THEY ALWAYS SAY after major football tournaments (see G3 for our guide to the best places to watch Euro 2012) that the winning team will never need to buy a drink in their homeland again. Not quite sure that’s still the case in Greece. Then again, one country’s misery is another’s (Turkish) delight. Ah, European rivalries. Don’t you just love them? And they don’t come much fiercer than the one between the Netherlands and Germany (see G20 for our sports pick this week). Apparently, when I’ve asked in the past, it’s because Dutch caravaners hold up impatient German drivers on the autobahns … nothing to do with the occupation, then. Now, normally I abhor spitting. And I’m not a great fan of men whose appearance instantly reminds me of a 1970s porn film. But the two came together in perfect sym-
metry at the 1990 World Cup when adult movie star/brilliant footballer Frank Rijkaard decided that Rudi Völler’s mullet was running low on moisture. There was something magical about those exchanges. They were bizarre, unexpected and of the highest theatre, and following their early dismissal, the rest of the game was one of the best I’ve ever seen. But nothing compares to the excitement of watching your own team fighting for their survival. For me, ‘hugging strangers’ is the very definition of a game that has everything (they tend to be 2-2 draws that end with England losing), when even the reptiles among us go all tactile. In 1998, I held a grown man in my arms for ten minutes. We didn’t exchange a word, or even look at one another, but we were bound together in unison: we moved up and down, we shrieked and we groaned, with ecstasy and with agony, and we came … so close. But in the end, Argentina won on penalties. I never did catch his name, but another had won my heart that night: Michael Owen. Fourteen years on, I’m getting ready to go through it all again.

Still Going WRONG
Lille Carl, Dansescenen, 20 Pasteursvej, 1778 Cph V; starts Thu (14 June), ends 23 June, daily performances except Sun at 20:00; tickets 60-130kr; duration 70 minutes; www.dansehallerne.dk, www.dadadans.dk IF LIFE, as Samuel Butler said, is like playing a violin in public and learning the instrument as one goes on, then who can blame anybody for making mistakes? In fact, everybody makes them so often that it seems defeatist to call them that: mistakes. Call them “lessons to be learned” instead, the benign Mark Twain suggested. By all means, one of his contemporaries advised, but forget them as soon as you can! Whoever said “errare humanum est” seems to have known what they were talking about. It is often observed nowadays that we are living at a time when a perfect body, perfect friends, a perfect job and job title – a perfect life really – are seen as the only recipe for human happiness. After centuries of philosophical dispute over the problem, our culture has finally labelled it comprehensibly: perfection, pure and simple. Why settle for less? Why be happy, even for a second, when something is off or flawed or can be regretted and fretted over? Someone’s got to have standards ... however insufferable our mess-ups suddenly seem when bathed in perfection’s unforgiving light. The founder of Dadadans, choreographer Helle Bach, has long pondered these timeless paradoxes of human self-evaluation, self-consciousness and self-centeredness. The metaphysics of mistakes and triumphs has represented to her a phenomenon that only art could effectively command and elucidate. What roles do success and failure really play in the lives of people like you and me, you ask? Well, bring in the dancers, have them bring preparation to opportunity and, as the poet said, there’s a recipe for success. Before any more talk of dancers, though, it should be mentioned that Helle Bach has found it meaningful that the person we can all thank for being able to listen to musical records and living in lighted flats, Thomas Edison, once remarked: “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” Ah, the scientist’s logic and precision! It should also be mentioned that her artistic interest is known to gravitate toward the stories our bodies tell and what they unwittingly reveal about ‘the human condition’. Bach’s choreographic work is described as pointing – with originality and by eliciting laughter as well as tears – to the banal realities of life and to its poetic beauty. The work is inventive and unpredictable, full of humour and rhythm, and contains references to contemporary dance and the French cabaret tradition. Since 2005 she
Performance Tivoli Cabaret
Tivoli, Vesterbrogade 3, Cph V; ends Sep 22; performances Tue-Thu 20:00, Thu-Sat 20:30; Tickets: 315-415kr; duration: 180 mins, www.tivolicabaret.dk Complete with little round tables and singers who double as waiting staff, Cabaret at Tivoli is an evening of light-hearted kitsch entertainment. Incorporating stand-up comedy, magic, drag queens, sketches, opera and music medleys, this will be a fun variety show, whether you take advantage of the free bar or not. Most of the acts are in Danish, but the cheesy pop hits are in a language everyone can understand. EB
Still going wrong: we think nobody’s noticed but our shadows know the truth
has reflected an idiosyncratic fascination with modern technology: particularly the sort dealing with virtual contact between people. The stage does something to a person, that’s clear; a kind of existential amplification, not unrelated to the presence of the audience, is effected. But what happens when a person is only virtually on stage? That’s for another preview and another production to explore. Back to those mistakes ... In Still Going WRONG, five top-notch international dancers are instinctively striving for that aforementioned sense of perfection: programmed to want it, destined to fall short of it. They appear before us a blushing and blundering crowd capable of nothing but gaffes, pratfalls, and other involuntary acts of self-humiliation. Yet somewhere between the disappointment and embarrassment they suffer, life’s unexpected, vital, and essentially human quality is found: a blessing in disguise. This ties in nicely with another quote that has been in the back of Dadadans’s collective
Albert Herring
Gamle Scene, Kongens Nytorv 9, Cph K; Fri 20:00; Tickets: 95-495kr; 170 mins; sung in English with Danish supertitles; www.kglteater.dk English composer Benjamin Britten didn’t like snobs, and Albert Herring is one example of this penchant. Composed in 1946-47, it’s a chamber opera in three acts exploring society’s reaction to a strange individual, a shy bachelor who is crowned the King of May an honour normally bestowed on women. It’s hilarious and reminiscent of English opera’s origins as jigs performed at the end of plays at court. And who doesn’t like a good ol’ jig? EB
mind: success builds character, failure reveals it. Therein, perhaps, lies a lesson worth experiencing, especially if human happiness has been misrepresented as an ideal and unattainable absolute; in short, as perfection. Dadadans’s production, which will of course be overflowing with things going wrong, has been informed by real people’s real mistakes. Over the course of a full year, Dadadans has collected quotes, thoughts and tales from Danes for whom the memory of some personal mistake was presumably so awkward and haunting that sharing and confessing it seemed an appealing move. Go to Dadadans’ website, find the ‘WRONG blog’, and prepare for the show by reading some of these confessions. They range from the toe-curling to the innocent, but like Still Going WRONG, they are truer to real life than art often dares to be.

InOut | THE CPH POST ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE
8 - 14 June 2012 Euro 2012 bar guide
Various venues in Cph; starts Friday, ends July 1 IT’S BEEN A long four-year wait, but finally the time has come for the next UEFA European Championship. Hosted by Poland and Ukraine, this year’s tournament is set to be bigger and better than ever or at least that’s what they always say. Whilst many of us would probably love to be able to see the games in person, most of us will have to settle for watching it from here, but that doesn’t mean we can’t get out and support our teams. Plenty of pubs and bars around Copenhagen are showing the games and some are even offering great drink and food specials.
Italian Immersion
Cafe Sporten, Falkoner Alle 54, Frederiksberg. While Cafe Sporten may not initially strike you as a place fit for the Italians, this small Thai restaurant is a well-known spot to head to if you are looking to support Italy. The Italian cultural organisation, Serate Italiane, often gathers their troops here and this place has played home to many a happy (2006) and disappointed (2002) Italian gathering over the years.
Royal summer ballet

Various cities around Denmark; starts Sun, Sun-Thu at 19:00 and Fri-Sat at 15:00; free adm; www.kglteater.dk Once again it is time to pull out your picnic rug and enjoy some ballet and modern dance in the open air. The Danish Royal Ballet is paying homage to the summer months with a delightful performance being toured around seven cities. It’s the seventh time the company has done a summer show of this kind. The programme opens on Sunday in Odense and concludes in Horsens on June 17. See the website for details. EB
Blå
Egg on England
Sankt Nikolai Restaurant & British Pub, Nikolajgade 18, Cph K Sankt Nikolai is a great lunch restaurant, come traditional English pub at nightfall. This newish bar may be hidden away down a small cobbled side-street, but the true English fans will surely be able to find it. During Monday’s opening game against France (18:00) a special ‘Sunday roast’ of Roast beef and Yorkshire pudding will be served (the irony of this choice will not be lost on the French), plus a pint of cask ale, for just 199 kroner. Pre-booking is essential. “And every time England score, we’ll knock five kroner off the price of a pint,” promises pub landlord Martin Popplewell. “Let’s just hope they don’t win 6-0.” Martin, however, remains optimistic England will do well. “We’re going to win it of course,” he says, adding with just the smallest amount of jest: “This time more than any other time.” This is a great venue for watching the games, even if your allegiance doesn’t lie with England.
Diehard Dutch
The Globe, Nørregade 43-45, Cph K One of Copenhagen’s favourite watering holes, The Globe, will be going Dutch during the tournament. Landlord Brian has previously decked the whole pub out in orange to welcome Holland’s fans

and this year promises to be no different. The Globe is the home of the city’s Dutch society, who meets for regular drinks, and sources from the pub say that it’s bound to be packed this year every time the Netherlands plays. To help get Dutch supporters in the mood, there will be Grolsch drink specials and plenty of bitterballen, as well as other regular specials throughout the tournament period. While the Dutch may well be taking over The Globe, this cosy pub is of course Irish so it’s also a great place to catch their matches and others (including the English).

The Cardigans knitted back together The Cardigans

fter a few years of working on solo projects, the Swedish tongue-in-cheek band ,with music as sweet as candyfloss, is knitted back together. They’re one of the biggest thing to come out of Sweden since, uhm, ABBA. Now on their sixth album,
the band is still one of the country’s biggest music-industry exports. They have proven that the only way for a record company to transform a local act into an international one is to give it time to evolve and develop. When you hear their music, you wouldn’t believe the band was formed by two heavy metal fanatics. Guitarist Peter Svensson and bassist Magnus Sveningsson were part of a hardcore group in the town of Jönköping. The two later grew tired of metal and decided to form a pop band with vocalist Nina Persson – an
art-school friend who had never sung professionally. Later, keyboard player Lars-Olof Johansson and drummer Bengt Lagerberg also joined the group. It’s more than 15 years since the band’s single ‘Lovefool’ turned Persson into an international rock star. While their debut album, Emmerdale (1994), gave them a solid base in their home country and some success abroad – especially in Japan, where they seem to enjoy cheesy music – it wasn’t until their second album, Life (1995), that they earned international recognition.
It took Persson two albums to gain the confidence to write the lyrics for the band. ‘Lovefool’ was her first song, written in an airport lounge. “At the time it sounded more like a slow bossa nova,” she recalls in British newspaper The Guardian. “Often it’s the songs that come to you quickly and easily that become the biggest.” Persson speculated in American music magazine Option that even in their head-banging days, they were better suited to pop. “Even when they were playing angry music, I don’t think they
were very angry,” she said. “We were all instantly comfortable making Cardigans music.” Now, Persson says: “We make happy music, but it’s not silly.” Persson told The Guardian she finds song-writing an anxious experience, as she is very self-critical during the process, and therefore works very slowly. On the question of whether she thinks being a Swede writing in English is a disadvantage, she answered: “It’s as if it’s my right to be wrong on purpose, and that makes the lyrics different. I’m writing in English with a
Swedish brain.” After a long break, the band has decided to go on tour again. They decided to take it easy though, with only seven gigs planned for this year, including Friday’s stop at Tivoli. “Touring is great fun for three weeks, and you look forward to it. But after that it’s really tough,” Persson told The Guardian. “You know you have to, but it feels like you’re wasting time.” Mike Hofman

Jagwa Music
Global; 21:00; 90kr Bringing some of world music’s most exciting stars to town, Global is repeatedly churning out interesting and refreshing concerts. Jagwa Music present their audience with fiery beats all the way from their native Tanzania. With just a handheld Casio keyboard, a pair of drums, several flutes, and a stool that acts as a percussion instrument, their dynamic live concerts - that a few may recall from last year’s Roskilde Festival – really do set the room on fire. Touring in support of their debut record Bongo Hotheads (2012), they will put on one of the most exciting live shows of the summer.
Emil Thiim Berner Hansen
KB18; 21:00; 120kr The Californian-born, dreadlocked musical mystic is one of today’s most intriguing touring artists. A yoga tutor by trade who is currently based in Las Vegas, he’s worked alongside other eccentric music-makers, including the energetic Gaslamp Killer, the bedazzling Flying Lotus and the rap supergroup Masters of the Universe. Tonight he’ll appear solo, performing his lo-fi class of ‘outsider’ hip-hop, redrawing the boundaries of what constitutes hip-hop, funk and alternative with his spiritually-driven style.

t doesn’t get any more Distorted than this. Four days after it all started, Copenhagen’s craziest cavalcade came to an abrupt end. Those
who partook in the proceedings will no doubt have plenty of smiles and positive recollections that they will be talking about for a while to come. Here’s a quick glance through the rear view mirror at some of the best moments of Distortion 2012. Lukas Graham
Nemoland; 18:00; Free Adm Graham is a Danish-Irish folk singer – following in his father’s footsteps who also performed as a folk singer – whose music has cropped up on both sides of the pond. Signed to one of Denmark’s largest independent labels, Copenhagen Records, his attractive, summer-sounding ballads have led to widespread popularity in his native Denmark, with his single ‘Drunk in the Morning’ reaching high in the charts. Made for Sunday lounging, Graham’s live set will be a popular choice for many looking to end their weekend on a high note in Christiania. Get their early to secure a good spot. Essential Mix, sprung a surprise at this year’s festival by playing at Vor Frue Plads a mere three days before his appearance at the Final Party. Lulu Rouge and Rune RK were on warm-up duties, but ultimately the show was all about Pete. To say that his performance was epic would be a gross understatement. Trentemøller in Nørrebro Thursday May 31 Anders Trentemøller has the rare privilege of being Denmark’s best DJ, whilst simultaneously being rather anonymous in Copenhagen. One may well have easily walked by him playing a laissez-faire set in the heart of Nørrebro on Thursday: a rare blend of electronica laced with occasional outbursts of rock and indie. This was all before his more publicised show
Sam Sparro
Lille Vega; 21:00; 175kr Perhaps best known for his dancefloor-disco tune, ‘Black & Gold’, the Australian-born vocalist and producer rose to fame in the UK in 2008. Making use of his gospel-inspired vocals and penchant for catchy disco beats, his unique hybrid of R&B, funk and electro has led to him becoming the darling of a new generation of R&B stars. With a new record, Return to Paradise, due for release later this year on the prestigious record label Island Records, Sparro is sure to draw in a decent crowd for his Copenhagen date.
at the Skatepark the day after, which was no less than anyone would have expected. Mike Skinner at Lastbilscenen Friday June 1 Brummie Mike Skinner, a man who has managed to shine in his performances in Denmark year after year, was on hand to chase away the rain on Friday night. Performing to a mix of hefty dubstep and drum ‘n’ bass, Skinner was at his usual best and not even a heavy downpour could deter the crowd from turning out in heavy numbers. Distortion Rave S-train, Friday June 1 Imagine an S-train packed to the brim with hordes of merrymakers all bouncing to the sound of heavy beats and blazing bass lines. Distortion’s cherry on the cake this year was one such-like concoction: a circus that ended up being taken over by a marching band who decided they’d waltz in on Mike Sheridan’s set and steal the show.

OFF!
Loppen; 21:00; 140kr Led by Keith Morris, the former frontman of pioneering post-punk rock group Black Flag and the Circle Jerks, the hardcore Los Angeles outfit have become the new face of Vice Records. In OFF!, Morris is joined by former members of Burning Brides, Redd Kross and Rocket from the Crypt. With moody guitar, rusty production quality and a nonchalant stage presence, OFF! are an anti-establishment punk band, with more style than their studded jacket and gelled hair modern counterparts. Definitely worth seeing for those with a more alternative taste in music.
Nightlife Surgeon
Culture Box; Fri 23:00; 70kr Breaking onto the UK techno scene in the mid-‘90s, Anthony Child (aka Surgeon) launched his career in the fierce battling ground that is London. Originally thought of as a precursor, or rather a bi-product of rave music that dominated the English club scene in the ‘90s, he made a name for himself with his cinematic tunes – drawing inspiration from the likes of David Lynch, William S Burroughs and Mike Leigh – and their characteristically enchanting beats that served to elevate the status of techno.
Barbara Moleko & Julie Groove & Emil Lange & Waqar & Mission Bassment
Rust; Fri 23:00; 60kr Moleko is the new buzz word on the national pop scene. She makes the Danish language sound unusually seductive, sleek and sexy in her light-hearted, hip hop-tinged tunes. Moleko will also be joined by Julie Groove, another emerging star based in Copenhagen
Bear in Heaven
Lille Vega; 19:00; 100kr Initially starting out in the late ‘90s, the New York-based progpop trio have been rendering their mellow brand for almost 15 years. With traces of myriad influences from the ‘80s and ‘90s, they’ve carved out a timeless, soothingly mellow brand of ambient rock that has been hailed by some of the biggest music publications in America, including the authoritative voice of Pitchfork. Original, contemporary and graceful, the trio fit the bill.

With a host of resident DJs pitching in, Rust’s three floors will be packed full of the local crowd. Both the most established and largest night-club in the Nørrebro part of town, punters out for the night needn’t look any further.
Night Jazz: Le Funk Mystique
Culture Box; Fri 23:00; 70kr This is one of the side-projects of Niclas Knudsen, the phenomenally experimental frontman of the funk group Ibrahim Electric. His curious blend of ‘80s disco and organic afro-beat includes a French-flavoured, timeless jazz blend. Le Funk Mystique are destined to intrigue Copenhagen with their eccentric approach towards music-making in much the same way as Ibrahim Electric, who have gone on to perform sold-out shows across the country. Refreshingly inventive, Knudsen continues to be one of the most innovative artists working the Copenhagen music scene. Daniel van der Noon

MUSEUMS CORNER BY ASLØG ANDERSEN, STUDENT AT RUCL
Mobile apps for museums: explore with your smartphone SMARTPHONES are ingenious. They can be used for much more than just shooting temperamental cartoon birds. The author of this article – who uses an ancient cell phone with buttons on a day-to-day basis – had the pleasure of discovering the fact when she went on a quest to find Danish and foreign apps for museums and how these can be beneficial for your museum experience. What is a museum app? The first museum apps surfaced abroad in 2009 and the idea has captured Denmark too, as The National Gallery of Denmark and The National Museum of Denmark have recently developed applications that can broaden your museum experience. With an app you can explore the museums at home or on the go. You can take your smartphone along to the museum as well and experience the exhibition in a whole different light with the app. Bring the frescos back to life The frescos in the Danish churches contain an abundance of spectacular, eerie and beautiful narratives, but can seem inaccessible. Not anymore! With the National Museum of Denmark’s app, ‘The ear in the wall’, the stories are being revoked and brought to life and the ancient ornamentations from the Middle Age and the Renaissance no longer seem so far away and untouchable. The app is a guide to the best frescos in Denmark – at 136

churches across the country – and contains three different narratives for each church. First and foremost, you are presented with different data concerning the individual church and its frescos. Subsequently you can – while moving around the said church – listen to selected stories about the figurines on the walls. The narratives are of appropriate length and are recorded by professional actors, giving you a unique audio experience. Behind Hammershøi The National Gallery of Denmark has placed posters depicting Hammershøi’s famed ‘Stand-ing, naked woman’ around Copenhagen, but without the woman. When you have downloaded the museum’s app and hold your smart phone in front of the poster, the woman will come walking into the picture! Afterwards you can take a picture of yourself and the woman together in the same space. The author found this amusing when she tried it out with the iPod she borrowed from the ticket sales counter at the museum. The Hammershøi app offers several interesting moments. Warm up with a film about the artist and explore the exhibition with your smartphone. In the app’s gallery you can find six works by Hammershøi that lead you to a film recorded at the very places where the artist painted the pictures. A travel letter written by either Vilhelm or Ida Hammershøi is being read aloud, and the past is linked to the present. Should you be interested in what happens behind the scenes, your app will tell you that the

Amir Asor, an Israeli who has devised a teaching method using Lego to help children who struggle to learn conventionally, will speak at the festival on Sunday between 10:00 and 11:00. Afterwards he will spend the day at the Taste of Israel stall in the synagogue courtyard, where visitors can meet him. If your living room is in need of new art, pick up a new print to hang on your walls. Tal R, one of Denmark’s most celebrated artists, has designed a woodcut for the festival, and signed and numbered prints will be on sale. At the concert in the synagogue on Sunday, you’ll have the opportunity to watch seven artists perform in seven hours. From choral music to opera and from klezmer to jazz and blues, the concert will cover a wide spectrum of genres performed by renowned Jewish musicians including Thomas Peter Koppel and Benni Chawes. The festival is the product of cooperation between Jewish organisations, artists and countless volunteers in Copenhagen. SM

IN RECENT WEEKS, Copenhagen’s Parken stadium has been the stage for the backfiring of FC København’s damp squib of a football season, but on Saturday, the national arena will be firing on all cylinders as the stadium is transformed into a cauldron of excitement with the addition of a 275-metre dirt track. Speedway is accelerating into town in the shape of the FIM Dansk Metal Speedway Grand Prix, with 16 of the world’s top riders going head to head over 23 rip-roaring heats. Racing over 20 breathtaking four-man heats, the daredevil competitors have five races to accumulate as many points as possible: three for a win, two for the runner-up, one for third and no points for last place. A perfect 15 will see you into for the semi-finals - the 23rd heat being the grand finale. Never been to speedway? Don’t worry, it’s simple to follow. Four riders keep turning left over four laps of an oval track and each race is over in less than a minute. This might sound easy, but not for the riders. They race 500 cc single-geared machines with no brakes, releasing the clutch to start before speeding around corners, up to 90 mph, at impossibly precipitous angles. Watching a speedway racer rocket sideways around the oval track is described by enthusiasts as poetry in motion. It’s hectic, enthralling, dangerous and an excellent spectator sport. Back in the 1970s, speedway was
close to being Denmark’s national sport with the legendary Ole Olsen thrice victorious in the world championships. His immense popularity led to the construction of the Vojens Speedway Centre, which was the home of the Danish Speedway Grand Prix from 1995 to 2002, after which the event sped its way to the larger Parken stadium. This year marks the tenth anniversary of the event in the Danish capital and the fifth event of a globetrotting series that started with a first lap in New Zealand back in March and is set to cross the finishing line in Poland come October with the crowning of a new champion. So, who are the main men in Copenhagen? The defending world speedway champion, the 42 year-old American Greg ‘Herbie’ Hancock, has established himself as the ironman of the sport and proved that, in speedway, age is no barrier to success. With two wins, in 1997 and 2011, under his belt, the veteran Hancock is a good bet to be there or thereabouts when it comes to podium places. If anyone is going to bring home the bacon, it has got to be three-time world speedway champion Nicki Pedersen. Pedersen showed excellent form in the recent Gothenburg Grand Prix with 14 out of a possible 15 points in the heats, but that came to an abrupt end in the semi-finals when he incurred the wrath of the Swedes by controversially bringing down Thomas Jonasson on a thrilling final turn. A return to the outstanding form of 2007 and 2008 would see Parken stadium erupt with joy. Pedersen’s arch rival over recent years has been the impressively relentless Aussie, Jason Crump. Mr Consistent, Crump has not been outside a top

four placing over the last 12 years, with three wins and five runner-up places. Speedway courses through his veins thanks to his father Phil Crump, who came third in the 1976 world championship. Last year’s winner in Denmark, Tomasz Gollob, has one championship to his name (2010). A leading member of the mighty Polish speedway team, Gollob has fully recovered from a spectacular crash in Sweden and will be hoping to be in pole position by the end of the night. Keep an eye out for the young Danish sensation Michael Jepsen Jensen, who has received a wild card. Some 29,000 revved-up spectators will be hoping he has a fairytale grand prix debut. With five Danes on the starting line, there is a good chance of a home victory that would make the enjoyment of the post-race fireworks even sweeter. Whether you are in the VIP methanol club with the chequered flag in close view, or high up in the stands watching the wheels dance in the dirt, this is a fast and furious Saturday night that you won’t forget in a hurry. Dark Chocolate Chip Comfort Cookies
eatingindenmark.blogspot.org
Adapted from www.bakerella.com
BY STACI MENARD
WHEN LIFE has got me down, I inevitably find comfort in the kitchen. Even when things are going well, I love to get lost in a new recipe, preferably one that involves chocolate. The world began to look a little bit brighter the day I discovered Dark Chocolate Chip Comfort Cookies. I mean, the name pretty much says it all. What’s more, they contain a lovely secret that the name belies: peanut butter. And if you are one of those selective European creatures who scoffs at the stuff (I live with one), I ensure you’ll never know it’s there. I gauge a recipe’s success
by how often I go back to it. I’ve turned out at least a half dozen batches of these cookies in the last few months alone. Baked right, you will be awarded with the most perfect cookie texture imaginable: slightly crunchy on the edges and ever-so-delicately gooey on the inside. They’re akin to a brownie in that sense. Just make sure you keep an eye on the oven and test them at the eight minute mark. You’re looking for a top that is deep, dark brown but still somewhat shiny and very soft to the touch. Avoid a top that is hard, cracked, and dry. All you’ll end up with is tough little hockey pucks.

Restaurant Kiin Kiin Guldbergsgade 21, Cph N; 3535 7535; four-course menu 450kr, seven-course 775kr (with wine menu 1450kr); www.kiin.dk There are only two Thai restaurants in the whole world that have been awarded a Michelin star. One of them is in London, the other one is Kiin Kiin, which you’ll find in the heart of Nørrebro. And it’s well deserved. Kiin Kiin isn’t just a restaurant, it’s an experience, a place where every little detail is thought through. PDR Reinwald’s Farvergade 15, 1463 Cph K; open Mon-Sat 14:00-24:00 (kitchen closes at 22:00); 3391 8289; five-course menu with wine 850kr, other dishes 75215kr; www.reinwalds.dk Serving lunch and dinner, a director’s script-length of choices confronts you at Reinwald’s. It’s a who’s who of classic French and French-inspired Danish dishes as well as a monthly set menu. Any chef would be proud of this. SC 1. th. Herluf Gade 9, Cph K; 3393 5770, 1th@1th.dk; 1,250kr per person; www.1th.dk 1. th. is a gourmet restaurant with a twist. Tucked away behind a hard-to-find door on the first floor to the right of a typical Copenhagen apartment, the restaurant is based around the concept of the dinner party with guests stepping into what appears to be a private apartment and then being utterly spoilt by their hosts. The monthly set menu costs 1,250kr and has a whopping ten courses, and you can tell them in advance of any food quirks you might have and they will personalise the menu for you. Terrific food, friendly and attentive service and a unique setting. CS
Cap Horn Nyhavn 21, Cph K; open Mon-Fri 10:00-00:00, Sat-Sun 09:00-00:00; 3312 8504; starters from 99kr, main courses from 139kr, desserts from 39kr; see www.caphorn.dk for special events Nyhavn, the old harbour, is an idyllic area of magic and hygge what the Danes like to say when referring to anything that is cosy, charming, or delightful: all qualities Cap Horn has in abundance. Its simple menu boasts a fine selection of organic, homemade Danish fare, with a touch of seasonal influence. There were two highlights: the veal, pumpkin, mushrooms and potatoes with amazing truffle sauce (a “best ever veal experience”) and the chocolate cake (“Oh My God”), which was possibly the best chocolate cake ever! MM BioMio Halmtorvet 19, 1700 Cph V; open daily 12:00-24:00 (later Fri and Sat), kitchen open 12:00-22:00; 3331 2000; starters 75kr, mains 135kr; www. biomio.dk Located in an old warehouse next to trendy Kødbyen, Bio Mio is certainly unusual for conservative Copenhagen. It’s stylish without being pretentious, fast enough that you don’t go crazy waiting for food, and loud enough that you can make a racket without anyone raising an eyebrow. JH SushiTreat Fox Jarmers Plads 3, Cph V; open Mon-Thu 16:30-22:00, Fri-Sat 16:30-24:00 with Club Treat from 22:00-02:00; 3338 7030 The SushiTreat restaurant at the Hotel Fox serves the best California-style sushi in the city, offers an impressive drinks and wine card, and has a completely unique atmosphere on Friday and Saturday nights when you can order sushi until 2am while listening to some of the city’s best DJs . KRG Saga Queen Havnegade 31, Cph K (near Nyhavn); sails twice Thu-Sat at 13:00 (lunch ) & 19:00 (dinner); reservations 4675 6460 & info@sagaqueen.dk; www. sagaqueen.dk The city’s only restaurant cruise ship, the Saga Queen offers a two-hour lunch cruise and a three-hour dinner cruise. Every table has a wonderful window view, and there’s a choice of set menus. Sometimes a meal can feel like an eternity, but here the time passed by quickly and pleasurably as we enjoyed a feast for both our eyes and our very satisfied stomachs. peanut butter until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each one. Pour in vanilla and mix until combined. Gradually add flour mixture to the creamed mixture and combine until all dry ingredients are incorporated. Stir in chopped chocolate. Roll into balls, 3cm in diameter. Optional: roll in granulated sugar before baking. Bake 10-12 minutes, checking at the eight-minute mark. Ovens vary, so monitor your cookies with care.
I also recommend a sprinkling of flaky sea salt just before baking to bring out the sweetness. Salt is an ideal accompaniment to the intensity of chocolate. I can’t guarantee that life will deal you a good hand today, but I can promise a healthy dose of comfort in these cookies. $ $ $
Saxo Cafe Colbjørnsensgade 11, 1652 Cph V; open 11:00-23:00; 3888 8288, www.saxocafe.dk; Chinese buffet 128kr pp, dim sum dishes from 35kr Saxo’s menu is an eclectic and comforting mix of cultures, incorporating Thai, Chinese and Vietnamese buffets, Dim Sum and Vietnamese menus, and traditional Danish fare. With such a wide choice, it’s a great place to go as a group who can’t agree on a choice of cuisine. On our visit our favourites were the Dim Sums - particularly the steamed pork dumplings that are perfectly fluffy. AK Gold Prag Gothersgade 39, 1123 Cph K; open Tue-Wed 17:00-23:30; Thu-Sat 17:00-24:00; SunMon closed; appetisers from 19Kr, mains from 89kr; 3391 4712, www.goldprag.dk Gold Prag has a distinct Austrian, Hungarian, Czech and Polish heritage and lives in a time of its own. The main courses are substantial, honestly cooked and rich in taste and include Vienna schnitzel with baked new potatoes and coleslaw and chicken breast topped with apricots and cheese. There are also dumplings cooked in the Austrian way and delicious goulash among the many different servings to be had. All in all it is a rough and tumble sort of place that is elegantly primitive with charisma, heartiness and austerely excellent food that perfectly accompanies classic beers and wine. SC Restaurant Dalaman Vodroffsvej 15, Frederiksberg C; Open daily 16:0024:00; 3322 1231; threecourse menus 119kr, 139kr & 159kr pp; www.dalaman.dk Turkish restaurant Dalaman puts an emphasis on good food and customer satisfaction. Pubs The Irish Rover Strøget 46, 1161 Cph K; Open daily 10:00-late; www. irishrover.dk You won’t find a more childfriendly pub in the whole city. From the fish and chip expat family nights at 17:00 on the last Friday of every month, to enjoying the Sunday roast (lamb, all the trimmings, just 99kr, kids portion for 58kr), they are always welcome. There’s live music Thursday-Sunday (22:00-late), the kitchen is open from 10:00 until late every day - serving a burger meal with pint for just 120kr - the pub caters to all sports fans, there’s a pool table in their back room where you can smoke, and upstairs there’s a new lounge area, which is the perfect place to relax with a view over Strøget. BH Brew Pub Vestergade 29, 1456 Cph K; restaurant open Mon-Sat 12:00-22:00, pub open MonThu 12:00-24:00, Fri-Sat 12:00-02:00, Sun closed; 3332 0060; three-course lunch menu 155kr; www.brewpub. dk The menu is full of hearty, homely, yet inventive dishes featuring inspired use of the same wonderful ingredients that go into the brewing process. Each dish can be easily matched by one of Brew Pub’s own concoctions from the casks across the courtyard. AK Kennedy’s Irish Bar Gammel Kongevej 23, 1610 Cph V; Open Mon-Sun 12:0002:00 It’s not an Irish pub. Instead it’s a pub owned by Irishmen, and there’s a big difference. It’s an authentic taste of what the Emerald Isle was like in the 1980s in a pub totally devoid of concepts, themes, and DIY Irish pub kits. Drop by at 17:00 on Fridays for the traditional Irish music sessions which are rapidly gaining in popularity. BH
Southern Cross Løngangstræde 37, Cph K; open Sun-Thu 15:00-03:00, Sat-Sun 12:00-05:00; 3311 0939 This Aussie boozer is a mecca for expats and Danes, old and young, that has a lively darts board, a fortnightly quiz, a good sports-viewing atmosphere, and a happy hour that lasts to 8pm during which you can buy beers for just 30kr. JHW The Dubliner Amagertorv 5, Strøget, 1160 Cph K; Opening Hours: Mon-Sun 10:00-late This pub is never quiet. It’s the perfect place for sports fans to mingle, or for live music which it provides every day. It also serves food all day from 10am to 10pm, and diners can find peace from the music and sport on a table overlooking the walking street, or on the first floor balcony overlooking Amagertorv. BH The Globe Nørregade 43-45, 1165 Cph K; Opening hours vary, until 03:00 Fri-Sat Friendly service and good value food make this the perfect city pub, and it’s difficult to know where to enjoy your pint given the number of options. If it’s company you want, you might try the main bar, or a private function, the second bar; seating-wise pull up a high chair, relax on cushioned benches or lord it as a bishop for the evening; or go genteel in the library - a great place to cheat in the fortnightly quiz, the longest running in the city. BH The Old English Pub Vesterbrogade 2B, 1620 Cph V; Open Sun-Thu 11:30-02:30, Fri-Sat 11:30-04:30; 3332 1921; www.oldenglishpub.dk This Victorian style English pub has all the class and authenticity of a Cotswolds country pub not a Costa del Sol flea trap. Facing Tivoli’s arches and just a stone’s throw from Strøget, it’s the ideal pit-stop on a tour of the city centre. LB

At last a burger joint that Istedgade can cherish with relish
mike hofman
For over 40 years, the building at Istedgade 34-36 in Vesterbro was home to a gay sauna, cinema and sex shop. But nowadays, it has new owners, who have converted the place into a burger restaurant. When you walk up the stairs to the first floor, you will find a cosy, lowprofile place. “Nothing fancy,” is the way the restaurant’s co-owner and manager Christian Hammerum describes it. He and his uncle have retained much of the old building that has been there since 1875, including the timber that is prevalent throughout the entire restaurant in the shape of some charming old wooden beams in the walls. Nothing reminds you of the activities that once happened here behind closed doors. “Me and my uncle had been looking for the right place for years,” Hammerum explains. “Just by luck we walked past this wonderful place and saw it was for sale.” On the menu you will find ten different burgers, ranging from original to more experimental ones. At The Copenhagen Post, we had the privilege of tasting a few of the burgers for lunch, and all of us agreed that it was pretty fantastic food and exceptional value for money. The original burger for example – with cheddar cheese and bacon, which consists of beautifully seasoned meat that is juicy and cooked medium rare - is the perfect burger to eat on the go. Most burgers these days in Denmark are made to eat with a knife and fork, but this one won’t slop out of your grasp all over Istedgade. You will also find more experimental burgers on the menu, like ‘Snaskede’ (chewy), which includes mozzarella and cucumber – which turned out to be a surprisingly good combination. The cool cucumber of the Greek tzatziki provided a tasty contrast to the juicy burger. Also in great demand at the office was the chicken burger. The chicken breast is usually a tricky piece of meat to cook as it can easily dry out, but it was succulent and tender. It ticked all the right boxes. And there’s no need to worry if you don’t eat meat. The vegetarian burger is a great alternative – and unlike many versions out there, it doesn’t try to pretend that it is meat. The burger is kind of hummus-y, making it a tasty and solid vegetarian offering. Everything is homemade – not only the burgers, but also the fries (the regular
Cheddar and bacon, a beautfully seasoned, tasty burger on a homemade bap, any yet nicely compact: the perfect size to eat on the go
one were the favourite in the office) and dips (has to be the aioli). The side-orders are varied. There are onion rings, really creamy coleslaw, and lots of different salads with a selection of sauces and garnishes. The fries are big – one option includes some of the biggest wedges we’ve ever seen – perfect for adding vinegar if you’re looking for that soggy served-inEngland effect. And best of all, every burger is moderately priced under 99kr. Below the restaurant, you will find an aptly-named cocktail bar: Die StrafBar. It’s the perfect place to have a drink
or two before hitting one of the clubs in the Meatpacking District. During the weekends, DJs will spice things up, and with deals like two cocktails for 100kr, you might want to have a few. Along with his uncle, Dan Holst, Hammerum has many years of experience in the restaurant business. Besides Vesterbros Originale Burgerrestaurant, they run Søpromenaden and Den Franske Café in Østerbro. The restaurant and bar have been open for one and a half months now and has already had an impressive five star
rating from Politiken - a newspaper that never usually gives inexpensive eateries more than four. “We are extremely satisfied,” Hammerum said. “The customers are happy and especially in the last week, the restaurant has been full every day.” Booking two days in advance, therefore, is a comfortable and secure way to ensure a table. However, Vesterbros Originale Burgerrestaurant offers takeaway, if you’re really set on getting that burger.

KASPER GULDBERG
We Bought a Zoo (7)
Dir: Cameron Crowe ; US dramedy, 2011, 124 mins; Matt Damon, Scarlett Johansson, Thomas Haden Church, Patrick Fugit, Colin Ford, Elle Fanning, Angus Macfadyen, Peter Riegert
Premieres June 14 Playing nationwide
A
FTER HIS misadventures with Elizabethtown and Vanilla Sky, writer-director Cameron Crowe, who also gave us Almost Famous and Jerry Maguire, returns with a slice of perfectly goodnatured and harmless family entertainment. Unfortunately, We Bought a Zoo is formulaic, fluffy, politically hypercorrect and dreamy (literally, at times, like some distorted version of reality). It made me fear I had accidentally walked into a Nicholas Sparks adaptation, especially as the relentless onslaught of pop tunes (a Crowe trademark, of course) failed to feel like anything but artificial sweetener. The story is simple and therefore lends itself well to another Crowe trademark: the pithy aphorism designed to underscore the central action (make it cast a longer shadow if you will). Remember this one from Vanilla Sky: “Every passing minute is another chance to turn it all around”? A reworking of it appears here: “All you need is 20 seconds of insane courage, and I promise something great will come of it.” And then, when the sceptics and doubters call you out on your lack of experience with their endless ‘why? why? why?’, you just go ‘why not?’ and smile and keep walking (though I must admit that this slogan achieves a nice effect in the film’s very last scene). The central action unfolds around Matt Damon’s character Benjamin Mee, a recent widower and likeable family father who quits his job as an LA broad-
“How do you like them apples?” “Dude, I’m a tiger, not freaking Ben Affleck” sheet columnist because the readers have grown disinterested in his “adventure reports” on hurricanes and killer bees. He is done with staged adventures, one might say, and at a whim decides to take on a real one (the artless title is of course a clue here). Heeding his older brother Duncan’s advice to weave “true joy” into life’s spiritual pattern, Benjamin, sensing a way through crippling grief and longing for his wife, takes the kids – a girl and a boy (Ford) aged seven and 14 – for a fresh start nine miles from the city. Duncan – routinely but amusingly played by the
inimitable Church – insists on the complete insanity of buying a dilapidated zoo full of exotic and dangerous animals, but that is what Benjamin does, emphasising instead the insane courage of this “authentic American experience.’ To quote from Duncan’s advice to his kid brother: “Travel the stages of grief but stop just before zebras get involved.” At Rosemoor Animal Park, Benjamin and the kids get along decently with the park’s eccentric but competent staff, led by the pretty workaholic Kelly (Johansson). Naturally, for a former writer, dealing with poisonous snakes and deadly
beasts is no picnic, and for a while business and the yet-to-be-convinced staff distract Benjamin from some serious problems concerning his relationship with his son. Not even the park’s other pretty female, Lily (Fanning), seems able to drag young Dylan away from his pastime of drawing morbid sketches and fantasising about the underworld – he too is grief-stricken, of course. The strained father-son relationship yields one of the few believable scenes in the film: a passionate heart-toheart at top-volume. Ford and Damon both shine in this challenging scene, and Crowe reminds us that he still knows a
thing or two about screen-writing. The funny outcome of this, when the yelling turns to small-talk about shaving, is worthy of Crowe’s better films. It is quite true, as has been suggested, that this film would probably have been unwatchable with a Jim Carrey or Eddie Murphy in the lead. Its draw-by-numbers quality certainly brings them both to mind. The current line-up is, admittedly, hard to beat, but the film’s various heartwarming stories sadly fail to ring true in its atmosphere of idealistic platitudes and curdling cuteness.
Predictable, only grandma shines The Lucky One (11) Dir: Scott Hicks; US drama, 2012, 101 mins; Zac Efron, Taylor Schilling, Blythe Danner
Premiered June 7 Playing nationwide
T
HE LUCKY ONE doesn’t deliver many plot twists, and if you have seen the trailer, you basically saw the whole film. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing. You know what to expect, so you can’t claim to be disappointed by it. It’s a romantic drama, so don’t anticipate fireworks.
The main character, Logan, a marine, believes that he survived Iraq thanks to a photo of a woman he found in the rubble. He sets out to find her and thank her. Lacking the right words, he takes up a job as a helper in the kennel and waits for the opportune moment. Feelings develop, cue an envious ex, a little bit of drama, a lot of glorification of the war and a tragic dénouement. The person behin The Lucky One is Scott Hicks (Shine) – a renowned director and an Oscar nominee. His direction was seamless, but it remains to be seen if this film will reach the acclaim some of his other creations received.
What jumps from the screen here are the nature shots. It may sound cheesy and unfair to the actors, but the views simply steal the spotlight. The lush green of the forests, the tranquil lake, the stormy river – all rather transparently reflect and highlight the innermost feelings of the characters. Perhaps the fault lies in the predictable script. The characters’ personalities were well-developed, but unfortunately not very original – bordering on stereotypes. Nothing in the dialogue popped up as dazzling, and Efron’s lines were just downright stiff and clichéd (whether it was the
script or Efron himself will be left unsaid). Schilling’s Beth lacked spunk. Thankfully, Blythe Danning takes the cherry in this one. Cheerful and cheeky, for a grandma, she brings warmth and humour the others lack and glues the whole thing together. Another small complaint is that the film could have been a tad shorter. A couple of minutes less would have meant a more dynamically paced story – and much less eye-rolling. Apart from that, it was a pleasant enough film – not bad, but not anything special either. The Vow (11)
Dir: Steve McQueen; UK drama, 2011, 101 mins; Michael, Carey Mulligan, Nicole Beharie Shame is a claustrophobic drama of intensity and urgency. It will make any recent films seem trivial and tame, a strange and unique beast indeed. It’s mature drama, bravely tackling complicated subject matter for those looking to experience something different. It’s original, visceral and disquieting - in the way only cinema can be. MW
Dir: Michael Sucsy; US drama, 2012, 104 mins; Rachel McAdams, Channing Tatum, Sam Neill A car accident puts Paige in a coma, and when she wakes up with severe memory loss, her husband Leo works to win her heart again. Dir: Timo Vuorensolas; Fin/ Aus/Ger action/com, 2012, 93 mins; Julia Dietze, Götz Otto, Christopher Kirby, Peta Sergeant Iron Sky has proved that the studio system has its uses; this script would likely have seen a drafts before getting greenlit. As it is, Vuorensolas goosestepped out of obsecurity and right into the cine-scheisse. Dir: Michel Hazanavicius; Fra/Bel dramedy, 2011, 100 mins; Jean Dujardin, Bernice Bejo, John Goodman, James Cromwell It’s difficult to see why this film is being championed so highly. Many will defend it by claiming that detractors are put off by a lack of colour, dialogue, explosions and other contemporary mainstays. But really their efforts would be better spent lauding Chaplin’s Modern Times or Murnau’s Sunrise. MW
Dir: Ridley Scott; US sci-fi, 2012, 126 mins; Michael Fassbender, Noomi Rapace, Charlize Theron, Idres Elba, Guy Pearce There are some decent moments of horror and tension. There are also planet-sized plot holes and moments of ham-fisted stupidity. Dir: James McTeigue; US thriller, 2012, 111 mins; John Cusack, Luke Evans, Alice Eve, Brendan Gleeson Giving his macabre style of writing, Edgar Ellan Poe probably would have liked the idea that made him turn in his grave, but even he would have drawn the line at the film The Raven. 111 minutes watching a raven perched on window sill would offer more thrills. JOS
Dir: Drew Goddards; US horror, 2012, 95 mins; Richard Jenkins, Bradley Whitford, Jesse Williams Unlike some horror movies that are considered comedic because the films are so bad, The Cabin... is funny and thought-provoking by design. Finally, a horror movie that everyone can, and should see. KE
The Dictator (11) Dir: Larry Charles; US comedy 2012, 83 mins; Sacha Baron Cohen, Anna Faris, Ben Kingsley, John C Reilly Cohen’s fans will recall the tepid disappointment of Ali G: Indahouse. Genuinely funny moments are too few, and almost all of those aren’t politicised. MW
Men in Black III (11) Dir: Barry Sonnenfeld; US action, 2012, 105 mins; Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones, Josh Brolin, Jemaine Clement It’s a light, fun sci-fiadventure, with perhaps a slightly darker overture than the previous films, MiB3 is worth seeing in a theatre – if for nothing else the roar of the Apollo rocket that rumbles your chest, and the 3D which is one of the better that I have encountered. KE
Salmon Fishing in the Yemen (7) Dir: Lasse Hallström; UK dramedy, 2011, 107 mins; Ewan McGregor, Emily Blunt, Kristin Scott Thomas They don’t really make movies like Salmon Fishing in the Yemen anymore, but when they did in the 90s, it was Hallström who made them, and in that way the movie feels like a pleasant throwback. PICK O THE W F EEK
Enid TV3 Puls, Mon 22:00
VERY FEW of the truly prolific authors become well known - quantity is no guarantee of quality. Then again, Musketeers scribe Alexandre Dumas wrote an impressive 277 works, and the queen of romance, Barbara Cartland, 722 – one novel for every seven weeks of her adult life. But she did live to 98, and the subject of this week’s pick managed 600 books, living 28 fewer years. Enid, according to the Guardian, is a “riveting portrait” of the novelist who gave the world 21 lashings of the famous five, 15 instalments of the Secret Seven and, err, 24 Noddy books. Helena Bonham Carter as Enid Blyton is “icy and unhinged by turns, while still giving you a sense of what people must have found enthralling about” the author. While this was a savage portrayal of an au-
thor who has made more kids happy than chocolate, it didn’t pursue the theory she used ghost-writers. No, instead it sought to explain how the self-sacrifice made her “a lonely, unhappy monster”. The Soviets are also under the cosh – in Arktika, the Russia Dream that Failed (SV2, Wed 17:55), a doc about their attempts to conquer the Arctic. They displaced thousands, repopulating it with two million people to operate mines and nuclear weapons bases (in 1992, there were more there than the rest of the world combined). And the Americans get a hard time in Ghosts of the 7th cavalry (DR2, Tue 21:00), which revisits some of the darkest chapters in American military history, from the cavalry being decimated at Lit-
tle Bighorn (1876), and taking part in both the Wounded Knee (1890) and No Gun Ri (1950) massacres. Elsewhere, US parallel universe drama series Fringe (K6, Sun 20:10) has more fans than fawning critics; The Last Templar (DR1, Fri & Sat 23:00) is wannabe Da Vinci Code nonsense; sports psychologist series Necessary Roughness (TV3 TV3 Puls, Mon 22:00 Enid Puls, Wed 22:00) has an annoying protagonist; No Subtitles Necessary: Laszlo & Vilmos (DRK, Sat 22:20) is a treat for film geeks about 1970s cinematography; sports fans shouldn’t miss the French Open finals (Eurosport, Sat & Sun 15:00) and Canadian Grand Prix (TV3+, Sun 18:30); while Infamous Assasinations this week deals with Lev Trotskij (DRK, Mon 21:35).
