IT PAINS me to say this, given that it pretty much pays my salary every month, but the advertising industry leaves a lot to be desired. Where on earth do these rabid maniacs get the impression that annoying potential customers is the best policy? Like that pop-up of the wrinkly whose secrets are going to bring down the skincare industry. Great, good luck with that, weird looking woman, but given that your interruption means I’m going to have to retype my Facebook password for the fifth time today, do you really think I’m going to ever patronise your company? But that pales in comparison with automated TV commercials. During their Ryder Cup coverage on Sunday night, TV3 Puls, part of Viasat (the official Swansea City club channel), went for one of their breaks during a golfer’s backswing. And it wasn’t any backswing, it was Ian Poulter’s approach to the final green over two massive trees with the whole of the tournament hinging on the outcome.
Which kind of leads me to Music Around (see G2 for details), a London-themed classical music festival in both Copenhagen and southern Sweden over the next ten days. If you’re a regular visitor to our website, you might have seen its advert exactly in the place where the most recent Reader Comments are normally listed. Some of you have probably already seen the ad hundreds of times, with increasing annoyance, vowing to not only steer clear, but to verbally abuse anyone carrying a musical instrument case on public transport. Be assured. This is not a cunning ploy to make you drink the waters of Music Around until you are drowning in its pleasures, hypnotised into attending every single concert. It is simply an ongoing technical problem. In the meantime, please don’t hold it against the festival. While the Brits might be third division when it comes to classical music, the London theme brings with it a certain degree of fun not normally seen in the genre. Beyond that, is there a lot going on? Well, the ladies will love page G9 (shopping for shoes and the Femina Messe), and on G8, there’s a chance to win two tickets to November’s Sensation. So kind of. We promise, the competition won’t involve you having to read an ad. And no, the answer isn’t white.
Various venues across Øresund; started Oct 3, ends Oct 14; tickets: 60-370kr, includes several free concerts (particularly for under-26s); www.musicaround. nu/music-and-art-around-eng ‘LONDON’ is the 2012 theme of Scandinavia’s biggest classical music festival, Music Around, which is celebrating its sixth year. For eleven days, the aim is to enlighten audiences about the magnitude of London as a centre for classical music. Musicians will delight us with a varied programme ranging from the Renaissance, the Baroque and symphonic classics from the turn of the century, to contemporary music and even premieres. The organisers – Musik i Syd, Malmö Symphony Orchestra, the Copenhagen Phil and the Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra – have put together a very promising programme, recruiting top performers from all over the Øresund region and beyond. Representing the UK are, among others, the London Sinfonietta, the BBC Singers, the Badke Quartet and Benjamin Grosvenor. Read on for our selection of the best concerts. But please bear in mind that some concerts are being played on both sides of the Øresund – and that the prices for the same concert vary somewhat depending on the venue and country. TOP PICKS:

Calendar Girls

Appropriately, the CTC, which has once again recruited Barry McKenna to direct, has decided to donate half its profits from this production to the Department of Haematology at Rigshospitalet. So if you fancy a dose of Britain during this rainy Copenhagen autumn, a good laugh or maybe just a peek at one of the lovely calendar girls, then make sure you book your ticket and add this show to your calendar. Dansehallerne, Pasteursvej 20, Cph V; starts Tue, ends 20 Oct, weekday performances at 20:00 (not Oct 15), times vary at weekends; Tickets: 210kr, under- 25s: 140kr, group discounts available, www.teaterbillet.dk; www. danskdanseteater.dk UNDER THE UMBRELLA title of Walking in the Night, the Danish Dance Theatre is staging three expertly choreographed and performed pieces of contemporary dance, which will delight audiences at 12 thrilling shows at DANSEhallerne in the flourishing artistic atmosphere of the Carlsberg district. The world-renowned Israeli, Itzik Galili, and the up-and-coming Swedish-based Bosnian choreographer, Edhem Jesenkovic, are teaming up to put the Danish Dance Theatre’s international troupe of dancers through their paces. It is sure to be a memorable evening with a trio of danced dramas that speak directly to the body and soul. Jesenkovic has himself danced under the tutelage of Galili, and in this way the evening promises to be a classic meeting of the master and his pupil. One of the world’s most sought-after choreographers, Galili will be overseeing two of his classic pieces: Peeled and Fragile. Both per-
Exhibitions
fectly showcase the troupe’s breathtaking skills and energy. Galili has created works for some of the most important companies in the world, such as Les Ballet de Monte Carlo, Batsheva Dance Company and Netherlands Dance Theatre II. He has been living in Holland since 1991 and this will be a rare, but extremely welcome visit to Denmark. Peeled (2004) is a visually spectacular and dynamic work originally created for ten dancers, but now performed by the company’s 12 dancers. This compelling work depicts our quest for self-esteem and was created through the improvisation and provocative manipulation of Galili. The specially composed soundtrack (provided by Dutch group Percosa) incorporates the percussive rhythm of typewriters as a soundscape. An astonishingly breathtaking lighting design of 15 squares lit from above could be described as the 13th dancer. Sudden changes of colours and lights that follow and guide the dancers across the stage are an ingeniously integrated part of the performance. The choreography itself is a joy to behold and creates a highly intense theatrical atmosphere. Galili challenges the audience to listen to their own inner interpretations and reach out into the unknown. In contrast to the raw physical energy of Peeled, is the sheer mystery and beauty of Galili’s Fragile (1997), a powerful, gripping and intimate dance performed as a duet. The choreography conveys a whole
understated register of emotions, from the erotic to the melancholy. The fluid and technically challenging movements rotate seamlessly around a single downward strip of light. The choreography harnesses a powerful and attentive energy that captivates and hypnotises the audience. The second half of the evening bears witness to the talents of the up-and-coming Jesenkovic, a former dancer from Danish Dance Theatre who is currently part of the Norwegian Carte Blanche ensemble. His 12 years of experience as a dancer have given him the backbone in which to develop his skills as a choreographer, and in 2011 he won critical acclaim for the performance 4 times Hundred – which was inspired by his childhood experiences in Sarajevo. Jesenkovic now returns to Denmark with the world première of his Dilemma of Obedience. Both a choreographer and musician, Jesenkovic works intensely with rhythm and musicality. As you would expect, he works in close collaboration with the dancers, developing the choreography with a focus on intricacy of movement and the physical potential of the body. Dilemma of Obedience is inspired by the chilling experiments of Stanley Milgram in the 1960s. Milgram demonstrated that people, in general, trusted and obeyed the commands of authority to the extent that they were willing to impose electric shock treatment

A deleted scene from Cronenberg’s The Fly: he stepped out of the telepod and instantly knew something was wrong
on others. Eight dancers are supplemented by eight mask-bearing figures who represent the dark side of human nature. Man’s inhumanity to man and the negative consequences of group mentality are explored in this specially commis-
sioned piece. It will be fascinating to witness Jesenkovic’s interpretation. Aficionados of modern dance have already bought tickets for the sold-out première. With just under an hour of world class choreography featuring the undeniable talents of
the Danish Dance Theatre’s group of incredible dancers, this could be the perfect introduction to an alluring and enchanting world that will only leave you wanting more.

The soul of the Faroes Teitur
Temple, Jernbanevej 16, Kongens Lyngby Friday 21.00 150kr, www.billetlugen.dk
A
TTEMPTING TO make it as a singer/song writer has never been easy. With the genre flooded with a host of talented artists, and more strumming away in their bedrooms waiting to take the stage, it’s difficult enough to even get a gig, let alone sell records. What it takes is a truly powerful talent and the ability to sound different to everyone else. It takes an original voice and lyrics that actually say something. Fortunately for Teitur, he has all of this in spades, and as his popularity grows, he’s moving from strength to strength. Moving to Copenhagen as a teenager from the Faroe Islands, Teitur soon found work as a songwriter for a prominent LA-based publishing house. No small feat in itself, his work as a songwriter led to his first album, Poetry and Aeroplanes, which was released in the summer of 2003. Universally acclaimed and hailed as one of the most emotionally engaging albums of that year, he soon attracted the attention of American artist John Mayer, who became a vocal supporter of his music. The tour that followed had him play over 300
shows and open for the likes of Rufus Wainwright and Aimee Mann. After a messy break-up with his former label, Teitur released his second album, Stay Under the Stars, in 2006. More layered and featuring wider instrumentation, the album went gold in Denmark and was played on both US and Canadian radio. In the year that followed, Teitur released his third album, Káta Hornið. Written in his native language, the record saw him proudly acknowledge his Faroese background. Teitur isn’t just your average acoustic guitar man. He possesses a soulfulness rarely seen in modern musicians, and his songs can be at once uplifting and brimful of sorrow. His music seems to harbour a dark secret: one that he tries to confess through the soft harmonies and melodies of his songs. He is, without a doubt, real. It’s easy to see that he feels what he’s singing about. Teitur’s fourth album was recorded in 2008 and saw him move in a different direction. Dark, moody and often experimental, The Singer was recorded on the small Island of Gotland at the summerhouse of a former Swedish princess. The location was aptly chosen, and the album has a sparse coldness that reflects the environment. Above all, the album proved that Teitur is willing to go down paths that
differ from his most popular songs − a trait that’s seen him transform time and time again. There are very few people who can say they’ve shared a beer with legendary blues artist Chris Whitley, but Teitur is among them. Considering both artists’ interest in simple, emotional songs, it’s easy to see how they got along. Their meeting was the inspiration for Teitur’s song ‘Legendary Afterparty’ − chance encounters like these often worm their way into his writing. Teitur’s most recent album was released in 2010, and he’ll more than likely have more up his sleeve. Expect to hear a mixture of his old classics as well as new material. With tickets going for as little as 150kr, this will be one of the better shows you’ll see this month. ANDY RUGG

Cold Specks
Store Vega; 21:00; 150kr The Canadian singer Al Spx (aka Cold Specks) has made a lasting impression on the soul-pop scene with her poetically entitled album I Predict a Graceful Expulsion (2012). Emerging from the gospel tradition, Spx blots her emotional songs with a distinctly wintry flavour − particularly in the ballad ‘Winter Solstice’. The 24-year-old has been on the receiving end of favourable reviews recently – particularly for the tracks ‘Blank Maps’, ‘Netherlands’ and ‘The Mark’ – and you can be sure those who filled the Pavilion tent at this year’s Roskilde will make up the numbers at Store Vega.
Fu Manchu
Pumpehuset; 21:00; 192kr Hailing from southern California, the four-piece stonerrock band offer a psychedelic flavoured type of rock that is at once gritty, pacey and raw. Founded in the late ‘80s, the ever-changing line-up of the group has cultivated a brand of music that has become synonymous with Venice Beach’s blossoming surfer/skateboard scene. Having broken their promise to commit to one last tour ever last year − a tour which was centred around the band’s eponymous third studio-album, In Search Of (1996) − the comeback of the group promises to be, once again, a concert of epic proportions.
The Blue Van
Forbrændingen; 21:00; 160kr The Danish four-piece catapulted onto the rock scene in 2003 with a style of rock music that is something of a mix of The Kinks and Cream, borrows as much from the ‘60s as it does the ‘80s glam-rock, and is bursting with surefire appeal. Their music is ruled by meaty guitar riffs that give body to their hefty rock sound. With several big numbers to their name that have grabbed the attention of American listeners, and their new record, Would You Change Your Life?, flying high in the charts, the future’s bright for one of the biggest acts to come out of the country in the past decade.
Evan Parker feat KonvoJ: Ensemble
CPH Jazzhouse; 20:00; 100kr Considered one of Europe’s most talented and intriguing saxophonists, Parker’s avant-garde solos combine creative breathing techniques and use of the hands. Recognised as one of John Coltrane’s many disciples, Parker worked as part of an experimental quartet in Birmingham in the early ‘60s before making significant waves in London’s blossoming underground jazz scene in the mid-‘60s. The 21st century has seen an electronic dimension appear in Parker’s approach to the point where he is now thought of as something of a noise artist.
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis
September 25 Lille Vega T 9:03 PM, an antsy, excited, sold-out crowd at Lille Vega began chanting: “Mack-le-more, Mack-le-more, Mack-le-more” – but they’d have to wait. It wasn’t until five minutes til ten that the lights finally dimmed and Macklemore bounded onto the stage to roars and raised arms, possessed with the cool energy of the smooth and simple bassline of his 2011 single ‘Make the Money’, which vibrated thickly through the crowd. The song, which chronicles Macklemore’s early rap career, is really about staying true to yourself: making the money, if you’re lucky, but not letting it make you. Macklemore has been rapping since 2000 when, as a 17year old, he distributed a selfrecorded EP entitled Open Your

Eyes. After releasing his first fulllength album, The Language of My World, in 2005, Macklemore fought a bout of substance abuse and had an unproductive mid-naughties. But in 2010, he teamed up with producer Ryan Lewis to release the EP VS. Redux, and since then the two have been touring Europe and the US, generating lots of hype along the way. On Tuesday it was obvious why. After polling the crowd for their age group – the 90s babies
nearly screamed the one 70s flower-child out of the room – Macklemore said: “You know what the first thing me and my boys do when we get to a new city? We go to a thrift shop.” Released this year, the single ‘Thrift Shop’ shuns materialism and glorifies an individualised style of swag that doesn’t depend on money or branded homogeneity. The crowd lapped it up. The duo then played ‘Ten Thousand Hours’, the first track off their upcoming album The

Heist. The real first of the night came afterwards, though, when Macklemore, having a little fun, asked the crowd to sit down – and we obliged. “No-one’s ever got everyone to sit down at a hiphop show,” Macklemore said, and the crowd laughed and cheered. They were quick to their feet, though, for what was arguably the biggest crowd-pleaser of the night, ‘Wings’, a song about Nike Air Jordans, our relationship to consumerism and trying to fly, metaphorically. Macklemore departed momentarily before returning moments later for an encore with the catchy, uptempo synthesised riff of ‘And We Danced’, from the 2009 release The Unplanned Mixtape, prepping the crowd ready for one last energetic hurrah. Everyone in Vega sang the refrain and it was clear they sang for the same reason as himself – they meant it: “And we danced, and we cried, and we laughed, and had a really, really, really good time.” HENRY BUTMAN
Scissor Sisters
Amager Bio; 20:00; 350kr Led by the charismatic performers Jake Shears and Ana Matronic, the Scissor Sisters’ sassy, cool and catchy blend of pop and glam-rock became something of a global phenomenon overnight when they crashed onto the club scene with their self-titled debut album in 2004. Following the release of Night Work last year, they’ve once again stayed on the right side of music critics and continue to be a grand commercial success. Renowned for their flamboyant, carnivalesque and lavish performances, it comes as no surprise that tickets are rapidly selling out, so book up soon to avoid disappointment!
Nightlife Nick Hook
Culture Box; Fri 23:00; 70kr Since the dawn of acid house, the London-bred DJ and producer has been at the epicentre of the scene. Producing over 110 tracks for some of the biggest house labels in the UK − including Whoop!, Loaded, Distinctive and FFRR − he’s become something of a house legend, continuiAng to play at some of the biggest venues in Europe. A torchbearer for progressive acid house, the direction of his music has evolved since the early ‘90s, with his latest mixes tapping into a growing subgenre of acid house. Making his first appearance in Copenhagen this Friday, it’s likely to be an occasion that Copenhagen’s club crowd will embrace with open arms.

Although it pains me to write something about L.O.C., you can’t deny the extent of his popularity with Danish youngsters − of course it remains to be seen whether his lame tunes are a positive influence on the younger generation. WITH A NAME inspired by a sexual position between two women, Scissor Sisters are a group of energetic performers who will be thrusting themselves onto a venue near you on October 11. The flamboyant New York band is glam rock, pop and electro all rolled into one dizzying, brash, upbeat spectacle. At the beginning of their career, in the early naughties, they performed as part of an underground Cabaret show that also featured an artist dressed as a giant vagina, singing “Lick me in my wet spot” to the tune of ‘Hit Me With Your Best Shot’. The band is certainly racy, and you’ll most probably feel like dancing when they come to Amager Bio. Tickets are 350kr from www.billetlugen.dk. The xx are an English trio who want to detach themselves from their exes, including their former school, Elliott School, where they all met alongside several other famous bands like Hot Chip and Four Te. “A teacher from Elliott, who had never even taught us, said how great we were,” one of them once said. “It’s a bit annoying.” And they were quick to set the record straight on an ex-band member, publicly announcing they had dropped Baria Qureshi in 2009, contradicting media reports that she left due to exhaustion. But no-one likes to have a friend who constantly bitches about their ex. So, let’s highlight some of the positives – and there are many. The group’s self-titled 2009 debut, which they impressively produced themselves, rated highly on the ‘best of the year’ lists – taking ninth spot on the Rolling Stone list and second for NME.

FOOD & DRINK
InOut | THE CPH POST ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE FOOD BLOG BY JESSICA O’SULLIVAN
AS THE WEATHER gets cooler and the days shorter, one super annoying thing that I just can’t ignore is my tightening waistband. Now while I don’t have any scientific proof, it just seems to be a fact of life that the colder it gets, the more we overindulge and eat. Whether we’re preparing our winter coats, or merely not as active as we were during the warmer months, it can be hard to maintain an active lifestyle. To combat the decrease in exercise and increase in overeating, healthy eating can help us maintain the slimness we are accustomed to.
Now whilst salads don’t exactly scream cold weather food, they can be made so that they provide all the comfort of a warm meal, without the need to feel guilty. Indeed warm salads can often be just as delicious and heartwarming as those naughty hot foods we often crave. My favourite warm salad is high in protein, and even better, it’s easy to make. Introduced to me by my husband, it’s an interesting combination of roast vegetables and crispy salad. Whilst it may sound weird, give it a shot and I promise your days of repenting will be over.

Restaurant Kiin Kiin Guldbergsgade 21, Cph N; 3535 7535; four-course menu 450kr, seven-course 775kr (with wine menu 1450kr); www.kiin.dk There are only two Thai restaurants in the whole world that have been awarded a Michelin star. One of them is in London, the other one is Kiin Kiin, which you’ll find in the heart of Nørrebro. And it’s well deserved. Kiin Kiin isn’t just a restaurant, it’s an experience, a place where every little detail is thought through. PDR Reinwald’s Farvergade 15, 1463 Cph K; open Mon-Sat 14:00-24:00 (kitchen closes at 22:00); 3391 8289; fivecourse menu with wine 850kr, other dishes 75-215kr; www. reinwalds.dk Serving lunch and dinner, a director’s script-length of choices confronts you at Reinwald’s. It’s a who’s who of classic French and Frenchinspired Danish dishes as well as a monthly set menu. Any chef would be proud of this. SC 1. th. Herluf Gade 9, Cph K; 3393 5770, 1th@1th.dk; 1,250kr per person; www.1th.dk 1. th. is a gourmet restaurant with a twist. Tucked away behind a hard-to-find door on the first floor to the right of a typical Copenhagen apartment, the restaurant is based around the concept of the dinner party with guests stepping into what appears to be a private apartment and then being utterly spoilt by their hosts. The monthly set menu costs 1,250kr and has a whopping ten courses, and you can tell them in advance of any food quirks you might have and they will personalise the menu for you. Terrific food, friendly and attentive service and a unique setting. CS

The burgers are huge, and must be eaten with a fork and knife to prevent a mess. But they’re delicious, and the vegetarian, beef, pork and chicken options mean that even the fussiest eater will find something. DC Oysters & Grill Sjællandsgade 1B, 2200 Cph N; open Mon-Sat 17:30-24:00, Sun 12:00-21:00; oysters cost 1535kr each, main courses cost 135-185kr; 7020 6171; www.cofoco.dk Oysters & Grill is not rocket science, yet it gives diners in Copenhagen access to fresh and delicious food at reasonable prices with an emphasis on seafood, fish and meats, which are prepared simply and flavourfully. Enjoy a lychee mojito as you study the menu, and be sure to try the prawns with rice noodles. For dessert, order the banana cake with salted coconut ice cream, then stagger home, full of good food and wine. CS
Warm chicken and roast vegetable salad Olive oil 2 small Romaine lettuces 1 small-medium sized block of feta cheese 4 small tomatoes 6 large peeled potatoes 6 beetroots 2 ripe avocados 2 chicken breasts, cut into cubes 1 small jar of basil pesto Salt and pepper to serve PRE-HEAT the oven to 200c and take the peeled potatoes and cut them into thin wedge shapes. Do the same with the beetroot. Once cut, spread the vegetables over a baking tray, taking care not to have vegetables on top of each other. Then season with olive oil and spices of your choosing. I suggest thyme, salt and pepper.
5 - 11 October 2012
Place vegetables in the oven and allow them to cook for 3540 minutes, or until golden brown and crunchy. Take the romaine lettuces and, after thoroughly washing them, roughly chop them. This dish will work best when served in a flat rectangular dish, although any salad bowl will do. Lay the leaves in the dish, creating a slight wall around the edges. Cut up the tomatoes, avocados and feta cheese and spread over the salad leaves. In a small saucepan add a drizzle of olive oil and heat the pan. When warm, cook the chicken, adding two large tablespoons of the basil pesto. When the chicken is cooked, transfer it the salad dish. Take the baked vegetables from the oven and scatter throughout the salad.

G13 Anything to declare at customs? Sì! Bacino è bellissimo! FOOD & DRINK
InOut | THE CPH POST ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE
5 - 11 October 2012
IT’S PLUSH, it’s cosy and it’s inviting. Three words to describe the ambience of Havnegade’s very own bar, restaurant and grill house, Custom House. Sited in an oval building that used to be the city’s Customs department, the restaurant certainly stands out in the posh quarters of the city. Housed in the building is an Italian restaurant, Bacino, a swanky cocktail bar, a bar & grill and Ebisu, a Japanese eatery. But my evening at Custom House was all about discovering Bacino. Like most guests, we started our evening with a drink at the cocktail bar. My drink of choice was a delicious Rhubarb Fizz, a drink made with rhubarb and ginger jam all the way from the UK, with a splash of lemon juice, sparkling water, added to which was nothing less than a portion of Sobieski vodka, from the estate of the same name, which apparently is the best vodka in the world. My dining partner chose a Honey Smash, a drink made with the same Sobieski vodka in addition to fresh raspberries, strawberries, acacia honey, lemon and mint. As the bar was still serving the summer cocktail menu, there was a range of house special cocktails made with fresh ingredients and summer fruits, so that one can almost indulge without feeling too guilty. As I enjoyed the drink, I took a minute to examine the layout and surroundings. The set-up of Custom House is very definitely unique, for this is a restaurant where one can find three different kitchens serving as many cuisines, each with its own very distinctive décor. But yet they are all under just one roof without a dividing door. And then there is the waterfront, which can be enjoyed from three different sides of the Custom House. Shortly, we were escorted to the part of the building that calls itself Bacino, the Italian restaurant. Our waiter for the evening, Salvatore Mastruzzo, and it must be made clear at this point that the service level was extraordinary, showed us to our seats and poured us a glass of Franciacorta Brut Storica 61 Berlucchi, Lombardia. This was followed by the house special appetiser of tomato and fresh basil, artichoke and watermelon with bread, Modena balsamic vinegar and Umbrian olive oil. I opted for the four-course tasting menu, and my courses included an anitpasto of Grilled cuttlefish with rosemary and crispy potatoes, a primo of Black ravioli with bandade, tomato concasse dressed with basil and garlic. As is tra-

dition, a secondo followed, which was a delicious plate of Pan-fried sea bream with tomato, capers and olive sauce. To finish off this wonderful array of courses was a serving of Millefeuille with lemon cream and berries. With these courses we were served some well chosen glasses of wine that complemented each dish. Among the wines we were served were: the 2010 Langhe Nebbiolo, Cigliuti, the 1998 Marsala Targa Florio, Sicilia, the 2010 Dolcetto d`Alba Elio Altare, the 2009 Chardonnay Collezione de Marchi Isole

& Olena , the 2010 Dolcetto d`Alba Priavino Voerzio and the 2009 Sauvignon Piere Vie di Romans. The food and wine at Bacino certainly lives up to expectation, but where this restaurant sets a higher bar than its counterparts is in the service. At no point during the evening did we or any of the other guests have to try to get the waiting staffs’ attention or check our watches and wonder when the next course was going to arrive. Having someone like Salvatore attending to you, with his experience and knowledge of food and wine, gives
dining at Bacino a whole new meaning, making the experience a crash course in Italian cuisine. What’s more, the chef at Bacino is none other than Salvatore’s brother Vincenzo. There aren’t many restaurants in Copenhagen where one can find the combined culinary skills and service excellence of a sibling duo. So if you are looking for Italian food, and would like to experience the artistry of these two gentlemen, I recommend finding a table facing the water at Bacino.

On the road to mediocrity, not brilliance ARUN SHARMA
On the Road (11)
Dir: Walter Salles; US drama, 2012, 137 mins; Sam Riley, Garrett Hedlund, Kristen Stewart, Kirsten Dunst, Viggo Mortensen
Premieres October 4 Playing Nationwide
M
UCH ANTICIPATED yet widely regarded as a folly to attempt to bring to the big screen, Jack Kerouac’s 1951 semi-autobiographical rite of passage through the heartland of America has simultaneously titillated and traumatised a host of screenwriters and directors ever since executive producer Francis Ford Coppola bought the film rights in the 1970s. Kerouac had previously asked Marlon Brando to take on a filmed version back in the 1950s; however, this was at a time when both the moral and cinematic climate of censorship would never have accepted the kind of reverent, and often painfully faithful, adaptation that we have before us today. Director Walter Salles and screenwriter José Rivera previously tackled a similar tale of idealism on the move in The Motorcycle Diaries in 2004, and here they return to explore Kerouac’s recollections of post-war America using a muted handheld style, frequent jump cuts and a jazz score that erupts at regular intervals, supplying a surrogate substitute for the author’s restless prose. Unfortunately, this is supplemented by tediously repetitive and ubiquitous visual overdoses of drug taking sessions, booze-fuelled sexual experimentation and the incessant lighting of cigarettes. The film is evocatively shot, well assembled and piously attentive to the mercurial qualities of its source material, and Salles certainly does inject the film with plenty of youthful vigour, but it is so overly calculated in its bid for sponta-
Riley’s performance would have been much improved if he had concentrated a little more on his method and a little less on his swagger
neity that it smacks of fakery throughout, likely attesting to the unenviable task of trying to reproduce Kerouac’s literary lightning bolt for the screen. Soon after the death of his father, Sal (played by Sam Riley from 2007’s Control) meets charismatic Dean Moriarty (Hedlund), an insatiable, selfdestructive, serial womaniser and drugdevouring playboy who seems to exert a hypnotic gravitational pull on just about everyone that crosses his path. Hitchhiking his way across the country, Sal finds that Dean is bedding both the trashy Marylou (Stewart) and the demure Camille (Dunst). Dean contin-
ues to see-saw between the two women throughout the film, while Sal wanders the countryside looking for inspiration by observing and patronisingly interacting with the forgotten and faceless underclasses of America. “The only people that interest me,” Sal declares in voiceover midway through the film, “are the mad ones, the ones who are mad to live, mad to talk, desirous of everything at the same time, the ones that never yawn or say a commonplace thing − but burn, burn, burn, like Roman candles across the night.” However, the illuminating light, scintillating heat and hunger for
life that should be provided by this young cast as they burn down the conventions of their surroundings, come across as disappointingly contrived, tepid and safe. Riley in particular never manages to convey − with visual expression or through his narration − what is going on in his mind, and his Kerouac is simply too bland and passive to identify with. The cameos provided by Steve Buscemi and a growling Viggo Mortensen as the alter ego of William Burroughs do hit their marks slightly more effectively, albeit only for fleeting moments, as the filmmakers attempt to nourish and force-feed this rather ema-
ciated form. The novel portrayed an intoxicatingly fierce personal quest for meaning and belonging in a cold war America full of conflict and contradiction, where conformity was rife and outsiders were met with suspicion. However, this adaptation fails to capture this search for a codified new way forward and instead relies on oversimplified sensation, surface angst and fragmented movement from one isolated and unexplored bohemian bubble to another, each of which seems to deflate with the merest of bombastic whines and groans.
We will go loopy (no time travel needed) Looper (15) Dir: Rian Johnson; US action/ drama, 2012, 118 mins; Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis, Emily Blunt, Piper Perabo, Jeff Daniels Premieres October 4 Playing nationwide
I With the nose and the chin down, JGL is only seven cop roles and one high-profile divorce away from his future self
N THE not too distant future, things haven’t changed much. People wear ties. Certain sections of society have developed largely useless telekinetic skills. Some ride around on hover-cycles − provided they can get them started. Many are addicted to a drug that you put in your eyes. And time travel ex-
ists − but only certain criminal syndicates have access to it. One of the highest paid occupations you can have is called ‘Looping’: mob men, from 30 years further in the future, send their hits, bound and gagged, back through time to a designated spot where the ‘Looper’ is waiting. The Looper executes the hit and incinerates the body. Clean. No trace. For his trouble, the Looper lives like a king. That is, until one day the hit they’re facing is ... their future self. Time travel can be a tricky business, but most of the semantics are deftly addressed in voiceover during the opening minutes. Keep your ears open and strap yourself in because the
film barely slows for the following hour. When it does change pace, you’ll be treated to some of the most confident, well thought-out drama this side of an Oscar. If there’s a film to finally propel sci-fi into industry respectability it should be this one. Of course statuettes are unlikely, but Joseph GordonLevitt and Emily Blunt deserve recognition for truly luminous performances. Gordon-Levitt plays our lead, a Looper named Joe whose future self (Willis) escapes execution. Even before his future self shows up, it’s possible to recognise Levitt channelling Willis with such subtlety and precision as to be almost chilling.
Willis’ presence serves to highlight the film’s undeniable resemblance to Twelve Monkeys, while the legendary anime Akira is also brought to mind. In his minimalist approach to crafting a recogni0sable future, writer/director Rian Johnson also recalls the likes of Andrew Nichols’ directorial debut Gattaca. Ultimately, Looper belongs to that cerebral sub-genre of sci-fi that remembers to give equal consideration to both the quiet reflections and the whizzbang thrills. It’s refreshing to see something this good not adapted from a bestseller, but rather forged from a singular vision. A classic is born. MARK WALKER

New this Week Cloclo Dir: Florent Emilio-Siri; Fra musical drama, 2012, 148 mins; Jérémie Renier, Benoit Magimel, Monica Scattini, Sabrina Seyvecou, Ana Girardot; Mon 18:30, Grand Teatret Claude Francois was a key figure in France’s rock and roll era, in which he slept with almost as many women as he sold albums (which is at 67 million to date). This vibrant biopic with a brilliant Jérémie Renier in the leading role covers his life from traumatic childhood to his bizarre bathtub death. LL
Cinemateket Documentary of the month: Vivan las antipodas Dir: Victor Kossakovsky; Ger/Arg doc, 2011, 108 mins; english subtitles If you were to stick four (extremely long) toothpicks through the planet, eight countries would findthemselves joined to their antipodes − the country directly on top their own. Argentina over China, Hawaii over Botswana, Spain over New Zealand and Russia over Chile. Kossakovsky has made not so much a documentary, but a geographic photo-poem in his search to find the (if any) links between the countries and their antipodes. LL
Taken 2 (15) Dir: Olivier Megaton; US action, 2012, 95 mins; Liam Neeson, Maggie Grace, Famke Janssen, Leland Orser
The first film was a guilty pleasure that worked only for Neeson’s fast-paced and high-octane action sequences, and in spite of a mind-numbingly dreadful performance from Maggie Grace. Now they’re both back, but this time with frenetic fight scenes that appear to be stolen straight out of Die Hard, and even more screen time for Grace. Skip it. LL
Book Your Tickets The Deep Blue Sea (11) Dir: Terence Davies; UK/ US drama, 2011, 98 mins; Rachel Weisz, Tim Hiddleston, Simon Russell Beale, Ann Mitchell, Jolyon Coy Dramatically observed and poignantly acted, The Deep Blue Sea tells the story of a woman who risks everything for love, and of the fear and loneliness that drives her. Extra points go to Weisz for being so ridiculously beautiful! KRG
The Dark Knight Rises (11) Dir: Christopher Nolan; US action, 2012, 165 mins; Christian Bale, Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman, Marion Cotillard, Anne Hathaway With the arrival of Bane (Hardy), a terrorist hell-bent on ‘liberating’ Gotham before reducing it to rubble, Batman (Bale) is forced out of exile to once again take on the role as Gotham’s Dark Knight. Nolan retains the delicate balance of building a credible reality while remaining respectful to the comic book origins, and as
he departs from the Batman franchise, he leaves his reputation as a master filmmaker and the general state of comic book cinema in the best shape they’ve ever been. MW
Brave (7) Dir: Mark Andrews & Brenda Chapman; US animation, 2012, 100 mins; Kelly Macdonald, Billy Connolly, Emma Thompson, Julie Walters With subtle echoes of the Brother’s Grimm and a heroine that recalls both Mulan and Ronia the Robber’s Daughter, Brave is a surprisingly funny yet serious tale about identity, fate, tradition and a troubled motherdaughter relationship. KRG
Avoid like the Plague Ted (15) Dir: Seth MacFarlane; US comedy, 2012, 106 mins; Mark Wahlberg, Mila Kunis, Seth MacFarlane, Joel McHale, Giovanni Ribisi A tale of Peter Pan-esque protracted male adolescence and ‘broversus-ho’ ethics, this is a film that squarely relies on the comic potential of random flotsam and jetsam pop culture, tongue-incheek offensiveness and stateof-the-art foul-mouthed puppet humour. As with much of MacFarlane’s work, it is devoid of any trace of sophistication or finesse, and is fitfully amusing thanks only to the occasional deadpan shock-value jokes offered by Mark Wahlberg’s crooked straight-man performance. AS
The Bourne Legacy (15)
Dredd (15)
Dir: Tony Gilroy; US action, 2012, 135 mins; Jeremy Renner, Edward Norton, Rachel Weisz, Stacey Keach When a ten-year-old passport photo has the second most screen-time after the lead actor, the film holds little promise. No other franchise entry works this hard to justify its own existence, the irony being that a decent action film is justified by decent action – of which Bourne Legacy has little. AS
Dir: Pete Travis; US/ UK/Ind action, 2012, 95 mins; Karl Urban, Olivia Thrilby, Lena Headey Although the production’s minimal budget noticeably creaks in delivering the goods, there are some visually inventive sequences that ensure your eyes are often kept busy. Your brain, on the other hand, can afford to run considerably slower than usual. MW
Total Recall (11) Dir: Len Wiseman; US/Can sci-fi/action, 2012, 121 mins, Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel, Bryan Cranston, Bill Nighy This grossly miscast sci-fi reboot is a soulless affair with a handful of neat visual ideas that are inconsistently executed by a director who, by aping giants like Ridley Scott and Steven Spielberg, only succeeds in placing emphasis on his own inadequacies. MW
Also Playing Buck (11) Dir: Cindy Meehl; US doc/action, 2011, 88 mins Centered around the real-life inspiration for Robert Redford’s 1998 The Horse Whisperer, this documentary by first-time filmmaker Cindy Meehl is far more compelling than Redford’s redundantly romantic characterization ever could hope to be. AS
Chernobyl Diaries (15) Dir: Brad Parker; US horror/ thriller, 2012, 86 mins; Devin Kelley, Olivia Taylor Dudley, Jesse McCartney, Nathan Phillips, Dimitri Diatchenko Despite some pretty dismal performances, this thriller has some eerily jumpy moments to offer. Sadly the filmmakers are unable to maintain this level of excitement beyond the first hour, where the taut thrills give way to directionless time-paddling. MW
Moonrise Kingdom (7) Dir: Wes Anderson; US comedy, 2012, 94 mins; Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Frances MacDormand, Bruce Willis, Tilda Swinton, Jared Gilman, Katy Howard This newest feature film from debonair filmmaker Anderson has a brilliant cast, a wry script and stunning cinematography. It’s fashionable entertainment, and will no doubt please Anderson’s considerable fan-base. But under all the bells and whistles, is it just another coming-of-age,
G19
feel-good romcom – even a faintly insincere one at that? MW
Bachelorette (3) Dir: Leslye Headland; US comedy, 2012, 88 mins; Kirsten Dunst, Lizzy Caplan, Isla Fischer, Rebel Wilson While there are funny moments in Bachelorette, it’s really a drama at heart. By attempting to explore such serious issues in a light-hearted manner, Bachelorette is sometimes witty and insightful – but more often that not, it’s just a bit depressing. LD
Ai WeiWei: Never Sorry (15) Dir: Alison Klayman; US doc, 2012, 92 mins Though Klayman superficially skims several potentially fascinating topics, the film’s accessibility and immediacy make up for most analytical shortcomings. AS
The Expendables 2 (15) Dir: Simon West; US Action, 2012, 103 mins; Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Chuck Norris, Bruce Willis, Big Arnie Sly Stallone and other compatriots from the 2010 film The Expendables return for the 2012 sequel, joined by an even more star-studded cast of action movie legends. If you want to see old Hollywood heroes tear up the town in a fastpaced, shoot-em-dead flick loaded with its share of wry humour, make The Expendables 2 your choice this weekend. Just don’t expect much more than that. HB

PICK O THE W F EEK
Accused season two SV1, Sat 21:30
DUSTIN Hoffman did it. So did legendary ladies man Tony Curtis. And even Patrick Swayze. But Sean Bean? The gruff, northern hardman who cops it in the most violent way possible in almost every film he’s in. Dressing up as a lady! Say it isn’t so. With the right project, anything’s possible. Scriptwriter Jimmy McGovern, back with a second series of courtroom flashback drama Accused (series one, DR1, Mon 23:20), had the goods to help convince Sheffield’s finest that he might have the acting chops to don frocks as a transvestite (even though the wig makes him look more manly), and with another hardened oak of British cinema, Stephen Graham (Al Capone in Boardwalk Empire), signed up as the love interest, Mr Bean couldn’t really say no.
Sharpe would have said no, though. And given his knowledge of Spanish vantage points, he’d have snapped up the lead in Falcón, the latest British detective yarn set abroad, this time in Seville. The Sky drama, which hasn’t yet been shown on British free-to-air, is helped by a healthy portion of thinking man’s totty (Hayley Atwell, Emilia Fox) and a story of widespread corruption. Doesn’t sound like Spain at all. Spanish filmmaker Luis Buñuel was director James Marsh’s (Man on Wire) main influence on his uncomfortably compelling 2011 doc Project Nim, which details how some kindly New Yorker ‘70s hippies raised a chimp just like a child to see what would happen. Put it this way: Rise of the Planet of the Apes has a happier ending.
Elsewhere, Talking Books catches up with Toni Morrison (BBC World, Sun 18:30); The Spike Guys Choice Awards (TV2 Zulu, Fri 21:30) is the only night of the year when chauvinism is laughed off as cutting comedy; catch the entire first season of Better off Ted (TV2 Zulu, Sun 10:10), SV1, Sat 21:30 Accused season two a satirical comedy with a dull office setting, which the critics loved but was pulled after two years due to poor ratings; X Factor USA (DR HD, Sat & Thu 20:00) is back with Britney Spears among the judges; Sesame Street fans will love Being Elmo: A pupeteer’s Journey (DR2, Sat 21:05); and Million Dollar Listing New York (TV3 Puls, Thu 20:00) hopes to transport the winning formula to the East Coast.
