BEN HAMILTON

I LIKE OBSERVING how class dividers are different from country to country. If you’d asked me when I was a student in Britain, I would have said, more or less, a privileged or university education. It drew, in my eyes, a clear line through British society. But I changed my mind once I started working. Now, I would contend that it’s whether you earn enough to send your toddler to nursery. The alternative, which involves one of you staying home for three years, really is a grisly prospect. I’ve never lived in the US or France, but at a pinch I’d guess that it’s respectively healthcare insurance and not having to queue to go to the top of the Eiffel Tower. Four hours last Saturday! I kid you not, although I did have the privilege of stopping a Russian queuebarger. “Sorry, are you in security?” was my opening gambit, after stopping him with my forearm.

MARY COBLE

Maneuvering

And in Denmark, it has to be having a car and a summerhouse. Because when I read a feature like the one on summer festivals (see G3), I contemplate taking my family to one of these ‘We’re so beautiful, don’t we know it’ affairs by public transport, dismiss it and very quickly realise that I’m in the gutter. Not that it’s a major source of irritation, but I have recently been riled by how the rich (let’s call them that) are currently trying to scrap a bank holiday Friday instead of a Thursday because they know they’ll take the following Friday off anyway (just like every MP did) and spend it at their summerhouse. Fortunately, our features this week are not elitist in the slightest. Kids Corner (see G8) recommends a great place to pick your own strawberries, Select Shopping (G9) has found some one-kroner condoms, and we’ve finally found a decent international book club (G8). Be careful about who you hook up with though – the lower classes (while I’m lower in Denmark, I remain middle in my home country) tend to have frightful taste in literature.

“I AM ADDICTED to koldskål. I know all the brands. The best one is the orange box with the flowers on it,” confesses American performance artist Mary Coble. Since moving to Denmark in 2010, Coble marks the seasons with food: æbleskiver in winter, koldskål in summer. Koldskål, the buttermilk dessert sweetened with sugar and vanilla and served with cookies, has become Mary’s favourite summer treat. “I have tried to embrace opportunities I have had in Denmark. I will try anything here.” Though she still has her mom mail her favourite foods from her childhood in the southern United States, like country ham, Jiffy Corn Muffin Mix, or grits, Coble has enjoyed learning about Danish food traditions. “Surprisingly, I have grown to love rye bread.” “But I don’t want this to all be about food!” laughs Coble. Her first solo-exhibition in Copenhagen, Maneuvering, opens at Overgaden on June 16. It will predominately feature new photography, video and performance pieces. “I am excited about sharing this work with my adopted city,” says the artist. The idea for the central pieces in this exhibition came from a visit to the small shipping town of Nakskov, Denmark. There, the beauty of an old shipbuilding warehouse struck Coble’s imagination. Though the warehouse was no longer in use, visitors could see the layers upon layers of drawings – plans for building ships –covering the floor. Coble, whose background is in photography, began her project by photographing the shipyard floor. She then developed a performance and a sound piece based on the visual research conducted in the town. Coble will present the live performance on the opening night of her exhibition at Overgaden. “For the performance, I will be hanging flags from the ceiling of the exhibition space,” explains Coble. The flags she is using are based on the flags typically used in the International Code of Signals, the flag code used to communicate between ships at sea. “I am interested in using the flag code signals to talk about miscommunication and misunderstanding,” Coble’s previous artwork has explored communication codes. For example, in her performance piece from 2008, Blood Script, she collected offensive words, such as ‘slut’ or ‘dyke’, along with racial slurs and then had the words tattooed, without ink, on her body in a performance at New York City’s PULSE art fair. This painful performance addressed how harsh communication through vulgar words can cause pain.

Performance Tivoli Cabaret

Tivoli, Vesterbrogade 3, Cph V; ends Sep 22; performances Tue-Thu 20:00, Thu-Sat 20:30; Tickets: 315-415kr; duration: 180 mins, www.tivolicabaret.dk Complete with little round tables and singers who double as waiting staff, Cabaret at Tivoli is an evening of light-hearted kitsch entertainment. Incorporating stand-up comedy, magic, drag queens, sketches, opera and music medleys, this will be a fun variety show, whether you take advantage of the free bar or not. Most of the acts are in Danish, but the cheesy pop hits are in a language everyone can understand. EB

A photo from Coble’s exhibition Fighting Cocks - ouch, is that a rat-tail? What next, a Chinese burn?

Coble is interested in using her artwork to talk about intolerance in society. Through her performance and photography work, she hopes to present marginalised communities to her audience, creating space for difference in the larger public. Her work most often deals with issues associated with LBGT communities, but she also works with environmental issues and racism, exploring social injustice in all forms. The artist received her master’s in fine art from George Washington University in 2004, and she began teaching directly after graduate school. She taught for nine years at both an art academy and a university in the United States. Now, she is an associate professor at Funen Art Academy in Odense. For Coble, teaching in Denmark is different than teaching in the US. “I am not standing in front of the classroom feeding information to the students. We are looking to learn from each other,” she explains. Teaching at the Funen Art Academy, Coble develops her curriculum based on her interests. The school is modelled on a workshop-based teaching system, and Coble has lead workshops on photography and the history of performance art, among other topics. “My teaching feeds my art and my art feeds my teaching. It seems like a perfect collaboration,” says Coble. “I moved to Denmark for my job, but I feel like I have found a different way of life,” comments Coble. The career-centred life she led in Washington DC shuttling between teaching requirements and other work left little time for relaxing. In Denmark, Coble has readily adopted the Danish attention to life work balance. She loves how the pace of professional life in Denmark

Still Going WRONG

gives her more time for family and travel. Coble notes that the occasion to leave work early, grab a bottle of wine, and sit in the park, if the weather is nice, arises more often than not in her new Copenhagen home. “I just wouldn’t take the time to sit in the park and enjoy the sun, when I lived in the US,” she says. Being in Scandinavia isn’t all about relaxing in the sun, however. Recently, Coble spent a month in Umeå Sweden, at the Iaspis Artist Residency. There along with her collaborative partner, Blithe Riley, she developed a series of performances for video. The performances feature Coble dressed in a black snowsuit engaged in challenging outdoor activities such as climbing huge snowdrifts, or drilling holes in the frozen sea. “It was so cold there. We weren’t sure why we were pushing ourselves in that landscape, but we wanted to get a good shot,” the artist explains. The dramatic imagery from this Nordic video project will be another part of her upcoming Overgaden exhibition. As an artist, social codes and miscommunication are a source of inspiration in her creative work. Of course, as an international living in Copenhagen she finds opportunities for miscommunication on a daily basis. “I often have to repeat words several times before people understand me – maybe it’s my Southern accent,” she laments. Despite the confusion of being misunderstood on occasion, she says there are more things to like in her Danish hometown than not. “There are many things I don’t miss about the US. I have more time here and I really enjoy that,” says Coble.

Over the course of a full year, production company Dadadans collected quotes, thoughts and tales from Danes for whom the memory of some personal mistake was presumably so awkward and haunting that sharing and confessing it seemed an appealing move. It provided the inspiration for a depiction of gaffes, pratfalls, and other involuntary acts of self-humiliation. KRG

2012 Festival Preview

This summer; all over Denmark THE DANISH summer is very unpredictable. But one thing is certain: it’s festival time. They take place all over the country, some with big international names on the lineup, and others with a great variety of Danish music. There’s something for every taste, whether you like metal, jazz, folk, pop or rock, while some are more family-minded. What they all have in common, though, is the good mood and the great opportunity to gather friends and family or to make new ones over a beer and some nice tunes. Invest in an umbrella, a pair of rubber boots and you’re set to go nuts in all kinds of weather. Still, there’s no harm if we just cross our fingers and hope the weather will be nice this year.

Elusive ... providing you have a beard Exotic and Danish – the musical answer to Noma The Eclectic Moniker

Lille Vega Saturday 21:00 130kr www.vega.dk www.theeclecticmoniker.com

S

OMEONE recently told me I could have been a Dane – purely based on my looks – but the only thing that betrayed me was my lack of facial hair. I didn’t have a beard, “not even a moustache”, this Danish guy told me astonished. For a short while, I’d been

thinking of growing one – just to look Danish. But soon enough, I realised that being a wannabeDane is not what I wanted and that I’d look like an absolute twat (no offence). But anyway, you’re probably much more interested in this band than in my facial hair, at least I assume. While everyone in The Eclectic Moniker looks typically Danish – you can guess why – they don’t sound anything like it. Their tropical sound transports you straight to the beach – a rather welcome distraction from the

disappointing Danish summer. The collective was formed in February 2010 by singer-songwriter Frederik Vedersø. Originally it started as a trio with a great number of others joining in at later dates – nowadays it’s a seven-piece band. “The Eclectic Moniker name has its own distinctive meaning,” the band writes on its Facebook page. It’s called ‘Eclectic’ because it draws from multiple influences and styles to gain complementary insights into music. “The Eclectic Moniker means, in essence, the nickname under

which lots of different parts are put together to create a coherent universe. So there you have it – a unique name for a unique band.” And unique they are. Their music is a melting pot of different genres: indie rock, calypso, Afro-pop and alternative pop. “Living in such a cold, wet country like Denmark really helps us to dream away,” Vedersø told Danish music blog WiMP. Back in 2010, their appearance at the 2010 Start! Festival in Copenhagen gave them a solid fan base in Denmark. The band

shot to fame after appearing in 2011 in P3’s KarriereKanonen, a music talent show on DR P3. The Eclectic Moniker performed at the 2011 Roskilde Festival and in January last year, they won the Odense live prisen. In May last year, they were the support band at Vega for yet another well-known Danish act, Oh Land. At the same time they released their self-named debut album, which went straight to #9 in the Danish music charts in its week of release. Now, more than a year later, they’re back at Vega – as the

main act this time. The band have been praised for their live performances by acclaimed music magazines like Gaffa and Soundvenue, which both gave them 5/6 star ratings. So, grow your beard, wear your Hawaii shirt and forget about the Danish summer – even if it’s just for one night.

FRIDAY 15

Kashmir

copenhell.dk

Tivoli; 19:00; 95kr One of the biggest Danish alternative rock acts of the 21st century, Kashmir remain a Copenhagen favourite. Injecting life into the Danish music scene since the mid‘90s with their use of electronic instrumentation, the band’s electrorock has also made them popular across Europe. Their latest album, Tresspasser (2011), includes a duet with David Bowie and a poem recitation by Lou Reed, and features a number of singles that have found commercial success around the globe. With 10kr beverages on offer from 19:00 and Kashmir not going on stage until 22:00, don’t be in any rush to move on from the fairground.

ell will be unleashed upon an unsuspecting Copenhagen this weekend when metal-heads from all over Scandinavia, and beyond, descend upon the industrial harbour of Refshaleøen for the third consecutive incarnation of ‘Copenhell’. Started in 2010, this metal festival is no real competitor for Roskilde, but nor should it be. This festival is in fact partnered

Billow & Peaceful James

Loppen; 21:00; 30kr Tonight’s gig features two of Copenhagen’s up-and-coming hip-hop names. Both have respectable underground followings for their jazz-infused R‘n’B and are making waves in the Danish music industry. Billow – heavily influenced by the likes of D’Angelo, Mos Def and Marvin Gaye – buys into a smoother blend of R‘n’B, basing his sound on catchy one-liners and dancey hooks. Accompanying him will be Peaceful James, another rapper turning his back on misogynistic, aggressive and controversial lyrics, instead investing his skills in a more progressive kind of rap. Both will perform in English. with Roskilde and intended purely for those music lovers who, by the end of it, want their heads to be throbbing and their stretched neck muscles to be aching. Presumably these punters won’t be partaking in that counterproductive Scandinavian practice of wearing earplugs at rock concerts. The festival features a packed and varied (within the genre) programme and will present both big, established names alongside those lesser known. In addition to the two main stages, last year the festival introduced an ‘Upcoming stage’ exclusively for those bands looking to get signed. This year sees the festival going from strength to strength with headliners Slayer, long considered the masters of metal, and Marilyn Manson, the crown prince showman of shock rock. Slayer debuted in the early ‘80s and hit pay-dirt with their third studio album Reign in Blood in ‘86. Marilyn Manson, who famously took his name from two polar opposite cultural icons, Marilyn Monroe and Charles Manson, shot to fame a decade later in the mid ‘90s with his de-

Lou Reed

Falconer Salen; 19:00; 340-570kr Reed hardly needs an introduction. One of the key architects of modern rock ‘n’ roll, the influence of Lou Reed and his band The Velvet Underground remains palpable even today. In tonight’s concert, the New Yorker will be turning out material from his latest collaborative record with Metallica, Lulu (2011), as well as a chunk of classics, including no doubt the hit ‘Perfect Day’. Surprisingly, there are still tickets available, but be sure to book up ASAP to avoid disappointment.

Pure McCartney

Store Vega; 20:00; 300kr To celebrate the 70th birthday of the eponymous Beatles rock-legend, a collective of Copenhagen-based acts including Tim Christensen, The Damn Crystals, Mike Viola and Tracy Bonham will perform a unique rendition of their favourite McCartney record, RAM (1971). Regarded as one of the most unique solo records made by a former Beatle, the album taps into an entirely different aesthetic of McCartney’s musical universe – far from what we hear in the music of The Beatles.

Justin Townes Earle

Pumpehuset; 20:00; 200kr The son of pioneering Texan singer-songwriter Steve Earle, Justin has carried on the family name with his bluegrass brand of country rock. Having made a big impression in the US from a young age, the Nashville-born crooner has gone on to become a global star with the music media taking a particular liking to his distinct fusion of blues, country and folk elements. His latest record, Nothing’s Gonna Change the Way You Feel About Me Now (2012), has been on the receiving end of numerous favourable reviews.

Everlast

Loppen; 21:00; 160kr Once infamous for his role in the New York rap collective, House of Pain, Everlast rebranded himself as a solo act in the late ‘90s, experimenting with acoustic hip-hop. Making his breakthrough with the hit ‘What it’s Like’, which acted as a blueprint for his heavily stylised hip-hop, Everlast has continued to nurture his moody song writing. He is currently on tour promoting his emotionally-driven record, Songs of the Ungrateful Living (2011), a mixed bag of catchy lyrics and glib melodies. Daniel Van der Noon

but album Portrait Of An American Family. He cemented his cross fertilisation of metal, goth, industrial and pop-rock with the far-reaching success of his cover of the Eurythmics’ hit, ‘Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)’. He arrives in Copenhagen with a recently released album, Born Villain, tracks from which will no doubt form a portion of his set. Also playing are Anthrax, another early 1980s act who, alongside Megadeth, Metallica (a band to which Danes claim some ownership) and the aforementioned Slayer, formed the ‘big four’ of metal; Grammy-nominated Lamb Of God, who have been labelled ‘groove metal’ and are according to their own bassist “a metal-playing punk band”; and Mastodon, Killswitch Engage, and Immortal. In total, 16 international bands are playing in what will be Copenhell’s most impressive line-up to date. See online for the full listings. Tickets for the event are 715kr a pop, which includes both days, and if you plan on camping at the festival you need to pay only a further 495kr for a two-man tent (to keep) – partic-

ularly useful when getting hammered at the venue and crawling to your slumber. If that’s the plan, you should hurry as the tents are almost all sold out. Be aware that a camping ticket will also grant you access to a live warm-up session on the Thursday evening, prior to the actual festival. Gates open at 17:00 on Thursday evening. The weekend has been nominated for Politiken’s ‘Event of the Year’ award, which no doubt is due to a concerted emphasis on creating a full-blooded atmospheric experience that goes beyond the music itself, tailored specifically to this audience: amongst other things there’ll be an apparently legendary beer garden, lots of fire and, in collaboration with the film festival CPH:DOX, a cinema that will screen a programme called HELL:DOX – documentary films on particular bands, tracing the evolution of this enduring genre. By raising hell in Copenhagen, the organisers have created a heaven for headbangers. Rock on. Mark Walker

Nightlife Half Italo/Half Haram

Bakken; 23:00 Free Adm DJs including Kim Las, Dora Luna and M Pavlovski, known locally for frequent sets at venues in Kødbyen, are bound to attract Bakken regulars with the promise of Italian disco-dance and sonic relics from America’s southern country music tradition. A step above your typical house music night, Bakken is the beating heart of Copenhagen’s hip Kødbyen club scene, attracting hundreds of partygoers week in, week out. Always a good idea.

Trentemøller: ‘Round About Midnight’

CPH Jazzhouse; 23:00; 90kr Trentemøller rose to fame on the underground Danish dance scene in the late ‘90s, originally DJing on the local club circuit and working his way up following a release of singles with small independent records. Moving even further from the dancefloor and delving into a more ‘sophisticated’ kind of

music, tonight Trentemøller presents the audience with his latest side-project, which pays tribute to Miles Davis’ selftitled album from 1958. There will also be appearances by some of Trentemøller’s trusty collaborators, who’ll spice up the night with a touch of surf rock and ‘60s garage rock.

Balkan Beat Party

Stengade; 23:00; 100kr (80kr students) Possibly the most exciting genre to have entered popular culture over the last decade is Balkan gypsy-rock. Popularised by selfacclaimed gypsy-punks Gogol Bordello and a number of underground DJs on both sides of the pond, it turns the rhythmic sounds of the eastern bloc upside down and inside out. One of the lesser-known venues in the city among visitors, Stengade remains the infamous base of the original Rub-a-Dub club night and a prime spot for Nørrebro regulars.

KIDS CORNER

Treating their tastebuds EVERY YEAR at the start of the long summer holiday, I request the same task of my children: that they write or draw a list of all the things they hope to do together whilst not at school. Of course, the usual requests for the zoo, the safari park and fishing for crabs during long days at the seaside are included, and those we do. I don’t think it hurts every now and then to allow them to indulge their tastebuds too, and I am always amused by the many gastronomical treats that make the list. I am one very willing chaperone. Paradis Many Cph locations; www.paradisis.dk You will probably already be very familiar with Paradis, an ice cream shop that specialises in fresh Italian ice cream. The first Paradis shop was opened in 2000 by Thor Thorøe in Aarhus, following his return home from a period working in a gelateria in Rome. Using the Italian ethos of a daily production using fresh natural ingredients, each Paradis shop has an ice cream manufacturer working tirelessly in the production room behind the store to produce as much fabulous ice cream as is needed every day. My elder boys are divided between creamy and fruity: one always chooses the sublime pistachio alongside another chocolatey flavour, while the other always has fruit sorbets – most typically peach and blueberry scoops. Just as the shop stood out on the street, I stood out in the store, dressed in head-to-toe black in a place that sells absolutely no black items. If you’re in need of summer clothes, be sure to stop by here and pick a new outfit or two. And if you need to consult your friends before handing over your money, stop by the Magic Mirror, snap a picture, and upload it to Facebook or Twitter or email it to your friends to see if they approve. Children? No problem. Leave them in the in-store cinema where they watch the day’s movie or bring a DVD from home while you shop in peace. Be sure to enjoy the refreshments before leaving!

Kids Children’s Workshop: NEW Food in Art Statens Museum for Kunst, Sølvgade 48- 50, Cph K; Sat & Sun 10:30; entry: 45kr If there’s any food that makes your mouth water, send your kids over to the museum and have them paint or sculpt your favourite dishes. Perhaps put the quote on a T-shirt and you’re sure to get a dancing partner at ‘Dancing at Faelledparken’, now in its eleventh year. Though it’s advertised as ‘Dancing with the Danes’ on many tourist attraction websites, a slogan that may not initially do much to heat up your blood, the description of some of the dancing that will be taking place at Faelledparken from June 18 to July 19, every Monday to Thursday, may do something for you. Tango (the current fave rave) starts things off, and then for a month the dance types alternate between salsa, folkdance, bollywood (that should be a mid-section body challenge), rumba, ballroom, African dancing, and everybody’s ‘winging it’ favorite, Swing Dance.

Carnival of the Animals NEW Koncerthuset, DR Byen, Emil Holms Kanal 20, Cph S; Sat 17:30; tickets: 75-150kr; 3520 3040; www.dr.dk Musicians from DR’s orchestras will perform the hilarious Carnival of the Animals while an artist draws pictures of the animals that appear in the music. After the concert, kids can release balloons with animal drawings attached to them. Anyone who finds a balloon may write back to the child with details of how far the balloon travelled. SM Theme: Shapes NEW and Colours Avedøre Bibliotek, H j u l m ag e r p o rt e n 1, Hvidovre; Tue 10:00; free adm; ages 3-6 Using materials from the library, including books and computers, children learn about shapes and colours. After a dream about being sucked into the refrigerator, he returns to school, and ultimately becomes a hero. SM

Anita Lerche, the Danish queen of bollywood, struts her stuff

All this is for free, with instruction given and live bands. Food, drinks, and the usual body of enticements will be offered too. Among the highlights are: the opening night on which Navina Ostergaard will teach the Argentine tango, with Malmø’s live orchestra Orquesta Tipica Tangarte; salsa on the following night, taught by Stine Ortvad with DJ Ruben Hererra; bollywood with Murari Lal Saini and DJ Mik Lal on Thursday June 21; Signe Frydenlund and Peter Wurtzen demonstrating the charleston at the swing night on Monday June 25. Swing fans can also look forward to July 9 when Kati Eriikka Arikoski and Eric Underbjerg will be teaching the Lindy Hop, DJ-ed by Per Mogensen, with another event planned for the 16th. Meanwhile, for those of a romantic bent, Mads Pedersen of Nordvest Ballroom will both teach and be DJ for ballroom dancing on July 2. The main organiser and promoter of this event is the Culture and Leisure Committee of the City Council and you

can get fine-tuned details including the DJ and instructor for every night at their website or Facebook page, and also a mini-map. If arriving by car, there is nearby parking; by bus, take the 1A, 3A, 6A, or 150A. If you’re a cautious type, and want to know what you’re getting into before you might potentially go splat in a pratfall, highlights of some earlier events can be viewed on YouTube, including a very rainy evening last year, which nevertheless didn’t seem to deter the dancers from enjoying themselves. Also, they say there’s a brand new dancefloor this year on which you can strut your stuff. At first it may seem odd that the dances are being held on a weeknight. But when you think about it, it makes sense going directly to work instead of falling asleep on your sofa. And with the variety of dance genres offered, even if you’re not Fred Astaire, there will be something to suit your style. MARSHA MCCREADIE

The CPH

Once again the summer gods were kind for Copenhagen Celtic’s annual summer tournament, which this year was contested by ten teams representing countries (the home nations and Scandinavia mainly) or invited companies, including Ad People, Saxo Bank and the Copenhagen Post. The teams play a gruelling 80 minutes just to qualify for the semi-finals, and then after the final hang out to cool down with a few beers, a smashing barbecue, a penalty competition and some entertainment for the kids.

England’s Christopher Pilbeam (in white), one of the co-organisers of the party, reminds the defending champions about the tournament’s´play with a beer’ policy, but (left-right) Hjortur, Villi, Oli, Petur and Thor are having none of it.

A 1983 beano to Dublin, and once taking a wolfhound for a walk, was enough to qualify Dean Beddall for the irish team, seen here sharing a joke with Pete Denham, the organiser of the penalty competition, which this year was won by Jonesy

This year the club asked long-term member Ronnie Wilson to make the presentations. Here he is medalling iceland’s Baldvin, with Enok looking on. Behind Ronnie is Belfast Paul, quite possibly the loudest person you’ll ever meet - woe betide you if your name’s in a famous song because he’ll never stop singing it.

After over 120 minutes of football, the relief on iceland’s players was plain to see after they had come back from a goal down to force penalties against a Rest of the World team almost totally made up of Copenhagen Celtic players. Pictured here seconds after the decisive kick are (left to right) Enok, Thor, Eiki, Dagur, Petur, Oli, Gummi, Villi and Hjortur.

Club members (left to right) Joe Walker, Freddie Petit and Ryan Bate enjoying proceedings.

Another company participating was Saxo Bank, who had a rollercoaster of a day that started with a big dipper when they became the only team to lose to the Copenhagen Post! But then they went loop the loop by becoming the only team in two years to beat iceland, and then took a point off the highly fancied Scandinavian side, before losing to minnows England.

FOOD & DRINK

InOut | THE CPH POST ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE FOOD BLOG

BY SIMON COOPER

I REMEMBER the first time I tasted vegetarian sausages: they were disgusting. They were soggy, soya-protein kind of grey lengths of matter, and clearly focused much more on exactly recreating the look of a sausage. Since they first started becoming popular, such meat-free facsimiles of much-loved British classics have come a long way – largely because of a shift in mentality of what actually constitutes a ‘sausage’. Some of the recipes knocking about these days, although resulting in food that bears little aesthetic resemblance to British (or otherwise) bangers, compensate in their meatiness. It doesn’t have

to look like a sausage: getting the sustenance is more important. Especially if, like me, you pack a serious appetite. The recipe underneath is based loosely on one I saw on a cookery programme recently, and it interested me because of the fact the chefs were going for a beefy texture, rather than anything that looked like sausages. Although also good as part of a meal, these work particularly well as a snack or as part of a buffet or dinner party. Unfortunately though, due to the high breadcrumb count, they won’t really work inside more bread in the same way meaty ones would. You could always try though ...

One of them is in London, the other one is Kiin Kiin, which you’ll find in the heart of Nørrebro. And it’s well deserved. Kiin Kiin isn’t just a restaurant, it’s an experience, a place where every little detail is thought through. It’s a who’s who of classic French and French-inspired Danish dishes as well as a monthly set menu. Any chef would be proud of this. SC 1. th. Herluf Gade 9, Cph K; 3393 5770, 1th@1th.dk; 1,250kr per person; www.1th.dk 1. th. is a gourmet restaurant with a twist. Tucked away behind a hard-to-find door on the first floor to the right of a typical Copenhagen apartment, the restaurant is based around the concept of the dinner party with guests stepping into what appears to be a private apartment and then being utterly spoilt by their hosts. The monthly set menu costs 1,250kr and has a whopping ten courses, and you can tell them in advance of any food quirks you might have and they will personalise the menu for you. Terrific food, friendly and attentive service and a unique setting. CS

Cap Horn Nyhavn 21, Cph K; open Mon-Fri 10:00-00:00, Sat-Sun 09:00-00:00; 3312 8504; starters from 99kr, main courses from 139kr, desserts from 39kr; see www.caphorn.dk for special events Nyhavn, the old harbour, is an idyllic area of magic and hygge what the Danes like to say when referring to anything that is cosy, charming, or delightful: all qualities Cap Horn has in abundance. Its simple menu boasts a fine selection of organic, homemade Danish fare, with a touch of seasonal influence. There were two highlights: the veal, pumpkin, mushrooms and potatoes with amazing truffle sauce (a “best ever veal experience”) and the chocolate cake (“Oh My God”), which was possibly the best chocolate cake ever! MM BioMio Halmtorvet 19, 1700 Cph V; open daily 12:00-24:00 (later Fri and Sat), kitchen open 12:00-22:00; 3331 2000; starters 75kr, mains 135kr; www. biomio.dk Located in an old warehouse next to trendy Kødbyen, Bio Mio is certainly unusual for conservative Copenhagen. It’s stylish without being pretentious, fast enough that you don’t go crazy waiting for food, and loud enough that you can make a racket without anyone raising an eyebrow. JH SushiTreat Fox Jarmers Plads 3, Cph V; open Mon-Thu 16:30-22:00, Fri-Sat 16:30-24:00 with Club Treat from 22:00-02:00; 3338 7030 The SushiTreat restaurant at the Hotel Fox serves the best California-style sushi in the city, offers an impressive drinks and wine card, and has a completely unique atmosphere on Friday and Saturday nights when you can order sushi until 2am while listening to some of the city’s best DJs . If not, toast or oven bake some bread and whizz it in the blender. Put some butter in a pan and brown the leeks for around 5-7 minutes. KRG Saga Queen Havnegade 31, Cph K (near Nyhavn); sails twice Thu-Sat at 13:00 (lunch ) & 19:00 (dinner); reservations 4675 6460 & info@sagaqueen.dk; www. sagaqueen.dk The city’s only restaurant cruise ship, the Saga Queen offers a two-hour lunch cruise and a three-hour dinner cruise. Every table has a wonderful window view, and there’s a choice of set menus. Sometimes a meal can feel like an eternity, but here the time passed by quickly and pleasurably as we enjoyed a feast for both our eyes and our very satisfied stomachs. JC Brasserie Degas Trommesalen 5, Cph V; 3322 2826; see www.brasseriedegas.dk for more info If you like macarons, this is the place to get them. Then form the mixture into sausage-like shapes; take golf ball-size lumps of the dough in your hands and form them slowly and surely. Don’t attempt to make them as long and thin as sausages, instead go for 5-inch long oblong shapes. You should get around eight from the mixture. Beat the egg in a bowl, and in a separate bowl put the rest of the breadcrumbs. Coat each sausage in the egg and then in breadcrumbs. (You may wish to repeat this process if you have enough breadcrumbs/egg left at the end.) Heat regular cooking oil in a pan on a medium-high heat and cook the sausages for 10-12 minutes, turning as and when needed. Serve with salad, vegetables or onion chutneys - wouldn’t recommend mashed potato. Finally, weather permitting, these little gems could be barbequed. The smoke gives an extra smoky edge to the cheese and breadcrumbs.

Saxo Cafe Colbjørnsensgade 11, 1652 Cph V; open 11:00-23:00; 3888 8288, www.saxocafe.dk; Chinese buffet 128kr pp, dim sum dishes from 35kr Saxo’s menu is an eclectic and comforting mix of cultures, incorporating Thai, Chinese and Vietnamese buffets, Dim Sum and Vietnamese menus, and traditional Danish fare. With such a wide choice, it’s a great place to go as a group who can’t agree on a choice of cuisine. On our visit our favourites were the Dim Sums - particularly the steamed pork dumplings that are perfectly fluffy. AK Gold Prag Gothersgade 39, 1123 Cph K; open Tue-Wed 17:00-23:30; Thu-Sat 17:00-24:00; SunMon closed; appetisers from 19Kr, mains from 89kr; 3391 4712, www.goldprag.dk Gold Prag has a distinct Austrian, Hungarian, Czech and Polish heritage and lives in a time of its own. The main courses are substantial, honestly cooked and rich in taste and include Vienna schnitzel with baked new potatoes and coleslaw and chicken breast topped with apricots and cheese. There are also dumplings cooked in the Austrian way and delicious goulash among the many different servings to be had. All in all it is a rough and tumble sort of place that is elegantly primitive with charisma, heartiness and austerely excellent food that perfectly accompanies classic beers and wine. There’s live music Thursday-Sunday (22:00-late), the kitchen is open from 10:00 until late every day - serving a burger meal with pint for just 120kr - the pub caters to all sports fans, there’s a pool table in their back room where you can smoke, and upstairs there’s a new lounge area, which is the perfect place to relax with a view over Strøget. BH Brew Pub Vestergade 29, 1456 Cph K; restaurant open Mon-Sat 12:00-22:00, pub open MonThu 12:00-24:00, Fri-Sat 12:00-02:00, Sun closed; 3332 0060; three-course lunch menu 155kr; www.brewpub. dk The menu is full of hearty, homely, yet inventive dishes featuring inspired use of the same wonderful ingredients that go into the brewing process. AK Kennedy’s Irish Bar Gammel Kongevej 23, 1610 Cph V; Open Mon-Sun 12:0002:00 It’s not an Irish pub. Instead it’s a pub owned by Irishmen, and there’s a big difference. It’s an authentic taste of what the Emerald Isle was like in the 1980s in a pub totally devoid of concepts, themes, and DIY Irish pub kits. Drop by at 17:00 on Fridays for the traditional Irish music sessions which are rapidly gaining in popularity. BH

Southern Cross Løngangstræde 37, Cph K; open Sun-Thu 15:00-03:00, Sat-Sun 12:00-05:00; 3311 0939 This Aussie boozer is a mecca for expats and Danes, old and young, that has a lively darts board, a fortnightly quiz, a good sports-viewing atmosphere, and a happy hour that lasts to 8pm during which you can buy beers for just 30kr. JHW The Dubliner Amagertorv 5, Strøget, 1160 Cph K; Opening Hours: Mon-Sun 10:00-late This pub is never quiet. It’s the perfect place for sports fans to mingle, or for live music which it provides every day. It also serves food all day from 10am to 10pm, and diners can find peace from the music and sport on a table overlooking the walking street, or on the first floor balcony overlooking Amagertorv. BH The Globe Nørregade 43-45, 1165 Cph K; Opening hours vary, until 03:00 Fri-Sat Friendly service and good value food make this the perfect city pub, and it’s difficult to know where to enjoy your pint given the number of options. If it’s company you want, you might try the main bar, or a private function, the second bar; seating-wise pull up a high chair, relax on cushioned benches or lord it as a bishop for the evening; or go genteel in the library - a great place to cheat in the fortnightly quiz, the longest running in the city. BH The Old English Pub Vesterbrogade 2B, 1620 Cph V; Open Sun-Thu 11:30-02:30, Fri-Sat 11:30-04:30; 3332 1921; www.oldenglishpub.dk This Victorian style English pub has all the class and authenticity of a Cotswolds country pub not a Costa del Sol flea trap. Facing Tivoli’s arches and just a stone’s throw from Strøget, it’s the ideal pit-stop on a tour of the city centre. LB

Eva Perón (aka Evita) fought for justice for the rights of the poor. But while her battle never ends, the search for the perfect steak house experience just did. This new Argentinian steak house has managed to bring a perfect mix of exclusivity and street patina all the way from South America to Copenhagen K. We enter the restaurant a little early. The place is stunning in a voluptuous style you might’ve found in a classy ‘40s restaurant in Argentina – think massive chandeliers and cow-skin couches. Our table is ready, but the cozy ambiance by the bar, and a little door that opens into the street, begs us to have a couple of mojitos before eating. We suck down two perfectly mixed glasses while enjoying a couple of blissful minutes of the subtle and beautiful Latin music that oozes from the walls by the bar. Now we are ready. No table has ever spelled S-T-E-A-K as much as the table at Evita Peron. In front of the medieval-style metal plate lies a knife – well, not just a knife, but an ivory-handled, super-sharp instrument that looks like it was designed to be the trusted street companion of a tango dancing nobleman. “Let me cut meat for you, sire,” it seems to whisper. The heavy cutlery is elegantly wrapped in a custom-made leather casing, which – of course – is embroidered with the initials of the restaurant. For starters we choose the Tuna Ceviche and the Empanada Trio. To accompany our starters we are suggested two glasses of the elegant 2009/Sancerre ‘Clos de Bouffants’ from the Loire district. With a subtle hint of elderberry and gooseberry, this fantastic wine elevates the already delicious starters to new heights. I’ve heard that in ‘the old days’ the waiter was the hardest and most respected position in the restaurant. Only after years of being a chef could one qualify to become a waiter, since the waiter has to know both the food and the wine better than anyone else, and on top of that has to be an excellent judge of character to be able to decide which meal and wine to recommend to which guest – an art form of infinite depths. Well, Evita Peron has a waiter like that. I didn’t catch his name – I don’t know if he has one or if it has been washed away by the years and years this man has spent studying the patterns of taste, human psychology and service – but like a humble allknowing magician, he firmly and respectfully suggested and adjusted our orders through the evening, displaying patience and expertise beyond anything I’ve seen. In itself, it’s a reason to visit Evita Peron.

A dark and sultry setting. Nobody’s seated because they’re too busy tangoing like it’s their last night on Earth

After careful consultation and evaluation of our desires, we decide that I should go for the American 400 gram rib-eye medium rare, accompanied by the Evita Peron-style mashed potatoes and Madagascar pepper sauce. He would not normally recommend the pepper sauce to just anyone, but since I insist that I cannot be intimidated by his promise that it’s “too spicy for most people”, he deems me worthy. My date orders the 250 gram Argetinian tenderloin with French fries and béarnaise sauce. At this point our faith in the waiter is so strong that we don’t even look at the

wine list, but simply look at him and raise our brows as if to say: “What would you get?” Without hesitation he receives our telepathic request and answers: “The 2008 Petit Fleur de Lindaflor, Bodega Monteviejo of the Mendoza region in Argentina.” He is right about everything. My 400 grams of bloody USA is perfect for my taste and the pepper sauce is indeed only for people who think it impossible for a burning sensation to affect a meal poorly, but the crescendo that brings it all together is the bottle of 2008 Argentinian blood – the perfect choice. In an ecstasy of meat and

wine we float through the rest of the meal. When we land again, our plates have been replaced with spectacular desserts, and the sublime performance of a live jazz band gives the room an amber glow. While enjoying the music and our Crème brûle and Hazelnut mousse accompanied by two Cortados and two glasses of Pedro Ximenes sherry – Oxford 1970 (at this point served without consultation even needed), we have already begun dreaming about our hasty return to Evita Perón.

OW OLD are you – 40?” asks a fellow student … Actually it’s been a little under 30 years since the original of this film jump-started the career of Johnny Depp. But make no mistake, 21 Jump Street is no cheesy reboot. It’s obvious that everyone from the writers to the directors to the actors to the producers (who also happen to be the actors) are trying to build off the former project, not skewer it into a run of the mill spoof. They bring trashy TV, action cinema and the YouTube generation together and mash it like a professional DJ. The script, by Michael Bacall (Scott Pilgrim vs the World), rings brightly with sassy and salacious lines and sharp-edged characters, and what the directors, Phil Lord and Chris Miller (Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs), lack in finesse, they make up for with attitude and the realisation that sometimes making fun of oneself is often the funniest comedy. They adapt a decidedly juvenile tone and it fits perfectly. After Schmidt (28-year-old Hill) and Jenko (31-year-old Tatum) prove incapable of even menial police work, Deputy Chief Hardy (Nick Offerman, one scene but he nails it) assigns them to a new division, led by Captain Dickson (Ice Cube), an angry black man who explains that he’s

While Jonah Hill tends to always deliver, for Channing Tatum this is a standout career-defining performance an angry black man. “Embrace your stereotypes!” he blusters. He also explains the rules: don’t get expelled, don’t sleep with anyone, infiltrate the dealers and find the supplier. And then there’s the assignment. “We’re reviving a cancelled undercover project from the ‘80s ... The people behind this lack creativity and they’ve run out of ideas, so what they do now is just recycle shit from the past and hope that nobody will notice,” Deputy Chief Hardy tells his officers. Thus, the once socially chal-

lenged (read: juggling club member) tubby loser Schmidt must return to high school to face what he fears is more persecution. Meanwhile, Jenko, the prototypical dumb jock finds himself facing a redefined social paradigm in which jocks now rank beneath the laid-back, eco-friendly types led by Eric (Dave Franco). The result is a cheeky inversion of the usual teen movie blueprint not to mention the fact that these ‘teens’ are obviously adults and yet no-one seems to care. Add a case of not knowing their own false identities

and you’ve got comedy. “I really thought this job would have more car chases and explosions ... and less homeless people doodooing everywhere,” Jenko complains to Schmidt. Two words described my opinion of Channing Tatum until this movie: God awful. Be it an action film or rom-com, he was often more wooden than the set furniture. However, he’s a revelation in the comedy genre with terrific timing and a sort of goofy sweetness. Let’s just hope his agent realises this as well. As the

other lead, Hill holds up his end of the bargain. The rest of the cast, including Ice Cube put in solid performances that never leave us wondering why they were cast in the first place – a frequent pratfall in these types of comedies. 21 Jump Street is instantly one of my top all-time favourite comedies (though I also rank Office Space up there as well so take that as you will). There were numerous LOL moments, some great cameos and a refreshing ability to laugh at its own silliness.

Tits up, this is dead in the water

OLLYWOOD is at it again with a ridiculously bad horror film to help kick off the start of the summer blockbuster season. There are films that are so bad they’re good. Then there are films that are just plain awful. This film tried to be the former, but fell

somewhere in between. The result: lukewarm feelings and mild amusement, if you try not to take things too seriously and just have fun. For those of you who missed the previous film, entitled Piranha 3D, the film Piranha 3DD is the sequel. If you’re unfamiliar with the franchise, it plays off of the teen horror genre with gratuitous sex and violence. In Piranha 3DD, the ancient piranhas are back to wreak more havoc – this time at a water park. The title of the sequel plays off of the very large, DD bra size, and you can be sure that the film has plenty of breasts and

nudity. Cheap thrills empowered with 3D are the name of the game, not to mention a lot of gore and shock factor. Unfortunately, it’s not a very scary film. Sure, there are moments to make you jump, which surprise you but do not really frighten you. And there is no build-up of suspense whatsoever. It just jumps right into the action and basically never lets up. We always know something bad is going to happen, and it generally happens pretty quickly. The acting was not that great, but it didn’t help that the characters written for them were ridiculously stu-

pid. The only funny performance was Christopher Lloyd as the scientist, although Hasselhoff was somewhat entertaining as well. There are a few diamonds in the rough, but overall, it’s just a ridiculously bad film. The plot was horribly illogical. The writers seemed to embrace this fact and run away with it. They deserve some credit for coming up with a few creatively gory scenes. If there was one quote to sum up the entire attitude of the film, it would be this: “Josh cut off his penis ‘cause something came out of my vagina.” ELIZABETH DELLAPENNA

15 - 21 June 2012

New this Week Get the Gringo (15) Dir: Adrian Grunberg; US action, 2012, 96 mins; Mel Gibson, Peter Stormare, Dean Norris Mel Gibson finds new life in a Mexican jail after getting caught with $4 million dollars of mobster money. Not an easy place for an outsider, unless it’s with the help of someone who knows the ropes – a 10-year-old kid. It’s both cheesy and striking, corny and bold, dismissible and yet strangely appealing. MH

Book Your Tickets Shame (15) Dir: Steve McQueen; UK drama, 2011, 101 mins; Michael Fassbender, Carey Mulligan, Nicole Beharie Shame is a claustrophobic drama of intensity and urgency. It will make any recent films seem trivial and tame, a strange and unique beast indeed. It’s mature drama, bravely tackling complicated subject matter for those looking to experience something different. It’s original, visceral and disquieting – in the way only cinema can be. MW

The Avengers (11)

We Bought a Zoo (7)

Dir: John Whedon; US action sci-fi, 2012, 142 mins; Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston The Avengers is for Marvel what Dark Night was for DC – Whedon has scored the crowning achievement for Marvel Studio’s interconnected universe. MW

Dir: Cameron Crowe; US dramedy, 2011, 124 mins; Matt Damon, Scarlett Johansson, Thomas Haden Church, Patrick Fugit After his misadventures with Elizabethtown and Vanilla Sky, writer-director Cameron Crown returns with a slice of perfectly good-natured and harmless family entertainment. Unfortunately, We Bought a Zoo is formulaic, fluffy, politically hypercorrect and dreamy. KG

Avoid like the Plague What to Expect When You’re Expecting (11) Dir: Gary Ross; US sci-fi, 2012, 142 mins; Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson Prepare to keep your expectations low for the latest Hollywood ensemble rom com, What to Expect When You’re Expecting. For a film that claims to show how unpredictable life can be, the script is horribly predictable. ED

Dark Shadows (11) Dir: Tim Burton; US horror/comedy, 2012, 113 mins; Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Helena Bonham Carter There is absolutely nothing dark about this film and the only thing lurking in the shadow is a huge amount of wasted potential. A man-made monster may well be a feature retained from the original series, however in this case the man is Burton and the monster is Dark Shadows. AS

Snow White and the Huntsman (11) Dir: Rupert Sanders; UK/ US action, 2012, 127 mins; Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron, Chris Hemsworth, Sam Claflin, Ian McShane In a twist to the fairy tale, the huntsman ordered to take Snow White into the woods to kill her winds up becoming her protector and mentor in a quest to vanquish the Evil Queen. But unfortunately, this overlong retelling of a Grimm fairy tale is short on magic. MH

Also Playing American Pie (7) Dir: Jon Hurwitz; US comedy, 2012, 110 mins; Jason Biggs, Alyson Hannigan, Seann William Scott The last serving of pie may not be the best, but it certainly is tasty in its own right and a worthy clinger to a fantastic (in a manner of speaking) series of films. KE

We Need to Talk About Kevin (15) Dir: Lynne Ramsay; UK, US drama, 2011, 112 mins; Tilda Swinton, John C Reilly, Ezra Miller Kevin’s mother struggles to love her strange child, despite the increasingly vicious things he says and does as he grows up. But Kevin is just getting started, and his final act will be beyond anything anyone imagined. It’s not an easy story to tell, but the filmmakers do it well. MH

The Dictator (11) Dir: Larry Charles; US comedy, 2012, 83 mins; Sacha Baron Cohen, Anna Faris, Ben Kingsley, John C Reilly Cohen’s fans will recall the tepid disappointment of Ali G: Indahouse. The Dictator shares the fiction approach of that film and confirms the superiority of Cohen’s fiction/documentery hybrids over these pure fictions. Genuinely funny moments are too few, and almost all of those aren’t politicised. MW

The Lucky One (11) Dir: Scott Hicks; US drama, 2012, 101 mins; Zac Efron, Taylor Schilling, Blythe Danner The Lucky One doesn’t deliver many plot twists, and if you have seen the trailer, you basically saw the whole film. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing. You know what to expect, so you can’t claim to be disappointed by it. It’s a romantic drama, so don’t expect fireworks. DC

G19

Prometheus (15)

Men in Black III (11)

Dir: Ridley Scott; US sci-fi, 2012, 126 mins; Michael Fassbender, Noomi Rapace, Charlize Theron, Idres Elba, Guy Pearce There are some decent moments of horror and tension. There are also planet-sized plot holes and moments of ham-fisted stupidity. With the recent announcement that Ridley is returning to that other sci-fi masterpiece, Blade Runner, there’s a sense that in his twilight years he’s riding the coattails of his past success. MW

Dir: Barry Sonnenfeld; US action, 2012, 105 mins; Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones, Josh Brolin, Jemaine Clement It’s a light, fun sci-fiadventure, with perhaps a slightly darker overture than the previous films, MiB3 is worth seeing in a theatre – if for nothing else the roar of the Apollo rocket that rumbles your chest, and the 3D which is one of the better that I have encountered. KE

The Artist (3) Dir: Michel Hazanavicius; Fra/Bel dramedy, 2011, 100 mins; Jean Dujardin, Bernice Bejo, John Goodman, James Cromwell It’s difficult to see why this film is being championed so highly. Many will defend it by claiming that detractors are put off by a lack of colour, dialogue, explosions and other contemporary mainstays. But really their efforts would be better spent lauding Chaplin’s Modern Times or Murnau’s Sunrise. MW

The Hunger Games (11) Dir: Gary Ross; US sci-fi, 2012, 142 mins; Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson Ross has successfully dissected and expanded the book and produced something that works as a film – so long as you’re not too precious about its origins. MH

Salmon Fishing in the Yemen (7) Dir: Lasse Hallström; UK dramedy, 2011, 107 mins; Ewan McGregor, Emily Blunt, Kristin Scott Thomas They don’t really make movies like Salmon Fishing in the Yemen anymore, but when they did in the 90s, it was Hallström who made them, and in that way the movie feels like a pleasant throwback. MH

Wuthering Heights (15) Dir: Andrea Arnold; UK drama, 2011, 129 mins; Kaya Scodelario, James Howson, Oliver Milburn Based on the classic novel by Emily Brontë, this adaption of Wuthering Heights is one of the most impressive costume dramas of the year. MH

PICK O THE W F EEK

Carlos DRK, Fri 21:00

IMAGINE A WORLD with minimal security at every transport hub. Where pre-interview screenings and bullet-proof screens are less common than Hailey’s Comet. Where airports include outdoor walkways from which passengers can fire a bazookas at planes. Welcome to the 1970s: not the day but the decade of The Jackal. It was a golden age for terrorism and this week’s pick, the brilliant 2010 French/German drama series Carlos, takes us right to the heart of it. A series about Carlos the Jackal’s life was never going to succeed with a sympathetic or glamourous protagonist. Its cool-handed and journalistic approach has wowed the critics (94 on Metacritic). “Shot by shot, scene by scene, it’s a fluid and enthralling piece of work. I wasn’t

bored for a millisecond,” enthused New York Magazine. And the LA Times chimed that it was a “hypnotic and sprawling five-hour-plus piece of cinematic genius”. So why has DRK won the rights to screen it? Probably because it’s in no less than eight languages – most predominantly French. They’re all Greek to me, but Go Greek for a week (DR2, Sat 21:35) isn’t in its account of how widespread corruption has led to financial meltdown. At least that’s the view of this British doc. Or maybe Michael Portillo and the Great Euro Crisis (DR2, Sat 20:45) will offer another side of the argument. On the other side of the pond they’ve remade a British classic and it’s apparently not bad. Prime Suspect stars the always appealing Ma-

ria Bello as Detective Jane Timoney – notice how they’ve slightly altered the name. Clever. Elsewhere, A short stay in Switzerland is a well-received, truelife drama about euthanasia starring Julie Walters; new series Teen Wolf (TV3+, Mon 22:00) can’t be any worse than the films; discussion show Same Sex Marriage Shouldn’t Be DRK, Fri 21:00 Carlos Legalised (BBC World, Sat 10:10 or 22:10) will provide glimpses of the human zoo; Aung San Suu Kyi in Oslo (BBC World, Sat 12:00) includes live coverage of her Nobel Prize speech; Feathered Cocaine (DR2, Thu 22:50) is an interesting exposé on falcon smuggling; Empire (DRK, Mon 20:00) is a five-part series that gets under the skin of what drives civilisations to colonise. THE COPEN

THE CHILDREN’S FAIR 2012!

International and Danish professionals and their families Sunday 17 June from 14 - 17 at Valbyparken

Dear Copenhagen Post readers,

I don’t feel it should be expected that everyone shares the same cultural or recreational habits that Danes do, or that libraries or associations have the same importance for other cultures as they do in Denmark. This is where children meet, and where their parents get to know each other. None of this is written in any of the scores of welcome folders newcomers receive. And sometimes, simple advice about how to meet Danes is treated like top-secret information.

i i i ii On behalf of all our employees, I would like to welcome you to second annual Children’s Fair.

Our decision last year grew out of the realisation that despite an on-going discussion about foreigners in Denmark, there were few initiatives that were of use to foreign families in their daily lives.

As the father of two young children, I appreciate being able to live in a country where it is possible to combine family and career. My family and I live in Copenhagen, and we frequently make use of the city’s recreational facilities. My children are involved in after school activities and are regular patrons of the local branch of our public library, parks and playgrounds. We’re happy with our lives in Copenhagen, but the question is whether foreigners living in Denmark would find it equally natural to make use of everything the city has to offer them.

i i

Raffle for Danish Red Cross

the City of Copenhagen, the Copenhagen police and the fire brigade, and the Employment Ministry, we have been able to organise a day for the entire family to enjoy sports, culture and other activities, while the same time learning more about what the city has to offer them.

i i

That’s unfortunate, because when we time and again talk about the vaunted Danish ‘work-life balance’, the ‘life’ half of the equation rests on cultural activities and community groups. I don’t think foreigners are as familiar with Danish socialisation customs as we think they are, but we are beginning to grow more conscious that they aren’t. And that’s something that is reflected in the support this year’s Children’s Fair has received. Thanks to the co-operation of DGI, the Copenhagen Public Library,

i i

Through the generous contributions of our partners, we will again this year be offering pony rides, face painting and balloon animals – all free of charge. A number of the groups in attendance will be performing. So, pack a picnic basket, hope for good weather and come out and join us and our families. We promise you lots of fun and the opportunity to meet other foreign and Danish families. Yours sincerely,

i i i

Support their efforts in Syria! Raffle tickets will be sold for 10 kr each and 50 kr for 6 tickets! All proceeds from the raffle will go directly to the Danish Red Cross.

i i i
