When faced with writing about Cafe Retro, which is located in the centre of Copenhagen, doing so in a manner that is enjoyable to read while staying truthful is a difficult task. That is mainly because there are two sides to Cafe Retro – the packed place where students come for a beer and a fair share of chit-chat, and the side that offers quiet enjoyable shade from a burning Sunday afternoon sun so rarely seen in the streets of this city. That first instance happened just a few days after I had moved to Copenhagen. I did not know any streets, no idea about the means of transportation and I knew literally no one in the city. couch-surfing requests had left me with an invitation to the weekly gathering of the town’s couch-surfing travellers, which that week just happened to be held in this place. I thought it would be boring. To me, all bars and cafes in the old city are the same: overpriced and tacky. But as is always the case, my preconceptions never have anything to do with reality. After a confusing start, triggered by some people at the door asking for donations of some sort, I managed to locate the menu consisting of a short list of the basics, handwritten in chalk above the bar. The feeble looking list offers bottled or draught beers with prices ranging from 30-50kr, or if you feel like wine the choice is between the 50kr glass and the 120kr bottle. More potent spirits are also available, and the designated drivers have not been forgotten either, with a choice of the most familiar soda drinks, warm drinks and either hot or iced coffee. Some snacks are also available but you truly don’t need anything else. The place might be one story high but the feeling is very cosy. The whole interior decoration complements the exterior design of the building very well – it is clearly not its prime, but it feels full

Retro Bar’s cosy interior more than makes up for the delapitated look it has from the outside

of stories and looks like an open invitation to get more familiarized with the place – a simple endeavour. With the menu being so simple, I just had to go and find the crowd of strangers I was due to meet. The place felt like a maze and I couldn’t make out the odd looking door hiding the staircase to the top story. The top story is regrettably not as cosy as the street level floor. Heavy, cumbersome wooden chairs replaced the well-cushioned sofas, and the matching tables bring back thoughts of German wurstles served at the countryside during a beer festival. But even though the menu doesn’t include any sausages, beer was a

given! Soon our group grew as more and more people started filling up the place - which is open until 1 am on Friday and Saturdays When we began sitting in pairs on a single chair, a bright Californian among us opened the door to salvation: we would not feel crowded anymore, as right behind us was the event room, which can be booked for any purpose without cost, and we were fortunate enough to find it vacant. Our 15-square- metre haven provided us with a well earned feeling of privacy away from the human chaos found elsewhere. On Sunday I returned, alone and not expecting com-

pany. I was just yearning for those relaxing sofas and a coffee table to rest my weary feet on, and perhaps indulge myself with an ice-latte, the specialty this summer for 30kr. There was free Wi-Fi and they even had a laptop I could borrow from the bar. I also managed to strike up a nice conversation with the volunteer bartender, who enlightened me about the people raising funds at the entrance, and how the entire profit from the place is sent to countries in need like Sierra Leone or Tanza-

It is always available for public viewing because the audience stands outside the window. This exhibition features work by Danish artist Thorbjørn Reuter Christiansen. The artist’s work will be shown in the context of an ongoing investigation into gentrification efforts in Vesterbro, formerly home to the Carlsberg factory. BF

nia. That helped explain a lot about the essence of the place. No, it’s not tacky, and no, it’s not overpriced. It’s a place where your beer or wine make a difference in the third world, where the small shop by the entrance sells hand-made souvenirs from Africa, and where any person with an artistic talent can take centre-stage. Oh yeah, and it’s definitely a prime place to roost when taking in the Jazz Festival.

Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band ★★★★★★ July 7, Orange

WHEN YOU SPEND nearly a third of your booking budget on securing one of the biggest acts on the planet, you expect that act to deliver. And when it came to Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band, the Roskilde Festival clearly got what it paid for. But the 2012 Roskilde Festival was much more than the epic three-hour concert by The Boss. In addition to providing the venue for big names like Björk and The Cure, the festival’s iconic and revered Orange stage also hosted a late afternoon dance party with Amadou & Mariam and gave a handful of national acts the chance to play what must be every Danish performer’s dream gig. Meanwhile, outside of the expansive Orange, amazing performances were to be found in every direction, whether from the dreamlike performance of Maïa Vidal at the Gloria stage, the ‘electro vacilón’ of Columbians Bomba Estéreo at Cosmopol, the enchanting Swedish sisters of First Aid Kit at Odeon, or the evening of hipster heaven provided by Bon Iver at Arena. And, of course, that’s just the music. Anyone who has been to the Roskilde Festival will attest that the motto ‘More than music’ is apt. Whether participating in the annual nude run or getting your hair cut by an asylum seeker, there is always something to do at Roskilde. Yes, there were a lot of other shows – a lot of great shows – but the 2012 Roskilde Festival will be best remembered for The Boss

OME ROSKILDE concerts you see because you like the act, you’re familiar with their material and you want to see how it transfers live. Some you see because you’ve heard good things and they’re the best option playing at the moment. Other times, you stumble upon unknown quantities and give them a chance to catch your interest. But some shows you see because you know you need to be there. You know it will provide an unforgettable experience and that there is no way you will miss it. Such was the case Saturday night for The Boss, who, let’s face it, has been expected to carry this year’s Roskilde Festival since his booking was revealed in November. I’m no Bruce Springsteen mega-fan, but as someone who grew up in middle America in the 1980s, Bruce is etched into the fabric of my life. I’ve heard his music since a little kid in Iowa, played by my parents, played in trailer parks, pick-up trucks, diners. Bruce’s working-class American is me, my family, my roots. More than a bit surreal then to find myself, just three days after a lonely 4th of July spent away from home and on what happened to be my father’s 60th birthday, to be belting out ‘Born in the USA’ amongst a sea of over 60,000 Europeans. Yet, there I was, and for three beautiful hours I wouldn’t wanted to have been anywhere else. Mere seconds after taking the Orange stage with an impassioned cry of “Hva’ så, Roskiiiiilde?”, Springsteen had the massive crowd wrapped around his Jersey finger. Launching into ‘No Surrender’, Springsteen and the E Street Band never looked back as they proceeded to deliver a concert bound to hold a special place in the Roskilde Festival history books. Given the marathon length of the performance, I took the opportunity to venture to various corners of the Orange scene in an effort to gauge how fully engaged the massive crowd was in the Boss’s performance. As Springsteen told the crowd that the E Street Band “came thousands of miles to be here tonight” and repeatedly asked: “Can you feel the spirit?”, it was clear that even all the way out to Orange’s periphery, they could. Hell, I even spotted the finance minister, Margrethe Vestager, enjoying the show. Adding to the excitement and historic feel of the evening, Springsteen and the E Street Band were soon thereafter joined on stage by Philadelphia hip-hop crew The Roots, who had delivered their own triumphant performance on Orange earlier in the day. The appearance also made for a late-night American television reunion of sorts, as The Roots, who perform as the house band for Late Night with Jimmy Fallen, were temporarily sharing the stage with longtime E Street drummer Max Weinberg, who for years was the bandleader for Late Night with Conan O’Brien. With the music of my homeland filling the air, I began making the rounds checking in on all of the American flags I saw flapping in the sky. Thinking I might find a fellow misplaced countryman, I gave up after speaking with three successive Old Glory-waving Danes and settled in for the show’s tremendous third act, a run through Springsteen’s most classic and iconic songs. ‘Born in the USA’ provided perhaps the largest crowd sing-along I’ve ever been a part of, followed by ‘Born to Run’ and ‘Glory Days’, at which point the sheer magnitude of what I was seeing – a classic performance by one of America’s most iconic performers at one of Europe’s most tradition-filled music venues – caused my eyes to get a bit misty. It should be noted that, at age 62, Springsteen is something of a freak of nature. When not singing his heart out or strumming away on the guitar, he spent the show running around stage, greeting fans in the pit (even pulling a somewhat reluctant ‘Little’ Steven Van Zandt down with him at one point), standing on a piano and doing an age-defying backbend. That he had to periodically sit on the speakers and lay on stage to catch his breath was more than understandable. Shortly after a tribute to former E Street saxophonist Clarence ‘The Big Man’ Clemons, who passed away in 2011 and has had his place filled admirably by his nephew Jake, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band led the audience through a rousing performance of ‘Twist and Shout’, a perfect cap for a night that managed to transcend both time and place. ETH DITTO, the charismatic frontwoman for American band Gossip, revealed her love affair with Denmark Friday evening on the Orange stage. “I love this place with its cute houses, cute cars, and cute little bicycles!” she proclaimed. Ditto often thanked her crowd with the words “tusind tak” and sporadically instructed her adorers to “Skååååål!” The big and bold singer bounded onto stage barefoot, wearing a clingy black dress that showed off her ample bosom. She moved around so much that at one point one of her bra cups was fully exposed. “I just have to fix my dress,” she quipped. Ditto even wiped her mouth and sweat using the part of the dress that fell around her décolletage. Ditto progressively lost control as the set list whittled down. Her dark

NYONE who’s ever seen Björk perform live knows that she is the sort of artist who can virtually do no wrong. She’s in a league of her own – in fact she often seems to live in a planet of her own design. To say that she is innovative and beyond gifted is an understatement, but when it comes to Björk, words never quite seem to be enough. Sunday night’s performance at the Orange stage made that crystal clear. Dressed in a black, shiny dress that resembled robotic snakes wrapped around her body, completed with a variation of the iconic orange wig that goes with the style of her 2011 album Biophilia, Björk certainly looked the part. Accompanied by an army of Icelandic choir-girls and a string of musicians, the performance was hauntingly flawless. There was an organic feel about the entire show. She portrayed a magical world of an almost cleansing and spiritual nature. There were plenty of effects, both visual and musical, and for the duration of the concert, the audience was in Björk’s territory and not the other way around. She put on a show worthy of a musical sorceress and did not even try to cater to the audience. There was no walk down memory lane, no string of classic hits and nearly no dialogue between the audience and the shining star. There was only Björk being Björk, and that was enough. you, thank you) were nearly the only words that came out of Björk’s mouth. She introduced the band and choir, right as she returned to the stage for a two-song encore. The only other time she really talked was right before the very last song of the evening. She asked if it was okay that she spoke English and urged the audience to sing along. ‘Declare Independence’, from her 2007 album Volta became the last song played at the Orange stage this year. It was a powerful delivery, with the choir going crazy in what looked like an alien party on stage. Having seen her legendary performance at Orange stage in 2007, I confess that I have mixed feelings about Sunday

night’s show. It was strangely paradoxical to be bored in the presence of greatness, and there were moments where I wished she would drop the Biophilia act and went all out like she did five years ago. But as a Björk fan, I think you have to be willing to let her take the lead and fulfil her own vision. She is a headliner of the highest calibre and a true artist. Her performance was a statement to her ability to reinvent herself and at the end of the day, she did was she does best – she was herself. And the audience got to journey through her wonderfully bizarre world.

blue and gold. They didn’t move much from that spot for the whole show, which had the potential to make the performance too static. But their band members, especially the dreadlocked drummer and the backup dancers, provided the necessary movement on stage. Their musical style mashes up funk, jazz, tribal song and pop, and the uplifting and joyous mood it creates makes people want to unleash their inhibitions and dance. By the time the group played ‘Africa’ off their 2008 album, Welcome To Mali, the audience was in the right frame of mind. In the pit, the crowd was dancing manically, with some clusters following the moves exhibited by the two groovy backup dancers dressed in matching orange, red and yellow outfits.

Beth Ditto: Lover of Denmark

eye-makeup and bluntly styled black hair became increasingly dishevelled as the show went on. Ditto didn’t seem to mind though, and neither did the crowd. Her self-confidence and nonchalance was totally refreshing. Finishing the show with ‘It Takes Two’, Ditto climbed down a ladder mid-song and disappeared from the stage. Keeping the audience in a state of anticipation, about a minute passed before Ditto came out at the front of the stage barrier to shake hands and kiss the cheeks of her admirers. HE CROWD was sparse when Amadou & Mariam first came onto the Orange stage, but it didn’t take long until their melodious West African music lured the masses into their clutches. Mariam Doumbia wore a neutral expression for most of the performance and while Amadou Bagayoko was more smiley, it is more than possible that the blind pair had no real perception of how many Roskilde revellers had come to see them play. After being introduced as a favourite fixture to the Roskilde lineup over the years, the duo from Mali –who have been deemed the first from West Africa to play blues-rock – were led onto stage by festival staff and propped in front of the microphones. Doumbia was wrapped like a present with a huge electric blue bow on the top of her head and Bagayoko was clad in complementary

formed several songs from Biophilia – her eighth full-length studio album and the world’s first “app-album” in collaboration with Apple. ‘Thunderbolt’, ‘Moon’ and ‘Hollow’ were beautifully delivered. It was a pleasure and a privilege to take it all in and the songs had an almost divine energy to them. In fact, there was a Biophilia vibe throughout the entire concert, even when she performed songs from other albums. If I didn’t know any better, I would have thought that she decided to play songs from only one album – quite an amazing feat, seeing how eclectic her music is, in actuality. The choir was an essential part of the performance and their voices were, for lack of a better word, heavenly. They complemented Björk in every possible way: musically, vocally and visually. They provided a beautiful, at times ominous, texture to the performance while somehow remaining in the background even when performing avant-garde choreography. Long-time Björk fans got to enjoy some of her ‘90’s work, including ‘Hunter’ from Homogenic (1997) and ‘Isobel’ from Post (1995). ‘One Day’ from Debut (1993), was Björk‘s first encore and it was one of the few numbers she performed without the full presence of her choir. Accompanied by only one instrument, Björk serenaded the audience in one of the evening’s many magical moments. She whistled quite a bit during the song. Backed by two stone-faced female dancers and a three-piece band, Santigold rattled through an extensive set that went through a lot of the singles from her two albums. Santigold looked absolutely stunning, with neo-African prints dominating three costume changes. The three guys in the band looked like a cross between chickens and safari hunters. During ‘Hold the Line’, the dancers whipped off their tops to reveal black and white equestrian outfits, and swirled their ropes provocatively in the company of a pantomime horse. “I don’t want to ruin the moment, but it’s just two of my band members in there,”

wedish sisters First Aid Kit proved Saturday afternoon that headbanging has a place in the folk music genre. The Stockholm duo swung their long locks from side to side – and upside down – like woodland animals on the Odeon stage. The 3pm timeslot worked well for the group, as they could rouse the exhausted festival-goers into a decent state of consciousness, warming them up for another long night ahead. Romancing the crowd with their echo-y, country vocals, First Aid Kit mixed up their set list with older tunes like ‘Hard Believer’ and ‘Ghost Town’ from their 2010 record, The Big Black & The Blue, with a cover of Fever Ray’s

Santigold said. The night’s best moment was during ‘Creator’, when she invited her fans to dance with her on stage. “We need a few really good dancers on here,” she yelled. A few turned out to be a few dozen and she couldn’t prevent the approaching fans from trying to touch and hug her. As soon as the first notes of the old favourite hit, we got to see some embarrassingly hilarious white boy moves and girls getting down low. Costume changes, fancy choreography and a great performance – it was clear that everyone on stage worked very hard to make this a show to remember, and they certainly succeeded. And while many left the show too drunk to remember a single thing, they probably found themselves the next day singing the chorus of one of Santigold’s many catchy songs.

eunited after 14 years,” a voice announced from the Arena stage, “hardcore masterpieces: Refused!” And there was no turning back. Everyone expected greatness and Sweden’s favourite hardcore-punkers did not disappoint. The venue was dark. A large, black curtain reading ‘Refused’ covered the stage and the audience called for the band, cheering, clapping and whistling. They took their sweet time to appear, but what’s another 10 minutes when you’ve been waiting 14 years? The curtain dropped and a legendary concert began. Right off the bat, Refused made one of the most dramatic entrances this reviewer has seen at the Roskilde Festival. The band seemed to explode onto the stage as the curtain vanished before them. Lead singer Dennis Lyxzén was on top of his game, vocally and performance-wise. His showmanship was up there with the greats – he was like the Swedish punk version of Mick Jagger. It was impossible not to be in awe of this man, who jumped more times than any other performer I’ve ever seen. The band’s masterpiece album from 1998, The Shape of Punk to Come, comprised much of the set-list. Ranked in 2003 at number 13 on Kerrang! magazine’s ‘50 Most Influential Albums of All Time’, the record was celebrated in full force. Both Refused and the audience seemed to be on fire the entire time. It was like Lyxzén was possessed and noth-

‘When I Grow Up’. Predictably, the last song they played was their most well known: ‘The Lion’s Roar’, off their second album of the same name. They gave it a longer intro to keep the crowd waiting, and when they did launch into the tune, they shook their heads violently like two lions on the pride lands. Little grunts were expelled from their mouths as they shook their hair till they were sore during the extended instrumentals. They frolicked off the stage and the crowd called them back. For their encore, First Aid Kit brought up the tempo with ‘King Of The World’. The song usually features US singer/songwriter Bright Eyes, but this time, the band’s drummer provided the male vocal. ollowing in the footsteps of a blockbuster show by cumbia kings Celso Piña earlier in the evening, Bogotá darlings Bomba Estéreo delivered a performance that may well go down as one of the best of Roskilde 2012. I turned up to the show expecting the Colombian pioneers of ‘electro vacilón’ (electro tropical) to deliver a show of epic proportions, following a credible performance by warm-up DJs who did their bit to stir up the crowd with a scintillating mix of thumping electro beats riddled with pronounced rock guitar interjections. My expectations were neither too high nor too exaggerated, as the Colombians were solid from the word ‘go’, playing a concert that was both clinical and extremely entertaining all in one.

ing could stop him from rocking the hell out of the Arena stage. He crowd-surfed, sang amongst the audience, threw his microphone stand up in the air and even did a summersault followed by the splits – a truly amazing frontman. It was almost difficult to keep track of Lyxzén, as he seemed to be everywhere. During the song ‘Rather be Dead’ from the 1996 album Songs to Fan the Flames of Discontent, Lyxzén suddenly got much taller, as he was standing on one of the speakers before triumphantly jumping back to the stage in perfect synch with the music. Refused is known for their sociallyconscious lyrics, so when Lyxzén said that the band’s words “mean more now than ever because the world is more f**ked up now than 14 years ago”, there was a moment when the crowd knew that this wasn’t just a concert. It was a reunion for those who believe that music can make a difference. When Lyxzén bellowed out lines like “We dance to all the wrong songs, we enjoy all the wrong moves” they suddenly gained new meaning. After the final song was finished, Lyxzén laid on the stage floor, looking pleased and strangely poetic. After a while, he rose up and thanked the audience for their support, claiming they were the reason Refused was kept alive. After that, Refused stood on stage and said farewell to a loyal and content audience. The reunion was over but the concert was forever imprinted in the minds of the audience. Refused was back. Claudia Santos Bomba Estéreo managed, midway through their show, to get the audience to crouch low and light their lighters in a show of solidarity, a feat that is seldom achieved at Roskilde, less so at such an early point in the proceedings. Lead singer Lilliana Saumet was on fire as she rapped fiercely and evocatively to the live acoustic backings of songs such as ‘Fuego’ and the driven ‘La boquilla.’ Backed by an impressive light show, Bomba Estéreo hardly put a foot wrong and clearly demonstrated why they are one of Colombia’s top acts of the moment. Roskilde’s Cosmopol stage has been praised by many festival goers over numerous years for it’s unique atmosphere and quaint acoustics, both of which have contributed to providing quite the ideal platform for world music year after year. BEER BOWLING, public urination, gaffer tape, and of course, music. It is the alluring and repelling combination of these things that make Roskilde Festival so special. Last week marked Copenhagen Post interns Mike Hofman and Elise Beacom’s first encounter with the odious sights, delectable sounds and pungent smells of Roskilde. Here’s how it went down.

MIKE HOFMAN

Q: Roskilde is supposed to have a community vibe. Did you find the more experienced festival goers welcoming? MIKE: It started off nicely, with people on the train accompanying us to the festival check-in. However, by the end of the festival, our neighbours kept us awake by playing death metal at 5am and stole my laptop charger and Elise’s shoes. Oh well, at least they didn’t poo in our tent. ELISE: Others were a bit too friendly. One bloke told me I had nice breasts and then asked if he could touch them. Of course, I politely declined his offer, knowing my boyfriend might read this. Q: What was the craziest thing you saw? MIKE: We saw a guy being held down by about six people who had decided to cut off his beautiful long locks. You could almost see the tears in his eyes. We just laughed and took photos. ELISE: We also took photos of a girl

who had been gaffer taped to a power pole by her so-called friends. The redfaced girl was camera shy, but what could she do about it? Run? Q: What was the most disturbing thing you saw? MIKE: Seeing the can collectors nonchalantly shaking piss off the cans while our news editor was midstream nearby. ELISE: One word of advice to our fellow male campers: if you are going to pee, please do so facing away from any bystanders. Even if there’s a wire fence between us, we can still see you. And more importantly, do not make eyecontact with us while you are pissing. Q: What did you do when there were no shows on? MIKE: I thought about getting my haircut by an asylum seeker at Poor City but was too busy playing Danish drinking games. ELISE: Yeah, Mike and I played a

variation of Kongespil using beer cans and a ball. My team was victorious because we downed our beers first. Q: What else did you eat and drink? MIKE: We had access to the media area which provided free Coke, coffee and water, and, if we were really lucky, nectarines and bananas. Needless to say, we spent a lot of time there, being the cheapskates that we are. But hey, we’re unpaid interns, so what do you expect? It was also where we befriended some middle-aged Dutch women with a sack of home-brewed liquorice vodka. ELISE: Tinned tuna and crackers were the standard meal, washed down with warm vodka or warm beer. Actually, our neighbours had the far more ingenious idea of digging a hole underneath their tent so they could store their beers and keep them cool. Q: Your most memorable moment? MIKE: The shower afterwards.

ELISE: We were privy to an impromptu performance by a dozenstrong choir of men in penguin tuxedos. They performed classical versions of songs like the ‘Star Wars’ theme to a tent in our camping section. It was really beautiful and felt so out of place in such a scummy backdrop. Q: Did your tent survive? MIKE: Basically all the tents in camping section L were totally trashed, but ours stood tall and strong like a Danish Viking. ELISE: We purposely bought a tent with a Danish flag on it to reduce the chance of someone leaving smelly skid marks on it. Q: Was the smell really that bad? MIKE: YES! After it rained heavily on Friday, we had to jump over piss-puddles to get from the camping area to the stages. Actually, I accidentally jumped right in the middle of one

while wearing my canvas Vans, and had to wheel my bag through it on the way out of the grounds. ELISE: I have my suspicions that there were some nasty things lurking in the sludgy mud – it honestly smelt like faeces. Q: How are you recovering now that it’s over? MIKE: The train carriage we were in on the way home looked like a quarantine centre with everyone coughing and sneezing. And when I took a shower, the water that ran off my hair and body was grey. ELISE: I definitely got that ‘orange smell’. When I got home, my boyfriend wouldn’t come within a three metre radius of me because he said I smelled so bad. I have a really sore throat too, which I’ve heard comes from inhaling too much piss-dust.

All in an Oslo trip’s worth: Fromage, sculptures and ravenous cougars

IT’S 8 O’CLOCK in the morning. After barely three hours of sleep, the hoarse voice of a Danish woman wakes us up through the cabin’s radio – it’s time for breakfast. Reluctantly we hobble towards the 7 Seas restaurant. Last night we competed with Japanese tourists ravenous for seafood; this time, however, the buffet consists of Danish pastries, sandwiches and fruit. Malene fills her plate with food she’ll never be able to finish by herself. Her attitude reminds me of a stay I once made at an all-inclusive hotel in Turkey: my parents would be so embarrassed about going up for seconds that they would send my brother and I up to get them more food; the Danes, on the other hand, don’t seem to feel any kind of shame whatsoever. With a cinnamon roll and Rough Guide to Scandinavia in hand, we plan a route through the Norwegian capital. We strategically include parks on our route where we can sleep. This should be a fun day … Oslo, the oldest of the Nordic capitals, located between a fjord and forest, is breathtakingly beautiful. We start the day at the city’s new landmark: the Oslo Opera House. A spectacular feature of this iceberglike building is that it is possible

A little nap later, I manage to convince Malene to go to Oslo’s most famous sculpture garden. I’m easily bored by sculpture gardens, but it’s hard to imagine any human – well, apart from my travelling companion – who wouldn’t happily kill an hour or two exploring Vigeland Park, which is filled with more than 200 works sculpted by Gustav Vigeland. By then, it’s already time to go back to the ferry. With another 18-hour journey in prospect, we dine at the Blue Ribbon, a restaurant with a superb a la carte menu and a fantastic wine list. While everyone is dressed up nicely, I arrive in the shorts I’ve walked in all day. We both go for the Bornholm poulard, stuffed with sundried tomatoes, pine nuts and basil, served on a bed of pea puree with mushrooms à la crème. For dessert, I take the chocolate ice cream layer cake, while Malene goes for the assiete de fromages – the cheese plate if you please. It’s incredible how you can make every dish sound highclass in French. After finishing our bottle of house wine, we go back to our cabin. While I’ve already spent a night here, I’m still in a state of utter shock to find a bunk bed and a pullout bed I imagine prisoners would sleep on. Malene doesn’t seem to care at all and falls straight back to sleep – again. I am, however, not exactly ready to settle into the luxu-

school, and is constantly teased. After a dream about being sucked into the refrigerator, he returns to school, and ultimately becomes a hero. On an average day the shop serves six cakes of its 30 plus recipes, courtesy of the owners’ mother, a baker of some renown. The sponges are spectacularly light. Even the brunsviger, which looks doughy, has a finesse so striking its principal ingredient must be helium. The tea’s not bad either. Served in a flamboyantly wide cup, pouring the milk in is quite cinematic, like the end of Zabriskie Point and Star Wars all rolled into one. But the star of the show must be the scones. They come in plain, chocolate chip or dried fruit varieties, and it is hard to imagine having a better cream tea in this city. While the waiter kindly gave us a Tour de Plate, naming the delicious looking specialties, our mouths watered so badly we were tempted to shush him and swallow it all at once. Nothing was mediocre on this plate: the fig nice and juicy, the yoghurt with honey was topped with perfectly roasted almonds, the spicy roasted potatoes perfect with the Italian salami. SL

This was not dispelled by the couple embracing by candle light. Barely open for a few months, the bar has a much older feel, not quite old like a smoky bodega, but comfortable like one’s own living room might be. There are 600-800 titles on any given day and often they are not what you can find in the larger shops. The texture of the ice cream is unbelievable: chewy-looking and really creamy. Oh, and the hazelnut is fantastic. If you come here you’ll have no reason for excuses; you’ll not only want to reflect upon what you’re putting in your mouth, but also where it comes from. Directly traded from farms in Brazil, Ethiopia and Kenya, where the farmers set their own terms of trade, the select coffee is so good you’ll enjoy even that last cold swallow. From the fish and chip expat family nights at 17:00 on the last Friday of every month, to enjoying the Sunday roast (lamb, all the trimmings, just 99kr, kids portion for 58kr), they are always welcome. There’s live music Thursday-Sunday (22:00late), the kitchen is open from 10:00 until late every day – serving a burger meal with pint for just 120kr – the pub caters to all sports fans, there’s a pool table in their back room where you can smoke, and upstairs there’s a new lounge area, which is the perfect place to relax with a view over Strøget. If it’s company you want, you might try the main bar, or a private function, the second bar; seating-wise pull up a high chair, relax on cushioned benches or lord it as a bishop for the evening; or go genteel in the library – a great place to cheat in the fortnightly quiz, the longest running in the city. Remember to leave room for dessert as the liquorice ice cream with coffee cream and sprinkles comes highly recommended. A film that shouldn’t have seen the light of day ARUN SHARMA

HE TITLE says it all. Not in a literal sense mind you, as it has no discernible relevance to the narrative of the film, but in the sense that like the film, it is so ubiquitously stale, automated, and inane, that it really isn’t worth uttering unless you happen to be a politician or a football player, in which case your aim is to reel off as many facile platitudes as you can possibly muster in order to appease the semi-slumbering masses. As the press literature proudly boasts, The Cold Light of Day is the first English language film in thirty years to be shot entirely in Spain, and while this may initially seem strangely insignificant, it does become more pertinent as the final credits roll and one realises that this titbit is in fact the most memorable thing about the film. So, if you’re looking to be part of something historic and you weren’t around to witness the fall of the Berlin Wall, then this is your chance. Cavill arrives in sunny Spain to join his family on a sailing trip. He is greeted at the airport by his sour-faced father (Willis), and following a series of picture-perfect postcard scenes smattered with a dose of familial disharmony, we sense it won’t be long before all hell breaks loose. Our suspicions are swiftly validated after the rest of the family are kidnapped, Willis (to his son’s surprise, but not ours) turns

Henry Cavill pauses for a moment to take in the Spanish backdrop and to ponder whether he has just committed career suicide out to have been a CIA agent all along, and Cavill finds himself in inhospitable foreign territory, dodging bullets, trusting no one, and battling to free his mother and younger brother from mysterious captors. This familiar scenario, with its roots in Hitchcock and more recent incarnations including Polanski’s Frantic (1988), is conceived in order to place an ordinary person into an extraordinary and heroic situation that is intensified by serial jeopardy, thus encouraging audience empathy and engagement. However, the screenplay is so utterly predictable - with car chases, running gun battles

and some rooftop acrobatics slotted in at regular intervals - and so simply devolved from a ready-made set of generic ingredients that it renders the life-and-death issues at stake for our hard-pressed hero totally meaningless. The Cold Light of Day highlights how tricky it is to judge the line between tradition and innovation when assembling a film that has such little aspiration beyond being a standard genre entry. The director does have a grasp on the formula, but clearly lacks the confidence and conviction to bring anything new to the party,

unless there are still viewers surprised by the relatively early demise of one of the top-billed actors, or who haven’t worked out that Sigourney Weaver’s fake Hollywood smile in a business suit is a clear sign of malign intentions. Despite its poor genetic heritage, the film does at least offer a valiant attempt at sketching in a troubled father-son relationship before the carnage commences, though Cavill subsequently offers little in the way of personality to an admittedly standard-issue role. Elsewhere, director El Mechri and his DoP make the most of the Spanish locations, from

the sun-splashed white of coastal communities to the labyrinthine back streets and historic squares that make Madrid an effective setting for this kind of material. At the end of the day (another fine example of vacuous football phraseology), this bog-standard, lazy, wannabe Bourne bottom-feeder simply delivers a series of thriller clichés packaged in the blandest of manners, although for this very reason it will likely be far longer than thirty years before anyone bothers attempting to emulate it, so a rare cliché it certainly is.

ANISH PAINTER Lars Olufssen (Lindhardt) hasn’t had any success in a decade. In order to find peace and inspiration, he takes to the Canadian wilderness. When he becomes involved with the affairs of a local art school he meets amateur painter Eddie (Smith), a good natured,

but psychologically challenged, middle-aged man who, at night, goes sleep walking. Eddie the sleep walker is a little different from his alter-ego; he has a penchant for snacking on living things. At first, only rodents and small animals. Initially unaware of Eddie’s quirk, Lars agrees to house him while the authorities find a more permanent solution. With each of Eddie’s nighttime killing sprees, Lars becomes artistically aroused, discovering that he needs to witness more gore to inspire his paintings. The gloriously ridiculous premise could have been lifted directly from the Roger Corman classic ‘Bucket Of Blood’ where a disturbed outsider art-

ist accidentally breaks into ‘the scene’ by killing a cat. In order to meet escalating expectations, he has to kill again and again to satisfy an adoring art-cafe audience who lavish his ‘sculptures’ with praise. Here the art cafe is an art college and it’s Eddie who does the killing rather than the artist himself. Corman’s film was made for pennies and shot in half a week. However, of the two films, it’s ‘Eddie’ that feels rushed. I wanted to like this more than I did. While there are some absurdly funny moments, much of the dialogue falls flat. The first half rockets along so that you barely notice or care about the flaws (asides from a didactic

score, better suited to children’s TV), but by the final act there’s been a few too many narrative developments forced through in dialogue rather than driven by character. It’s also a cop-out to make a film about a painter and never show his work. Much of the art-related dialogue or direction is clumsy. The filmmakers seem woefully unfamiliar with the world they are depicting and apparently averse to even basic research. All of this laziness dilutes the charm they’ve built. The well-chosen cast are the film’s greatest asset but all are deserving of a comedy with more meat. MARK WALKER

chronicles Allen’s career from writing scripts for Sid Caesar in the 1950s to creating the starstudded Oscar-winning films we see today. You can also watch an array of stars weigh in on their favourite wacky director, including Diane Keaton, Sean Penn, Penelope Cruz and Josh Brolin. LL

Sloth Sid reaches new heights of stupidity while Jennifer Lopez does her best as a misled feline marauder. Yet even a masterly voiced Peter Dinklage as a

pirate orangutan can’t save this flick from a bad case of triteness and unremedied lack of heart.

The Lucky One (11) Dir: Scott Hicks; US drama, 2012, 101 mins; Zac Efron, Taylor Schilling, Blythe Danner The Lucky One doesn’t deliver many plot twists, and if you have seen the trailer, you basically saw the whole film. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing. You know what to expect, so you can’t claim to be disappointed by it. It’s a romantic drama, so don’t expect fireworks. DC

Dir: Rupert Sanders; UK/ US action, 2012, 127 mins; Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron, Chris Hemsworth, Sam Claflin, Ian McShane In a twist to the fairy tale, the huntsman ordered to take Snow White into the woods to kill her winds up becoming her protector and mentor in a quest to vanquish the Evil Queen. But unfortunately, this overlong retelling of a Grimm fairy tale is short on magic. MH
