HAS A PERFORMANCE with a more timely name ever appeared in this city before? The Conspiracy of Spring (see G2 for details of this martials arts-inspired performance dance piece) … cue Al Pacino in The Godfather III: “Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!” But in all honesty, it’s not like this hasn’t happened before. If you thought your positive thinking mumbo-jumbo, daffodil party and putting your winter coat in storage was going to drive away the nasty winter, then you were wrong … again. It happens every year. In this very column in mid-April 2012, not March, I had to address this very subject. I will repeat: “Denmark is a country of just two seasons: winter and summer.” Spring does not exist, and you’ll know when summer’s here, as you’ll have a violent allergic reaction to birch pollen. Worst of all are my writers: maniacs the lot of them. You could assign them a piece on an indoor sport and they’ll still find a way of putting
‘spring’ in the first sentence. They write the copy on a rare pleasant day, but by the time the issue hits the streets, it’s snowing again. So I’m not buying any spring conspiracy, although there must be more than meets the eye regarding DMI’s uncanny inability to predict the weather. It’s spooky, like their ineptitude is actually part of a plot to shoot the president. No, a more pressing conspiracy came to mind when I saw the subject of this week’s Select Shopping: pastries (G9). It reminded me how I had moved here in 2003 and excitedly expected there to be pecan and maple Danish pastries in every cake shop. There weren’t. But fastforward ten years, and they’re everywhere, sometimes doused in chocolate. So what happened there, then? It’s like JFK all over again, but with pastries not patsies. My point is that the suppliers make some really strange decisions about what consumers like. I could reel off a list, but I’ll just name two: Ritter Sport chocolate bars and Lays cheese and onion crisps. The former discontinue their most popular bars, while the latter is rarely available at the supermarket − in both cases, I’ve seen how quickly they sell out compared to the ones Mormor’s liked since she was a girl. But in the end, like spring, you just have to accept it and move on.

Dansehallerne, Pasteursvej 20, Cph V; starts Sat, ends April 4, performances at 20:00 on Sat & Mon-April 4, 12:00 on April 3-4; tickets 75-145kr, www.teaterbillet.dk; www.dansehallerne.dk, www. mute-comp.dk DANSEHALLERNE, a converted warehouse in the middle of the ever-developing Carlsberg complex, is rapidly becoming the centre of modern contemporary dance for northern Europe. With groundbreaking dance companies like Mute Comp Physical Theatre in the building, it is not hard to understand why. Now in its 14th year of existence, Mute Comp Physical Theatre is known for mixing styles, tackling issues and taking risks. Meeting the co-founders of the company, Jacob Stage and Kasper Ravnhøj, you are immediately struck by their infectious enthusiasm and eagerness to juggle ideas. One such idea sprang from watching a young guy “performing insane martial arts flips” on a Hong Kong beach, and has finally come to life in the shape of Conspiracy of Spring. Set to an otherworldly live soundtrack specially composed by multi-instrumentalist Henriette Groth, the performance promises to be a gravity-defying affirmation of life. Ravnhøj, the choreographer of the piece, admits that the title is deliberately ambiguous. Although spring returns faithfully each year, we are never the same, but still we “want to relive the great moment again and again”. The performance embraces themes of repetition, looking for the perfect jump and striving for beautiful moments. Ravnhøj sees the performance as being “a tribute to all the things I love”. Stage adds that is also a “tribute to the capabilities of the human body”. This is the first time that Ravnhøj will not be on stage in one of his performances, something that he clearly finds challenging, but he solemnly promises that the dancers will not “for the next hour, die, get tired or old”. Ravnhøj’s eyes light up and, perhaps afraid of missing out on life, he rushes back to the dance studio to put the four dancers through their paces. Meeting the dancers themselves proves to be an equally inspiring experience. Ravnhøj has deliberately assembled a curious yet intoxicating cocktail of dancers to interpret the ideas behind the performance. “A troupe of fighters”, as Stage describes them: not only fighting gravity, but quite literally fighting each other on stage – for the show features two of the best stuntmen around. It was love at first sight for an astounded Ravnhøj as he watched Andi Long on that

Based on Aldous Huxley’s novel, Penderecki swaps communism fervour for 17th century religious fanaticism, telling the story of a priest accused of violating several nuns. Arranged by the KGL’s former artistic director Keith Warner, it is a sinister, unforgettable opera. BH

beach in Hong Kong. Long is a permanent member of the Jackie Chan stunt team and has been flying between Copenhagen and Malaysia to fit in his various commitments. A fellow Berlin stuntman and martial arts tricker, Hannes Pastor, came along for the ride. Martial arts tricking has become popular in recent years, and Pastor describes this as “combinations of flips, twists and kicks”. Putting these elements on the modern dance stage promises to be a breathtakingly unique experience. The meeting between martial arts and modern dance is a fascinating one – Long says that watching the flowing graceful moves of the dancers makes him feel that he is “disturbing them”, while co-performer, ballet-trained Stina Malmgreen, is equally in awe of the two stuntmen’s acrobatics. The effervescent Malmgreen has reached the stage in her career where she refuses to allow her passion for dance to be compromised or eroded. There simply has to be “something unique to bring to an audience”. The collaborative nature of Mute Comp Physical theatre suits her perfectly, contributing to the evolution of her own character while also asking “Why am I doing this?” − a question to which she demands an answer. These are instincts that perfectly intertwine with the sense of urgency embedded in Conspiracy of Spring. Perhaps the philosopher of the troupe, Raphaël Ferdinand Eder Kastling started ballet dancing as a child, but has found his style and passion in street dance. Contemplating

the title of the performance, he says: “If I let go of the passion, I don’t know when summer will come.” For Kastling, Conspiracy of Spring is about continual rebirth and rediscovery, putting his body in difficult positions, and an awareness that he is working against time. For all four performers, the insecurity of freelance life inevitably propels them forward into new and unknown territory. Pastor says that the last three years have undeniably been hard years, but would he do it again? Absolutely! Life is too short for regrets and he is doing what he loves. He suddenly turns the tables and asks if I recognise this feeling – here, I realise that while we all have passions in life, few of us are fortunate enough to have the driving passions of the six people I have met. I avoid answering. A couple of hours in the company of Ravnhøj, Stage and the four dancers leave you humbled, inspired, just a little dizzy and looking forward to seeing something special. “Rage, rage against the dying of the light” – these are the immortal words of Welsh poet Dylan Thomas, words which hit a raw nerve in Ravnshøj. Conspiracy of Spring promises to be a performance where the almost inconceivable blend of dancers rage against death and push themselves to the outer limits of movement in an effort to rebel against both gravity and time. It’s a performance where choreography stares defiantly into the eyes of the grim reaper.
Krudttønden, Serridslevvej 2, Cph Ø; ends Sat, performances Mon-Fri 20:00, Sat 17:00; www.that-theatre.com How did Shakespeare come to write his ‘last play’, The Two Noble Kinsmen. This is the mystery Barry McKenna and Ian Burns clarify in Shakespeare’s Women. Set in 1613, days after the fire that destroyed the Globe Theatre. Shakespeare is adapting Chaucer’s The Knight’s Tale, turning to his previous female creations for inspiration, but he is burnt out. “Records of Shakespeare’s life are hard to come by and we thought it would be fun to try and put ourselves in his shoes,” writes Burns, who himself will be playing Shakespeare. The production plays on memory and imagination as the Bard is haunted by visions of his most popular female characters. AA

He wrote that “the essence of youthful spontaneity” is inscribed into the dances of August Bournonville – the 19th century ballet master who invented the style in which Danish Royal dancers still train today. The company is now about to premiere a full-length narrative ballet for which expertise in youthful spontaneity is in order: John Neumeier’s Romeo and Juliet. The ballet is based on Shakespeare’s tale about Romeo and Juliet’s short and doomed love. Like the play, it depicts four deliriously eventful days in Verona that begin with the teenage kids of the Capulets and Montagues falling in love at a ball. Hatred,

romance and revenge follow, before the young lovers’ deaths bring a dramatic end to their bliss. Countless choreographies have been created for Shakespeare’s tragedy − and most of them use Sergei Prokoviev’s score from 1938, which includes the magnificent ‘Dance of the Knights’. Neumeier’s interpretation of Romeo and Juliet was first performed in Copenhagen in 1974. His interest isn’t in showing off the dancers’ virtuosity for its own sake. As was the case with The Lady of the Camellias, which the Royal Danish Ballet danced last spring, he instead uses movement as a means of characterisation. The lovers appear as imperfect teenagers, and not the obligatory graceful royals – or otherworldly creatures – that we tend to encounter on ballet stages. The choreography introduces Juliet as a naïve girl who gradually gains agency as the ballet unfolds. She grows up in the face of the conflict between loyalty to her family and her newfound love. Romeo enters the scene with steps that suggest his confidence, but is gradually disarmed by his love for Juliet. The pas de deux between the two lovers develops from delicate to passionate. actors who can carry the parts is a challenge. And yet, nothing is as unconvincing as Romeo and Juliet as a middle-aged couple. This is less of an issue in ballet, where dancers typically keep a youthful appearance until their careers end in their 30s. Still,
not every distinguished dancer makes a good Romeo or Juliet. In the upcoming production, two ballerinas with outstanding charm and acting-talent share the part of Juliet: principal Susanne Grinder and corps de ballet member Ida Praeto-
rius. Grinder recently dazzled audiences with her lead performances in The Nutcracker, A Folk’s Tale and Neumeier’s Lady of the Camellias. And Praetorius, who left the Royal Danish Ballet School only some years ago, has since excelled as the

More unchristian parody than unchained melody they have since gathered a masAmager Bio, Øresundsvej 6, sive cult appreciation for their Cph S sound as well as their stage presTue 20:00 ence. No show is without smoke Tickets: 242kr, machines and mystery. www.billetnet.dk Their sound is hauntingly spiritual with a dark metal twist. Take, for example, the group’s omething wicked cover of The Beatles classic ‘Here this way comes, and its Comes the Sun’. The original evokes hope and happiness, but name is Ghost BC. Appropriately named, Ghost BC have converted it into the group creates music that is something melancholic and bias creepy as it is haunting. Hail- zarre. The juxtaposed lyrics and ing from Sweden, Ghost made thick guitar and drums create waves as a heavy metal band an almost uncomfortable sound when they formed in 2008, and that you don’t know what to do
Ghost BC
S
with. It’s jarring, but you can’t help being intrigued. And Ghost BC do their best to stay intriguing. Most notably, the group don full robes and hoods to prevent anyone from knowing their real identity. Five of the six members wear dark, obscuring robes, while the lead vocalist comes on-stage with a skull painted on his face, in a cardinal’s hat and dress. Rumours abound about the members of Ghost BC. The real names of the members are completely unknown, but the five instrumentalists in black go by the
collective ‘Nameless Ghouls’, and the frontman is known by the pseudonym ‘Papa Emeritus II’, formerly known as simply ‘Papa Emeritus’. If you hadn’t deduced it thus far, Ghost BC’s music is highly religious in its content. Their first album, released in 2010, is namedOpus Eponymous, and the opening track is ‘Deus Culpa’, Latin for ‘God’s fault’. The obvious reference to the papacy in the lead vocalist’s moniker is on the verge of being ridiculous. In the recent Vatican elections, the group took their re-
ligiosity and turned it into a gimmick for their fans. Urging them to “vote Papa Emeritus for pope” online, the band promised a stream of a new song off their soon-to-be-released albumInfestissumam (which means ‘hostile’ in Latin) in return. The group have yet another bonus for fans: Dave Grohl, of Foo Fighters and Nirvana fame, has teamed up with Ghost BC, and together they covered one of ABBA’s creepier and more dramatic tracks, ‘I’m a Marionette’. The effect is wholly unexpected in just how well the sound
meshes. It’s darker and edgier, and Grohl’s drum skills take the song to the next level. While they’ve been − predictably − compared to the likes of Black Sabbath and Blue Öyster Cult, Ghost BC bring a sound wholly their own. They may be all about the doom and gloom, but don’t be misled into thinking they are just another metal band to come out of Sweden. They’re sure to put you in a ghostly trance at Amager Bio. Adam Green + Binki Shapiro
Loppen, Sydområdet 4B, Cph K; 21:00; 130kr While The Strokes were making waves on the New York indie scene, Green was the go-between – and actually one of Pete Doherty’s collaborators in the good old days – weaving playfully poetic lyrics about rabbits, cigarette burns and Jessica Simpson. As a literary maverick on the US folk scene, Green continues to build on his enigmatic, eccentric and trippy image, and his exciting new work with the creative mind of the Brazilian-accented Binki Shapiro adds a whole new facet to his patently quirky style. If you haven’t come across Green before, then you have a few exciting hours of listening ahead of you.
Fallulah
Store Vega; 20:00; 200kr Marie Apetri (aka Fallulah) remains one of Denmark’s most hopeful folk-pop acts – she is pretty much Denmark’s answer to Britain’s KT Tunstall. Having carved a music career in Copenhagen after a long stay in New York, Fallulah parted the waves with her evocative, upbeat and charismatic debut album, The Black Cat Neighbourhood (2010). Sadly though, you can’t help think that this will prove to be F’s defining moment and that her future material will merely revive the vigour out of her debut album.

Emergenza Festival Semi-Final
Pumpehuset, Studiestræde 52, Cph V; 21:00; 200kr The heavily political New York rap duo, consisting of Stic.man and M-1, will be making their debut in Denmark this Friday. Hailed as rap revolutionaries and perhaps best known for their massively popular single ‘Hip Hop’, they are equally respected for their beat-heavy electronic mixes and provocative lyrics. A staple ingredient of contemporary American hip-hop, the pair have released several well-received EPs and LPs and are now spreading their tunes across the European continent with a set of live shows to support their latest record, Information Age (2012).
Lille Vega; 19:30; 110kr Tonight is the fourth heat of the semi-final of this year’s Emergenza Festival, Europe’s biggest music competition, which takes place in a total of 150 cities in Europe, Japan, Australia and the US. Tonight a total of eight Danish bands will perform 30-minute slots, with each band promissing to be more entertaining than the next: from jamming Station to Mojave Desert Rebels. Following the outcome this round, a winner will be decided at the Danish final at Store Vega in May, who will then go on to represent Denmark at the Nordic finals and hopefully at the international final later this year.
Whether sitting or standing, Steven’s sounds exceed expectations Steven Wilson
HHHHHH
March 19 Store Vega
O
n Tuesday night, Steven Wilson delivered a seamless performance of experimental progressive rock to a mesmerised seated audience. As the founder of the late ‘80s band Porcupine Tree, Wilson is a seasoned performer and a perfectionist at large. Initially, much of the audience was clearly sceptical, regarding whether a seated concert really fits rock music of Wilson’s calibre. But despite the small urges and twitches to stand up, experiencing his music in a seated manner only enriched it. With an extended speaker system and a few elite musicians, the sound was rich, deep and dynamic, treating the audience to well over two hours of Wilson’s highly orchestrated compositions. The crowd fell in love.
Vega reminded ticketholders to turn up early in order to catch a preliminary 30-minute film preceding the concert. Upon arrival, I was surprised to see that this film was merely a moving visual of a large moon that morphed itself into different shades and faces. Obviously a reference to Wilson’s newly released album, The Raven That Refused to Sing, the music intensified, culminating with the band’s eventual appearance on stage. Now it was time for the real deal. Wilson opened with ‘Luminol’, a funky and bass-driven composition showcasing some virtuoso skill by bassist and backup vocalist Nick Beggs. Following ‘Luminol’, Wilson introduced himself to the crowd. In a cool, self-assured manner, he spoke to the audience, who were hypnotised into silence during the show. I have never witnessed Store Vega so quiet: one could hear the heavy footsteps of the security guard. After promising to deliver his latest album in its entirety plus a couple of earlier
masterpieces, Wilson proceeded with the crowd-pleaser ‘Drive Home’, a beautiful song that culminated in an impressive guitar solo from Guthrie Govan. Wilson has an astounding ability to combine moments of minimalist silence with dramatic rock music and unusual timesignatures, and this experimental edge makes his music more like movements, rather than songs. After a solid performance of the hard-hitting ‘The Holy Drinker’, Wilson performed the night’s shortest contribution, in the form of ‘The Pin Drop’ – a melodious pop song (according to Wilson, at least). Introducing ‘The Watchmaker’, a transparent white curtain fell in front of the stage, offering a nightmarish and arguably creepy prelude to the song. ‘The Watchmaker’ was one of the highlights of the evening, a prime example of Wilson’s ability to tell stories through lyrics and instrumentation. Concluding the first set was the record’s the title track, ‘The Raven that

Store Vega; 21:00; 195kr KATO started out as a musician at the age of 12, equipped with his mobile disco and a turntable in his hometown of Thisted in northern Jutland. Tonight he will be celebrating his breakthrough into the big-time with a solo concert at Copenhagen’s Store Vega. Playing a combination of special remixes, collaborations – including the single ‘Alive’ with the much-hyped electro outfit, Electric Lady Lab – and dancefloor anthems created in his studio set-up in Aarhus, KATO is one to keep an eye on for this year’s festival season and is worth investing your energy in this weekend.

Refused to Sing’. Preceded by the evening’s longest song, ‘Raider 2’, I lost track of how long this song ran – a sign of a great composition. As Wilson was applauded back for an encore, old-timers were treated to ‘Radioactive Toy’, a classic from Porcupine Tree. Wilson is severely confident in his music, and with good reason. The audience was also treated to an array of instruments, including clarinet, saxophone, mellotron, Chapman Stick, and flute, all of them played brilliantly. This performance was one to remember. MUSEUMS CORNER BY LIV ELBIRK, KULTURKLIK
New museum district celebrates with a wave of flowers SPRING is here (well, it was a week ago), and all around the city centre, museums are getting ready to celebrate the season as well as the inauguration of a new museum district: Parkmuseerne. The collaboration is founded by six museums known for their outstanding collections of art and natural heritage. Situated in the city’s green haven, Parkmuseerne offers joint events and exhibitions that link together architecture, museums and parks. The first joint exhibition will be launched in mid-March under the theme of flowers – a motif that will be explored in a variety of artistic expressions, from flower patterns in Islamic Art to hand-coloured copper plates. Plant Motifs in the Art of Islam David Collection, Kronprinsessegade 30-32, Cph K; starts March 22, ends Oct 27, open 13:00-17:00 Plant motifs in the form of vines, leaves, flowers, fruits and trees are among those most frequently used in Islamic art. They can be readily recognisable, but also stylised or denaturalised, like the fantastic arabesque ones. The special exhibition Flora Islamica illustrates and analyses the overwhelming visual influence that plant motifs have had in the Islamic world. You will experience the many exotic depictions of plants and flowers as seen through the eyes of Muslim artists.

Flora Danica Geological Museum, Natural History Museum of Denmark, Øster Voldgade 5-7, Cph K; starts March 20, open 10:00-16:00 It began with cloudberries. Since then, thousands of flowers, algae and fungi have been designed and printed in a magnificent book about Denmark’s wild plants: ‘Flora Danica’. The exhibition Flora Danica shows a variety of original, hand-coloured copper prints side by side with contemporary Danish artists’ interpretations of ‘Flora Danica’. Art and science meet in an exhibition, which includes the works of Tal R, Marianne Grønnow, John Kørner and Peter Holst Henckel. Flora Danica was 123 years in the making and paid for by King Frederik V. The purpose was to gather knowledge about the Danish kingdom of wild flora to explore what it could be used for – from textiles to colour production.

The exhibition offers a sensuous walk through a rich variety of flower paintings spanning two centuries, but it also digs deeper to show that a flower is not simply a flower. The artists’ representations of flowers, fruit and plants are affected by history and the prevalent world view. A picture of a flower is a picture of its own time.

But there’s no denying that the cars are the star act. Prepare to be mesmerised by the novelty of the vehicles being exhibited, which this year include the official launch of the Tesla brand on the Danish market, ZOE, which is Renault’s first electric-only vehicle, IS 300h, which is the new Lexus hybrid, McLaren’s 12C Spider, Lamborghini’s new Gallardo, and the $800,000 Aventador Roadster. Aston Martin Vanquish 2013 Hall E As one of Aston Martin’s most iconic models, the new Vanquish has the right proportions of luxury and muscularity. With the perfect combination of avant-garde design and modern technology, this car is a worthy successor to the first generation model introduced more than a decade ago (as seen in the 2002 Bond film ‘Die Another Day’). Relying on a rejuvenated six-litre V12 engine, it’s in a class of its own.
Castle Easter NEW Egg Hunt Ruins under Christiansborg Castle, Christiansborg Slot, Prins Jørgens Gård 1, Cph K; starts Sat, ends April 1, open daily 10:00-17:00; tickets: Children 20kr, Adults 40kr; www.christiansborg.dk Go on an Easter egg hunt among the mystical ruins under Christiansborg Castle! AW Easter Lego Workshop: NEW Bridge Spectacle Danish Architecture Centre, Strandgade 27B, Cph K; starts Sat, ends April 1, open daily 10:00-17:00; tickets 60kr This Easter, learn about bridges and their uses! During the workshop, children will be challenged to build an imaginative bridge out of LEGO bricks. Become inspired by Copenhagen’s bridges and redesign them to create a safer cycling city. AW Dinosaurs: Follow the Trail Experimentarium, Tuborg Havnevej 7, Hellerup; ends Sep 1, open Mon-Fri 09:30-17:00, Thu 09:30-21:00, weekends 11:00-17:00 Go exploring in an 800 sqm dinosaur universe. Encounter more than ten dinosaurs and a host of skeletons and bones and experience their life up close! AW
Among the cars in the show will be Denmark’s Zenvo ST1 − would have been rude not to ask
Jaguar F-Type Hall E There is nothing more thrilling than seeing a heavyweight company, which just yesterday was on the brink of bankruptcy, come out today with a completely new breathtaking model. When that company is one of Britain’s most emblematic luxury car producers, things get all the more interesting, and in the case of its new F-Type, we are talking about a whole new line of models that never existed before. Its competitors, smaller luxury roadsters such as Mercedes SLK or Porsche Boxster, are going to have a hard time keeping up with this new cat. Porsche Cayman Hall E Talking of Porsches, the new Cayman will be present as well. The often criticised midengine coupé is maturing, and as it does so, its design takes it further away from its open-top counterpart, the Boxster. Take a look at a car that some magazines have deemed a better drive than a 911, which is slowly starting to affirm its own identity.
Explore the Solar System Tycho Brahe Planetarium, Gammel Kongevej 10, Cph V; daily until Sun; tickets: 144kr, children 94kr The Wildest Weather in Our Solar System is a new 3D film that takes audiences on a journey through time and space to explore the unknown. The journey will feature storms as devastating as 100 megatonne hydrogen bombs, and 400-year-old hurricane and dust storms that can enclose the entire planet! So, strap on your astronaut helmets and take off in flight through thick atmospheres and magnetic storms; after this film, you’ll be glad that you live on planet Earth! AW Waking the T-Rex 3D Tycho Brahe Planetarium, Gammel Kongevej 10, Cph V; ends Sun; www.planetariet. dk This exciting film follows the life of T-Rex Sue, the largest and most complete T-Rex ever found. AW Traversing the rock igloo Stuehøj, Ahornvej 10, Ølstykke; www.ølstykke-stenløse.com A 45-minute train ride away from Copenhagen, you’ll find Stuehøj, a 5,500-year-old ‘rock igloo’ passage grave topped with turf. Get off at Ølstykke S-train station, just before Frederikssund. Mind your heads! And take a torch (it’s dark) and some charcoal for the barbecue by the playground. HD
Supercar DNA Hall C4; Thu & Fri 17:00, Sat & Sun 11:00 & 15:00 Denmark’s most influential car magazine, ‘Bil magasinet’, has put together a feast for the senses of supercar lovers: a half-hour show taking viewers through a 30-year history of some of the most beloved supercars of all time. With editor Mikkel Thomsager as the presenter, you will be able to hear (provided you understand Danish) short descriptions of eight of the most important supercars of the past 30 years as they pass beneath you. The good part is that the driving around will allow even people with no knowledge of Danish to understand the most important part of the presentation: the roaring sounds that the cars make. Ferrari’s F40, once the fastest production car in the world, Honda’s NSX, Japan’s first supercar, GM’s Viper, the American supercar powered by a V10 truck engine, and Denmark’s very own Zenvo ST1 are some of the highlights of the show.
Spiders Exhibition Zoological Museum, University Park 15; every day except Mon until 4 Aug, 10:00-17:00; www.zoologi.snm.ku.dk Eight eyes, venomous glands and a bad reputation. Spiders send shivers down many people’s spines, but they also live fascinating lives. The Natural History Museum’s new exhibition Spiders, appearing at the Zoological Museum, looks past the creepy surface and invites the public to a view the spider’s story as one of beautiful interplays between natural history and art. BHN Okker Gokker Det Lille Teater, Lavendelstræde 5-7, Cph K; ends May 5, performances Tue-Sun − times vary; adult tickets: 120kr, concessions: 60kr, under-25s: 50kr, www.detlilleteater.dk; suitable for 2–4 years This musical play is full of old Danish rhymes, limericks and songs with plenty of visual aids to help captivate the audience, young and old alike. GROWING up and going to Japanese restaurants with my parents, I loved eating tempura. As I’ve grown older, I’ve moved onto other Japanese foods, but there will always be a place in my heart filled with nostalgia and tempura. Tempura is, admittedly, a bit tricky to execute. The most common complaint is that it comes out soggy. In order to avoid sogginess, I have a few tips for preparing tempura so it’s crisp and crunchy. It’s important to use the freshest ingredients. After washing the vegetables, dry them completely. I use paper towels to pat dry both the veggies and the shrimp. Make sure your batter is
as cold as possible; if you’re frying for more than half an hour, add a few ice cubes. Do not overcrowd the oil; only cook three or four items at a time. If you put too much in, the temperature of the oil will lower and you will end up with dreaded soggy tempura. Once it’s in the oil, leave it alone or the temperature will yet again be lowered (maybe turn it over once). Proper drainage is key as well. Expect to go through a lot of paper towels. Ideally, it should be served in small portions, although this recipe serves four appetisers or two mains. The vegetables below are only suggestions; feel free to change it up.

Hero Kitchen Jarmersplads 3, Cph V; open: Tue-Thu 17:00-23:00, Fri-Sat 17:00-02:00 (kitchen closes 22:00); 6969 6000; price range: 40-125kr; www.herokitchen.dk Hero, located on the ground floor of the Fox Hotel, which opened in June of this year, captures the authenticity and atmosphere of a Japanese street kitchen (izakaya). So much more than another stock standard Copenhagen sushi place, it offers a delicious range of snacks, salads, small dishes, sushi, meats from the grill, Yakitori (skewered meats), tempura, sashimi, and, of course, a range of sweets. Its Scallop Katafi is the best in the city, while the Yakitori left us speechless – it was divine. Reasonably priced, impeccably chic and unbelievably tasty, this is the place to go if you want to be a hero amongst the trendsetters. JOS
Restaurant Kiin Kiin Guldbergsgade 21, Cph N; 3535 7535; open Mon-Sat 17:30-21:00; four-course menu 450kr, seven-course 775kr (with wine menu 1450kr); www.kiin.dk There are only two Thai restaurants in the whole world that have been awarded a Michelin star. One of them is in London, the other one is Kiin Kiin, which you’ll find in the heart of Nørrebro. And it’s well deserved. Kiin Kiin isn’t just a restaurant, it’s an experience, a place where every little detail is thought through. PDR Reinwald’s Farvergade 15, 1463 Cph K; open Mon-Sat 14:00-24:00 (kitchen closes at 22:00); 3391 8289; fivecourse menu with wine 850kr, other dishes 75-215kr; www. reinwalds.dk Serving lunch and dinner, a director’s script-length of choices confronts you at Reinwald’s. It’s a who’s who of classic French and Frenchinspired Danish dishes as well as a monthly set menu. Any chef would be proud of this. SC 1.th Herluf Gade 9, Cph K; 3393 5770, 1th@1th.dk; 1,250kr per person; www.1th.dk 1.th is a gourmet restaurant with a twist. Tucked away behind a hard-to-find door on the first floor to the right of a typical Copenhagen apartment, the restaurant is based around the concept of the dinner party with guests stepping into what appears to be a private apartment and then being utterly spoilt by their hosts. The monthly set menu costs 1,250kr and has a whopping ten courses, and you can tell them in advance of any food quirks you might have and they will personalise the menu for you. Terrific food, friendly and attentive service and a unique setting. CS

a bowl. Add egg and sparkling water, stir until just combined (don’t overmix, it doesn’t have to be smooth). Pour oil into a large saucepan or wok, until it is one-third full. Heat over medium heat until a small piece of bread sizzles when dropped into oil. Dip vegetables one at a time into batter, allowing excess to drain. Gently lower into hot oil. Cook 3-4 at a time, for 2-3 minutes per batch or until batter is crisp and golden. The shrimp will only take about a minute and a half. Repeat until all of the items are cooked. Eat immediately with sauce. Otherwise, place the tempura into a sieve (above a bowl or drain) with a paper towel lining, to further drain oil. Place on baking sheet and keep warm in the oven, until it is time to serve. Do not stack − place them side by side. For the sauce, in a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, lime juice, and white sugar to use as a dipping sauce.

Like a good Parisian lover, she’ll help you forget all your woes
A bit like that film Midnight in Paris, it will whisk you off to the French capital to an era when mojitos were popular
Our meal is served quickly, and we both bask in the aromas coming from our dishes. I take a bite of my friend’s lamb, and the meat is cooked to a perfect tenderness that I’ve rarely tasted. But all thoughts of other dishes are lost when I try my chicken. My knife cuts through the meat like a hot knife through butter. The pairing with the mashed potatoes is perfect, and the mushrooms and onions are fantastic garnishes. I try to pace it, but the flavours are simply too exquisite to merely nibble on.

SUNDAY SSUNDAY U N DAY BRUNCH BBRUNCH RU N C H
IF YOU DUCK down a narrow, quiet side-street off Østerbrogade, you might sometimes surprise yourself with what you’ll discover. The daytime might bring you into a warm boutique owned by a kind-hearted owner, while at night, you might find yourself walking past the subtle and welcoming warmth emanating from the window of Fru Heiberg. At least, that’s what happened to me one freezing February evening. One turn down Rosenvængets Allé almost made the noise from the busy thoroughfare disappear. People were walking about, enjoying the clear night while huddled from the sharp wind, and as my friend and I were just about to have to amputate our fingers from the cold, we popped right through the doors of Fru Heiberg only to be met by the glowing candlelight and genuine ‘hygge’ this place espoused. We sit down at a small table in this tiny one-room restaurant, and I immediately feel transported to Paris. Some tables are repurposed chessboards (with chess pieces set up at one without guests), while the rest are merely small, cosy tables for two or four. The area is not that large, but the room allows for a quiet din without feeling like everybody can overhear your conversation. Our server promptly offers us a glass of sparkling Spanish cava with our menus. The selection is minimal, but everything sounds delectable, and we have trouble deciding what to order. To start, my friend opts for the French onion soup with croutons and Gryère with Ale #16, and I pick the Fish terrine with plum tomatoes, berries and fresh herbs with a 2009 Argentinian Malbec. Both are incredible, and you can taste the authenticity with which our dishes were prepared. The soup oozes classic French dining, and my terrine is wonderfully seasoned and rich. The full flavour of both the ale and the Malbec go well with these small but filling plates. For our main, we again struggle with what to pick. “The Pork with rosemary sounds amazing,” my friend says. “But so does the lamb!” I can’t help but agree – quite the dilemma we face, isn’t it? Embracing my French mood, however, I go for the Coq au vin with mushrooms, onions and bacon served with mashed potatoes, and, ultimately, my friend decides to try the Braised lamb shank with vegetable confit and garlic potatoes.
For the finale, we decide to split the plate of French and Danish cheeses and a Crème brûlée. The desserts come out with a glass of dessert wine, and it is all the perfect punctuation mark for a phenomenal meal. The cheeses taste fresh and are paired with a paté and fresh crispy bread, and the Crème brûlée is a delightful balance of sweetness and creaminess. As we lay our spoons down, we are overcome with a sense of contentment that few meals can deliver.
Some nights simply require a Parisian aesthetic, with intimate tables made for comfortable conversations, cosily dark surroundings and melting candles galore. As evenings begin to thaw and wandering around the streets of Copenhagen sounds less and less like punishment, a long, relaxed dinner full of great food is exactly what the doctor ordered. Fru Heiberg is a true hidden gem for you and your friends to discover. Bon appétit!

A musical melodrama that’s mostly just miserable LUKE RICHARDSON
Les Misérables (11)
Dir: Tom Hooper; US drama/musical, 2012, 158 mins; Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried, Helena Bonham Carter, Sacha Baron Cohen Premiered March 21 Playing nationwide
F
OLLOWING ON from The King’s Speech, director Tom Hooper replaces regal England with 19th-century France in an adaptation of the longest running musical of all time, Les Misérables. After snapping up a few statues at the Academy Awards, however, the two-and-ahalf hours of singing left me emotionally exhausted. While it’s virtually impossible to condense Victor Hugo’s 1,900 page novel into a few hours, Hooper embraces the source material’s ability to move at a more leisurely pace than the hurried stage show. The story spans three decades and depicts a French peasant named Jean Valjean (Jackman), who is serving a 19-year prison sentence for stealing a loaf of bread. After breaking his parole, he spends the next 27 years hunted by resilient prison guard Javert (Crowe), who seeks redemption by being charitable to the down-and-out Parisians he meets along the way, including a factory girl-turned-prostitute, Fantine (Hathaway), and her daughter Cosette (Seyfried). With extensive training in musical theatre and a very burly set of shoulders, Valjean is very much the character Jackman was born to play. He does fantastically here: omnipresent and carrying what is otherwise a tough mainstream sale. The biggest hype surrounding Les Misérables is Hathaway’s performance, and rightfully so. While her screen time amounts to a miniscule 15 minutes, Hathaway is sensational, and her rousing rendition of ‘I Dreamed a Dream’ is
Anne has clearly not taken the news of her Oscar-night wardrobe malfunction very well
a genuine tearjerking moment. Unfortunately, it comes within the first fifth of the film’s running time, and things only go downhill from here. The supporting cast range from the serviceable to the annoying. Bonham Carter and Baron Cohen put in tedious, pantomime-like performances as the corrupt master and mistress of a local watering hole. Elsewhere, young British hopeful Eddie Redmayne pouts throughout as the young, hopeless romantic Marius, whose Muppet-like falsetto is balanced surprisingly well by the cruelly overlooked, formidable presence of newcomer Samantha Barks as unre-
quited lover Éponine. But then there’s Russell Crowe. Oh, Russell. While he looks at home in designer Paco Delgado’s period costume, this Kiwi’s voice is a quivering whimper in comparison to his fellow cast members. Trying so desperately to hit the notes, he forgets to act, wandering across the gaudy set design looking more like Oliver Twist’s beadle Mr Bumble than a fearsome upholder of the law. It’s an appropriate comparison, actually. When battle commences on the streets of Paris, I couldn’t help but be reminded of Charles Dickens’s masterwork. The Twist effect is evident in the
drab cobbled streets, the squalor, prostitution, alcohol swilling, and an annoying little Artful Dodger of sorts who has a remarkable cockney accent for someone so young – and so French. Unlike that childhood favourite, Les Misérables is too depressing and evocatively clawing that it is never an enjoyable viewing experience. Such grandiose ugliness is juxtaposed with Hooper and cinematographer Danny Cohen’s insistence on filming everything in low-angled close up. Effectively, Hooper wants it both ways: to be simultaneously epic and claustrophobic. It works very sparingly
in the smaller, character monologue moments. But more often than not, the one-take, continuously moving handheld camera work is incongruous to the brilliant musical composition, and it could make you feel a little nauseous. Despite its many flaws, Les Misérables is a film that stinks of self-righteousness. It wants to be loved, to be cried over and to be revered as a masterpiece. While Hooper and co give it their best melodic shot, the film is ultimately a gruelling watch. An experiential cinematic endeavour, you’ll come out either singing its praises or running for cover. Either way, it’s pretty miserable stuff.

If DR1 has snubbed your favourite flicks (like Atonement), thankfully Cinemateket hasn’t
OPENHAGEN’S resident arthouse cinema Cinemateket is in April offering an alternative to the standard Hollywood blockbusters on at larger theatres, instead providing a diverse mix of films, many of which are in English or offer English subtitles. Denmark’s major film festival CPH:PIX will be holding many of its screenings at Cinemateket during its 13-day run, while the filmhouse will also host a multitude of themed series and showings between now and the end
of April. This month’s picks include monthly film War Witch, an acclaimed drama about a 14-year-old child soldier, a month-long tribute to littleknown French director Jean Grémillon, and classic horror films from the 1930s through the 50s. Check the website for screening details. TOP PICKS: Audience Requests: What do you do when you’re dying to watch an old favourite, but it’s never shown on TV and that coveted DVD is nowhere to be found? Now you can request screenings of your favourites at Cinemateket, which allows you to tailor-make
your viewing experience. April’s requests include 1975’s Night Moves, Francis Ford Coppola’s Rumble Fish from 1983, and the more recent Atonement and Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. CPH:PIX On April 11, CPH:PIX takes over Copenhagen with an array of films, concerts, director visits and more. Over 150 films will be shown – of which many are at Cinemateket and with English subtitles. Check out Youth, in which two brothers kidnap a girl from rich parents to save their family from financial ruin, or Concussion, about a bourgeois woman who undergoes a radical transformation after an unfortunate head injury.
Danish on a Sunday Cinemateket offers bi-weekly screenings of Danish film classics with English subtitles to introduce newcomers to the best of Scandinavian cinema. This month, don’t miss Nils Malmros’s Barbara (March 24, 14:15), in which a young Danish pastor of the 1760s falls in love with a femme fatale from the Faroe Islands. In April, catch Oscar winner Susanne Bier’s romantic comedy Den skaldede frisør (Love is All You Need, April 7, 14:15), or Det røde kapel (The Red Chapel, April 28, 14:15), a comedic investigation of everyday life under the North Korean regime. 22 - 27 March 2013
New this Week The Croods (7) Dir: Chris Sanders; US animation/adventure, 2013, 98 mins; Nicholas Cage, Ryan Reynolds, Emma Stone, Catherine Keener In a prehistoric era called the Croodacious – when Mother Nature was still experimenting – the world’s first family embarks on the journey of a lifetime after the cave they inhabit is destroyed. While the technical details are impressive, The Croods sacrifices both story and characters, and the script lacks the flavourful wit and plot that make family animation flicks fun for more than just the kids. JH
Book Your Tickets Flight (15) Dir: Robert Zemeckis; US action/drama, 2012, 138 mins; Denzel Washington, Don Cheadle, Kelly Reilly, Bruce Greenwood, John Goodman, Melissa Leo Flight is a fine film that lives and dies by Denzel Washington’s central performance. Like vintage Scorcese, the narrative rockets along, Zemeckis portraying the events with the assuredness of a master, but with a sense of urgency that would befit a director half his age. While there’s a cartoon hyper-reality to the plot that doesn’t ring true, the proceedings are still excruciating and genuinely moving. MW
Django Unchained (15) Dir: Quentin Tarantino; US action/drama/western, 2012, 165 mins; Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kerry Washington, Samuel L Jackson Tarantino’s eagerly anticipated pastiche of the western epic is a bold, throbbing, exuberantly crafted piece of work – one that rattles cages with a vengeance. The film manages to conduct a joyride through old Dixie while simultaneously building up to a passionate climax steeped in heartbreaking romance and pacifistic, moral indignation. And while the Tarantino trademarks are aplenty, the film doesn’t buckle under their weight. KRG
The Impossible (15) Dir: Juan Antonio Bayona; Spa drama/disaster, 2012, 114 mins; Ewan McGregor, Naomi Watts, Tom Holland, Samuel Joslin The Impossible, based on the real-life experiences of a family caught in the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami, rarely lets up the pace. It is sometimes hard to watch as the characters are severely and relentlessly battered by the water and the all-encompassing hopelessness that follows after the wave hits. The work pays off tenfold, resulting in a tough realism that no doubt informs the performances and the emotional clout of the entire film. See this, and then go and hug your kids. MW
Avoid like the Plague Bullet to the Head (15) Dir: Walter Hill; US action, 2012, 92 mins; Sylvester Stallone, Sun Kang, Sarah Shahi, Jason Momoa, Christian Slater In this daftly titled film based on a French graphic novel, Stallone emerges as a throbbing, veiny mass of tattooed muscles – neither pretty, charming nor remotely human. The writers attempt to weave cheeky bromance into Stallone and Kang’s yin-yang alliance, but it never gets very entertaining or believable either. The clichés are offensive, the cartoonish quality annoying and the methods of killing exhausting. Only Stallone and Hill fans ought to bother with this one. KRG
Oz: The Great and Powerful (11) Dir: Sam Raimi; US adventure/fantasy, 2013, 130 mins; James Franco, Michelle Williams, Rachel Weisz, Mila Kunis, Zach Braff Intended as an unofficial prequel to the 1939 classic The Wizard of Oz, this film follows small-time circus magician Oscar (Franco) as he leaves the Kansas dustbowl for glittery Oz. The film is enjoyable to a point, and viewers will enjoy particularly poignant performances from Weisz, Williams and Kunis. However, director Sam Raimi attempts to dress up a dull plot with special effects, and while the result is visually dramatic, the script is dramatically thin. JH
Parker (15) Dir: Taylor Hackford; US action/crime, 2013, 118 mins; Jason Statham, Jennifer Loepz, Nick Nolte, Michael Chiklis, Clifton Collins Jr Parker is the sort of film in which you need to leave any questions of plausibility at the door and just enjoy the gaudy action spectacle. The plot is derivative, and like all good/bad action B-movies, is utter balderdash, slugglishly tumbling through the two-hour running time. What’s more, the ‘stick ‘em up!’ dialogue is cringe-worthy, and the characterisation ignominious. Nevertheless, it’s mindless entertainment that you can’t help but succumb to. LR
A Good Day to Die Hard (15) Dir: John Moore; US action/crime, 2013, 97 mins; Bruce Willis, Jai Courtney, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Sebastian Koch, Cole Hauser Bruce Willis, presumably due to a clause in his contract with the Devil, returns as New York cop John McClane for the fifth time to battle evil terrorists. Coarse and monotonous where its predecessors were clever and complex, it’s no exaggeration to call A Good Day to Die Hard the worst film of the seemingly never-ending series. Perhaps most worrisome of all is the knowledge that the suffering is far from over and the franchise will continue. DS
Also Playing Cloud Atlas (15) Dir: Tom Tykwer, Lana & Andy Wachowski; Ger/US/ Sin/HK drama; 2012, 172 mins; Tom Hanks, Halle berry, Hugh Grant, Hugo Weaving, Susan Sarandon Imagine a three-hour episode of an American soap opera with a 100-million-dollar budget, with each scene taking place in a different time period, and you get a sense of the colossal strangeness that is Cloud Atlas. It’s a deliberately eclectic mix of styles that frequently engage, despite occasionally failing to gel. Dramatically clumsy, aesthetically garish and philosophically daft, it’s whimsical folly on a grand scale: it shouldn’t really work, but it nearly does. MW
The Sessions (3) Dir: Ben Lewin; US drama/ comedy, 2012, 95 mins; John Hawkes, Helen Hunt, William H Macy, Moon Bloodgood Based on the journalistic writings of poet Mark O’Brien (played by Hawkes), The Sessions is a warm and witty account of his attempts to lose his virginity – at the age of 38. Hawkes and Hunt are both well cast and have natural chemistry, and while their therapy sessions are amusing and genuinely moving, the script is slightly less convincing. One might assert that questions of authenticity are irrelevant, however, especially as so much of the film is successfully played for laughs. MW
G19
The Last Stand (15) Dir: Jee-woon Kim; US action/thriller, 2013, 107 mins; Arnold Schwarzenegger, Forest Whitaker, Johnny Knoxville Arnie fans will find The Last Stand entertaining enough – if they keep their expectations low. While fairly clichéd and predictable, the script is surprisingly solid, and the film retains pace with high-powered action and stunts. The efforts at humour miserably fail, however – Arnie delivers the truly amusing moments, and even those are sparse. It’s nevertheless entertaining to see Hollywood trying to hold onto its action heroes as they inevitably get old. LD
Quartet (7) Dir: Dustin Hoffman; US comedy/Drama, 2013, 98 mins; Maggie Smith, Michael Gambon, Billy Connolly, Tom Courtenay At a retirement home for former musicians, an annual concert is disrupted by the arrival of eternal diva Jean (Smith), who also happens to be the ex-wife of one of the residents. While endearing, Hoffman’s directorial debut is far from honest about ageing – all the seniors seem to be in tip-top form, and the film’s plot is almost painfully predictable. But the underlying message of always continuing to learn and grow is a charming one that will leave audiences grinning. JH

Black Mirror – second series SVT1, Sun 23:00
THE FIRST episode of the second series of Black Mirror (SVT1, Sun 23:00), ‘Be Right Back’, is easier to watch than the opener of the first series (talking of which, the film rights to the third episode, ‘The Entire History of You’, have been bought by Robert Downey Jr) in which the PM of Britain has sex with a pig on live TV to save the life of the country’s favourite princess. This dystopian satire, penned by Charlie Brooker, was one of 2011’s most talked about series, so it’s no surprise to see it return, and according to the critics, the first episode, starring Hayley Atwell as a bereaved woman who enlists an IT company to resurrect her dead boyfriend from his cyber footprint, is the best of the three. The program can even mimic his voice – it’s spooky!
“The show touched on important ideas – the false way we sometimes present ourselves online, and our growing addiction to virtual lives – but it was also a touching exploration of grief,” praised the Daily Telegraph. The Guardian liked the premise, but thought the ending was “a flurry of false notes … arrived at with the toss of a coin”. Hopefully, the same won’t be true of miniseries Labyrinth, which like a growing number of films (think The Hours, WE and Julie & Julia), is set in two different time periods – the modern day and 13th century Europe – and details two different quests for the Holy Grail. Based on Kate Mosse’s 2005 bestseller, it stars Jessica Brown Findlay (youngest daughter in Downton Abbey) and Tom Felton (Draco in
the Harry Potter films). But despite being shown in Sweden in January, there’s little critique of it out there. Elsewhere, last week’s pick, Voices of a Generation, catches up with actress-turned-politician Glenda Jackson; James Steele: America’s mystery man in Iraq (SVT2, Sun 22:10) looks at how a retired US SVT1, Sun 23:00 Black Mirror – second series colonel has been training Iraqi police commandos in the art of torture; and given that it is Easter, there are three religious doc series: From Jesus to Christ: The First Christians (DRK, Thu 16:05), which you can watch in its entirety, The History of Christianity (SVT2, Mon-Thu 18:00), of which you can watch the first four of six episodes, and The Bible (SVT1, Thu 22:00), which promises to go on and on.
