ENGLISH-LANGUAGE theatre would appear to be in rude health in Denmark. This coming April will see no less than three productions hit the city’s boards: The Beach (see G3), The City (G2) and the Copenhagen Theatre Circle’s The Importance of Being Earnest, which will run from April 17-27. And only last Saturday, That Theatre Company, the perennial provider of quality theatre in this city since its foundation in the mid-1990s, wrapped up its monthlong run of Shakespeare’s Women. Catching up with Ian Burns, the co-writer and star of the play, on Saturday evening, he was in high spirits following a successful run that had managed to pack them in on every day of the week … bar one. “Ah yes, Idiot Factor,” he murmured. Every year, it comes back to haunt him (talking of which, his autumn production is The Woman in Black), but will he ever learn? The thing about Burns is he is a great believer in the intelligence of the average city-dweller. He credits

them with better taste than watching the umpteenth series of a franchise that is clearly running out of talent. And every year he is proven wrong. It’s a borderline analogy on Christ’s belief in humankind, but hopefully this Easter (see G2 for details of all the fun events going on) won’t see Burns put up on a cross. With no decent hills in the city, he wouldn’t even have a good view. The man behind The Beach, meanwhile, is Russell Collins, who in just five years has together with his wife (who is also appearing – in a rather fetching bikini, it must be said) set up ten children’s drama schools (see www.cphpost.dk for a recent story we wrote about his endeavours). With two young children of their own, it’s a wonder they have time to do anything else, let along put on a play. And then there is The City from Why Not Theatre, a company that in recent years has prospered providing niche theatre. This approach has served them well and earned a lot of recognition in the Danish media – a notoriously difficult chestnut to crack. It’s something Burns has found out, to the cost of empty pairs of seats on opening night, on a number of occasions. But as Englishlanguage theatre continues to blossom, they won’t be able to ignore it forever.

SPRING is here, in theory. Families, barely recovered from the ardours of the action-packed winter holiday in February, now have Easter to contend with. All the usual activities involving chocolate, hunting and painting Easter eggs, yet more chocolate, or cutting out intricate patterns in folded paper to form the annual ‘gækkebrev’. For the uninitiated, this delightful Danish tradition involves sending a decorated letter in the post with a rhyme and your name written in ‘dots’ − Henry would be *****, for example. If the recipient doesn’t guess who you are, they owe you a chocolate egg. If they don’t, the yolk is on you, so to speak. For those of you not intending to stuff yourself silly with sugar-coated treats for a whole week, here are some ideas for various eggs-cursions (sorry – couldn’t resist it!).

That’s the last time we ask Uncle Frank to organise the Easter egg hunt

The Beach is set in a deserted coastal hotel and tells the story of two disillusioned couples on romantic getaways who meet for the first time. Through their interactions they are forced to examine their own loneliness and the humdrum notion of their existence. Despite this painful confrontation, they return year after year, pulled back by the freedom isolation can create. The play is a collaboration with the Nordic Theatre Company and Rear View. The Nordic Theatre Company was formed about ten years ago in London by Anthony and Marie Parker- Shaw, who is a successful Swedish theatre director. Collins was pleased to work with them.

“The company has produced many great plays in the UK over the years and has a great reputation there,” he reveals. “The play will be co-produced with Rear View, which is a new production company that Christina and I have set up here in Denmark.” The Beach was originally written in Danish by Peter Asmussen, famed for writing Lars Von Trier’s Breaking the Waves, but it has been translated by David Duchin and will be performed in English. The working relationship with Asmussen is not new. “Christina translated a play for Peter Asmussen when we lived in London so we knew of his work,” Collins continues. “But it’s a great play that is funny, interesting and tragic all at the same time. I thought it would be a different challenge after my last play, Ghosts. It’s well written and offers a great insight into modern Danish society”. The Beach will be Collins professional directorial debut in Copenhagen: “I directed and produced Ghosts by Henrik Ibsen a couple of years ago back in London, and I have had a few film roles but no theatre here until now.” The couple have built a solid reputation around their performing arts schools, Scene

directing, and although Scene Kunst Skoler brings us great joy and fulfillment, we want to work professionally as well. The plan is to put on plays in both English and Danish and try and make our mark on the theatre scene here in Copenhagen.”

With a cast of only four people, it’s a very small production, meaning there is a lot more work for each individual. “On a big production you pretty much have someone to do everything for you,” says Collins. “Whereas on a smaller pro-

duction, we pretty much do everything ourselves. You also have more creative control, which I think makes it more enjoyable and inspiring.”

Ska-ed by the 1990s? This lot will hook you in

Reel Big Fish

Lille Vega Saturday 21:00 195kr; www.billetnet.dk

T

he ‘90s are iconic. Love them or hate them, but life today wouldn’t be the same without the decade that cloned Dolly, brought kids Tamagotchis, invented the internet, and saw every woman rocking the ‘Rachel’ and every man in flannel and safety-pinned jeans.

Luckily for those with fond memories of the ‘90s, Copenhagen is bringing back one of the biggest names in ska: Reel Big Fish. Remember those guys? They got toes tapping and air drums drumming in the mid’90s with hits like their admonishing but ironically most popular single ‘Sell Out’. The upbeat and positive single ‘Everything Sucks’ defined a generation’s angst and disillusionment, with lyrics that sing “I

know everything sucks, and this is gonna be the last time you hear me complain.” And ‘She Has a Girlfriend Now’ is fairly self-explanatory. Lyrics infused with the banal problems of love lost and wanting to learn to play the guitar to pick up chicks made Reel Big Fish a band that many could relate to. Their brand of ska was something that jived with a lot of people around 1996 and led to a great cult fol-

lowing even after ska became less popular. Following those immortal days, the group decided to switch it up and ditch the trumpets. They put out rock singles like ‘Where Have You Been?’, which fared much better without the use of brass. They went through a period of fractured styles, from lighthearted albums like Cheer Up! to more dark and edgy albums featuring tracks about bitterness, jealousy and

short-lived popularity − a selfaware approach. This past summer, the group released their first album in five years. And for die-hard fans of that quintessential ‘90s sound, Candy Coated Fury is a return to their ska roots. It’s what they do best − pseudomisanthropic lyrics are the icing on a sugar-rush of danceable ska beats and instrumentals. Their songs will have old fans rejoicing and new fans falling for

tracks like ‘PS I Hate You’ and ‘I Know You Too Well to Like You Anymore’. Their names are enough to give concert-goers a sense of Reel Big Fish’s fun mockery of anger. That old-school Reel Big Fish style is back, horns a-blazing, and they’ll get you to smile and dance like it’s 1995 at Lille Vega. Reel in your tickets soon! Amy Strada

The Soft Moon

Loppen, Sydområdet 4B, Cph K; 21:00; 140kr Branded as a ‘neo-post-punk’ band – a label that does little to define their catchy, synth-imbibed, beat-heavy music – this San Francisco quintet offer an altogether upbeat, modern yet harrowing musical articulation of the post-apocalyptic. After rising up through the saturated post-punk scene in San Francisco, The Soft Moon released their self-titled debut record in 2010, a fulfilling and somewhat shadowy foray into the annals of 1980s industrial synth-pop. Check out their most popular track ‘Breathe The Fire’ to get a real sense of what they’re up to.

Dúné

Store Vega; 21:00; 180kr The seven-member Copenhagen-based band offer an experimental style of synth, electro and indie pop that has become phenomenally popular throughout Scandinavia. Best known for their memorable performances, this orchestral-sized group have performed at some of the largest festivals in northern Europe. Only three years ago, the band took Denmark by storm with their second record, Enter Metropolis (2009). Since then, they’ve failed to churn out any winning hits and have practically evaporated into thin air, with only their loyal fans turning up for gigs.

Palma Violets

Jake Bugg

Amager Bio, Øresundsvej 6, Cph S; 20:00; 125kr Once upon a time, the Palma Violets were the darlings of the British rock magazine NME, applauded for making noise in their living room instead of all over the internet. This group made it the old-fashioned way by signing to the East Londonbased indie record label Rough Trade Records several years ago. Pursuing an almost Velvet Underground vision from their studio hideaway in East London, they’ve reimagined a garage rock sound that takes influence from The Black Lips, The Ramones and Nick Cave in a ramshackle, distortion-heavy style.

Store Vega; 21:00; sold out Either Bugg is a genius invention of the music industry, or the work of a modern Frankenstein. With traces of just about every major rock outfit from Bob Dylan and Oasis to The Arctic Monkeys evident in his sound, it’s almost impossible to conceive that some of his material was in the making when he was only 17. Testing the British charts with his seminal single ‘Two Fingers’, Bugg is now making moves in Denmark, where his popularity is already palpable. As luck would have it, tickets have already sold out, but it’s well worth trying your luck on Facebook or online forums.

Lyrics might be lost in translation, but the energy isn’t Von Dü

R

eggae-dancehall band Von Dü frequently boast that they play highenergy shows heavy on audience interaction, claiming that one can’t help but walk away from a concert with the urge to keep talking about it days afterwards. And it was clear that the crowd at Pumpehuset were expecting exactly that: their anticipation was clearly palpable waiting for the band to take the stage. Even as a first-time Von Dü concertgoer, I could feel that the enthusiasm was infectious. When the nine-piece band finally did show up – albeit 90 minutes after the advertised time – the crowd seemed to have barely noticed the delay. A collective cheer rang out from the audience as soon as the group took to the stage, and the craze only amplified when lead vocalist

Morten Nygaard announced that they were celebrating their fifth anniversary with tonight’s concert. Von Dü have become an integral part of the Danish reggae scene in the past five years, due largely to their witty lyrics and punchy social commentary. The Five stars for a 90-minute wait – they must have band’s 2010 debut been good ‘Tak til de gamle’ (‘Thanks to the old’) garnered audience favourite ‘Wienercritical acclaim for its com- fritzl’, a critical-yet-catchy tune mentary on social issues like detailing the life of infamous gang violence and police activ- Austrian rapist Joseph Fritzl (the ity around Copenhagen. stage by rapper/singer/producer Pato Siebenhaar, who accompanied Von Dü on several tracks. The audience soaked up all of it, jumping and singing and shouting along. Infectious energy aside, Von Dü’s wit and sass might be completely lost on someone who doesn’t speak Danish. Luckily for those of us non-Danes in the audience, however, the band’s undeniable stage presence and knack for incorporating the crowd into their live shows more than made up for the language barrier. I, for one, normally feel far less engaged with music in foreign languages. What’s more, I’m far from a reggae aficionado and don’t exactly fit into Von Dü’s target audience. All of this considered, even I couldn’t resist the urge to clap and dance along. So, fellow Anglophones: fear not! Even if the subtlest of Von Dü’s witticisms race over your head, it’s safe to venture that you’ll find something else to cheer about. Jessica Hanley

The Growlers

Loppen, Sydområdet 4B, Cph K; 21:00; 110kr The Growlers encapsulate what Loppen has set out to do from the beginning: bring the finest surf-rock pyschedelia of the times to the stage. Hailing from the sunny Californian coast, this melodic, alternative band have played on some of the biggest stages in the States, with appearances at both Coachella and Lollapalooza last year. Although they’ve never quite become the commercial success they were destined to become, they’ve made major waves underground and are one of Jarvis Cocker’s favourite bands – he regularly plays them on his BBC Radio 6 Sunday service show.

Nightlife Riot: Duke Dumont

Simons, Store Strandstræde, Cph K; Fri 23:30; 110kr This UK-based DJ/producer has made a name for himself lately by remixing tracks from the Danish artist Bat for Lashes. His career first took off after winning the Diesel U Music Award in 2006, when he was still rooted in northwest London. Nowadays, Dumont is making his way across the globe, with live sets booked all over the world until next year. Note that it’s necessary to prebook and get your name on the guest list for this one: Simons won’t take in just any passer-by – if your name’s not on the list, you’re not getting in.

The Gaslight Anthem & Japanroids

Store Vega; 20:00; 250kr Opening tonight at Store Vega will be the Vancouver-based garage rock duo Japanroids, who have received well-deserved plaudits for their rough, electrotinged power pop. Headlining, meanwhile, are the US rock group from New Jersey, The Gaslight Anthem. This quartet offer a definably American style of rock: centring their song writing on a unique ethos that aspires to bringing popular rock music back to its original American roots. The band’s whole identity, in fact, is centred on Bruce Springsteen, and their music is steeped in the tradition of Americana. Daniel van der Noon the centre and simultaneously yields great insight into the city’s underground scene. Tonight will kick off with the release party of two mini-albums from local dance outfit Battle + Less Win, followed by an allout party until the very early hours of the morning. Frede Koppen, Emma Acs, Raw Power and Ocean View’s Bastian will all make appearances on the turntables.

Len Faki

Culture Box, Kronprinsessegade 54, Cph K; Fri 23:00; 70kr After emerging in the early 1990s, Len Faki (aka LaMonde) has become one of Germany’s biggest names on the electronic dance music scene. His career skyrocketed in the late ‘00s following a wave of popular mixes and a stream of charismatic live sets at prime European club venues. Renowned for his sharp, minimalistic and often industrial-flavoured dance music, as well as his energising live sets, Faki is something of a pioneer in the field – and his sonic dreams create a genuine sense of atmosphere Aviaja Bebe Nielsen

KIDS CORNER

Fishing for Easter eggs It’s almost Easter Monday and all over Denmark, grannies, grandads and other relatives are puzzling over who sent the pretty cut-out ‘gækkebrev’ letter that is now magneted to the fridge. The only clue is a poem, usually starting with ‘Roses are red, violets are blue …’ and dots instead of a name. If they can’t guess who sent the letter, they owe the lucky sender an Easter egg. And strangely enough, though they only have a handful of usual suspects to choose from, they almost never guess. You’ve just got time to make one yourselves (see how and much more at helendyrbye.blogspot.com). It’s a great way of fishing for chocolate. And while on the subject of fishing and chocolate … I had a young friend who loved chocolate but hated fish. Her clever mum hit on a bright idea, and when her daughter asked ‘What’s for dinner?’ instead of saying ‘fish’, her mum answered ‘sea chicken’. And that went down a treat. I’m not too sure about the ethics of ‘sea chickens’. It’s a little white lie, after all. But I’m all for encouraging children to try something new – like the wacky Easter chicken cakes we invented for the column this time. Though sea chickens don’t really exist, flying fish are pretty close. Not that you’ll find them in the meat section of your local Danish supermarket. Horse, perhaps. Flying fish, nay. But if you want to see fish, sea horses and even leafy sea dragons, you’ll have a whale of a time at Den Blå Planet.

It’s got everything from starfish to lumpfish, and crabs to crocodiles, and don’t forget the cichlids, “the best parents in the world”: fish who keep their eggs in their mouths for three weeks before they hatch. I bet you couldn’t do that with an Easter egg! In another tank a huge shoal of exquisitely sparkly piranha fish look like they’re performing a ballet in pinky-orange sequined leotards. You can test your grip against various sea animals and visit the restaurant, where fish is on the menu – but not the rare ones. There’s even a big friendly Pacific octopus if you take a guided tour behind the scenes. And in the long glass tunnel you’ll see fish swimming all round you, and perhaps a diver too. It would take you 9,000 years to drink all the water in the huge Ocean Tank, but I wouldn’t if I were you because there’s enough salt in it to season 120 million eggs.

THE FAMOUS smell of popcorn, sawdust and live animals is finally taking over the Danish cities and towns again. That’s right, despite the snow, sleet and freezing temperatures, the circus season has started. Circus Arena is the biggest circus in the Nordic countries, and traditionally the arrival of its enormous travelling circus tent marks the beginning of spring in Denmark. Upon entering you are met by clumsy clowns, laughing kids, pink candy floss, a rain of popcorn and the sweet smell of hotdogs. There truly is no better way to depict nostalgia. Once you have all your snacks and have made your way through the multicoloured ocean of balloons to sit down − stepping on several toes on your journey − you can lean back in the confidence that this circus has the artists, assembled from all over the world, to entertain you over the next two hours. The rush of excitement when you hear the welcoming “Ladies and gentleman” from the owner, Benny Berdino, is palpable. First off, out comes ... a singing clown. Well, not exactly what you’d expect, but rather enlightening. And if you think you’ve seen it all before, think twice, because chances are that you haven’t seen a clown, nor an entire circus, dance Gangnam style. Yes, Arena has joined in on the trend. If the clown from ‘It’ isn’t already haunting your

nightmares, then these Korean-lip-syncing ones are sure to do the job. Though disturbing, the introduction does manage to get the audience laughing. Once the last catchy tunes have left the tent, the real show starts and Arena offers everything you could dream of from a Czech juggler to daring artists from China to exotic dromedaries, zebras and elephants. You will find yourself desperately chewing on your nails with a racing heart, as the daring men from Ecuador do rope skipping and somersaults on a moving wheel 12 metres in the air, and later balance on a fine string even higher up. Even more nerve-racking are the exploits of six men racing around a spherical cage on

motorbikes, seemingly just missing one another, upside down and all around. If you have a weak heart, Arena may not be the place for you, but if not, it is perfect for all ages as there will be something for everyone. They have clearly thought about everything, and even in the break the entertainment continues with elephant rides for the children and clown antics. I felt like a child again as I giggled at one of them being hit by a water balloon. You just never know what to expect next, but one thing you can count on is leaving the tent with a satisfied smile.

GROWING up in ‘The South’ of the US, Easter meant one thing to me when I was a little girl: dressing up in a brand new spring dress, donning an Easter bonnet, finishing the look with patent leather shoes over lacey socks, and heading to church. As I impatiently sat through the long service, my mind inevitably drifted to the fun that would be had afterwards … playing in the forest surrounding the church grounds during the annual potluck. On these spring days, it was usually warm enough for all the church ladies to proudly spread out their delicious homemade casseroles and home-baked goodies on the long communal tables outdoors.

And each year, one of the most popular dishes was deviled eggs. Like most food in The South, these bite-sized, comforting, mayonnaise-laden delicacies are very simple and easy to make. And although they were my favourite back then, mostly for the ease by which they could be grabbed and eaten without interrupting playtime, they still continue to be a favourite of mine to add to any spring or summertime spread, and the variations are endless. Sometimes I stick to my mother’s recipe, and other times I like to spice it up a bit. This recipe goes great with a traditional Easter schnapps-accompanied lunch.

Part Parisian brothel, part retro antique shop, wholly unique

Have a close look as the floor is normally ... Whoah! Has Frank Jensen spiked the coffee or is that a gigantic mosaiced dinosaur supping on a Bailey’s Cream on the right?

Of all the dishes, the best was probably the Slab of beef served medium with caramelised yellow beetroot, and the least exciting, rather predictably, was the Green salad with pear, walnuts, blåskimmel blue cheese and a sherry vinaigrette. A Jerusalem artichoke soup, made with roasted almonds and dill oil, was deliciously creamy and warming – not too thick, not too thin, and with a nice crunch from the nuts and dried apple garnish. The delicate taste and texture of the Salmon tartare was successfully offset by a crust of toasted rugbrød, while the lightly battered calamari proved

As the name suggests, Vesterbro Vinstue pitches itself as more of a wine bar than a restaurant, but what if you fancy something solid to go with your pinot noir? Fortunately for those shunning a liquid diet, this Istedgade institution, open since the summer, offers a short but diverse Spanish-inspired menu of dishes that have been designed to be grazed upon while you sip your way through a multitude of wines. We rocked up on a Friday evening and the place was rammed. Every table, including the one in the 16-seater banqueting room, was occupied, while patrons nestled elbow to elbow along the bar. It was impossible to see past the jumble of legs to the bar, which the artist Tine Helleshøj made from a mishmash of old panels and doors found in the surrounding neighbourhood. The floor too, a mosaic of brightly coloured hand-cut linoleum tiles, was hard to appreciate through the maze of high-tops and Acne boots, yet the overall ambience was impressive. What was previously a soulless eatery, which primarily survived off the overspill of disconcerting drinkers from Bang & Jensen next door, has been transformed into an atmospheric venue that feels part 19th century Parisian brothel, part retro Danish antique emporium. Bare concrete walls are coated with random paper cuts, prints and wine tasting musings; nauticalstyle lamps hang low above wooden tables; candles drip over unpolished brass holders; and glass-fronted cabinets shelter bottles of wine. It’s a place you want to settle into. It’s a place where you could huddle around one of the large round tables with a gaggle of mates, but equally book a corner table to seduce a first date. And if you were to seduce or even sedate a date, the wine menu is ideal. There are currently 50 wines, soon to be bumped to 70, on offer. Thirty are available by the glass, and the prices range from 40 to 100 kroner. We started with the Asso de Jordan, a Spanish sparkling wine that is a non-remarkable but polite introduction to the bolder offerings to come. Our menu selection was swift. Advised to order between two and three dishes each, we plumped for five of the nine, and having moved on to a glass of the terribly named, but surprisingly tasty You Are So Cool wine – a rather murky French blend of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc – our dishes arrived. In retrospect we wished that we’d asked for a trickle of dishes rather than having them all at once so as to spread out the meal.

irresistibly moorish, especially when dipped in the citron mayonnaise, which has been dyed a striking black with squid ink. All of these 85kr dishes were startersize and when they arrived, they seemed quite puny. Yet due to their richness, they proved surprisingly filling. Five dishes between two left us sated, if not stuffed. Having now moved on to a glass of the 2010 Cycles Gladiator Zinfandel, it seemed rude not to accompany it with some cheese. Three cheeses, to be precise: Brie, a hard cheese peppered with salt crystals and a Danish blue served with

home-made crisp bread and sea-buckthorn chutney. There were also two puds, but these we saved for another time. All in all, we had a great evening. The atmosphere was brilliant. It was packed, super cosy, trendy without being pretentious, and the staff were friendly, knowledgeable and attentive without being rushed. If my priority was food, then I may choose another venue, but for a fun Friday night this Vesterbro haunt is a sure bet.

28 March - 5 April 2013

It falters with format and male-pattern melodrama ARUN SHARMA

The Place Beyond the Pines (15) Dir: Derek Cianfrance; US crime/ drama, 2012, 140 mins; Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper, Eva Mendes, Ray Liotta, Rose Byrne Premiered March 27 Playing nationwide

F

ORMED OF three distinct segments that appear to have been welded together without the right tools or a user’s manual, The Place Beyond the Pines is injuriously kick-started by a crotchcam view of Ryan Gosling’s six pack, a perspective as skin-deep as the film’s overblown title and much of what follows. Initially faceless, Gosling’s Luke adorns a sleeveless shirt and James Deans his way to the steel cage, where he and two other motorcycle daredevils provide an all-American mechanised rodeo to an expectant and bloodthirsty crowd. This testosterone-injected opening signifies director Cianfrance’s intention to cultivate Gosling as an edgy, disaffected, vaguely dangerous, neo-Brandoesque wild one. However, despite making his character work (albeit at the cost of looking fatuous), no amount of effort on Gosling’s part to align himself with the machismo-fuelled heroes of the past can disguise the fact that this film is poorly conceived, overly long and as cardboardy and chemically faked as a pine tree air freshener hanging in a minicab. To be fair, the film’s fixation on Gosling’s masculine aura is somewhat pertinent, as the story does wax lyrically about male identity and father-son relationships, but if these themes don’t exactly flourish it is because Cianfrance’s indulgence of ellipses feels far too much like a cheap shot, and one that makes ciphers of his characters. The film superficially strokes a triptych of fragmented and

Even the baby is clearly mesmerised by Gosling’s presence ...

bombastic articulations: Luke’s inexplicable and sudden urge to provide for a child he never knew he fathered with Romina (Mendes); policeman Avery Cross’s (Cooper) struggle to reconcile his sense of righteousness with his professional ambition; and finally, fifteen years on, as a collision between two teenage inheritors of their respective fathers’ sins. Throughout, Cianfrance sidesteps the potential depth and meaning of the narrative so as to give prominence to the melodrama of the characters stumbling upon their shared histories. The Place Beyond the Pines never

climaxes because it is incessantly on high alert and reducing the lives of its characters to their most intense moments: Luke heisting banks to support his son; Cooper fighting police corruption; their sons, oblivious to how their families are linked, flirting with disaster in and out of school as they circle each other like boxers. It’s a daisy chain of physical and psychological violence that sacrifices emotional specificity for sensational broad strokes. There are thus more nuances and dimensions to Luke’s chiselled form than there are in his compulsion to rob banks.

Blue Valentine, Cianfrance’s last outing with Gosling in tow, also suffered from a certain monotonousness as well as a frantic handheld style that was always getting in the way. However, at least the protagonists offered a successful study in romantic ambivalence and the anguish that arises from seemingly endless self-protection against a psychologically spiralling partner. There was real attraction and repulsion to be found, whereas The Place Beyond the Pines has a much wider canvas with the segments essentially forming monodramas that are so patchily written that the vital

moments feel less like recognisable human behaviour than recognisable screenwriter overreaching. Cianfrance also shamelessly abuses the wide-ranging score provided by Faith No More’s Mike Patton to fatten a flimsy story of oversimplified romantic notions of masculinity, fatherhood and sin to the level of adrenalised Greek tragedy. It is a sheen that crumbles fast and hard beneath the weight of a ridiculously relentless sense of self-importance. Gosling may well aspire to be a rebel with a cause, but a giant of cinema he is not.

An alien siren story that’s steamy but soulless The Host (11) Dir: Andrew Niccol; US sci-fi, 2013, 126 mins; Saoirse Ronan, Diane Kruger, Max Irons, William Hurt, Jake Abel Premieres March 28 Playing nationwide

T

HE HOST finds humanity somewhere in the future, and planet Earth has never been in better shape. There’s no hunger, wars or environmental crisis, and honesty and courtesy are practised by all. The only trouble is that hardly any humans have survived an alien inThe hardest part about playing two characters in one body, says Ronan, vasion of so-called Souls, who inhabit the bodies of humans is remembering when to turn off the Southern drawl

(‘hosts’), erase their minds and use their memories to round up more victims. Based on the Twilight author Stephanie Meyer’s bestselling 2008 novel, The Host is an ostensibly high-concept but philosophically tepid youngadult sci-fi flick, which should be a solid watch as it boasts the talented Saoirse Ronan (The Lovely Bones) and a script by writer-director Andrew Niccol (The Truman Show and Gattaca). But the shadow of Meyer hovers over it (rather, her soul inhabits it), meaning Niccol had his work cut out for him to make the film appeal to viewers outside of the target audience. The action begins when 17-year-old Melanie is cap-

tured by a mob of Soul-driven, hijacked humans. Among them, an uncharacteristically nasty and autocratic female (Kruger) supervises the installation of a Soul named Wanderer into Mel’s body. However, as Wanderer finds Mel’s mind too powerful to fully control and her memories too appealing to exploit, the initial struggle between the two morphs into some kind of an alliance, though resulting in a decidedly split and schizoid personality. Several flashbacks alert Wanderer to Melanie’s past, which involved an Adam and Eveesque relationship with the handsome Jared (Irons), now part of a small resistance hiding in a volcano in the south-

western US. On the romantic side, several massive dilemmas arise when the invaded Melanie reunites with Jared, especially since Wanderer develops a simultaneous crush on the equally strapping Ian (Abel). It all comes across as something like Invasion of the Body Snatchers meets Avatar or War of the Worlds, and while it presents a capable vehicle for themes of love and identity, there’s a regrettable overweight of sentimentality and adolescent self-admiration. What’s more, several steamy montages involving kissing in all kinds of weather are so shamelessly graphic, they’re very nearly nauseating.

28 March - 5 April 2013

New this Week GI Joe: Retaliation (11) Dir: John M Chu; US action/ adventure, 2013, 110 mins; Channing Tatum, Bruce Willis, Dwayne Johnson, Adrianne Palicki, Ray Stevenson When a doppelganger of the president takes over the White House, he orders the termination of the GI Joe team. Led by Roadblock (Johnson), a small team of GI Joes must expose the conspiracy and save the modern world. It’s obvious that Johnson is expected to rejuvenate a series that flopped in 2009, but it’s too much even for a man of his brute strength. Flat, awkward and simple-minded, Retaliation promises far more than it delivers. JH

Book Your Tickets Flight (15) Dir: Robert Zemeckis; US action/drama, 2012, 138 mins; Denzel Washington, Don Cheadle, Kelly Reilly, Bruce Greenwood, John Goodman, Melissa Leo Flight is a fine film that lives and dies by Denzel Washington’s central performance. Like vintage Scorcese, the narrative rockets along, Zemeckis portraying the events with the assuredness of a master, but with a sense of urgency that would befit a director half his age. While there’s a cartoon hyper-reality to the plot that doesn’t ring true, the proceedings are still excruciating and genuinely moving. MW

Django Unchained (15) Dir: Quentin Tarantino; US action/drama/western, 2012, 165 mins; Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kerry Washington, Samuel L Jackson Tarantino’s eagerly anticipated pastiche of the western epic is a bold, throbbing, exuberantly crafted piece of work – one that rattles cages with a vengeance. The film manages to conduct a joyride through old Dixie while simultaneously building up to a passionate climax steeped in heartbreaking romance and pacifistic, moral indignation. And while the Tarantino trademarks are aplenty, the film doesn’t buckle under their weight. KRG

The Impossible (15) Dir: Juan Antonio Bayona; Spa drama/disaster, 2012, 114 mins; Ewan McGregor, Naomi Watts, Tom Holland, Samuel Joslin The Impossible, based on the real-life experiences of a family caught in the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami, rarely lets up the pace. It is sometimes hard to watch as the characters are severely and relentlessly battered by the water and the all-encompassing hopelessness that follows after the wave hits. The work pays off tenfold, resulting in a tough realism that no doubt informs the performances and the emotional clout of the entire film. See this, and then go and hug your kids. MW

Avoid like the Plague Oz: The Great and Powerful (11) Dir: Sam Raimi; US adventure/fantasy, 2013, 130 mins; James Franco, Michelle Williams, Rachel Weisz, Mila Kunis, Zach Braff Intended as an unofficial prequel to the 1939 classic The Wizard of Oz, this film follows small-time circus magician Oscar (Franco) as he leaves the Kansas dustbowl for glittery Oz. The film is enjoyable to a point, and viewers will enjoy particularly poignant performances from Weisz, Williams and Kunis. However, director Sam Raimi attempts to dress up a dull plot with special effects, and while the result is visually dramatic, the script is dramatically thin. JH

A Good Day to Die Hard (15) Dir: John Moore; US action/crime, 2013, 97 mins; Bruce Willis, Jai Courtney, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Sebastian Koch, Cole Hauser Bruce Willis, presumably due to a clause in his contract with the Devil, returns as New York cop John McClane for the fifth time to battle evil terrorists. Coarse and monotonous where its predecessors were clever and complex, it’s no exaggeration to call A Good Day to Die Hard the worst film of the seemingly never-ending series. Perhaps most worrisome of all is the knowledge that the suffering is far from over and the franchise will continue. DS

The Croods (7)

The Sessions (3)

Dir: Chris Sanders; US animation/adventure, 2013, 98 mins; Nicholas Cage, Ryan Reynolds, Emma Stone, Catherine Keener In a prehistoric era called the Croodacious – when Mother Nature was still experimenting – the world’s first family embarks on the journey of a lifetime after the cave they inhabit is destroyed. While the technical details are impressive, The Croods sacrifices both story and characters, and the script lacks the flavourful wit and plot that make family animation flicks fun for more than just the kids. JH

Dir: Ben Lewin; US drama/ comedy, 2012, 95 mins; John Hawkes, Helen Hunt, William H Macy, Moon Bloodgood Based on the journalistic writings of poet Mark O’Brien (played by Hawkes), The Sessions is a warm and witty account of his attempts to lose his virginity – at the age of 38. Hawkes and Hunt are both well cast and have natural chemistry, and while their therapy sessions are amusing and genuinely moving, the script is slightly less convincing. One might assert that questions of authenticity are irrelevant, however, especially as so much of the film is successfully played for laughs. MW

Cloud Atlas (15) Also Playing

Parker (15)

Les Misérables (11)

Dir: Taylor Hackford; US action/crime, 2013, 118 mins; Jason Statham, Jennifer Loepz, Nick Nolte, Michael Chiklis, Clifton Collins Jr Parker is the sort of film in which you need to leave any questions of plausibility at the door and just enjoy the gaudy action spectacle. The plot is derivative, and like all good/bad action B-movies, is utter balderdash, slugglishly tumbling through the two-hour running time. What’s more, the ‘stick ‘em up!’ dialogue is cringe-worthy, and the characterisation ignominious. Nevertheless, it’s mindless entertainment that you can’t help but succumb to. LR

Dir: Tom Hooper; US drama/ musical, 2012, 158 mins; Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried, Helena Bonham Carter, Sacha Baron Cohen The bigest hype surrounding Les Misérables is Hathaway’s performance, and rightfully so. While she and Jackman are both sensational here, the rest of the cast range from the serviceable to the annoying, making the film too depressing and evocatively clawing that it is never an enjoyable viewing experience. You’ll either come out singing its praises or running for cover. Either way, it’s pretty miserable stuff. LR

G19

Dir: Tom Tykwer, Lana & Andy Wachowski; Ger/US/ Sin/HK drama; 2012, 172 mins; Tom Hanks, Halle berry, Hugh Grant, Hugo Weaving, Susan Sarandon Imagine a three-hour episode of an American soap opera with a 100-million-dollar budget, with each scene taking place in a different time period, and you get a sense of the colossal strangeness that is Cloud Atlas. It’s a deliberately eclectic mix of styles that frequently engage, despite occasionally failing to gel. Dramatically clumsy, aesthetically garish and philosophically daft, it’s whimsical folly on a grand scale: it shouldn’t really work, but it nearly does. MW

The Last Stand (15) Dir: Jee-woon Kim; US action/thriller, 2013, 107 mins; Arnold Schwarzenegger, Forest Whitaker, Johnny Knoxville Arnie fans will find The Last Stand entertaining enough – if they keep their expectations low. While fairly clichéd and predictable, the script is surprisingly solid, and the film retains pace with high-powered action and stunts. The efforts at humour miserably fail, however – Arnie delivers the truly amusing moments, and even those are sparse. It’s nevertheless entertaining to see Hollywood trying to hold onto its action heroes as they inevitably get old. LD

Elementary SVT4, Mon 21:00

IN THE 2002 UK comedy drama Cruise of the Gods, Steve Coogan plays a British actor who has sold out his career and former fellow actors for a US series called ‘Sherlock Holmes in Miami’. The title says it all, but little did they know that ten years on, life would imitate art in Elementary (SVT4, Mon 21:00), a new series starring Johnny Lee Miller as the British sleuth stateside. In New York seeking rehab, his handler is Joan (Lucy Liu), Dr Joan Watson to be exact, and so the fun and games begin. So far it’s been popular, garnering 73 on Metacritic, mainly thanks to Miller’s charm, although the critics tend to agree that it’s not as good as the British version, Sherlock. “There’s enough room left in the genre for another modern pairing,

and Mr Miller and Ms Liu bring something memorably new to each character,” praised the Wall Street Journal. “Along the way, Elementary should prove rather conclusively that it’s a solid cousin to Sherlock and will give fans of the character more chances to see him solve crimes,” chimed The Hollywood Reporter. The Huffington Post disagreed, citing another, perhaps less obvious choice, as its preferred Holmes US hit. “The two leads lack any kind of chemistry, platonic or otherwise, and the storytelling lacks the smarts and insight of one of TV’s best Sherlockian creations, House,” it said. Not sure if Gil Mayo Mysteries (BBC Ent, Sat 13:50 & Sun 14:00), starring the impressionist Alistair McGowan is Sherlockian, but in all, you can watch four episodes of
