I COULDN’T believe my ears a couple of weeks ago. The young crowd in our office were slagging off The Lord of the Rings. It’s apparently boring and nerdish. I’d never really questioned its quality before, and it’s not like I grew up with a Middle-earth duvet set or ever read it, although I did read the more child-friendly The Hobbit (see G18 for our review). But it did make me question why I enjoyed watching the first LOTR film back in 2001. And there was a simple answer: that flaming cartoon! Rather frustratingly, Ralph Bakshi’s 1978 film only covers the first half of the book and it would always end with the continuity announcer giving viewers a 60-second potted version (500 pages worth!) of the rest of the film, which we would never see and which sounded really boring. Nevertheless, everyone wanted to see the film, and kids at school would create urban myths about how the filmmaker was dead or on his deathbed, and how it was

touch-and-go whether he would ever complete. In reality, United Artists (too busy investing in Heaven’s Gate) refused to fund a sequel. Children’s urban myths are the best. I remember how a fellow nine-year-old convinced us all that he’d seen a Star Wars prequel called Splinter of the Mind’s Eye in Germany. It existed, of course, but only as a book sequel to the original film, and it was quickly shelved when George Lucas saw the size of the queues. And until recently, I’d thought that Lucas’s plan to make nine films was another schoolyard porky, but now it appears that Disney will complete the story. Is Star Wars nerdish? Liking it as an adult probably is, but it certainly wasn’t like that with the original films. If anything, it was the other way round: as kids, how could we resist, as Brian De Palma observed after seeing an early screening, the Power of the Farts. Elsewhere this week, we’ve got more Christmas stuff – this time things to do during the holiday (see G2), a fantastic festive pub quiz (cover and G8) and present suggestions for the lovely ladies in your life – and that’s about it. So make like a hobbit and burrow into the warmth that is the Danish Christmas. Something tells me it’s going to be white.

Just look at The Killing and Borgen.” The plot sees ‘Vivienne’ decide she’s had enough of the CCC and decide to adapt a longlost Hitchcock script. Her actors vow to dispense of her quickly. LL

The pub is open throughout the holiday season, including both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

The Nutcracker

The context works well, but sadly the choreography is nothing special, and the dancing far from flawless. And the greatest disappointment is that Tchaikovsky’s fantastic music is played from speakers, instead of by an orchestra. Still, the kids loved it and the scenography and costumes by Queen Margrethe are beautiful, fun and shows a great love for detail. FBP

Staged by renowned international director Francisco Negrin, this production promises to be an imaginative and lively interpretation. Expect an impressive towering set, colourful projections, and a stage alive with a myriad of imaginatively costumed creatures and larger-than-life creepycrawlies. Even though Janáček is known and loved by opera-goers, it is probably fair to say that his time has not come yet. With contemporaries such as Puccini, Strauss, Mahler and Debussy, it is easy to overlook Janáček’s own masterpieces such as Sinfonietta and Glagolitic Mass. However, there is no denying that his operas are becoming increasingly popu-

lar on the world stage. Stylistically, his music has central European folk music overtones combined with tantalising dashes of modernism. Completed when the composer was at the ripe old age of 70, Den fiffige lille ræv contains some of his most experimental operatic concepts such as mime and ballet. Historically, this opera has a soft spot in the hearts of Danish opera lovers − dating back to a 1963 TV performance featuring the legendary Ellen Winther and Villy Hartmann. Originally inspired by a 1920s newspaper cartoon strip, Den fiffige lille ræv is often described as a comic opera. Interpretations of the piece have ranged from light-hearted children’s entertainment to fullblown tragedy, but ultimately the piece stands in stark contrast to some of Janacek’s more uncompromising works. Here, we have the story of a playful and overcurious little fox cub, captured in the forest by a gamekeeper, who decides to takes it home as a pet. After some time, the fox escapes back into the forest, leaving a trail of bloodshed and chaos behind her. Without giving too much away, the opera follows the lives and loves of both the fox and the forester, ending poignantly on the ever-recurring themes of life and death. There is symbolism aplenty in this meeting of the dual forces of human nature and nature itself. But the opera works on more than

one level. The simplicity and approachability of the piece make it ideal family fare. Indeed, the Opera is presenting it as “an imaginative and magnificent family show, recommended for children from the age of six”. The set design has been created by no less a designer than the acclaimed Es Devlin. The British creative genius has worked on sets together with stars such as Lady Gaga, Take That, Kanye West and the Pet Shop Boys. More recently, the spectacular closing ceremony at the London 2012 Olympics gave a taste of how Devlin loves to make full use of an arena or stage: in this case, a towering design that manages to combine the modernist aspects of Janacek’s music with the more fluid themes of wildlife. Sneak previews indicate that another highlight of the performance will definitely be the intricate origamiinspired costumes by the much sought-after designer Carole Bailey. The performances on 5, 12 and 27 January and 3 February will be aptly preceded by an origami workshop in which guests can attempt to master the skills of the classic Japanese art of paperfolding by shaping sheets of paper into the cunning vixen and other animals from the opera. On 5 and 12 January and 3 February, there will be a 90-minute workshop behind the scenes to witness the costumes at close hand and participate in a bit of amateur theatrics. he ‘80s had Dépêche Mode, the ‘90s had Nirvana, and the ‘00s had Napster. It seems that the further we move into the new millennium, the more the world of music has screamed for a defining genre to help define the new digital generation. Some will point to the electronic scene that’s exploded onto the dancefloors as the sound of the decade. But as Frenchman Wax-Tailor pointed out (aka Jean-Christophe Le Sauôt), slapping an electronic title on generic pop won’t help define anything.

“Electronic music means a lot and nothing at the same time,” he told the Indonesia Clubbing website. “Club music, trip-hop and electro-pop have all labelled that somehow. But they’re all totally different genres.” In many ways, Wax-Tailor’s music can also be lumped in with the electronic crowd. His background platform − which is kitted out with Macs, turntables and a thousand wires − would encourage most to call him nothing more than a celebrity underground DJ, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. “On a personal note, I’m a jazz child,” he told Indonesia Clubbing. “I grew up with that and then fell into the hip-hop world, but my references would always be 1970s pop and pro-

gressive rock, from the Beatles to Led Zeppelin.” What’s unique about Le Sauôt’s music is that it’s a complete mash-up of music samples intertwined with 1950s movie sound bites, onstage rap and string instruments. Oh, and there’s a flute player too. The mixture between acoustic and electronic instruments delivers a familiar yet original sound that isn’t generally found within live club acts. “Yes, there’s no denying the influence of electronic music,” Wax-Tailor told Bamboo Music. “But why not use it to add to what already exists, rather than just use it to replace instruments altogether?” The inclusion of the live cello on stage not only adds emphasis to the

strong bass beats coming out of the speakers, but also delivers a type of melancholy to the music. It’s much like the trip-hop scene that emerged in the late ‘90s through the likes of Massive Attack and Morcheeba. “Victor Hugo once said: ‘Melancholy is the happiness of being sad’. And I appreciate that,” Wax Tailor explained to the Welde Media website. “The cello gives a darker aspect to the music that just can’t be recreated through digital form alone.” In addition to the highly original set-up that Le Sauôt brings to his live performances, he uses cinematic visualisations in order to perceptually captivate his audience as much as possible. This approach also allows Wax-Tailor to visually carry his celebrity guests

along on tour, such ‘The Voice’, ‘Charlie Winston’ and ‘Charlotte Savary’, who appear on a projected screen and perform along with Wax-Tailor as if in person. Maybe the new millennium’s failure to so far find its own sound has led to musicians, like Le Sauôt, looking back at old influences to create something new. Wax-Tailor might not be this generation’s defining new sound, but he’s definitely got something we can admire until we make our minds up as to what will truly define us within the world of music.

The group’s euphoric sound, laced with pulsating electro beats, catchy bass lines and timely riffs has been received with ecstatic greetings. Comparable to the likes of Hot Chip, Chk Chk Chk and LCD Soundsystem, WhoMadeWho are now extremely popular on the continent, proudly flying the Danish flag for alternative dance rock. Releasing their second record, Brighter (2012), earlier this year, their music is a perfect mood setter for a late night.

I Break Horses & Ice Cream Cathedral

Lille Vega; 21:00; 130kr The Stockholm-bred shoe-gaze duo translate their fairy-tale surroundings into gauzy, distorted off-pop numbers, layered with eerie synth effects and wistful vocals. Releasing their debut, Hearts (2011), on Bella Union Records, the dreamy duo have already seen the lights of the US and are likely to make a heavy impact on the Scandinavian scene over the coming years. Interestingly, Copenhagen’s newest up-and-coming band Ice Cream Cathedral have also crept in an appearance here. The trio are now quickly gaining a reputation for their dreamy, retro-sounding tunes tinted with atmospheric electronic quirks.

Global, Nørre Alle 7, Cph N; 21:00; 60kr, 40kr students I Go Shout Plenty is an evening dedicated to Afrobeat music, hosted by the Nørrebro-based afrobeat group WhoAreYouPeople? This 14 member-strong live band blisters with energy and offers an upbeat musical experience unlike any other in the city. Although the doors open at 20:00, it’s likely that the party will run late into the night. On every club evening, the band hosts guest bands and/or guest DJs. This time around, the Swedish rock outfit Music is the Weapon, inspired by everything from Benin voodoo soul through to Nigerian hip-hop, will be pairing up with Søren Skov’s high-energy project.

Stone Sour

Store Vega; 20:00; 295kr Headed by Corey Taylor of Slipknot, the metal super group have evolved to become one of the biggest metal bands of the 21st century, peaking with their Grammy-nominated album Come What(ever) May (2006). The release of Audio Secrecy (2010) added fire to the flames, with the group’s tour climaxing in stadium-sized shows across Europe and the US. Unfortunately, Stone Sour appear to be in decline. It’s not that the age of Slipknot hoodies has given way to Bieber fever, but metal has moved on to new, burgeoning terrain where Stone Sour is no longer the fresh new face.

he last time I saw Spleen United perform, they were but a few metres from my tattered tent in the lakeside camping area at Roskilde Festival where they played a mammoth 24-hour set underneath a specially constructed hut. I’d heard plenty about the band and, as such, anticipated a solid 24 hours of quality music, only to be disillusioned by a seemingly neverending stream of downtempo electronica that didn’t quite pack a punch. It was a bold and dedicated act nevertheless, particularly considering that the electro rock quartet went on to perform on Roskilde’s Arena Stage later in the festival where their downtempo affiliations were flung out of

the window and replaced by rib-cracking rock with a vicious electronic twist. The show at Vega on Thursday night was a display of Spleen United at their best: on the edge and as driven as one could imagine. Slowolf did the opening honours with a heavy if not trippy excess of heavy percussive rock that, combined with a dazzling light show and a topless, impassioned drummer/lead singer, was a bit too much. The wind chimes were an impressive element of their show however,

and in a different context they may well be a solid act. Coming on in front of a static, eager-to-be-pleased audience, Spleen United took to the stage looking slightly nervy and opened their set in the same manner. However, a dexterous performance of their 2008 single ‘66’ got the audience in gear, before a thunderous, DepecheMode sounding thunderstorm saw the Nørlund brothers showcase their vocal talents whilst Rune Wehner and Janus Ringsted did their bit on the synth and

drums respectively. Four songs in and the Spleen United quartet were huddled around their secondary synthesiser and studio gear, each twisting and pushing different buttons, creating something of a frenzy that was amplified by a series of flashing strobe lights and a swarm of neon laser beams. Vocal samples of Opus III’s epic 1992 number ‘It’s a Fine Day’ interwoven with The Prodigy’s well known ‘No Good (Start the Dance)’ gem followed as Spleen United ventured deep into electronic territory. A return to their rock base saw tunes such as ‘Days of Thunder’ and ‘Dominator’ played towards the end, accompanied by the acid house-influenced ‘Sunset to Sunset’ – a track that set the pits alight as the front row audience scrambled onto each other’s shoulders. Spleen United veered more towards their electronic roots, playing with the usual passion and zest that one has come to expect from them and look set to end 2012 in style. Allan Mutuku-Kortbæk

Now a torchbearer for the so-called post-metal era – a genre of metal that exchanges incoherent aggression for more poetic yet equally disturbing musings – Kelly’s balladic songwriting is laced with genuine sensitivity and creative lyrics, as in the track ‘St. John, The Gambler’. It’s strange to think it has sprung from the same mind as the fearsome guitarist and vocalist of metal outfits Shrinebuilder, Mastodon and Weedeater.

Nightlife NASA Bar Gothersgade 8F, Cph K; Fri 22:00; free adm The only bar in town to boast a space-themed interior, the old NASA has made way for some interesting new decor. Moving away from a control station at Cape Cod to something a little more inventive and honest – the interior from Space Odyssey 2001 – it’s a gimmick that will never cease to entertain the vodka-soaked minds of the night crowd. The one pitfall is the music – even bands like The Strokes are considered too ‘indie’ for what is usually a discopop crowd. His driving beats paired with light synths make for positive-sounding vibes that will be welcomed with open arms in

Ideal Bar, Vega; 20:00; 70kr This Copenhagen-based wave pop outfit are all about self-confidence. The male duo, comprised of Jacob Bøchner Muller and Frederick Gøtzstche, team up to create a bizarre sound experiment. On the one hand is Muller’s vocal style, which at times sounds uncannily similar to the lead singer of Fleet Foxes, Robin Pecknold. On the other are some incredibly delicate tunes created on Gøtzstche’s Mac. It doesn’t seem likely that Jetsi will ever really take off as a serious electronic wave-pop duo. They lack production quality and are seemingly aiming at an audience too easily bowled over by the idea of hearing whatever is new. Daniel van der Noon this desperate climate. Son of Sun teams up tonight with fellow rapper Dandelion, Chin Ono, the first Scandinavian reggae artist to make a name for himself in the Jamaican corner of the dance market, and Youngblood Sound, known as Denmark’s youngest soundsystem, who plays weekly reggae on Christiania Radio. COSY, CHAOTIC and oozing with charisma, Pegasus impressed the socks off us. “Everytime an experience” is their catch phrase here, and boy is that true. Now I hate to say it, but looking at this place from the outside, you’d think twice about venturing in. That, however, would be a downright calamity. I was always told to not judge a book by its cover, and now I’d happily say don’t judge a bar by its appearance. This little bar situated, just off Istedgade, is probably best known for its range of constantly changing top-class beers. But it should be known for a heck of a lot more: namely being a top-notch tapas restaurant, hosting top-class live bands and turning on various theme nights throughout the year. Take Saturday night for example, when we ventured into a Brazilian-themed evening. We could barely get a table the place was so packed! Upon entering Pegasus, it feels like you’ve been invited to a friend’s dinner party. The bar owners mingle with guests while sporadically sitting down at the tables to enjoy their food just as the guests would. It’s this casual, incredibly fun and almost southern European atmosphere that gives it a special touch. If you’re after a break from the cold, quiet and sterile environments of many Danish bars, this is the place to be. We began by enjoying some fantastic tapas. You can chose from 12 types and of course you decide which kinds you’d like. We struggled to get through our generously portioned platter, but the great thing was that we could nibble at it for a good three hours.

We enjoyed shrimp with chilli mango dressing, Scandinavian salmon, black foot ham, chorizo, and cod with Bechamel sauce. But it was the three different sausages that stole the show: smoked duck sausage, Italian grilled sausage with cardamom and Spanish sausage with paprika. That’s another thing about the place: it’s like France meets Italy meets Germany. Instead of limiting themselves to one culture, the best beer, food and wine have been chosen from around the world and combined at one bar. If it tastes good, they’ve got it. Now contrary to what I’d thought all these years, beer is actually the best accompaniment for tapas. And Pegasus serves over 250 different kinds! The ten beers on tap are changed every week, so every time you go in you can be sure to be surprised. We enjoyed some of their Christmas beers. The La Senne – a dark pale ale, very smooth and at the same time a little bitter – was our favourite. The Corsendonk Christmas was another winner as well as the Sorte Hvede – in contrast to the ale, it was fresh, light and easy to drink. On tap right now, Pegasus also features Hornbeer blonde, Øko Hvede, Golden

Santa and Esrom Kloster. As we gradually became stuffed with great food and drink, the Brazilian-themed live band kicked off … and boy did the party get started. While there wasn’t much room for a dancefloor, the regulars made sure there was … and I must admit, I couldn’t resist joining them. By the time we were all done with the tapas, the party was in full swing and so were the themed drinks: caprioskas of course. Between meeting the regulars and chatting extensively with the super-friendly bar staff, we managed to also try a few wines. The Sancere Sauvignon Blanc was a good drop, but the red Gigondas was exceptional. It was a smooth drop, but left a robust aftertaste. Perfect. There are now new Spanish and French wines on the menu that come highly recommended as well. So please, if you’re up for a different kind of bar – one with personality, charm and life – then make sure you visit Pegasus. And make sure you don’t leave without having a dance with one of the locals. EMILY MCLEAN

I’VE FOUND that the best cure for freezing weather is a bowl of hot soup and in this case, butternut squash soup. This soup in particular is not only delicious, but does the trick of warming me up quickly and thoroughly. Butternut squash is a delicious and wonderful winter squash, similar in flavour and colour to that of a pumpkin. I would argue, though, that it is more flavourful than a pumpkin. The most common preparation is usually roasting, but it is also often made into a soup or bisque. Cinnamon is regularly paired with butternut squash, but there are some tips in the recipe to alter the flavours.

Adding some chopped pieces of bacon adds a nice flavour. Some seared scallops also go nicely with or in the soup. The soup is so thick it could also be treated as a sauce (for example, it would go well with lamb). The recipe serves 12. Because it’s a lot of soup, here are the directions for freezing if you want to save some for later: ladle the cooled soup (without sour cream) into airtight containers, leaving about 2.5cm of space. The soup can be frozen for up to three months. To reheat the soup, run the container under hot water to release the soup. Heat it up with a bit of water, stirring occasionally.

Bring everything to a boil and then reduce to a simmer. Cook until the squash is tender, which should take around 20 minutes. Finally, it’s time to blend the ingredients into a soup. There are two ways to go about doing this. One is to work in batches, pureeing it in a blender until its texture is smooth. However, an immersion blender also does the trick, is generally easier and makes less of a mess − so that’s usually the route I take. After your soup is blended, stir in the lemon juice. This next point is important: season with salt. If you think the soup’s flavour is too mild or bland, just add salt. Salt enhances the natural flavours of food and is an absolutely amazing tool for any cook. Serve in a bowl or cup with a dollop of sour cream on top. Garnish with a sprinkle of cayenne pepper.

On the city’s most bootylicious street lies a groovalicious gem

we were smoothly transitioned into the next round. A presentation similar to the appetisers – with more orchids – served Beef wok with chili and Thai basil; Chicken wok with cashews, ginger and pineapple; and a Red curry (!) with duck, vegetables, lichee and cinnamon. A mildly hot bowl of white rice accompanied the colourful options. These plates were marginally less stellar, but still made our tongues water. The Beef wok was nicely chewy, and the Chicken with cashews had a bright flavour that paired well with the spicy (and I mean spicy) red chilli sauce. But I only had eyes for the Red curry

THAI FOOD is always one of my go-tos when I’m feeling like a change from my everyday and want something a little ... spicier. There’s something about a good curry that can turn a terrible rainy day into bliss. On the particular night that my friend and I walked into Restaurant Spicylicious, I was having a stressful day: my bike Champ had been stolen, I had a figurative ton of work to do before the week was through and it felt as if it was -10 outside. I met my friend outside the restaurant and just managed to save myself from slipping in the slush on Istedgade. With a sigh, we entered. But before I even tasted the curry, I felt the warmth of this place melt away my worries. The bustle of the street right outside disappears, and the ambience of Restaurant Spicylicious is as inviting and homely as can be short of eating in your own kitchen. They aren’t working with much space, but that serves their purpose even better. With small tables that can be combined for eight or separated for two, tall candles everywhere and a low ceiling, this eatery provides a warm canvas for a hyggelig dinner. As we peruse the menu, we notice that there is a good amount of options – not too many but not too few. You can pick from a variety of starters that sound so delectable that you can’t even begin to imagine what you’ll want to eat for your main course. Wok? Pad thai? I was combing through the curries when our friendly waiter Mike came by and asked for our drinks order. We were still lost when Mike made a suggestion: do the mixed menu of four starters, three mains and a medley of desserts with a bottle of pinot grigio from Alsace. Sounded perfect. “Do you want to know what the dishes are?” he asked. “I think we’d rather be surprised.” The starters were quickly served. Displayed minimalistically and symmetrically with orchid flourishes, it looked clean and unfussy. It was an unpretentious presentation that let the food speak for itself. Goi coun (fresh Vietnamese spring rolls with prawn and chicken), Po pear tod (fried Thai spring rolls with pork, glass noodles and mushrooms), Satay gai (marinated chicken on a spear) and Kung mapraow tod (coconut marinated tiger prawns) were paired with sauces that accented each starter nicely. The vegetables were fresh, the chicken woody and grilled and the coconut layer on the prawns delectable. “I could eat these for the rest of the night and be happy,” my friend told me. I couldn’t agree more. With such a great start to the meal, we were excited to get into our main dishes. The crisp pinot cleansed our palates, and

with duck. The flavour was expertly balanced, and the cinnamon pushed it over the edge into “God damn, that’s good” territory. With some curry-soaked rice, the duck was dark and tender and the lichee was a fresh surprise. I didn’t recall the last time I’d had this kind of Thai and been so pleased. We had to call timeout. As delicious as the food was, we needed to pace ourselves. We switched to a dry cabernet sauvignon from Argentina and simply looked around. The restaurant had a low, warm hum that made it feel simultaneously full and intimate. Everyone looked to be enjoying their

meals as much as we were. Ten minutes later, Mike came back with the coup de grâce: a Coconut parfait with fresh fruit, a Mango sorbet and a Crème brûlée. We ordered espressos and soaked in the final rich touches of an exquisite meal. If you’re craving something deliciously savoury, Restaurant Spicylicious has you covered. Take shelter from the snowy cold of the city and tuck yourself away in this gem in the heart of Copenhagen. Their name doesn’t lie.

T’S BEEN nine years since we last saw Peter Jackson tackle Tolkien’s fantastical world on the big screen, but now the New Zealand filmmaker returns with The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. The first of three film adaptations of the classic children’s book, its grandiloquence will please the fanatics, but leave those on the fence feeling disappointed and potentially nauseous. After a boisterous battle prologue, An Unexpected Journey starts similarly to The Fellowship of the Ring: in the comfort of the hobbit Shire with Frodo’s uncle, Bilbo Baggins (Ian Holm), sitting in his subterranean bachelor pad and eulogising about his past. From here, the film sinks into a flashback, and the young Bilbo (played now by Martin Freeman) has uninvited guests for dinner: Gandalf the Grey (Sir Ian McKellen) and 13 rowdy, mostly forgettable dwarves, with twee names like Oin and Gloin and elaborate Movember facial attire. Following some hobbit bashing and poor dining etiquette, the indignant Bilbo is convinced to help the dwarves in their pursuit to reclaim their former kingdom after it was taken over by the dragon Smaug, and they all set off on a quest across Middle-earth to reclaim their lost land. Along the way, they get into scrapes with man-eating trolls, conniving goblins, maniacal orcs and intellectual elves (headed once again by Cate Blanchett’s Galadriel). Early on in the film’s hefty 169-minute running time, Gandalf turns to young Bilbo and suggests: ‘Every good story needs embellishment’. The wiz-

Based on the first 100 pages of the novel, Jackson and his team of writers – now including Guillermo del Toro of Pan’s Labyrinth fame – struggle to hatch a consistently entertaining story to meet the excessive film length. Borrowing from the rest of Tolkien’s legendarium, there are superfluous subplots involving the annoying forest-dwelling wizard Radagast (Sylvester McCoy) and a tedious fight-out between two anthropomorphic rock creatures, lasting a whopping eight minutes. Even with a flabby storyline, some of the performances impress. Freeman

McKellen glows as Gandalf the Grey, but he’s about the only one

is simply fantastic as Bilbo. Famous as the hapless hero Tim from Ricky Gervais’s The Office, he brings much needed humour and heart to the film. Sir Ian McKellen is on fantastic form as the altruistic Gandalf, and Andy Serkis steals the show once again as the schizophrenic Gollum, who loses his ‘precious’ ring for the first time in a memorable cryptic showdown with Bilbo. In an attempt to make the special effects and props look as realistic as possible, the film is expensively shot at 48 frames per second, rather than the standard 24. It’s a jarring experience

– instead of the desired effect, such perfection and detail causes the film to look stagey, even imperfect. To it’s credit, the new technological advance works to great effect in the battle sequences, but is bothersome during the smaller, dramatic moments (seeing bigfooted hobbits waddle along New Zealand mountain sides is funny enough, without looking like it’s being played at double speed). It’s a great shame, particularly because the 3D – for a change – is pretty darn good. But with reports of audience members falling ill during screenings, the simulated feeling of The Hobbit may be too much for some to

stomach. Like the blighted Star Wars prequels, the reawakening of this box office-devouring monster-franchise was bound to be tough. Its financial success inevitable, The Hobbit is something of a Lord of the Rings: diet edition. There are some moments of storytelling finesse, yet they are dragged down by the Fellowship formula. In the film’s closing moments, Bilbo turns to the rest of his gruff amigos and says: “I do believe the worst is behind us.” With two more three-hour movies to follow, we can only hope that Jackson spares us the same torment.

In the end,, none of it serves this over-simplified story of good versus evil. AS

Dir: Olivier Megaton; US action, 2012, 95 mins; Liam Neeson, Maggie Grace, Famke Janssen, Leland Orser The first film was a guilty pleasure that worked only for Neeson’s fast-paced and high-octane action sequences, and in spite of a mind-numbingly dreadful performance from Maggie Grace. Now they’re both back, but this time with frenetic fight scenes that appear to be stolen straight out of Die Hard, and even more screen time for Grace. Skip it. LL

Dir: David Frankel; US romcom, 2012, 100 mins; Meryl Streep, Tommy Lee Jones, Steve Carell, Mimi Rogers While the trailer makes this film look like a syrupy sex romp, only a mournful tale of relationship turmoil lurks beneath the slapstick jokes and sarcastic jibes. Longtime couple Kay (Streep) and Arnold (Jones) embark on an intensive marriage counselling class in a last-ditch effort to save their marriage. The film raises faint hope and humour during the counselling session scenes, but the therapist Bernie Feld (Carell) unfortunately then sends the couple out on intimacy exercises, shudder-worthy attempts at vulgar comedy. Short on laughs and drama alike, Hope Springs reduces Kay and Arnold’s reconciliation efforts to 100 minutes of bickering, crying, and attempts at intimacy. LR

Dir: Rodney Ascher; US doc, 2012, 102 mins Documentary film-maker Rodney Ascher delves into one of the most-beloved horror films of all-time, namely Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining and, with the help of five hard-core Shining fans, explores some of the many symbolic interpretations surrounding the film. Most of it is far-fetched and absurd, but all of it entertaining! LL

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 (11) Dir: Bill Condon; US fantasy, 2012, 119 mins; Kristin Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner, Dakota Fanning, Ashley Greene, Nikki Reed, Michael Sheen The enormously lucrative franchise that is The Twilight Saga finally comes to an end. And thank god for that. As we’ve come to expect from the last four films, Part 2’s soap-operaesque script, lacklustre direction and mind-numbing melodrama are the film’s biggest problems. But perhaps the scariest part of all comes with the introduction of some new characters, which leaves the door open for potential spin-offs. Now there’s a scary thought. LR

Also Playing Killing Them Softly (15) Dir: Andrew Dominik; US crime/drama, 2012, 97 mins; Brad Pitt, James Gandolfini, Scoot McNairy, Ray Liotta There’s a familiarity to almost every facet of Killing Them Softly, and while there’s some welcome nostalgia to be enjoyed from this medley of greatest gangster hits, it’s all so uncomfortably derivative. The intention to provide the film with some originality and depth shows, but the plot is minimal – and alas, it never seems to gel in any meaningful way. MW

Argo (15) Dir: Ben Affleck; US thriller, 2012, 120 mins; Ben Affleck, John Goodman, Bryan Cranston, Alan Arkin, Clea Duvall, Tate Donovan, Victor Garber While Affleck has gone to some lengths to deliver a restrained and tasteful film, the script itself is determined to show off, with the climax taking every opportunity to ratchet up the drama quite shamelessly. It might make for highly entertaining cinema, but falls short in convincing us of the narrative’s authenticity. For a film about disguise, this film masquerades as one belonging to the dangerous fringes of political filmmaking, but reveals itself to be quite mainstream and, like Affleck himself, a little more ordinary that it really should be. IT’S OFFICIAL. Swedish TV is pants. With Malmø hosting the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest, its national channels have been drastically cutting back to help fund it, and we might have to put up with this dearth until 2014. They haven’t had anything decent to watch in Pavlopetri for … 3,000 years. The ancient Greek city has the dubious honour of being the world’s oldest submerged archaeological town site and is now the subject of the BBC doc City Beneath the Waves: Pavlopetri. It would be tough selling that one to kids, but no doubt some of the sharks in Consuming Kids (DR2, Mon 23:10) would be able to convince Junior he needs to persuade his parents to take him scuba diving off the Peloponnese. Ameri-

can kids are the most powerful consumer demographic in the world, and this doc lifts the lid on the buttons the moneymen push to make them want more and more candy. But it’s not just kids. Just ask the subjects of Mark Zuckerberg: Inside Facebook (DR2, Sat 20:01) and Steve Jobs: Billion Dollar Hippie (DR2, Sat 20:45), two geeks who have changed our world forever. Talking of which, the film nerds among you might want to record Cameraman - The Life and Work of Jack Cardiff (DRK, Tue 10:15), a doc about the legendary cinematographer who shot most of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger’s classic movies, providing you can shake off your student union hangover to get up that early.
