BEN HAMILTON

I’VE INVENTED a new game. From my Istedgade flat, I have a fantastic view of the street’s biggest sex shop (No, I haven’t been in all of them) and a fair stretch of road. First to five, you score points if you can predict who will enter. Women, children, and people you actually know count for double, and you also score points for prams. Speaking of long winter evenings, where am I going to find a decent pool table now Bloomsday is closing down. While it’s a popular pub with some of the most faithful regulars in the city, being off the beaten track, it doesn’t get the passing trade (particularly from Swedes and Norwegians) that you need to survive and thrive. Some Swedes have bought it and intend to convert it into yet another cocktail pub. So, its 15th anniversary party – on the day that this issue hits the streets, with “live music, DJs and lots of free beer” – will be their last. While it’s regularly referred to as an Irish pub, it’s always been popular with the English - or as popular

as it’s possible to be with the English. The annual summer fete at St Albans Church, Abigail’s food shop, Monday’s St George’s Day celebrations at the recently-opened St Nikolai pub, a World Cup game on the telly – the numbers who go are only a dip in the ocean (sorry … insensitive, Titanic, get over it) compared to the estimated 15,000 who regularly complain on our website and live in Denmark. Go to these events and half the people there are Danish or American. I defy anyone to name me somebody Irish who’s ever stayed in on St Paddy’s Day (okay, maybe Oscar Wilde when he was in prison ... and Shergar). But with the English, mention an English event and it’s all awkwardness and evasiveness, regional stereotyping, inverted snobbery and a fear of ending up at an EDL convention. I remember during the last World Cup trying to get a sing-along started in Bloomsdays – I felt like Oswald Mosley. That’s no reflection on that pub – it was often a great place to see a game. And once you got used to a certain somebody’s demeanour, it had a Fawlty Towers-esque quality that will be sorely missed. More English have bonded over stories about that bloke from Bloomsdays than celebrated St George’s Day. Yeah, us English, we dislike most things, but we do like a whinge.

Go on, who’s got the best stance? Put your ballet knowledge to the test.

Balanchine & Stravinsky

Gamle Scene, Kongens Nytorv, 1055 Cph K; ends May 21; performances at 20:00 on Fri, Sat, Tue, Thu, May 5, May 15, May 19, May 21; tickets 95–595kr; introduction 45 min before every performance in the balcony foyer (in Danish); www.kglteater.dk THE ROYAL DANISH Ballet is celebrating the artistic collaboration between choreographer George Balanchine and composer Igor Stravinsky with a ballet evening in three parts: the early neoclassical Apollo, the tightly-knit Agon, and the jazzy Symphony in Three Movements. Balanchine and Stravinsky were both Russian artists who made it big in the West. Both began their careers with the Ballets Russes - the trendsetting Paris-based company that inspired the visual and performing arts as well as fashion in the early 20th century and beyond. While Stravinsky (born 1882) already composed for the Ballet Russes’ early successes like Firebird (1910) or The Rite of Spring (1913), the younger Balanchine only joined the company in 1924, five years before its effective disintegration. But the two artists’ collaboration outlasted the influential Ballets Russes. When Balanchine went to America in 1933 to found what is today considered one of the world’s foremost ballet companies, the New York City Ballet, Stravinsky remained a favoured composer of his.

Balanchine’s works have become increasingly prominent in the Royal Danish Ballet’s repertoire since Nikolaj Hübbe took up the post as the company’s artistic director in 2008. Hübbe spent a considerable part of his career as a principal dancer with the New York City Ballet, before returning to his hometown Copenhagen. Three of Balanchine’s works have already featured in the Royal Danish Ballet’s 2011/12 season, including his dazzling version of The Nutcracker over Christmas, which hadn’t been performed in Europe since the early 1970s. The Balanchine & Stravinsky evening begins with Apollo, Balanchine’s earliest surviving piece. He originally choreographed it for the Ballets Russes in 1928. The ballet is about the god Apollo and his encounter with three muses who all try to win his favour. Apollo dismisses the first two after they have each presented themselves to him in a dance: Calliope (muse of poetry) and Polyhymnia (muse of mime). Instead he chooses Terpsichore (muse of dance) who gets to dance a duet with him. Critic Nancy Goldner felt there was a “sportive, humanising attitude toward mythological figures” in the piece that was unsettling, especially for its early audiences. Throughout the ballet, Apollo partners all the muses at once, two at a time, or one by one on the ground and in the air – in an early version of what became Balanchine’s distinctive neoclassical style. Mr B – as he was called in his company – himself regarded Apollo as

Mozart

his artistic coming-of-age. The evening’s second piece, Agon, was premiered by the New York City Ballet in 1957 and is often described as one of Balanchine’s ultimate masterpieces. The choreography for 12 dancers is entirely abstract, without alluding to even a hint of storyline or clear emotional development. Instead, it follows Stravinsky’s music, for which the composer was partly inspired by Renaissance court dances; in response, the choreography features amusingly exaggerated bows and arm movements. Mainly, however, the dancing is serious, and Balanchine choreographs ballerinas in extreme acrobatic positions, drawing on classical ballet moves but also on a range of more pedestrian kicks and lunges. His choreography perfectly complements Stravinsky’s first experiments with twelve-tone technique in the score. Symphony in Three Movements concludes the triple bill. The piece was first presented at the Stravinsky Festival during which the New York City Ballet performed 31 ballets to Stravinsky’s music in the summer of 1972. Like Agon, and some of Mr B’s other choreographies, Symphony in Three Movements refers to the music without telling any particular story. It is a sprawling ensemble work in which Balanchine responds to Stravinsky’s jazzy score by using angular turned-in movements and brisk, athletic walking sequences.

Betty Nansen Teatret, Frederiksberg Alle 57, Frederiksberg; ends May 12, performances Mon-Fri 20:00, Sat 15:00; Tickets: 150-360kr; 120 minutes with intermission; www.bettynansen.dk The creative team who brought you Bob Dylan and Come Together have taken on this pop interpretation of Mozart. It’s not for the purists, but rather a bold introduction to a new crowd of classical music groupies. Incorporating water cascading from out of nowhere, the cast of singers are literally gurgling their lyrics underwater. Imagine thousands of people crammed into your bathroom watching you sing along to Mozart renditions while splashing around in the tub. EB

The Good Doctor

Krudttønden, Serridslevvej 2, 2100 Cph Ø; ends Sat; performances Fri & Sat 20:00; Tickets: 140kr, group discounts, tickets@ctcircle.dk; www.ctcircle.dk Broadway’s master of comedy Neil Simon (The Odd Couple) has craftily woven together a collection of Russian playwright Anton Chekhov’s farcical short stories, slapstick and music to bring you The Good Doctor. While not all the sketches are purely comedic, the show’s director, Frank Theakston, the chair of the Copenhagen Theatre Circle, emphasises that almost all contain humorous, bittersweet elements. Absurdity underlies much of the humour, making light of the world’s madness. See page 18 in the newspaper for a full review. EB

THERE’S NOTHING worse than trying to understand jokes in a language that’s not your own. Hearing laughter without catching the punchline often creates some sort of paranoia that the joke is on us. But at the Copenhagen Anglo Comedy Festival, you can laugh without fear. Presumably, your biggest worry will be arriving late, being forced to sit in the front row, and having mocking gibes thrown at your tardy-self by top comedians from around the globe. This four-day festival promises a gaggle of laughs in a language you do understand. Comedy in English is becoming more and more popular in Denmark, attracting both native-English speakers and Danes alike. The impressive Copenhagen Anglo Comedy Festival line-up features a mixture of big local names and international guests like Mark Little (Aus), Al Pitcher (NZ), Christian Schulte-Loh (Ger), and Addy van der Borgh (UK).

Little is probably more wellknown in Britain than Australia for his role as Joe Mangel in the soap opera Neighbours. Pitcher, who is known for his quirky, selfeffacing, rambling comedic style, has been previously described as a kid who has drunk too much lemonade. Pitcher will unleash his freewheeling, sugar-high performance on the festival’s opening night. While the UK’s Van der Borgh will draw on his physical theatre and clowning training to portray a range of humorous voices and characters. One of the festival’s organisers, Canada’s Joe Eagan, who is a comedian in his own right, says Schulte-Loh is one to look out for on May 3. Yes, it does sound bizarre endorsing a German stand-up comic when Germany is generally considered as somewhat lacking in the funny gene. But Schulte-Loh seems to be an exception, or a freak of biological nature, highlighted by both his height and preposterous sense of humour. “Don’t judge a book by its cover – unless it’s a German passport,” he urges. The extremely tall comedian has toured several successful shows including “Stop Laughing, I am German” and “I am German, I should not be here!” The Swedish-based Eagan, meanwhile, will play host on May 4 and bring out his famous PowerPoint presentation that makes light of living in Scandi-

here’s something special happening in the UK music scene at the moment, with a host of quality female performers coming out of the woodwork. Although she’s been around for some time, Estelle has found prominence in the last few years, working with a host of top performers to gain recognition in what has always been a tough and competitive genre. While Estelle can sing R&B with the best of them, it’s her forays into hip-hop and her blending of genres that have garnered her international recognition. Born in the west London suburb of Hammersmith, Estelle grew up in a religious and musical family – her mother was particularly fond of playing American and African spiritual music. With this solid musical background, Estelle began to sing at an early age. However it was her uncle’s decision to introduce her to hip-hop that had the most profound influence on young Estelle. Before long, she was blending her musical influences into her own style, playing in small R&B clubs in and around London. Estelle is nothing if not ambitious. After some years of refining her sound and collaborating with some of the most talented artists, both in the US and the UK, Estelle released her debut album, The 18th Day, in 2004. Despite reaching number 35 in the UK charts, the album was not the breakthrough she was looking for, and it wasn’t until four years later that Estelle found her success. A chance encounter with Kanye West in 2000 paid off some years later when the single ‘American Boy’, featuring guest vocals from the American rapper/producer, was picked up by radio stations worldwide. The single catapulted to the number one spot in the UK, was nominated for ‘Song of the Year’ at the 2008 Grammy Awards, and came in at number seven on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the year’s best songs. The album containing the single, Shine, was certified gold by the end of the year, signalling Estelle’s arrival on the worldwide music scene. It’s Estelle’s blending of both R&B and hip-hop that makes her special. Although she sings with the smooth sultriness expected of an R&B singer, she often rhymes when she does so, crossing into hip-hop effortlessly in ways reminiscent of one of her idols, Missy Elliot. Estelle moves within the confines of very American genres in a quintessentially English way, writing about themes relevant to her life and her upbringing. Her ability to attract quality musicians looking to collaborate with the up-and-coming star has become a selling point, and in 2009 Estelle worked with a host of prominent musicians, including Busta Rhymes, David Guetta and Mr Hudson. She released her third album, All of Me, earlier this year and is currently working hard to support it. Her touring has taken her throughout Europe and the US, and her reviews so far have been overwhelmingly positive. Expect an energetic and polished show from one of the UK’s rising stars. Andy Rugg

Tivoli; 19:00; 95kr Based in Copenhagen, the trio offer a simplistic, slow-evolving style of indie-electro. Receiving major air play on P3 with dance tunes such as ‘Trouble Is’, their sound is rather generic and their songs are mundane and uninspiring. The hook for their concert tonight is the prospect of hearing some of the material from the latest record live. But don’t be swayed by the hype of the posters dotted around town and the majestic venue that is Tivoli. If you were to wake up to even their latest tunes in the morning you’d most likely press the snoo,ze button on your radio alarm clock.

ergen-based Kings of Convenience gave the crowd at Store Vega on Sunday night a concert to remember with a virtuoso performance that saw them play many of their more well-known tunes off their three studio albums. The first of two sold-out concerts in Vega saw the cheery Erlend Øye and Eirik Glambek Bøe (also of indie band The Whitest Boy Alive) set the stage alight with their flamboyant intermeshing of intricate acoustic guitar melodies and soothing, ethereal vocals, set off by light-hearted, comical moments between songs. It was evident from the onset that the indie-pop duo were performing with the rather specific purpose of enjoying themselves and spreading this enjoyment to those present. Tunes such as ‘Toxic Girl’, ‘Homesick’ and the contemplative ‘Cayman Islands’

Store Vega; 20:00; 180kr The offspring of the singersongwriter Jannis Noya Makrigiannis’s musings, the desolate, orchestral-based soundscapes created by the ever-changing cast of musicians are inspired by myriad music traditions – from Greek folk music through to traditional Indonesian instrumentation. Possibly Denmark’s most original export, the release of the album Rhine Gold (2012) has created a media storm – especially on the back of the hysteria created by his 2007 debut Burn The Flag. After several warm-up gigs at smaller venues, tickets for this show are going quickly.

Den Grå Hal; 21:00; 170kr A part of Copenhagen’s burgeoning electro-indie scene, the fresh-faced four-piece are the creators of some of Denmark’s most catchy underground electro-indie mixes. Sharply defined by their atmospheric blend of danceable rhythms, crisp keyboard sequences and pulsating electro-bleeps, their music is naturally made for the stage. Their new album, Konkylie (2011), has been warmly received by the national music press. With a major following, and the fact that they’ll be joined by ‘special guests’ at tonight’s show, this will most likely sell out.

Lille Vega; 20:00; 120kr Hailing from Copenhagen, the four-bit indie-rock band are on the rise with their ambitious, buoyant, Kinks-flavoured brand of surf-rock. Catchy guitar hooks, gripping Ray Davies-tinged vocals and pervasive rhythmic backdrops: put them together and the quartet havehasall the makings of a great indie-rock band. Making their debut at one of Copenhagen’s top venues, the group are finally making strides on the Danish music scene – on the back-end of what has practically been a global tour; from Seattle through to Budapest. Hits like ‘Johnny And I’ are sure to set the dance-floor alight.

Loppen; 21:00; 100kr Emerging from London’s highly competitive indie-pop scene, the sextet made their name on the back of a series of single releases from their debut Reservoir (2009), including the softsounding ‘Drowning Men’ and the warming ‘I’m A Pilot’. Tapping into a similar soundscape to other folksy artists such as Belle & Sebastian and Arcade Fire, their elegant-sounding folk pop gained a cult following after their appearance at the SXSW Festival. The release Rooms Filled With Light (2012) has once again put the group in the spotlight, thanks to a strong compilation of fantastical folk-rock tracks.

There will also be a glimpse of some of the material that will feature on her third album, to be released later this year. Ever since he was old enough to put dirt in his mouth, Erik B Duckert has been attracted to the ground level and below. The attraction of the underground, he says, is that: “When you’re looking at a city from its gutters, you see both the faeces and the silk.” His favourite sewers are those of Copenhagen and in particular those of Nørrebro and Amager, but any place where trash is tossed and skirts are worn, he will want to rest his eyes and say his piece.

In 2006, the city was given 200 cherry trees by a Japanese businessman, Seiichi Takaki, to celebrate the 200th birthday of HC Andersen. To celebrate the breath-taking cherry blossoms that bloom in the spring, the Copenhagen Sakura Festival Committee was founded in 2008. Once safely inside the kiosk, Kristian is rung up by a friend. He has just spent a day with a monster. Kristian’s friend recently learned that his ex’s new partner has been molesting his two kids over a period of time. Today the beast got convicted: 60 days in the pen and a 15,000 kroner fine. Outraged we go to the friend’s flat, where he and his girlfriend are trying to digest the outcome. The stereo is pounding with heavy metal and large shots of schnapps fly across the table. “I would take a bat and pound his genitals into a bloody pulp; I wouldn’t be able to stop myself,” Kristian says and bites his jaw. “I felt like that at first,” the friend concurs. “But it’s over. When I saw him in the courtroom today it was obvious. He is completely destroyed. Smashing his kneecaps wouldn’t bring any more suffering to his life, and it definitely wouldn’t bring any more joy into mine. I’ve been down that road. You might think revenge is sweet, but it’s hollow and empty.” I manage to sneak the lion’s share of my shots into Kristian’s glass, and when we stumble out of the flat a couple of hours later he is looking rather crossed-eyed. KRISTIAN BUST

Friday the 13th THE SETTING SUN is still strong, but dark clouds lurk on the horizon. It’s Friday the 13th and I’m on my bike crossing Amagerfælled. I’m on my way to meet my friend and photographer Kristian Bust. His message on my phone was short: “I want to find Jason!” Kristian knows almost everyone worth knowing in Copenhagen, and if he says that the murdering monster that spawned a whole array of gory horror films is in town, it’s probably true. But do you really want to find him? Until recently the bike trail at Amagerfælled actually wouldn’t be a bad place to start looking. Supposedly they’ve locked him up now, but for 23 years these vast commons, which are only a ten-minute bike ride from City Hall, were the hunting grounds of Denmark’s very own psycho killer: The Amager Man. I feel the shadows getting longer and pedal a little faster. We meet up by the wooden tables outside Harbo Bar on Blågårdsgade in Nørrebro. “So where is ‘Jason’?” I ask. “Everywhere,” Kristian replies, but before he has time to elaborate, the dark clouds above let go of a solid shower. We skip the bar and make for the kiosk by Blågårds Plads. There’s always a dry nook for a street nip in Nørrebro. JUST THE NAMES are enough to send some people into a tizzy, if not a feeding frenzy: Chin Copenhagen, Apóstrophe, Dansk, Fred Perry, Tiger of Sweden, all at major discount. So what if the goods are, well, something a little less than brand new? So are all the things in your closet. And who will know, anyway? As sure as the seasons change spring and autumn that is – Designer Forum will open the floodgates to those who feed on what the French call ‘le reste’: leftovers, but very delicious ones at that. If you’ve ever worked in retail, you know that it costs more to send things back than it does to offer them at deep discount, and so some of the highend items that didn’t fly off the rack or shelves in their first outing are now available to rummage through and snag, from April 27- 29. One man’s (yes, there will be items available for men as well) poison is another person’s pleasure, so with 40-80 percent off high-end goods, you can’t miss. And if for some incomprehensible reason you get bored, or have to console yourself because you missed that cute black chiffon-y thing from Venus De Milo that flew away when a more discerning and aggressive shopper snatched it away just seconds before you made your move, you can top off the entire event with brunch at the Forum itself, on Sunday, at Café Forum. For shoestring budgeters, some food samples will be floating around: Coca-Cola Light, Glaceau Vitamin Water, Kips Chips.

Kids teach kids to draw NEW Rødovre Bibliotek, Rødovre Parkvej 140, Rødovre; Sat 10:0014:00; free adm; www.rdb.dk Hellerup Art School visits the library and teaches other kids how to draw, paint and make different graphic expressions. They will also tell you about the art school, so if you get a taste for it, you might consider it yourself. All kids can join and all you have to do is bring an open mind and you will go home with your own artwork. MSØ Make paper dolls NEW Jægersborg Bibliotek, Smakkegårdsvej 112, Gentofte; Sat 11:0013:00; free adm; www.genbib.dk If you’re a fan of pretty paper dolls you can dress up and play with, this is a chance to learn how to make your own. The first sheet-made paper dolls came out in Denmark in 1888, and since then have been a great homemade or bought toy for many kids. MSØ Story time Books & Company, Sofievej 1, 2900 Hellerup; Tue mornings 09:30-10:00; free adm; www. booksandcompany.dk Every Tuesday morning, storyteller Sara Albers performs stories, poems, and finger plays. She entertains, inspires and captivates kids’ imaginations, making Tuesday mornings a magical experience for all. SA

Can’t see this lot getting in your way for that little black number with your name on it

Happy hunting is what women always say to each other when they are about to embark on a shopping spree, and Designer Forum once more will be a great place to sharpen your skills, wield your weaponry. Smilingly edge aside that cute young girl who will look better than you in the trendy, cleverly cut item from Vesterboro’s Kyoto, but get it nevertheless. Pay no attention to the well-groomed young men looking for new duds: they won’t be interested in you anyway (probably more in each other) and besides, you’re on a mission here, and it’s not just clothing. Skagen (watches) will be up for grabs. Glasses by Kaiser Eyewear. And shoes: high stepping ones from BB Shoe, Gardenia/Shoe Biz, or Post Footwear, and sneakers from Converse. In fact, maybe you should make Converse your first stop so you can scoot around in comfort. Designer Forum is on every fashionista and maven’s must-do list; it’s

also featured in numerous tourist promotional guidebooks, so the competition from professionals will be fierce. But the Forum, even if crowded – beats a small stuffy dressing room, though it may have the aura of a factory warehouse with rows and rows of clothing displayed on stand-alone racks. Friday is a special VIP night where you will be among the first – for the upgraded fee of 220kr – to preview and view with a bit of exclusivity, as the number allowed inside will be a mere 2,000 people. Tickets are available at the door on Saturday and Sunday, but not on Friday, or they can be ordered online. Topping off the list of available services, a make-up artist will be practicing makeovers on Sunday, near the Bazar magazine stand – your face is one area you can’t cover up with designer items. BY JESSICA O’SULLIVAN

IN AUSTRALIA there’s nothing we like better than making fun of our lesser-known cousins, and no, I’m not talking about Tasmania. The rivalry between the Aussies and the Kiwis has always been fierce. Despite our similar ways, we take great delight in witnessing the downfall of one another, not only in sport but also in cooking. Pavlova has been the topic of decade-long fights between us and the Kiwis. They claim they invented it, and quite frankly, we think they’re full of it. A meringue-based dessert; Pavlova was named after the Russian ballet dancer Anna Pavlova. This notoriously difficultto-master dessert is believed to

have been created in honour of Pavlova during one of her tours of Australia and New Zealand during the 1920s. Formal research tends to favour the Kiwis, but us Australians never go down without a fight. Some say the dish was created by a chef in New Zealand in 1926, while other sources credit an Australian writer who published the recipe that same year. Whilst we may never know for sure who invented it, one thing that is certain is that this dessert is super tasty. Sure it may not be the easiest recipe to get right, but the end result is worth it – especially when you consider how fantastic it looks once it is completed.

Restaurant Kiin Kiin Guldbergsgade 21, Cph N; 3535 7535; four-course menu 450kr, seven-course 775kr (with wine menu 1450kr); www.kiin.dk There are only two Thai restaurants in the whole world that have been awarded a Michelin star. One of them is in London, the other one is Kiin Kiin, which you’ll find in the heart of Nørrebro. And it’s well deserved. Kiin Kiin isn’t just a restaurant, it’s an experience, a place where every little detail is thought through. PDR Reinwald’s Farvergade 15, 1463 Cph K; open Mon-Sat 14:00-24:00 (kitchen closes at 22:00); 3391 8289; five-course menu with wine 850kr, other dishes 75215kr; www.reinwalds.dk Serving lunch and dinner, a director’s script-length of choices confronts you at Reinwald’s. It’s a who’s who of classic French and French-inspired Danish dishes as well as a monthly set menu. Any chef would be proud of this. SC 1. th. Herluf Gade 9, Cph K; 3393 5770, 1th@1th.dk; 1,250kr per person; www.1th.dk 1. th. is a gourmet restaurant with a twist. Tucked away behind a hard-to-find door on the first floor to the right of a typical Copenhagen apartment, the restaurant is based around the concept of the dinner party with guests stepping into what appears to be a private apartment and then being utterly spoilt by their hosts. The monthly set menu costs 1,250kr and has a whopping ten courses, and you can tell them in advance of any food quirks you might have and they will personalise the menu for you. Terrific food, friendly and attentive service and a unique setting. CS

Cap Horn Nyhavn 21, Cph K; open Mon-Fri 10:00-00:00, Sat-Sun 09:00-00:00; 3312 8504; starters from 99kr, main courses from 139kr, desserts from 39kr; see www.caphorn.dk for special events Nyhavn, the old harbour, is an idyllic area of magic and hygge what the Danes like to say when referring to anything that is cosy, charming, or delightful: all qualities Cap Horn has in abundance. Its simple menu boasts a fine selection of organic, homemade Danish fare, with a touch of seasonal influence. There were two highlights: the veal, pumpkin, mushrooms and potatoes with amazing truffle sauce (a “best ever veal experience”) and the chocolate cake (“Oh My God”), which was possibly the best chocolate cake ever! MM BioMio Halmtorvet 19, 1700 Cph V; open daily 12:00-24:00 (later Fri and Sat), kitchen open 12:00-22:00; 3331 2000; starters 75kr, mains 135kr; www. biomio.dk Located in an old warehouse next to trendy Kødbyen, Bio Mio is certainly unusual for conservative Copenhagen. It’s stylish without being pretentious, fast enough that you don’t go crazy waiting for food, and loud enough that you can make a racket without anyone raising an eyebrow. ish the sugar. Egg whites should now be glossy stiff peaks. Sprinkle corn starch and vinegar on the meringue and fold in gently with plastic spatula. Add vanilla and gently fold mixture again. Gently spread mixture in the circle on the foil to make a circular base. Make sure the edges are slightly higher then the centre so you have a very slight well in the middle. Bake for about 75 minutes or until it goes a very pale, pinkish egg shell colour. Turn oven off and leave door slightly ajar to let it cool completely. As it cools, it will crack slightly. Just before serving, take out of oven, remove gently from foil and place on plate. Whip the cream with vanilla extract until it forms peaks. Prepare sliced fruit. Gently spread cream on top of meringue with a spatula and arrange the fruit on top.

With such a wide choice, it’s a great place to go as a group who can’t agree on a choice of cuisine. On our visit our favourites were the Dim Sums - particularly the steamed pork dumplings that are perfectly fluffy. There are also dumplings cooked in the Austrian way and delicious goulash among the many different servings to be had. JHW The Dubliner Amagertorv 5, Strøget, 1160 Cph K; Opening Hours: Mon-Sun 10:00-late This pub is never quiet. It’s the perfect place for sports fans to mingle, or for live music which it provides every day. BH The Globe Nørregade 43-45, 1165 Cph K; Opening hours vary, until 03:00 Fri-Sat Friendly service and good value food make this the perfect city pub, and it’s difficult to know where to enjoy your pint given the number of options. If it’s company you want, you might try the main bar, or a private function, the second bar; seating-wise pull up a high chair, relax on cushioned benches or lord it as a bishop for the evening; or go genteel in the library - a great place to cheat in the fortnightly quiz, the longest running in the city. THE FRONT OF Les Trois Cochons is humble and unassuming. Upon entering, the rough and tumble of the street is muted by the voice of Edit Piaf and other classics of French music coming gently from the speakers, and you are enveloped by the cosy atmosphere. The interior is welldesigned, and the walls and furniture underline the simple elegance of this restaurant. But it’s just about the food and the wine, it’s about the complete experience of the French-inspired theme that Les Trois Cochons delivers in a fantastic manner. The only thing I could possibly complain about was a party of about 20 people who drowned out the music with their conversation – which is no complaint at all. Some sparkling white wine began our evening and helped us unwind while we waited for the food, along with an aperitif: the house ‘Leverpostej’ with plums poached in red wine with spices (cinnamon, vanilla, aniseed). They were incredibly smooth and delicious. And as we enjoyed the bubbles and the plums, munching on bread with the pâté, we took in the dimly-lit restaurant and relaxed to the sounds of French golden oldies. And that was just the beginning. Everything else, the crème de la crème, comes in threes. The starters, the main and even – oh my taste buds! – the desserts. It should be mentioned that the whole meal is “shared” by the table, so, especially with the main, it’s good to agree beforehand what you’d prefer. A pan filled with the meal of your choice is put on the table, and you then transfer it to your own plate, depending on how much you want. It’s a clever ‘Goldilocks’ idea that avoids over and understuffing the patrons, by allowing them to pick the amount of food they want to eat. The starters and desserts are the same for all guests; the only flexible item on the menu is the main course, which can be chosen from the three currently available: a choice of fish, chicken or beef (the mains change, of course, more or less monthly). They are all accompanied by mashed potatoes (swimming in melted butter) and French beans. I had the pleasure of tasting the Rooster baked with truffles and roasted parsnips in dark sauce, sprinkled with parsley. It was full of flavours and textures that mixed well together – the soft, slightly sweet chicken, the crunchy beans and the buttery potatoes. That’s one mouth-watering, fantastic meal in itself, accompanied by a glass of light, red Morgon wine. Wine is also excellent with the starters

The restaurant employs a ‘Goldilocks’ philosophy. No, that doesn’t mean the size of their chairs varies, just the amount you serve yourself

and desserts, as well as with a cheese plate (three different French cheeses, which can be purchased separately for 75 kroner). The three starters were varied but complemented each other well in terms of flavours. The cooks at Les Trois Cochons really are extravagant and go all the way to create delicious food. Just imagine: Tiny fish cutlets with radish, anchovies and capers, Baby potatoes in mayonnaise on a bed of fresh spinach leaves sprinkled with potato crisps, and a Rabbit riette with pickles and salad in a sauce of sharp mustard. All of this was washed down

with white wine. See, even the starter was incredible. The colours, textures and, first and foremost, the taste was great. It was amazing, but not overwhelming, preparing the taste buds for the treat that is the main course. It’s no surprise, therefore, as to why Les Trois Cochons is a renowned restaurant that requires booking way in advance. Since no proper meal can end without a dessert, this French restaurant offers three fantastic, French, sweet afters: Chocolate mousse with white chocolate cookies; a Raspberry sorbet with (Italian, gasp!)

meringue that just explodes with sharp freshness; and last, but definitely not least Crème brûlée. It was simply creamy heaven: crisp on the top, but so delicate under that it just melted in the mouth. Les Trois Cochons is without a question a brilliant place for any food-lover. It has a great idea behind it, and an atmosphere that allows a bit of relaxed forgetfulness and gets you positively drunk with food.

27 April - 3 May 2012

New this Week The Lady (11) Dir: Luc Besson; Fra/UK drama, 2012, 135 mins; Michelle Yeoh, David Thewlis, Jonathan Woodhouse The Lady is the extraordinary story of Aung San Suu Kyi and her husband, Michael Aris. It is also the epic story of the peaceful quest of the woman who is at the core of Burma’s democracy movement. Besson does draw the best out of his two leads, and the subject is an extraordinary woman. So why is it such an ordinary film? MH

Book Your Tickets Into the Abyss (15) Dir: Werner Herzog; US director, 2011, 107 mins; Werner Herzog, Jason Burkett, Michael Perry Conversations with death row inmate Michael Perry and those affacted by his crime serve as an examination of why people - and the state - kill. MH

The Ides of March (3) Dir: George Clooney; US drama, 2011, 101 mins; Geore Clooney, Ryan Gosling, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Paul Giamatti Initially, the film seems too sleek. But then the film takes a few unexpected turns, which creates intriguing conflicts. LD

Dir: Steve McQueen; UK drama, 2011, 101 mins; Michael, Carey Mulligan, Nicole Beharie Shame is a claustrophobic drama of intensity and urgency. It will make any recent films seem trivial and tame, a strange and unique beast indeed. It’s mature drama, bravely tackling complicated subject matter for those looking to experience something different. It’s original, visceral and disquieting - in the

Dir: Madonna; US drama, 2012, 120 mins; Abbie Cornish, Andrea Riseborough, James D’Arcy W.E.is Madonna’s second attampt at filmmaking and, even if it’s visually and technically better than the previous one, it’s still miles away from being a genuinely good piece of cinema. DC

Dir: Phyllida Lloyed; UK/ Fra drama, 2012, 105 mins; Meryl Streep, Jim Broadbent, Olivia Colman, Richard E Grant From the first frame there’s a growing awareness that our perceptions of this woman are being gently and skilfully manipulated by director Phyllida Lloyd and screenwriter Abi Morgan, so much so that regardless of your political persuasion you’d have to be resolutely stubborn or emotionally retarded in failing to be moved by this biopic. Nevertheless, Margaret Thatcher is full blooded; she lives and breathes before your eyes. MW

Dir: John Madden; UK dramady, 2012, 124 mins; Judy Dench, Bill Nighy, Maggie Smith, Tom Wilkinson We are supossed to be dazzled by the cleverness of the idea, as each accomplishment is revealed along with the realisation of what must have taken place. Still, overal it’s an entertaining experience. LD

Dir: Gary Ross; US sci-fi, 2012, 142 mins; Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson Ross has successfully dissected and expanded the book and produced something that works as a film - so long as you’re not too precious about its origins. MH

way only cinema can be. MW

Avoid like the Plague Haywire (15) Dir: Steven Soderbergh; US action, 2011, 93 mins; Gina Carano, Ewan McGregor, Michael Fassbender Sadly, this film has come too soon for Carano, who undoubtly has promise. She needs to fine-tune her delivery, learn her craft in a few supporting parts, and her break will come in a superhero flick. And as for Soderbergh, this film came along too late. Five years ago, it would have been slick and cool and we would all been praising a work of ‘minimalista azione’. BH

Battleship (15) Dir: Peter Berg; US sci-fi action, 2012, 130 mins; Alexander Skarsgård, Brooklyn Decker, Liam Neeson This film is terribly clichéd, the characters are generally underdeveloped, the acting was bad, and there basically is no storyline. LD

Iron Sky (15) Dir: Timo Vuorensolas; Fin/ Aus/Ger action/com, 2012, 93 mins; Julia Dietze, Götz Otto, Christopher Kirby, Peta Sergeant Iron Sky has proved that the studio system has its uses; this script would likely have seen a drafts before getting greenlit. As it is, Vuorensolas goosestepped out of obsecurity and right into the cine-scheisse. Not to knock the monumental achievement of assembling this huge production, but just because you can, doesn’t necessarily mean you should. MW

Also Playing American Pie (7) Dir: Jon Hurwitz; US comedy, 2012, 110 mins; Jason Biggs, Alyson Hannigan, Seann William Scott The last serving of pie may not be the best, but it certainly is tasty in its own right and a worthy clinger to a fantastic (in a manner of speaking) series of films. KE

The Descendants (7) Dir: Alexander Payne; US dramedy, 2011, 115 mins; Geore Clooney, Shailene Woodley, Amara Miller Despite the nominations, Clooney delivers a performance we’ve seen many times before. LD

We Need to Talk About Kevin (7) Dir: Lynne Ramsay; UK, US drama, 2011, 112 mins; Tilda Swinton, John C Reilly, Ezra Miller Kevin’s mother struggles to love her strange child, despite the increasingly vicious things he says and does as he grows up. But Kevin is just getting started, and his final act will be beyond anything anyone imagined. It’s not an easy story to tell, but the filmmakers do it well. MH

The Artist (3) Dir: Michel Hazanavicius; Fra/Bel dramedy, 2011, 100 mins; Jean Dujardin, Bernice Bejo, John Goodman, James Cromwell It’s difficult to see why this film is being championed so highly. Many will defend it by claiming that detractors are put off by a lack of colour, dialogue, explosions and other contemporary mainstays. But really their efforts would be better spent lauding Chaplin’s Modern Times or Murnau’s Sunrise. MW

Chronicle (15) Dir: Josh Trank; US sci-fi action, 2012, 83 mins; Dane DeHaan, Michael B Jordan, Michael Kelly, Alex Russell Three high school students make an incredible discovery, giving them superpowers. As they learn to control their abilities and use them to their advantage, their lives start to spin out of control, and their darker sides begin to take over. This film puts a fresh spin on the superhero origin story, a tale Hollywood spins again and again. MH

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (3) Dir: John Madden; UK dramady, 2012, 124 mins; Judy Dench, Bill Nighy, Maggie Smith, Tom Wilkinson A dissapointingly familiar form with surprisingly charming content. Take your mum. MW

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (11) Dir: Stephen Daldry; US drama, 2011, 129 mins; Tom Hanks, Sandra Bullock, Thomas Horn If you’re a moviegoer who enjoys having your heartstring plucked like a bluegrass banjo, this is the king of movie you will be gushing over this while drinking double mocha non-fat cappuccinos with your friends. The Reluctant Revolutionary

spor t THE W OF EEK

Dr2, Wed 23:00

HOW INVOLVED should a documentarist be in their narrative? After all, you can bill yourself as an investigative reporter and become the star. Donal Macintyre and Nick Broomfield are good examples – but at the same time they alienate part of their audience by irritating them with their self-righteousness. The subtler approach is to remain, as much as possible, off-camera. Suggest things to your subjects, but let them do the work. In The Reluctant Revolutionary (DR2, Wed 23:00), Sean McAllister gives us a masterclass in manipulation as we follow Kais, a Yemenese tour guide, through the Arab Spring and watch as his pro-governmental sentiments dissolve. The Hollywood Reporter hailed its “breathless pace, sense of

black humor and great central character”, while The Huffington Post felt that “McAllister is either a fool or brave or possibly both” because what “he captures is extraordinary access conventional media flinch from”. From a reluctant revolter to a reluctant sperm donor, or is he? In The Donor Unknown (DR2, Sat 20:00), we meet Jeffrey, 52, a bachelor who lives with four dogs and a pigeon. Thirty years ago he donated sperm with the same amount of emotional involvement that most of us invest in taking our bottles back. But yet he has kids, possibly hundreds of them, and now many are seeking him out. Should he come clean that he helped conceive them while looking at a porn mag? One person who never owned up was Max Mallowan, the arche-

ologist husband of Agatha Christie (DRK, Thu 21:00). She believed the older she got, the more interested he became. Nothing to do with the millions of books she sold then (when she died, he married his mistress – flaming hell, did Hercule Poirot ever investigate?). Elsewhere, Senna is an acclaimed doc about the peerless F1 DR2, Wed 23:00 The Reluctant Revolutionary driver who tragically died at the age of 34; Suburgatory (TV2 Zulu, Tue 20:55) is a new series about life in the suburbs that has a creditable 70 on Metacritic, but how similar is it to Desperate Housewives and series of that ilk; and there’s another chance to see The Promise (SV1, Wed 22:00), an intriguing fourparter set in Israel and Palestine, from the 1940s to the modern day.
