AT THE FOREFRONT of Shakespeare in Denmark, Hamletscenen is an innovative danish company that facilitates the classic works with a mind to broadening their appeal for a modern audience. Operating out of offices on the beautiful and highly appropriate grounds of Elsinore’s Kronborg castle (the Bard’s setting for his play Hamlet), the second half of Hamletscenen’s summer season is about to commence with a three part program that runs through early August. All performances are in English with Danish subtitles.
As You Like It
Aug 1- Sun 5; 20.00; adm 395kr Discount: Price for people in group of 5 or more: 250kr www.billetten.dk First up is a production of the pastoral comedy romance As You Like It from the UK’s world famous Shakespeare’s Globe company. The play runs the gamut of Shakespeare’s comic trademarks; cross-dressing, slapstick tomfoolery, sharp repartee and misconstrued love notes. The company breathes new life into this beloved play after doing the same with Hamlet last year. That production was a sell out in Kronborg and Hamletscenen are confident this year is set to continue the trend. With the setting for this play traditionally being outdoors, the performance in the castle’s courtyard promises magical contributions by the seagulls and the play of light and shadow as day fades into night... You’re also allowed to bring picnics to eat before and after the show.
Hosting another world-famous company, Hamletscenen continues the high standards of their summer season with Sweden’s musical storytellers: the ‘Romeo & Julia Kören’ choir. Utilising a unique blend of drama, dance and song, the familiar Scottish tragedy is interwoven with Clément Janequin’s vocal compositions of La Guerre. Janequin serves to emphasise and underpin the soaring drama of Macbeth’s bravery, madness and ultimate destruction. The drama will again occupy the castle’s courtyard.

Sven Gade’s cult film version from 1921 stars one of silent cinema’s first sex symbols - Asta Nielsen, an internationally recognised Danish Diva of the era, in the title role. One of several revisionist versions that feature a female Hamlet, this film tells the story of a queen’s daughter, raised as a prince and determined to take over the throne in wake of war. Neilsen gives a luminous, intense performance that drives the entire film. Musical accompaniment comes in the form of booming Danish DJ Komet and Mike Sheridan who will create a live electronic soundtrack promising an arresting combination of old and new. MARK WALKER
LêLê Streetkitchen on H.C Andersens Boulevard is owned by the entrepreneurial Lê family, whose cooking from their native Vietnam has earned them not only culinary success, with three restaurants and a catering firm, but also a certain amount of media fame. In 2009 a documentary following their successes, ‘De Jyske Vietnamesere’, aired on DR2 and last year daughter Anh Lê took center stage on the cooking program ‘Spis Vietnam’. Watch her live on Saturday as she makes the perfect spring roll or perhaps the ultimate wonton. There will be heaps of activities
for both the little and large, with face-painting, table tennis, henna tattoos and a magician. Those who are looking to be entertained will not be disappointed with live music, martial arts demonstration and a dragon train all on the program. There’s also a chance for those who wish to relive their gap-year nocturnal adventures as the celebration carries on till dark, with street lanterns and a DJ-set. Nørreport’s best kept dirty little secret (martini) Out of Juice
Frederiksborggade 5, 1360 Cph K; Open Mon to Wed 16:00-02:00, Thu 16:00-03:00, Fri-Sat 16:00-04:00; Drinks prices go from 20kr, with various deals; 3393 1147, www.outofjuice.dk DON’T LET THE name of this bar deceive you. It may go by the name ‘Out of Juice’, but it is definitely not out of alcohol – it has a wide range of cocktails and even its own homemade shot. With its entrance hidden around a corner, Out of Juice is one of Nørreport’s best kept secrets, but once you’re in on the secret you’ll keep going back for more. Although the bar’s outside appearance isn’t quite inviting, and as you’re climbing up the narrow stairs you wonder what you’re getting yourself into, you’ll be glad you gave it a chance once you’re inside. The mix of simple wooden furniture and classy black couches, and the size of the petite room lit by flickering candles create a laid-back, ‘hyggelig’ ambience, which will make you feel like you’re right at home. Its location is perfect for catching up with friends and unwinding after a long day as it situated close to Nørreport

station, so it is practically on your way home. From Thursday onto the weekend, the bar becomes completely alive, packed with people from the age of 20 onwards, indicating the popularity of the place. Thursday is the bar’s busiest night according to the friendly bartender, when people like to come for predrinks before they carry on to different night clubs. One of the many attractions of the bar on a Thursday night is its unique dice deal. Throw a six and you can have a bargain you won’t be able to find anywhere else in town: you get to pay 1kr for the drink you ordered, including cocktails. There was a cocktail I had never tried, so I took the plunge and tried the Bramble cocktail. This fresh mix of gin, lemon, blackberry, Faxe Kondi and sugar appealed succulently to all my taste buds. It was a perfect balance of the sweet blackberry and sour lemon. My companion tried the Cosmopolitan, which having a fair amount of expertise in, decided was a tad too sour, but it was elegantly presented like a cocktail should be. If you’re feeling particularly adventurous, then try their very own ‘Kloakslam’
shot which they claim to be their own trademark shot. It consists of a deadly blend of crushed up bon-bon sweets (yes the very ones from BonBon-Land) and vodka. The taste is hard to explain and one that must be experienced firsthand, but if you close your eyes – and don’t look at the murky colour – then it’s not too bad. It kind of has a sweet and sour taste and it beats the classic Danish shot, Fisk, which I guess isn’t too difficult. One of my favourite things about the bar is the fact that you can sit on the window couches and stare out onto the busy street. As the bar is above ground level, it’s perfect for watching people bustling by, which my companion and I did as we chilled out with a cocktail. There’s a good mixture of music playing in the background, varying from old school ‘90s music to the latest hits which The Voice is known for playing, although on the weekends I am told it sides more with the latter to get everyone in a party mood. As well as having a choice of different cocktails, there are also seven different kinds of foreign beers for those who prefer, which include Budweiser and Hoegaarden. If you

are a cocktail lover, but sometimes find them a bit pricy, they have a good deal during the weekdays (MondayWednesday), where you can get any cocktail for 54kr until 22:00.There is also the ‘Lovetail’ if you want to share 3 cocktails for 2 with someone, which cost a bargain price of 160kr. Out of Juice also boasts the world’s biggest cocktail, the Grand Super Bowl, which contains a hefty two bottles of spirit but also costs 1000kr, so think wisely before buying it. The slush ice shots are also
very popular, and even come in cocktail flavours such as strawberry daiquiri and champagne truffle and are well worth 100kr for ten. Slush ice which tastes like cocktails and has alcohol in it –who could ask for more?! There is definitely good value for money at this bar and although it is quite a small bar, the size only amplifies the cosiness. With its welcoming atmosphere, it’s a great bar for not being too overcrowded the whole time, but crowded at the right times. Although
this bar is hidden away quite well around the corner, once you find it you’ll wonder how you haven’t seen it in front of you all along. You can get the best of both worlds here: if you want a quiet catch up with a friend then you can find a secluded spot during the week, and if you want a lively night out, then visit it from Thursdays to the weekend, and it is guaranteed to put you in a party mood.

I don’t feel a single nervous pang,” Young told Christianity Today. Young is a devout Christian, and in an interview – email, not phone – with Christianity Today, credited “faith and imagination” as the main sources of inspiration for his creativity. And as if to prove that musical inspiration knows no limits, Young lists “Chronicles of Narnia” author C S Lewis and Hubert de Givenchy, who designed clothes for Audrey Hepburn and Jackie O, as his influences on his Facebook page. “Coming up with ideas has never been a dry well for me; the real prob-

lem occurs when I must decide which road out of literally thousands I’m going to take,” Young told Christianity Today. Melodies and lyrics come easily to Young, and at the crucial moment right before a performance, it is the music that rescues him from shyness. “The music empowers me, and suddenly all the shyness and all the introverted whatever just goes away and I can just be myself and sing these songs that mean a lot to me,” he said in an interview with radio station 91.5 The Beat. The ‘Fireflies’ singer will be bring-
ing his whimsical brand of synth-pop to Lille Vega later this month. After the introvert’s breakout single became a sleeper hit on radio channels worldwide, the Owatonna, Minnesota native found himself thrust into the limelight – a big shock for the soft-spoken introvert who attributes his imaginative melodies and lyrics to growing up as an only child in a small town with a population of 20,000. Since ‘Fireflies’ exploded onto the music scene in 2009, Young has come a far way from his parents’ basement. He has travelled the world, toured with Maroon 5 and John Mayer, sold

But at the end of the day, he’s an ordinary small-town guy with a cooler-than-average job. “The gratification you get from flying across the world and playing to a sold-out room full of kids who know all your lyrics, even if they don’t speak your language, is incredible,” Young is quoted as saying on his Facebook page. “It’s those times when you stand back and say, ‘I’m just a normal guy, I can’t believe this is happening.’” SHANDANA MUFTI

The Things That Burn & Oliver Hoiness Drone; 22:00; Free adm In a word, the newly created Copenhagen four-piece have massive potential. Tapping into a diverse style that glides between grunge, psychedelic and lo-fi rock, the band yield atmospheric results that place the listener in a peculiar limbo between genres. Having just released their debut LP, which includes the single ‘Leaf ’, the band will be hosting something of a launch party that may just go on into the early hours with the ‘60s rock DJ Oliver Hoiness and his records on hand.

rum N Bass, something of a niche sub-genre within the spectrum of electronic music, more so in Denmark where it’s a rather small albeit rapidly-growing cultural movement. The last few years have seen Drum N Bass grow from being a fringe music phenomenon celebrated in musky concrete basements and in the dens and alleyways of underground Copenhagen to a genre that has become renowned for providing some of the best parties for miles around. Nowhere has this been more evident than at OHOI’s annual ‘Bas Under Buen’ party- an evening that attracts the creme de la creme of Denmark’s intimate Drum N Bass community for several hours of sheer bass and beats under the the Bispebuen motorway bridge on the outskirts of Nørrebro. One could hardly imagine a
West Weston & The Sensationals Mojo; 22:00; 90kr Credited as London’s top harmonica player, bluesman Steve ‘West’ Weston and his trio, including guitarist, Ronni Boysen, have been playing the international blues circuit since the late ‘90s. Tapping into an old style of Chicago blues – reminiscent of Muddy Waters, Little Walter and Sonny Boy – Weston’s charisma make their performances positively entertaining. Rated as one of Mojo’s most anticipated gigs this year, it could well be worth checking out.

Tonight, one of Copenhagen’s gifted jazzman, Swedish-born Bjørn Ingelstam, will be performing to spellbound audiences in the heart of the city. Bas Under Buen picked up the pieces of Roskilde under the motorway more ideal setting; five thousand plus attendees under a concrete bridge, with the dipping summer sun flickering on the horizon. This year’s event was a mammoth occasion that topped all previous ‘Bas Under Buen’ parties. I got to Bispuebuen rather late into the proceedings, and found myself surrounded by masses of smiling, dancing revelers who at the time were being steered through the heftier, more down-tempo sounds towards the
dub-end of the electronic music genre. As the sun set to the East of the motorway, the music got a tad commercial as the likes of Guns n Roses anthemic number ‘sweet child of mine’ and a tacky remix of Rae Jepsens overplayed and overrated ‘Call me maybe’ reverberated off the concrete roof of the motorway. This didn’t really stir things up that much, though it did help accommodate the musical interests of some of the crowd.

Kurt Vile Pumpehuset; 21:00; 175kr Philadelphia-raised singer-songwriter Kurt Vile has listeners captivated with his romantic contemporary folk music. His most recent EP, Smoke Ring For My Halo (2011), is a profoundly meditative record layered with poetic musings, sombre instrumentation, and signs of a legendary songsmith in the making. Having quietly crept onto the folk scene in recent years, Kurt Vile has become one of the greatest singers of his generation, and it’s assured that this will be reflected in the ticket sales – so be sure to act fast.
Jonny Lang Amager Bio; 20:00; 300 kr Youthful guitarist Jonny Lang was the brainchild behind the bluesy rock album, Lie To Me (1997). In addition to creating a minor stir in the US among blues fans, Lang proved unusually popular – especially given that the record sprung from the mind of a 15-year old boy. Generally speaking, 15 year olds in the record industry merely sing along to manufactured beats – think Aaron Carter, Justin Beiber and Miley Cyrus. Lie To Me was the antithesis to this trend, and Lang matured with his music, releasing several records during the ‘00s.
Dirty Days of Summer: Eyehategod Amager Bio 20:00; 150kr or 350kr (4-day pass) Kicking off the rough-and-ready Copenhagen-based rock, grunge and grindcore music festival, New Orleans metal outfit Dirty Days of Summer will take to the stage with their fusion of heavily industrial sludge-metal and potent aggression. Extremely raw and unapologetically heavy, their bold style of grind-core has been credited as typifying both the best and worst aspects of the genre. Having played at this year’s acclaimed metal festival Hellfest in France, as well as making appearances on some of the world’s biggest stages, including Roskilde Festival and dates in Japan, they’re a major act at this year’s Dirty Days of Summer. Daniel van der Noon
Personally I was a bit bemused about it all, and as such it was a relief when underground ragga/ dancehall boys Maffi, Klumben, Top Gunn, Sukker Lyn and the revolutionary Mighty Mala came on to put on the best half an hour or so of the evening’s entertainment. Well-rehearsed live versions of epic contra-mainstream culture tunes such as the emphatic, up-front “Du en lort” seemed to get the crowd raving and dancing, rattling through the warm evening air with a vengeance. The show ended at eleven o’clock sharp, finishing off with some of the wildest Drum N Bass tunes for miles around as the likes of Pendulum’s peerless track “Tarantula” caused quite a bit of pandemonium. For many Roskilde festival attendees, Saturday’s shenanigans under the Bispebuen motorway were the perfect antidote to the post-Roskilde blues. Judging from the crowds reaction to it all, it would appear that Drum N Bass continues to cement its status in the landscape of the Danish clubland, proving itself as a genre to be reckoned with. TOP 5 SURVIVAL TIPS CYCLE LANES Look out for the cycle lanes. They’re everywhere, and not pavements, particularly around Tivoli.
TIVOLI RESTAURANTS Choose carefully because while Tivoli is worth a visit, it has some of the worst restaurants in town.
SHOP OPENING TIMES Most shops are closed on Sunday, unless it’s the first or the last of the month. And they stop selling alcohol in the supermarkets (hold on to your empties as each bottle is worth a krone - enough to buy half a plastic bag) at 17:00 on Saturdays.
CYCLING Use lights when dark, stay off the pavement, and don’t run red lights. All three will land you a hefty fine.
DANGERS Don’t worry about the beggars and druggies. They’re harmless. Avoid places with biker affinities. Walk down Istedgade on the right (from the central station) and you will be propositioned.

SUMMER HOLIDAYS ABROAD InOut | THE CPH POST ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE
27 July- August 2 2012
Fivelements, Puri Ahimsa; Br. Baturning, Desa Mambal, Abiansemal, Bali, Indonesia +62 361 469206; contact@fivelements.org; www. fivelements.org WHILE WORKING AT a publisher of Asian studies, I often heard the name Mads Lange. As history tells us, the Danes got around, and Mads was no exception. He did his job of 19th century mediating between the Rajas and the Dutch so thoroughly that he earned the title ‘King of Bali.’ This Danish trader and peacemaker pleads guilty to another exploit Scandinavian explorers have been accused of: stealing local woman. Judging from his photo, he must have had his pick of the ladies right? He fathered children with two women and still found time to add Bali’s rice and spices to the trade route. His grave is South of Ubud, close to where I am headed. To get there, I don’t navigate the seas like Mads, but rather arrive in a big bird with wine onboard. After an hour’s drive through villages and rice fields, I am ecstatic to hear that the first treatment on the scheduled retreat starts in 15 minutes – a Balinese Boreh. Fatigue and vertigo prevent me from asking what that is, but the smell of incense and the sound of the rushing Ayung River convince me it will be glorious. Birds chirp and a lizard scurries by, as the practitioner dips my toes into a footbath accompanied by a cucumber-infused glass of water. Next, the perfect amount of pressure works out tensions during a deep tissue massage, and the coffee and cinnamon body scrub afterwards makes my skin glow. The finale is a warm bath in a large stone tub (there is one in each private room facing the river) filled with tropical flowers that cling to the skin as if
to say ‘please don’t go!’ First impressions? I can’t count how many times I think, ‘This couldn’t be any better.’ Surrounded by jungle, Fivelements covers over 2009sqm of attentively designed landscape based on the ancient Balinese science of construction called ‘Mandala Nawa Sanga.’ Put simply, the focus is on directional alignments and how constructions blend into nature using eco-conscious principles. The seven highceilinged, straw-roofed suites encompass a rustic open-air concept. Sliding doors and a bamboo wall separate the room from an outdoor shower and toilet. Sacred sites such as the healing village, the mandala spaces for yoga, martial arts, and dance as well as the pools, remind guests to nurture mind, body and spirit. This expounds on two traditional Balinese philosophies: Tri Hita Karana, honouring people, nature and God and Tri Kaya Parisudha, pure thoughts, speech and actions (the latter being the name of the 5 day detox transformation I am on, so I’ll try to keep it clean). Of the different retreats is also Panca Mahabhuta for replenishment and ‘Finding Centre’ to explore pottery and yoga. A key part of these retreats is that due to purifying treatments and the beneficial ‘living food’ concept, emotional and physical shifts are almost inevitable. Some are subtle; however, according to the guests’ comments, it is life-changing for many. This centre is filled with highly skilled professionals who offer nurturing specialization. A consultation with the program organizer allows revisions to the health form (sent long before arrival) as it seems, while you unclutter your mind, a myriad of highs and lows appear. During my stay, I experience fits of ecstasy, waves of nausea, a few tears and a lot of laughs – this is not on the brochure!

Satisfy your inner sanctity while being pampered at the Fiveelements, the zenith of leisure and purification Among the recent wave of unconventional spas springing up around the world, Fivelements stands out for its authenticity. One noteworthy ritual held at the centre’s temple is the water blessing ceremony. They warn me it will be cold, but I am warmed by Sanskrit chanting and the ringing of a small bell. That does not last – it is cold, yet walking back to my room in my sopping wet sarong, I feel energized, renewed and ready for whatever comes next. What comes next is a handsome, young, yoga instructor with the posture of a marine who takes me through a
flowing sequence. The private session ends with him guiding my limbs through a Tai Chi-style stretch that throws me into bliss, so of course I laugh when he says, ‘Now time for relaxation.’ A short closing meditation and I’m off to a breakfast of yogurt and goji berries. The week flies by filled with bodywork, massage, colonic hydrotherapy, Somatic (dialogue and movement) and water healing (please try this – it will move you in more ways than one), and oh yeah, did I mention the award-winning food? Ultimately, the remote location ena-

Food & Drink Tante T Viktoriagade 6, 1655 Cph V; Mon-Sat 10:00-22:00, Sun 10:00-21:00; 3210 3610; www. tante-t.dk At everybody’s favourite Vesterbro auntie, few can resist sampling the cheery, old days atmosphere and the finest cakes in the city. On an average day the shop serves six cakes of its 30 plus recipes, courtesy of the owners’ mother, a baker of some renown. The sponges are spectacularly light. Even the brunsviger, which looks doughy, has a finesse so striking its principal ingredient must be helium. The tea’s not bad either. Served in a flamboyantly wide cup, pouring the milk in is quite cinematic, like the end of Zabriskie Point and Star Wars all rolled into one. But the star of the show must be the scones. They come in plain, chocolate chip or dried fruit varieties, and it is hard to imagine having a better cream tea in this city. BH Cornish Pasty House Studiestræde 8; 1455 Cph K; 3313 2103; www.cornishpastyhouse.dk The pasties are shipped directly from their birthplace in Cornwall, England’s wild southwestern tip, and baked in the shop ovens before serving. This was not dispelled by the couple embracing by candle light. Barely open for a few months, the bar has a much older feel, not quite old like a smoky bodega, but comfortable like one’s own living room might be. Mild in novelty, measured in ambition
La Délicatesse (7)
Dir: David Foenkinos, Stéphane Foenkinos; FR Romance, 2012, 108 mins; Audrey Tautou, Francois Damiens, Pio Maraï, Joséphone de Meaux
Premieres July 26 Playing nationwide
M
EASURED. This is the one word that easily steps into my head when attempting to describe Stéphane and David Foenkinos’s La Déli-
catesse. Measured, because it seems that these rookie directors did their best not to overdo it; a perilous endeavour when it comes to the popular genre that is ‘romantic comedy’, particularly so in France. It is precisely this that constitutes both the strength and the weakness of this motion picture. The Foenkinos brothers have tried to put forward a romantic that stands out, and they partly succeeded. What might appear as a classic boy-meets-girl story quickly takes a sharp and truly unexpected turn: no more than ten minutes into the movie the initial blissful existence of Nathalie (Tautou) and François (Marmaï) is torn apart by the latter’s sudden death in a traffic accident (you needn’t worry, this is no spoiler). The great remainder of the story then revolves around Nathalie’s grief and her precarious and awkward road to recovery. The solution to her troubles could come in the most unexpected of shapes; enter the gauche, Swedish baldy named Markus (François Damiens). No attempt is made to hijack viewers’ emotions through Nathalie’s grief. By placing the tragic element at the start of the movie, the directors purposefully avoided the trap in which some of their predecessors – namely Guillaume Canet in France’s last major export of the kind, Little White Lies (2010) – have fallen before. There is no cathartic effusion of depressing, moralistic and (hopefully) contagious sadness in La Délicatesse. Here, a woman’s grief is told
François Damiens seems stunned in disbelief at the prospect of being in close proximity to the delicacy that is Audrey Tautou with a very light touch, and a decent dose of humour, making this – once again – a measured, digestible approach. So much so that it sometimes passes of as too light, and some might take offense precisely to how lightly the movie treats issues no less shameful than sexual harassment in the workplace. Equally mild is the surprisingly and refreshingly limited use of the background location, which is none other than Le Gai Paris. This is said as praise to both David and Stéphane Foenkinos: they manage to avoid using the French capital as the clichéd
city of love, élan and whatnot; only one failed love scene takes place within sight of the Eiffel tower and, for that matter, the real crux of the story unfolds in rural locations outside the city. Other noteworthy elements include the motion picture’s soundtrack, which breathes new life into the use of xylophones, used to the death since the time of Amélie. An unexpectedly good Émilie Simon calmly sways the viewer into comfort and cosiness; a perfect match to the calm nature of the story. Yet this inherent mildness also
backfires. Characters are not particularly vibrant and do not seem to have much more life in them than the sheer and limited setting the directors allocated them. Some actors, such as the excellent Joséphone de Meaux who plays Nathalie’s best friend, are criminally underused, their appearances downplayed to quasi-cameo proportions, while the main characters are but superficially approached and developed. The actors’ performances reflect the movie: above average, but not outstanding. Tautou is her usual self, looking confused and exhausted
most of the time (her signature facial expression), but still managing to pull off the odd smiling scene or the – at the risk of overdoing it – measured nervous breakdown. Damiens, on the other hand, gives a fine performance with a knack for comedic timing. All in all, La Délicatesse is an inviting movie which Danes will no doubt appreciate for regularly poking fun at the Swedes. It’s a good strategy for a first date. Yet, it might not hurt to have something planned for later, just in case. FRANCISCO PEREZ

Book Your Tickets The Dark Knight Rises (11) Dir: Christopher Nolan; US action, 2012, 165 mins, Christian Bale, Tom, Hardy, Gary Oldman, Marion Cotillard, Anne Hathaway With the arrival of Bane (Hardy), a terrorist hell bent on ‘liberating’ Gotham before reducing it to rubble, Batman (Bale) is forced out of exile to once take on the role as Gotham’s Dark Knight. Nolan retains the delicate balance of building a credible reality while remaining respectful to the comic book origins, and as he departs from the Batman franchise he leaves his reputation as a master filmmaker and the general state of comic book cinema in the best shape they’ve ever been. When Martha (Olsen) escapes from a hippie cult and finds her way back to her sister, her recovery is neither simple nor swift. It will leave you questioning the level of manipulation we all tolerate in our everyday lives. MW
Woody Allen: A Documentary Dir: Robert B Weide; US doc, 2012, 113 mins; Woody Allen, Antonio Banderas, John Cusack, Penelope Cruz, Larry David If you love Woody Allen, this is a must-see. If you don’t love Woody Allen, see it anyway. This entertaining documentary chronicles Allen’s career from writing scripts for Sid Caesar in the 1950s to creating the starstudded Oscar-winning films we see today. You can also watch an array of stars weigh in on their favourite wacky director, including Diane Keaton, Sean Penn, Penelope Cruz and Josh Brolin. LL
21 Jump Street (11) Dir: Phil Lord & Christopher Miller; US action/comedy, 2012, 109 mins; Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum, Brie Larson, Dave Franco 21 Jump Street is instantly one of my top all-time favourite comedies (though I rank Office Space up there as well so take that as you will). There were numerous LOL moments, some great cameos and a refreshing ability to laugh at its own silliness. KE
Avoid like the Plague The Cold Light of Day (15) Dir: Mabrouk El Mechri; US thriller, 2011, 93 mins; Henry Cavill, Sigourney Weaver, Bruce Willis, Veronica Echegui This bog-standard, lazy, wannabe Bourne bottom-feeder’s only surprise might be the relatively early demise of one of the top-billed actors. Otherwise it simply delivers a series of thriller clichés packaged in the blandest of manners. AS
LOL (3) Dir: Lisa Azuelos; US comedy, 2012, 97 mins; Miley Cyrus, Demi Moore, Ashley Greene, Adam Sevani If a film begins with an American teenager talking about her high school and walking out in slow-motion, arm in arm with her bffs – you can put your expectations to rest. This flick has nothing new to offer, whether it’s teenage broken hearts, hooking up in summer camp, a battle of the bands, school trips to Paris, parties and pot. MH
Also Playing Weekend (11) Dir: Andrew Haigh; UK drama, 2011, 96 mins; Tom Cullen, Chris New, Jonathan Race, Laura Freeman Andrew Haigh’s second feature moves away from the potential
pigeon-holing of gay-themed cinema and towards a universal terrain of desire, hope and disappointment. It occasionally edges towards the clichés of romantic comedy, however the director deftly steers clear of a crowd-pleasing easy-option resolution, and keeps the film rooted in a reality that squarely and knowingly avoids being larger than life and instead focuses on the quirks and textures of contemporary British life. AS
Free the Mind (11) Dir: Phie Ambo; DK doc, 2012, 82 mins; Richard Davidson Danish documentary following Dr Richard Davidson, the world’s leading brain scientist, as he attempts to teach three traumatised individuals how to change their personality through meditation. Thought-provoking with shining moments, though a scattered focus makes it too messy to fully enjoy. LL
Reindeerspotting: Escape From Santaland Dir: Joonas Neuvonen ; FI doc, 2011, 84 mins; Jani Raappana Joonas Neuvonen’s debut documentary follows Jani, a 19-yearold addict and small-time thief from Lapland, Northern Finland. Neuvonen is masterful behind the camera, intercutting spellbinding shots of snowlaced landscapes with intimate close-ups of Jani’s drug abuse. The addict story may be one told many times before, but even if you don’t remember Jani, you won’t forget the sight of a reindeer race at twilight. LL

Eddie: the Sleepwalking Cannibal (15)
Here’s a Spider-Man the girls will actually want to sleep with! LD
Dir: Boris Rodriquez; DK/ CA comedy/horror, 2012, 90 mins; Thure Lindhart, Georgina Reilly, Stephen McHattie Painter Lars Olufssen (Lindhart) takes to the Canadian wilderness to find his inspiration. Watch as he becomes artistically aroused by his sleep-walking roommate’s cannibalistic activities. This Danish-Canadian, horror-comedy amalgamation has some absurdly funny moments, but secondrate dialogue and a flimsy plot turn turns this could-be stellar flick into an average one. MW
Snow White and the Huntsman (11)
Prometheus (15)
The Dictator (11)
Dir: Ridley Scott; US sci-fi, 2012, 126 mins; Michael Fassbender, Noomi Rapace, Charlize Theron, Idres Elba, Guy Pearce There are some decent moments of horror and tension. There are also planet-sized plot holes and moments of ham-fisted stupidity. With the recent announcement that Ridley is returning to that other sci-fi masterpiece, Blade Runner, there’s a sense that in his twilight years he’s riding the coattails of his past success. MW
Dir: Larry Charles; US comedy, 2012, 83 mins; Sacha Baron Cohen, Anna Faris, Ben Kingsley, John C Reilly Cohen’s fans will recall the tepid disappointment of Ali G: Indahouse. The Dictator shares the fiction approach of that film and confirms the superiority of Cohen’s fiction/ documentery hybrids over these pure fictions. Genuinely funny moments are too few, and almost all of those aren’t politicised. MW
The Amazing Spider-Man (11)
Dir: Gary Ross; US sci-fi, 2012, 142 mins; Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson Ross has successfully dissected and expanded the book and produced something that works as a film – so long as you’re not too precious about its origins. MH
Dir: Marc Webb; US action, 2012, 136 mins; Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Martin Sheen, Sally Field Webb’s reinterpretation of Spider-Man is a little premature, but the movie holds its own with a fresh script and a talented cast.
Dir: Rupert Sanders; UK/ US action, 2012, 127 mins; Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron, Chris Hemsworth, Sam Claflin, Ian McShane In a twist to the fairy tale, the huntsman ordered to take Snow White into the woods to kill her winds up becoming her protector and mentor in a quest to vanquish the Evil Queen. But unfortunately, this overlong retelling of a Grimm fairy tale is short on magic. MH
