I WOULD like to apologise. On Tuesday, I let my contempt for a story, a trivial but unfortunately newsworthy one about Rihanna appearing at Roskilde (see page 18 of the newspaper), get the better of me. I wanted to convey my contempt for the whole media circus that surrounds celebrity. It’s obvious from the reaction of many commenters on our website that I failed. The comment has been removed from the print edition. I don’t really know much about Rihanna – in fact, I don’t regard her as a real person, rather a construct invented by music producers whose press releases are gleefully copy and pasted for all to see. I think it’s a shame this type of story has brainwashed many into thinking this is the way a trivial news story should be written: without reading between the lines or irony – just lapping it up, grateful that their parent company are advertisers or even owners. And when they’re not, and they’re gossiping, the critical ques-

tion becomes what paragraph they can subtly squeeze in the obligatory domestic violence reference – to fill you in on all the grisly details just in case you missed it the first 15,000 times. So I just cut to the chase. I didn’t know it at the time, but if you put what I wrote into Google Images, you’ll actually find a punchbag with her face on it. Download it and swap her face for mine if it makes you feel better. And it’s fair to say I would deserve it. The episode has of course made me doubt my limits. For example, last night I deleted a paragraph from my TV preview (see G20) in which I berated the way we consume “crap about celebs”, which included the line: “Parasitical leaches email me every day offering banal rubbish about celebs, and I turn them down because I hate our readers.” But now I’m not so sure I can trust you to realise that I’m deadly serious. Elsewhere this week, beyond Burns Night (see G8 for details), there’s not much on. The scourge of January! February used to have the same problem, but then along came Wondercool (an advertiser – can’t you tell?), a month-long festival to drag us away from our warm apartments out into the cold (err, you’re supposed to be selling it!). The Room

A combination of acrobatics and dance with rigging and abseiling equipment thrown in, aerial dance is rather a shock for the untrained eye. It also makes the traditional concept of dance look like it’s from the dark ages. So a new, revolutionary way of movement is exactly what you can expect to see in the new production of The Room. Two ‘spider-women’, Danish/Israeli dancer Esther Wrobel and French circus artist Emilie Loger run, dive, climb and throw themselves around their confines. They bring new meaning to Lionel Richie’s song ‘Dancing on the Ceiling’. Anyone going to see this piece should prepare for the extraordinary − if you think it can’t be done, it probably can. It’s as if Wrobel and Loger are part of some surreal game where the laws of gravity don’t apply. While it takes a lot of courage to throw oneself from a roof or be hoisted high by a crane, Wrobel considers the extreme moves in The Room to be a crucial element of their message.

Store Scene, Ekvipagemestervej 10, Cph K; starts Mon, ends 20 March, performances at 19:00 on Fri, Tue, Thu; tickets: 125-895kr, www. kglteater.dk, 3369 6969; 225 mins with intermission; sung in French with Danish supertitles This particular production of Carmen by Scottish director David McVicar premiered at the Royal Danish Theatre three years ago and now it’s back to lift your spirits during the dull, dreary winter. Georges Bizet’s classic opera is full of steamy Spanish passion, eroticism, raucous stage scenes and familiar songs that will have you swaying on your haunches. CS

“I am trying to challenge how far it’s possible within a very clean framework to push the boundaries of how we perceive gravity and space,” she says. The concept of The Room is Wrobel’s own. While there isn’t a linear storyline as such, the name reflects the aim of the piece – to showcase the absolute limits of what one can do with aerial dance within a room. The Room is inspired by the surrealist ideas of French poet André Breton whose aim was to unite a person’s inner reality with their external reality. The piece pushes audiences to ponder the question of how solid their external view of reality actually is. Wrobel says that while questions are posed, there are no clear conclusions reached. “We won’t give people the answers … the most important thing is to raise the questions, and if we can do that then I feel like I’ve achieved what I wanted to.” At this point, one may wonder how all these questions can be portrayed through dance – but this is the beauty of aerial dance – a multi-faceted, multi-layered style of movement that represents far more than just flying limbs. “This is why I started working with it because I feel it has a lot to offer to normal stage dancing and I wanted to find out just how much,” Wrobel adds. Following his success with Cinderella in late 2011, Barry McKenna is once again the writer and director and promises a show that will delight and win over audiences of all ages. This Saturday and Sunday, there will also be an opportunity to get up and close with the actors and actresses after the show. EM

mark’s uncrowned queen of aerial dance, it would seem she has the perfect background to make this style of dance a natural extension of herself. After eight years of gymnastics in her youth, she made a bold transition into dance, forcefully trying to suppress her inner gymnast. But in 2006 she found a way to integrate both the dancer and gymnast inside her. “I started working with a Canadian company that mixed dance, circus and theatre,” she recalls. “That’s where I received my first training in aerial dance and where I fell in love with it. It was suddenly a meeting point between my background in gymnastics and dancing and where I could finally enjoy the acrobatic element engraved in my body.” Like Wrobel, you may also be quickly seduced by this style of dance, but one thing is for sure − your expectations of what can be achieved through dance will literally be turned upside-down. “I hope people sense that all things are possible … that change can happen and things can go further than we think they can,” enthuses Wrobel. Because that’s certainly what she and Loger have achieved with The Room.

Expect an impressive towering set, colourful projections, and a stage alive with a myriad of imaginatively costumed creatures and larger-than-life creepy-crawlies. PS

Selected by Dansehallerne’s artistic director Bush Hartshorn, the performances − Alma Söderberg’s Cosas (2010), My Grönholdt’s I? (2011), Jan Martens’s A small guide on how to treat tour lifetime companion (2011) and Carles Casallachs’s Por Sal y samba (2011), which deals with sadomasochistic pain and pleasure − have been chosen to inspire and challenge audiences – from this company, we wouldn’t expect anything but. But when we then take a closer look and study those details more attentively, we might get distracted from the overall piece of art and drawn into its specific details. These details may carry their own story. As such, details in art both have an effect on how we read and understand a piece of art as a whole, and they also contain their own independent meaning. Focusing on the details in art, Statens Museum for Kunst has put on a small, yet well conceptualised, exhibition. With the apt title Detaljer (Details), the exhibition is composed of works from 1700 to the 1930s and shows how artists over time have worked with details in art. It represents art movements such as neoclassicism, impressionism and abstract art. The exhibition highlights

the meaning and importance of details in art and also deals with how we experience and take in art. Consisting of about 80 drawings, paintings and graphic illustrations from both the museum’s own and other Danish art collections, the exhibitions look at how artists such as Vilhelm Hammershøi, Christen Købke, Caspar David Friedrich, Richard Mortensen and Franciska Clausen have worked with details. The exhibition consists of six rooms in linear succession, presenting the art in chronological order. Each room has its own theme dealing with topics such as the relationship between details and foreground and background, body parts and draperies. To finish off the exhibition, a section has been devoted to a discussion of whether or not modern art led to a loss of detail − for example, in impressionism where details seem less important and somewhat melted into each other. A clever feature of the exhibition is how the curators have made use of lights to stress particularly important details in the pieces on display. Carefully targeted lights illuminate the works − in some cases, it almost looks like the light is an integrated part of the artwork and has been painted onto it. If you raise your hand, you can shield the work from the light

and see how it is an additional feature and not part of the art. One of Vilhelm Hammershøi’s pieces, ‘Interior with the artist’s easel’ from 1910, is particularly interesting when accompanied by light. The light accentuates the importance of the rather detailed bowl that is placed in the painting’s back-

ground and which, without the light, is less noticeable. However, it almost looks like the light has been painted onto Hammershøi’s painting. Deltajer is not one of those exhibitions that require visitors to spend hours making their way through hundreds of works of art. It takes an hour

or so to go through the entire exhibition, including the accompanying descriptive captions. It is perhaps thanks to its conciseness that this exhibition manages to stay within its conceptual framework, dealing with the details in art, without losing its focus and the visitor’s attention. It is an exhibition

that succeeds in making its visitors aware of the importance of details, taking us through a small, but carefully chosen selection of art where the details are crucial to helping us understand the pieces as a whole.

OR THOSE of us with British or Irish ancestry, the need for Americans to define themselves in terms of their (distant) relations is something of an oddity. Nowhere is this more pronounced than in Boston, Massachusetts, where an entire Irish/American subculture is celebrated. In a case of life imitating art, this identity is becoming more pronounced with each Hollywood

film that deals with it. Enter the Dropkick Murphys. Describing themselves as a ‘Celtic punk’ band, they were lucky enough to get a single in the hit film The Departed − a song that catapulted them into the mainstream. Although the band owes most of its success to that song (‘I’m shipping up to Boston’), they have in fact been playing their particular style of punk rock for a lot longer. Formed in 1996 in East Milton, Massachusetts, the original line-up began rehearsing in the basement of a local barber’s shop. They soon attracted the attention of The Mighty Mighty Bosstones and supported them

on their 1997 ‘Let’s Face it Tour’, significantly increasing their exposure and fan base. Their first release, Do or Die, was met with only limited success and did not enjoy strong radio support, despite an improved line-up that saw The Bruisers singer Al Barr join the band. In 1999, they released their followup album, The Gang’s All Here. The record contained elements of more traditional hardcore and featured their first real experimentation with an Irish sound t h a t would come to define them.

Another series of line-up changes occurred in the years 2000 and 2001, leading to a more interesting sound with the addition of a piper, bagpipe and mandolin player. The 2001 album Sing Loud, Sing Proud was featured on local radio and enabled them to play larger venues, leading to a series of interesting collaborations with artists such as Shane MacGowan of the Pogues and Cock Sparrer’s Colin McFaull. By 2004, the band began gaining momentum and through their close association with sporting organisations such as the Boston Red Sox, they saw their songs played at large

sporting games around the US. Their fifth studio album, The Warrior’s Code, was released in 2005, featuring ‘I’m coming up to Boston’, which was originally written for an earlier album. Coming at the right time and place, the song caught the attention of the producers of The Departed and the rest is history. Since then the band have moved from strength to strength, and their performance on St Patrick’s Day each year is now legendary. They have played with a host of well-known artists, including Bruce Springstein, and have featured in more films, including the 2010 film

The Fighter and the Academy Award-nominated documentary Restrepo in 2011. Unlike many bands considered one-hit wonders, Dropkick Murphys have not dwelt upon it or sought to recreate the magic. They have moved forward and their sound is continually changing and adapting. This year sees the release of their new album, Signed and Sealed in Blood, and they are currently touring select European cities in support of it. Vega will be the perfect venue for this band. Expect an energetic performance of hyped-up Celtic punk that could only come from America. ANDY RUGG

Calm melodies can quickly switch to powerful vibrato choruses, enriched with lyrics about love, moving mountains and the philosophies of life. Soothing music at its best.

othing says cool like an accordion. That is, if you’re a gypsy. But then again, when bands like Tako Lako are heralded as the next best thing by the likes of MTV, maybe we as a society should start to re-evaluate what it is to be badass on the music scene. So if you don’t think a crazy improvisation on a gypsy violin is as cool as the wandering wails of a Jimmy Page guitar solo, well you might be part of a shrinking minority. Rock ‘n’ Roll is dead baby, and the gypsy sound is setting up camp and taking its place. Well that’s what seems be taking place in Denmark anyway, as thousands of Danes are getting increasingly caught up in the Balkan sound caravan throughout the nation.

Enter Tako Lako. “We’re a band that plays psychedelic gypsy beat,” band harmonicist Andreas Broby Jensen told The Copenhagen Post. “That’s what we choose to call what we do. It’s a pretty mashedup type of music. We combine heavy beats with a psychedelic acoustic vibe.” And it’s not just the Danes who love it, as it seems to be attracting attention across the North Sea as well, where the band has been promoting their debut album Through The Mud at festivals like Glastonbury.

“I think it has something to do with the positive vibes that come hand in hand in Balkan culture,” lead singer Ognjen Curcic told Festival TV. “And that positivism comes through in our upbeat music that focuses on enjoying the moment and living life to the fullest.” Good vibes aside, another reason why Tako Lako have managed to succeed in Denmark is also down to their ability to experiment with different music genres and artists during their high-tempo gigs. That mix of hard hip-hop and booming Balkan energy has proved to be very popular, showing that not only can Tako Lako adapt to other music genres, they can adopt them as well. “Tako Lako can be anything,” bassist Philip Zubin Hormozi Køppen told The Copenhagen Post. “People might call us a Balkan beat group, but our inspiration comes from many different bands that are not related to the gypsy genre as such.” The band have managed to gather quite a following and are already planning on breaking into the German and English market in the New Year. Unlikely to sell a single vinyl during his career, but instead hundreds upon thousands of downloads, Pope is indicative of the dismal direction of music, where Youtube hits equal success. Broken down to the bare basics, Pope is a run-of-the-mill pop-star and as soon as the tide turns, his name and flowery pop songs will be all but forgotten.

The Canadian Real Blues Magazine went as far as to laud it as one of the world’s best blues albums of all time for its nostalgic charm and organic production. Expected to be as popular as his set last year, organisers anticipate a sold-out gig, so see that you get hold of tickets beforehand. Socks in the spotlight YES. THAT’S a new name at the top there. And though it looks Danish, I’m British. I’ve parented through everything from Ninja Turtles to Teletubbies, but questions like: “Where does the light go when you turn it off?”, “Why doesn’t our dog have a belly button?” and “Where do odd socks go to die?” still catch me out. And I still find dirty socks on the couch. Thinking back, I devised an effective remedy for that one with my ‘big boys’: first I introduced a clothing allowance and then I started snipping the ends off any socks found on or around the couch. That kept them on their toes. They got the message and only a couple of socks had to bite the dust – not that it’s dusty under my couch … It broke my principle of making things last, but odd socks fit in nicely with this week’s theatre theme and my general aim of keeping one step ahead, channelling children’s imagination − rather than following them around wiping it off the walls. Sock monsters are fun. Try the sock on your child’s hand – heel over the knuckles with toes forming the mouth and mark the eyes etc before sticking or sewing them on. Fabric can run, so test it in water before using it on pale socks. You might want to wash the socks first too. The listings below should inspire plenty of sock monster adventures back home. PLENUM is a Nørrebro hang-around where you stay far longer than planned because you lose track of time and just keep ordering those extra pints. Located on Sankt Hans Torv, it is fairly busy. There is usually enough room, though, for both smaller and larger groups to find tables in the bar’s two sections. It also seems that at any time of the year, the outside tables are the most popular – in the summer with good reason, but why the Danes insist on sitting outside during the winter is more of a mystery. The interior of Plenum is decorated with quotes from relatively famous people. The idea is to probably entertain with insightful observations, but really it doesn’t seem all that profound. For entertainment other than their drinks and beer selection, Plenum has a decent selection of board games, so it is always possible to have a game of backgammon, penguin or chess. This also seems to be a much used way to widen the company to the adjoining tables. Plenum has a limited but select menu. What they offer is above average in the sandwich and salad category. The prices are reasonable – you pay between 55 and 85 kroner. Their cakes are perhaps slightly more average. It is an all-crowds kind of place, attracting students, mothers on maternity leave, first dates, and the after-work brigade craving a beer. In the evening it is a good and less noisy alternative to many of the other bars in the area.

The selection of beers at Plenum is pretty standard, with prices ranging from 30 to 50 kroner for a pint. They offer a limited but good selection of drinks – their Dark and Stormy is especially recommendable. Their coffee is decent enough, but given the location, there are other actual coffee places in the area that would be more obvious to go to if you want really good coffee. The service is friendly and compe-

tent. Even when it is at its most busy, they are speedy and efficient, so it does not seem like you spend half your time waiting to order or be served. All in all, Plenum is a good place for a pint after work, a place to meet someone you actually want to have a conversation with, or as the first stop before a concert at Rust. SOFIE GRAVERS JACOBSEN

COMING from Australia to Denmark was quite a shock to the system. Sure, there was the issue of adapting to a new culture, and of course the hotly debated weather, but for me the real sore point was Denmark’s supermarkets (if you can really call them that). A limited selection and mainly imported fruit and vegetables were the first things that really struck me. In Australian supermarkets, there are aisles after aisles of different options − so much so that I’ve often thought we probably have more toothpaste options than the population of Copenhagen. That being said, when I recently set about making a lovely

authentic Thai Beef Salad, I was really quite excited to see that despite needing the odd exotic ingredient or two, it was actually possible to make this tasty dish with most things that can be easily acquired from the local supermarket. An added bonus for those looking to spice up Danish taste buds is that Copenhagen does have a great variety of Asian supermarkets. Now whilst the ingredients needed for this dish may seem excessive, and indeed off-putting to those short on time, I promise it is actually a great and quick midweek meal that is sure to hit the spot, without breaking the bank balance.

It is best if you cover it with plastic wrap and place it in the fridge, turning occasionally, for two hours to develop the flavours, but if you’re short on time, just marinade it for as long as is possible. Next preheat a barbecue grill or chargrill pan on high. A wok or frying pan could also be used instead. Once heated, cook the steak (whole) for 2-3 minutes each side for medium or until cooked to your liking. Then transfer it to a plate, cover it with foil and set it aside for 10 minutes to allow the meat to rest. Whilst you’re waiting for the meat, place the tomato, cucumber, onion, chilli, mint, coriander, basil, peanuts and lime leaves in a large bowl. Once the steak is ready, thinly slice it across the grain before adding it to the salad. To finish, drizzle it with the remaining dressing and gently toss to combine. Divide salad among bowls and serve immediately.

excellent cling and offered an engaging juiciness. Trust me, just get it. Looking at the mains, I felt like I was in an episode of Matador: each dish was very old-fashioned and not to mention hearty. But do yourselves a favour and order the Venison with truffle sauce − it was fantastic. Cooked just right, it didn’t have that gamey taste that you sometimes find. It came served with walnuts, cowberries, and butter-roasted potatoes. Or if you’re keen to stay with the seafood theme, you could always try the Dover sole. It had a very delicate

There are those times in life when it’s nice to be taken back an era … or three. To experience food cooked from original recipes and to watch waitresses using white cloth napkins from an antique sideboard while dressed in oldfashioned serving uniforms. Peder Oxe is a great example of a restaurant from another time period. While this Nordic and French-inspired restaurant opened in December 1975, it really does feel like it’s been there for centuries. And therein lies the charm. One of the quirkiest characteristics of Peder Oxe is its ‘light ordering system’. When you’re ready to order, you simply turn the light on above you and your waitress will be with you. Upon sitting down, our super-friendly waitress was quick to offer us the ‘meals of the day’ and a glass of champagne (there’s no waiting for the good stuff here). The menu – featuring a charming picture of old Copenhagen – is just what you’d expect from a traditional Danish restaurant … albeit with a few surprises. Now because I’ve eaten at rather a few Copenhagen restaurants now, it’s fair to say many offer the stock standard starters. Peder Oxe, however, did surprise me with its authenticity. While the lojrom (caviar) and beef did seem rather enticing as starters, I went for the lobster, while my dining partner was slightly more adventurous and went for the foie gras. Now you have to give this place credit for even serving foie gras. For the lovers of this ‘rich plate symbol’, you’ll be pleased you ordered this dish here (however, if you’re inexperienced with it like I am, I would just take a bite of someone else’s). It was extremely rich and obviously made from a very traditional recipe with a lot of love and care. It’s well worth a try. The lobster was also lovely. Unlike some restaurants, they didn’t try and complicate the dish. It was simply served with saffron, tomato and herb mayonnaise. When it comes to drinks, don’t be scared off by the fact that the wine list looks like a Dan Brown novel. Our hospitable waitress was happy to let us try as many as we pleased before settling on a few. While we did enjoy a 2011 Tourane Sauvignon Blanc and a 2010 Alsace Riesling, it was the red that really stole the show − an 2009 Andeluna Malbec from Mendoza. Rather full bodied, it had an

taste, but together with the sides of peas, grilled lemon and small potatoes, it was an excellent combination. One delightful aspect of Peder Oxe is that it feels like you’re in someone’s dining room, as opposed to a bustling restaurant. While the place was full, it lacked the unsettling air of urgency that you can often feel when dining out. We spent a good five hours there – and that was on a Monday night. And if you’re a dessert kind of person like I am, you’d be advised to save a little space for the sweet treats. The Belgian

chocolate fudge cake is pretty light, but what it lacks in weight it makes up for in taste. I couldn’t decide what to have so I opted to have the dessert tapas that comprised ten sweet bites. The sorbet was outstanding as was the ice-cream. Everyone needs a trip down memory lane once in a while, so why not take one here. Try food as it was once cooked, untainted by modern touches, while enjoying some of friendliest service you’ll ever encounter in Copenhagen.

A gangster script that should’ve stayed untouched ARUN SHARMA

HE BURGEONING Los Angeles of the late 1940s – a time when the city was in post-war f lux, a development spree was well underway, and as a consequence the mostly Jewish East Coast mob (known as the Kosher Nostra) was moving in on southern California – has long been a moth and f lame scenario for setting films relating to organised crime. It is no great surprise then that Gangster Squad, based on real-life New York mobster and former boxer Mickey Cohen, is happy to burn its wings alongside past forays into this genre such as Barry Levinson’s Bugsy (1991), Lee Tamahori’s Mulholland Falls (1996), which focused on the lawless law hired to tackle these largely Jewish newcomers, and LA Confidential (1997). In Bugsy, Cohen was on his way up in the mid-1940s and portrayed by Harvey Keitel, while in LA Confidential, at the height of his inf luence, by Paul Guilfoyle. In this lazy, heavy-handed and concrete-booted rendition, Cohen’s psychopathic nature is unravelled by a slitheringly sadistic Sean Penn, and the film wastes little time in clarifying this, opening with him using a pair of cars to rip a Chicago rival in half in the shadow of the ‘Hollywood’ sign, thus establishing him as a tyrannical force bent on burning down everything around him. His West Coast crime syndicate is based on drugs, prostitution and gambling, and with high-ranking police, judges and politicians

Director Ruben Fleischer has admitted he was nervous about directing Sean Penn, but we can’t understand why

in his pocket, Cohen is essentially above the law. This doesn’t sit too well with Sgt John O’Mara (Josh Brolin), a decorated, fist-f linging Second World War vet willing to go vigilante when the situation demands. Unsurprisingly, demand is swiftly satiated as O’Mara stages a solo assault on a Cohen-run brothel, effectively establishing O’Mara’s act-first, think-later attitude. Unfortunately, this pathos seems to have also infected the filmmakers, resulting in an utterly predictable and tiringly tedious plot and characters as stiff and colourless as their

starched white collars. The film is little more than a weak-wristed remake of Brian De Palma’s The Untouchables, in which Kevin Costner’s Eliot Ness recruits an elite band of misfit cops to break Al Capone’s stranglehold on prohibition-era Chicago. This formula is unashamedly cloned in Gangster Squad, offering a mirror-image set of satellite characters that are so similar to those in The Untouchables that one feels genuinely offended by the lack of effort – from the supportive but fearful wife, the platitudespouting old timer, the geeky, mild-

mannered technical one, and so on. Even the fates of these characters remain unaltered, so it will require little imagination to work out which of them survive and which succumb to the endless and stale series of shootouts that form the backbone of this tepid and listless effort. Furthermore, Gangster Squad doesn’t seem to know what it wants to be when it grows up. On the one hand, it is highly stylised and precise in its aesthetics, but it also possesses allusions to pulp and pastiche. The set decorations are rich and appear well researched, with plenty

of neon lights and wavy haired damsels in blindingly red dresses with lipstick to match. Art-deco is all the rage, shell casings ping off marble f loors during gunfights, and the soundtrack boasts a playlist of suitable period tracks. However, it is simply too bright and shiny to be film noir, and too formulaic and shallow to be taken seriously as a hard-hitting indictment of the times. Untouchable is certainly a fine way of regarding this film, but if you do insist, a barge pole is highly recommended.

These modern westerns – many of which carry a high degree of historical consciousness – breathe new life into a genre that might otherwise be long dead. In particular, don’t miss the 2010 remake of the John Wayne classic

True Grit, or Blackthorn, the unofficial sequel to 1969’s Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Erik Løchen: the Forgotten Norwegian Modernist Løchen’s films are largely unknown outside of Norway, but have recently broken through international barriers and begun showing in France with great success. Cinemateket is now showcasing the Norwegian’s films to a Danish audience – many of them with English subtitles. Check out the 1980 flick Fabel, which rearranges sequential events and escapes the conventional linear narrative to cross the border between reality and fantasy. JESSICA HANLEY

That’s at least what happened in the case of US ‘70s rocker Rodriguez, who was a hero to many during the South African struggle against apartheid. Swedish filmmaker Bendjelloul follows two South African fans as they try to find out what happened to their hero, and the result is as compelling as a real-life detective story. LL

And thank god for that. As we’ve come to expect from the last four films, Part 2’s soap-operaesque script, lacklustre direction and mind-numbing melodrama are the film’s biggest problems. But perhaps the scariest part of all comes with the introduction of some new characters, which leaves the door open for potential spin-offs. Now there’s a scary thought. LR

Frankenweenie may not be as effective as his other films, but Burton the filmmaker is no longer on autopilot – he has been reanimated, he’s alive! MW

Beasts of the Southern Wild (11) Dir: Benh Zeitlin; US drama/ fantasy, 2012, 94 mins; Quvenzhané Wallis, Dwight Henry, Levy Easterly, Lowell Landes Based on the play Juicy and Delicious by Lucy Alibar, this film adaptation is essentially a charming children’s coming-ofage story – a moralistic fairy tale told through magical realism. Protagonist Hushpuppy’s dedication to her father is as heartbreakingly beautiful as young Wallis’s perfectly cast face, but the film’s occasional dabbling in sentimentality, along with an overbearing score and an overreliance on voiceovers prevents the film from achieving the transcendence it aims for. Dir: Christopher McQuarrie; US action/horror, 2012, 130 mins; Tom Cruise, Rosamund Pike, Robert Duvall, Richard Jenkins Cruise is the eponymous antihero here: an enigmatic exmilitary cop bringing criminals to justice. While he may not have the blonde locks or towering height, the pint-size patron saint of Scientology is strong here, and the embellished script allows space for the supporting cast to shine. A scattering of good moments, however, can’t stop Jack Reacher from overstaying its running time – the film takes itself far too seriously to be mindless entertainment. LR

Dir: Peter Jackson; US/New Zealand Adventure/Fantasy, 2012, 169 mins; Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, Richard Armitage, Hugo Weaving The grandiloquence of the film will please the fanatics, but leave those on the fence potentially nauseous. Although some of the performances impress, the storyline is flabby, and the writers struggle to hatch a consistently entertaining story to meet the film’s excessive length. LR

Life of Pi (11) Dir: Ang Lee; US Adventure/ drama, 2012, 130 mins; Suraj Sharma, Irrfan Khan, Gerard Depardieu, Rafe Spall, Tabu This beautiful adventure movie is an absolute must-see, even if the plot stinks. It’s a bottomless box of visual delights: colours have never been so vivid. But although writer David Magee does his best to cloak a very corny plot, elements of the baggy original novel still creep in. Despite the narrative compromise, the film is a much-needed bit of heart-warming magic during the frosty season. LR

Argo (15) Dir: Ben Affleck; US thriller, 2012, 120 mins; Ben Affleck, John Goodman, Bryan Cranston, Alan Arkin, Clea Duvall, Tate Donovan, Victor Garber While Affleck has gone to some lengths to deliver a restrained and tasteful film, the script itself is determined to show off, with the climax taking every opportunity to ratchet up the drama quite shamelessly. It might make for highly entertaining cinema, but falls short in convincing us of the narrative’s authenticity. For a film about disguise, this film masquerades as one belonging to the dangerous fringes of political filmmaking, but reveals itself to be quite mainstream and, like Affleck himself, a little more ordinary than it really should be. THE BOTTOM line is that you’re not interesting enough − even as the inspiration for a fictional character. All people want these days is reality TV featuring celebs or, even better, dramedies starring celebs as themselves that show they’re just like you and me. Only they’re not, they’re celebs. Louie, in the same vein as the brilliant Curb your Enthusiasm and less good CYE rip-offs, follows the exploits of a New York-based stand-up comedian with Catholic, sexual and divorce hang-ups. The cameos include Matthew Broderick, David Lynch, Chris Rock, Jerry Seinfeld, Susan Sarandon and Robin Williams, but Ricky Gervais is not among them – he has a regular role as Louie’s doctor. And it’s supposed to be really good, so

set your video to record season one (70 on Metacritic) and two (90 – season three scored 94). And while you’re at it, start recording at 07:45 and you’ll nab the 2011 episode of Saturday Night Live presented by Boardwalk Empire’s Steve Buscemi. Two more Louis cameos, Sarah Silverman and Paul Rudd, were among the comedians appearing in the Secret Policeman’s Ball 2012, a Amnesty International benefit gig that started in the 1980s and was last year held in the US for the first time ever. The line-up includes Jon Stewart, Russell Brand, Eddie Izzard, Ben Stiller and Jimmy Carr. Elsewhere, don’t miss the third season of Bored to Death, fourth season of Masterchef USA (TV3, Fri 19:00) and fifth season of Merlin (SV2, Sat 18:15);

India’s Trafficked Girls (BBC World, Sun) investigates the rise in the country’s abortion rate of female foetuses; A tale of two cities (DRK, Thu 20:00) reveals how modern London rose even stronger from the ashes of the Great Fire; you might imagine Hollywood Chinese (DRK, Sat TV2 Zulu, Sun 09:30 Louie − seasons 1 and 2 22:00) will be a sarcastic look at how US films portray the Chinese, but it isn’t and instead is an earnest history that is captivating and informative; and Scottsboro: An American Tragedy (DRK, Tue 17:00) a disturbing case in 1931 in which two white women vengefully and falsely accused nine black teenagers of raping them − five of whom remained in prison until the mid-1940s.
