorporating theatre, physical performance, video projections, music and song. The performance is entirely in English. EB

Albert Herring

“Other than the different universes of blue, the show is also about identity. What is identity? And the synchronised movements will show that only through the identical can you find the small difference,” explains Ajanki. It’s safe to say the show will send you on an emotional melancholic journey, where questions about community and identity will be posed as the young women float together in the exotic underwater world. “It’s going to be a journey for the audience through different universes of blue that everybody can relate to,” promises Ajanki. The dancers from Juniorkompagniet are girls ranging from the age of 14 to 18 who challenge their artistic expressions through their meetings with the professional choreographers. The company has existed since 1999 as a stepping stone to a professional dancing career, putting on two shows a year at Dansescenen. The show isn’t aimed at a certain age group, just to anyone who would like to experience this parallel universe and is willing to come and be blue.

Gamle Scene, Kongens Nytorv 9, Cph K, ends June 8; performances at 20:00 (unless stated) on Sat (12:00), Mon, Wed, June 8; Tickets: 95-495kr; 170 mins; sung in English with Danish supertitles; www.kglteater.dk English composer Benjamin Britten didn’t like snobs, and Albert Herring is one example of this penchant. Composed in 1946-47, it’s a chamber opera in three acts exploring society’s reaction to a strange individual, a shy bachelor who is crowned the King of May an honour normally bestowed on women. It’s hilarious and reminiscent of English opera’s origins as jigs performed at the end of plays at court. And who doesn’t like a good ol’ jig? EB

Sidste skrig

Skuespilhuset Store Scene; Sankt Annæ Plads 36, Cph K; ends Wed, performances Mon-Sat 20:00; tickets: 75495kr; Duration: 140 minutes (includes intermission); www.kglteater.dk Watch the Royal Ballet’s dancers perform choreography by the world’s best. The show’s four pieces are devised by top choreographers: Wayne McGregor, Yuri Possokhov, Patrick Delcroix and the acclaimed Danish former dancer Tina Tarpgaard. British choreographer McGregor’s intense, acrobatic and sometimes lyrical choreography plays on contrasts, while Tarpgaard explores how to use technology in an interesting way. Starting out as a model in front of the camera for American Vogue in 1927, Miller quickly moved behind it to create an individual body of work inspired heavily by Surrealism. The surrealists used visual imagery that showed ordinary objects in strange and unusual ways, in order to create compelling and often emotional art. This exhibition at Øregaard includes photographs from many periods of her life, organised by the Lee Miller Archive in England and the Mjellby Konstmuseum in Halmstad in Sweden. As a model in New York, Lee Miller had two years of fame posing for renowned photographers including Edward Steichen and Arnold Genthe. Her move to Paris in 1929 to become the assistant, model, collaborator and lover of avant-garde photographer Man Ray changed the course of her work. Together they used new

darkroom techniques like solarisation for artistic effect, with an image that is partially reversed in tone. Miller made portraits and satirical drawings, and photographed enigmatic street scenes and elegant near-abstractions. Her creativity and technique during this period resulted in some of the most radical nudes of the time - described as transforming the female torso into a phallus. From 1932-1934, Miller was back in New York. She developed a close rapport with sculptor Joseph Cornell and exhibited at the pioneering gallery run by Julien Levy. Her work included celebrity portraits, fashion and advertising work, done with an eye for odd juxtaposition and humour. She soon moved again, however, spending the rest of the decade travelling. Miller lived in Cairo with her first husband, Aziz Eloui Bey. She worked in the Egyptian deserts in Egypt, producing works with abstract titles such as Portraits of Space. In 1937, while visiting in Paris she fell in love with the British surrealist painter Roland Penrose and travelled with him in England, France and Romania, documenting the journeys extensively. When World War II officially broke out, Miller was living in London with Penrose and chronicling the blitzed city for Vogue. She wrote feature articles along with her photographs, which included documentary, fashion and

portraiture for the magazine. In 1942 she managed to become an accredited field correspondent with the US Army, an impressive step considering that the British were not accepting any women in this position. Her dispatches on field hospitals in Normandy, the Liberation of Paris, the fighting around the German-occupied citadel in St Malo, and the death camps of Dachau and Buchenwald used surrealist imagery to portray the horror of what had actually and unbelievably happened. Her work spotted the absurd horrors of war and its leaders with striking and memorable visual style as well as content. When she and fellow war reporter David E Scherman found themselves in Munich in Hitler’s old apartment around the time that he committed suicide in Berlin, they lived there for three days. The resulting portrait, Lee Miller in Hitler’s Bath, was reprinted around the world and caused endless debate about what it meant for the journalist to be in the Führer’s personal bath. With this creative use of imagery and ideas, Lee Miller broadened the definition of photojournalism and expanded the notion of documentary. In the elegant space of the Øregaard Museum, each of her selected works pops out with the force of the personality that was at work behind the camera. ALEXIS KUNSAK

If the Copenhagen street festival Distortion isn’t your thing, you can head to Skive and hear an assortment of Danish and international acts including (clockwise l-r): Rasmus Seebach, D-A-D, Robyn and Calvin Harris

Jutland’s mainstream Distortion alternative Skive Festival

Friday -Saturday 695kr, 895kr w/ camping www.skivefestival.dk

T

HE FESTIVAL season has started, and that either means you’ll sit and cry about all the amazing festival line-ups you’re reading about the day after, or you’ll have the time of your life listening to some of your favourite bands. There is always something special about the festival atmosphere: getting dropped off a kilometre from the festival area so you can act like you’ve

been hitchhiking; walking five kilometres to the camping spot that’s already full; standing in a queue that would put Tivoli to shame to get an overpriced beer; being disgusted by the smell of your armpits while realising you’ve got three more days to go; and complaining about the weather – rain makes mud, wind makes dust, heat makes sweat, you can’t win. And still, if you wake up in your tent on the festival’s final day next to a halfeaten doner kebab, you’ll be sad it’s all over. This weekend offers two festival options. You can wade through piss-filled streets here in Copenhagen or you can es-

cape the madness and head to the tranquillity of northern Jutland for the Skive Festival. Started in 1993 as a one-day event, nowadays it’s a four-day festival with four different stages. Among the highlights over the festival’s last two days – Friday and Saturday – is the Scottish DJ singer, songwriter and record producer Calvin Harris, who has already achieved great success following his goldselling debut album, I Created Disco (2008). His second studio album, Ready for the Weekend (2009), reached the top spot on the UK Albums Chart. Also playing is the Swedish singer with the asymmetri-

cal haircut Robyn, who blends the gritty sound of American R&B with the sunny pop of her homeland. She became known in the late ’90s for her worldwide dance-pop hit ‘Do You Know (What It Takes)’ from her debut album Robyn Is Here (1997). The popularity of her number-one hit ‘With Every Heartbeat’ and subsequent album release Robyn (2005) brought her mainstream success worldwide. Don’t forget to check out the Russians of Swanky Tunes. Of all the exciting new house sounds coming out of the East these days, Swanky Tunes definitely ranks among the most noteworthy. The group formed

in 1998, experimenting with different electronic styles in pursuit of their own sound. They were named ‘Best Musical Group’ in 2006 and 2007 at the Russian Dance Music Awards and they are currently ranked number 14 among the Top 100 DJs of Russia. And whilst the acts mentioned are all foreign, the main focus will be on Danish acts. Friday will provide a chance to see up-and-coming R&B star Lukas Graham and classic Danish rockers TV-2, as well as Ulige Numre, the band behind the feel-good single ‘København’, and P3 award-winners I Got You on Tape.

Saturday will feature tween favourite Rasmus Seebach, hard rockers D-A-D, Tim Christensen & The Damn Crystals, and semi-‘retired’ Nørrebro rapper Nicholas Kidd. If these don’t trip your trigger, let’s be frank: while you’re waiting for the bands you came to see, you’re going to have to sit tight through acts that suck. But you knew this going in, didn’t you? Special two-day tickets are available at skivefestival.dk, either with or without access to the camping. Oh, and don’t get me wrong: I do love festivals. MIKE HOFMAN

Mike Skinner

Distortion: Lastbilscenen; 22:00; 250kr (1-day pass) Today is the Vesterbro leg of the Distortion festival and with big names popping up all over, The Streets’ MC Mike Skinner probably tops the list. The Brit will be playing a DJ set hosted by Soundvenue. It’s a little hazy as to what time Skinner will be on stage with the party officially starting at 16.00, but warm-up acts include: Denmark’s rising hip-hop talent Kesi, and Danish DJ Oh Boy! so there’s plenty to sink your teeth into, if not here then at one of the other venues in the quarter. See www.cphdistortion.dk for further details.

uban salsa sensation Issac Delgado added a Carnivalesque touch to Vega’s May lineup with a formidable concert at Store Vega on Friday evening. Delgado – or El Chevere, as he is often called – was in a flamboyant mood, backed by a multipiece orchestra that performed with flair, passion and creativity throughout the lengthy concert. In spite of the ongoing Carnival and Vesterbro Festival, Friday’s show managed to attract quite a decent showing even though it wasn’t sold out. Danish salsa enthusiast Stine Ortvald warmed up the venue with a troupe of engaged salsa dancers who did their bit to get the ball rolling, dancing to a rhythmic mix that got the crowd on their toes. Delgado and his orchestra casually stepped onto the scene a bit later than scheduled and started

Distortion: Trailerscenen; 22:00; 250kr (1-day pass) For those who can’t quite get in step with dance music, Trailerscenen will be catering to the rock crowd. Headlining will be the American art rock outfit Bodyguard, fronted by the eccentric vocalist and pseudo-intellectual, James Ferraro (pictured). Perhaps the two most exciting groups are Copenhagen’s trendy and upcoming Kiss Kiss Kiss and Ice Cream Cathedral, who are at the forefront of the city’s growing art rock scene and have been drawing in big crowds.

the show with several tunes that failed to get people dancing. In fact, even after several songs in, most of the crowd was still static and unenthused. But things did heat up as Delgado himself became more engaged with the crowd, which in turn responded commendably, as people unleashed the salsa moves they’d been saving all night. Standing in the middle of a salsa concert’s equivalent of a mosh pit was a unique and interesting experience: a maze of spins, swaps and swift, welltimed movements in tune with the rich percussive elements of the music on stage. There were smiles and pleasant exchanges all around, as the concert geared up, peaking as a lively if not chaotic ensemble punctuated by epic instrumental moments here and there. In many ways the scene resembled downtown Havana – a warm cocktail of emotions, colours and laughs as people of all ages and of all ethnicities were bound together under the banner of rhythmic salsa music. This reviewer was particularly impressed by a spine-tingling piano solo midway through the

Amager Bio; 22:00; 100kr Emerging at the turn of the millennium, the Danish melancholic rock outfit kickstarted their career with a well-received debut record, Privacy (2001), that tapped into the darker tones of rock and was laced with morose lines of poetic expression. Soon after, lead-singer Robert Lund traded in his native Copenhagen for New York and later Berlin, which inevitably led to the group continuing life as a trio. Keeping up the momentum, though inevitably changing the aesthetic of their sound – minus the original vocalist of course – the group’s new material has been met with mixed reviews.

Awesome Tapes from Africa

Distortion: Steel Area Tent; 22:00; 250kr (1-day pass) Looking down the long list of names playing sets at Distortion’s final party, it’s possible that you may miss out on a few of the lesser-known names. Awesome Tapes From Africa, or at least the DJ behind www.awesometapes. com – one of the most incredible music blogs online – will be digging deep into his eclectic collection of some of the most intrepid music genres from the very interior of Africa. This is an incredible booking, and the Distortion bookers deserve a big pat on the back for this one.

Agent Fresco

Loppen; 21:00; 140kr Iceland’s fascinating new export comes in the shape of a four-bit rock ‘n’ roll band. Starting out in 2008, and going on to win Iceland’s national battle of the bands competition in the same year, it’s been four years in the making, but the band have finally released their debut album, A Long Time Listening. Heavily inspired by America’s rich rock scene, the group tap into an oddball rock sound that takes in funk, jazz, emo and progressive elements. Those who remember the Danish prog-rock act Rosa will be intrigued to learn that Arnór Dan Arnársson is the band’s lead singer.

performance and a sensational trumpet equivalent towards the end, both of which cemented the foundations of what was a very lively and engaging show. Even in spite of the fact that the concert started late and that it took time to climax, credit must be given to Delgado and his orchestra for delivering a

steamy concert that managed to create a wonderful sense of collectiveness, a show that salsa enthusiasts will no doubt hold in high regard for quite some time to come.

Allan Mutuku-Kortbæk

Skateparken; Fri 22:00; 250kr The summer is now in full swing and festivals and outdoor concerts are popping up across Denmark over the coming months. Copenhagen’s annual Distortion festival is perhaps the most eagerly anticipated of them all – behind Roskilde of course – with the four quarters of the city taking it in turns to host colossal street parties laden with DJs, inflatable monsters and, if my memory serves me correctly, even ex-military tanks. Arguably one of the best line-ups of disco and house music that Copenhagen has seen this year, the venue will be rammed so be sure to get in early. Each of the four names could be headliners, but Weatherall is probably the best-known in the industry. Making his foray into the London dance-scene in the early ‘90s, Weatherall’s career really took off when he collaborated with the likes of Danny Rampling, Paul Oakenfold and Pete Heller – who were just bud-

Alan Haynes

Mojo Bar; 19:00; 100kr Around since the ‘70s, bluesman Haynes has earned himself a reputation for having performed alongside – and in some cases collaborated with – some of the best-known names in blues including John Lee Hooker, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Robert Cray. Haynes is known for his textbook finger-picking and unreal ability to shift chords. Listed as one of Mojo Bar’s very few ‘Top Picks’, most probably due to his large cult following in Scandinavia and hyped status as an old bluesman, tonight promises to be one of Mojo’s gigs of the year. Frankie Teardrop

Ideal Bar; Fri 22:00; Free Adm With the Distortion Festival moving on to the streets of Vesterbro, Frankie Teardrop offers a rock alternative to a night that will be inundated with electro, house, grime, garage and dub DJs. A weekly club night that makes it easy for nostalgic hipsters to get their kicks, one of the in-house DJs will be playing an eclectic playlist that will both revisit the halcyon days of rock from the 1950s and 60s right up to contemporary releases.

Darkness Falls

Culture Box; Fri 23:00; 70kr The female art-rock duo formed three years ago here in Copenhagen. Flirting both with electropop and gritty rock elements the pair have struck a neat balance to create an altogether atmospheric, romantic and sleek sound that strikes a resemblance with The XX. With Distortion at this hour generally turning a little messy on the streets, moving indoors is a bright idea. Daniel van der Noon

now as a judge on American Idol. Coming back to what she’s good at (or at least, what she does best – relatively speaking), the diva from the Bronx will perform at Forum on November 3. Tickets can be found at www.billetnet. dk for 570 kroner a pop – if you like that sorta thing. After that short delve into the heart of the mainstream, let’s take a musical interlude with another American act, The Black Keys. This duo from Ohio made the most of the garage rock revival in the early 2000s. Dan Auerbach (guitar and vocals) is kind of a legend among anyone who’s had the pleasure of hearing his work, while drummer Patrick Carney is a towering man who hunches over his drums – arms flailing wildly because he can’t see without his Buddy Holly glasses. The band have made seven studio albums – their latest offering is El Camino, which was released late last year. They are everything that good modern day rock ‘n’ roll should be. They are everything Nickelback are not. Go and check them out at Carlsberg Tap1 on August 13. Tickets are a snatch at 340kr from www.billetlugen.dk. Now that your pulses are racing a little, it’s time to give Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers a mention. The band hail from Florida (do you sense a theme developing here?) and formed in 1976. Just last month, the band had five vintage guitars stolen from their rehearsal space in Los Angeles. The guitars have since been recovered by police, which was a shame for the guy who did it, because he missed out on

BETH DITTO IS FAT and she knows it. In fact, she uses her fatness to her glorious advantage. Like a well-endowed opera singer, Ditto has some pretty powerful pipes, and her size makes her an impressive fixture on the stage with indie rock band Gossip. The Arkansas singer-songwriter’s charisma and spunk come from her unassailable confidence. Having become somewhat of a sex symbol (opinions are divided on this) and a poster girl for lesbians everywhere, the often scantily-clad Ditto posed nude for the cover of LOVE Magazine in 2009, and opened the John Paul Gaultier spring fashion show in Paris in 2010. But it hasn’t all been smooth; there have been some bumps of cellulite along the way – like when she caused a minor scandal in 2006, after telling NME Magazine she ate squirrels as a child. But fat jokes aside, Gossip are great and you should get the Beth Ditto experience at the appropriate venue of Store Vega in Copenhagen on November 15. Tickets are 250kr – go get your paws on some at www.vega.dk. The next artist listed here has three things in common with Ditto. (1) She is coming to Copenhagen in November, (2) she is American, and (3) she is also celebrated for her large derriere. Yes, it’s Jenny from the block, J.LO, Jennifer Lopez. Aside from having an incredibly successful music career, J.LO has hopped her booty across different areas of showbiz, launching a lacklustre movie career (2004 film Shall We Dance illustrates this point), appearing as the face of L’Oreal, and

a tidy US$75,000 – the “no questions asked” reward the band had offered for the return of their prized instruments. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers will hopefully have a better time of it here when they play Horsens Arena on June 12. Get in quick for tickets (615kr) at www.billetlugen.dk. The band is also headlining the Isle of Wight Festival later in June alongside Pearl Jam – another act coming to Denmark this summer. Pearl Jam are scheduled to perform at Forum on July 10. Tickets are pricey, but diehard fans will happily kiss away 1,132kr at www. viagogo.dk. Still in the rock vein, ‘80s group Walking With Dinosaurs are playing several shows around Copenhagen in October. Get your tickets from 537kr at www.viagogo.dk. Speaking of dinosaurs, Eurovision regular, Denmark’s Birthe Kjær (see last week’s Who Is …? Column on page 18 of the newspaper)is playing Mølleparken on September 2 – tickets start from 125kr at www.billetnet.dk. Another act representing Scandinavia is Swedish duo First Aid Kit. The pair are popular among hipsters for their Fleet Foxes-like folk sound. It’s beautiful listening – see them play at Store Vega on November 11 for 200kr, www.vega.dk. If you can’t wait that long, Georgian-born Brit Katie Melua is folky enough. She’s at Kulturcentre Limfjord on June 28, with tickets available from 815kr at www.billetnet.dk. Or you can chuck it all in and run away to the circus. Or better yet, to a circus devoted to the music of Michael Jackson. Cirque du Soleil - The Immortal World Tour is coming to Parken on October 27 and 28. Tickets start at 465kr from www.billetnet.dk.

WHETHER EXPERIENCED through news media, art, advertising or social media, photography very much surrounds us in both public and private space. As a way of expression, it’s increasingly influencing our way of life with more and more people taking on the role as keen amateur photographers and picture sharers. People are snapping and sharing away, using applications such as mobile photo app Instagram and online pinboard Pinterest to illustrate whatever is on their minds through the medium of photography. As taking and sharing aesthetically pleasing photos becomes something anyone can do, it seems relevant to put this everyday use of the medium into perspective through a festival that is centred around professional photography. Now in its third year, the Copenhagen Photo Festival presents professional photography throughout the city. Founded in 2010, the festival serves as a platform to promote photo-related activities throughout Copenhagen, many of which are happening at the Photo City at the Carlsberg premises. Last year, the festival had 25,000 official visitors and its organisers are expecting an increased number this year as it has gained popularity overseas. Compared to last year, the number of applicants has more than doubled. This year, the festival has received 250 applications from photographers in 24 countries. “It’s amazing to receive applications all the way from countries as diverse as

Russia, Brazil and Japan. In only three years, we have succeeded in gaining international recognition and this is something we are very proud of,” says Julie Klitbo, the head and co-founder of the festival, who along with the selection board has evaluated around 4,000 submitted pieces. A major feature of the festival is to introduce photography to the people and bring it down to street level, so to speak. This means that not only galleries and museums are exhibiting, but also streets and city squares. In addition to this, all exhibitions are free of charge. “From the beginning, an important part of our vision behind the festival has been to present photography of a high standard without expecting visitors to pay for the experience,” says the festival’s other co-founder Rasmus Ranum. “Due to the sponsors, volunteers, the strong commitment of the city’s museums and galleries and, of course, the exhibiting

photographers, we have the chance to maintain a high artistic level of ambition and at the same time offer free admission. This is something we are very thankful for.” This year’s festival programme differs from last year’s programme as it has more artist talks, workshops and events. To top that off, 2012 is the centenary of the Danish press photographers’ union (the oldest of its kind in the world), and the festival is marking this by putting on several exhibitions of the press photographers’ work throughout Copenhagen. Some of you may already have seen their exhibition at Kongens Nytorv. The festival goes on for ten days, and anyone making their way through Copenhagen between June 7 and 17 stands a good chance at bumping into some world-class photography, either randomly on a city street or at one of the many galleries involved in the event. BY ELIZABETH DELLAPENNA

LIKE SO MANY others in the world, I adore Italian food. Usually, one thinks of pizza and pasta. And there are many other classic dishes that have been brought into the mainstream. But my absolute favourite Italian dish would have to be Osso Buco. Osso Buco consists of veal shank, which is the upper part of the leg on a calf. It includes the femur, or thighbone, which contains the most delicious treat: bone marrow. If you’ve never tasted marrow before, I would describe it as fatty and meaty, with a unique flavour. Traditionally, Osso Buco was made in the Lombardy

region of Italy and was originally flavoured with cinnamon and gremolata. This is a more modern, popular version of the recipe that features tomatoes. Personally, I hate gremolata, which is a mixture of parsley, lemon zest and garlic. I just don’t enjoy parsley that much. So I wanted to find a recipe that could stand on its own without the gremolata and I think this is it. While they do sell cuts of Osso Buco in the grocery store, I would recommend going to your local butcher. The quality of the meat is so much better and the price is still fairly reasonable.

move the meat from the pot and set aside. Add the onions, carrots, celery, and garlic to the drippings in the pot. Cook and stir for about five minutes. Stir in tomato sauce, water, basil, thyme, parsley and bay leaf. Return the meat to the pot. Bring to boil and then reduce to a simmer. Cover and cook for two and a half hours. To get a thicker sauce, remove the lid at least half an hour before it is done to allow some of the liquid to evaporate. Depending on how thick you would like it to be, you may need to experiment with varying lengths of time. Serve alongside rice, risotto, mashed potatoes, or pasta. I usually go with mashed potatoes, because I love mashed potatoes slathered in any kind of sauce. Enjoy!

Surrounded by meat, we’re hooked on this fish out of water The salty smell of the sea and fresh fish engulfed my nose as I walked into Kødbyen’s Fiskebar. As a restaurant that has been under the scrutiny of the likes of the New York Times, LA Times and Politiken, only to come out with shining reviews, I expected to find myself at a highly sophisticated, smartly-dressed (even black tie), silver service fish restaurant. But as I walked in through the doors, my expectations were thwarted as I was presented with a casual, quirky and retro bar/restaurant – a far cry from the usual elegance and refinement expected at quality fish restaurants these days. In this case, the sophistication was to be introduced to me later on, as the evening progressed. Upon arrival, we were recommended to start our evening with a glass of Cremant Rosé, Chateau de Passavant at the table outside. As I sat there, enjoying the beverage on that sunny afternoon, I couldn’t help but wonder about the location that Anders Selmer, the owner of Fiskebar, had chosen for his unique little venture. Set in the midst of Kødbyen, known to most foreigners here as the meat packing district, the restaurant is among the meat vendors and wholesale food vendors who supply ingredients to most of the restaurants in town. An unlikely location aesthetically, but practical one might think. Not so. Instead of choosing a location with an attractive postcode or one with a glorious history, or even a beautiful waterfront, Selmer chose Kødbyen due to its cultural and economic diversity: “We wanted to bring quality into the glass and on to the plate.” Indeed, as I was shown to our seats, I couldn’t help notice the old tiles covering the walls, dilapidated patch work on the ceiling and in a corner, and some mismatched dining décor, almost as if it was an after-thought. What isn’t an after-thought is the food and the service. Our first course was a serving of Limfjorden oysters served with a glass of chilled 2006 French Bourgogne Chardonnay ‘Cuvee Fiskebaren’. An interesting fact about the restaurant is that most of the ingredients are organic, and non-organic produce is only used when necessary to complement the flavour of the meal. As I devoured the delicious oysters, I looked around at the growing crowd in the restaurant. The queues of enquiring customers were beginning to form, along with the number of customers seated outside waiting for a table. My advice is to get a reservation in good time. Because, with the onset of the summer and upcoming events in the city, this place is guaranteed to be busy.

The decor might include dilapidated patch work, but it doesn’t detract from the dining experience

Following the oysters was our next course: the Swedish lumpfish roe with smoked cheese, crisp potato shell and cucumber. After this, I was served Atlantic sea scallops roasted in butter accompanied by cauliflower, wild mushrooms and hazelnuts, while my dining partner was served a dish of the house special, Fish and chips, which is a Baltic Sea, lightly-smoked Pollack served with homemade fried potatoes and raw remoulade. Primarily a fish restaurant, Kødbyen’s Fiskebar goes the extra mile to present gourmet Scandinavian and new age European

seafood dishes without extravagance and overindulgence. In other words, at Fiskerbar you will be served a grand meal presented with simplicity and humility. Their aim is to please their customers who are a good mix of food enthusiasts, tourists, the trendy, families, and just about anyone who enjoys a good plate of seafood and drop of wine. The next course was Hake meat fried in seaweed butter served with a glass of 2004 Esparses Vielle Vignes, followed by a course of four Nordic cheeses including a Røde Kristian hard cow cheese. For dessert we enjoyed Mutzo apples – a dish from Lilleøsh-

erbet made with raw goat’s milk, white chocolate and aquavit meringue - and Rye bread ice cream, consisting of spice bread, lemon gel, verbena and yoghurt, washed down with a glass of 2010 Riesling Auslese. All in all, an evening at Fiskebar can only be described as a unique experience in an eatery that defies the usual conventions, believing in a retro culture while keeping alive a rich seafood culture in the city’s upand-coming meat-packing district.

MARK WALKER

Prometheus

Dir: Ridley Scott; US sci-fi, 2012, 126 mins; Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, Guy Pearce, Logan Marshall-Green

Premiered May 31 Playing nationwide

T

HERE’S been endless buzz about this film for well over a year. For the real fanboys, Avengers and Dark Knight Rises are playing second fiddle to Prometheus in terms of this year’s most anticipated movies. This film, after all, marks the momentous return of a master to his most enduring creation. In 1979, Ridley Scott (Blade Runner, Gladiator) took a B-grade ‘haunted house in space’ script by scribes Dan O’Bannon and Ronald Shusset and surprised moviegoers with an A-grade masterpiece. Alien created an entire mythos and spawned numerous sequels. That film was all about stillness, interspersed with spikes of brutal violence and gruesome horror. The characters were real and recognisable. They smoked, swore and wore leather jackets. The tech was familiar, held together by screws and bolts. Blue collar workers in space. It was an original vision of our space-faring future. So, when I first saw the trailers for Prometheus, a ‘not really but sort of ’ prequel to Alien, I had my reservations. In this film, the characters appeared to wear mostly spandex and much of the tech looks like it was conceived by Steve Jobs. Charlie (Marshall-Green) and Elizabeth (Rapace) are partners in archeology and love. The film begins at the close of this century with their discovery of a 35,000-year-old cave painting in Scotland that, in conjunc-

Noomi Repace, surely the perfect choice to succeed Ripley, is let down by bad chemistry with Logan Marshall-Green (left) from The OC tion with much of their research, leads them to a distant planet. Funded by the shady Weyland corporation (familiar to fans of the franchise) a mission is undertaken to find an alien race whom we’re led to believe are the progenitors of humanity. Their ship Prometheus sets down next to an underground network of caves and tunnels. Here, with a team of geologists and biologists they search for answers to man’s biggest questions. The corporation though, and the ship’s resident android, may have other plans ... The opening scenes of an alien apparently spreading its DNA into the

Earth’s oceans and the aforementioned couple’s discovery of said painting in Scotland give an unexpected tone: there’s a smattering of CGI, some holding hands and a swelling score that’s almost as earnest as Titanic. It doesn’t feel related to Alien. Once the drama switches to space though, we’re thankfully in more familiar territory. An early canteen scene echoing the original film puts us on course. Make no mistake: much of the film is brilliant, if overdone. Michael Fassbender plays David 8, the ship’s android. The Alien films have always featured an android to varying effect, offsetting the

alien horror with more philosophical posturing over what it means to be human. To that end, Prometheus is no exception and Fassbender is spellbinding in the role. Amongst a criminally underused cast, he at least is given something to do – and every scene he’s in benefits greatly from his presence. Swedish born Rapace as Doctor Elisabeth Shaw, currently doing Hollywood rounds off the back of her success as the original Lisbeth Salander (in the Dragon Tattoo trilogy) has managed to carve a credible performance here despite some ropey dialogue and the woeful lack of chemistry with her on-

screen lover (Logan Marshall-Green). There are some decent moments of horror and tension. There are also planet-sized plot holes and moments of ham-fisted stupidity. With the recent announcement that Ridley is returning to that other sci-fi masterpiece of his, Blade Runner, there’s a sense that in his twilight years he’s riding the coattails of his past successes. On this evidence he runs the risk of spinning his cinematic gold into straw. In a film that does such a poor job of asking the big questions, we’re left not caring about the answers.

ATIN AMERICA is a region of the world in rapid transition, following the fall of many dictatorial regimes in the 1980s and the ensuing wave of democratisation. This has resulted in a blossoming film culture, which both looks

back to the periods of dictatorship, examining problems such as poverty, violence and drugs – but also addresses new, more universal themes. So join us and embark on a cinematic journey through the colourful and diverse continent by attending the Latin American Film Festival 2012 at Cinemateket. Of course, there is no such thing as a single Latin American film culture – it’s home to a rich and highly diverse range of film cultures. But despite their diversity, a common feature of all the films is the willingness to discuss culture and social change. Each participating country –

Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Mexico, Cuba, Chili and Venezuela – has its own night, consisting of a film screening, after which there will be wine and tapas, generously provided by the respective embassies. The Chilean biopic film Teresa and the Venezuelan selection Venezzia describe love made impossible by social barriers. The Brazilian film, A Dog’s Will, and the Argentinian selection, A Chinese Take-Away, take a somewhat humorous view on reality, while Ella is a colourful portrait of Cuban women. The Mexican film Spiral shows how migration affects the ones left behind. Bolivia kicks off the festival

with Voices from Bolivia, which describes the contrasts between quiet life in a mountain village and the lively turmoil that emerges when people come from far and near to attend the annual market fair. Berlinske rated the film with five out of six starts and described it as “a fine piece of documentary”. Check Cinemateket’s website for the full programme. Tickets are also available on their website.

1- 7 June 2012

New this Week Salmon Fishing in the Yemen (7) Dir: Lasse Hallström; UK dramedy, 2011, 107 mins; Ewan McGregor, Emily Blunt, Kristin Scott Thomas It’s a movie about the Middle East without the violent strife. The premise centres on the vanity project of a charismatic and wealthy Yemeni sheikh to transplant his beloved hobby of salmon fishing to his desert country as a way of bringing people together. They don’t really make movies like Salmon Fishing in the Yemen anymore, but when they did in the 90s, it was Hallström who made them, and in that way the movie feels like a pleasant throwback. MH

Book Your Tickets Shame (15) Dir: Steve McQueen; UK drama, 2011, 101 mins; Michael, Carey Mulligan, Nicole Beharie Shame is a claustrophobic drama of intensity and urgency. It will make any recent films seem trivial and tame, a strange and unique beast indeed. It’s mature drama, bravely tackling complicated subject matter for those looking to experience something different. It’s original, visceral and disquieting - in the way only cinema can be. MW

The Avengers (11) Dir: John Whedon; US action sci-fi, 2012, 142 mins;

Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston The Avengers is for Marvel what Dark Night was for DC Whedon has scored the crowning achievement for Marvel Studio’s interconnected universe. MW

Avoid Like the Plague What to Expect When You’re Expecting (11) Dir: Gary Ross; US sci-fi, 2012, 142 mins; Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson Prepare to keep your expectations low for the latest Hollywood esemble rom com, What to Expect When You’re Expecting. For a film that claims to show how unpredictable life can be, the script is horribly predictable. ED

The Vow (11) Dir: Michael Sucsy; US drama, 2012, 104 mins; Rachel McAdams, Channing Tatum, Sam Neill A car accident puts Paige in a coma, and when she wakes up with severe memory loss, her husband Leo works to win her heart again. Basically, if you’re a romantic drama type, you’ll love this movie. Also, it seems like the only purpose of films like The Vow are to make the rest of us guys look bad. MH

There is absolutely nothing dark about this film and the only thing lurking in the shadow is a huge amount of wasted potential. A man-made monster may well be a feature retained from the original series, however in this case the man is Burton and the monster is Dark Shadows. AS

Iron Sky (15) Dir: Timo Vuorensolas; Fin/ Aus/Ger action/com, 2012, 93 mins; Julia Dietze, Götz Otto, Christopher Kirby, Peta Sergeant Iron Sky has proved that the studio system has its uses; this script would likely have seen a drafts before getting greenlit. As it is, Vuorensolas goosestepped out of obsecurity and right into the cine-scheisse. Not to knock the monumental achievement of assembling this huge production, but just because you can, doesn’t necessarily mean you should. MW

Also Playing American Pie (7) Dir: Jon Hurwitz; US comedy, 2012, 110 mins; Jason Biggs, Alyson Hannigan, Seann William Scott The last serving of pie may not be the best, but it certainly is tasty in its own right and a worthy clinger to a fantastic (in a manner of speaking) series of films. KE

Dark Shadows (11) Dir: Gary Ross; US sci-fi, 2012, 142 mins; Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth

We Need to Talk About Kevin (7) Dir: Lynne Ramsay; UK, US drama, 2011, 112 mins; Tilda Swinton, John C Reilly, Ezra Miller Kevin’s mother struggles to love her strange child, despite the increasingly vicious things he says and does as he grows up. But Kevin is just getting started, and his final act will be beyond anything anyone imagined. It’s not an easy story to tell, but the filmmakers do it well. MH

Chronicle (15) Dir: Josh Trank; US sci-fi action, 2012, 83 mins; Dane DeHaan, Michael B Jordan, Michael Kelly, Alex Russell Three high school students make an incredible discovery, giving them superpowers. As they learn to control their abilities and use them to their advantage, their lives start to spin out of control, and their darker sides begin to take over. This film puts a fresh spin on the superhero origin story, a tale Hollywood spins again and again. MH

The Cabin in the Woods (15) Dir: Drew Goddards; US horror, 2012, 95 mins; Richard Jenkins, Bradley Whitford, Jesse Williams Unlike some horror movies that are considered comedic because the films are so bad, The Cabin... is funny and thoughtprovoking by design. Finally, a horror movie that everyone can, and should see. KE

The Dictator (11)

The Hunger Games (11)

Dir: Larry Charles; US comedy 2012, 83 mins; Sacha Baron Cohen, Anna Faris, Ben Kingsley, John C Reilly Cohen’s fans will recall the tepid disappointment of Ali G: Indahouse. The Dictator shares the fiction approach of that film and confirms the superiority of Cohen’s fiction/documentery hybrids over these pure fictions. Genuinely funny moments are too few, and almost all of those aren’t politicised. MW

Dir: Gary Ross; US sci-fi, 2012, 142 mins; Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson Ross has successfully dissected and expanded the book and produced something that works as a film – so long as you’re not too precious about its origins. MH

The Raven (15) Dir: James McTeigue; US thriller, 2012, 111 mins; John Cusack, Luke Evans, Alice Eve, Brendan Gleeson Giving his macabre style of writing, Edgar Ellan Poe probably would have liked the idea that made him turn in his grave, but even he would have drawn the line at the film The Raven. 111 minutes watching a raven perched on window sill would offer more thrills. JOS

The Artist (3) Dir: Michel Hazanavicius; Fra/Bel dramedy, 2011, 100 mins; Jean Dujardin, Bernice Bejo, John Goodman, James Cromwell It’s difficult to see why this film is being championed so highly. Many will defend it by claiming that detractors are put off by a lack of colour, dialogue, explosions and other contemporary mainstays. But really their efforts would be better spent lauding Chaplin’s Modern Times or Murnau’s Sunrise. MW

Men in Black III (11) Dir: Barry Sonnenfeld; US action, 2012, 105 mins; Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones, Josh Brolin, Jemaine Clement It’s a light, fun sci-fiadventure, with perhaps a slightly darker overture than the previous films, MiB3 is worth seeing in a theatre – if for nothing else the roar of the Apollo rocket that rumbles your chest, and the 3D which is one of the better that I have encountered. KE

The Iron Lady (3) Dir: Phyllida Lloyed; UK/ Fra drama, 2012, 105 mins; Meryl Streep, Jim Broadbent, Olivia Colman, Richard E Grant From the first frame there’s a growing awareness that our perceptions of this woman are being gently and skilfully manipulated by director Phyllida Lloyd and screenwriter Abi Morgan, so much so that regardless of your political persuasion you’d have to be resolutely stubborn or emotionally retarded in failing to be moved by this biopic. Nevertheless, Margaret Thatcher is full blooded; she lives and breathes before your eyes. MW

ARE MY EYES deceiving me? David Jason, the British TV actor who could do no wrong, who as Del Boy, Pop Larkin and Frost has had hit after hit after hit … a measly 3.4 on IMDB. Say it can’t be true. Well, if you believe the reviewers, then The Royal Bodyguard (BBC Ent, Thu 22:00), a sitcom about an incompetent placed in charge of the queen of England’s security matters, is complete codswallop. But, and this is a big but, most of the complaints seem to be coming from people who thought Johnny English was brilliant. Staying in Britain, and a safer bet all round (7-8 on IMDB), are these four progammes. Call the Midwife (SV1, Sun 21:00), in Britain at least, is even more popular than Downton Abbey. Set in the 1950s, it’s an

authentic looking costume drama you can really lose yourself in. The Song of Lunch (SV1, Sun 17:05), with Alan Rickman and Emma Thompson, recounts how ex-lovers meet for lunch entirely in verse. Your enjoyment rests on how pretentious you like your poetry. United is the tale of the Munich Air Disaster. It’s vivid, moving and compellingly recreated, bringing home the full extent of the tragedy, with a standout performance by David Tennant. And staying with sport, Twenty Twelve (BBC Ent, Thu 22:30) is a mockumentary-style sitcom about the organisation of the 2012 Olympics, which some critics thought was too mild a satire. Meanwhile, over the pond, The Finder (TV3, Tue 21:00) is an average psychic investigator crime series;

Terra Nova (TV2 Zulu, Sat 20:00) is a mediocre ‘we’ve ended up in prehistoric Earth’ romp; and Camelot (TV3, Sat 21:00) is a Game of Thrones wannabe with poor casting. Arthur’s too girly and Merlin (Joseph Fiennes) too hammy – a shame as Eva Green excels as Morgan. Elsewhere, learn more about the greeting waiting for football fans SV1, Sun 23:45 United in Panorama: Euro 2012: Stadiums Of Hate (BBC World, Sun 13:30 & 19:30); relive the epic concert Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars (DRK, Tue 22:25); pay homage to The Queen’s Jubilee (BBC Ent, Sun 14:30, Mon 20:30 & Tue 10:15); and tune in for The Life & Times of Tim (DR2, Sat 23:45), a US animation series similar to Family Guy.
