BEN HAMILTON
I’VE JUST sent out my invitations for my 40th birthday, and it was interesting to note I could pretty much split them into three groups: friends and family of my girlfriend, work and sports club. It would be easy to underestimate the importance of my decision to join a football club a year after arriving in Denmark in 2003. And I haven’t regretted it for a moment. I first formed my own team (see G2 for details of how you can as well) made up of people I met at language school and then we together joined Copenhagen Celtic en masse. While some of us then went on to widen our footballing horizons by playing for some of the club’s other teams, it’s a fair assumption to make that all of us widened our social net. A bond quickly forms in team sport, not dissimilar to the one that kids manage in a matter of minutes, but which adults so often struggle to make. And the more I play with somebody (ooh err, missus), the stronger it becomes. In a way, the club has become a substitute for the family,
albeit a more international one, who I left behind in the UK. That’s not to say Celtic is like the Manson Family, as it’s true I’ll be on familiar territory if I attend Manson in Fact & Fiction (see G8 for details) at Husets Bio next Thursday. The night includes Russ Meyer’s Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, a film made shortly after the Sharon Tate murders in 1969 that decided to change its ending to pay a homage to Manson. How sensitive! But then again, Tate’s husband Roman Polanski, just one year later, started shooting the goriest ever Shakespeare adaptation. Asked by crew members whether he wanted to tone Macbeth down, it’s rumoured he said: “I know violence. You should’ve seen my house last summer.” Here’s hoping I won’t be saying the same after the riot I’ve got planned for my 40th. If it’s too much, I can always go on holiday and hope my apartment cleans itself. And the Travel Fair (see pages G12-15) would be a good place to start, and just to inspire you, we’ve conjured up a list of the locations that are expected to be the coolest places to go to in 2013. That’s what people tend to do when they turn 40: go on holiday and pretend that it didn’t happen. The cynics would say that I did that when I turned 30 and never, ever went back.

Season lasts from April-October; subscription 5,500kr per team; applications to play need to be received by the organisers DAI by mid-February; Rønnedgade 9,1, 2100 Cph Ø; 3929 5910; fax: 3929 5310, office hours Mon, Tue & Thu 09:00-14:30, Wed 12:30-19:00; Fri 09:00-12:00; www.daifodbold.dk YES SIR, December is a pretty decent time of year in Denmark. It is a time to get together with the family, tell the boss he’s a wanker at the Christmas party and generally eat and drink like large swine that haven’t eaten since the previous December. The ten kilos I put on every Christmas holiday can atone to that: I mean I put gravy on my gravy if you catch my drift. Yet, this sadly brings me to the one ingredient that is so forlornly missing from the whole Xmas experience here in Denmark. Football! After ravenously devouring a roasted pig, including its baked skin crust covered in thick gravy, it would be nice to burn off a few calories. Good news: the football season is just around the corner. Since all my exercise is football-related, even at home as I walk to the fridge to get a can of beer to watch the footy on TV, I’m naturally geared up to it. Come to think of it, it’s probably one of the reasons I play seven-aside footy and not 11s. Its immense popularity in Copenhagen means that there are hundreds of teams to choose from. The DAI (Dansk Arbejder Idrætsforbund) manage a seven-a-side league system that includes five tiers and approximately 250 clubs. Even better, if you have some friends or colleagues who fancy a cheeky kick-about, you can just start your own team. It costs peanuts. All you need are about ten to 12 players. Once confirmed, register with the DAI − while the deadline is offcially closed, they’ll still be able to squeeze you in if you apply by the end of February − and pay the subscription fee, which is approximately 6,000 kroner a season. At this point you need to choose a name, and sadly Randy Vesterbro has already been taken. And then you should invest in a kit that includes shirts, shorts and socks. While you don’t want to be too extravagant – players with their names emblazoned on their backs are asking for a good kicking – don’t just go for white tshirts. Besides, they have to have numbers, or the refs won’t let you play. Rules-wise, there is no offside, a yellow card warrants a five-minute sin bin and all

Copenhagen Celtic is an international club with seven teams that are always looking for new blood
free-kicks are direct. The goals are slightly bigger than hockey ones, and the pitch the same length, but slightly narrower than half a normal pitch sideline to sideline. The DAI will assign you a home ground, usually at Valby Hallen or Kløvermarken, and organise the pitches, kick-off times and refs. There are around 20 games a season – played on weekday evenings, Saturday afternoon or Sunday morning – and the league tables can be accessed via the DAI website. There is a summer break from late June to mid-August, but this still means that most of the games are played in warm conditions. With this in mind maybe, there are rotating substitutions, although only ten players can be listed for use on the team sheet that is filled out and handed to the ref before the 60-minute game. “One of our teams tried another league once,” warns Stephen Ball, the treasurer of Copenhagen Celtic (copenhagencelticfc. intheteam.com), a British/Irish club that has been playing in the DAI since the mid 1980s and currently has seven teams, four of which are sevens sides. “But you had to organise your own refs for your home games and this was particularly annoying when the other team cancelled at short notice. At least with the DAI, you know that

This Saturday and Sunday, there will also be an opportunity to get up and close with the actors and actresses after the show. EM
a late cancellation will forfeit the game.” Ball, who played 11-a-side from 1986 to 2005, enjoyed six happy seasons playing sevens in one of the DAI veteran leagues until retiring in 2011. “In sevens you’re more involved and it’s easier to get a team to get together,” he enthuses. And it’s worth pointing out that outside the DAI’s 11-a-side top division, they don’t have linesmen, which means lots of dodgy offside decisions. Of course, March might be too soon. But if there’s a silver lining, it is that early applicants for the 2014 season can argue a case to start at a higher level than the bottom ‘D’ tier. And while the league system mentioned in this article is mainly for players in their 20s and 30s, there are also DAI league systems for players aged over 33, 40 and 45, and 11-a-side football. So if you’re looking to have a laugh and lose a few Christmas pounds at the same time, get stuck in and join a team. Or if you’re feeling like the next Bill Shankly, start your own team: folk will be rushing to join you in droves.

His associations with music acts such as the Velvet Underground, his experimental film work and his iconic printmaking crossed class and culture to make him a household name. However, all those things come in second place to his globally recognisable sunglasses and trademark blonde mop. Starting this month, courtesy of the Louisiana Museum Of Modern Art, we’ll be treated to an unexpected facet of the legendary figure, via that most simple of artistic mediums: the drawing. We’ll see beyond the facade and find out about Andy before he was Warhol. Fresh from last year’s exhibition at the Frieze Art Fair in London, this selection of around 200 previously unseen drawings will certainly prove surprising to those who know of the soup can and the Mari-

lyn repeats, but little of the historical Andy. The soho maestro of mass production was once a shy and sickly child from working class Pittsburgh, and the work shown here promises to reveal more of this sensitive nature. The drawings are beautiful: the accumulative effect of them, being far removed from the Warhol we are familiar with, is surprising and even moving. Many of the drawings are made from quiet, simple lines and are usually figurative, and many of them are culled from photographs and advertisements in newspaper and magazines. This serves to remind us that we’re still looking at Andy Warhol, but the images have been reduced or translated by a unique eye and organised into their essential poetry. Warhol kept the drawings throughout his life, but in the intermediary 25 years since his death, they had been forgotten and labelled as works to be archived by the Andy Warhol Foundation. It is a fundamental ‘graphic’ style and a dynamic sense of composition that tenuously anchors them to the Warhol we know today, but as Daniel Blau, who edited the book From Silverpoint to Silver Screen: Early Drawings of Andy Warhol 1949-1959 (which features many of the drawings on display), said: “When you think of Warhol, you don’t

Not Burton’s best, but there’s life in this old dog yet MARK WALKER
Frankenweenie(11)
Dir: Tim Burton; US animation/ comedy/horror, 2012, 87 mins; Charlie Tahan, Winona Ryder, Martin Short, Martin Landau Premieres January 10 Playing nationwide
T
HIS IS Tim Burton’s animated adaptation of his own early work (a live-action short film from 1984 of the same name) – one that exhibited a style so dark that it ultimately got him fired from Disney, which subsequently launched his career as one of cinema’s master craftsmen. Frankenweenie, ironically a Disney feature, is presumably something of an apology from the super studio. Having stuck to his gothic guns, the Tim Burton we know today is a one-man brand, but as globally recognisable as Disney itself – at least to certain demographics. All that said, where Burton’s brand was once a reliable source of inventive theme-park thrills and spills, his recent films have shown this reliability slowly turning into predictability. The announcement of the scraggy-haired sprite helming a title like Willy Wonka, Dark Shadows or Alice In Wonderland coupled with the names Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter inspires at least this reviewer to groan – rather than skip gaily – to the picture house. Not because the resulting movie will probably be poor, but because ... well, I’d already seen it without seeing it. At least, that was the case until Frankenweenie. Frankenweenie harkens back to a time when Burton wasn’t boring us with films made by his left hand, but when his filmmaking crackled with innovation and originality. The same criticism of predictability could, in fairness, still be levelled at this offering, but Burton hasn’t made a film so entertaining or
One jolt of electricity was all it took to turn man’s best friend into the Frankensteins’ monster
affecting since Edward Scissorhands, which of his filmography, Frankenweenie most prominently resembles (although in truth, Edward Scissorhands would be more correctly labelled a direct descendant of the original Frankenweenie) with its conservative suburban neighbourhood and rows upon rows of identical 1950s-style houses. The girl next door is even voiced by the female lead of the same earlier film, Winona Ryder, whose casting might not exactly be surprising, but is a refreshing change from Bonham Carter. The schoolboy protagonist Victor Frankenstein looks a lot like a post-
op Michael Jackson with his pinched aquiline features. He’s a loner with a penchant for sciences and filmmaking. When Victor’s dog Sparky dies in an unfortunate incident involving a baseball and a high-speed automobile, a heartbroken Victor puts his science skills to good use and revives the little critter to wreak havoc and mayhem on the tiny community of New Holland. Any horror fan familiar with James Whale’s wonderful Frankenstein (1931) and its equally brilliant sequel Bride Of Frankenstein (1935) will not be surprised to learn that the inconspicuous windmill looming over the small
town features prominently in the film’s climax. This is perhaps the film most obviously referenced in Frankenweenie, but there are plenty more rewards for the slightly keener of viewers. This is far from a perfect film, however. The narrative engine occasionally peters out, particularly at several points in which the audience alone becomes privy to Victor’s hidden science shenanigans in his parent’s attic. But then too often, in order for the plot to develop, we’re relegated to waiting for the narrative slack to pick up, for the necessary secrets to inevitably be exposed, either discovered by his parents, school
friends or the townsfolk. Burton’s filmmaking works best when he holds a critical mirror to contemporary society, after first lulling us into the kind of false security we normally associate with tentpole entertainment. In this respect, Frankenweenie may not be not as effective as Edward Scissorhands or Mars Attacks, but Burton the filmmaker is no longer on autopilot – he has been reanimated, he’s alive! And while this exquisitely designed, crisp black and white 3D animation is tailored for a family audience, his affinity for classic horror has rarely been so infectious.
The darkest hour in Texan history since the Alamo Texas Chainsaw 3D (15) Dir: John Luessenhop; US horror, 2012, 101 mins; Bill Moseley, Alexandra Daddario, Tania Raymonde Premieres January 10 Playing nationwide
A
Her off-shoulder look may soon be accented by a decapitated head
S ONE of the most influential films of horror history, Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre from 1974 has been a victim of cultural abuse, with two conventional sequels, a prequel, a remake and a prequel to the remake. And just when horror fans thought they were safe, the
story is unleashed back onto the big screen, now in horrendous 3D. New director John Luessenhop and his team of four screenwriters know that audiences loved the 1974 movie, so much that he opens Texas Chainsaw 3D with a crude highlights reel of the original, followed by a re-enactment of the events that could have happened in the massacre’s aftermath. From here we’re transported 29 years into the future to the present, and things start shaping up like a stereotypical modern horror movie. Alexandra Daddario stars as Heather, an adopted supermarket clerk with a murky past. After receiv-
ing a letter claiming that her distant grandmother has died, she hops in a VW campervan and heads for her native Texas. Accompanied by her adulterous boyfriend Ryan (played by rapper Trey Eyez), slutty best friend Nikki, token ‘rock-dude’ friend Kenny and hunky hitchhiker Darryl, they arrive to discover that Heather has inherited the huge family mansion. It’s a double-edged sword (or saw, rather) however, as she’s yet to discover the six-foot-five leather-faced terror lurking in the basement. This is a repugnant film. Not only is it scare-free, it’s deeply misogynistic, with several upskirt tracking shots – the damsels in distress are seemingly in-
capable of keeping their clothes buttoned up while trying to flee the chainsaw-wielding maniac. After Life of Pi, I was starting to warm to the idea of 3D cinema. Seeing this, the technology and glasses are back to being nothing more than a headache-inducing gimmick, with spurts of blood wiped across the screen and chainsaws being hurtled at your face. Whilst this new film may have chickened out of using ‘massacre’ in the title, it’s certainly killed all my appreciation for the original. If you have some time to burn and cash to spend, do yourself a favour and do anything other than see Texas Chainsaw 3D. LUKE RICHARDSON

Its style of storytelling will probably appeal most to those who really want to think about the construction of a film and the universe it inhabits. ED

That’s at least what happened in the case of US ‘70s rocker Rodriguez, who was a hero to many during the South African struggle against apartheid. Swedish filmmaker Bendjelloul follows two South African fans as they try to find out what happened to their hero, and the result is as compelling as a real-life detective story. LL
Avoid like the Plague End of Watch (15) Dir: David Ayer; US action/thriller, 2012, 109 mins; Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Pena, Anna Kendrick, Natalie Martinez Writer/director David Ayer (Training Day) is a one-trick pony who likes to depict Los Angelenos who straddle the line between law and criminality. As officer Brian Taylor (Gyllenhaal) and partner Zavala (Pena) patrol the streets, Ayer attempts to weave mocking brotherly banter between ethical certitudes and racial politics. In the end,, none of it serves this over-simplified story of good versus evil. AS
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 (11)
finally comes to an end. And thank god for that. As we’ve come to expect from the last four films, Part 2’s soap-operaesque script, lacklustre direction and mind-numbing melodrama are the film’s biggest problems. But perhaps the scariest part of all comes with the introduction of some new characters, which leaves the door open for potential spin-offs. Now there’s a scary thought. LR
Hope Springs (11) Dir: David Frankel; US romcom, 2012, 100 mins; Meryl Streep, Tommy Lee Jones, Steve Carell, Mimi Rogers While the trailer makes this film look like a syrupy sex romp, only a mournful tale of relationship turmoil lurks beneath the slapstick jokes and sarcastic jibes of Hope Springs. Longtime couple Kay (Streep) and Arnold (Jones) embark on an intensive marriage counselling class in a last-ditch effort to save their marriage. The film raises faint hope and humour during the counselling session scenes, but the therapist (Carell) unfortunately then sends the couple out on intimacy exercises, shudder-worthy attempts at vulgar comedy. Short on laughs and drama alike, Hope Springs reduces Kay and Arnold’s reconciliation efforts to 100 minutes of bickering, crying, and attempts at intimacy. LR
Dir: Bill Condon; US fantasy, 2012, 119 mins; Kristin Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner, Dakota Fanning, Ashley Greene, Nikki Reed, Michael Sheen The enormously lucrative franchise that is The Twilight Saga
Also Playing Beasts of the Southern Wild (11) Dir: Benh Zeitlin; US drama/ fantasy, 2012, 94 mins; Quvenzhané Wallis, Dwight Henry, Levy Easterly, Lowell Landes Based on the play Juicy and Delicious by Lucy Alibar, this film adaptation is essentially a charming children’s coming-ofage story – a moralistic fairy tale told through magical realism. Protagonist Hushpuppy’s dedication to her father is as heartbreakingly beautiful as young Wallis’s perfectly cast face, but the film’s occasional dabbling in sentimentality, along with an overbearing score and an overreliance on voiceovers prevents the film from achieving the transcendence it aims for. MW
Jack Reacher (15) Dir: Christopher McQuarrie; US action/horror, 2012, 130 mins; Tom Cruise, Rosamund Pike, Robert Duvall, Richard Jenkins Cruise is the eponymous antihero here: an enigmatic exmilitary cop bringing criminals to justice. While he may not have the blonde locks or towering height, the pint-size patron saint of Scientology is strong here, and the embellished script allows space for the supporting cast to shine. A scattering of good moments, however, can’t stop Jack Reacher from overstaying its running time – the film takes itself far too seriously to be mindless entertainment. LR

Life of Pi (11)
The Hobbit (11)
Dir: Ang Lee; US Adventure/ drama, 2012, 130 mins; Suraj Sharma, Irrfan Khan, Gerard Depardieu, Rafe Spall, Tabu This beautiful adventure movie is an absolute must-see, even if the plot stinks. It’s a bottomless box of visual delights: colours have never been so vivid. But although writer David Magee does his best to cloak a very corny plot, elements of the baggy original novel still creep in. Despite the narrative compromise, the film is a much-needed bit of heart-warming magic during the frosty season. LR
Dir: Peter Jackson; US/New Zealand Adventure/Fantasy, 2012, 169 mins; Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, Richard Armitage, Hugo Weaving The grandiloquence of the film will please the fanatics, but leave those on the fence potentially nauseous. Although some of the performances impress, the storyline is flabby, and the writers struggle to hatch a consistently entertaining story to meet the film’s excessive length. LR
Killing Them Softly (15)
Dir: Ben Affleck; US thriller, 2012, 120 mins; Ben Affleck, John Goodman, Bryan Cranston, Alan Arkin, Clea Duvall, Tate Donovan, Victor Garber While Affleck has gone to some lengths to deliver a restrained and tasteful film, the script itself is determined to show off, with the climax taking every opportunity to ratchet up the drama quite shamelessly. It might make for highly entertaining cinema, but falls short in convincing us of the narrative’s authenticity. For a film about disguise, this film masquerades as one belonging to the dangerous fringes of political filmmaking, but reveals itself to be quite mainstream and, like Affleck himself, a little more ordinary than it really should be. MW
Dir: Andrew Dominik; US crime/drama, 2012, 97 mins; Brad Pitt, James Gandolfini, Scoot McNairy, Ray Liotta There’s a familiarity to almost every facet of Killing Them Softly, and while there’s some welcome nostalgia to be enjoyed from this medley of greatest gangster hits, it’s all so uncomfortably derivative. The intention to provide the film with some originality and depth shows, but the plot is minimal – and alas, it never seems to gel in any meaningful way. MW

Succumb to redneck decadence in Breedings’ organic country Café Retro, Knabrostræde 26, Cph K Friday 21:00 www.café-retro.dk
E
very year our New Year’s resolutions are the same. Work more, smoke less. Exercise more, drink less. The list goes on, but abstention usually succumbs to temptation, excuses are found, and resolutions are postponed to next year, only for the lascivious cycle to continue on. So continue to indulge instead! Denying yourself the simple pleasures of life is torturous and boring. If anything, decide to try new things. That’s what the lead singer Erin Breeding of the sibling duo The Breedings did. She gave up her lucrative eight-year career as an accountant in Boston to play country rock and drink bourbon with her baby brother in Nashville, Tennessee. It requires courage to give up a model life in modern-day American suburbia for a career in music in a redneck city. But for Erin, it was about answering the call of an inner desire that would otherwise never have come her way. “I wasn’t happy in Boston,” she told the Kentucky Monthly. “You must chase your dreams, because they don’t chase you.” It seems she might be on to something as well. The Breedings may have only been playing music professionally for two years, but they’re already set to kick-start their first ever international promotional tour − for what is their second album, Fayette − in Copenhagen. “I guess you’d describe us as organic country, Americana folk,” brother Willie explained to Kentucky Monthly. “But then we do like to get into soul. Something like Linda Ronstadt and blue-eyed soul.” In simpler terms, the band’s 2011 debut album, entitled Laughing at Luck, can largely be described as a coarse form of country poprock. Erin’s distinctive voice, which Willie thinks “is the kind of voice other women connect with”, does have a Grace Slick of Jefferson Airplane feel to it. Certain tracks, like ‘Impatient Love’ and ‘3am’, have a very country melody, although the garage band-like bass and psychedelic guitar wails make the band’s music very different from southern state pop. There is, however, no doubting The Breedings’ deep connection to the South. Their Facebook account is littered with Instagram pictures of old school sit-down jam sessions, entitled with alcohol-heavy soundbites. The band were even mentioned by The New York Times in conjunction with a gig at a late-night, cigar-smoking, Rowan’s Creek Bourbon-drinking, bonfire-burning and fat rib-eating event − a true display of redneck decadence. Indolence may be unproductive, but it is very relaxing. Smoking might be bad for you, but it looks badass. Drinking may ruin your liver, but it will do wonders for your confidence. It may be a new year, but that does not change the fact that things sensibly spurned frequently feel all the more gratifying when indulged. So why not celebrate the fact that 2012 did not bring on the Mayan apocalypse and make 2013 a celebration of living by giving into temptation. Quit your job, chase your dream and enjoy life. And what better way to take those first sinful steps than bringing in the new year of decadence with a bit of southern comfort at Café Retro? bjarke smith-meyer

Lille Vega; 21:00; 125kr With just one EP behind them at this juncture, the Danish group are one of Copenhagen’s hottest prospects. Having already played at the Roskilde Festival, Germany’s Fusion Festival, Amsterdam’s Melkweg and SPOT Festival, they are already making giant leaps in the industry. Their unique combination of drum and bass has lifted the genre out of the more urban Manchester set and brought it into the alternative rock sphere, hence the number of major music publications who are feasting on Troels Abrahamsen and co’s bold experiments.
The Oilly Wallace Band
Charlie Scott’s, Skindergade 43, Cph K; 22:00; free adm This is another one of Copenhagen’s hidden jazz clubs situated in the heart of the city. Run by a hub of resident jazz artists who take it in turns to play the weekend slots, Charlie Scott’s is one of Copenhagen’s proud jazz institutions and very much favoured by the bulging jazz community. Playing tonight will be Oilly Wallace and his trio of jazzmen. Showcasing Chicagoinspired bass-lines with a sprinkling of modern fuzz, Charlie Scott’s is a superb venue to start out your night on the town.

Home At 7
Lille Vega; 21:00; sold out The Danish-South African singer has become one of the country’s most celebrated singers in only a few years. Currently touring with Danish pop act LOC – and featuring on his hit single ‘Helt Min Egen’ – fans will be eager to hear Moleko’s life-affirming new material from the album Lykken er... (2012) live. Moleko is a good name to have on your radar and is likely to be up there with Scandinavia’s biggest pop stars like Medina, Lykke Li and Robyn, so keep your eyes peeled for future concerts if you can’t get your hands on a pair of tickets for tonight’s gig. Note that Moleko will be singing in Danish.
Drop Inn, Kompagnistræde 34, Cph K; 00:00; free adm One of the better cover acts in Copenhagen, vocalist Anders Krogh and his trio walk you through a selection of pop hits from U2 and Prince through to David Bowie and The Police. More of a shape-shifter than a Saturday night karaoke contestant, the band are so confident in the quality of their covers that they’ve taken the name Home At 7 (not exactly obvious, but it means that they’ll be so impressive that you’ll be moving your feet until morning comes).

This cosy concert may have been slightly less than impressive, but was far from disappointing
anecdotes with the audience. With Dybdahl never in much of a hurry to transition from one to the other, the concert was a perfect coupling of intimacy and sound. Dybdahl’s signature style – a blend of guitar-driven tracks, Jeff Buckley-style vocals and a hint of Elvis’s blues – have earned him local and international acclaim since the release of his first album, That Great October Sound, in 2002. But despite the acclaim afforded to of his initial endeavours, he has struggled ever since to match
the success of his earlier albums. While the atmosphere and quality of performance were hard to beat, the lack of originality Dybdahl has been battling was reflected in his performance. It was easy to feel as though I’d been to this concert before, even as a first-time spectator. The lines with which Dybdahl charmed the audience were, as fellow concert-goers told me, exactly the same he’d used with Vega audiences in years past. He played only one song from an upcoming album, and he instead

Global, Nørre Allé 7, Cph N; 20:00; 80kr Led by bandleader, vocalist, and flashy dresser Daniel Broman, the band’s intense, reggaeinspired tunes are big on catchy bass-lines and hearken back to old-school ska beats reminiscent of The Villains. Following a recent concert in Ghana, the band were appalled by the living conditions of the villagers in the remote village of Dzogadze and played a concert to provide aid for the locals. All the proceeds from tonight’s concert will go towards an effort to bring about a basic sanitary sewage system. Daniel van der Noon
Solid, steady, but little we haven’t seen before
hen the first notes floated out over the audience on this pre-Christmas night, it was easy to forget where you were. Never mind the lights or the jam-packed concert hall – this felt much more like a coffee shop or a friend’s basement than Store Vega, and I was convinced that the crooner onstage was an old friend, not acclaimed singersongwriter Thomas Dybdahl. After all, you’re bound to feel a sort of familiarity anytime that a musician greets an expectant audience with a chuckle and a warm “we’ve sung together before, haven’t we?” It was exactly this sense of warmth that Dybdahl maintained throughout the evening, alternating between his delicate, blues-tinged tracks and answering questions or sharing

stuck to years-old tracks that he knew from experience would go down well with his audience. While his performance met expectations, it didn’t exceed them – and his reluctance to take risks cost the concert any sense of originality. He didn’t disappoint, but he didn’t exactly blow me away either. Even so, the audience didn’t seem to mind the lack of creativity. Perhaps the pinnacle of the night came when he introduced crowd favourites like ‘Cecilia’ and ‘From Grace’, both of which were met with enthused reactions from the audience. Their eager singing along during both songs all but drowned out Dybdahl’s own voice. All in all, Dybdahl’s concert provided a relaxing premonition of the week of holiday celebrations to follow: comfortable, cosy, and entirely predictable. Given the lack of surprises, it would be a hard sell to convince me to shell out next time for the same thing. Jessica Hanley
Nightlife The Fried Okra Band Mojo Bar, Løgnangstræde 21, Cph K; Fri 22:00; 70kr The three-bit blues band led by guitarist and vocalist Morten Lunn offer good old-fashioned blues: palpable bass-lines and a handful of catchy hooks. Although not daringly original, their jangly blues rock is catchy, with Lunn’s seasoned vocals holding the band together. This concert would go down swimmingly well with a drink in hand, and although it’s not one of the highlights this week, it’s worth a look if you’re in the city and on your way to a chintzy club night. Adam Tensta Rust, Guldbergsgade 8, Cph N; Fri 23:00; 80kr This Stockholm-raised rapper has topped the Swedish charts on numerous occasions and claimed a Swedish Grammy award in 2008 for his debut It’s A Tensta Thing (2008). Cashing in on his sharp wit and dogged lyrics, the hit record took him around the world supporting superstars such as Jay-Z and
Rihanna and performing as one of the highlights at Roskilde Festival in 2009. Warming up tonight will be British grime MC T-Man, whose thumping dub-step has had a major influence on Manchester’s infamous dub scene. RESoLUTIONS KB18, Kødboderne 18, Cph V; Sat 23:00; 50kr You can always rely on KB18 for a decent dancefloor and stage full of DJs when the weekend kicks in. Tonight is KB18’s New Year’s resolution party, offering punters the opportunity to give in to the cliché diets, debt-paying and smoking pledges and to party like it’s 2013. With a hatful of Copenhagen DJs, including Audioblog, DJ Evig Glad, Mike Brown, DiscoShaman, Rexie Lex, Møltov and Reflux, it’s likely that all your resolutions will have evaporated into a cloud of Marlboro smoke by sunrise.

Inclusion – Exclusion THE THEME OF exclusion has always played an important role in art. Here is a guide to different exhibitions dealing with themes of inclusion and exclusion, the wanted and unwanted, and the private and shared. The exhibitions explore different subjects such as what it means to be a Copenhagener, the particular political and historical situation of the apartheid regime, the use of humour in dealing with social exclusion, and the question of what can be shared with others and what remains private. Becoming a Copenhagener Københavns Museum, Vesterbrogade 59, Cph V; permanent exhibition Most people living in Copenhagen were not born in Copenhagen. They come to the city because they have fallen in love with its streets and buildings or perhaps one of its inhabitants. They come in search of jobs, education, friendships, or a new identity. The exhibition Becoming a Copenhagener tells the story of immigration as a key ingredient in Copenhagen’s growth and development. Under the themes of ‘Arrivals’, ‘Wanted-Unwanted’, ‘Urban Communities’ and ‘Cosmopolitan Copenhagen’, the exhibition explores the physical traces left by the citizens of Copenhagen in former times, the urbanisation process, conflicts and hybrid life forms − seen through the lens of immigration.

Dimensions of Sharing Overgaden, Institute of Contemporary Art, Overgaden Neden Vandet 17, Cph K; ends Jan 20, 10:00-17:00 In the group exhibition Dimensions of Sharing, Suzanna Asp, Maija Luutonen, Sini Pelkki and Pilvi Takala explore the interface between physical and mental spaces, and between the private and the shared. The focal point of the exhibition is the question of what can be shared with others, and what remains private. Through photography, video, painting, drawing and installation, this issue is unfolded both in the interplay between the artists’ individual practices, and in the encounter between work and viewer. The works reach out to the viewer in different ways, focusing on the special language of art and the way it communicates in public, while at the same time resonating with something very private within us.

WALKING down Gothersgade towards Kulørbar should be a strong indication of what kind of a night you’d expect in this part of town. On one side of the street, there’s a young couple with their tongues down each others’ throats. On the other side, there’s a woman throwing up in a gutter with her friend holding her hair up. And in the middle of the road there’s a drunken fist fight in full swing. Kulørbar itself is in a courtyard hidden away from the commotion, but that’s not to say that it’s a quiet joint. The huge building is complete with big bouncers in trench coats with ear pieces, flashing lights, and the muffled thump of heavy bass coming through the walls. The bar/club is broken up into three sections. There’s Kulørbar itself, Top Dollar and Den Røde Baron, and each part offers a completely different experience. Kulørbar for example, with its sticky floor and podium dance poles, is full of young girls wearing heavy make-up and 40-something men dancing around them. Then you have the drunks at the bar, barely able to keep their eyes open and swaying from side to side with their index fingers in the chair, trying to sing along to the latest dance tracks. Whereas Top Dollar is practically empty, bar a group of angry looking women with short hair and tattoos, arguing over a table football game. But Den Røde Baron, on the other hand, is by far the most random of the lot. Everything seems to be vintage. Jack

Beauteous boutiques IN A CITY where you don’t necessarily speak the language, it isn’t easy to discover those special little boutiques that tickle your fancy. But tucked just behind mammoth department store Magasin are a bunch of shops that will keep you coming back time and again.

There’s nothing like a nice pair waiting for you at the bar
Daniel’s boxes lie next to life-sized cigar store Indian statues, and white candles drip hot wax onto wooden tables spread across the room. The lack of strobe lights and green lasers is a relief for the eyes, yet the dark corners of the bar require you to strain them to see what’s lurking in the midst. However, what’s more of a concern is the terrible ‘90s music blaring from the speakers from the likes of Madonna, Dolly Parton, MC Hammer and the Spice Girls, and the mouths of a group in their late 30s, clearly nostalgic for the good old days, who are murdering choruses you thought couldn’t
get any worse. Yeah, this bar oozes class, nowhere more so than from the toilet paper stuck to the women’s high heels as they leave the toilets. The uneven pool tables, coarse from a decade of spilled beer, the cougar sitting in the corner of the room eyeing up anything that walks, the old men prying on young girls, the sinks clogged up with vomit, the cheap beer, cheap shots, cheesy music and fights outside. It all adds up to one hell of a night. And you know what? You’ll love it! BJARKE SMITH-MEYER

BELLA CENTER TRAVEL FAIR
WELCOME I
T’S ONLY just occurred to me that the song ‘Holiday’ isn’t even about a holiday. All these years and I thought Madonna was making a profound commentary on how Americans are content to ‘holiday’ at home and never experience the big wide world outside their borders. Yeah baby: “In every nation/ It’s time for the good times/Forget about the bad times/One day to come together” – a bit like ‘Imagine’ I always thought. But Madonna’s American, innit! She’s singing about a day off work, not a trip abroad – she would have called it ‘Vacation’ otherwise, which doesn’t quite have the same ring to it. Not sure I like that word. It implies you’ve vacated somewhere and that somewhere was infested by insects. And then when you vacation somewhere else, you take them all with you. Sadly for many of us, this is an alltoo familiar scenario. A hastily booked package tour, too last-minute to properly assess the alternatives, and then seven flea-bitten, undernourished days later, you return to your homeland more in need of a break than before you left.
This is where the Travel Fair comes in. Under just one roof, it has every type of holiday that you can possibly imagine, to every corner of the planet: hot/ cold, sporty/relaxing, expensive/cheap, faraway/local, family/singles, quiet/relentless – it’s all here at the Bella Center to peruse, so you can take your time and select the kind of holiday that suits you. Save yourself the heartbreak of wading through hundreds of villas that all look the same, website comments that look suspiciously like they’ve been written by the resort itself, and details that look like they’ve been Google translated and run through a pigeon English spellchecker. After all, this is the most significant purchase you’ll probably make this year – the least you can do is dedicate the time it deserves, and a couple of hours spent looking for the ideal booking in return for a couple of weeks of bliss sounds like a fair trade-off to me. So whatever you call it – holiday, vacation, sabbatical, beano – the Travel Fair has all the answers. All you need to do is attend. BEN HAMILTON

Everything
You need to know
L
ooking for an escape route from the annual trips to the inlaws’ summer-house? Or perhaps you just enjoy the week of inevitable dampness and claustrophobic sheltering indoors, perusing well-thumbed copies of Se og Hør or emulating our Ryder Cup heroes on the dilapidated local mini-golf course. Because a short Metro ride to the Bella Center on the days between 18 and 20 January can give you some inspiration for planning the perfect getaway – or failing that, a chance to dream. The Holiday Fair has areas dedicated to travel, camping, sport, golf, diving and holiday homes. You can sample gastronomic specialities from the four corners of the globe, watch the world come to you in the Film Lounge, try a whole variety of sports and leisure activities, take instruction in diving in one of the specially constructed pools, as well as visiting all the usual stands from the well-established travel agencies. For kids with itchy feet, Legoworld, Pippiworld and the CPH diveshow should provide plenty to keep them busy. Revisiting Herr Hitler and Pearl Harbour Cultours is a travel agency with a difference. It will march you off to historical destinations such as Hitler’s underground rocket factory near Harzen where prisoners from the local concentration camp manufactured V1 and V2 rockets. Cultours’ idea of a beach holiday is a jaunt to the D-Day invasion beaches of Normandy or even a more upmarket and exotic excursion to Pearl Harbour. Expert guides are provided,

gives you the chance to buy your own sumptuous summer-house close to the palm-lined beaches of Thailand, complete with a five-year rental agreement if you want to rent out the property. This could be one for those with one eye on retirement.
Whisky galore on the high road
Be the James Bond of the campsite
“You’ll take the high road and I’ll take the low road” − quite literally, if you are a guest of Liselotte Douglas. Her marriage to a Scotsman and career as a stress coach inspired her to lead groups of Danes from Holy Island to the remote whisky distilleries of the Glens. Her tours not only have a root in the love of trekking in the beautiful Highlands, but also in the philosophies of mindfulness where the rhythm of your walking boots will take over and give you a feeling of being completely in the moment.
Want to feel like a dashing James Bond recently equipped by gadget specialist Q? Well, that’s admittedly a bit of an exaggeration, but AB Camping will be demonstrating its range of thief-beating Pacsafe products including: Wire security nets for backpacks, a lockable iPod case that still allows you to listen to music, a well-disguised belt with a secret pocket for notes and coins, and stylish handbags with steel wire sewn into the shoulder strap. All designed to give you peace of mind while on holiday.
Adventures with Pippi For the nostalgic travellers, a trip to Sweden is on the cards, for who can resist the charms of Pippi Longstocking? A quick trip over the water to Vimmerby transports you and the family to Astrid Lindgren’s world. Familiar characters − including Karlsson på taket (on the roof ), Emil, Ronja Røverdatter (the robber’s daughter) and the pigtailed Pippi − entertain the guests in streets and houses taken from Lindgren’s beloved books. Summer-houses in summery locations “Let’s buy a summer house,” says your significant other. It’s time to up the stakes with a visit to the Oriental Invest stand. You might have seen them on TV in ‘Hammerslag’, the guess-the-houseprice TV show on DR1. Oriental Invest
A smile on your face in more ways than one Canal trips are a classic highlight of many a tourist destination, but rarely root canal treatment. Tandrejser combines quality dental treatment at Hungarian prices with a day or two in the bustling city of Budapest. Tandrejser works together with a dental clinic in Budapest to offer all-inclusive package tours that provide interpreters, taxis from the airport and a hotel room in the centre of town. No need to feel down in the mouth with Danish dentist bills − an overnight stay in Hungary will soon put the smile back on your face. So even if the financial crisis has hit you hard, the Holiday Fair will be a place where, for 90kr, you can allow yourself to dream a little. Perhaps there is an alternative after all in 2013 to the musty cottages of the Danish coast. Pete Streader

From indulging Robinson Crusoe fantasies in the Polynesian paradise of the Cook Islands to black rhino-spotting in Zimbabwe’s strikingly beautiful hinterland, Ruth Styles rounds up the destinations that should be at the top of your list over the next 12 months The comeback kid: Sri Lanka
Years of war and the 2004 tsunami have kept Sri Lanka off most itineraries, but thanks to massive government investment and the end of hostilities in 2009, the country is firmly back on the tourist map. All of which is good news for travellers because Sri Lanka has much to offer. A 2,000-year-old culture, eight UNESCO sites, palmfringed beaches and tropical jungle inland make it one of the Indian Ocean’s most diverse places to holiday, while the low prices make it more accessible than most.
Having a moment: truly ‘great’ Britain
Call it the Olympic effect if you like, but there’s no denying that Britain is having a moment. Forbes magazine’s most culturally-influential country of 2012 has even more to offer in 2013, including the opening of Europe’s tallest building, London’s Renzo Piano-designed Shard, in February, and a wealth of cultural and music festivals to look
forward to during the summer months. Away from the capital, head west to Northern Ireland’s Londonderry – the UK capital of culture for 2013 – and south to Cornwall, where you’ll find spectacular beaches and some seriously bijou places to stay.
The diver’s dream: Tobago
Frequently overshadowed by its larger sister island, Trinidad, Tobago offers a beguiling combination of perfect white sand beaches, few tourists and some of the best diving in the world. The Japanese Gardens reef just off Speyside in the north of the island is home to the world’s largest brain coral, while Buccoo Reef has enough marine life to keep you entertained for hours. Stay at the Magdalena Grand (magdalenagrand.com), where along with wonderful sea views, you’ll find the Caribbean’s best piña coladas courtesy of its consistently charming barman, Kevin.
Off beaten tracks: the Philippines
Both culturally and physically separate from the rest of Asia, the Philippines remain relatively undiscovered, although that’s largely down to its size. With more than 7,000 islands, there’s enough room to keep even the most intrepid explorer busy for months, while for everyone else, there’s miles of gleaming white beaches, emerald-green paddy fields and the exhilarating organised shambles that is the capital, Manila. While the country has no shortage of backpacker-type dive hotels, it’s garnering a reputation for serious luxury, courtesy of its growing army of boutique hotels. The tiny 15-room Eskaya (eskayaresort.com), tucked away on the tropical Panglao Island, is a case in point.
Back to its best: Beirut
The Lebanese capital has had a bad press in the past, largely due to the civil war that ripped the country apart during the ‘80s. Although the bullet holes remain, the city is now a vibrant
hotspot that is swiftly becoming one of the best places to party in the Middle East. Wonderful Ottoman and colonial-era architecture make it easy on the eye, as do the snow-capped Lebanon Mountains that flank the city’s eastern boundary. Thanks to the maniacal drivers, crossing the road is an extreme sport, but most of the locals are warmly welcoming.
real Wild West: Arizona
Complete with towering cacti, miles of dusty desert and oldfashioned frontier towns, Arizona is the perfect place to indulge your inner cowboy. At the White Stallion Ranch (whitestallion. com) in the Saguaro National Park, you can try your hand at traditional Western pastimes such as team cattle penning and horse-whispering before retreating to the equine-themed bar for a chilled out sun-downer. Further north, the mighty Grand Canyon and red massifs of Monument Valley are geological marvels that are not to be missed.
Nordic cool: Stockholm
Copenhagen might be leading the Nordic revival, but Stockholm is teed up to give the Danish capital a real run for its money in 2013. In May, the new ABBA museum opens in Djurgarden, while this month sees the launch of Nosh & Chew – a ridiculously cool addition to Stockholm’s smorgasbord of dining options, located at the equally stylish Berns Hotel (berns.se). The Swedish capital is also gaining ground on its Danish rival thanks to the enduring popularity of Steig Larsson’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and its kick-ass heroine, Lisbeth Salander. Sarah who?
Remote paradise: the Cook Islands
Scattered across the western Pacific Ocean, the Cook Islands are a tropical wonderland that marry a 1,000-year-old Polynesian culture with the opportunity to let your inner Robinson Crusoe run riot. Rarotonga, the largest of the 15 islands, offers a magical mixture of dense wildlife-
filled jungles, jagged sawtooth peaks, bone-white beaches and the chance to relax in style at the isolated Te Vakaroa Villas (tevakaroa.com). Overlooking the stunning Muri Lagoon, each of the six cottages comes with a private infinity pool and a personal guide.
perfect city break: New Orleans
An area that has become synonymous with the word ‘hurricane’ might not sound like the ideal spot for a break, but New Orleans – and the surrounding state of Louisiana – are well worth the price of a plane ticket. Swampy bayous, cleaned-up golden sand beaches and New Orleans’ FrancoAmerican brand of bonhomie make the region completely irresistible. The old French Quarter remains a vibrant place to tuck into a plate of fried catfish, while the Afro-Caribbean soundtrack emanating from the bars and clubs provides the perfect foil for the city’s grand European-style architecture.

Where to go on holiday this year
adventurous in Africa: Chiredzi, Zimbabwe
This year’s Livingstone bicentenary is the perfect excuse to take a fresh look at southern Africa Zimbabwe in particular. Although the malign influence of Robert Mugabe is still evident, away from Harare you’ll find some of the most beauteous countryside on Earth, diverse wildlife and incredibly friendly people. Head to the Malilangwe Reserve in the remote Chiredzi district to take a closer look at the animals, as well as the chance to indulge in some dictator-approved luxury – Pamushana (singita.com), the reserve’s eco-friendly lodge, was once a favoured destination of the Gaddafi clan.
Natural born thriller: Lewa Conservancy, Kenya
Owned by the well-connected Craig family, the Lewa Conservancy (lewasafaricamp.com) in northern Kenya is famous for its record-breaking numbers of Grévy’s zebra and for being the spot where Prince William broke a million aspiring princesses’ hearts by proposing to Kate Middleton. Follow in royal footsteps and bed down for the night in one of the Conservancy’s luxe ecotents, before heading out at dawn for a closer look at those zebra and spectacular views of the sun rising over Mount Kenya.
Ruth Styles is an awardwinning travel and lifestyle journalist, who writes for the Daily Mail, the Evening Standard and National Geographic Traveller among others. Based in London, she has also lived in Africa and the Middle East, and spends much of the year roaming the globe. Favourite places: Namibia, Oman, Zanzibar and Copenhagen.

Alan Partridge’s Mid-Morning Matters BBC Ent, Mon 22:30 or Thu 22:45
THE PATHOS of an entertainer unable to leave behind his most popular creation is one worthy of the finest Greek tragedy. And they don’t come more gut-wrenching than Steve Coogan and the apparent stranglehold Alan Partridge has had over his career. Because as many minor Hollywood films as this subtly brilliant comic genius makes, and as many new TV characters he creates, he’s always there – it’s an uncomfortable relationship that Coogan openly acknowledges, reaping tremendous comic mileage out of in The Trip. Alan Partridge’s Mid-Morning Matters is a radio version of his TV chat show Knowing Me, Knowing You from the mid-1990s – a return to a winning formula that makes good sense given how stale
Partridge’s life had become outside the studio. While the first series of I’m Alan Partridge (1997) was one of the best sitcoms of the 1990s, the second (2002) was a tired affair – not dissimilar to the Partridge autobiography, which will be made into a film later this year. Also poignant, and probably heading for the cinema, is the story of David Headley, the half-Pakistani, half-American who scouted the key targets of the 2008 Mumbai attacks that left 164 dead, and a year later visited the Jyllands-Posten offices in Copenhagen on a similar mission. The perfect terrorist (DR2, Wed 23:00) reveals how it failed. More terror is inflicted in The Slap (SV2, Sun 20:00), an eight-episode series set in Melbourne, where a grown man’s unwise decision to hit
a child is told from the perspective of eight different characters, each time revealing a little bit more. Elsewhere, 2011 mixed martial arts doc Fightville (DR2, Tue 20:40) has been panned by the critics despite a promising premise; watch the Alan Carr: Chatty Man Xmas 2012 special (BBC Ent, BBC Ent, Mon 22:30 Alan Partridge’s Mid-Morning Matters Sat 23:05) just weeks after its UK screening; there’s another chance to see the acclaimed Carlos (DRK, Sat 12:25) and the doc President Reagan (DRK, ep1: Fri 16:30, ep2: Thu 21:00); don’t miss the third season of The Big C (SV1, Sun 22:50); and sit back and enjoy Man United vs Liverpool (K6, Sun 14:00) followed by Arsenal vs Man City – a belting afternoon of Premiership action this Sunday afternoon.
