IF THE SLIPPER fits, pantomime could become an annual tradition, I wrote last year in anticipation of the Copenhagen Theatre Circle’s production of Cinderella, and to be honest, I wasn’t anticipating much when I went to review it. The only other panto I’d ever seen was when I was eight in Bexhill-on-sea, a town on England’s southern coast where the businessman of the year is always an undertaker. It’s where old people − and as it turned out, pantos − come to die. “He’s behind you, just like your career … and Jimmy Saville was last week,” we should have shouted, but even then I knew it was, and I reluctantly use this word, naff – a word normally followed by ‘off’ and used as a swear-word substitute in British soap operas since the late 1980s. Given their forgettable contribution to panto, it kind of fits. So I was pleasantly surprised when it kicked off and I realised I wasn’t going to have to lie in my review, or at least not mention all the bad bits. Sure the singing wasn’t

universally great, but the script and performances were great, and the size of the venue (only 100 seats a night) made it such an intimate performance. Too often, media (and we’re as guilty as the next) condescendingly intimates that the show is good despite it being am-dram. But who would you honestly want to see: a talented amateur actor or a former football player and his glamour model wife? You can take your pick between Elke de Roos (a delightful young girl who brought the house down last year ) or Mark van Bommel. Actually, scrap that, he would make a great villain, and he always comes from behind. And once again, for this year’s Aladdin and his Wonderful Lamp (see G2 for details), the director Barry McKenna has personally written the script. Just like a pub quiz or minced pies, you can’t beat doing it yourself. Topical, local, Anglo, you know it’s going to work on a multitude of levels. It sounds win-win, but that’s a precarious assumption because there’s one vital ingredient still needed to ensure the CTC return next year, and further beyond: you! It won’t be a success unless you make an effort to see it – it’s a small amount to pay to prove yourself wrong: you do like pantos. All together now: “Oh yes you do!”

Following its roaring success with Cinderella last Christmas, the Copenhagen Theatre Circle are excited to present Aladdin and his Wonderful Lamp. Written and directed by Reumert Award winner Barry McKenna, this is one show that will delight and win over audiences of all ages. Pantomimes aren’t just for kids after all. And while it doesn’t include flying carpets or monkeys sitting on shoulders, it does reference everything from Starbucks and Easyjet to the Danish Royal Family. The story begins in a Chinese town where we meet the poor boy Aladdin. He is then befriended by the magician Abanazar, who passes himself off as the brother of Aladdin’s late father. Abanazar convinces Aladdin and his mother of his goodwill by telling them

Glassalen in Tivoli, Vesterbrogade 3, Cph V; ends Jan 12, performances Mon-Sat 19:30, Sat 15:00; tickets 100-370kr, www.teaterbilleter.dk; www. londontoast.dk This year, to celebrate 30 years of the CCC, the master of suspense is being reinvented by the mistress of suspenders. “I write the show about issues that are relevant to the public,” writer, director and leading lady Vivienne McKee told InOut. “And Hitchcock is as influential today as he was when he was alive. Just look at The Killing and Borgen.” The plot sees ‘Vivienne’ decide she’s had enough of the CCC and decide to adapt a longlost Hitchcock script. Her actors vow to dispense of her quickly. LL

his plan to establish Aladdin as a wealthy merchant. Abanazar’s real motive, however, is to have Aladdin retrieve a wonderful oil lamp from a magical cave for him. After realising he’s been doublecrossed, Aladdin finds himself trapped in the cave, but is thankfully able to call upon a genie (from a ring he is wearing) to help him. The lamp also has a genie, and upon returning home, Aladdin uses him to help his dreams become a reality. He marries Princess Yueliang, the daughter of the Dragon Empress of China, and moves into a magnificent palace. However, Abanazar hasn’t forgotten about the lamp and is determined to have it at all costs. And so ensues the action, romance and adventure. McKenna says this wildy entertaining genre “is a good old-fashioned form of entertainment that owes a lot to melodrama”. For those not in the know about pantomime, it grew out of the Italian commedia dell’arte and quickly became a popular form of theatre in Britain in the 17th century. Since then it has evolved to adopt traditions from the British music hall and today it is always based on a familiar children’s fairytale such as Cinderella. Expect an impressive towering set, colourful projections, and a stage alive with a myriad of imaginatively costumed creatures and larger-than-life creepy-crawlies. PS

example, the audience is invited to boo, while they should cheer when the hero or heroine appear. It’s this running dialogue between cast and audience that makes pantomime a wonderfully interactive piece of theatre. McKenna says at the heart of it, Aladdin and his Wonderful Lamp is a feel-good show that offers the whole family a great night out. “A show like Aladdin hopefully has a decent moral to it and shows that if you work hard enough, you can achieve your heart’s desires and prove that love really does conquer all.” Its appeal, says McKenna, is universal: “It’s aimed at ages five to 90, but please come if you’re over 100, or a wellbehaved four-year-old!” On Saturday and Sunday (12-13 January), there will also be an opportunity to get up and close with the actors and actresses after the show. Grab a picture with your favourite character or ask the villain to do his best evil laugh one more time. For most Brits, the Christmas season isn’t complete without a trip to the panto, but that’s not to say other nationalities won’t be charmed by this form of theatre. So come and inject a little magic into your holiday season and experience what the panto is all about!

Following in the footsteps of the critically-acclaimed 2009 Come Together production at Gasværket, with creators Peter and Jens Helleman once again teaming up with director Nikolaj Cederholm, expect avant-garde costumes and well-known rock tunes transformed into wonderfully weird symphonies unlike anything heard before. Hey Jude will include 30 reinvented Beatles classics, including ‘Let it Be’, ‘She Loves You’, ‘Blackbird’, ‘Lady Madonna’ and of course, ‘Hey Jude’. Onstage will be The Storm lead singer and X Factor judge Pernille Rosendahl, who will be making her concert theatre debut. LL

Georges Bizet’s classic opera − full of steamy Spanish passion, eroticism, raucous stage scenes and familiar songs that will have you swaying on your haunches − will be the first performance of 2013 at the Copenhagen Opera House and it promises to kick off the new year in spectacular fashion. Written by French composer Bizet with a libretto by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy, Carmen was first performed in Paris in 1875. It’s based on a novel by the same title and tells the story of the downfall of Don José, a naïve soldier who is seduced by the worldly-wise gypsy

Carmen. José sacrifices everything in a bid to win Carmen’s heart, abandoning his childhood sweetheart and his military career. But when Carmen chooses the glamorous toreador Escamillo instead, José kills her in a jealous rage. With its bawdy working class scenes and themes of lawlessness and immorality, Carmen at first proved controversial, yet not particularly successful. Sadly it was only after Bizet’s death that it began to gain critical acclaim. Today it has become one of the most recognised and well-loved operas performed on stages throughout the world. This particular production by Scottish director David McVicar was originally created for the Glyndebourne Festival where it received rave reviews. It premiered at the Royal Danish Theatre three years ago and now it’s back, this time with Carmen sung by Anna Caterina Antonacci, the celebrated French soprano who has already proved herself in the role at the Royal Opera House in London and at the Opera Comique. Tenor Andrew Richards, who appeared as Don José at La Scala in Milan, takes the role of her besotted pursuer. There’s plenty of Danish talent on show too. Musicians and singers from the Royal Danish Orchestra, the Royal Danish Opera Chorus, the Danish Boys’ Choir and the Danish

Girls’ Choir will be conducted by Vello Pahn and Alexander Prior, while the Tivoli Pantomime Theatre is providing backup dancers, who will be choreographed by Andrew George. The gritty set design – think factory floors and dingy bar scenes – is the work of Michael Vale, and Paule Constable is in charge of lighting, while the magnificent costumes, including Carmen’s cleavage-spilling corsets and Escamillo’s outrageous gold-encrusted bull-fighting get-up, are designed by Sue Blane. The 225-minute performance is sung in French with Danish supertitles, but even the most casual of opera-goers will recognise Bizet’s catchy rhythms and melodic songs. The toreador’s song, ‘Votre toast’ from Act Two, is one of the most popular and best-known of all operatic arias, while Carmen’s ‘Habanera’, based on the idiomatic song ‘El Arreglito’ by Spanish-American composer Sebastian Iradier, is also one of those instantly recognisable tunes that once heard lodges itself in your memory forever. It is the accessibility of this music, the easy to follow plot and the bustling, rowdy group scenes that give Carmen its universal appeal. Given how popular it was the first time around, you’re well advised to book your seats now.

Once again the summer gods were kind for Copenhagen Celtic’s annual summer tournament, which this year was contested by ten teams representing countries (the home nations and Scandinavia mainly) or invited companies, including Ad People, Saxo Bank and the Copenhagen Post. The teams play a gruelling 80 minutes just to qualify for the semi-finals, and then after the final hang out to cool down with a few beers, a smashing barbecue, a penalty competition and some entertainment for the kids.

Another company participating was Saxo Bank, who had a rollercoaster of a day that started with a big dipper when they became the only team to lose to the Copenhagen Post! t’s easy to get despondent with all of the bad news filtering out of Palestine. After another round of serious fighting and with the peace process in tatters, it’s tempting to think that no-one’s trying to bridge the gap. Thankfully this isn’t the case, and the Middle East Peace Orchestra is living proof of people in the region trying to make a difference. Made up of both Jewish and Arab musicians, the orchestra blends the different influences, becoming a living example of what

people can accomplish if they’d only work together. It’s not just the political ramifications of the orchestra that make them worthwhile. Comprised of some of the Middle East’s most accomplished classical musicians, the music they create is both traditional and unique: a balance between the past and the future. Traditional klezmer melodies flow with Arabian motifs, layered over Europeaninspired structures to create a sound that is both full and rich. The orchestra is the brainchild of Henrik Chaim Goldschmidt who founded it in 2003. Inviting musicians from Palestine, Israel, Jordan, Iraq, Egypt, Lebanon and Scandinavia, Goldschmidt set out with the intention

of creating dialogue through music. Almost an instant success, the orchestra began touring in January 2004, receiving positive press both in Denmark and abroad. The Swedish film company CINergy Film has made a featurelength documentary about the project; audiences have been impressed with the group’s passion for their music as well as the collaboration it represents. Goldschmidt is not simply a political activist. An accomplished oboist, he has played with the Royal Danish Orchestra as well as the Danish Wind Octet, which won the Danish Chamber Music competition’s first prize in 1991 and a Grammy Award for the best classical release of 1993. His 1996 recording, Phantasy – Music for Oboe, was

voted number one on DR’s classical hit list, retaining the spot for eight successive weeks. The other musicians are equally as accomplished – selected by Goldschmidt as much for their skills with their instruments as their nationality. With a range of percussion instruments, strings and brass, the musicians shine when performing their solos, but really come into their own when they play together. The older, traditional instruments are the standouts. Unique and unusual, the sound these instruments create blends wonderfully with the more modern instruments, both accentuating and contrasting with the accepted classical norms. The orchestra plays a varied and in-

teresting set, moving through a range of different tempos. Soft introductions are followed by clamorous changes, rising and wavering through different themes in almost every song. As well as playing beautifully, the musicians offer us some much needed post-Christmas cheer. With most of us struggling with our New Year’s resolutions and returning to work, it’s nice to know there are people out there working on things that really matter. With tickets starting from as little as 73kr, this is a concert that will make you feel good in more ways than one.

With few live shows on this weekend, most musicians are back in the studio during this period gearing themselves up for 2013, which gives lesser-known acts such as Apaloo the chance to attract curious spectators.

Rust, Guldbergsgade 8, Cph N; 20:00; 40kr While the reality that 2013 has arrived is still sinking in for many of the bigger venues in town, Rust has jumped straight on it with a handful of concerts and club nights running throughout January. Tonight features the EP release party of the Danish R&B lyricist Holsaae, who made his debut on the Nørrebro scene with his 2011 single ‘Gennemsnitsdansker’ ( ‘Average Dane’). It’s pretty difficult to get to the meat of what he’s singing about if your Danish is a bit rusty, but this is a golden spot for new students who’ve arrived in town, giving you a fast-track insight into what Nørrebro’s nightlife offers.

Store Vega; 20:00; 325kr With song titles such as ‘Panty Dropper’ and ‘I Invented Sex’, lyrics which open up with ‘to all the beautiful ladies out there’, and a vocal style that compares with Usher, one might consider Trey the next R Kelly. As it turns out, it’s not supposed to be ironic or funny even at the most base level – which is embarrassing, frankly. You’d hear this kind of pop on languid radio stations, but would never expect that artists like Trey are actually allowed to perform live, given that only a minute percentage of their material is their own – the majority of it is produced with high spec equipment. Amazingly, the show will probably still sell out.

here’s an end to everything wonderful – there’s a crack in everything beautiful” their song ‘Get Ready to Leave’ reminds us and it’s a sentiment worthy of tonight, as it’s clear to see that The Sandmen are respected and adored. The Danish rock group, who since forming in 1985 have released nine albums in between break-ups and changing members, last surfaced to pull the plug on a tour in 2009 – with no promise of a return – only to pop up three years later at a sold-out Vega. It’s the feelings for this band that set the atmosphere. The Sandmen are happy to be back to share their songs with their old loyal fans from the early days. Some in the audience have even brought their kids to pass

Vegenfeldt has lost none of his verve: like a restless boxer before a fight

on the rite of passage. It’s like the band and audience are reuniting in a different time and age. The Sandmen are still, despite years of absence, right at the core of what moves people. Frontman Allan Vegenfeldt is on good form tonight. Smiling and gesticulating, he steps back and forth like a restless boxer before a fight. His voice still fulfils the expectations, still edging desperation, just how we have come to like it, though for me, the volume of the vocals are en tand for lavt – a little on the low side for most of the set. Towards the end he has a magical

moment going into Jim Morrison territory in ‘Am I Grooving You’ where I wish he would have stayed a while longer. Stefan Moulvad, who took over from the legendary now deceased Sam Mitchell in 2003, doesn’t try to replicate the heavy rock riffs and Hendrix blues guitar his predecessor was famed for. It means the old songs lose some of their raw edge. The later songs suit his style far better I reckon, like ‘White Trash Red Front’, which is great live. Bassist Jens Hein (from Mellemblond) together with drummer Michael Illo Rasmussen

supply a rock-solid base. Rasmussen is still tight and as cool as ice like someone who has done it all a thousand times before. Tonight he seems right on top of things, sitting comfortably in his seat smiling, checking out the faces in the audience. And the highly intense keyboardist Palle Hjort (from The Savage Rose) adds a new spark to the sound on the keyboards. Among the highlights are ‘How Come’, a great song that reminds me of an early Beatles track (think ‘A Hard Days Night’) metamorphosing into full-blown Led Zeppelin and a cool version of Prime Mover (a Leather Nun cover) with lots of pedal and heavy guitar. The concert has a good energy level throughout, though a little less edgy than in their early days. By all means a good gig – though personally I was not totally blown away. Street smart FOR THE TRUE car lover, there is nothing more exciting than sitting behind the wheel of a sports car. The streets are full of chunky SUVs and plain sedans, but wait until you see how many heads turn to see your flashy red two-door bullet of a car and you will never settle for anything else. Toyota’s GT86 Toyota Denmark, Dynamovej 10, Herlev; 539,997kr Toyota’s new sports car, the GT86, is trying to energise a brand that over the past decade has been defined by the car everybody loves to hate, the Prius - ultimately a standard of comparison for any car that lacks personality. And while it might be true that most of Toyota’s cars aren’t exactly a sight for sore eyes, the brand is still, first and foremost, assuredly a guarantee of quality. You might remember the Celica, its 2+2 seater coupé withdrawn from the market a few years back. Or the legendary drift king EF86, which is surely every videogame player’s first choice for virtual drift competitions. And probably most hard to forget was the 1960s beauty, the GT2000: a true rarity that is nowadays a collector’s item. The new GT86 (2.0 D-4S Boxer 200 HP) pays homage to all of these, bringing the ‘wow!’ factor back to Toyota with aplomb. And trust me – not only did their car spark such exclamations out of my mouth while I took a spin at the wheel, but I could almost hear them from all the other motorists I passed above the roaring music of the high-revving engine.

But don’t get me wrong, there’s more to this car than looks. While it might not be a true sports cars in terms of performance, if you need a car for daily use that is full of personality and can get you anywhere fast and in style, this is the car to do it, stress-free. Volkswagen Scirocco VW Cars, Park Allé 355, Brøndby; 376,393kr The Scirocco (1.4 TSI 160 HP) might be more attractive than the VW Golf lying underneath its flashy exterior, but the differences at the wheel are sure hard to find. It just goes to show that a sporty look does not a sports cars make. Saying that, the position at the wheel has been significantly lowered and its cornering abilities outclass the Golf. And it is probably the best compromise between a hot-hatch and compact car that money can buy. Indeed, given that this is its last production cycle, you can rest assured most of its initial bugs and problems have been fixed as well, so you are in for a great buy!

PROPS IS THE PLACE to go if you really need to wind down. The atmosphere is relaxed and so is the service. Take the barman: among his priorities is leaving the bar to make phone calls fairly often. Granted, this would be annoying in most places, but at Props it is surprisingly enough accepted, if not appreciated. It fits in with the laid-back atmosphere of the place that you can’t really be in a hurry. And besides, the place is nice and warm, the music is alright – so what’s the rush? When the bartender finally decides to return, you just make sure you order two pints. And when he’s around, the bartender is fairly knowledgeable and helpful about their beer selection. Music-wise they play it safe with a standard indie rock playlist, but it suits the place and you appreciate the fact that you don’t have to shout to have a conversation. Props is not what you would call overcrowded, but it is fairly busy both on week days and during the weekend. The crowd is typical of Nørrebro: hipster but not the ‘look and be looked’ at kind of hipster, more of the “I have no worries in the world and I have time to go out and stay out any time of the week.” It’s definitely one of those places where you will stand out if you have spent too much time dressing up. Admittedly, the selection of beer that Props offers means that I haven’t

Aside from their regular lagers, they also offer Lagunitas, an American microbrewery that has a wide range of great beers and oftentimes, if not always, this is enough to stay put for a long time. The ale Lagunitas ‘Censored’ comes especially recommended. The prices are reasonable – yet another reason why you might decide to hang around for that extra pint you didn’t initially plan to. It’s just 25 kroner for an ‘Ole’, their house lager, and 40kr for their Lagunitas.

During the day it is more of a coffee place (hence the name), and it is somewhat easier to find a place to sit. In the summer, Props also has outside seating. So relax, have a pint and embrace one of Props’s poster mottos: “Sund fornuft er yderst skadelig for dig og dine omgivelser.” Which translates into English as “Good sense is extremely harmful to you and your surroundings. THE CHRISTMAS season is infamous for being a season of excess, especially when it comes to food. But when the holidays are gone and a new year is starting to set in, there is a need for new beginnings. So why not start in the kitchen? I was recently asked by a friend back home about what interesting local cuisine I have tasted in Denmark. And while I made an effort to put it into words for her, I realised the reason why this was so difficult for me was that there is nothing truly original about Danish cuisine. Everything that I have tried here so far has been a combination of things I have already tried before somewhere else. The typical Dan-

ish dishes I have tried have been mediocre, as far as I am concerned. Nevertheless, Danish meals are fulfilling and unafraid to add a few extra calories if the taste can be improved. These are qualities I like in food. But having to pick between rye bread and boiled potatoes all the time can prove to be a bit too narrow a choice after a while, and my eastern European-trained palate can begin to feel the need for something more daring. Polenta, for example, is a side dish that can easily replace a portion of boiled potatoes if the choice of food is the right one. And it can also form the core of some delicious recipes as well.

Tucked away behind a hard-to-find door on the first floor to the right of a typical Copenhagen apartment, the restaurant is based around the concept of the dinner party with guests stepping into what appears to be a private apartment and then being utterly spoilt by their hosts. The monthly set menu costs 1,250kr and has a whopping ten courses, and you can tell them in advance of any food quirks you might have and they will personalise the menu for you. Terrific food, friendly and attentive service and a unique setting. CS

So much more than another stock standard Copenhagen sushi place, it offers a delicious range of snacks, salads, small dishes, sushi, meats from the grill, Yakitori (skewered meats), tempura, sashimi, and, of course, a range of sweets. Its Scallop Katafi is the best in the city, while the Yakitori left us speechless – it was divine. Reasonably priced, impeccably chic and unbelievably tasty, this is the place to go if you want to be a hero amongst the trendsetters. ALL YOU NEED is a nice warm oven (preheated to around 180C before you start) and a large saucepan. Place your saucepan on a stove at a medium temperature and add oil. Add the onions and the garlic and make sure to stir every once in a while. After about five minutes they should start turning a golden brown colour, which signals they are ready. Pour the milk and the broth over this mixture and let it all simmer.

For dessert, order the banana cake with salted coconut ice cream, then stagger home, full of good food and wine. It’s stylish without being pretentious, fast enough that you don’t go crazy waiting for food, and loud enough that you can make a racket without anyone raising an eyebrow. There were two highlights: the veal, pumpkin, mushrooms and potatoes with amazing truffle sauce (a “best ever veal experience”) and the chocolate cake (“Oh My God”), which was possibly the best chocolate cake ever! Then comes the trickier part. The cornmeal can get quite lumpy during the mixing process if not done properly and nobody wants to have a big tasteless lump on their plate. So this part requires the most attention, as you add the cornmeal in a slow steady stream while you are whisking continuously until the cornmeal thickens so that there is no use anymore for a whisk. You are not done, however. Lower the heat a little bit and continue to stir for some 15 minutes more until the cornmeal really thickens. Just before finishing up, add the parmesan, frozen corn and salt and pepper while stirring. The polenta is right to serve with plenty of melted butter while it is still soft and creamy. If you might need to reheat the polenta later on, make sure you cut it into thick slices and grill them.

With such a wide choice, it’s a great place to go as a group who can’t agree on a choice of cuisine. Stop by this takeaway joint and see for yourself. The dish of the day is always a hit, or you can opt for salad or dessert. Drop by at 17:00 on Fridays for the traditional Irish music sessions which are rapidly gaining in popularity. It serves food from 10am to 10pm, and diners can find peace from the music and sport on a table overlooking the walking street, or on the first floor balcony overlooking Amagertorv. A Jacques of all Gallic charms displayed and a master of the lot IT’S QUAINT, idyllic, bijou and ohso-definitely French. Gallic restaurants are ten-a-penny in Østerbro. Some are gourmet and chic, others traditional and comfortable, but rarely are they both – I had begun to think it was an impossible combination. Or so I thought as I was proven wrong when on an icy cold evening I stepped into the warm and intimate constraints of Restaurant Le Saint Jacques. The restaurant was started in 1995 by none other than Daniel Letz, whose name is synonymous with French cuisine in Denmark. One cannot talk about Le Saint Jacques without referring a little bit to Letz’s legacy. Daniel Letz, a French chef, started at the prestigious Kong Hans restaurant in Copenhagen in 1980. As one of the first chefs to receive Michelin star recognition for a restaurant, Letz is a key member of the school of culinary artists who started a food revolution in Denmark in the ‘80s. Their efforts and experiments have resulted in a new phenomenon that we know as Nordic-French cuisine and which is served in almost every gourmet and Michelin-starred restaurant in this country. But at Le Saint Jacques, Letz goes back to basics. His restaurant, which was designed to look like a church, does not scream of culinary extravagance. Instead, one is met with the welcoming aroma of a traditional French kitchen and a simple white interior, complete with a statue of Jesus. On offer at the restaurant is a range of fine French dishes accompanied by a selections of carefully chosen wines. For starters, their famous smoked salmon is highly recommended. The salmon is smoked to perfection for about 30 hours, ensuring it retains just the right amount of freshness. Accompanying this was a glass of Sancerre 2010. Following this was the pipping hot house special, Scallops Saint Jacques, gratinated with tiger prawns and mussels. This is a special as the scallop is also the emblem of the restaurant. For the main course, if you are not particularly taken with the choices on the menu, there is always a special of the day. On our evening at Le Saint Jacques we had the popular French dish, Confit de canard, which was served with root vegetables and a creamy sauce. To wash down this well-

prepared and substantially portioned dish was a glass of the full-bodied Gigondas 2008 from the Rhone region in France. Finally the sweet ending to this soirée consisted of a serving of French apple pie with crème anglaise and meringue. When asked about his philosophy of food, Letz explains that a good plate of food is one which is prepared well and accompanied by the right kind of drink. The menu is simple, the wine list appropriate and the waiting staff helpful and friendly. The guests are

neither overloaded with the choices of wine and dishes on the menu, nor are they promised culinary extravagances and artistic experiments with the food. What is definitely on offer is charm. The simple furnishings, the authentic food and French chatter from the kitchen almost transports one to a cosy corner of Paris. In the summer, the square of Sankt Jakobs Plads opens out into an extension of the restaurant with seating for the guests. Overall one could say that the food at Le Saint Jacques lacked the usual

oompf that one can see on offer in most gourmet restaurants in Copenhagen. But that might not necessarily be a bad thing. As Daniel Letz puts it, a plate of food needs to be “tasteful and satisfying”, and that is what Le Saint Jacques is all about. This restaurant, situated in the plush quarters of Østerbro, aims to serve a good plate of food minus any surprises, pleasant or unpleasant.

HE FILM begins in the grime and poverty of a bayou island community nicknamed ‘the Bathtub’. As the plot unravels, life and death in this tiny fishing town are slowly revealed to the viewer through sparse dialogue and arresting visuals. The reality of both these extremes, however, is certainly far more immediate to the characters than the audience. An early sequence in the film is particularly telling, in which the sixyear-old protagonist Hushpuppy (in a truly spellbinding turn by newcomer Wallis) and her father Wink (Henry) engage in an alcohol-fuelled celebration featuring fireworks and resulting in several memorable images. Wink is a hard man, with a lean muscular physique and skin weathered by a life on the breadline. He has a shortfused temper, perhaps fed by his status as a single parent and rapidly failing health. A difficult character to like, Wink is often angry, sometimes brutal and even borderline cruel, and he lashes out at his daughter repeatedly – but we suspect that he’s preparing her for the even tougher environment awaiting her after he’s gone. Other residents of the Bathtub behave more like roughly-sketched, mumbling cartoons; presented as a single unit rather than individuals, they behave as if they are sharing a single brain. Most are allowed to do little more than holler in the background and wave their arms on the periphery of the screen. One suspects that this is due to the supporting cast being

largely untrained, but nevertheless, they populate the film with authentic faces, both human and animal, creating a convincing, incredibly textural environment. The Bathtub becomes a strange and alluring dreamscape, but every location and prop feels utterly real, as if the crew had found them just so prior to shooting. Hushpuppy and other impoverished children are educated by Miss Bathsheba (Montana), the only character allowed to construct entire sentences unpunctuated by alcoholic wails or cussing. One morning in the ramshackle school, she warns the

children of an impending change that will befall the earth: the melting of the ice-caps will release long-frozen monsters who once roamed the earth and soon will again. One such beast is the Auroch, a giant, horned, boarlike creatures which leaves death and destruction in its wake. After a storm decimates the Bathtub, Hushpuppy must navigate an increasingly tough environment. To survive, she ultimately must earn her place at the top of the food chain. Based on the play Juicy and Delicious by Lucy Alibar (who is credited as a co-writer of the film along with di-

rector Zeitlin), this film adaptation is essentially a charming children’s coming-of-age story – a moralistic fairy tale told through magical realism and dressed up with music video visuals that recalls the energetic camera of City of God and the like. In spirit, however, the film most resembles the independent cinema of the early 1970s, such as Nicolas Roeg’s brilliant Walkabout, in which a white teenage girl flees her demented father and becomes stranded in the Aboriginal outback, forced to fend for her younger brother. In the Bathtub, Hushpuppy struggles to remain resolutely by her father’s side and

fight for what little they have, but in both films, these young females are fundamentally alone, elevated beyond gender and race. Hushpuppy’s dedication to her father is as heartbreakingly beautiful as young Wallis’s perfectly cast face, but the film’s occasional dabbling in sentimentality, along with an overbearing score and an over-reliance on voiceovers (conversation with Hushpuppy’s absent mother is used as a device for externalising thoughts) often feel contrived, preventing the film from achieving the transcendence it aims for.

AVING DISAPPOINTED us with his falsetto in the jukebox musical Rock of Ages, Tom Cruise returns with the action-thriller Jack Reacher, the first film based on Lee Child’s bestselling crime fiction series, and unlikely to be the last. Cruise is the eponymous anYou should know by now, Tom – stalking Katie won’t get you anywhere ti-hero: an enigmatic ex-military

cop using his brain, brawn and ego to bring criminals to justice. While he may not have the blonde locks, towering height, or formidable muscle mass of Child’s literary creation, the pintsized patron saint of Scientology is strong here, adopting the same wit, surly demeanour and cocksure charisma that has made him such a bankable movie star. After a six-shot rampage leaves five innocent bystanders dead, the hospitalised lead suspect begs the police to bring in the only man who can solve the case: Jack Reacher. Soon enough, the nomadic Reacher arrives. Together with defence lawyer Helen Rodin (Pike), a little digging turns this allegedly open-and-shut case

into a Pandora’s box of secrets and corruption. Adapted and directed by Christopher McQuarrie – best known as the Oscar winning writer of The Usual Suspects – the embellished script allows space for the supporting cast to shine. Pike, who has great chemistry with Cruise from the outset, is brilliant as the sexy-smart sidekick. Elsewhere, Jenkins and David Oyelowo put in reliably good performances as the discerning detectives in the wings. But it’s the oldies who really steal the show, with Robert Duvall as a brusque gun ranch proprietor, and German filmmaker Herzog as the cartoonish villain, a glass-eyed Siberian war-prisoner called ‘The Zec’.

Shot in a gritty, old-fashioned style, such a rough finish turns Reacher from a quintessential action man into a 21st century Dirty Harry, willing to break the law to catch the bad guys. His arrogance does start to annoy, but the bareknuckle brawls, throwaway one-liners and a rousing car chase sequence keep us enthralled. A scattering of good moments, however, can’t stop Jack Reacher from overstaying its 130-minute running time. Built on action-thriller clichés, the film takes itself far too seriously to be mindless entertainment – reaching for fifth gear, but struggling to get out of Cruise control. LUKE RICHARDSON

As officer Brian Taylor (Gyllenhaal) and partner Zavala (Pena) patrol the streets, Ayer attempts to weave mocking brotherly banter between ethical certitudes and racial politics. In the end,, none of it serves this over-simplified story of good versus evil. AS

The Possession (15) Dir: Ole Bornedal; US horror, 2012, 92 mins; Natasha Calis, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Kyra Sedgwick The only twist in an otherwise by-the-book exorcism plot is that instead of a Christian demon, this is a Jewish one. This forgettable flick does a decent job at maintaining a feeling of dread throughout, but that’s mostly because the audience can’t wait for it to be over. ED

Now they’re both back, but this time with frenetic fight scenes that appear to be stolen straight out of Die Hard, and even more screen time for Grace. Skip it. LL

Dir: David Frankel; US romcom, 2012, 100 mins; Meryl Streep, Tommy Lee Jones, Steve Carell, Mimi Rogers While the trailer makes this film look like a syrupy sex romp, only a mournful tale of relationship turmoil lurks beneath the slapstick jokes and sarcastic jibes of Hope Springs. Longtime couple Kay (Streep) and Arnold (Jones) embark on an intensive marriage counselling class in a last-ditch effort to save their marriage. The film raises faint hope and humour during the counselling session scenes, but the therapist (Carell) unfortunately then sends the couple out on intimacy exercises, shudder-worthy attempts at vulgar comedy. Short on laughs and drama alike, Hope Springs reduces Kay and Arnold’s reconciliation efforts to 100 minutes of bickering, crying, and attempts at intimacy. LR

Dir: Peter Jackson; US/New Zealand Adventure/Fantasy, 2012, 169 mins; Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, Richard Armitage, Hugo Weaving The grandiloquence of the film will please the fanatics, but leave those on the fence potentially nauseous. Although some of the performances impress, the storyline is flabby, and the writers struggle to hatch a consistently entertaining story to meet the film’s excessive length. LR

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 (11) Dir: Bill Condon; US fantasy, 2012, 119 mins; Kristin Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner, Dakota Fanning, Ashley Greene, Nikki Reed, Michael Sheen The enormously lucrative franchise that is The Twilight Saga finally comes to an end. And thank god for that. As we’ve come to expect from the last four films, Part 2’s soap-operaesque script, lacklustre direction and mind-numbing melodrama are the film’s biggest problems. But perhaps the scariest part of all comes with the introduction of some new characters, which leaves the door open for potential spin-offs. Now there’s a scary thought. LR

Also Playing Life of Pi (11) Dir: Ang Lee; US Adventure/ drama, 2012, 130 mins; Suraj Sharma, Irrfan Khan, Gerard Depardieu, Rafe Spall, Tabu This beautiful adventure movie is an absolute must-see, even if the plot stinks. It’s a bottomless box of visual delights: colours have never been so vivid. But although writer David Magee does his best to cloak a very corny plot, elements of the baggy original novel still creep in. Despite the narrative compromise, the film is a much-needed bit of heart-warming magic during the frosty season. LR

Argo (15) Dir: Ben Affleck; US thriller, 2012, 120 mins; Ben Affleck, John Goodman, Bryan Cranston, Alan Arkin, Clea Duvall, Tate Donovan, Victor Garber While Affleck has gone to some lengths to deliver a restrained and tasteful film, the script itself is determined to show off, with the climax taking every opportunity to ratchet up the drama quite shamelessly. It might make for highly entertaining cinema, but falls short in convincing us of the narrative’s authenticity. For a film about disguise, this film masquerades as one belonging to the dangerous fringes of political filmmaking, but reveals itself to be quite mainstream and, like Affleck himself, a little more ordinary than it really should be. MANY QUESTION whether there would have been a Cartoon Crisis had the drawings been offensive depictions of Christ or Buddha (or maybe both, at it), but that would be forgetting the offence caused by The Life of Brian in 1979 when Monty Python gave JyllandsPosten a run for their money in the provocateur stakes. Holy Flying Circus lovingly recreates a TV debate about the film – with such strong subject matter, it’s hard to see how it could go wrong. But it does, according to the Guardian. “It meanders, wanders off at self-referential tangents, to the left and right, forwards in time, to Mexico, or up its own arse,” it observed. “Sometimes it’s too clever. I just wanted it to get on with the story.”

This would be my only criticism of the second series of Game of Thrones, which once again is brilliant, with episode nine a standout. While season one was an odyssey, little happens in two. One of the main characters spends five episodes on a boat, another seven episodes as a house guest, and another the entire series on a reconnaissance mission. On a tighter schedule is 6 Days to Air: The Making of South Park (TV2 Zulu, Wed 23:35), which follows the production of an episode, from conception to release. It’s a formula that seems to work. The same could be said of the 12 Angry Men format followed by The Jury (SV1, Wed 22:00 & Thu 22:50), and the Call My Bluff format of Would I Lie to you? (BBC Ent, Wed 22:00).
