In theory, this gives hard-working parents a chance to spend some much-needed quality time with their beloved offspring. In practice, however, the hard-working parents often keep their noses to the grindstone, and Copenhagen is instead awash with benevolent grandparents, called away from golf courses and knitting circles to rediscover their parenting skills. It all starts out on Monday with blissful smiles and model behaviour from respectful nippers, but by Friday, patience has worn thin and the city is chock-a-block with tired and desperate retirees snapping at the clearly outof-control youngsters. But fear not, here is a guide to some of the half-term activities that could potentially make time fly and rescue your sanity.

Vesterbrogade 3, Cph V; starts Fri, ends 28 Oct; tickets: adults 95kr, under-8s free adm, day-passes available for rides; www.tivoli.dk Tivoli has wholeheartedly embraced the Halloween tradition: so much that it has extended it to last from 12-28 October. With pumpkins aplenty, hay bales, spiders and scarecrows, be ready for a brand new blood-curdling experience featuring plenty of ghouls and goblins at the opening of Scary Silden (the Haunted House). It’s so scary that the under-12s can’t go in (it’s open from 18:00 every evening), and even some adults might need a hug as they emerge white-faced on the other side. Witches will be brewing magic potions, and an abundance of activities such as pumpkin carving, spider catching and the daily Halloween parade will absolutely keep the young ones busy. The usual activities, restaurants and rides are open, making the Tivoli half-term Halloween extravaganza a compulsory annual treat.

I SOMETIMES worry that my eight-year-old daughter is growing up too quickly. It’s nothing she’s said nor done: she’s neither a diva nor Belieber, yet. What worries me is her perception of time. Hardly a day goes by when she’s bored out of her tiny little mind. She lives 100 metres from school and has friends on every corner, including one immediately upstairs. And if they’re not around (occasionally a problem in July), she’s always got the televisual marathon that is DR Ramasjang. I, in contrast, grew up in the countryside. Sometimes I wake up in a panic, thinking I’m back in the 1980s. There were days back then that I thought would never end. Even family parties, the scourge of my early existence (during which I could have spent a million years in Narnia and nobody – intoxicated, every last one of them – would have

noticed), are fun for her. In my youth, children were still seen but not heard at adult occasions. Now they’re the centre of attention, like the party wouldn’t be able to function without them. Even if their little ‘circus shows’ (they even make their own tickets) do take me back to the boredom of the 1980s. And this coming week, the city is once again pushing out the boat for the little blighters during the autumn half-term. As our previewer of the best events of offer (see G2) contends, the week has increasingly become a burden for the nation’s grandparents – their tickers straining under the glare of the Tivoli lights. And don’t forget Culture Night, this year celebrating its 20th anniversary. Most of the events are really child-friendly, and unlike some cities you could mention (not Madrid obviously, where they show Sesame Street at midnight), nobody frowns if your kids are up past 8pm. But I’m not sure I’ll be attending. By Friday my kids are so zonked out by all the afterschool activities and play-dates, that all they want to do is chill. It’s a time to slow down and chew things over, until the frenetic pace of the 21st century once again resumes on Saturday.

The incredible dinosaur show at Forum, of unprecedented size and quality, will captivate young and old alike. Marvel at the story of their 200 million-year domination of life on Earth. Fifteen unbelievably life-like dinosaurs have been recreated, and this is the chance to watch them walk, hear them roar and witness their fight for survival and supremacy. From the ripple of their muscles to the menacing glint in old Tyrannosaurus Rex’s eye, you will truly believe that the dinosaurs have returned. Seen by over seven million people in 31 countries and based on the BBC TV series of the same name, the show takes visitors on a prehistoric journey back in time. The mindblowing realism gives the audience an idea of how carnivorous dinosaurs evolved to walk on two legs, and how the herbivores fended off their more agile predators. In such a bare, raw framework, anything can happen. See the dancers express something they are passionate about on the stage. There will be ten short performances, each comprising ten minutes. The evening will be informal, giving audience members the opportunity to give the dancers feedback after the performances. There are two Loona Nights scheduled for March and June 2013 if you miss out this time. EB

Explore 800 sqm of a total dinosaur universe in ‘Follow the trail’ − featuring more than ten dinosaurs and an abundance of skeletons and bones. Tuck yourself into a nest alongside dinosaur eggs, avoid the razor-sharp teeth of the Tyrannosaurus Rex and watch a 3D version of the meteor shower that made the dinosaurs extinct. Also running is the exhibition ‘Water’, featuring over 50 thrilling activities and fascinating aquatic experiments. Fight with the power of the sea when you are caught up in a rip current or experience the giant rush of surfing the waves. Circus Museum in Hvidovre

The number 1A bus takes you right to the door of the Circus Museum. From 11:00 every day during the autumn holiday, Tapé the clown’s top class buffoonery and juggling will warm up budding young circus artistes of the future. After this, kids and adults can get a bit of instruction in trapeze, tightrope, juggling and other traditional activities. The museum itself is also well worth a visit as a glimpse into the history of Danish circus.

Walking in the night

Dansehallerne, Pasteursvej 20, Cph V; ends 20 Oct, weekday performances at 20:00 (not Oct 15), times vary at weekends; Tickets: 210kr, under25s: 140kr, group discounts available, www.teaterbillet. dk; www.danskdanseteater.dk The world-renowned Israeli, Itzik Galili, and the up-and-coming Swedish-based Bosnian choreographer, Edhem Jesenkovic, are teaming up to put the Danish Dance Theatre’s international troupe of dancers through their paces in Walking in the Night, three pieces of contemporary dance that are playing over the course of 12 shows at Dansehallerne. The pieces speak directly to the body and soul. Jesenkovic has himself danced under the tutelage of Galili, so prepare yourself for the most memorable meeting of a master and pupil since The Return of the Jedi. PS

Combine this with a medieval market − colourful stalls full of arts and craft from days gone by, the chance to shoot a bow and arrow and learn how to swing a sword − and you have the perfect recipe for a great day out. Will the white knights again manage to defend the honour of their family? Turn up and find out.

Louisiana’s Children’s Wing

Clay workshops recreating body parts, painting workshops based on portraits and animals, guided family tours, a flying carpet trip for the three-six-year-olds and an ingenious ‘Art Detective’ competition in which young Clouseaus can borrow a magnifying glass and discover what is hidden in the self portrait section. A surprise reward is on offer for the lucky winning sleuth.

Meet jugglers, clowns, charlatans and country bumpkins. Taste homemade honey while the kids are stiltwalking, falling off penny farthings and knocking down stacks of tin cans with well-aimed balls. Don’t miss Bertram, the mechanical bull. There is no charge to come into the open air museum, but remember some cash for the activities and tasty titbits.

Milk City

Højbro Plads, Cph K; starts Thu (18 Oct), ends 20 Oct; free adm; www.wonderfall.dk Kindergartens throughout Copenhagen make use of the iconic green Arla milk crates. Arla, together with happenings artist Jonas Pindhund, have taken this one step further to create a towering emerald Milk City in the heart of town. Thursday to Saturday is the period when you can witness this crate-created architectural wonder while sampling Arla’s milky wares. PETE STREADER

Krudttønden, Serridslevvej 2, Cph Ø; ends Oct 13, performances Fri 19:30 & Sat 17:00; tickets 140kr, www.ctcircle.dk Based on Tim Firth’s 2003 feature film script, the CTC’s autumn production of Calendar Girls follows a group of women (this cast ranges in age from 29 to 74) who pose nude for a “Pirelli-type” calendar in an effort to raise money for leukaemia. Appropriately, the CTC, which has once again recruited Barry McKenna to direct, has decided to donate half its profits from this production to the Department of Haematology at Rigshospitalet. So if you fancy a dose of Britain during this rainy Copenhagen autumn, a good laugh or maybe just a peek at one of the lovely calendar girls, then make sure you book your ticket and add this show to your calendar. Manifesto 2083

Based upon text from massmurderer Anders Breivik’s manifesto, this co-production with Dramatikkens Hus in Oslo is a look into the motives of the man responsible for the 77 dead and 158 injured in the 2011 Norway attacks. The Golden Cockerel

It promises to be a visually appealing performance. FBP

project. On a trip to London he happened upon a theatrical performance called Madame Butterfly. Although he didn’t understand a word of English, Puccini fell in love with the Japanese themes of the play and instantly planned to base his next opera on the story. He rushed home to Italy, quill in hand, and set about putting notes to paper. The celebrated composer Giuseppe Verdi died in 1901, so the throne as ‘Italy’s top opera man’ was there for the taking. Unfortunately, when Madame Butterfly opened at Milan’s Teatro alla Scala in 1904, it was met with a great deal of booing. Confused by its failure, but sure that he had a potential success in his hands, Puccini tootled home and made a few crucial changes to his work. The ‘new’ opera was performed to rave reviews later that year, and the rest is history. The narrative of the opera begins with the marriage of an American naval officer, Lieutenant Pinkerton, to a young Japanese girl, Cio-Cio San (nicknamed Butterfly). For Pinkerton the marriage is a farce, a marriage “in the Japanese style; for 999 years but with the right to cancel the marriage each month”. It is a marriage borne out of boredom, something to fill in the time before he can have a “real wedding and marry an American bride”. For the young Japanese protagonist, however, the marriage is very real. She gives herself completely to her husband, including renouncing her ancestral religion,

Revolution Happened Because Everybody Refused to Go Home

It features art works from around the world that focus on recent global protest movements in the Middle East and the US. Work is shown under the ‘Disobedience Archive (The Temporary Office), and Crisis Mirror’. Artists include Critical Art Ensemble, Harun Farocki, Oliver Ressler & Zanny Begg, Rene Gabri & Irene Anastas, and Margit Czencki, among many others. BF

which in turn leads to her family renouncing her. When Pinkerton leaves Japan for America, promising to return soon, his young wife eagerly awaits his return, even more so after giving birth to his son following his departure. But it isn’t until the final act that Pinkerton returns to Japan, this time bringing with him his new American wife. The opera reaches its emotional crescendo when Butterfly realises that she has been deserted by Pinkerton. When his new wife tries to claim the baby so that she can raise it as her own, Butterfly tells her that she will only give up her son if Pinkerton asks her in person. In the most pivotal scene of the opera, Butterfly tells her son not to feel sorrow at his mother’s leaving and to only keep a faint memory of her face. After blindfolding the child, she picks up her father’s knife, which bears the inscription “whoever cannot live with honour must die with honour” and prepares to take her own life. Pinkerton arrives right at the last moment, but it is too late. Madame Butterfly is dead. Dealing with the themes of ritual suicide and intercultural love, Madame Butterfly was written during a period when interest in Japan, only recently opened to the West, was at its highest. With its touching storyline and intense emotional use of music, Madame Butterfly will transport the audience not just to the Japan of the late 1890s, but take them to a different place altogether.

behold. The title role will be played by, amongst others, Italy’s Maria Luigia Borsi and China’s Hui He, while Mexican tenor Héctor Sandoval will play the American rogue, Lieutenant Pinkerton. Director, Lars Kaalund has been helped by US conductor and voice special-

A living legend’s sax appeal

ithin the great cacophony of hypermodern life, it is important to take a moment to listen to one’s elders. Quite literally, listen to one’s elders, such as when the 85-year-old saxophone legend Lee Konitz plays a three-night gig with his quartet at Jazzhus Montmartre. Smooth, sweet and enjoyably digestible wisdom is shared through Konitz’s alto saxophone. Jazz may not necessarily have the strongest foothold in this fast-paced world, and as a genre it holds nowhere near the sway it did during its nearly 70-year long heyday, but still it has value. It requires careful listening, celebrates creativity, and

is played with a subtle attention to thoughtful details − qualities that are abundant in Konitz’s music. “The essence of playing meaningful music is improvisation and spontaneity,” Konitz said in an interview with InOut. “I’m not interested in playing arrangements or prepared music.” When performing, Konitz had adopted the unique practice of blindly beginning a jazz standard with his band. The bandmates have to identify the piece and are thus forced to seek their way into the collaboration. “I have the good fortune of playing with some guys who like to improvise standard tunes and make them interesting,” said Konitz. “I don’t like to make plans. We take turns starting tunes, and the rest of us join in and make a piece of new music from it.” The Chicago-born Konitz has played with many of the great artists in jazz history − he even fondly recalled

his performances at the Montmartre playing with the café’s regulars Dexter Gordon, Ben Webster and Jackie McLean. He was early on associated with the ‘Cool Jazz’ or ‘West Coast Jazz’ movements, but feels that such classifications are artificial and misleading, especially considering some of the negative connotations and comparisons between black and white musicians that came with the Cool Jazz term. Konitz was a member of the nonet for Miles Davis’s seminal 1957 recording Birth of the Cool. Davis received criticism for integrating the band, bringing white musicians such as Konitz and Gerry Mulligan into the group. In his autobiography, Davis responded to the criticism. “I just told them that if a guy could play as good as Lee Konitz played − that’s who they were mad about most, because there were a lot of black alto players around − I would hire him every time, and I

wouldn’t give a damn if he was green with red breath,” he said. “I’m hiring a motherfucker to play, not for what colour he is.” On The Birth of the Cool’s first tune, ‘Move’, Konitz plays the second solo, after Davis’s own soaring turn. He immediately establishes credibility with a lilting jaunt that manages to merge jazz’s past alto sound with a new variant of be-bop. Konitz was known for being one of the few alto saxophonists of his time who did not imitate the style of the immortal be-bop giant Charlie Parker, but strove to establish his own. His peaceful sway was thus perfect for critics and labels to sweep into this brand new genre of cool, but it belies the fact that Konitz has always been progressing, both reaching back and looking forwards. Konitz was 16 when he met his mentor, the blind teacher and pianist Lennie Tristano. The earliest of

Konitz’s over 150 recordings are with Tristano, but the roll-call of musicians he has played with includes names like Davis, Charles Mingus, Chet Baker, Bill Evans, Brad Mehldau and many others. In Copenhagen, Konitz will perform with the exciting Minsarah trio, consisting of the young musicians Florian Weber on piano, Jeff Denzon on bass and Ziv Ravitz on drums. Young jazz artists carry the flame of their musical forebears, but jazz is a music that has seen most of its greatest practitioners pass on. It is therefore a privilege to see an artist like Lee Konitz at such an intimate location like Jazzhus Montmartre. Listening to the inventiveness of this legendary musician at the very least, should offer the audience a kind respite from a busy day and might even teach them a thing or two about music, life and how to practise both of them. Templet; 21:00; 100kr Looking deep into ‘80s pop for inspiration, Freja Loeb’s nostalgic sound is evocative of Madonna, as are the catchy song lyrics. Take a listen to ‘Soft Blues’ to see what we’re talking about. And she might be really on to something, as her music puts her in a category all of her own in the Danish music scene. Kicking off her first Danish tour − with a gig booked at Vega in a couple of weeks’ time − this is an opportunity to get a glimpse of an artist who could well become one of Denmark’s biggest names over the coming years.

Choir of Young Believers Store Vega; 20:00; 180kr

Their desolate, orchestral-based soundscapes are inspired by a myriad of music traditions: from Greek folk music to traditional Indonesian instrumentation. Possibly Denmark’s most original export – led by talented singer-songwriter Jannis Noya Makrigiannis – the band stunned the Danish music industry by bettering their third record This Is For The White In Your Eyes (2009) with Rhine Gold (2012), a bastion of characteristically Scandinavian alternative rock. Brewing up a fervour with the tunes ‘Sedated’ and ‘Paint New Horrors’, it’s a guarantee that this gig will sell out.

Clock Opera

Lille Vega; 21:00; 130kr Based in London, Clock Opera are another of the growing ambient rock clique of English bands that have emerged of late, with a sound not too dissimilar to Choir of Young Believers. Founded in 2009 by Guy Connelly, they’ve only just released their debut record, Ways to Forget, to enormous acclaim. Alternative music fans and BBC Radio 6 listeners have fallen head over heels for the album, which includes left-field covers in the shape of Au Revoir Simone’s ‘Tell Me’ and The Drums’ ‘Me and the Moon’.

The Eclectic Moniker

Templet; 21:00; 100kr Hailing from Copenhagen, the collective tap into an exotic brand of indie rock − making heavy usage of castanets, steel drums and maracas – tapping into a Vampire Weekend-like groove. The Eclectic Moniker have assembled something of a fan-base through gigs at Roskilde and supporting the Danish band Oh Land and Norwegian supergroup Kaizers Orchestra, but now the pressure is on the seven-man orchestra to release some new material. They won’t be able to bask in the glory of their hit single ‘Easter Island’ forever.

f you’re looking for a relaxing cultural, architectural and musical experience for the whole family, then the Royal Danish Orchestra’s performance of Peter and the Wolf on the main stage of the Opera House, with three shows over two days, might just fit the bill. Originally commissioned as an educational piece in 1936 to whet the musical appetites of Russian youngsters, the familiar strains of Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf have enthralled generation after generation ever since − most recently being adapted by British TV station ITV as a theme tune for the 2012 European Championship. All the characters in the story have their own unique sound and instrument. The bird’s flute, the duck’s oboe, the cat’s

clarinet, the grumpy grandfather’s bassoon and the menacing tones of the wolf ’s French horn are all showcased, while the string section representing Peter is the work’s most recognisable melody. The popular work has been immortalised with recordings featuring narrators as diverse as Boris Karloff, Sir John Gielgud, Sean Connery, Paul Hogan, David Bowie and Dame Edna Everage. During the autumn halfterm, October 19 and 20, the Royal Danish Orchestra (Det Kongelige Kapel) will be performing the short masterpiece together with actor Henrik Koefoed as the narrator of the exciting story. The orchestra is the oldest of its kind in the world,

dating back to 1448. Today, its 130 musicians are internationally respected. Henrik Koefoed is best known for his contributions as part of the Danish comedy foursome Sons of the Desert (Ørkenens Sønner), but does come from a musical background and plays a mean trombone himself. Prior to each of the three concerts, children and their parents will have the chance to meet the musicians in the foyer and listen to them talk about their instruments. After this, budding young musical geniuses can have a bash at the woodwind and string instruments themselves to see if they can get a decent sound out of them. The Copenhagen Opera House, one of the most expensive

of its kind in the world, was controversially donated to the state by the AP Møller and Chastine Møller Foundation. Designed by renowned Danish architect Henning Larsen, the building is well worth a visit in its own right. The conflicts between Mærsk and Larsen during the actual construction, especially regarding the impressive glass front, are the stuff of legend, and tour guides at the opera provide some entertaining tales. Since the inauguration of the landmark Opera House in Copenhagen in 2005, the Royal Danish Orchestra has made full use of this acoustically superb platform for its many activities, including its regular and enjoyable hands-on workshops for children. There’s plenty of reasons to check out this performance of the timeless classic, Peter and the Wolf. It’s a great way to open up the minds of kids to the wonderful world of classical music, as well as a chance to experience the majestic Opera house first hand. Pete Streader

Turboweekend Forbrændingen; 21:00; 190kr The Copenhagen trio offer a simplistic, slow-evolving style of indie-electro. Making a dent on the Danish alternative electro-pop scene with ‘Trouble Is’, they accrued a reputation as Denmark’s next best thing. But their new record Fault Lines (2012) is too obvious, too easy and for want of a better term, cliched. Lacking that addictive ingredient that makes you want to hear tunes time and again, it’s difficult to fall for the hype or sing along to their glib lyrics. They’re a poor man’s White Lies, and no matter how persuasive their album artwork is, it’s unlikely they’re going to hold the attention of listeners for long.

Curtis Stigers Koncertsalen; 20:00; 370-440kr Having released a new record earlier this year, Let’s Go Out Tonight, the American jazz figure Stigers is renowned for his popularisation of jazz on the world stage. Extinguishing the esoterism of high-brow jazz, his tasteful style has brought peace to the pop and jazz worlds. With the ability to both sing and play the saxophone, Stigers − who will be performing alongside his cherry-picked session band − is a natural performer and regarded as one of the most prestigious figures in the jazz world.

Nightlife

− also known for playing at the various night venues spread across the city − deliver iconic tunes. It’s a must for any new students in town owning a Strokes LP or happen to be a fan of the BritPop legend Jarvis Cocker, and don’t fancy muddying their new brogues at Norrebrogade’s Drone club (an alternative rock venue a short bus ride away from Vega).

HEAT: Grandmaster Flash Rust; Fri 22:00; 200kr Grandmaster Flash hardly needs an introduction. The pulse of New York during the ‘80s and one of the most influential hiphop DJs ever, Grandmaster Flash turned the music world upside down and inside out with his pioneering techniques. Working with the Furious Fives for the best part of the ‘80s, the group achieved instant fame with the release of their seminal record The Message in 1982 and went on to become one of the most important groups in hip-hop history, forever changing the face of vinyl. Now upheld with the same esteem as other icons, his set at Copenhagen’s Rust will attract the masses for miles around, so be sure to get there early. Lucy & Raiz Culture Box; Sat 23:00; 70kr As the founder of Stroboscopic Artefacts, the experimental sound designer Lucy left his native Italy for Paris in the mid-‘00s only to become the property of Berlin − the eventual destiny of all talented house DJs. His remixes demonstrate lo-fi subtleties that set him apart from the heavier stack of house DJs. Second up will be the Los Angeles-bred Raiz whose Latin influence undeniably translates into his samples. Playing alongside some of the biggest DJs in Europe over the past decade has only added to his arsenal, particularly influencing the direction of his staccato-techno.

1, 2, 3, o’clock, 4 o’clock ROCK Dance as a magnifying glass A special culture for youngsters MILKSHAKES and dangerous rhythms. In the 1950s, young people became ‘teenagers’, and American inspirations could be seen in music, clothing and dance. The exhibition ‘1, 2, 3 o’clock, 4 o’clock ROCK’ at the Museum of Copenhagen recalls the decade in which the worlds of dance, music and young people changed forever. Jeans and outdoor bales ‘1, 2, 3 o’clock, 4 o’clock ROCK’ examines Copenhagen’s youth culture, as it looked in the 1950s, using dance as a magnifying glass. The exhibition focuses on the very first teenagers in Copenhagen. It’s about jeans bought at sailor stores in Nyhavn, ‘asfaltbal’ (outdoor balls) in Enghaveparken and riots after rock ‘n’ roll concerts in Bellahøj, but first and foremost it is about dancing.

An international youth community While their parents danced the sedate English waltz, teenagers threw themselves into a liberating jitterbug. The former generation watched in wonder: what was happening on the dancefloor? Dance as a valve In the 1950s, the dancefloor was a place young people could meet other young people, unwind and simply be young. It was here today’s youth culture emerged. Dance was an expression of freedom and the joy of life, and was also a valve in the otherwise sinister postwar period. The grip loosened Something happened on the dancefloor in 1950s Copenhagen. The youngsters let go of their firm grip on each other and let themselves loose on the dancefloor to fast beats and enthusiastic steps. In the beginning they danced to jazz, but later rock ‘n’ roll took over and throughout the decade dancing was something all young people could experience and enjoy together.

IT’S TIME to serve up mussels again! As possibly one of my favourite seafood items they should always be prepared in a classic way. Moules frites is a French recipe and may seem daunting, as it’s somewhat fancy. But in actuality, it’s a fairly simple recipe, and after prep work, is done surprisingly fast. The key to good mussels is finding fresh ones! I learned that the hard way before. Fresh mussels look black and shiny and should only smell pleasantly of the deep sea. Avoid any that smell “fishy,” look dry or are mostly open. The vast majority should be tightly closed. One of the disappointing aspects of preparing mussels is you will always have to throw some

away before and after cooking (if they’re still closed). But this recipe is still worth a shot! When making Moules frites, I usually focus on the mussel portion of the dish and just prepare frozen fries – sometimes I make oven potatoes. To get restaurantquality french fries requires an actual deep fryer and a thermometer; it’s surprisingly complicated, requiring a pre-fry at a lower temperature and then frying again at a higher temperature. That’s how the fries end up crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside, without overcooking the outside or undercooking the inside. Any kind of potato will go well with this dish, so I focused on the mussels.

Pour in the oil, then immediately toss in all of the vegetables, chilli and thyme. If using fresh thyme, the sprigs will crackle if the pan is hot enough. Cook for about one and a half minutes, shaking the

pan and stirring the vegetables until they start to wilt. With the heat still on high, toss in all of the mussels and shake the pan so they form an even layer. Cover with a lid and cook for another one to two minutes, shaking the pan once or twice. Uncover the pan and pour in the wine and Pernod. Shake and cook for another 90 seconds, so the wine reduces by half, then cover again and cook for another minute. Place a large colander over a bowl and tip the mussels and vegetables into the center. Discard any mussels that remain closed. Pour the strained liquid back in the pan, reheat and stir in the crème fraiche and parsley. Check the seasoning; you may not need any salt. Return the mussels and vegetables to the pan and reheat, shaking the pan, then divide between two large soup bowls. Serve alongside French fries

Ca’pow! The fight for super-healthy fish suppers starts here On the corner of Istedgade and Absalonsgade is a café – or is it a restaurant? Well, it’s both. “You don’t have to eat,” says Mehmet Kantin, the owner of Ca’Fish. “You can sit with a coffee, a cake, your computer … No-one is going to make you eat.” But if what you want is healthy fish – without spending a fortune or donning fancy restaurant attire – Ca’Fish is where you belong. Serving catches from the Baltic and Mediterranean seas, Kantin hopes to help Danes re-think fish, without the extravagance or priciness found in restaurants such as Noma that can often be dissuasive. The result is Ca’Fish: a place that will welcome you in blue jeans and a t-shirt, where you can select the exact fish you’d like to eat (if you want to eat one at all) and still leave satiated, satisfied and, importantly, with something healthy in your stomach. For Kantin, who is inspired by Jamie Oliver and his health-orientated overhaul of the food in Britain’s school system, as well as by a nagging question of his own – ‘How do I get my kids to eat fish?’ – the healthiness of the food he serves is paramount. “We eat beef three, four times a week,” says Kantin, “And fish once, maybe twice. The balance in our diet needs to shift towards fish. We need to reverse that ratio.” Kantin’s idea to open a ‘fish café’ – a place patrons could go to relax, hang out and, if they want, enjoy a wide selection of fresh and affordable fish – has been a long time in the making. Ca’Fish isn’t Kantin’s first culinary enterprise in Copenhagen: in the late ‘80s he opened a pizzeria and caught the craze as it began. But business had dropped off by the early naughties, when pizzerias became a corner-fixture in the city. Now, Kantin is waiting for his newest trend to catch fire among the Danes. “This is Denmark,” he says. “We’re surrounded by sea, but we don’t eat enough fish.” Not only is fish better for you, providing nutrients hard to find in such quantity elsewhere, such as heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, it physically makes you feel better – at least, when you eat it right. “When people think of fish, they either think they have to sit in a restaurant with candles and wine for three hours, or they think of fish and chips,” Kantin says. “But why bother eating fish if it’s not healthy? It’s possible to eat healthy fish quickly, too.” I stand at the counter studying the fish, fanned out on a platter in the glass display case and, when I make my selection

– Pagello and horse mackerel, both from the Mediterranean, as well as a handful of crispy anchovies, one of Ca’Fish’s many delicious ‘snack’ menu items (Kantin plans someday on selling them in a takeaway box) – the fish are taken from the platter to the kitchen to be prepared. In ten or 15 minutes – as long as it would take to check your e-mail or read a chapter in a book – the food comes. The fish, presented together with a side salad and a small pile of sliced and roasted spuds, has the same crispy, crunchy golden texture of the potatoes.

I fork off a bite of the Pagello which, underneath the satisfying crunch of the pan-seared skin, is so light and tender it barely withstands the pressure of the prongs. Mixing in the mouth, the meat melts completely and the sea seems to seep out, so fresh and clean is the taste of fish throughout the palate. The Horse Mackerel, a smaller fish, had the same light and juicy composition, with an equally crispy outer layer. And the anchovies – eaten whole in no more than two bites – packed an addictive punch of bones and brine, both sweet and salty.

The salad crunched so freshly and, with an organic cranberry juice, one of five flavours offered, left the palate cleansed. Kantin was right. I left satiated but not stuffed, full but not fat. I felt light and energised. I felt – if it’s something you can feel right after a meal – healthy. With offerings for breakfast, lunch and dinner – and a kids menu that’s free for children under five years old – isn’t it time you treated yourself to a meal you can feel good about?

USTRALIAN director John Hillcoat follows The Proposition and The Road with another vision of society struggling to establish civic order. Between the film and television incarnations of The Untouchables and the magnificent HBO drama Boardwalk Empire, currently in its third season, there lies countless other productions detailing the USA’s crime-ridden prohibition years. Lawless seeks to draw a contrast between the city-based exploits we’ve already seen, by showing us the supposedly true-life rural shenanigans of the Bondurant boys − based on the novel The Wettest County In The World by Matt Bondurant. Detailing the lives of his ancestors, Bondurant’s story follows three brothers as they run a countryside moonshine operation in Franklin County, Virginia. A legend has long surrounded the Bondurant brood: that they are protected by magic and cannot be killed. As their family-run business expands, it attracts unwanted attention from corrupt federal agents. The brothers, Forrest (Hardy), Howard (Clarke) and Jack (LaBeouf ), are offered a deal and advised not to refuse it: the corrupt authorities want their cut of the profits or the brothers will be shut down by the feds. But stoic patriarch Forrest is not the sort to bow to pressure, and soon the Bondurant boys have a war on their hands. After his wildly intense turn as Bane in this summer’s The Dark Knight Rises, Hardy emerges from be-

hind the mask to again prove his mettle with this more introspective character. The chief agitator is played by Hillcoat-regular, Guy Pearce. Pearce (inexplicably sans eyebrows) plays an unsavoury federal dandy named Rakes, appointed as special deputy of the county. Constantly flirting with theatricality, Pearce imbues the role masterfully with almost Disneyesque villainy, resembling a lean, black, shiny-shelled creepy-crawly. Despite his violent methods, he dislikes getting his hands dirty and, as such, wears the finest leather gloves whenever he goes a-skull-cracking.

Like Hillcoats’ similarly themed The Proposition, also penned by Nick Cave (yes, the musician), Lawless is a bloody brutal picture with heightened on-screen violence, the likes of which is not possible to enjoy nor always fully justify. The film seems designed to provoke unease. The production design and costumes are authentically rendered in period detail; the clothes are filthy, the walls have infinite texture and no face is fully clean. Hillcoat has delivered an immersive experience, a fully realised world populated by morally complex characters − but to what end?

Something prevents this film from reaching the heights it seems geared toward. It’s hard to condone or condemn the behaviour of the brothers as they strive to run their business, inevitably clashing with the corrupt arm of the law. Admirably, they survive under the harshest conditions, but in doing so they must behave like gangsters: survival is won by ugly deeds − their business is conducted with knuckle dusters, knives and guns. As Hardy’s character says “without the fear, we’re as good as dead.” Hardy and LaBeouf cut heroic figures, but admiration for them is con-

stantly tempered by the immorality of their methods and the pointlessness of both their trade and the law that hinders it. LaBeouf turns in his first truly credible performance, a nuanced vulnerability replacing that angry, directionless intensity that seems to constitute his default setting. Here LaBeouf puts in the most amiable performance of the film and possibly his career. However, with the exception of his touching relationship with a baptist preacher’s daughter and his friendship with the young cripple Cricket, the film is a solidly crafted but cold-blooded affair.

ROM ITS very first seconds, Oliver Stone’s Savages advertises itself as a clever and ambitious piece of cinematography. Two hours later the credits wash over what looks like an expensive, unfocused mess. We are greeted by Lively’s honeyed voice promising to narrate the story exactly as it happened, and are then

left to wonder she is in fact dead and narrating things from the hereafter. Nice twist, you think to yourself. The sad part is that the film is too oafish – and too busy toying with new combinations of torture, telecommunication and betrayal on a backdrop of Mexican drug dynasties – to deliver anything but the bare bones of a story. Based on a 2010 novel by Don Winslow, Savages introduces us to the ‘good guys’ Ben and Chon (Taylor-Johnson, Nowhere Boy, and Kitch, John Carter) – though a normal person would likely consider them cynical and narcissistic low-lives. Ben is a pseudo-idealist and former botany student. Chon, his

‘business partner’, is an ex-Navy SEAL who passes his war traumas off as macho fearlessness. They share a mansion on Laguna Beach, California – and a hot girlfriend (Lively), apparently underlining the general theme of ethical darkness. This private slice of heaven is paid for by 15 million reportedly enthusiastic dope smokers worldwide. Ben and Chon, we learn, have developed the most splendiferous cannabis known to man. When a Mexican drug cartel (seeing Hayek and a charismatic Del Toro in central roles) decides it wants a share of the high-end weed market, a game of violent negotiation, kidnapping and torture breaks out. There are ex-

citing moments, and some will enjoy Travolta as a crooked DEA cop, but the dialogue is wooden and the villains stereotypical. Primed for something epic, though, you spend the better part of two hours waiting patiently for some kind of redeeming surprise, like an inspired plot twist or something. Alas, it’s not to be. Savages looks consistently dazzling (except when intentionally sickening and morbid), but it has a heart of ‘Stone’ and ends bizarrely – with a heavyhanded Tarantino-esque flashback which, second time around, branches off into an alternative ending that is as unsatisfactory as the first. Book Your Tickets Looper (15) Dir: Rian Johnson; US action/ drama, 2012, 118 mins; Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis, Emily Blunt, Piper Perabo, Jeff Daniels If there’s a film to finally propel sci-fi into industry respectability it should be this one. With luminous performances from both Gordon-Levitt and Blunt, this is some of the most confident, well thought-out drama this side of an Oscar. A classic is born. MW

The Dark Knight Rises (11) Dir: Christopher Nolan; US action, 2012, 165 mins; Christian Bale, Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman, Marion Cotillard, Anne Hathaway With the arrival of Bane (Hardy), a terrorist hell-bent on ‘liberating’ Gotham before reducing it to rubble, Batman (Bale) is forced out of exile to once again take on the role as Gotham’s Dark Knight. Nolan retains the delicate balance of building a credible reality while remaining respectful to the comic book origins, and as he departs from the Batman franchise, he leaves his reputation as a master filmmaker and the general state of comic book cinema in the best shape they’ve ever been. Searching for Sugar Man (15) Dir: malik Bendjelloul; Swe/ US/SA doc, 2012, 86 mins If you disappear into obscurity after an undistinguished music career, you can always take pride in the fact that halfway across the world a nation is being inspired by your music to start a revolution against a racist oppressive regime. That’s at least what happened in the case of US ‘70s rocker Rodriguez, who was a hero to many during the South African struggle against apartheid. Swedish filmmaker Bendjelloul follows two South African fans as they try to find out what happened to their hero, and the result is as compelling as a real-life detective story. LL

Avoid like the Plague Taken 2 (15) Dir: Olivier Megaton; US action, 2012, 95 mins; Liam Neeson, Maggie Grace, Famke Janssen, Leland Orser The first film was a guilty pleasure that worked only for Neeson’s fast-paced and high-octane action sequences, and in spite of a mind-numbingly dreadful performance from Maggie Grace. Now they’re both back, but this time with frenetic fight scenes that appear to be stolen straight out of Die Hard, and even more screen time for Grace. Skip it. LL

The Bourne Legacy (15) Dir: Tony Gilroy; US action, 2012, 135 mins; Jeremy Renner, Edward Norton, Rachel Weisz, Stacey Keach When a ten-year-old passport photo has the second most screen-time after the lead actor, the film holds little promise. No other franchise entry works this hard to justify its own existence, the irony being that a decent action film is justified by decent action – of which Bourne Legacy has little. AS

Also Playing Dredd (15) Dir: Pete Travis; US/ UK/Ind action, 2012, 95 mins; Karl Urban, Olivia Thrilby, Lena Headey Although the production’s minimal budget noticeably creaks in delivering the goods, there are some visually inventive sequences that ensure your eyes are often kept busy. Your brain, on the other hand, can afford to run considerably slower than usual. MW

Ted (15) Dir: Seth MacFarlane; US comedy, 2012, 106 mins; Mark Wahlberg, Mila Kunis, Seth MacFarlane, Joel McHale, Giovanni Ribisi A tale of Peter Pan-esque protracted male adolescence and ‘broversus-ho’ ethics, this is a film that squarely relies on the comic potential of random flotsam and jetsam pop culture, tongue-incheek offensiveness and stateof-the-art foul-mouthed puppet humour. As with much of MacFarlane’s work, it is devoid of any trace of sophistication or finesse, and is fitfully amusing thanks only to the occasional deadpan shock-value jokes offered by Mark Wahlberg’s crooked straight-man performance. On The Road (15) Dir: Walter Salles; US drama, 2012, 137 mins; Sam Riley, Garrett Hedlund, Kristin Stewart, Kirsten Dunst, Viggo Mortensen The novel portrayed an intoxicatingly fierce personal quest for meaning and belonging in a cold war America full of conflict and contradiction. This adaptation fails to capture this search for a codified new way forward and instead relies on oversimplified sensation, surface angst and fragmented movement from one isolated and unexplored bohemian bubble to another, each of which seems to deflate with the merest of bombastic whines and groans. It’s fashionable entertainment, and will no doubt please Anderson’s considerable fan-base. But under all the bells and whistles, is it just another coming-of-age, feel-good romcom – even a faintly insincere one at that? MW

DON’T WRITE off Harry just because Wills got married. Fortune has a funny way of finding the ‘second son’. George VI, Charles I and Henry VIII were all notable examples who grew up without the pressure to land the big prize. So it’s good to see he’s enjoying himself while he can, chasing skirt, championing swastikas and creating scandals about his parentage (there’s the red hair, but surely he’s got Papa’s nose and mouth?). “From the battlefields of Afghanistan to the top of the world,” introduces John Hurt’s voiceover to Prince Harry, Arctic heroes, which follows his participation in a polar expedition that includes four servicemen disabled in action. One of them’s missing his ankle and calf – no, not the war, it was a forfeit in one of Harry’s drinking games.

Worse has happened to the 22nd century crew of Red Dwarf (BBC Ent, Thu 22:50), which in this revival (after a gap of ten years) time-warp back to Earth in 2009.
