SOMETIMES things are not what they seem. Since 2009, The Copenhagen Post has been based in Kødbyen. Like any establishment, it has an address, and until recently, that’s all it was to me: a number and street name that I could never remember how to spell. And then one day, I had a closer look, and no, I wasn’t on LSD. Slagtehusgade 4-6 … err, that’s Slaughterhouse Road, how cool is that (our office still has the pillars that are customary in most abattoirs), I thought, we’ve got an address straight out of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Chuckling at the thought of Leatherface coming in to complain about the absence of a livestock page and to chop our chief executive, I look at the numbers. Four to six, four to six and in between … five. Slaughterhouse Five! For nearly three years I’ve been working at a Kurt Vonnegut novel and never even noticed! Now visitors to this week-
end’s Trailerpark Festival (see G6) might be expecting music from Eminem, lectures on the rise of the Chatham chav, and seminars on impregnating tweens, but they will be disappointed. It transpires, we found out this week, that the underground music festival got its name because the founder happened to be living in a trailer at the time. Trailerparks? In Denmark? Maybe she was a groupie. While visitors to the Zulu Comedy Festival (see G2) might be expecting spears and warriors accompanying the best comedy South Africa’s fourth biggest demographic has to offer. Or at the very least, a homage to Michael Caine and how one of the greatest ever film careers hinged on the American casting director presuming the 30-year-old unknown, who had originally wanted to play the cockney corporal, would drop his Elephant & Castle accent when portraying an army officer. But Black Swan Lake (see G3) is exactly what it says on the tin. It’s a couple of black geezers performing a ballet. It’s what Black Swan could have been if only Darren Aronofsky had embraced his inner brother and recast Pam Grier in the lead role. Now I would have paid decent money to see Foxy Brown kick those ballet bitches’ asses.
Joe Bor, Kevin Hart and Laurence Clark ... no, we’re not favouring the boys, that’s just the way it goes this year. If you don’t like it, rent out Sex in the City
Zulu Comedy Festival
Various venues in Cph; starts Fri, ends Sep 9; www.comedyfestival.zulu.dk THE ZULU COMEDY FESTIVAL is coming back to Copenhagen for ten days of comic relief from Friday. Last year’s festival offered a dramatic increase in English performances from the previous two years, and this year Zulu promises an even broader English-language ticket, as each day of the festival hosts two Anglo shows, featuring both Danish and international comedians. For English-speakers looking to get their dose of stand-up comedy while in Copenhagen, the Zulu Comedy Festival is the opportunity you’ve been waiting for. For an easy-to-browse catalogue of the Englishspeaking events, log onto Facebook and search for ‘English speaking comedy in Copenhagen’. All of the events are easily found in – you guessed it – the ‘Events’ section. TOP PICKS:

Is ballet the new black? Copenhagen Art Festival
Dansehallerne, Pasteursvej 1424, Cph V; starts Wed, ends Sep 8, perfromances Wed 11:00, Thu & Sep 7, 19:00, Sep 8, 15:00; tickets: 130kr; www.phanatix.net IF YOU BOUGHT your ticket to Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan in the hope to see a blacksploitation movie starring Pam Grier, only to sit through the crazy antics of undernourished white girls with mommy issues, then Dansehallerne’s Black Swan Lake might be what you were hoping for. Ballet and hip-hop might not share the stage all too often, but Scandinavian break dance champions Phanatix are now bringing their very own brand of funky ballet to Vesterbro. If their aim was to keep their audience guessing, then these guys have hit the jackpot with a title that, when googled, shows countless pictures of a near-naked Natalie Portman and endless videos of Russian ballet companies. This only leaves us to speculate what their rendition might hold, and to which extent it will follow the original Swan Lake plot. Will Princess Odette become a Prince Odetto, Odile an O-Diddy? Describing themselves as a hip-hop collective from the ‘old school’, the ‘new school’ and the ‘next school’, these progressive dance scholars have been winning

awards all over the continent since their establishment in 1993. As two-time Scandinavian champions, two-time Swedish champions, Scandinavian-Baltic Champions and second place in UK open championships – these guys undoubtedly know their hip-hop.
Come Wednesday, however, two of Phanatix’s most accomplished stars will be tackling a whole different type of school – that of classical ballet. Temu Bacot and Phax Ahamada tell the story of a dancer given perhaps his last chance – an audition for Tchai-
kovsky’s iconic Swan Lake, possibly the most recognisable ballet on earth. The evening will undoubtedly feature accomplished and innovative dance, but expect comedy and laughs as well – the promotional clip is a one minute long affair fea-
turing a pair of white Hush Puppy loafers (worn by funk dancers and geriatric Casanovas alike), a pink fedora hat (just don’t leave it on the bed) and a tutu that looks like a hip-hop jockstrap, alongside a picture of the two performers looking like a Boyz II Men tribute band.
Whether you’re a b-boy or a languid prima donna princess of the stage, come and experience the two worlds collide with a bang of explosive dance. Either way, a black swan is an exceptionally rare event – don’t miss it.

The Dum Dum Girls
Lille Vega Enghavevej 40, Cph V Monday 20:00; Tickets 340kr

USIC IS A mirror reflecting the inner complexities of the musician who brought it to life. In the case of the Dum Dum Girls, it is a tunnel, leading to a cave where deeper and darker memories morph into enraged guitar riffs, emotionally loaded lyrics, and explosive rhythms echoing as if recorded in a garage.
The path of the American all-female foursome is jam-packed with the vicissitudes experienced by their front woman, songwriter and lead vocalist Kristin Gundred – who is known as Dee Dee. The mood and tempo of each of the band’s EPs or albums is pegged to the Berkeley native’s mood-swings and hardships. I will be (2010), Dum Dum’s first studio album, was heavily influenced by Gundred’s bereavement when she lost her mother to cancer. Restless and powerless, Dee Dee ushered in a lo-fi powerhouse of angry rhythms, resounding guitars and fast-paced singing. It is simply in her character.
“I like it when skies are grey, when it rains, when things change and you have to adapt from one day to the next,” she told French magazine Les Inrockuptibles back in 2010. “I hate it when life is static.” But not even the strongest minds can keep up that kind of tempo forever and, as the touring increased and distance grew between Gundred and her loved ones, the tone of Dum Dum’s music shifted. The restlessness simmered down and the anger faded as melancholic lyrics took over on the band’s second album, Only In Dreams (2011).
In it, the garagesque echo that long hid the depth of Dee Dee’s lyrics gave way to the singer’s unhindered vocal talent, free of the rhythmic shackles that once impeded it from fully expressing her emotional distress. However, the eased tone of this new opus has not deterred the band away from its original mission: delivering the darkest possible noise pop, often bordering on the punk rock that so heavily influences Gundred. The mere name of her band, after all, is a portmanteau of alternative rock band The Vaselines’ album Dum Dum, and Iggy Pop’s ‘Dum Dum Boys’ song. It is in
the band’s DNA to strive for the noisy and intense, despite the newly-soothed intonation they have adopted. Dum Dum’s latest EP, End of Daze (2012), clearly reflects this paradox – one that will surely make for a splendid performance in the darker, almost intimate ambience of the Lille Vega concert hall. “Our music is better expressed in a dark, almost underground kind of location”, Dee Dee told the media at the Lollapalooza Festival early this month. Punk rock purists and noisy riffs lovers, you are in for a treat. FRANCISCO PEREZ

CPH World Music Festival: Hérö & The Sexican & Jah Turban
Rust; 22:00; 40kr The show kicks off with the Balkan quartet Hérö who create high-energy jazz-hip-hop led by the instruments of the Eastern Bloc. Dynamic stage performers, the band are renowned for putting on a good show and getting the dancefloor moving. From there, the Jamaican singer and master of ceremonies, Jah Turban, will switch the genre to reggae. This is one of many gigs going on throughout the week as part of Copenhagen’s growing World Music Festival – see www. cphworld.dk for further details.
Preview Trailerpark Festival
Copenhagen Skatepark, Enghavevej 80-82, Cph SV; starts Fri, ends Sun; Tickets: 150kr (one-day) 300kr (three-day pass), www.billetto.dk; www. trailerparkfestival.com
F
OR THE sixth year running, the one and only Trailerpark Festival will lay on three days of innovative underground music and art. Just a stone’s throw away from the redbrick Vestre Prison, 60 Danish and international music acts will be rocking the jailhouse at the Copenhagen Skatepark this weekend. Trailerpark – so-called because its founder Carla Cammilla Hjort (Art Rebels) was actually living in a trailer when she conceived the festival – dates back to the summer of 2007 when it was a party for just a few hundred people in an empty building in Copenhagen. Since then, the festival has expanded year by year, culminating in 2011’s magnificent extravaganza, which featured an impressive 90 music acts and 80 artists on the Trailerpark bill.
Reggaeton Night
Lille Vega; 21:00; 180kr Returning to the humble roots of the fiery mix of Latin and Caribbean music, you can expect to hear something a little bit more original than Shakira’s latest single – a cheap, polished brand of the rhythmic genre. Welcoming to the fore a stack of acts – including Los Mestizos de Cuba, Fa2w0 and Camilo + Grandanéz – tonight’s gig will be a little different to what usually goes on under Vega’s roof. To add to the mix, there will also be an after-party led by the Cuban Culture Club at Club Mango.
Lady GaGa
Parken; 20:00; 445-595kr The Grammy-winning pop singer has been the centre of media attention since her rise to stardom, and with a number of blockbuster hits behind her, she’s become one of the world’s most famous music acts. Currently in the middle of her The Monster Ball world tour, it’s been on the end of rave reviews: each concert throwing up another surprise to better the last. Surprisingly, the newly rejuvenated British glam-rock group The Darkness will be supporting Lady GaGa on the European leg of her tour.
Trailerpark is the place to catch the artists of the future – a chance to say that you were there before they made it big. Over the years, bands like Vinnie Who, Oh Land, Sleep Party People, and Trentemøller have given festivalgoers a tantalising glimpse of what to expect over the coming years. The line-ups have traditionally been a mix of Danish and international acts, with a focus on electronic, urban and indie music. Trailerpark is also an art festival, so expect to see a total transformation of the skatepark area, which will be adorned with one-off works of art produced especially for the weekend, while old trailers will become otherworldly hangout places for the festival guests
Casiokids Royal Stage; Sat 23:15 Norwegian band Casiokids know how to party. They broke through to the mainstream in 2010 with their electro-pop smash hit ‘Fot I hose’. On Saturday, an enthralled audience will be grooving to their irresistibly danceable tunes.

Christian Hjelm Royal Stage; Fri 20:00 Singer-songwriter Christian Hjelm is best known as the frontman of Danish indie group The Figurines. If his wonderful debut single, ‘Scenen skifter nu’, is anything to go by, we are in for a real treat on Friday when he gives us a sneak preview of his new album, which is due out on 3 September.
Hooray For Earth Royal Stage; Fri 21:30 New York-based Hooray For Earth’s Friday show will be the band’s first concert on Danish soil. Check out the video for ‘True Loves’ and you’ll get an idea of why the swirling psych-pop of this busy touring band has received international acclaim.
Waldo & Marsha Royal Stage; Sun 19:30 Don’t miss Danish eight-piece Waldo & Marsha with their ‘90s-inspired massive soundwall of distorted guitars and synthesisers. ‘Made you’ is a true songwriting gem, and their concert promises to be one of the festival highlights.
Two Italian Masters: Gianluigi Trovesi + Gianni Coscia
Jazzhus Montmartre; 20:00; 275kr Hailed as two of Italy’s finest fiddlers – clarinetist Troversi and accordionist, Coscia – the jazz veterans have performed at some of the most prestigious venues in Europe during careers that have spanned almost four decades. Tapping into Italy’s folkloric roots, their classical brand of jazz captures the essence of Italy’s artistic foundations. It’s sure to wow Copenhagen’s jazz community. There will also be a repeat performance on the following evening – see www. jazzhusmontmartre.dk for further details and table bookings. Ice Cream Cathedral Royal Stage; Sat 18:45 In their own words, the melodic Danish band Ice Cream Cathedral play lo-fi ghostpop with an occult retro mood! Their live performances have received rave reviews – this is a band that won’t need backing tracks to stir and stimulate the audience on Saturday. Robot Koch Rebel stage; Sat 21:00 Robot Koch from Germany has turned heads everywhere. The BBC said it “sounds like artificial intelligence discovering religion” and Crack magazine said that “if, in some distant future, robots will make folk music, this is what it would sound like”. The Eclectic Moniker Royal Stage; Sun 21:30 The Eclectic Moniker have had a tremendous year, garnering rave reviews at Roskilde and producing one of the most played singles on Danish radio. It’s a curious mix of calypso, folk and alternative pop that is sure to put a smile on your face on Sunday night. PETE STREADER
Wovenhand
Lille Vega; 21:00; 175kr Led by their curiously popular visionary frontman, David Eugene Edwards, the melancholic folk group Wovenhand are credited with coining a gamechanging style of sophisticated, theatrical and emotionally-taxing style of folk-rock. Sculpting disquieting soundscapes with powerful lyrics and a climactic instrumentation, they’ve interestingly been compared to the forefathers of mordant folk-rock, Nick Cave and the Black Seeds. With a new album to add to their bulging discography, Black of the Ink (2012), fans will be sure to pack out the smaller Vega.

Loppen; 21:00; 80kr The all-lesbian band’s music has been rightly dubbed as ‘music for maniacs’. A bizarre fusion of salsa-pop, Brazilian punk, new wave rock and heavy metal, the Mexican-Argentine group are the Americas version of the Balkans’ Gogol Bordello. Picking off native musical elements almost at random, their music is an energetic, chintzy and carnivale-tasting brand of rock. They also get up to some quite entertaining projects, like changing the lyrics of Madonna’s ‘Isla Bonita’ to suit their own sexuality. DANIEL VAN DER NOON
to be a full house by midnight. With a number of up-and-coming DJs hailing from Copenhagen also in the line-up, tonight will be a mish-mash of hip-hop and rap sets. In the heart of Nørrebro, Rust’s Heat club – especially with the big names playing sets this week – will gather a big crowd, so if you’re out for the night, be sure to pop your head around the corner.
Sound of Berghain: Marcel Dettmann
Culture Box; Sat 23:00; 70kr While Kødbyen attracts its fair share of big name Danish DJs, if it’s international talent that you’re looking for, then Culture Box is the place to go. Tonight is the monthly label night by the Berlin-based Ostgut Ton, which pulls in some of the German capital’s finest house and techno names. Taking the lead tonight will be the raw beats of Dettmann, one of the label’s longest-serving artists, who’s made a name for himself with his distinctively jagged mixes.

Ever since he was old enough to put dirt in his mouth, Erik B Duckert has been attracted to the ground level and below. The attraction of the underground, he says, is that: “When you’re looking at a city from its gutters, you see both the faeces and the silk.” His favourite sewers are those of Copenhagen and in particular those of Nørrebro and Amager, but any place where trash is tossed and skirts are worn, he will want to rest his eyes and say his piece.
GOING UNDERGROUND
Death of fashion RUNWAYS, fabrics and tinderstick models occupied the city during Copenhagen Fashion Week. That’s tradition. At the last show I went to, I noticed something eerie, something I had previously overlooked. Now, my proclamation of the death of fashion is not tied to this particular show, which by the way was pretty much like all the rest; even the ‘crazy’ decision to serve lukewarm beer in a can instead of cocktails or champagne was not exactly outstanding – it’s hip to play poor, nothing original about that (just disappointing). The headline ‘Death of fashion’ doesn’t actually refer to ‘fashion’ shows - they just inspired the thought. Rather it is directed to the primordial aim of fashion: to cover the hairy, smelly surface of the human body with unearthly beauty and symbols of power and status. Because something central has changed in that particular context. The very body of the human being has changed. As I stood there, in the midst of all the other bodies lined up alongside the catwalk, it hit me (just like the look Magnum hits Mugatu with at the end scene of Zoolander). I noticed they weren’t really there. They were online. All the spectators were watching the show through the ‘hyperreflection’ of a digital screen, beaming the imagery directly onto their virtual alter egos – an alter ego apparently of much greater importance than the naked perception of reality. The physical bodies of my fellow spectators had become mere in-

struments, driven like zombies towards the next spectacle to devour through digitalisation. That’s why fashion is dead. It has been detached from the very body it came here to cover up, empower and coexist with. The surface of ‘the human body’ is not just made of flesh and bone anymore. It’s gone digital. And all the former awe and immediate beauty of fashion design has become a distant second or tertiary objective of desire 2.0. In a magic mirror world soaked in the false light of electrified crystals, reflective glory seems to be the new black. And the latest collection will be judged not on its beauty or texture, but its potential to arouse the attention of a virtual body without limbs. When the show ended, nobody appeared to notice their former absence from immediate reality. People just lowered the screens chest high and began oozing around amongst the surrounding faces, scanning with an attentive stare and murmuring in a low zombielike voice: “Celeeebs! Celeeebs!?” Fortunately I had nothing to offer them – except another voice in the choir. THE ECCO WALKATHON is a great family event that offers an insight into healthy living combined with a lot of fun activities for both young and old. On Sunday, Countess Alexandra together with her two sons, Prince Nikolai and Prince Felix, opened the 6km route, while Denmark’s health guru Chris MacDonald set off the 10km walkers. “It is so important that ECCO runs events like the ECCO Walkathon, where a healthy and active lifestyle is in focus, and inspire people to show how you can exercise during a busy daily life,” said MacDonald. Health and exercise are a focal point at the event, and along the routes it was possible to try out different sports-related activities for the children with instructors from DGI. Participants could also preorder a healthy packed lunch from Danish restaurant chain Cofoco and dieticians from the Danish Heart Foundation. I was invited along by ECCO as a representative of healthy and active living, and I had a great day at the event where I walked the 6km with my sister and my little nephew. As a dietician, many people ask for my advice on health and nutrition, and simply signing up to an event like this offers a perfect way to incorporate exercise and healthy eating into your life, whilst enjoying a great day out for the whole family. Many families walked with prams and strollers, and the youngsters were kept amused by Kristian and Katrine, the well-known Danish TV presenters from DR children’s show ‘Lille Nørd’, and the Danish band Hej Matematik’. There were also other bands present, including Hot Pans Steelband.

You can also visit the ‘Copenhagen CO2 neutral by 2025’ show, which explains Copenhagen’s climate plan. Enjoying the day was travel agent Sunmi Yun from South Korea, who was walking with her Danish husband and mother-in-law. While her mother-in-law had participated in the ECCO Walkathon ten times, it was Yun’s first time. “It was a very nice walk and we had fantastic weather all the way,” she said, “It’s a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon, and the money goes to a great cause.” The ECCO Walkathon, the largest walking event in Denmark, takes place in cities across Denmark and the world on an annual basis. The 16,000 Danish participants choose either the 6 or 10km option, and for each kilometre walked, ECCO donates one euro (7.5 kroner) to one of their chosen charities. This year ECCO donated one million kroner to SOS Children Villages, the WWF, and the local health project, Børnehjertefonden. Vivi Okholm, the global sponsorships and events manager at ECCO, was happy with the big turnout. “It has been a really good day and we are very happy with all
the people who have participated and yet again have supported the ECCO Walkathon’s three charities,” she said. “This year we had an extra focus on health and exercise through our collaboration with DGI and the various activities we have offered the participants. It is important for ECCO to take a social responsibility and support projects that inspire an active lifestyle.” So if you want an active and fun day out seeing the sights of the city, this event is highly recommended. Denmark also offers a number of walkathons and runs throughout the year, so be inspired and sign up for one to enjoy a happier and healthier life. The author is an accredited practising dietician providing expert advice on healthy eating, weight management, fertility treatment, food allergies and more. She is committed to improving the health and nutrition of individuals through practical and evidencebased advice in English and Danish. LONE TVEDEGAARD MCGUIRE

InOut | THE CPH POST ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE FOOD BLOG BY SIMON COOPER
IT’S OFTEN SAID that we eat with our eyes first. Well, that’s largely true, unless of course you happen to read about a dish beforehand – say, on a menu or in a recipe. In both cases, the words themselves take over. The brain’s processing becomes the sensual frontrunner. Of course, no-one should cook a dish because it has a fancy, foreign name, but those of you who like hosting dinner parties can tick the boxes of taste, sight and sound with this basic dessert. Okay, so blackberry clafoutis sounds pretentious – but it also, probably just as it did when the French as-
similated their lofty culinary tastes and vocabulary into British and Danish societies respectively, impresses. It’s a killer – a warm, doughy wonder with flavoursome berries that explode in your mouth. A fruity toad in the hole if you like. (That name would also prick up ears if said over a foreign dinner table.) But while it may sound like a Roman textile discipline, it’s a perfect dessert for late summer: not too light and not too heavy. And for fans of chewy, sweet Danish pastries and cakes, it will also score heavily.

Restaurant Kiin Kiin Guldbergsgade 21, Cph N; 3535 7535; four-course menu 450kr, seven-course 775kr (with wine menu 1450kr); www.kiin.dk There are only two Thai restaurants in the whole world that have been awarded a Michelin star. One of them is in London, the other one is Kiin Kiin, which you’ll find in the heart of Nørrebro. And it’s well deserved. PDR Reinwald’s Farvergade 15, 1463 Cph K; open Mon-Sat 14:00-24:00 (kitchen closes at 22:00); 3391 8289; fivecourse menu with wine 850kr, other dishes 75-215kr; www. reinwalds.dk Serving lunch and dinner, a director’s script-length of choices confronts you at Reinwald’s. It’s a who’s who of classic French and Frenchinspired Danish dishes as well as a monthly set menu. Any chef would be proud of this. SC 1. th. Herluf Gade 9, Cph K; 3393 5770, 1th@1th.dk; 1,250kr per person; www.1th.dk 1. th. is a gourmet restaurant with a twist. Tucked away behind a hardto-find door on the first floor to the right of a typical Copenhagen apartment, the restaurant is based around the concept of the dinner party with guests stepping into what appears to be a private apartment and then being utterly spoilt by their hosts. Cap Horn Nyhavn 21, Cph K; open Mon-Fri 10:00-00:00, Sat-Sun 09:00-00:00; 3312 8504; starters from 99kr, main courses from 139kr, desserts from 39kr; see www.caphorn.dk for special events Nyhavn, the old harbour, is an idyllic area of magic and hygge what the Danes like to say when referring to anything that is cosy, charming, or delightful: all qualities Cap Horn has in abundance. Its simple menu boasts a fine selection of organic, homemade Danish fare, with a touch of seasonal influence. There were two highlights: the veal, pumpkin, mushrooms and potatoes with amazing truffle sauce (a “best ever veal experience”) and the chocolate cake (“Oh My God”), which was possibly the best chocolate cake ever! MM BioMio Halmtorvet 19, 1700 Cph V; open daily 12:00-24:00 (later Fri and Sat), kitchen open 12:00-22:00; 3331 2000; starters 75kr, mains 135kr; www. biomio.dk Located in an old warehouse next to trendy Kødbyen, Bio Mio is certainly unusual for conservative Copenhagen. It’s stylish without being pretentious, fast enough that you don’t go crazy waiting for food, and loud enough that you can make a racket without anyone raising an eyebrow. JH

disappointed by the sizes of desserts in many restaurants here, but this was definitely not the case at Nyhavns Færgekro. My tasty strawberries, which were turned in lightly whipped cream with small pieces of meringue, were almost as big as the main meal! As I struggled to eat it all, I was surprised how such a simple concept of strawberries, cream and meringue could work so well together. The flavours were simple, fresh and quite simply sweet, as many desserts should be. My companion meanwhile was enjoying the homemade Chocolate cake,

cooked to perfection. The soufflé was a nice addition, and the tomato hollandaise was the ideal pairing for the fish and vegetables. Accompanying our starters and mains we enjoyed a bottle of the La Truffière 2009. It was slightly softer than most reds, making it the perfect choice for those wanting to share a bottle, regardless of whether you’re eating red or white meat. For dessert I chose the Strawberries, whilst my chocolate-loving companion chose the Chocolate cake. Often I’m left
JERUSALEM
NYHAVNS Færgekro is a cosy Danish restaurant serving authentic fresh fare with a French twist. While their menu may be small (open for brunch, lunch and dinner, the restaurant offers traditional Danish lunch fare such as a Herring Buffet and various Smørrebrød), it is anything but predictable. Close to Kongens Nytorv, this lovely restaurant is located in the appealing and idyllic Nyhavn. Housed in one of the harbour’s historic buildings, it has a charming maritime atmosphere that is at its best when the sun is shining. The first floor windows pay homage to the area’s emigrant history, and as the sun shines through, patrons can see the names of different destinations such as New York and Sao Paolo etched in the windows. Wanting to feel a touch of sophistication, my partner chose to start with the exclusive ‘Löjrom caviar’, a roe that comes from the vendace fish. It was served the traditional Danish way with chopped red onions, crème fraîche and toasted bread and butter. My companion wasn’t sure what to expect, but luckily he wasn’t disappointed, commenting that it tasted fine and delicate. I chose to have the Carpaccio, which the menu explained was a dish that was dedicated to Lady Moncenigo when she found her diet too boring. Hoping to feel like a lady myself, I tucked into the thin slices of raw beef filet, served with a mild dressing, freshly chopped basil and parmesan cheese. From the first mouthful it was a wonderful taste sensation, as the softness of the meat and the burst of accompanying flavours combined. Moving on to our main courses, we waited in anticipation as my partner’s Entrecôte and my Grilled salmon arrived. Whilst the presentation wasn’t the most exciting thing I’ve ever seen, the portion sizes were decent and everything looked fresh. My partner’s Entrecôte was a juicy and tender beef that had been grilled and served with crisp summer vegetables, homemade potato wedges and homemade herb sauce. He devoured it quickly, paying homage to the tastiness of the meat and the unique flavouring of the herb sauce. As for the wedges, he was more than impressed and said that they were fantastic. My Grilled salmon was a beautiful piece served with a fried salmon soufflé, small new potatoes, and tomato hollandaise, decorated with fresh herbs. The salmon skin was crispy and flaky, while the lovely moist meat underneath was

A just cause means never having to say you’re sorry ARUN SHARMA
Ai WeiWei: Never Sorry (15)
Dir: Alison Klayman; US doc, 2012, 92 mins
Premieres August 30 Playing at Vester Vov Vov & Gentofte Kino
A
S THE MOST internationally recognised Chinese contemporary artist to date, Ai Weiwei has been increasingly portrayed as a latter-day Václav Havel or Alexander Solzhenitsyn, whose names also became synonymous with political dissidence and whose activism fuelled their creative work. Indeed, in May this year, Ai was one of the first winners of the posthumously inaugurated Havel Prize for Creative Dissent, and the Chinese authorities are unlikely to have been amused by the fact that the award deliberately resembled the ‘Goddess of Democracy’, the makeshift statue erected by prodemocracy protesters in Tiananmen Square in 1989. But as Alison Klayman’s documentary repeatedly demonstrates, Ai has long delighted in literally and metaphorically giving the finger to the Chinese government, often via philosophical tweets such as: “There are no outdoor sports as graceful as throwing stones at a dictatorship.” Although American-born, Chinese-based journalist Klayman, who regularly filmed Ai between 2009 and 2011, does delve into Ai’s past to bring newcomers up to speed (he initially studied at the Beijing Film Academy alongside Chen Kaige and Zhang Yimou), she devotes most screen time to his then-current projects. Ai is shown preparing largescale shows in Munich in 2009, London in 2010 (the famous Sunflower Seeds installation in Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall) and working on an ongoing
The seeds of doubt, the grains of truth, the birdseed museli of remembrance - it’s brilliant being an artist, you can pretty much get away with anything
project to document the thousands of school-age victims of the 2008 Sichuan earthquake. The latter takes many forms: from the sociological (using crowd-sourcing techniques both to gather data and to verbally commemorate individual victims) to the spectacular (a gigantic Munich installation in which 9,000 rucksacks, like those found in the rubble of collapsed schools, were mounted and colour coordinated to spell out: “She lived happily on this Earth for seven years” in Chinese characters). Ai’s career has already fuelled a high-profile BBC documentary, Ai
Weiwei: Without Fear or Favour (2010), and there are several overlaps in content, though Klayman’s film benefits from much more extensive access to Ai himself, as well as several caught-onthe-wing encounters with officialdom – a poignantly memorable and amusing highlight involves Ai filming policemen who are in turn filming him eating at a restaurant. Klayman pays much attention to Ai’s extensive use of social media in general and Twitter in particular, and the role that they play in broadcasting his power-mocking stunts worldwide. She was also lucky with her timing: her film was in post-
production when Ai’s 81-day disappearance in 2011 (ostensibly over tax anomalies) became a major international scandal, supplying her with a far more potent ending than the authorities’ previous wing-clipping efforts, which had included low-level persecution, police assault and the demolition of his Shanghai studio. Ai claims that his life and work have become inseparable, and Klayman seems to accept this largely uncritically: though she touches on Ai’s unorthodox domestic arrangements whereby he’s raising a son conceived outside his marriage to fellow artist
Lu Qing, she rarely probes too deeply. Similarly, the film superficially skims several potentially fascinating topics, not least the complexity of westernChinese relations at a time when power balances are decisively shifting, but credit must be given to Klayman for the level of detail achieved in what must have been rather difficult circumstances to shoot a film in. Also, the film’s accessibility and immediacy make up for most analytical shortcomings, especially given the increased need for others to speak on Ai’s behalf as the authorities devise yet more ways of silencing him.

Dir: Mark Andrews & Brenda Chapman; US animation, 2012, 100 mins; Kelly Macdonald, Billy Connolly, Emma Thompson, Julie Walters Premieres August 30 Playing nationwide
E
xpectations are inevitably sky-high when a new Pixar film is released. And if the latest film, Cars 2 (2011), lacked some of the beautiful and profound simplicity one has come to associate with the studio, that’s forgivable in light of the trend-setting artistic triumphs of films like The Incredibles, Up and Toy Story.
Brave, Pixar’s 13th featurelength film, will surely delight both hard-core fans and more casual movie-goers. Without getting speculative, the film seems aimed (and destined) to please yet another segment as well: those who have long grumbled about the absence of female Pixar leads. Here she is then: the blazingly crimsonhaired, adventurous Princess Merida of Scotland, who is all the more engaging in Macdonald’s beautiful Lowland lilt. With subtle echoes of Grimm’s fairy tales and a heroine that recalls both Mulan and Ronia the Robber’s Daughter, Brave is a surprisingly funny yet serious tale about identity,
fate, tradition and a troubled mother-daughter relationship. It’s warmly empathetic – a Pixar trademark – but doesn’t avoid creating a few stock characters. Case in point, Merida’s father (Connolly) is almost identical to the Viking father in How to Train Your Dragon. This doesn’t really matter, especially as stock characters are almost vital to a fantasy/fairy tale. We meet Merida when she finds herself prescribed by tradition to marry one of three very ungainly, teenaged suitors who incompetently compete for her hand in marriage. The queen mother (Thompson) is in charge of civilising Merida to a state of adult compliance,
but the nonconformist tomboy understandably prefers to keep shooting her arrows from horseback while riding through mesmerising Scottish CGI-woods. When a magic spell suddenly backfires and turns four innocent family members into bears, the film takes a tragic, dark turn. Without spoiling much, the situation demands a learning of the kind of lesson that is so integral to both fairy tales and family entertainment. You gladly accept Brave’s few familiar shticks. After all, no other studio can sheath them so disarmingly in aesthetic and moving storytelling. KASPER R GULDBERG

New this Week The Expendables 2 Dir: Simon West; US Action, 2012, 103 mins; Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Chuck Norris, JeanClaude Van Damme, Bruce Willis, Big Arnie Sly Stallone and other compatriots from the 2010 film The Expendables return for the 2012 sequel, joined by an even more star-studded cast of action movie legends. If you want to see old Hollywood heroes tear up the town in a fastpaced, shoot-em-dead flick loaded with its share of wry humour, make The Expendables 2 your choice this weekend. Just don’t expect much more than that. HB
Book Your Tickets The Dark Knight Rises (11) Dir: Christopher Nolan; US action, 2012, 165 mins; Christian Bale, Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman, Marion Cotillard, Anne Hathaway With the arrival of Bane (Hardy), a terrorist hell-bent on ‘liberating’ Gotham before reducing it to rubble, Batman (Bale) is forced out of exile to once again take on the role as Gotham’s Dark Knight. Nolan retains the delicate balance of building a credible reality while remaining respectful to the comic book origins, and as he departs from the Batman franchise, he leaves his reputation as a master filmmaker and the general state of comic book cinema in the best shape they’ve ever been. MW
Martha Marcy May Marlene (15) Dir: Sean Durkin; US thriller, 2011, 112 mins; Elizabeth Olsen, Sarah Paulsen, Hugh Dancy Watch a brilliantly underplayed Olsen give her debut in this instant cult-status masterpiece directed by Sean Durkin. When Martha (Olsen) escapes from a hippie cult and finds her way back to her sister, her recovery is neither simple nor swift. It will leave you questioning the level of manipulation we all tolerate in our everyday lives. MW
Avoid like the Plague The Bourne Legacy (15) Dir: Tony Gilroy; US action, 2012, 135 mins; Jeremy Renner, Edward Norton, Rachel Weisz, Stacey Keach When a ten-year-old passport photo has the second most screen-time after the lead actor, the film holds little promise. No other franchise entry works this hard to justify its own existence, the irony being that a decent action film is justified by decent action – of which Bourne Legacy has little. AS
Total Recall (11) Dir: Len Wiseman; US/Can sci-fi/action, 2012, 121 mins, Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel, Bryan Cranston, Bill Nighy This grossly miscast sci-fi reboot is a soulless affair with a handful of neat visual ideas that are
inconsistently executed by a director who, by aping giants like Ridley Scott and Steven Spielberg, only succeeds in placing emphasis on his own inadequacies. MW
LOL (3) Dir: Lisa Azuelos; US comedy, 2012, 97 mins; Miley Cyrus, Demi Moore, Ashley Greene, Adam Sevani If a film begins with an American teenager talking about her high school and walking out in slow-motion, arm in arm with her bffs – you can put your expectations to rest. This flick has nothing new to offer, whether it’s teenage broken hearts, hooking up in summer camp, a battle of the bands, school trips to Paris, parties and pot. MH
That’s My Boy (11) Dir: Sean Anders; US comedy, 2012, 116 mins; Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, Leighton Meester, Susan Sarandon, James Caan, Milo Ventimiglia After last year’s horrific Jack and Jill, you would think Adam Sandler would give the caricature comedy genre a rest. Yet, here he is, donning an overgrown wig and his most exaggerated Brooklyn accent to give it one more go. SNL comedy it-boy Andy Samberg does his best to add life to this tragically unfunny film, but he would have done better to avoid it entirely. LL
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (15) Dir: Timur Bekmambetov; US fantasy/horror, 2012, 105 mins; Benjamin Walker, Dominic Cooper, Anthony Mackie, Mary Elizabeth Winstead This so-called film is nothing but a thinly veiled marketing fad from Hollywood’s whoremongers, a stick of quick-melting chewing gum for an ADD generation. Avoid at all costs. AS
Step Up: Revolution (7) Dir: Scott Speer; US romance, 2012, 103 mins; Adam G Sevani, Chadd Smith, Kathryn McCormick, Ryan Guzman The fourth installment of the Step Up franchise is exactly what you would expect it to be – a bombastic dance show interrupted sporadically with godawful acting, cringeworthy dialogue and a ridiculous plot. LL
Also Playing Take This Waltz (11) Dir: Sarah Polley; Can romance, 2011, 116 mins; Michelle Williams, Seth Rogan, Luke Kirby, Sarah Silverman This cute hipster romcom is gorgeously shot and skillfully acted, though not quite cute enough to forgive the cringeworthy cookie cutter title. KG

To Rome with Love (3)
Weekend (11)
Dir: Woody Allen; US/ Ita comedy, 2012, 102 mins; Woody Allen, Alison Pill, Judy Davis, Jesse Eisenberg, Alec Baldwin, Penelope Cruz, Ellen Page, Roberto Benigni This film may not be a reinvention of the Woody wheel, but compared with most romcoms out this summer, it is almost a masterpiece. MW
Dir: Andrew Haigh; UK drama, 2011, 96 mins; Tom Cullen, Chris New, Jonathan Race, Laura Freeman Andrew Haigh’s second feature moves away from the potential pigeon-holing of gay-themed cinema and towards a universal terrain of desire, hope and disappointment. It occasionally edges towards the clichés of romantic comedy, however the director deftly steers clear of a crowd-pleasing easy-option resolution, and keeps the film rooted in a reality that squarely and knowingly avoids being larger than life and instead focuses on the quirks and textures of contemporary British life. AS
Albert Nobbs(7) Dir: Rodrigo Garcia; UK/ Ireland drama, 2012, 113 mins; Glenn Close, John Banville, Mia Wasikowska, Aaron Johnson, Brendan Gleeson Though Glenn Close shines in the title role, the conventional structure and didactic plot will leave you counting the minutes while hoping to be surprised before events unfold, all too often, as predicted. Albert Nobbs is not without an audience, but it’s far more likely to find it on primetime television than in selected cinemas. MW
La Délicatesse (7) Dir: David Foenkinos & Stéphane Foenkinos; Fra romance, 2012, 108 mins; Audrey Tautou, Francois Damiens, Joséphone de Meaux Despite some shining moments, including an excellent leading man and a tastefully underused Parisian backdrop, this French rom-com remains above average but not outstanding. Audrey Tautou is her usual self, looking confused and exhausted most of the time, while other actors are criminally underused. FP
The Amazing Spider-Man (11) Dir: Marc Webb; US action, 2012, 136 mins; Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Martin Sheen, Sally Field Webb’s reinterpretation of Spider-Man is a little premature, but the movie holds its own with a fresh script and a talented cast. Here’s a Spider-Man the girls will actually want to sleep with! LD
Snow White and the Huntsman (11) Dir: Rupert Sanders; UK/ US action, 2012, 127 mins; Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron, Chris Hemsworth, Sam Claflin, Ian McShane Unfortunately, this overlong retelling of a Grimm fairy tale is short on magic. MH

DIFFICULT to know what to make of The Spiral, an ambitious pan-European drama series about the heists of six artworks in six different cities co-ordinated by a Germanic-sounding Banksy, which will be broadcast across the continent over five episodes in September. Copenhagen is one of the cities, rising star Thure Lindhardt is among the Danish cast, a look at the (rather exciting) trailer suggests the filmmakers have been inspired by the Millennium Trilogy, the whole thing is in English, and it’s participative – you can search for the loot on the show’s website. But beyond that, there isn’t much else to go on. Also taking a continental approach is Paul Merton’s Adventures (DR2, Mon-Thu 17:55), which sees the British comic pay
a visit to a number of different locations, some of which are in his home country. It’s not the first time Merton has done travel TV, and if you’re hoping he’ll adopt his panel show persona, you’ll be disappointed – he tends to be a little too polite and dull overseas. For something more in your face, you can’t go wrong with Gordon Ramsay, and his latest venture, Gordon Behind Bars, which takes him within the walls of Brixton Prison to teach the lags how to make fairy cakes. This is the programme Claus Meyer’s could have been (did Ramsay nick the idea?) if Danish prisons weren’t so soft. Elsewhere, there’s another chance to see the sixth season of Hustle (BBC Ent, Sat 21:00) and the first ever episode of Red Dwarf
(BBC Ent, Thu 22:50); in Alan Carr: Chatty Man (BBC Ent, Wed 22:30) the camp comic might have met his match in Jimmy Carr; Infamous Assassinations this week revisits the death of Michael Collins (DRK, Mon 21:45); learn a few tips from Steve McQueen - The Essence of Cool (DRK, Tue 20:00); TV2 Zulu, Sun 12:00 The Spiral classic Ealing comedy The Lavender Hill Mob (DRK, Tue 21:30) never disappoints; talent contest The Glee Project (DRHD, Sat 14:45 & Sun 17:75) is back for another season; 24 Hours in A&E (SV2, Sun 21:50) is a new doc series set at Kings College Hospital in London, which critics describe as “profound”; and learn more about the world’s craziest driving country in India on Four Wheels (DRK, Wed 21:35).
