THE COPEN

THE CHILDREN’S FAIR 2012!

International and Danish professionals and their families Sunday 17 June from 14 - 17 at Valbyparken

Dear Copenhagen Post readers,

I don’t feel it should be expected that everyone shares the same cultural or recreational habits that Danes do, or that libraries or associations have the same importance for other cultures as they do in Denmark. This is where children meet, and where their parents get to know each other. None of this is written in any of the scores of welcome folders newcomers receive. And sometimes, simple advice about how to meet Danes is treated like top-secret information.

i i i ii On behalf of all our employees, I would like to welcome you to second annual Children’s Fair.

Our decision last year grew out of the realisation that despite an on-going discussion about foreigners in Denmark, there were few initiatives that were of use to foreign families in their daily lives.

As the father of two young children, I appreciate being able to live in a country where it is possible to combine family and career. My family and I live in Copenhagen, and we frequently make use of the city’s recreational facilities. My children are involved in after school activities and are regular patrons of the local branch of our public library, parks and playgrounds. We’re happy with our lives in Copenhagen, but the question is whether foreigners living in Denmark would find it equally natural to make use of everything the city has to offer them.

i i

Raffle for Danish Red Cross

the City of Copenhagen, the Copenhagen police and the fire brigade, and the Employment Ministry, we have been able to organise a day for the entire family to enjoy sports, culture and other activities, while the same time learning more about what the city has to offer them.

i i

That’s unfortunate, because when we time and again talk about the vaunted Danish ‘work-life balance’, the ‘life’ half of the equation rests on cultural activities and community groups. I don’t think foreigners are as familiar with Danish socialisation customs as we think they are, but we are beginning to grow more conscious that they aren’t. And that’s something that is reflected in the support this year’s Children’s Fair has received. Thanks to the co-operation of DGI, the Copenhagen Public Library,

i i

Through the generous contributions of our partners, we will again this year be offering pony rides, face painting and balloon animals – all free of charge. A number of the groups in attendance will be performing. So, pack a picnic basket, hope for good weather and come out and join us and our families. We promise you lots of fun and the opportunity to meet other foreign and Danish families. Yours sincerely,

i i i

Support their efforts in Syria! Raffle tickets will be sold for 10 kr each and 50 kr for 6 tickets! All proceeds from the raffle will go directly to the Danish Red Cross.

i i i
