BEN HAMILTON

SOMEBODY from the office came off his bike today and lost half the skin off his face. Makes him look a bit like Hellboy. Reminded me a similar thing happening to me when I was 12 and I wished it would scrape off all my freckles. For a bright kid, I was clueless about science. I guess I was a bit insecure and thought the girls in my class might fancy me without freckles. And stop asking me if I sunbathed under a sieve or had just been sprayed with shit. I kid you not, but the drunk headteacher of a school I was playing sport against once told me that I had freckles because I was half black. As a bright kid, I knew he was a pillock. I’m not sure I’m insecure today, if that isn’t a paradox. Everything’s great and everything, but I do have dreams in which I find myself naked at the supermarket. Apparently this can mean I’m permanently hiding something, the real ‘me’, or that I’m so confident I just let it all hang out. While I was a nice (and bright) kid,

as an adult I’ve got serious issues. Not like the cast of The Full Monty (see G3 for details), whose intentions for baring all are entirely honourable. Although, it has to be said that their press photos are a huge, sorry major, disappointment. This is, after all, Denmark! Couldn’t they have gone a little bit further? Like the International Performance Art Festival (see G2 for details), whose photos of Mad Kate left little to the imagination. In the end we went for the one of her box − cricket box, I hasten to add. Hats off (and pretty much everything else) to the organisers – they must realise that for every ten blasé arty mags, there’s going to be an uncultured one like ours making childish remarks. Elsewhere, this issue is in danger of becoming our most sexual ever. In Going Underground (see G8), we focus on prostitution, at the Roller Derby (G8) the men can fantasise about having a rough and tumble with the teams from Copenhagen and Liverpool (netball is mixed in Scandinavia – see page 14 of the newspaper – so why not this?), while their women dream about them visiting the arty Christmas markets (see G9) to buy their best Christmas present ever. Choose carefully. With the right gift, Christmas needn’t be such an anti-climax this year.

Warehouse9, Building 66, Halmtorvet 11C, Cph K; starts Thu (Nov 22), ends Sun; Tickets: Festival pass 350kr, one-day pass 160-230kr, per show 90kr, lectures free, www.billetto.dk; www. warehouse9.dk WAREHOUSE9 is an intimate performance space/art gallery dating back to April 2007. With its location in the blossoming cultural slaughterhouse district, Warehouse9 has the defined goal of bringing art into life, and life back into art. With inspiration from the avant-garde, Andy Warhol art factory era of New York, Warehouse9 has grown into an experimental and liberating space for contemporary art, music, poetry and performance with a focus on the international queer community. Over the years, it has succeeded in breaking down boundaries between the music, theatre, art and nightclub scenes, building bridges between established genres and communities. Since 2009, an always exciting and provocative year of events has culminated in the International Performance Art Festival. The four-day 2012 festival continues the focus on radical contemporary performance art that dares to take risks, challenge the limits of all things artistic and explore new ways of defining the world around us. The festival opens on Thursday with Beijing artist Zhu Ming. His signature style balloon performances see him, exposed and vulnerable, sealed into a balloon that is gradually filled with water. With only a limited amount of air in the balloon, Zhu Ming recreates concepts of self-isolation, nihilism and the time-space continuum, while interacting with the audience. Ming’s performances have been witnessed all around the world at venues including the Tate Modern in London and ICP in New York. Friday evening promises to be a wonderfully uncompromising assault on the senses. The legendary and unstoppable Penny Arcade climbed out of her bedroom window at the age of 13 to join the fabulously disenfranchised world of queers, junkies, whores and geniuses. Her fearless brand of feminist sexuality and intellectually-charged performance style has delighted and shocked audiences around the globe. Mad Kate and the Tide explore the concept of ALIVE:NESS: how alive we are in each other’s lives. An eclectic variety of musical styles combines the traditional concert staging with a performance concept that sees Kate provide an aural and visual cocktail that you won’t forget in a hurry. These two performances,

Krudttønden, Serrdslevvej 2, Cph Ø; ends Sat, performances Mon-Fri 20:00, Sat 17:00; tickets 95-165kr, www.billetten.dk; 80 mins, no intermission; www. that-theatre.com Harold Pinter’s brand of morbidly funny and deliciously weird is coming to Østerbro. Ian Burns of That Theatre Company has joined forces with Sue Hansen-Styles and Angela Heath-Larsen of Why Not Theatre Company to present Old Times, an erotic and hauntingly surreal play that explores the unstable nature of memory. A married couple’s rural tranquillity is interrupted when an old friend of the wife’s shows up for a visit. The drama that ensues, according to director Barry McKenna, is worthy of a Greek tragedy. one after the other, will leave you breathless and ready for the ensuing dialogue featuring these artists. Saturday’s highlights include the Swedish feminist art collective, Tir, in a performance of Sidewalk Position – Up Your Ass, partly an interpretation of Valerie Solana´s 1965 manuscript. Kira O’Reilly is perhaps known for upsetting Daily Mail readers (which can only be a good thing) in 2006 by hugging a dead pig on stage. An intriguing and unique combination of bio-science concepts and dance has been her more recent focus. Portuguese/Brazilian dance duo Antonio Maya and Fernando Belfiore perform The Miserable Thing, a story that considers how our body is repressed and fetishised by society, which culminates in hallucinatory imagery using paint and oil. Multi-talented Joseph Mercier’s Giselle (or I’m too Horny to be a Prince) sees Mercier on an intensely personal voyage, narrated through challenging dance, military boot fetish and a reflection on body image. Mercier delves into his own experiences as a trained ballet dancer. The

last performance of the evening is by Luscious Montana: Montana died for a Good Cause. The performance delves into the complexities of the sex industry in the form of an intimate self-portrait. Each of the three days close with what promises to be some fascinating debates and discussions featuring the artists. Sunday is mostly a day of lectures for those with a more academic interest in performance art. However, there is a performance by the young Danish artist Nicolai Legind, Leaving for a Moment, which is the final one of the festival. Over the four days at the art bar BarHvaViHar, a group of students from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, will encourage discussion and audience involvement on the theme of ‘welcome’. The International Performance Art Festival is absolutely guaranteed to both entertain and provoke. It’s a utopian arena where the borders of art are expanded and explored in an atmosphere of mutual trust.

Crazy Christmas Cabaret presents Hitchcock-Up!

Glassalen in Tivoli, Vesterbrogade 3, Cph V; ends Jan 12, performances Mon-Sat 19:30, Sat 15:00; tickets 100-370kr, www. teaterbilleter.dk; www.londontoast.dk This year, to celebrate 30 years of the CCC, the master of suspense is being reinvented by the mistress of suspenders. “I write the show about issues that are relevant to the public,” writer, director and leading lady Vivienne McKee told InOut. “And Hitchcock is as influential today as he was when he was alive. Just look at The Killing and Borgen − they have that Danish Noir quality that is undoubtedly Hitchcockian.” The plot sees ‘Vivienne’ decide she’s had enough of the CCC format and instead decides to adapt a long-lost Hitchcock script. Her actors vow to dispense of her as soon as possible.

The Full Monty

Stærekassen, August Bournonvilles Passage 3, Cph K; starts Fri, ends Dec 1, performances Fri, Sat, Wed & Thu at 20:00, Dec 1 at 16:00; Tickets: 230-365kr, www.billetlugen.dk AMATEUR stripping. Not a common theme unless you’re drunk, a bodybuilder or have very little shame. But what if you’re unemployed, with nothing to lose and a whole lot to gain? Enter The Full Monty. For the first time ever in Denmark, six Danes (considered amateurs on the stripping front) from the Teatret Gorgerne will rip off their gear in front of a 500-strong crowd and go all the way … or will they? Based on the super successful 1997 British film The Full Monty, the onstage experience is just as shocking, moving and flat-out hilarious. This musical comedy tells the story of six unemployed men – four of them former steelworkers – who decide to get their kit off in a male striptease in the hope it will bring in some much needed cash and give their sorry lives a boost. A flurry of interest then pours in after they declare their show will outdo the Chippendales (a famous American stripper group) because they’ll strip all

Operaen, Main Stage, 10 Ekvipagemestervej, Cph K; ends Jan 16; performances Sun 15:00; tickets 125-895kr, billet@kglteater.dk, 3369 6969; duration 240 mins, two intermissions; sung in Italian with Danish supertitles; www.kglteater.dk The swansong of his career in Italy, Semiramide is Gioachino Rossini’s operatic adaptation of a famous 1748 Voltaire tragedy, which in turn is based on the historical life of a 9th century Assyrian queen. It stars globally-acclaimed singer Henriette Bonde-Hansen in the charismatic, complex title role and also features the English bel canto tenor Barry Banks, known from the Met in NYC. KRG

the way − hence the name ‘The Full Monty’. Teatret Gorgerne are behind the big strip, and although opening night is still a week away, Teatret Gorgerne have been tantalising Copenhagen with some revealing taster previews already. Passengers on the Metro were caught off guard recently when actor Emil Schneider suddenly rose from his seat and began showing his wares. “Not all of them were enthused,” says Schneider who plays Keno in the show. “Most people took the spontaneous strip number nicely, but some chose to completely ignore what was happening. Some stared off into space or suddenly became very preoccupied with a leaf on their shoe, while I threw off my clothes right next to them. They simply couldn’t handle it.” It’s this kind of reaction that has actor Anders Gjesing, who plays Jerry, more convinced than ever that Copenhageners are in need of this show to ruffle their straight feathers. “We’re always seeing shows like Les Miserables and Jesus Christ Superstar [Teatret Gorgerne’s English language choice last year] so we need a few of the small, weird ones too to broaden people’s horizons,” says Gjesing. You’d imagine that getting your kit off for 500 pairs of eyeballs each night is no easy feat for an actor; however, Gjesing thinks otherwise.

“For me at least, the stripping part ranks higher on the excitement scale than the scary one.” “It’s like the last frontier: something you don’t get to do every day. I actually think it’s scarier getting our clothes off in front of each other than getting them off for a bunch of strangers.” This then begs the questions: is The Full Monty for women or men? “It’s for both,” says Gjesing. “While girls will obviously want to bring a bunch of their girlfriends, it’s so well-written and funny that men will love it too.” Marie-Louise Lange who plays Vicki Nichols adds that the humour of the show plays a huge part in attracting audiences. “It’s wonderfully sarcastic and the dryness of it fits the Danes very well,” she said. “We get to laugh at our own silliness – which hopefully means that we will act wiser when we face similar situations.” And while the climax of the show is a male striptease, The Full Monty gains it’s depth by mixing in raw and real issues. It’s these contrasting themes that capture people, says director Tom Aarup Larsen. “I would describe this as a musical comedy with heart,” he said. “The story has a duality about it. On one hand it’s about stripping, but it also focuses

on overcoming boundaries and gaining self-confidence.” It’s themes such as unemployment that, Gjesing says, give the show a very up-to-date feeling. “This is something that’s worrying a lot of people in Denmark right now, so it’s important to have these conflicts

in there.” “People also just love seeing the underdog win,” Gjesing adds. On top of featuring six naked men, The Full Monty boasts a 12-piece live band – which gives the show another layer of emotion. Despite all this, Larsen is plainly calling it a “bloody good

night out”, on which audiences can soak up a rich piece of drama with great music to boost. But will they or won’t they go all the way and go sans gstrings? You’ll have to see for yourself …

OR ANYONE who thought that only manufactured pop acts were at the mercy of the fickle whim of the public’s grace, a closer look at the fates of recent singer-songwriters might make you think again. These troubadours, one-man (or woman) bands with their hearts on their workman-like sleeves, are as prone to the comings and goings of fame as any other genre. For every successful David Gray, there’s an under-achieving Stephen Fretwell. But the relatively low cost for the record label, coupled with the potentially high profit should they succeed, means they won’t be disappearing anytime soon. And so to 24-year-old Michael Kiwanuka, London-born to Ugandan parents. His decision to sign to the UK’s most successful record label of the last generation, Polydor Records, was a bold move − for discerning artists who hold their creative autonomy in high regard, joining a major label can be akin to a deal with the devil. But the omens so far are good, and it’s looking like a winning combination that’s set to continue through 2013 following an impressive 2012. After winning the much-vaunted BBC Sound Poll at the beginning of 2012, Kiwanuka’s debut album, Home Again,, was propelled to the top 30 in ten countries (including #4 in the UK and #23 in Denmark). A more recent nomination for the Mercury Prize added to an ever-growing portfolio of critical praise, and comparisons

to such titans of the genre as Bob Dylan, Bill Withers and Otis Redding followed. A good year for sure, but also not entirely surprising for someone who is in fact a someone of substantial talent. A flick through his videos and performances online, or even a cursory listen to Home Again, will quickly show that t o

he heads home again lump Kiwanuka in with the general singer-songwriter masses would be to seriously underestimate his potential. The performances are note-perfect but never overproduced, and the album takes the listener on a journey from

the souljazz swing of opener ‘Tell Me A Tale’ to the gentle lullaby sway of recent single ‘I’m Getting Ready’. Whatever the style or the setting, though, the softly-sung lyrics are as well considered as the guitar playing, and often it’s this musicianship that makes him such an exciting prospect, especially live. Kiwanuka’s live shows sensibly rely on his talents and charisma, leaving the tricks of the ‘stage show’ to those who need it. His uncanny knack of evoking the heyday of soul makes for an intimate event even in larger venues, and he and his band manage to recreate and often surpass the already solid live recordings. It’s a reputation borne out of a couple of years of hard touring (with the odd highprofile TV appearance thrown in, such as on Later … with Jools Holland in the UK and The Late Show with David Letterman in the US), and a summer of festivals leading up to his current European tour, which will see him make his second Danish stop of 2012, graduating from Lille Vega in April to the upcoming performance at Store Vega. All of which make the prospects for this show unquestionably good, but on recent history, is it still too early to predict the longer-term outlook for Kiwanuka? Perhaps, but as with any higher-class musician, the impression is that he’s not in it for the fame or the chart positions, and that will only ever be a good thing for any discerning music fan. Stengade; 21:00; 60kr After playing drums for various LA-based bands such as Deerhoof, Cass McCombs and Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti, Cohen, 37, has finally released his own debut album, Overgrown Path (2012). His sound is reminiscent of Tame Impala, the founding fathers of psychedelic rock. Nevertheless, he remains on the fringes − most of his fans discovered him through word of mouth on BBC Radio 6. This gig is also a great excuse to visit Stengade, a location that bears an uncanny similarity to some of Berlin’s dilapidated nightclubs.

Falconer Salen; 20:00; sold out The atmospheric east London outfit have made a massive impression on the industry since the release of their debut single ‘Crystalised’ and classic self-titled album in 2009. The release of their new album, Coexist, has only fanned the flames − their hushed, measured and cerebral style of electronic rock is proving as popular now as in 2009. The Londoners have experienced unparalleled success in Scandinavia, partly due to a successful marketing campaign and the parallels between the melancholic aesthetic of their music and Scandinavia’s alternative rock scene. Store Vega; 20:00; 185kr Going from strength to strength in the past few years, the Danish four-piece have become one of Denmark’s biggest alternative acts. Drawing in the crowds on the back of their attractive debut album, The Life and Death of the Male Body (2010), which included the hit single ‘Balcony’, the quartet built on this sturdy platform, releasing The Arrogant late last year. Tying acousticbased musings to their festivalrock style has led to acclaim far beyond Denmark’s borders, so book up fast to avoid being turned away at the door.

Swedish House Mafia

Forum; 20:00; 570-970kr Never exactly aiming for anything alternative or forthcoming, the Swedish trio of accomplished electronic dance music DJs and producers − Axwell, Steve Angello and Sebastian Ingrosso − were always an all-out commercial circus aiming to fill as many supersized venues as humanly possible; the music’s just a by-product. A pile of tracks including ‘Miami 2 Ibiza’, ‘One’ and ‘Save the World’ have kept the winters warm for the Ibiza crowd all over the globe. Their current tour, which started this month and ends in March, will be their last before a hiatus.

 November 14 at Store Vega EWIND THE clock to the late ‘80s/early ‘90s in the UK. Practically every major news tabloid is crammed with one headline after another documenting the cultural phenomenon that has become known as ‘Acid house’. The rave scene is at its primordial best, propelled by a nation of discontented citizens who are changing England’s reputation as a country of hooligans to that of one nation under a groove. Bands like Tangerine Dream, 808 State and Orbital are at the forefront of the musical and cultural revolution, playing a blend of spaceage electronic music that’s heavy in short, often-looped samples and squelchy synthesiser inputs. Destroyer

Store Vega; 21:00; sold out Founded by Vancouver-born Dan Bejar in 1995, Destroyer − once a solo project − has evolved into one of Canada’s best-known bands. Holding a special place in rock history, Destroyer’s heavily poetic agenda chimes with the ironic sense of humour upon which Morrissey’s dynasty was founded while, at the same time, evoking the matter-of-factness that listeners find bewildering in Leonard Cohen’s lyrics. No group on Earth compares to Destroyer, whose creative spurs have distanced the band from any previously known genre of music. Try internet forums for tickets.

Store Vega; 21:00; 200kr The Danish electro-rock outfit have been exporting the chintzy, clean Italo-disco, electro-pop sound that has defined Copenhagen’s club district Kodbyen for a few years now, playing gigs across Europe. Riding the wave of synth-pop that’s imbued the underground club scene for the past few years − alongside the likes of Cut Copy, Little Dragon and Austra − the release of School of Euphoria in February this year has added to their notoriety, and they pride themselves on a primitive type of electro influenced by ‘90s British electronica. As good today as they were two decades ago Store Vega. Orbital are on stage performing to a venue that’s far from sold out. Phil and Paul Hartnoll, the two brothers who make up the band, seem as energetic as ever as they step onto the pitch black stage with their characteristic bright torches either side of their heads. A few white flashes later, and the brothers have tucked themselves behind a massive array of analogue instruments, flanked by an elaborate series of light devices and smoke canisters that form the colossal spacecraft-like stage on which they will perform. ‘Time Becomes,’ the opening track of their eponymous 1993 album, is the first of many good tunes on the evening as the looped sample of a Michael Doorn line from Star Trek shatters the silence. This is followed by a series of short tracks in quick succession during which samples from Belinda Carlisle’s ‘Heaven is a Place on Earth’ and Bon Jovi’s ‘You Give Love a Bad Name’ do their bit to woo the

commercial-music appetite of the Danish crowd. It’s midway through the show and Orbital are in fifth gear. The songs are longer and more driven, and the light show accompanying them is out of this world. The stage is aflame in a kaleidoscope of clashing colours and neon beams that crisscross the fog-filled haze. Down below, the crowd, most of whom are in their 30s and 40s, are awestruck, much like this reviewer. The last time the floor reverberated like it did on Wednesday night had to be back when

dubstep mammoths Skream and Benga performed in 2010, so credit is due for the brilliant acoustics on the evening. The show ends as it started, with the Hartnoll brothers exiting the pitch black stage after the curtain call, their faces alight with the content of two seasoned veterans of the electronic music scene. If Orbital are as good as they were in Vega on Wednesday, I can only wonder what they must have been like when they first burst onto the scene at the start of the ‘90s. ALLAN MUTUKU-KORTBÆK

Nightlife Bobi Bar Klareboderne 14, Cph K; free adm Bobi Bar is one of the oldest and most prestigious anchors of Copenhagen’s jazz history. Playing old records and serving up a host of ales and bitters, the bar is one of the inner-city’s few remaining relics, practically unchanged since the 1950s. Just be careful not to answer your mobile phone or take out a camera indoors: it’s an in-house rule that the owners have been strict about ever since the invention of the Nokia 2210. Newly-formed duo Leon Somov & Jazzu, hailed as one of the best Baltic music groups around, will perform live here on Saturday. Jazzu’s soulful vocals blend with the upbeat electronica of Somov, spiced up by unexpected jazz tones. The beat goes on into the after-party with DJ Amanddy.

The Secret Jazzhouse Society Orchestra Niels Hemmingsens Gade 10, Cph K; 23:00; 70kr Once upon a time, jazz was to the Friday night crowd what dance, techno or house music is today. Back then, when you hit the city late at night, it was for live music and a couple of bourbons, not repetitive beats and a couple of pills. Attempting to recreate this buzz, the Jazzhouse has invited Onde Tommy (that’s Evil Tommy!) and his funk orchestra, a group of seven jazz musicians who’ll be churning out the very best jazz and funk. Two DJs will then follow, playing everything from experimental Cuban salsa through to spiritual jazz records. Edgar Ariza KB18, Kødboderne 18, Cph V; 22:00; 50kr This week, KB18 will be visited by the Malmö-raised technohouse DJ, whose background as a drummer has made him something of a natural beatsmith. Ever since he was old enough to put dirt in his mouth, Erik B Duckert has been attracted to the ground level and below. The attraction of the underground, he says, is that: “When you’re looking at a city from its gutters, you see both the faeces and the silk.” His favourite sewers are those of Copenhagen and in particular those of Nørrebro and Amager, but any place where trash is tossed and skirts are worn, he will want to rest his eyes and say his piece.

GOING UNDERGROUND

No means yes: Notes from a late night on Skelbækgade IT IS PAST midnight on a weekday and I’m biking home half-drunk through Skelbækgade. A young man is crossing the big intersection close to the train station at the end of the infamous street. There are no cars on the road. He has a guitar strapped to his back and a more than voluptuous black woman in a short skirt and a big jacket fastened tightly to his wrist. The streetlights cast an orange hue on the odd couple, and for a brief moment the whole scene looks kind of romantic in an urban street-life kind of way. But there is something in the way they move. The young guitar player walks with his weight shifted slightly backwards, like a child opposing the direction dictated by his parents. The woman seems oblivious. She is dragging him along while chatting in that loud but detached way you sometimes experience when people use their phone on the bus or queuing at the supermarket: like they are the only people in the world, like the receiving end of the telephone is a magic void into which they can channel their thought-stream directly. Live and unfiltered. It’s impossible to make out the chatter and obvious the guitar player doesn’t care. He is not there to talk. On the other side of the road, there’s a concrete ramp leading to a deserted spot underneath the overpass near the tracks. That’s their destination. The darkness. Now, there is nothing unusual spotting a hooker with a john on Skelbækgade, but the constellation they’re forming speaks volumes. Why is he feigning resistance at the same time as he is obviously

following along? What is he saying with that gesture? Of course, it could be a lot of things or nothing at all. But it might also be something. It might be a symbolic illustration of the nature of eroticism played out in the slight shift in balance of a human body. Indulge me here: think back to the last time you were erotically exited − not sexually active − no sex at this point, just excitement. If you think like me, the erotic moment present in your mind is one of undressing rather than total nudity, proximity rather than transgression, ‘no’ instead of ‘yes’. Unbearable tension. Silence. They are all key elements in the mystery of attraction, and they are exactly the kind of playful movements that risk annulment in the vulgarity of the financial contract. When you purchase something, it’s yours. That’s the deal. When sex becomes a commodity like a phone, a burger or a tiara, you skip the play of eroticism: i.e the secrecy, insecurity and approximation. You shift from play to consumption and bust open the doors to a dimension of lordship and boredom. I think that’s what the young guitar player instinctively knows as he is crossing the street. I think that his body is responding to the vulgar triviality displayed by his female companion and tilts back in a spasm of erotic desperation, trying to establish some kind of friction, some kind of suspense – a ‘no’ to contrapose the extreme ‘yes’ of the situation. The couple reaches the ramp and descends into the darkness. I bike on home wondering if, from the point of view of eroticism, moral condemnation always fuels its opposite.

Black & White NEW Statens Museum for Kunst, Sølvgade 48, Cph K; Sat & Sun 10:30-16:30; tickets: 45kr, children free adm; 3374 8494, smk@smk.dk; www.smk. dk This workshop will let your children run riot with paper. MAR “... walked in his moccasins” Nationalmuseet, Prinsens Palæ, Ny Vestergade 10, Cph K; Sun 12:00-15:00; www.natmus.dk Bring your children to experience the living history and culture of North American Indians. Will your children be a strong warrior or a beautiful princess? At this workshop they will choose their Indian names, build and decorate their own tepee, listen to ancient myths about nature and learn from them, and make their own jewellery, inspired by the exhibition ‘Powwow’. Don’t miss it! It’s free! MAR Story Time Books & Company, Sofievej 1, 2900 Hellerup; Tue mornings 09:30-10:00; free adm; www. booksandcompany.dk Every Tuesday morning, storyteller Sara Albers performs stories, poems, and finger plays. She entertains, inspires and captivates kids’ imaginations, making Tuesday mornings a magical experience for all. SA

EVEN THE most ardent detractors of Danish weather have to admit that every winter’s cloud has a silver lining. The cold brings with it the chance to experience moments of memorable hilarity – is there anything funnier than watching your dad slip over? – or romantic rapture as you cling to your better half or object of desire. So, who has never dreamed of experiencing the feeling of flying and moving as elegantly and as lightly as a sylph? Barring heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures and an all-clear to skate on the Lakes, here are the artificial rinks where you can realise your fantasies! Blågårds Plads Blågårds Plads 1, Cph N; opens Dec 1, open Mon-Fri 10:00–21:00, Sat 11:00–18:00, Sun 11:00–17:00; free adm, skate hire 40kr per hour (rental of skates stops one hour before closing); 3535 7770, idraetshuset@kff.kk.dk; www. fritidkbh.dk In winter this square wears its most beautiful look thanks to the lights and colours of Christmas as it turns into an ice skating rink. Enjoy the atmosphere of the Christmas Celebration at one of the most historical and charming places in the heart of Nørrebro, surrounded by Kai Nielsen’s early 20th century statues of crafts and artsmen. The community centre offers hot chocolate, coffee, sandwiches and soups.

Rhythm for toddlers NEW Anna Kirke, Bjelkes Allé 19-21, Cph N; Sat 10:00-11:00; www. annakirke.dk Where small children aged one to three can play and enjoy music and movement. And afterwards, have a cup of free coffee or tea or some fruit. RKM Rhythm for toddlers 2 Børnekulturstedet, Enghavevej 42, Cph V; Sat 09:0011:00; 8220 5280, boerne@kff. kk.dk; www.bks-vesterbro.dk The kids learn through rhythm about movement, music, socialising and interaction with the outside world. For kids aged 1-2 until 11:00 and 2-3 until 12:00. MAR Water – a world of adventures Experimentarium, Tuborg Havnevej 7, Hellerup; ends Dec 31, open Mon-Fri 09:30-17:00, Tue 09:30-21:00, Sat and Sun 11:00-17:00; under 2s free, under-11s 105kr, over-11s 160kr, students 105kr; contact 3927 3333 or info@experimentarium.dk This water adventure features more than 50 activities and experiments. But don’t be afraid of getting your clothes wet – unless you ask for it – as this is a “bone-dry ride through the wet element”. You get to fight the power of the sea, save someone who has fallen overboard from a ship and experience giant surf waves.

NIELS AHLMANN OLESEN

Arty Christmas Markets CHRISTMAS comes early in Denmark and so do these quirky markets. If you’re stuck in a rut again about what to get cousin Caroline or how to impress your new high society Hellerup chums, why not try one of these arty farty markets? Nab yourself a steal or even a one-off piece by a talented student. You may end up walking away with a watercolour by the next Monet or an exquisite jewellery box from an upcoming Fabergé.

Apple Cake with cinnamon

BY MIHAI BICA

Ingredients: 8-10 medium-sized apples about 1kg 5 Tbsp sugar nuts and dried fruit (different flavours) to fill the insides of the apples 1 Tsp cinnamon For the sponge: 5 eggs 5 Tbsp sugar 5 Tbsp flour 2 Tsp baking powder

AS CHRISTMAS time approaches, there are always a few flavourings that come to mind with regards to the holiday menu, but if I had to pick just one – for its distinctive taste, its unmistakable scent and its versatility in use – it would have to be cinnamon. You can put it in your coffee or tea, the gløgg that you sip at functions or whilst enjoying a quiet evening in, or on the top of a pecan Danish swirl. But that’s just the beginning: listen, I’ve got a secret to share. Where I come from – and I mean the very core, my family – we have this recipe that we always prepare on special occasions. I have it for my birth-

day, my cousins do the same, even my grandparents go with it sometimes, when they feel like doing something festive on their birthdays. I’m talking about apple cake. I love it the most when we make it for Christmas though, because it is nobody’s cake in particular, but it is OUR cake and it somehow brings us together. A good cake is a reason to have more friends over, and an even better one for polishing off your main courses pronto so you can get your share of what you are actually waiting for. And since it’s apple, there is no better complement than some cinnamon.

Restaurant Kiin Kiin Guldbergsgade 21, Cph N; 3535 7535; open Mon-Sat 17:30-21:00; four-course menu 450kr, seven-course 775kr (with wine menu 1450kr); www.kiin.dk There are only two Thai restaurants in the whole world that have been awarded a Michelin star. One of them is in London, the other one is Kiin Kiin, which you’ll find in the heart of Nørrebro. And it’s well deserved. Kiin Kiin isn’t just a restaurant, it’s an experience, a place where every little detail is thought through. PDR Reinwald’s Farvergade 15, 1463 Cph K; open Mon-Sat 14:00-24:00 (kitchen closes at 22:00); 3391 8289; fivecourse menu with wine 850kr, other dishes 75-215kr; www. reinwalds.dk Serving lunch and dinner, a director’s script-length of choices confronts you at Reinwald’s. It’s a who’s who of classic French and Frenchinspired Danish dishes as well as a monthly set menu. Any chef would be proud of this. SC 1.th Herluf Gade 9, Cph K; 3393 5770, 1th@1th.dk; 1,250kr per person; www.1th.dk 1.th is a gourmet restaurant with a twist. Tucked away behind a hard-to-find door on the first floor to the right of a typical Copenhagen apartment, the restaurant is based around the concept of the dinner party with guests stepping into what appears to be a private apartment and then being utterly spoilt by their hosts. The monthly set menu costs 1,250kr and has a whopping ten courses, and you can tell them in advance of any food quirks you might have and they will personalise the menu for you. Terrific food, friendly and attentive service and a unique setting. CS

Hero Kitchen Jarmersplads 3, Cph V; open: Tue-Thu 17:00-23:00, Fri-Sat 17:00-02:00 (kitchen closes 22:00); 6969 6000; price range: 40-125kr; www.herokitchen.dk Hero, located on the ground floor of the Fox Hotel, which opened in June of this year, captures the authenticity and atmosphere of a Japanese street kitchen (izakaya). So much more than another stock standard Copenhagen sushi place, it offers a delicious range of snacks, salads, small dishes, sushi, meats from the grill, Yakitori (skewered meats), tempura, sashimi, and, of course, a range of sweets. Its Scallop Katafi is the best in the city, while the Yakitori left us speechless – it was divine. Reasonably priced, impeccably chic and unbelievably tasty, this is the place to go if you want to be a hero amongst the trendsetters. JOS Cocks & Cows Gammel Strand 44, Cph K; burgers; open Mon-Thu 11:0024:00, Fri-Sun 11:00-02:00; 78118kr per burger, 70kr per cocktail; 6969 6000; cows@cocks.dk; www.cocksandcows.dk Eat a burger (cow) and wash it down with a cocktail (cock). The burgers are huge and must be eaten with a fork and knife to prevent a mess. But they’re delicious, and the vegetarian, beef, pork and chicken options mean that even the fussiest eater will find something. DC Oysters & Grill Sjællandsgade 1B, 2200 Cph N; open Mon-Sat 17:30-24:00, Sun 12:00-21:00; oysters cost 1535kr each, main courses cost 135-185kr; 7020 6171; www.cofoco.dk Oysters & Grill is not rocket science, yet it gives diners in Copenhagen access to fresh and delicious food at reasonable prices with an emphasis on seafood, fish and meats, which are prepared simply and flavourfully. NA

Estimated time of preparation: 90 mins

SPOON FIVE tablespoons of sugar into a round bowl. Peel and core the apples and arrange them tightly squeezed together in the bowl. Stuff the apples with nuts and dried fruit (currants, apricots, but be careful with raisins as these tend to burn when exposed) and sprinkle generously with cinnamon.

Chai:Wong Thorvaldsensvej 2, Frederiksberg; open Mon-Sat 11:00-24:00; SouthEast Asian; starters 55-125kr, mains 135195kr; www.chaiwong.dk Inspired by a trip to various Asian cities, the owners have brought authentic Asian cooking to Frederiksberg. Enjoy a lychee mojito as you study the menu, and be sure to try the prawns with rice noodles. For dessert, order the banana cake with salted coconut ice cream, then stagger home, full of good food and wine. CS BioMio Halmtorvet 19, 1700 Cph V; open daily 12:00-24:00 (later Fri and Sat), kitchen open 12:0022:00; 3331 2000; starters 75kr, mains 135kr; www.biomio.dk Located in an old warehouse next to trendy Kødbyen, Bio Mio is certainly unusual for conservative Copenhagen. It’s stylish without being pretentious, fast enough that you don’t go crazy waiting for food, and loud enough that you can make a racket without anyone raising an eyebrow. JH Cap Horn Nyhavn 21, Cph K; open MonFri 10:00-00:00, Sat-Sun 09:0000:00; 3312 8504; starters from 99kr, main courses from 139kr, desserts from 39kr; see www. caphorn.dk for special events Cap Horn’s simple menu boasts a fine selection of organic, homemade Danish fare with a touch of seasonal influence. There were two highlights: the veal, pumpkin, mushrooms and potatoes with amazing truffle sauce (a “best ever veal experience”) and the chocolate cake (“Oh My God”), which was possibly the best chocolate cake ever! MM Karriere Bar Flæsketorvet 57, Cph V; open: Thu 16:00-24:00, Fri 16:00-04:00, Sat 18:00-04:00; 3321 5509; www. karrierebar.com An edgy bar where the music and gossip don’t end, Karriere Bar, hidden in a corner of Kødbyen, should be number one on your list for dining and cocktails. Cover the bowl and leave it in the oven for as long as it takes to get the apples soft and juicy. Meanwhile, prepare the sponge mixture. In order to do that, the eggwhites must be beaten first separately. Then add the egg yolks along with the sugar, flour and the baking powder, and gently blend them together. If you can see syrup forming around the apples you are on the right track! If not, give the apples a little longer. Make sure you remove the lid off the bowl after the apples have softened, and pour the sponge mixture on top. Leave it in the oven for about another half an hour until the mixture starts to shape up. When the cake is ready, take it out of the oven and flip it out onto a big plate, bottoms-up! Sprinkle more cinnamon. Doesn’t it look lovely and Christmassy?

All’s well that ends well for this fairy tale of puppy dog tails ONCE UPON a time in a kingdom far, far away there was a castle: Eremitagesletten (check!) And there was a huntsman’s cottage: Peter Lieps Hus, check! And there were two weary, hungry interlopers in a foreign land: us, check! It was thus, in fairy tale mode, that I entered Dyrhavn for the first time and walked through the forest to the Peter Lieps Hus restaurant. It proved to be an appetising stroll, and it wasn’t just the sight of the deer roaming free, majestic and graceful. Centenarian trees leave the area thick with scents from the dying leaves on the damp ground, oozing their last drop of life, flushed with autumnal colour. I recalled Keats. “Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness! Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun.” It was like going back in time, as if I was mingling with the past. The park, which has a long and distinguished history, has always been a favourite haunt of the royals – for many centuries, they owned it. Valdemar the Victorious (1202-1241) originally acquired it when it was it was a smaller area of land known as Boveskov, and it was one of his descendants, Frederik III (1648-1670), who decided to fence it and populate it with deer from the surrounding area. His son, Christian V (1670-1699), then extended the area to include the village of Stokkerup (he pretty much relocated all its occupants!) and turned it into a park suitable for hunting with dogs – a hobby that he picked up as a young prince at the court of the French king Louis XIV. Peter Lieps Hus was named after Dyrehaven’s first gamekeeper – the huntsman of the piece. Behind its heavy, dark solid wooden door, it provides those who have braved the park a warm, rustic shelter. Its décor is sophisticated, but also reflects its environment. Hunting trophies and historical portraits adorn the walls, which are illuminated by tender lights, suffused with small lamps and candles, reverberating the colours of the forest. It is a venue suggestive of hidden treasures, ancient gestures and long-held knowledge. We immediately felt at home. While the staff’s welcome was friendly, it was lovely to enter a restaurant where our German Shepherd Dog puppy, Anuk, also felt welcome (maybe we should have mentioned her when we were walking through the park! But the deer didn’t seem to mind). There were hugs, goodies and even some conversation, and it was clear the waiting staff love dogs and have expertise in the area.

No, the walls aren’t made of marzipan, and there is no resident huntsman, but don’t let that put you off from embracing its fairy tale ethos

As a starter, I could not say no to the promise of Fresh smoked salmon accompanied by French bread. It may be a simple and tasty combination, but I was immediately vindicated as the fillet melted in my mouth. Next came the Fillet of steak, served with fried potatoes, carrot, aubergine, courgette, Café de Paris butter and bouquet garni. The fillet, cooked rare of course, was served with an excellent Café de Paris butter, whose secret may lie forever buried with its inventor, so difficult is it to prepare.

This deceptively named sauce, which was actually concocted in Geneva in 1941, went particularly well with the vegetables, which has been cooked on the griddle and brushed with extra virgin oil. The first gastronomic advice I received moving to Copenhagen was: “Taste the restaurant’s Danish apple pie, it is one of the most delicious I’ve ever eaten!” And it was true: After the first bite − or this being a fairy tale, the first kiss − I wished it would never end. The slightly sour aftertaste of the apple, paired with

the sweetness of the fruit and cinnamon, and the fragrance of the base combined perfectly with the buttery white fresh cream. From that moment on, I knew life would never be the same again. Satisfied and satiated, we left the restaurant after heartedly thanking everyone. Our hunger, walking to the restaurant, had reached a ripe old age before dying peacefully in utter contentment. And then we all lived happily ever after. The end!

Get your act together and watch this masterpiece MARK WALKER

The Act of Killing (15) Dir: Joshua Oppenheimer; UK/ Indo Doc, 2012, 115 mins

Premiered November 8 Playing Nationwide

I

T IS EXTREMELY rare when a film transcends both its medium and the idiosyncrasies of its subject matter to become a universally potent experience, relevant to every human who watches it, regardless of their nationality, class or personal history. The Act of Killing is one such experience. A mid-60s attempted coup in Indonesia − which was thwarted and possibly organised by the military − led to widespread fear of an imminent communist uprising. The government then hired thugs − or gangsters, as they still view themselves today − to start a systematic genocide of all suspected communists and communist sympathisers. Easily the most engaging of the CPH:DOX headliners this year, the film traces several of these war criminals, who during this genocide of 1965-66 partook in the murder and rape of over 500,000 (possibly twice that figure) alleged communists, trade unionists and ethnically Chinese at the unofficial behest of the newlyinstalled military government (and various western powers who feared the spread of communism in Asia), which effectively became, and remains, a dictatorship. Since its festival debut, the film has garnered a great deal of praise from such respected luminaries of the documentary medium as Werner Herzog and Errol Morris − both of whom lend their name to the film as executive producers. Full credit goes to director Joshua Oppenheimer for finding a unique perspective on a national trauma that is so deeply rooted

Guess you’ve got to have watched the film for this to make any kind of sense ...

that many Indonesians can, or will, not talk about. By having the perpretrators act out their own memories of their terrible crimes, the filmmakers delve far deeper into the genocide than one might expect one could from talking to the victims alone − many of whom would fear retribution for opening their mouths. These thugs, many of whom are now in their twilight years, have plenty to say about the atrocities they committed; they are even boastful, viewing themselves as heroes. This viewpoint is shared by the national broadcasters as we are shown the killers being applauded on state

television. This ‘heroism’ was tapped to facilitate the making of a feature film: one that stars and is based on the recollections of these men. Viewing this as an opportunity to portray themselves as ‘Indonesian Al Pacinos or Robert De Niros’, the men are more than willing to contribute fully to the process. Of course there is no such film, just the one we are watching. Anwar Congo, a man now in his 70s, was one of the more prolific and feared of these ‘gangsters’, and he effectively serves as the protagonist on our journey into the darkest chapter of Indonesia’s troubled history. Although

lenging view of the world, a frighteningly real one that is far from being fictional. There is no good. There is vulnerability, self-delusion and humanity − because humanity, we learn, can also be uniquely evil, and each of us has the potential for it. Somehow, this is what holds our attention to the film, although our sympathy, or pity even, is too much to ask for in relation to these monsters. The film’s masterstroke is revealing these monsters as human, and therefore recognisable. This is how it manages to touch us − and in doing so, the film transcends its medium.

You’ll need an exorcism to forget this one The Possession (15) Dir: Ole Bornedal; US horror/ thriller, 2012, 92 mins; Natasha Calis, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Kyra Sedgwick Premiered November 22 Playing nationwide

T Needless to say, this is not a film for vegetarians

he too boasts of his cruelty, there are chinks in his armour. He is troubled by terrible nightmares that he tells us are relentless, and his only respite from them comes in the form of dancing and boozing. He is constantly accompanied by a younger family man whose behaviour shifts between henchman, transvestite and personal masseur. Despite that friendship, Congo seems lonely and lost. It’s impossible to ask an audience to sympathise with Congo. In most films, we see a battle between good and evil. Here is a film that presents us with a much more complex and chal-

HE POSSESSION is based on an actual news article, but the true story is more interesting than the film itself. Due to a recent divorce, Clyde (Morgan) attempts to fulfil the ‘cool dad’ role in his daughters’ lives. He is essentially a good guy, though very

career-orientated, and Morgan delivers the simple, likeable persona well enough. One day Clyde and the kids randomly pass a garage sale on the way home. Being the cool dad he is, he offers to buy whatever his vegetarian youngest daughter, Em (Calis), wants. What she picks just happens to be a mysterious locked box with peculiar Hebrew carvings. You can probably see where this is going, based on the title alone, but Em eventually becomes possessed. The only twist in an otherwise bythe-book exorcism plot is that instead of a Christian demon, this is a Jewish one. And now it’s up to Cool Dad to save the

day! The real story behind the demon is fascinating. But it’s barely developed, as is the rest of the script. Nothing in the plot delves beyond the basics. There is interaction between Em and the demon, but half of it is in whispered Hebrew. It would have been far more interesting if we knew more about the relationship they develop, but we’re constantly at the edges. What is the significance of the items in the box? Why moths? The film is forgettable and would be less so if we were given more information. The atmosphere of the film is incredibly intense, with that intensity taking off in the very

first scene. The Possession does a decent job at maintaining a feeling of dread throughout. However, there are strange moments when the scene will simply cut off before any kind of real end. The butchering of these otherwise intense moments ruin the tempo of the film. If the director was trying to create a sense of oddness, it doesn’t work. Danish film director Ole Bornedal, who wrote and directed the 1994 Nightwatch, falls surprisingly short. Although he has directed a few well-received Danish films, he can’t seem to get the formula right with Hollywood. ELIZABETH DELLAPENNA

New this Week Rise of The Guardians (7) Dir: Peter Ramsey; US Animation, 2012, 90 mins; Chris Pine, Alec Baldwin, Jude Law, Isla Fischer, Hugh Jackman This whimsical family affair is right in time for the holiday season, with the likes of Santa Claus (now tattooed and with a Russian accent), the Easter Bunny, Sandman and the tooth fairy recreated as an ass-kicking Avengers-like dream team ready to fight the Boogeyman. The plot may not be more than the familiar oversimplified good vs evil tale, but the image of Sandman’s golden dinosaurs marching through a sleeping town will stay with both parent and child long after they leave the cinema. LL

Book Your Tickets Skyfall (11) Dir: Sam Mendes; UK/US action/thriller, 2012, 143 mins; Daniel Craig, Javier Bardem, Ralph Fiennes, Judi Dench, Naomie Harris, Ben Whishaw, Bérénice Marlohe Forget the latter Brosnan follies, the much maligned Quantum of Solace and even fan-favorite Casino Royale because, for the first time in nearly two decades, nobody is doing it better. MW

Searching for Sugar Man (15) Dir: Malik Bendjelloul; Swe/ US/SA doc, 2012, 86 mins If you disappear into obscurity after an undistinguished music career, you can always take pride in the fact that halfway across the world a nation is being inspired by your music to start a revolution against a racist oppressive regime. That’s at least what happened in the case of US ‘70s rocker Rodriguez, who was a hero to many during the South African struggle against apartheid. Swedish filmmaker Bendjelloul follows two South African fans as they try to find out what happened to their hero, and the result is as compelling as a real-life detective story. LL

Avoid like the Plague Ted (15) Dir: Seth MacFarlane; US comedy, 2012, 106 mins; Mark Wahlberg, Mila Kunis, Seth MacFarlane A tale of Peter Pan-esque protracted male adolescence and ‘broversus-ho’ ethics, this is a film that squarely relies on the comic potential of random flotsam and jetsam pop culture, tongue-in-cheek offensiveness and state-of-the-art foul-mouthed puppet humour. As with much of MacFarlane’s work, it is devoid of any trace of sophistication or finesse, and is fitfully amusing thanks only to the occasional deadpan shock-value jokes offered by Mark Wahlberg’s crooked straight-man performance. AS

Taken 2 (15)

Hope Springs (11)

Argo (15)

Sinister (15)

Dir: Olivier Megaton; US action, 2012, 95 mins; Liam Neeson, Maggie Grace, Famke Janssen, Leland Orser The first film was a guilty pleasure that worked only for Neeson’s fast-paced and high-octane action sequences, and in spite of a mind-numbingly dreadful performance from Maggie Grace. Now they’re both back, but this time with frenetic fight scenes that appear to be stolen straight out of Die Hard, and even more screen time for Grace. Skip it. LL

Dir: David Frankel; US romcom, 2012, 100 mins; Meryl Streep, Tommy Lee Jones, Steve Carell, Mimi Rogers While the trailer makes this film look like a syrupy sex romp, only a mournful tale of relationship turmoil lurks beneath the slapstick jokes and sarcastic jibes of Hope Springs. Longtime couple Kay (Streep) and Arnold (Jones) embark on an intensive marriage counselling class in a last-ditch effort to save their marriage. The film raises faint hope and humour during the counselling session scenes, but the therapist Bernie Feld (Carell) unfortunately then sends the couple out on intimacy exercises, shudder-worthy attempts at vulgar comedy. Short on laughs and drama alike, Hope Springs reduces Kay and Arnold’s reconciliation efforts to 100 minutes of bickering, crying, and attempts at intimacy. LR

Dir: Ben Affleck; US thriller, 2012, 120 mins; Ben Affleck, John Goodman, Bryan Cranston, Alan Arkin, Clea Duvall, Tate Donovan, Victor Garber While Affleck has gone to some lengths to deliver a restrained and tasteful film, the script itself is determined to show off, with the climax taking every opportunity to ratchet up the drama quite shamelessly. It might make for highly entertaining cinema, but falls short in convincing us of the narrative’s authenticity. For a film about disguise, this film masquerades as one belonging to the dangerous fringes of political filmmaking, but reveals itself to be quite mainstream and, like Affleck himself, a little more ordinary that it really should be. MW

Dir: Scott Derrickson; US horror, 2012, 110 mins; Ethan Hawke, Vincent D’Onoofrio, Michael Hall D’Addario, Juliet Rylance What Sinister lacks in innovation it makes up for in jump-inducing frights and gruesome imagery. This flick will definitely please horror fans but might not be the thing for the squeamish. LL

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 (11) Dir: Bill Condon; US fantasy, 2012, 119 mins; Kristin Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner, Dakota Fanning, Ashley Greene, Nikki Reed, Michael Sheen The enormously lucrative franchise that is The Twilight Saga finally comes to an end. And thank god for that. As we’ve come to expect from the last four films, Part 2’s soap-operaesque script, lacklustre direction and mind-numbing melodrama are the film’s biggest problems. But perhaps the scariest part of all comes with the introduction of some new characters, which leaves the door open for potential spin-offs. Now there’s a scary thought. LR

Also Playing Room 237 (15) Dir: Rodney Ascher; US doc, 2012, 102 mins Documentary film-maker Rodney Ascher delves into one of the most-beloved horror films of all-time, namely Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining and, with the help of five hard-core Shining fans, explores some of the many symbolic interpretations surrounding the film. Most of it is far-fetched and absurd, but all of it entertaining! LL

The Imposter (15) Dir: Bart Layton; UK doc, 2012, 94 mins; Frederic Bourdin, Carey Gibson, Beverly Dollarhide, Charlie Parker Despite a promising premise for an intriguing documentary about a French man trying to convince a Texas family that he is their missing son, there is a level of over-stylisation that irks. We are drowned in gratuitous pseudo-tension and filmic technique, which ultimately serve only to detract from the genuine craft involved in documenting this complex and fascinating story. DS

Moonrise Kingdom (7) Dir: Wes Anderson; US comedy, 2012, 94 mins; Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Frances MacDormand, Bruce Willis, Tilda Swinton, Jared Gilman, Katy Howard This newest feature film from debonair filmmaker Anderson has a brilliant cast, a wry script and stunning cinematography. It’s fashionable entertainment, and will no doubt please Anderson’s considerable fan-base. But under all the bells and whistles, is it just another coming-of-age, feel-good romcom – even a faintly insincere one at that? MW

The World Before Her SV1, Tue 22:30

PRACHI is an Indian tomboy who attends a camp for young militant Hindu females. The sari-clad tigress thanks her father for not having her aborted and hates Gandhi. Meanwhile, Shweta is a beauty queen who wants to get her claws into Bollywood, or maybe just a rich husband. With behind-closed-doors access to their worlds, Nisha Pahuja’s award-winning doc The World Before Her (SV1, Tue 22.30) offers some predictable “bluntly ironic contrasts”, concludes Hollywood Reporter. However, it was also impressed by how Pahuja pulled off the “tricky feat of providing intelligent and illuminating commentary on such a vast, sprawling subject as India within an accessible 90-minute package”.

The contrasts of Park Avenue: Money, Power and the American Dream (DR2, Tue 20:30), the latest doc from Alex Gibney, are also obvious, but he does it sublimely well, comparing two New York streets with the same name. One houses the country’s largest concentration of billionaires while the other, five miles away from Manhattan in The Bronx, is the US’s poorest area. The doc is one of several being screened as part of the Why Poverty? series, which is being shown in 180 countries worldwide. Another of them, Give us the money (DR1, Thu 23:00), grills Bono and Bob Geldof about whether charities like Live Aid has helped or hindered Africa’s poor. Elsewhere, the Guardian felt the BBC doc The Crusades (DRK,

Sat 20:00, Tue 18:10) was “storytelling of the highest quality”; A Lion called Christian (DR2, Thu 19:15) is like Born Free, but initially set on the King’s Road before moving to Kenya; The Real Sleeping Beauty (K4, Sat 19:45) is a BBC doc about a 16-year-old who can sleep for ten days at a time - sounds SV1, Tue 22:30 The World Before Her like a normal British teenager; while you owe him everything, we suspect you won’t get through ten minutes of Steve Jobs: iChanged the World (SV2, Mon 18:00) without reaching for your smartphone; and only watch Susan Boyle: An Unlikely Superstar (SV2, Tue 18:00) unless you want to feel like a hypocrite for deploring the lookist music industry and hating Susan for being so ugly.
