BEN HAMILTON

FROM MAY 1, I will have been here ten years. Previously I lived in Southeast London, also for a decade. And it is curious to note that during my time here I have been a victim of crime five times (see G3 for details of The Illegal Trilogy, a dance piece that addresses the criminal industries of human trafficking, arms smuggling and drugs), while in London I never knowingly (there were assaults while I was intoxicated, but I’m not sure I had a good defence) had that privilege. However, there is a good reason for this, and it reflects well on Denmark. I am very relaxed. A fellow “chilled-out entertainer”, David Brent might say. Life here is a breeze compared to the one I led in the likes of New Cross, Lewisham and Brockley (pre-1994 when they closed down one pub and the crime rate went down by 85 percent overnight, precipitating gentrification in the flash of an eye). I have never once approached a dark alley, or a shifty individual

on Istedgade (where I live, in the middle of the red light district), and thought: “Don’t look like a victim; be prepared to run; noone expects to be stabbed in the throat by a bunch of keys – except perhaps Joe Pesci.” And when I visit the Danish countryside, I don’t feel myself unwinding from the cauldron of the city and regarding everyone else as a donkey because I’m Shergar (before he was shot). I just find it boring. But with this relaxation comes carelessness. Twice I have left my jacket in the changing room where I play football, and thrice (okay, probably a thousand times) I have left my bike unlocked. One such occasion occurred last Thursday. When I found my coat (previously they had stolen that as well – thank God for fashion-conscious thieves), it was missing my phone. When I return next week, I’m going to tape the charger to the hook with a few choice words. It will be fun. But am I annoyed? Not really, I was insured and losing all my numbers feels like a relief. Do I curse the crime-ridden Danish state? Nah, the police are hopeless but the streets are safe – how many cities can truly say that? Will I be more vigilant? No, I’m enjoying myself too much being blasé.

The Importance of Being Earnest

Krudttønden, Serridslevvej 2, Cph Ø; starts April 17, ends April 27,performances Tue-Fri 19:30, Sat & Sun 17:00; tickets: 140kr, group tickets: tickets@ ctcircle.dk, www.ctcircle.dk SINCE IT first graced Victorian stages in the late 1890s, Oscar Wilde’s wildly popular comedy of manners, The Importance of Being Earnest, has delighted audiences all over the world, everywhere except Denmark (or at least the original version). Until now, that is. Because from April 17-27, the wit and absurdity is coming to Østerbro courtesy of the Copenhagen Theatre Circle. It’s time to hold on to your handbag, rustle up some cucumber sandwiches and tell Bunbury to come into town for a change, as it’s going to be a raucous couple of weeks. Wilde’s most popular play follows two fun-loving upper-class gentlemen, Jack and Algernon. While Jack maintains a sombre residence in the country, he skirts off to enjoy a double-life in London under the name Ernest, telling those in the country he is looking after a brother of the same name. Similarly, city-dweller Algernon employs an invented friend, Bunbury, whose unending ailments require frequent ‘visits’ to his home in the country, allowing Algernon to shirk tedious social engagements at home. It seems that the play’s director, Jens Blegaa, is no stranger to double lives either.

Performance Romeo and Juliet

Gamle Scene, Kongens Nytorv, Cph K; ends May 7; performances at 20:00 on April 16, April 18, April 20, April 22, April 26, May 7; tickets 95– 695kr; introduction 45 mins before every performance in the balcony foyer (in Danish); www.kglteater.dk John Neumeier’s Romeo and Juliet, first performed in Copenhagen in 1974, is set to Sergei Prokoviev’s score from 1938, which includes the magnificent ‘Dance of the Knights’. Two ballerinas with outstanding charm and actingtalent share the part of Juliet: principal Susanne Grinder and corps de ballet member Ida Praetorius. FBP

Blegaa plays multiple roles himself, both as an actor and as a software developer when he’s not involved in theatre. Copenhagen theatre-goers may know him from his role as The Writer in the CTC’s 2012 production of The Good Doctor, or from earlier productions of The Tiger, The Dresser and The Music Hall. Elsewhere, Blegaa has worked with Copenhagen’s London Toast Theatre for numerous years and also participated in communications training programmes for various companies. But while he has starred in approximately 15 productions since his stage debut in 1992, The Importance of Being Earnest marks Blegaa’s first experience as a director. As a Dane who has acted predominantly in English-language productions, Blegaa said the choice for his directorial debut was an obvious one. “I chose this play because Oscar Wilde’s wit is irresistible to an Anglophile like me,” Blegaa told InOut. “And when I learned that it had apparently never been done by the CTC, I thought it was high time we took a swing at it.” While Wilde’s classic work is often adapted to modern times, Blegaa revealed that he has set the play in the Victorian era in which it was first produced in order to preserve its original charm. “I have taken a traditional approach to it – I don’t see any point in trying to shoehorn smart phones and TVs into the pro-

ceedings,” he explained. “I hope I can help the cast make the characters come alive in three dimensions and bring out the wonderful precision in Wilde’s writing, while keeping the play light and fun.” Blegaa isn’t the only CTC veteran whom audiences might recognise. Earnest’s cast includes Claire Clausen, a former contributor for The Copenhagen Post, who will play the socially aware (read: uptight) Lady Bracknell, while Brendan O’Gorman takes the stage as the Reverend Canon Chasuble. The clerical role in Earnest is a departure of sorts for O’Gorman, who last played an ugly stepsister in CTC’s 2011-12 pantomime Cinderella and took the lead role of Rene in ‘Allo ‘Allo in the spring of 2011. And let’s not forget Jack or Algernon, brought to life by Aidan O’Shea and Mario Paganini. Paganini was last seen in the CTC panto Aladdin and his Wonderful Lamp in January – a performance that prompted one audience member to tell The Copenhagen Post’s reviewer that “just looking at him was enough to make me laugh!” Often referred to as a ‘trivial comedy for serious people’, Earnest is meant to do just that – an ambition that the CTC fully intends to uphold with their production. “Wilde wrote Earnest with the express intention of it being sheer entertainment,” Blegaa explained. “And that’s exactly what we’re aiming for!”

The Illegal Trilogy

Store Carl at Dansehallerne, Pasteursvej 20, Cph V; starts Thu (April 11), ends April 14, performances at 17:30; tickets 180kr, concessions available; 315 mins including two intervals; www.dansehallerne.dk BEAR WITNESS to the realisation of three years of performances by the Mute Comp Physical Theatre – a bit like the full version of Kill Bill, but with three parts, not two! The Illegal Trilogy consists of three independent pieces – Knock on Unpainted Wood (2010), FUBAR (2011) and Blackout! (2012) – and this coming week, they will be performed in their entirety for the first time as one sensational extravaganza. Knock on Unpainted Wood, which originally premiered in 2010, is a poignant work that deals with the harsh everyday life of a victim of sex trafficking and explores the dark world of human exploitation. The name is a direct translation of a Polish saying that means you ‘hope everything goes well’ – a bit like the English saying ‘touch wood’. The obscure name is actually very appropriate as many victims of sex trafficking initially become involved in the dark trade due to the promise of a better life. However, the hope

and promise of a better life usually leads to a dark and tragic existence in the sex industry. FUBAR is the acronym for Fucked Up Beyond Any Recognition, a military phrase that is used to a describe a situation which is ... well, fucked. The piece opened in 2011 and got rave reviews. It takes on the bizarre yet powerful fascination with power and weapons that lies within many of us. This absurd preoccupation with weapons, and the innate human instinct to kill, is put front and centre in this physical satire in which we are presented with war, violence and child soldiers. The final performance of the night is Blackout!, an original dance work from 2012 about the surreal and horrifying world of addiction. It deals with the everlasting chase for the ultimate rush to top all others and the never-ending need for escape. The dance challenges our perceptions by exploring what it’s like to be drawn towards something that’s bad for you, to relentlessly pursue something despite being aware of the horrible consequences. The work sees the consequences of giving into addiction and finding yourself − and sense of self − slowly drowning in a sea of smoke, fog and piercing light. It goes without saying that the audience’s senses will be treated to a unique show of choreography,

music and lights. Although each show has been created and shown as an individual piece before, The Mute Comp’s initiative to bring them back as one solid show is welcome. The issues that are being dealt with are intertwined in the harsh reality of the world we live in: the world of sex trafficking is filled with drugs and violence, and sexual exploitation and drugs have sadly been a part of warfare for a long time. The Illegal Trilogy is set to be a show that is not only aesthetically pleasing, but very relevant in today’s world. Mute Comp has worked closely with different musicians to create a unique sound and feel in each of the dance pieces. Each musician and band will be performing live, creating an electrifying and vibrant feel throughout the evening. The Polish electronica band Pchelki will provide some uproarious music to Knock on Unpainted Wood. In FUBAR, the legendary Shack Shakers, all the way from Nashville, will blast some wild rock ‘n’ roll, and Blackout! will be accompanied by some pop music, general noise and slam poetry by Kirstine Stubbe Teglbjærg, MC Jabber and Dodebum. All in all, there are around 30 artists from eight different countries participating in this feast for the eyes. All three piec-

Sigh no more − the first family of folk are returning

Mumford & Sons

Falconer Salen, Falkoner Alle 9, Frederiksberg Mon 20:00 Tickets: 315kr; although sold out, there is a waiting list at www.billetnet.dk; otherwise, check internet forums for tickets

D

espite being a prominent player in the pop culture zeitgeist, there’s something remarkably uncool and antiquated about Mumford & Sons. The quintessential ‘marmite band’, you either love their brand of foot-stomping, tweed-wearing indie folk, or you loathe it. If

you’re yet to make your mind up, their performance at Falconer Salen this Monday is the perfect place to do so. Their rise to the top has not come without tremendous hard graft. Formed in West London back in late 2007, the four-piece were a core part of a burgeoning folk scene that also included the likes of Noah and the Whale and folk songstress Laura Marling (whom the frontman Marcus Mumford used to play drums for). It was a sonically ambitious and incestuous movement, which saw classically trained musicians hopping from band-to-band, and instrument-to-instrument, in a

pursuit to find the right sound they were looking for. After supporting members came and went, and two independent EP releases on Chess Club Records, the band were snapped up by legendary British label Island Records in 2009 and were finally on the brink of the big-time. Since then, they’ve turned from plucky hopefuls into a global success story thanks to their multi-million debut album, Sigh No More, from 2009 and highly-praised sophomore album Babel, which won Album of the Year at both the Grammys and Brits. While the masses have flocked to the band, they

continue to stay true to their roots, producing their own idiosyncratic blend of bluegrass twanging, Fairport Conventioninspired folk, and foot-stomping anthemic rock. Imagine Kings of Leon with banjos, and you’re not too far off the mark. Although they are often tarnished with a ‘middle of the road’ brush, Mumford & Sons are a riveting live act. They really set the bar high for music virtuosity. Behind the frontman’s gnarling voice and kick-drumming is Ben Lovett’s intrinsic, almost neo-classical keyboard compositions. Elsewhere, the introverted Winston Marshall

gives the band a traditionalist edge with some impressive clawhammer banjo strumming, which is perfectly complemented by Ted Dwane’s sturdy double bass keeping everything at a rocking pace. All that, plus lots of extra musical ditties on kazoos, resonator guitars and, most surprisingly, the addition of synthesisers as the band start to try out new songs for their third album. It’s hardly groundbreaking stuff, but hardly the standard pop fodder you’d expect from a band of such stature. If all that wasn’t enough to whet your appetite, Mumford & Sons bring along two bril-

liant bands for support. Firstly, there’s Montreal’s Half Moon Run, with their delightful threepart harmonies. And sandwiched in-between are London’s Mystery Jets, who make the sort of retro guitar-pop that many lesser bands cower away from. Originally billed to play at Vesterbro’s Store Vega, the concert had to be moved to the bigger Falconer Salen venue after tickets sold out like hot-cakes. As only their second-ever show on these shores, Mumford & Sons are out to impress. Slip on your finest waistcoat and head out for a night of folk-filled fun. Luke Richardson

Lana Del Rey

TAP 1, Ny Carlsberg Vej 91, Cph V; 20:00; 370kr Originally an upstate New York native, Del Rey transformed herself into the femme fatale character she’s known as today and became a popstar of immeasurable proportions, turning out an original retro-sounding, ‘60s style of pop and wearing the mask of a character distinct from that of her own. Her 2012 record Born To Die was met with considerable buzz and has gone on to make her one of America’s biggest international pop stars. It’s difficult to see exactly what separates Del Rey from the rest of the bunch, save for an unflattering ad campaign for Hennessey’s.

Lemâitre

KB18, Kødboderne 18, Cph V; 21:00; 60kr This Norwegian electronica duet, which consisting of the fresh-faced Ketil Jansen and Ulrik Denizou Lund, have received high praise from the Norwegian press, which calls the pair “the new Röyksopp”. With youth on their side and equal measures of speedy beats and impulsive keyboard sections, their cathartic electropop is sure to spread beyond the handful of festivals they’ve played. For those looking to keep going after the concert, stick around Kødbyen and check out what the meatpacking district has to offer.

Baby Woodrose

Loppen, Sydområdet 4B, Cph K; 21:00; 140kr Taking their name from a hallucinogenic Hawaiian plant, the trio Baby Woodrose formed in Copenhagen in 2001. Since then, they’ve offered a lucid, fuzzy brand of psychedelic punk rock. Emerging with their moody hit record, Money For Soul (2003), the trio went on to perform at Roskilde that same year, followed by a world tour. They are now beginning to garner international media attention with 2011’s Mindblowing Seeds & Disconnected Flowers. A complex layering of reverb, distortion and heavy garage-rock elements, their latest is a bold, fervent and danceable masterpiece.

Mads Langer (Extra Concert)

Store Vega; 225kr The Danish singer-songwriter launched his career in 2006 with his debut Attention Please. Nurturing his melancholic songwriting style, Langer has since developed a penchant for emotional acoustic songs about loss, love and emotional fixes. Walking the tightrope between poetry and corny musings, Langer plays it safe and avoids alienating his audience with anything that borders on the taboo. Still, Langer’s obvious talent as a professional singer cannot be denied, and it’s sure that a full house will be there to welcome him to the stage.

iving in Denmark, you must accept that there is no distinct time that the trees will begin to blossom and spring will arrive. With the seemingly endless winter still looming, a Reel Big Fish concert seemed to me the most foolproof way to escape the malaise often caused by the season. Having been blown away by this California-based punk band once before, my expectations were astronomical. While they’d aged a bit, which put a slight dampener on the energy level, their performance still satisfied the appetite of the party-hungry audience. Fellow Californians Suburban Legends were set to open the night, and the choice of the supporting act could not have been more suitable. Their funloving ska punk sets will make

you dance until you’re dizzy, and tonight’s showcased some hilarious synchronised dancing, anchored by a brass section that would make ‘90s boy bands green with envy. After a short 25-minute intermission, Lille Vega had filled up considerably and was set to receive the night’s main attraction. Reel Big Fish entered the stage in the most heroic manner possible – to the Superman theme music. Opening with ‘The Kids Don’t like It’, Reel Big Fish cemented their presence on stage as the premiere act, and the crowd quickly heated up the arena. Aaron Barrett, the last remaining founding member of the two-decade old band, stood out like the torchbearer in a shiny white blazer, fruity Hawaiian shirt and a pair of ‘these are so ugly, they are cool’ sunglasses. After a selection of songs based on the theme of love/ hate relationships, during which the 20-somethings could sing along nostalgically, Reel Big Fish dropped their biggest hit.

Sound of Panorama Bar: Steffi & Ryan Elliot

The band reeled them in hook, line and sinker

Ironically called ‘Sell Out’, this song was released in 1997, and to this day, it remains one of the catchiest ska punk songs on the market. Other highlights in the main set included classics like ‘Where have you been’ and ‘Everybody’s Drunk’, and it culminated with the hit song ‘Beer’, made famous by its inclusion in the soundtrack of the ‘90s cult comedy BASEketball. Following the show, the energy remained strong in the arena as the audience cheerfully anticipated the band’s return. Their encore opened with the twangy and funky ‘Monkey Man’, followed by the instrumental ska-punk anthem ‘Don’t Stop Skanking’.

Lille Vega; 21:00; 140kr Formed in Stockholm by a group of childhood friends, this group has carried over the peppy, naive and joyful whims of youth into a warming electro pop sound. Active since the turn of the century, their ultra-melodic sound has been exported far and wide, even enjoying relative success in the US with 2005’s Howl Howl Gaff Gaff. After a short period of dormancy, the Shout Out Louds have now returned with Optica, a 12-track album that perfectly sums up their chirpy, Shins-fashioned melodies. If you’re new to the band, start with their most recent material (available on Spotify).

Shout Out Louds

As Reel Big Fish tradition dictates, the reggae inspired ‘Suburban Rhythm’ was performed and then repeated in a selection of styles that inspired everything from vicious head banging and dorky square dancing to flamboyant disco boogie and bluesy nods. It was downright hilarious to watch, and as a compliment to the Danish fans, they received the award for ‘best head bangers’. Reel Big Fish ended the night with a brilliant cover of A-ha’s ‘Take on Me’. Despite the predictable set, the old crooners rocked the hell out of Vega, and the audience left ‘skanking’ their way out into the cold Danish night. Michalis Nielsen

Eclectic, daring and catchy, their sixth studio album, Royal Air Maroc (2010), remains their best yet. Other events include ‘Cre-active spaces’ on May 2 (a networking event that unites urban planners, social entrepreneurs, urban gardeners and essentially anyone and everyone who has radically rethought space use in an open dialogue) and ‘waves of transformations’ (an audiovisual bombardment series that takes place once a fortnight). The walk there takes one past some of the old, romantic leaning houses along Christianshavn’s canals, so if you fancy a scenic stroll with entertainment at the end of it and a sneak peak at Noma from the outside, the DOV will surely be worth your while. For more info and specific event prices, check out the website. You’ll find that tickets to most events can, for the most part, only be purchased onsite and will probably do less than 100kr worth of damage to your wallet. Dawda Jorbateh Loppen, Christiania; April 14; 50kr If you’ve never heard a kora played live, then Dawada Jorbateh’s show at Loppen is a must-see. The Gambian will be backed by Danish guitarist Preben Carlsen and Ghanian bassist Nana Osibio and looks set to usher in the spring at Loppen in style with a concert that will probably showcase quite a few tracks of his new, highly-rated album, Northern Light Gambian Night. Originally a percussionist, Jorbateh has in recent years performed at Roskilde and carved a name out for himself on the world music scene after moving to Denmark a good few years ago.

Rangleklods Rust, Guldbergsgade 8, Cph N; April 19; 120kr Rangleklods’s music is better than his name suggests. The last few years have seen this electronic musician follow in the heavy-bass line shadows of the likes of fellow Danish artists Troels Abrahamsen, Veto and Vinnie Who. Rangleklods’s music consists of ephemeral vocals and instrumentation slapped wittily onto a foundation of thumping electronic beats. Like many other musicians du jour, Rangleklods has pulled off the in-vogue maneouvre of practising his trade in and seeking inspiration from Berlin, a move which seems to be paying off for him following the release of his debut album Beekeeper last year and a solid showing on Roskilde Festival’s Cosmopol Stage. Mames Babegenush, Rust; April 13; 100kr Mames Babegenush sounds like the sort of band you’d hire at a wedding if you wanted things to steam up. The klezmer musicians produce exactly the sort of rattling, rowdy musical concoctions that’ll get most crowds jumping in no time. They aren’t all that established yet, so their gig at Rust will definitely be an opportunity for them to showcase their trade and make more of a name for themselves. LAST TIME around, the temperature outside was a frightful minus something, and in spite of a few flickers of optimism, the bleak, dank atmosphere of a standard savage Scandinavian winter was very much upon us. Fast forward a month and the snow and ice has returned with a vengeance, even though the sun is high in the sky these days and actually warms the skin when the wind abates. Spring is nigh, bringing with it the new-found optimism that tends to literally ‘light up’ Copenhagen. Here’s the best of what to expect from the start of the season:

TOK, Chronixx combines a traditional dancehall affiliation with powerful lyrics and a down-tempo edge. Føtex Various locations; open Mon-Fri 08:00-20:00, Sat-Sun 08:00-18:00; www.foetex.dk Somewhat surprisingly, Føtex has a small but good collection of swimming costumes. They have discreet and neutral colours, the quality is very good and the prices are competitive to say the least. Toast www.toast.co.uk This is a bit of a cheat since it is an online catalogue. They make beautiful swimming costumes though – these are very much costumes unlike most of the other swimming costumes and ones you’ll actually want to wear during bikini seasons as well. Their sizes are a big fit – so you will do well to order a size smaller than you usually fit. Their prices start at around 620 kroner. Joules www.joules.com There isn’t too much choice here, but you can’t really go wrong with this model since it suits almost everyone – bikini season or not. It is a bit Mad Men-inspired and reasonably priced – mostly because you can justify the purchase as an almost bikini season purchase as well. The price is £49.95 (440 kroner).

Kids Princess Spirreveip NEW K va rt e r h u s e t, Jemrelandsgade 3, Cph S; Sat April 13, 11:00-13:00; free adm; www. kulturogfritid.dk/kvarterhuset Crafts are a great way to spend an afternoon. Make your way down to Kvarterhuset and be part of the fun! This workshop will teach you how to make bracelets and earrings with jewellery maker Simmie Solberg. And if you love her work, peruse the exhibition, which is on display until the end of the month. AS Cupcake baking class Serenity Cupcakes ApS, Grønnegade 32, Cph K; Mon April 15, 18:00; 300kr; email info@serenitycupcakes.dk or call 3311 0921 between 14:00 and 15:00 to register; www.serenitycupcakes.dk Spend an evening in central Copenhagen learning how to bake and decorate the perfect cupcakes, just like those baked daily at Serenity Cupcakes. The price of the course includes snacks, drinks, and four cupcakes to take home (baked and decorated yourself!). Remember to bring your own apron and register one day in advance. Kids are welcome! Stops a ‘tryk’ in the city dead in its tracks Tryk Bar Møntergade 24, Cph K; open MonWed 14:00-02:00, Thu 14:00-04:00, Fri-Sat 14:00-05:00, Sun 14:00-02.00; www.trykbar.com LOCATED next to a lot of the bingedrinking pubs and clubs in the Gothersgade area, this pub is somewhat sheltered from the young crowd. If you find yourself at Tryk Bar though, you are in it for the long run. Somehow you never really get further on your planned pub crawl – and one beer turns into several. The interior is perhaps not very inventive, but it has what is required. You can hang out with your friends in a corner and not be disturbed, or you can take one of the tables in the middle of the pub next to the foosball table and be sure to be approached by other guests. The interior is designed with both purposes in mind. And even though Tryk Bar allows smoking, it shouldn’t be a deal breaker. Though it doesn’t appear very modern, the air conditioning must be very good since it isn’t too annoying putting up with all the smoke. Put it this way: it’s worth it. The bar is mostly a beer and whisky place. The Tuborg classic is 40 kroner a pint, and they also have a wide range of beers from Germany and the USA. But if they have a trademark, it has to be their range of whiskys, which includes 80 different types. The prices range from the Aberlour 10 Y for 38kr to the Glendronach olorose sherry 33 Y for 285kr. Even though the focus is obviously on the drinks department, they are kind enough to offer a small snack menu: three types for 60kr so the lightweights can have a time-out from the drinking.

The bar is heartily recommended by the city’s oldest troop of the boy scouts

At Tryk Bar they have made a conscious effort to avoid music that is too loud and in your face – possibly a reason why it is less visited by the young crowd. So it can a great place to meet up with friends you actually want to talk to, or a date that is more than just a pretty face. Most of the time the guests have a say regarding the playlist. So as the staff say: “Hip-hop, dance, techno, rap, techno and heavy metal are for

MAKING soup is easy: just stick a few left-over veggies and stock in the liquidiser and hey presto! But unless you keep the greens with the greens, and the red and orange vegetables together, you will end up with a not very yummy bowl of brown sludge. The two recipes here are winter warmers without being too carby and heavy. Carrots, parsnips and ginger are cheap and easy to find, but you may have to hunt around for the tom yum ingredients. The extremely well-stocked Thai supermarket at Istedgade 134 has everything you might need; if you’re feeling really

lazy, they also stock an excellent selection of ready-made tom yum and other zingy soup bases for instant warming deliciousness. Finally, stock: the days are too short now for making your own, but it’s worth investing in a bit more than an out of date Oxo cube from Abigail’s. My favourite back home in Ireland was Marigold Organic Boullion, but I have been unable to find it here in Copenhagen. Nevertheless, while it’s quite expensive at around 60 kroner, the A Vogel Herbamare Urtebouillon (from most large supermarkets) will give you plenty of soup all winter long.

Carrot, parsnip and ginger soup 1 litre vegetable stock 4 Carrots 4 Parsnips 1 Large mild Onion 1 tablespoon tomato puree Grated fresh ginger to taste (I like a lot) Salt and White Pepper to season FINELY chop the onion carrot and parsnip and sauté in butter in a large saucepan for a few minutes, taking care not to brown. Add the vegetable stock, grated ginger and tomato puree. Simmer for 20 minutes until vegetables are tender, check seasoning and add more tomato puree for colour if necessary. Pulse with a hand blender or use a potato masher just to break the vegetables up a bit – do not puree, consistency should be fairly fluid with visible pieces of carrot and parsnip. Serve.

Plot a course for this cathartic cottage to escape the city

The Willy Wonk-inspired Crispy sweetbread, mustard and beetroot, complete with a red-and-white peppermint candy colouration

sparkling wine is your thing (the tasty Henriet-Bazin Blanc de Noirs NV Grand Cru is, I believe, 125kr a glass). It’s true of everything we’d savoured at this early stage that the sophistication with which it was pulled off was rivalled only by how potent and lingering every taste was. The appetisers were modestly-sized creations, sure, but they left a considerable imprint on the palate. At this, the real starting point, the wine menu was uncorked. Eager to try it all, we opted for the eight-course option – meaning we dug into 800 kroners worth of skilfully paired wines. Unable to detail all

Beyond a truly exquisite and original gourmet joyride, Den Røde Cottage offers what you typically have to go on vacation to achieve (if you’ll pardon the highfalutin language): a veritable rejuvenation of the soul. A visit to the charmingly rustic, centuries-old red house in the Klampenborg woods makes the city feel further away than it actually is. Roughly as close to the ocean as to the unassuming exit on Strandvejen, you find yourself cosily shrouded on all sides by forest, air and striking stillness. Come to think of it, simply locating the place has the feel of a mystical, fairy talelike transition from the familiar and contemporary to the wonderful and timeless. Den Røde Cottage has boasted one Michelin star since earning it in 2012, just less than two years after Anita Klemensen (formerly of the highly-respected ‘1. th.’ back in the city) opened the place with Lars Thomsen, whose culinary chops were perfected at, among other places, Dragsholm Slot. The pair also run Den Gule Cottage, a sister establishment not too far away, which also appeals to quality-conscious customers in the market for either lunch or dinner. I can only speak in awe of the picturesque red cottage, where my guest and I were welcomed, not two seconds after slamming the cab door shut, by an open door and a smiling staff. Without crowding us, there was an air of relaxed cordiality surrounding the hosts, which made it feel like we were old acquaintances paying them a personal visit. Similarly, to an impressive degree, they all excelled at that all-but-neglected skill of carrying themselves off like they weren’t actually working. I suppose it’s easier to be the perfect host when you can take genuine pride in what you represent. The dining atmosphere was unpretentious, and the tastefully decorated room modern and uncluttered. Efficiently furnished without being spartan, the room felt ‘solid’ in a way that is achieved only with good materials and winning designs. Now, pleasantly seated on cushions that looked like they’d never been used before, we were treated to three delightful and ambitiously crafted appetisers, which foreshadowed an evening of rare culinary artistry – this proved true and is worth noting in light of the very reasonable price level. There were Mussels in seaweed with scooped-up cucumber bits, Almonds roasted in artisanal Danish stout, Salmon with smoked curd cheese and more – all served consecutively, which made each treat shine and amounted to a well-rounded crash course in the Royal Copenhagen product line. Enjoy with a glass of champagne if

eight here, I can attest to the expertise with which they were collectively orchestrated and the resulting harmony when they were enjoyed. A 2011 Riesling Spätlese from Mosel, Germany, stood out and made its dessert course extra divine (citrusy icecream with shortbread, meringue and a few local, freshly picked shoots). What else made our evening? Generally seasonally informed, a breakdown of (some of) the highlights included: Lumpfish roe with a poached egg, Pan-fried cod garnished with leeks and smoked sauce, Crispy sweetbread with mustard and beet-

root (visually irresistible given the candycoloured beetroots), Danish veal with celery and capers, an aged cheese symphony, and last but not least Klemensen’s legendary four-layer chocolate cake with sweet apple puree and (yet more) icecream. Still not excited about a trip to Klampenborg? Let me paraphrase then: displayed in those three appetisers and eight courses was more than twice the gourmet virtuosity and inspiration we paid for.

Its intrigue and intimacy make for a story worth telling LUKE RICHARDSON

Stories We Tell (15)

Dir: Sarah Polley; Can doc, 2013, 108 mins Premiered April 4 Playing at Empire Bio, Dagmar and Vester Vov Vov

F

OLLOWING 2012’s mawkish love triangle movie Take This Waltz, Canadian actress/filmmaker Sarah Polley steers away from fiction altogether and steps into the treacherous world of documentary with Stories We Tell. Released as part of the DOXBIO 2013 programme, it’s a biographical essay film, tackling the unspoken truths and lies that have engrossed the 34-year-old’s life. It could have been yet another forlorn, syrupy mess, but turns out to be one of the most intriguing and poignant films of the year thus far. “Why would anyone want to know our story?” This frank statement from Polley’s older sister Susy permeates the film’s opening prologue, as we get a snapshot of a liberal, middle class white family from Toronto, Canada. So far, so normal, but this astute young filmmaker buries herself in the family’s history to unleash a story of great mystery and intrigue. Those revelations are probably best left unsaid here. Suffice to say, the many twists and turns of Stories We Tell left me picking up my jaw from the floor, fluttering between being astonished, mournful or in fits of laughter throughout the near twohour running time. Comprised of archival home video footage and extensive ‘interrogations’ with her family and friends, Polley sets out to paint a portrait of her mother Diane, an exuberant wouldbe starlet who passed away in 1990, when Sarah was eleven years old. To build up the story, Polley’s reclusive

One of the disadvantages of digging up family secrets, as Polley finds out, is discovering that you were the result of an extramarital affair

father Michael, a former actor himself, candidly narrates the whole film through a recital of his fantastic biographical prose, detailing the intricacies of his professional and romantic relationship with Diane. The effect is both haunting and emotional, removing a subjective barrier that is so often prevalent in documentary filmmaking, and giving us a direct homage to a remarkable woman. Perhaps more surprising than the small story revelations is Polley’s deft ability to make them cinematically enthralling. It’s a far cry from a nuts and bolts thriller, yet there are many

moments in Stories We Tell where you could cut the tension with a knife. The air of trepidation starts with the pensive documentary subjects; particularly the host of friendly siblings who are worried that divulging their ephemeral memories of Diane will change the public’s perception of her. Ultimately, this fear ends up in the hands of Polley herself, and her longing to reveal the family skeletons in the closet. This alone would make this curious little film a riveting watch, but Polley goes a step further to engage our interest in her personal pursuit

for the truth. Circling around the idea of malleable memories and hidden meanings, she ignites the audience’s curiosity, and we start to consider our own family secrets and who can really claim ownership of a story or memory. Stories We Tell doesn’t necessarily fall into a succinct beginning, middle and end structure. Then again, however, as the film reminds us, neither does life. Despite a few meandering moments and an overzealous use of archival footage, the film never feels indulgent or sickeningly sweet. In fact, it’s entirely absorbing and an

achievement that Polley has created such an intriguing personal essay film that not only manages to eulogise her upbringing, mother and family altogether, but brings the audience along for the ride. After a protractedly rousing finish and the humorous credits come to a close, you’ll walk out of the cinema believing that Polley could be one of the most exciting young filmmakers of a generation – not only because the story she’s just divulged was so absorbing, but because it leaves you questioning the lies, hidden truths and stories told by the people who surround us.

You should have stopped with Sparta, Gerard Olympus Has Fallen (15) Dir: Antoine Fuqua; US action, 2013, 120 mins, Gerard Butler, Morgan Freeman, Aaron Eckhart Premiered April 4 Playing nationwide

O “Listen, kid. I know this film is so bad you want to walk out of the theatre, but try to stick it out for my sake”

H NO! It’s happened again! We’re on the brink of World War III – but fear not readers, for Gerard Butler and the Land of the Free are here to save the day! While Butler himself may be Scottish, you wouldn’t think it in Olympus Has Fallen. He stars as Mike Banning, the former head of security for the

universally-adored President Asher (Eckhart). After a fatal accident 18 months prior left the Asher family in tatters, the disgraced Banning is pushed back to a sideline government role. Meanwhile at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, a clan of highly-skilled North Korean terrorists infiltrate the world’s most fortified house without a hiccup, and take the president hostage. Not only do they want American forces to withdraw their support for South Korea, they intend to use the States’ own nukes to turn the nation into a destitute wasteland. With the acting president, House Speaker Trumbull (Freeman), and the rest of Team America in dire straits, it’s left to the broad-

shouldered Banning to use his Intel and military expertise to save the president – nay, the world – as we know it. Given the current climate surrounding a potential North Korean nuclear attack, seeing this star-spangled, preposterously right-wing American film was slightly discomforting – not because it is an intelligent and harrowingly coincidental portrayal of the current situation, but because one can imagine gun-toting patriots taking some sort of solace in the inherently prejudicial picture. Directed by Training Day’s Antoine Fuqua, Olympus Has Fallen is a clunky, ‘one man vs the world’ procedure that plays out like a deviant adapta-

tion of Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six series, mixed together with Die Hard. Unlike Bruce Willis, Butler is so devoid of humour or charm that his boisterous action-hero shtick – not to mention a sketchy American accent – is excruciating. Relying on bloodied fight sequences and shoddy CGI explosions, the supporting cast are given nothing in the way of a good script or space to show off their acting credentials. Instead, they’re left hanging off the screen looking either despondent or aghast. After stomaching this two-hour snooze fest, I was beginning to share their pain. LUKE RICHARDSON

6 - 11 April 2013

New this Week Identity Thief (11) Dir: Seth Gordon; US comedy, 2013, 111 mins; Jason Bateman, Melissa McCarthy, Genesis Rodriguez, John Cho, Amanda Peet When a shy businessman discovers his identity has been stolen, he travels from Denver to Miami to find the harmless-looking culprit who has been living it up with his credit card. The heart of Identity Thief’s humour lies with Bateman and McCarthy who save a film that would otherwise be running on empty. Even so, Bateman’s ace timing and McCarthy’s physical comedy aren’t enough to distract viewers from the tiresome script. JH

Book Your Tickets Flight (15) Dir: Robert Zemeckis; US action/drama, 2012, 138 mins; Denzel Washington, Don Cheadle, Kelly Reilly, Bruce Greenwood, John Goodman, Melissa Leo Flight is a fine film that lives and dies by Denzel Washington’s central performance. Like vintage Scorcese, the narrative rockets along, Zemeckis portraying the events with the assuredness of a master, but with a sense of urgency that would befit a director half his age. While there’s a cartoon hyper-reality to the plot that doesn’t ring true, the proceedings are still excruciating and genuinely moving. MW

Django Unchained (15) Dir: Quentin Tarantino; US action/drama/western, 2012, 165 mins; Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kerry Washington, Samuel L Jackson Tarantino’s eagerly anticipated pastiche of the western epic is a bold, throbbing, exuberantly crafted piece of work – one that rattles cages with a vengeance. The film manages to conduct a joyride through old Dixie while simultaneously building up to a passionate climax steeped in heartbreaking romance and pacifistic, moral indignation. And while the Tarantino trademarks are aplenty, the film doesn’t buckle under their weight. KRG

The Impossible (15) Dir: Juan Antonio Bayona; Spa drama/disaster, 2012, 114 mins; Ewan McGregor, Naomi Watts, Tom Holland, Samuel Joslin The Impossible, based on the real-life experiences of a family caught in the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami, rarely lets up the pace. It is sometimes hard to watch as the characters are severely and relentlessly battered by the water and the all-encompassing hopelessness that follows after the wave hits. The work pays off tenfold, resulting in a tough realism that no doubt informs the performances and the emotional clout of the entire film. See this, and then go and hug your kids. MW

Avoid like the Plague The Place Beyond the Pines (15) Dir: Derek Cianfrance; US crime/drama, 2012, 140 mins; Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper, Eva Mendes, Ray Liotta, Rose Byrne Formed of three segments that appear to have been welded together without the right tools, The Place Beyond the Pines never climaxes because it is incessantly reducing the lives of its characters to their most intense moments. Cianfrance sidesteps the potential depth of the story to give prominence to the melodrama, and the result is a film that is poorly conceived and overly long, crumbling fast beneath the weight of a relentless sense of self-importance. AS

The Host (11) Dir: Andrew Niccol; US sci-fi, 2013, 126 mins; Saoirse Ronan, Diane Kruger, Max Irons, William Hurt, Jake Abel The Host is an ostensibly highconcept but philosopically tepid young-adult sci-fi flick, which should be a solid watch as it boasts a talented cast. But while the film presents a capable vehicle for themes of love and identity, there’s a regrettable overload of sentimentality and adolescent selfadmiration. What’s more, several steamy montages involving kissing in all kinds of weather are so shamelessly graphic, they’re very nearly nauseating. KRG

GI Joe: Retaliation (11) Dir: John M Chu; US action/ adventure, 2013, 110 mins; Channing Tatum, Bruce Willis, Dwayne Johnson, Adrianne Palicki, Ray Stevenson When a doppelganger of the president takes over the White House, he orders the termination of the GI Joe team. Led by Roadblock (Johnson), a small team of GI Joes must expose the conspiracy and save the modern world. It’s obvious that Johnson is expected to rejuvenate a series that flopped in 2009, but it’s too much even for a man of his brute strength. Flat, awkward and simple-minded, Retaliation promises far more than it delivers. JH

Oz: The Great and Powerful (11) Dir: Sam Raimi; US adventure/fantasy, 2013, 130 mins; James Franco, Michelle Williams, Rachel Weisz, Mila Kunis, Zach Braff Intended as an unofficial prequel to the 1939 classic The Wizard of Oz, this film follows small-time circus magician Oscar (Franco) as he leaves the Kansas dustbowl for glittery Oz. The film is enjoyable to a point, and viewers will enjoy particularly poignant performances from Weisz, Williams and Kunis. However, director Sam Raimi attempts to dress up a dull plot with special effects, and while the result is visually dramatic, the script is dramatically thin. JH

A Good Day to Die Hard (15) Dir: John Moore; US action/crime, 2013, 97 mins; Bruce Willis, Jai Courtney, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Sebastian Koch, Cole Hauser Bruce Willis, presumably due to a clause in his contract with the Devil, returns as New York cop John McClane for the fifth time to battle evil terrorists. Coarse and monotonous where its predecessors were clever and complex, it’s no exaggeration to call A Good Day to Die Hard the worst film of the seemingly never-ending series. Perhaps most worrisome of all is the knowledge that the suffering is far from over and the franchise will continue. DS

Cloud Atlas (15) Dir: Tom Tykwer, Lana & Andy Wachowski; Ger/US/ Sin/HK drama; 2012, 172 mins; Tom Hanks, Halle berry, Hugh Grant, Hugo Weaving, Susan Sarandon Imagine a three-hour episode of an American soap opera with a 100-million-dollar budget, with each scene taking place in a different time period, and you get a sense of the colossal strangeness that is Cloud Atlas. It’s a deliberately eclectic mix of styles that frequently engage, despite occasionally failing to gel. Dramatically clumsy, aesthetically garish and philosophically daft, it’s whimsical folly on a grand scale: it shouldn’t really work, but it nearly does. MW

Also Playing Les Misérables (11) Dir: Tom Hooper; US drama/ musical, 2012, 158 mins; Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried, Helena Bonham Carter, Sacha Baron Cohen The bigest hype surrounding Les Misérables is Hathaway’s performance, and rightfully so. While she and Jackman are both sensational here, the rest of the cast range from the serviceable to the annoying, making the film too depressing and evocatively clawing that it is never an enjoyable viewing experience. You’ll either come out singing its praises or running for cover. Either way, it’s pretty miserable stuff. LR

The Sessions (3) Dir: Ben Lewin; US drama/ comedy, 2012, 95 mins; John Hawkes, Helen Hunt, William H Macy, Moon Bloodgood Based on the journalistic writings of poet Mark O’Brien (played by Hawkes), The Sessions is a warm and witty account of his attempts to lose his virginity – at the age of 38. Hawkes and Hunt are both well cast and have natural chemistry, and while their therapy sessions are amusing and genuinely moving, the script is slightly less convincing. One might assert that questions of authenticity are irrelevant, however, especially as so much of the film is successfully played for laughs. MW

Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God SVT1, Tue 22:00

I KNEW we were in trouble when I saw the photo caption: “The Rev Lawrence C Murphy, who was in charge of a boarding school for the deaf”. Made by Alex Gibney, who Esquire magazine in 2010 said “is becoming the most important documentarian of our time”, Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God reveals the stories of four deaf men abused by an American Catholic priest in the 1960s (one of the vocal translations is provided by Ethan Hawke!) and the ensuing cover-up that eventually involved the Vatican. Released last September, the film scored 98 percent on Rotten Tomatoes (Catholic World Report’s reviewer felt it pursued “a nasty anti-Catholic agenda”) and

78 on Metacritic. The New York Times loved the way the subjects were filmed “against dark backgrounds with soft, indirect light [that] emphasises the expressivity of their faces and hands”. Emphasising vocal expressivity is the three-episode British series Tourettes: Let Me Entertain You, a talent show with a difference, as the competitors are liable to involuntarily scream “Chlamydia” at members of the audience. According to onthebox.com, this is “genuinely inspirational and informative television”. Elsewhere, we’re sure Oscar Pistorius: What really happened? (DR1, Mon 20:00) won’t actually tell us, but let’s hope the BBC doc series The Secrets of

Everything (DR3, Sun 20:00) delivers on its promise to shed some light on some of the weirdness of the universe; Man Utd vs Man City (K6, Mon 20:00) should have been the game of the season, but even if City win, they’ll still be 12 points behind with just seven games remaining; SVT1, Tue 22:00 Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God NYC 22 (TV2 Zulu, Sun 10:50) is a US procedural cop series that never made it past series one; Buffalo Bill (DRK, Mon 19:00) deals mainly with the success of his Wild West Show during the 1880s; while Stan Lee’s Superhumans (DR3, Tue 20:00) conjures up some freaks of nature from around the world, and no doubt some inspiration for the presenter.
