BRICKS, tiles, cement or wood? It sounds like a question for the three little pigs, but which materials would you use to build a house? Well, the widely-acclaimed star architect Wang Shu, whose work is being featured this spring as part of Louisiana’s exhibition series The Architect’s Studio, rarely chooses the easy option. In his bid to raise awareness of his country’s architecture, he builds extraordinary houses in his homeland by reusing material taken from buildings that have been torn down by the government.
It is part of his bid to counter globalisation and escape from Western influences, which is why he co-founded the Amateur Architecture Studio in 1998 with his wife Lu Wenyu in Hangzhou. The studio has gone on to design many significant 21st century Chinese buildings such as the Ningbo Museum and the China Art Academy. In 2012 Wang was awarded the Pritzker Prize for universal and timeless architecture that is deeply connected to China’s tradition and culture. The Architect’s Studio is dedicated to architects fighting globalisation, and the line-up also includes Alejandro Aravena and Tatiana Bilbao. As well as his choice of material, Wang is well known for his spontaneity, emphasis on local culture and tradition, and critical and experimental style.

The result, Nephews, is an exhibition of 26 photographs that charts the development of the boys’ ten-year journey into manhood. SET ON the eve of Winston Churchill’s defeat in the 1945 General Election, a momentous day in British history – one of several elephants in the room that pervade the first season of the epic Netflix series The Crown – Patrick Marber’s erotic reworking of August Strindberg’s naturalistic play After Miss Julie is a compelling psychological drama and examination of class. In an English country house, the privileged Miss Julie (Maria Winther Nørgaard) strides into the servants’ quarter, a section of the house emancipated (temporarily at least) by Labour’s landslide victory, and starts to flirt with
the chauffeur (Benjamin Stender). His fiancee, a housemaid (Johanne Wang-Holm), watches on as the characters face up to a new world order in which the toffs and the gents won’t necessarily be on top anymore – both in the boardroom and the bedroom. While Stender is well known to That Theatre audiences thanks to his Reumert-winning performance in The Woman in Black and energetic turn in Marathon, director Ian Burns is this time around equally excited about Nørgaard. The 25-year-old Danish actress’s “rare ability” reminds him of Natalie Wood and a young Elizabeth Taylor, he told INOUT. “I saw her one-woman show at BådTeatret and forgot where I was because she was so good,” he said. “She is a talent to watch. And her chemistry with Benjamin is electric.” Sound like we’ve got a live one.

arranged by music schools all over Denmark with the intention of trying to redress the balance of the sexes in Danish music and encourage girls to play. What makes Vinterjazz such a unique musical event is that there is a coming together on a national level between venues and concert promoters, musicians and members of the public, larger cities and outlying areas – a national initiative that is created and takes place locally. Concerts have been arranged at exciting and unusual venues such as Forbrændingen in Albertslund, Kastelskirken Copenhagen, and the Ordrupgaard art gallery in Charlottenlund. First and foremost, Vinterjazz is a club festival to kick-start the season for the many jazz clubs that provide an environment in which jazz can develop and thrive all the year round.

IT WAS the summer of ‘69 … Bryan Adams sang in ‘84, and those really were the days for the Canadian rocker, a breath of fresh air for fans of the genre who had become weary of the big hair bands. But by the summer of ’91 the hatemail had started to flow in his direction, fuelled by a song that refused to die that quickly made Adams one of the most famous music stars in the world. His ballad ‘(Everything I Do) I Do It for You’, the main song for blockbuster Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, remained #1 in the UK single charts for 16 weeks. More hits followed, but they didn’t exactly endear him to fans still jaded
with his sound – cheesy singles like ‘The Only Thing That Looks Good On Me’ didn’t help much, with either gender – and the record companies gave up on promoting his work mid-decade to switch their attention to the likes of Britpop. Today, 35 years into his career, multiple awards and more than 100 million sold albums later, Adams continues to rock. In 2015, he released Get up, his 13th album, with the help of Jeff Lynne, the head of the Electric Light Orchestra who has previously produced records for Joe Cocker, Aerosmith and The Beatles, and it’s undoubtedly a more refined sound than the one Adams achieved two decades ago. Despite his successful music career, Adams has remained a down-to-earth guy, and there aren’t many who can say that. He does a lot for charity and is a committed family man.

The original band returned after a lengthy hiatus in 2002, by which time Sawatzki had killed himself after getting cancer and Wobker had to be rescued from a Buddhist monastery in Thailand. After three and a half years in Denmark, US ambassador Rufus Gifford has left these shores, spending an action-packed day on January 16 in which he officially said goodbye to Queen Margrethe, performed some voluntary work at a Copenhagen homeless shelter and then attended his own farewell soiree at City Hall. Among those bidding him bon voyage were Copenhagen Lord Mayor Frank Jensen (left) and ICC president Hasse Ferrold (right), who is also pictured with Gifford’s husband, Dr Stephen DeVincent. Gifford took the opportunity at City Hall, the venue of his October 2015 marriage to DeVincent, to say that the US election was “a game-changer” that has left him “seriously considering” running for office
The St Andrew Society of Denmark celebrated Burns Night early this year with a supper event at Cirkel-Ordenen in Frederiksberg on January 21. Guests put on their kilts to feast on Scotch broth and haggis, sink a few wee drams and listen to the music of Angus Rollo. Society president Kaj Larssen was at hand to preside over the proceedings, which included ‘the immortal memory’ address, which this year was given by Simon C Mears, the president of the St George Society Denmark. Fear not if you missed out, as the Dubliner pub (Amagertorv 5, Cph K) is hosting its own Burns Night celebration on the actual day itself, Thursday January 26. It starts at 19:30 and includes whiskey tasting, haggis, neeps and tatties, a piper and a live show by Angus Rollo (tickets: 180 kroner)

PICK OF THE WEEK
CLOSE half an eye and regard this new series as a sequel to Downton Abbey, resuming the action 15 years later in a London hotel during World War II. Made by ITV, they’re presumably using the same wardrobe. Maggie Smith’s dead of course, but the rich and beautiful are still enjoying their music, cocktails and intrigue in luxurious, art déco settings,
Not much for Lady Mary to get excited about
WE’VE GOT new central characters in two popular returning series this month. Jack has Bauered out of 24: Legacy (3+, Feb 6, 22:00) to make way for new blood, but will it reduce the blood-letting? And David Morrissey and Keeley Hawes have taken over careless parent responsibilities in The Missing, which returns with the same detectives, but not James Nesbitt, who has got Cold Feet. SVT4, Feb 1-14, 23:00 The Missing
BASED ON Louise Doughty’s 2013 novel, the BBC’s new fourepisode miniseries is a provocative thriller about a middle-aged scientist, played by Emily Watson, having a secret affair with a mysterious man (Ben Chaplin). Feminists are thrilled apparently. “Apple Tree Yard does feel like a very female thing. And that’s good. Female in a positive,
powerful, celebratory way too,” observed the Guardian. Stateside, Sneaky Pete (Metacritic: 78) has been the best rated new series so far this year. Co-created by and starring Bryan Cranston (Walt in Breaking Bad), Giovanni Ribisi plays a con-man who steals the identity of his prison cellmate and experiences family life for the first time.
One day at a Time (78), a Netflix remake of a 1975 sitcom of the same name, is also family-focused. Starring Justina Machado and 85-year-old Rita Moreno (trivia alert: she was the first to win an Oscar, Emmy, Tony and Grammy), it’s proof that single mother comedies needn’t be stale. Unfortunately The Mick (50) didn’t get the memo.
but this time with Nazism and talkies thrown into the equation. More political than Downtown, the Guardian is a fan. “There is enough gritty intrigue, enough haught, enough cloying tension and art and swishful beauty and angry little secrets to allow one to empathise with the snobs without quite condoning them,” it said. “The Halcyon was a delight: a rollicking and sexy and political delight of both style and substance.” LESLIE HAWENER

THE LESS you know about the dual-narrative drama Martha, Marcy, May, Malene the better – it made a lot of film of the year lists in 2011. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty starring Ben Stiller is more formulaic, but enjoyable. Also recommended is Dangerous Remedy, and there’s another chance to see Philomena (DR2, Feb 10, 20:00) and 12 Years a Slave (TV2, Feb 5, 21:00). (BH)
