FOLLOWING on from Maggie is a Twat, Mrs Thatch is back, this time in The Iron Lady (see G18). I’ve seen a fair number of Maggie films, and my usual complaint is they’re too short to be meaty enough, despite being normally based on one event: the boring The Long Walk to Finchley (her beginnings, Andrea Riseborough), the brilliant The Falklands Play (her defining moment, Patricia Hodge) and the risible Margaret (her demise, Lindsay Duncan). And The Iron Lady is based on her whole life ... Nevertheless, Streep is the first actress to nail the voice. It was like Hodge and Duncan purposely tried not to imitate her – either that or they were rubbish. When our Maggie is a Twat preview went online, Thatcher was debated, but with not much ferocity. It turned out most of our commenters are fans. Despite the vitriol spoken about her every day in Britain, she’s either someone you love or you hate. A current Facebook campaign wants to privatise her interment to avert the first public funeral of a
non-royal since Winston Churchill in 1965. That alone demonstrates the range of emotions. I don’t see it as that black or white. Most leftish criticism willfully forgets the number of card games the state paid trade union reps to play in the 1970s, but you also have to question some of her motives. In fact, several years after the Falklands War, she asked a friend of my brother’s what he won his medals for, and he replied: “Margaret Thatcher’s 1983 General Election Campaign.” He then went to military prison. Elsewhere, we’ve got The Tiger Lillies plays Hamlet. I’ve written a lot about that this week (see G2 and page 18 of the newspaper) because I passionately believe this is a chance you don’t want to miss. And if you’re looking for a bargain, you can’t go wrong with Danse2Go (see G3), which is offering three ballets for the discounted price of one. For just 150kr, you could end up sitting next to the city’s top opera patrons (don’t forget your crisps). And Select Shopping (see G9), which this week is brimful of details on this spring’s stock clearances - great if you don’t mind wearing last season’s fashion. Fashion tip for 2012: power dressing in suits, pussybow blouses, pearls and heavy-duty handbags will be the new black, or should we say royal blue.

The Tiger Lillies perform Hamlet
Republique, Store Scene, Østerfælled Torv 37, 2100 Cph Ø; starts Sat, ends March 2, performances Tue-Sat 20:00, returning April 21-May 12; tickets 255–350kr, billet@republique.dk; dialogue in Danish, songs in English, April-May entirely in English; www. republique.dk IT CAN GET a little tiring hearing about all the bands you should have heard of. Hardly a week goes by without more ‘hipster gods’ deigning to bless us with their presence. “If there’s one thing you need to do this weekend,” urges the preview. “It’s the laundry,” is your unspoken response. The Tiger Lillies, though, who this weekend are performing the worldwide premiere of their version of Hamlet, are the exception to the rule. The Brechtian/neo-burlesque/ gypsy cabaret outfit might be a cult band, but they have a worldwide following – which kind of means that people who see them like them, but not enough people see them. So where should you know these gypsters from, you ask. Ah, there’s the rub – or at any rate, that was the question until about a month ago. It would have led to a very long sequence of ‘Have you heard of xxxs’ that finally ended with a “yes” for the film Plunkett & Macleane, but then they appeared on The Simpsons. That’s right, on January 15, to perform their version of the theme tune at the bequest of the show’s creator, Matt Groening, who it turns out is a fan. Along with Mel Brooks, Barry Humphries, Terry Gilliam, Marc Almond (“Just brilliant and utterly fantastic! You’ll never hear more perverse and twisted as well as haunting and sorrowful songs”), Franz Ferdinand lead singer Alex Kapranos (“There is nothing else like them. Any description of them is an injustice – they are completely peerless”), and Marilyn Manson, who the band suspects based his Grotesk Burlesk Tour in 2003 on elements of their most enduring work, ‘Shockheaded Peter’. As frontman Martyn Jacques observed in a 2006 interview with the Independent: “While we’re not famous, we’re a famous people’s band.” It certainly beats a recommendation from Melody Maker. Central to the appeal of The Tiger Lillies is the eerie castrato-pitch falsetto of accordion-player Jacques, who is ably supported by Adrian Huge on drums and Adrian Stout on double bass. Once heard, it’s never forgotten, and while it will light up your day, it might

Often compared to Mozart’s The Magic Flute, it is now widely considered Strauss’s magnum opus. It’s true you’d have to be impressively well-read to appreciate all its references. But one mustn’t sit through it like a lecture as there is no great message. KRG
Fresh from appearing on The Simpsons, The Tiger Lillies are always good for an animated performance
appear in your nightmares. An opera-trained counter-tenor, Jacques spent a good part of his 20s perfecting the unusual sound living above a brothel in London’s Soho, inspired by his idol, the Belgian singer-songwriter Jacques Brel. Given the pedigree of this Grammynominated band, therefore – it’s frightening to think how many Simpsons fans googled their name last month – it’s something of a coup that they’re currently in Copenhagen awaiting their premiere on Saturday, and then later returning for a three-week run in April. The Tiger Lillies perform Hamlet is a collaborative production (conceived by Jacques, Republique’s artistic director Martin Tulinius and Hans Christian Gimbel) for which they’ve penned 20 songs (titles include ‘Mad Hamlet’, ‘The king is dead’ and ‘To be or not to be’) to glue together Republique theatre’s loosely-scripted, surreal visual tableaus that tell the story of Shakespeare’s greatest work. For this production, Hamlet has been stripped down to become a two-hour tale of “contempt, love and revenge”. It’s now just a two-family play: the king’s (Claudius, his wife Gertrude and step-son/nephew Hamlet) and the prime minister’s (Polonius, his daughter Ophelia and son Laertes).

Penned by the actors and director Barry McKenna, it takes place in a pub during a football match between England and Denmark. Confronted by a power cut, two fans (Ian Burns and Andre Jeffers) switch their attention to the lovelife of the barman (Adam Brix), teaching him how to woo his Rosalind in Shakespearean style, with a little help from the audience, which according to McKenna, is “a crucial element” in any Shakespeare play. MH
La Traviata
Ahead of approaching the Tiger Lillies to get involved in the project, Tulinius was confident the subject matter would appeal. “We saw them perform in Prague last year and then pitched the idea of Hamlet in a restaurant,” he said. “I could see immediately how it made sense to Martyn to do it. If it had been anything else, they might have said no. But so much of the content of the play – the murder, the incest etc - relates to the Tiger Lillies.” Speaking to the band last week, it’s clear they’re happy and impressed with the visual elements of the production, which as well as the actors will include a line dancer, puppets and video projections. Happier, at least, than their work on Plunkett & Macleane, which might be one of the most noteworthy appearances of their career, but was a pretty horrible experience. “It’s like we’ve spent our whole career in bad films – like they know it’s going to be bad and they ask us to appear,” said Jacques. Well, their loss is the stage’s gain, and this new version of Hamlet is your chance to discover what all the fuss is about.

novices to the ballet and please regular ballet-goers. The evening’s first piece by choreographer Flemming Flindt is based on a play by the absurdist writer Eugène Ionesco. The Lesson premiered in 1963 and begins with a young ballet student entering a gloomy dance studio. A resolute pianist leads her in before her ballet teacher appears and the lesson starts. The student is eager at first and seems to intimidate her admiring teacher with the overachieving attitude she brings to the exercises. However, as the lesson takes its course, the teacher’s fascinated adoration turns more and more into a sadistic pleasure as he demands more and more difficult – and increasingly painful – moves from the young dancer. The pianist tries to intervene, but finally the student collapses, and before the curtain falls, we hear the next student ring the studio’s door bell. What is fascinating about the piece – besides the dynamic between the three people on stage and especially the ballet teacher’s transformation from restrained to sadistic – is that it tells a story in, and also about, dance. While the ‘language’ of The Lesson can be described as close to the genre of dance theatre, where bodies are less erect, legs less elongated and feet less pointed than in classical ballet, a ballet lesson is the
content of its tale. The pianist and the ballet teacher often move in a pedestrian way with flexed legs, but what is at stake in The Lesson is the pain and pleasure gained from the sublime movements of ballet. The Lesson makes us uncannily complicit with the ballet teacher in that we long for movements on stage that seem impossible, clap the loudest at the most spectacular jumps and enjoy the ‘weightless ease’ with which it is all carried out. We do this despite the fact that we’re aware, like the dancers who choose ballet, of the ballerinas’ bloody feet, the serious health issues they often have to deal with, and the short-lived careers that end at 30-something. When the piece was performed as part of a different programme earlier this season, the Royal Danish Ballet’s artistic director, Nikolaj Hübbe, praised his ageing principal Thomas Lund in the role of the ballet teacher and insisted that the piece had to stay in the repertoire while Lund was still dancing. But Ida Praetorius’ performance as the student was also remarkable. Only in her late teens, Praetorius shows the talent for acting that the role demands. Her stage presence, which has made her shine in smaller parts throughout the season, is thrilling in The Lesson.

The Concert, its creator says, will inspire some “dreamy associations” - are you thinking what we’re thinking?
Tchaikovsky originally wrote the music for the evening’s second piece – today called the Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux – for the third act of Swan Lake. But it was never used in the final score. When George Balanchine, choreographer at the New York City Ballet, got wind that the music was found in the archives of Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre, he got hold of it and created this virtuoso pas de deux for it in 1960. From Tchaikovsky Pas de
Deux you can expect a more traditional display of classical and neoclassical ballet technique. It’s a showcase of athletic leaping, swift footwork and daring fish dives. Finally, Jerome Robbins’s The Concert is one of the few internationally successful comedic ballets and was a big hit when the Royal Danish Ballet performed it last autumn. It begins with a pianist entering the stage and beginning to play a Chopin

James Blake
Culture Box Fri 23:00; 130kr www.culture-box.dk www.jamesblakemusic.com
H
ailing from London, James Blake is a crossover dubstep producer that saunters off the beaten track, jigsawing together an eclectic blend of sombre dub-step, electro and Thom Yorke-esque elements. He’s created something of a new sub-genre as well as elevating the status of dubstep – typically known for its grimy subculture. From being a relative unknown two years ago, he has since been nominated for the Mercury Music Prize and has sold out shows across the world. He has also found fans in the form of Björk and Bon Iver, the latter whom he has now collaborated with. The buzz surrounding his name has been growing exponentially since his 2009 debut 12-inch, Air & Lack Thereof. In January 2011, Blake was announced as runner-up in BBC’s Sound of 2011 poll. Six months later, he was nominated for the 2011 Mercury Music Prize for his self-titled debut album. James Blake builds on the material released by Blake as three EPs in 2010: The Bells Sketch, CMYK and Klavierwerke. All three EPs have differing musical styles. Pitchfork noted it was “amazing” that so much material could be released in such a short period of time. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalised rating out of 100 based on reviews by mainstream critics, the album received a score of 81, based on 38 reviews, which indicates “universal acclaim”.
24 February - 1 March 2012
Long before he was one of music’s hottest wunderkinds, Blake started out taking classical piano lessons at the age of nine. “If someone said to me: ‘I’ve got this classically trained pianist who’s made dubstep,’ my first thought would probably be: ‘Hm, I’m not sure about that,’ because classically trained is almost synonymous with being uncreative, I’m afraid,” explained Blake to Pitchfork. “If you go to classical conservatories across the world, they’re probably not the sort of places where you’re going to find people who are going to blow your mind creatively.” Blake, however, manages to perfectly mix classical melodies with modern technology and has a calm voice that could sing your grandmother to sleep. He is often referred to as the “prince of dubstep”. When asked to give his definition of dubstep, Blake told Pitchfork: “There’s a very broad template, but it largely focuses on a bassline and the intricacies of drum patterns and it has an intense focus on a feeling - and I think that’s a separation from some other dance music.” After his debut on Danish soil at the Roskilde Festival last year and a recent gig at Vega, Blake now returns for a show at Culture Box. With a cracking bassline and remarkable vocals, this is a real treat for the people of Copenhagen and it is not to be missed. The last thing you probably now want to hear is that it’s a sold-out show. This is fortunately not the case. Although pre-sale tickets have sold out, there will still be a limited number available on the door so be sure to queue early. Mike Hofman

Future Islands
Loppen; 21:00; 100kr Hailing from Baltimore, Maryland, the four-bit group have found a niche in the market with their surreal brand of synthpop. A peculiar limbo between beach rock and nostalgic ‘80s electronica, Future Islands exist on a separate plane from most of the rock bands that have emerged in the past few years, with Samuel T Herring’s distinctive vocal style at the fore. Using both digital and analogue equipment, the programming behind their beats has an innocence that preserves the originality of their often beautifully composed music, which is at the very core of the band’s attraction.

nother band on their way up, The Maccabees have gradually progressed from being a mediocre indierock group to becoming one of Britain’s proudest offspring. The band made a welcome return to Copenhagen with an intimate show at Lille Vega on Sunday. With a welcoming cheer, they took their places on stage and opened with the onetwo punch of new album Given to the Wild’s opening pair ‘Child’ and ‘Feel To Follow’. Given the strength of the band’s back catalogue, the decision to start with two new tracks was surprising - the audience seemed slightly disappointed as their anticipation was met by lyrics they didn’t know. Suddenly the thrashing guitars of ‘Wall of Arms’ filled the venue and the audience exploded with satisfaction, prompting some lively sing-along moments. Lead

Lille Vega; 21:00; 120kr This four-piece Leeds-based band offer a cathartic style of rock that has been branded as indie-punk. Marrying a pack of influences together, from the Irish post-hardcore group Gallows through to the American outfit Black Lips, their signature meaty riffs and howling vocals have led to their debut record, Tough Love (2012) – that includes the hit rock-tune ‘V.E.N.O.M.’ – creating quite a stir on the rock scene.

GOING UNDERGROUND
WELL, NOW THE QUEUE is getting bigger and bigger and bigger and bigger with every second, and there must be something like a 150 female bodies writhing against ours impatiently. Dan, my American friend, who just happened to land in CPH two hours ago and who will play maracas with us onstage tomorrow, is looking at me with eyes as big as flying saucers: “Sooo … Are we the only guys...?! “Yep, you are absolutely right and that was the whole point, remember?” “Then ...You were not joking, after all?” “Nope. You bet I wasn’t. Only in Copenhagen can you get into a ladies club as a guy.” “Oh, then, it’s all about the Danish paradox you mentioned ...” And he is interrupted as once again the ladies, needlessly, start to push again. There are roughly 57 frail bodies pressed against ours, and just as many bottles randomly thrown into the Baltic sea at that exact same moment. I cannot help but behave as a gentleman: “Sorry.” Am I apologizing to myself? “Please go ahead, we shall join you in a second. No worries, see you all in there.” I have something to confess: Danish women are very beautiful and super-tired of boring good looking Danish guys and vice-versa. Being ugly or unDane (undead?) is actually an advantage here. But remember, the temptation to switch to experimental

DO YOU SOMETIMES wander around fancy gallery halls thinking: “Why does it have to be presented in such a stale environment?” As Ned Flanders’s wife from The Simpsons always says: “Won’t somebody think of the children?!” Well the stiff, pretentious art shows of Copenhagen just got challenged. Gather the kids, your friends, mum and dad hey even blind old grandma - and trot on over to the Copenhagen Art Fair for a fun-packed festival in the name of art. The team behind the Copenhagen Art Fair 2012 has gathered artists from all over Denmark and abroad to exhibit art from almost every genre of the art world. More than 170 artists will show their latest works in the fields of painting, sculpting, jewellery, fashion and crafts at the massive Falconer Centret in Frederiksberg. “My kid could paint better than that!” (There’s always some proud dad - or cynical critic - parading this claim about at an art show.) Well now he’s got the chance to prove it! The Art Fair has daily inclusive art shows for the youngest. Artist Lasse Palm Hansen will be administrating a series of workshops that will allow the children to express their artistic abilities ... in a controlled environment. And who knows, they might get spotted by a talent scout and start pulling home the bacon even before puberty. Another way to maybe secure a couple of million from a visit to the art fair involves ‘investing’ a few apt items from the family living room. Anything
The art fair is offering the kids a chance to take a seat with the artists
that might work as an alternative canvas will do. What about the old lamp from Aunt Susie, or the bathroom door maybe? Whatever you have at hand, bring it to the fair, and you might just come home with a unique piece of art and a funny story to tell. Cause this year the Copenhagen Art Fair is launching a new event to include the guests in the making of masterpieces. The event is called POSCA Live Event. It is an on-stage event where the audience hand over a piece of furniture to get it ‘artfied’ by the skilled artists of the fair. It used to be just a hideous lamp - now it’s a colourful piece of original art. Actually the clothes on our body are signed pieces of art too. They might not be unique items like the Mona Lisa, but the artistic element in fashion design is hard to deny. To celebrate the art of fashion design the fair has installed a runway, and during the event there will be reallife fashion shows: catwalk, models, the works.
Children’s Europe NEW Nationalmuseet, Ny Vestergade 10, Cph K; Sun 12:00-15:00; free adm; www.natmus.dk; ages 4-10 This is a workshop for children where they learn more about children from other European countries. The big wheel decides where you are going and who you’re visiting, be it Wendy Wellington from England or Gisela from Germany. MSØ Life and Death Statens Museum for Kunst, Sølvgade 48, Cph K; ends Sep, open Tue-Sun 10:00–17:00, Wed 10:00–18:00; free adm; www. smk.dk This exhibition has been designed to give children a framework in which to talk about life and death. By using art as a tool to approach the subject, kids can form their own opinions on the topic and not feel too confronted by what can be a difficult subject. Designed for kids aged 6-12. EM Shetland Pony Rides Kalvebod fælled, Kanalvej 2, 2770 Kastrup; Sat & Sun, 10:0016:00; ½ hour 100kr, one hour 150kr, full day 600 kr; info@ frederiksens-isheste.dk; www. frederiksens-isheste.dk The ponies are 70 to 105 cm tall so it is recommended for children up to 35kg. YF/IV
As a cherry on top you yourself can be a model. The Art Fair has invited the talented portrait artist Martin Vestergaard to perform the most classical type of street art: portraits on demand. Sit down, be very, very still and enter the immortal line of canvas-captured faces. Now, if all these different possibilities of participatory art adventures make you long for the focused anonymity and cosmic solitude found in the relation between the work of art and its viewer, fear not. The art fair will be displaying hundreds upon hundreds of different works of art, nicely distributed on three floors - plenty of material to facilitate a journey into another dimension. So, with such a variety of possibilities, no matter what your connection to art and culture-enriched entertainment might be, you’ll be sure to find something that’ll raise a brow and curve a smile at this years Copenhagen Art Fair. InOut | THE CPH POST ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE FOOD BLOG
BY SIMON COOPER
IT’S A TRUISM that these days that we tend to categorise certain foods as ones we’d simply buy and guzzle on the move, without a thought for the fact that they could ever be actually made. I’m thinking of two very different Copenhagen delicacies in particular: the Shawarma and, of course, the slightly less ubiquitous Polsevagn sausage. Whilst Polsevagns are a glorious convenience, the best party foods can actually come about through recreating the things that we just assume are (just look at the transition Pizza has made from takeaway to homemade equivalent). My flatmate actually made the sausages recently as a party’s party
piece (and they seemed to go down well with the guests), compiling the components of a classic ‘ristet’ (roast in English) sausage in bun and then serving it up with ten times the anticipation of a fix-thirsty In this week’s food blog, there are recipes for all components of the ultimate finger food, except the actual sausage and the bread. You’re allowed to buy both of these, although making the bread buns is actually quite simple. And don’t forget that most of the components keep for a long time so it’s worth making a few – particularly the dried onions - even if you’re not likely to be eating sausages every day.

One of them is in London, the other one is Kiin Kiin, which you’ll find in the heart of Nørrebro. And it’s well deserved. Kiin Kiin isn’t just a restaurant, it’s an experience, a place where every little detail is thought through. PDR 1. th. Herluf Gade 9, Cph K; 3393 5770, 1th@1th.dk; 1,250kr per person; www.1th.dk 1. th. is a gourmet restaurant with a twist. Tucked away behind a hard to-find-door on the first floor to the right of a typical Copenhagen apartment, the restaurant is based around the concept of the dinner party with guests stepping into what appears to be a private apartment and then being utterly spoilt by their hosts. The monthly set menu costs 1,250kr and has a whopping ten courses, and you can tell them in advance of any food quirks you might have and they will personalise the menu for you. Terrific food, friendly and attentive service and a unique setting. Its simple menu boasts a fine selection of organic, homemade Danish fare, with a touch of seasonal influence. There were two highlights: the veal, pumpkin, mushrooms and potatoes with amazing truffle sauce (a “best ever veal experience”) and the chocolate cake (“Oh My God”), which was possibly the best chocolate cake ever! With such a wide choice, it’s a great place to go as a group who can’t agree on a choice of cuisine. On our visit our favourites were the Dum Sums - particularly the steamed pork dumplings that are perfectly fluffy. AK Gold Prag Gothersgade 39, 1123 Cph K; open Tue-Wed 17:00-23:30; Thu-Sat 17:00-24:00; SunMon closed; appetisers from 19Kr, mains from 89kr; 3391 4712, www.goldprag.dk Gold Prag has a distinct Austrian, Hungarian, Czech and Polish heritage and lives in a time of its own. The main courses are substantial, honestly cooked and rich in taste and include Vienna schnitzel with baked new potatoes and coleslaw and chicken breast topped with apricots and cheese. There are also dumplings cooked in the Austrian way and delicious goulash among the many different servings to be had. All in all it is a rough and tumble sort of place that is elegantly primitive with charisma, heartiness and austerely excellent food that perfectly accompanies classic beers and wine. Pubs The Irish Rover Strøget 46, 1161 Cph K; Open daily 10:00-late; www. irishrover.dk You won’t find a more childfriendly pub in the whole city. From the fish and chip expat family nights at 17:00 on the last Friday of every month, to enjoying the Sunday roast (lamb, all the trimmings, just 99kr, kids portion for 58kr), they are always welcome. There’s live music Thursday-Sunday (22:00-late), the kitchen is open from 10:00 until late every day - serving a burger meal with pint for just 120kr - the pub caters to all sports fans, there’s a pool table in their back room where you can smoke, and upstairs there’s a new lounge area, which is the perfect place to relax with a view over Strøget. BH Brew Pub Vestergade 29, 1456 Cph K; restaurant open Mon-Sat 12:00-22:00, pub open MonThu 12:00-24:00, Fri-Sat 12:00-02:00, Sun closed; 3332 0060; three-course lunch menu 155kr; www.brewpub. dk The menu is full of hearty, homely, yet inventive dishes featuring inspired use of the same wonderful ingredients that go into the brewing process. AK Kennedy’s Irish Bar Gammel Kongevej 23, 1610 Cph V; Open Mon-Sun 12:0002:00 It’s not an Irish pub. Instead it’s a pub owned by Irishmen, and there’s a big difference. It’s an authentic taste of what the Emerald Isle was like in the 1980s in a pub totally devoid of concepts, themes, and DIY Irish pub kits. Drop by at 17:00 on Fridays for the traditional Irish music sessions which are rapidly gaining in popularity. BH
Southern Cross Løngangstræde 37, Cph K; open Sun-Thu 15:00-03:00, Sat-Sun 12:00-05:00; 3311 0939 This Aussie boozer is a mecca for expats and Danes, old and young, that has a lively darts board, a fortnightly quiz, a good sports-viewing atmosphere, and a happy hour that lasts to 8pm during which you can buy beers for just 30kr. JHW The Dubliner Amagertorv 5, Strøget, 1160 Cph K; Opening Hours: Mon-Sun 10:00-late This pub is never quiet. It’s the perfect place for sports fans to mingle, or for live music which it provides every day. It also serves food all day from 10am to 10pm, and diners can find peace from the music and sport on a table overlooking the walking street, or on the first floor balcony overlooking Amagertorv. BH The Globe Nørregade 43-45, 1165 Cph K; Opening hours vary, until 03:00 Fri-Sat Friendly service and good value food make this the perfect city pub, and it’s difficult to know where to enjoy your pint given the number of options. If it’s company you want, you might try the main bar, or a private function, the second bar; seating-wise pull up a high chair, relax on cushioned benches or lord it as a bishop for the evening; or go genteel in the library - a great place to cheat in the fortnightly quiz, the longest running in the city. BH The Old English Pub Vesterbrogade 2B, 1620 Cph V; Open Sun-Thu 11:30-02:30, Fri-Sat 11:30-04:30; 3332 1921; www.oldenglishpub.dk This Victorian style English pub has all the class and authenticity of a Cotswolds country pub not a Costa del Sol flea trap. Facing Tivoli’s arches and just a stone’s throw from Strøget, it’s the ideal pit-stop on a tour of the city centre. LB

continent. Traditionally, Kulfi is a frozen dish made of condensed milk with a touch of cardamoms and saffron. While it is quite common to find plenty of options for non-vegetarians in any Indian/Pakistani restaurant, India Palace boasts some very good options. One of them happens to be the famous and most rare South Indian dish, Madras masala dosa - a salty and crispy pancake-like dish that is served with spiced potatoes garnished with fresh coriander leaves. Hussain also recommended some of his restaurant’s other nonvegetarian signature dishes like Kari ghost

SUNDAY BRUNCH
COPENHAGEN is becoming a major gastronomical hub for cuisines from all over the world, and over the last decade the number of Indian/Pakistani restaurants has grown exponentially. Situated in the city centre, India Palace is one of the oldest and most frequently visited restaurants of this type, offering a wide-variety of exotic dishes from the northern parts of the subcontinent. The intricately-designed Indian wooden door, embroidered on a hand-made motif, welcomes you to the restaurant. Once inside, the life-size bronze sculptures and figurines of various Indian gods, and their curvy female companions, make you feel as if you are in one of those mythical, pre-Indus Valley civilisation times. The restaurant’s wall features delicately-etched wooden carvings belonging to the medieval era and the dimly-lit cosy atmosphere tantalises your senses, making it a pictureperfect setting for the dark winter. True to their customer-care agenda, a waiter serves you with their signature welcome drink, the Mango Cocktail (with or without alcohol). Next you’ll find yourself in a dilemma over the wide array of starters, which feature some of the most famous street foods of northern India and Pakistan. At this point we opted for the help of the always friendly waiters, who were more than happy to help us make the right choices. I settled for the Vegetarian samosa and my partner straightaway the Tandoori Chicken Pakora, a deep fried-crispy delicacy filled with halal-meat and various tropical spices. Maqsood Hussain, the co-owner of India Palace, claims his restaurant is known for its Butter chicken across northern Europe and enjoys a set of loyal customers from all walks of life. He also added that the spice level of all the dishes can be customised to suit the tolerance levels of his customers. Being a vegetarian, my main course consisted of a Tandoori naan with the Mushroom bhaji (brown button-mushrooms cooked in a spicy cream sauce) and a bowl of boiled rice. My taste buds experienced an explosion of a dozen enchanting flavours from just one bite of the crispy naan with the creamy and spicy Mushroom Bhaji. To wash it down, I ordered Murree, a famous Pakistani beer, which was recommended by Hussain. Meanwhile, my partner indulged in a serving of extra spicy Butter chicken, the Peshawari naan and a glass of red wine to wash it down with. For dessert, Hussain recommended Kulfi, an exotic ice cream native of the sub-
(halal lamb meat cooked in butter with fresh herbs and garnished with roasted almonds) and Muttonrogen josh (mildlyspiced halal mutton cooked with tomatoes and green peppers, in a spicy yoghurt sauce peppered with roasted almonds). One delightful feature of the restaurant is that all the ingredients, including the spices and herbs, are freshly prepared every day. This becomes evident in the rich aromatic essence of every dish served at India Palace. Even though all the dishes are finely tuned for the European palate, the roots of
the ground spices, herbs and other ingredients are very much authentic. India Palace also has a decent collection of both red and white wines and a variety of beers from the sub-continent. If you choose not to order à la carte, you can opt for the fabulous all-you-caneat buffet they offer every day. All of this makes India Palace a must-visit if you are craving excellent cuisine from India and Pakistan.

Steely Streep steals show as ‘Meryl’ Thatcher MARK WALKER
The Iron Lady
Dir: Phyllida Lloyd; UK/France Drama 2012, 105 mins; Meryl Streep, Jim Broadbent, Olivia Colman, Richard E Grant
Premiered February 23 Playing nationwide

rom the first frame there’s a growing awareness that our perceptions of this woman are being gently and skilfully manipulated by director Phyllida Lloyd and screenwriter Abi Morgan, so much so that regardless of your political persuasion you’d have to be resolutely stubborn or emotionally retarded in failing to be moved by this biopic. We are presented with a frail but determined elderly woman who admirably struggles on a daily basis with the fragile balance between her reality and the emotional episodes of her remembered life. Her late beloved husband remains very alive to her and she pines for her son, who now lives estranged in South Africa. In short, she is not recognisable as the woman once referred to by Soviet Captain Yuri Gavrilov as the Iron Lady. The danger in eliciting our sympathies in this way is that the inarguably inspirational drama of one woman who triumphs in a world beset by male code, will colour our perceptions of history with such a subjective retelling. The film attempts a token objectivity but frustratingly there’s little commitment to exploring her at times out-of-touch policy making, her narrow mindedness, or the untold woes she caused for working families throughout the country. While there is some disturbing footage of police brutality during the miner’s strikes and the mass casualties of Thatcher’s Falklands War, they
At the time of going press, the classification was unconfirmed, although it was a certainty that it will be unsuitable for miners are presented quite separately from the Iron Lady herself. We see her removed, lamenting these occurrences like others, via radio or television. With the Falklands conflict resolved, we then see a triumphant Thatcher at the peak of her popularity. There’s a sense throughout that the ends justified her means while glossing over everything in between. A short montage depicts her gaily waltzing with Mandela, but I could only think of Thatcher’s branding of Nelson Mandela as a “terrorist” during his struggle against apartheid - of which there is no mention. Such omissions are
not surprising, but they are a little disappointing, if only for the reason that Streep’s central performance deserves a better film. One might say that mimicry, although requiring great skill, is more technique than artistry. Unless coupled with some other-worldly brilliance it can appear an elaborate parlour trick. Michael Sheen has built his entire career on this type of work (partly due to a lack of imaginative casting), playing in three films - Tony Blair in The Deal, The Queen and The Special Relationship - followed by David Frost (Frost
vs Nixon) and later Brian Clough (The Damned United). Such roles are magnets for awards buzz. Streep herself is no stranger to the practice, having played Danish writer Karen Blixen (Out of Africa). These examples, though excellent, pale in comparison to Streep as Thatcher. It is gratifying to see any art practiced by such a rare talent in their field. Streep is bewitching, spellbinding - such adjectives flow to mind because without any of the modern wizardry we now associate with ‘film magic’, we witness an illusion at once utterly convinc-
ing and yet as old as the art itself. Streep is skin-creepingly good because she enthuses the character with invisible detail, body and soul, so that you never question the creation you are watching. It is a supremely physical performance; Streep, herself now 62, depicts Thatcher at several points in her life from mid40s to 80s (the actress playing Thatcher in her 20s lacks Streep’s subtlety) and ensures the physical nuances are as skilfully interpreted as psychological ones. Margaret Thatcher is full blooded; she lives and breathes before your eyes. This film belongs entirely to Streep.
An awful low-budget alien invasion flick Attack the Block
Dir: Joe Cornish. UK sci-fi action, 2011, 88 mins; Jodie Whittaker, John Boyega, Alex Esmail, Franz Drameh, Leeon Jones, Simon Howard
Premiered February 23 Showing Gloria and Vester Vov Vov

here are times when being a movie reviewer has to be one of the better things in life to do, and then there are times when you must watch a movie like Attack the Block. Attack the Block is market-
ed as “brought to you by the same producer of Shaun of the Dead”. If the name Nira Park is really the reason for you to see this movie, you might as well stop reading now, as this review is for those who don’t spend hours on end finding and cataloguing errors on imdb.com. Attack the Block is a story of five hoodlums who go from mugging a young nurse at knifepoint to skewering aliens with a samurai sword, all the while trying to say something poignant about race and the class system. Mind you if the movie would have been more entertaining, perhaps I would have paid more attention to these apparently genius social
satire script turns. I thought that the idea of an alien invasion film was that we as the audience are supposed to root for the humans – so why then were we constantly cheering for the fluorescent-toothed aliens? While the story is intriguing, with a new play on the whole alien invasion theme, the characterisations are thinly developed, leaving it up to the actors themselves to fill in the gaps. Unfortunately for Attack the Block, the faceless, hairy, and black as night aliens often have more personality than the human actors. Not even Nick Frost (Hot Fuzz, Paul) can fix the damage. The
one notable exception would be John Boyega as the leader Moses (how prophetic), who manages to show that perhaps he’s doing the best he can under the circumstances and just needs a chance/reason to change his ways. There is talk of Hollywood doing its own version and perhaps even writer/director Joe Cornish (one half of The Adam and Joe Show) doing his own sequel so it is possible that I’m completely missing the spaceship here. This certainly ain’t my block but maybe it could be yours.

Poulet aux Prunes
Drive (15)
Dir: Marjane Satrapi & Vincent Paronnaud; Fra drama, 2011, 90 mins; Mathieu Amalric, Edouard Baer, Maria de Medeiros Sit in the front – and don’t peer too hard – and Chicken With Plums casts an undeniable spell. It is bold, exotic and distinctive. But Satrapi and Paronnaud’s delivery is a little too sweet, like eating too much baklava, and considering that this is a film about heartbreak, despair and suicide, it does feel awfully fluffy and insubstantial at times. MH
Dir: Nicolas Winding Refn; US thriller, 2011; 95 mins; Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan Extraordinary tension ignited by brief outbursts of violence. Sheer brilliance! KE
Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance (11) Dir: Mark Neveldine & Brian Taylor; US action, 2012, 95 mins; Nicolas Cage, Idris Elba, Ciarán Hinds, Christopher Lambert It’s almost as bad as the first movie and not nearly as fun to ridicule. And in retrospect, that makes it feel like an even bigger failure. MH
This Means War (11) Dir: McG; US comedy, 2012, 98 mins; Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine, Tom Hardy, Til Schweiger This Means War is about two spies who are close friends, and how they compete over the same girl. Directed by McG, this film shifts with random bursts of energy. The script is mediocre, and the settings are off. The only pleasure comes from Bane and Captain Kirk fighting over Legally Blonde. MH
Avoid like the Plague Man on a Ledge (11) Dir: Asger Leth; US thriller, 2012; 102 mins; Sam Worthington, Elizabeth Banks, Jamie Bell The movie does not live up to its suggestive title. A clumsily made, less-than-average thriller with not much ambition and has several silly distractions for most of the film. SB
Also Playing The Inbetweeners (11) Dir: Ben Palmer; UK com, 2011, 93 mins; Simon Bird, James Buckley, Blake Harrison, Joe Thomas As with many TV to film transitions the tendency can be to adopt a more benign approach to its previous incarnation – thankfully the film retains much of its signature crudity but it does lose something by attempting to give us more. MW
J. Edgar (11) Dir: Clint Eastwood; US drama, 2011, 137 mins; Leonardo DiCaprio, Naomi Watts. Armie Hammer, Judi Dench; playing on Mon in Grand Teatret Even 137 minutes isn’t nearly enough to encompass roughly 50 years of one of the most interesting figures of the 20th century. At the same time, 137 minutes is much too long for a film that never digs deep enough to uncover anything profound. KE
The Woman in Black (15) Dir: James Watkins; UK/Can/ Swe horror/thriller, 2012, 95 min; Daniel Radcliffe, Ciarán Hinds, Janet McTeer Radcliff is taking the scare level up a notch from the Harry Potter movies with this British ghost story, where he plays a young lawyer, who travels to a remote village and discovers a vengeful ghost. Horror movie enthusiasts might not find this to be the scariest of scary movies, but if you have a less thickskinned significant other this is the movie to watch. MØ
Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol (15) Dir: Brad Bird; US action, 2011, 133 mins; Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg, Paula Patton, Vladimir Mashkov, Lea Seydoux, Michael Nyqvist You really don’t care how impossible it may be, you just want to see more.
Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (11)
My Week With Marilyn (3)
Dir. Guy Ritchie. US action, 2011, 129 mins; Robert Downey Jr, Jude Law, Noomi Rapace Ritchie gives you what you expect here - lots of action, fight scenes and raw adrenaline chopped up and slowed down depending upon his mood on the day he was editing. There isn’t anything to really bring it all together though, but you’ll still have fun with this one. KE
Dir: Simon Curtis; US drama, 2011; 99 mins; Michelle Williams, Eddie Redmayne, Kenneth Branagh It is rather difficult to portray an actress whose image is still so ‘alive’. Williams captures the innocence, flirtation and insecurity of Monroe very well, delivering a complex performance. However, Williams never seems to fully exude the sexuality of Monroe. That was the message of this film, that Monroe was different in real life than her worldwide image. Nevertheless, Williams lacks the natural sexuality that Monroe always projeced. ED
Young Adult (3) Dir: Jason Reitman; US dark comedy, 2011, 93 minutes; Charlize Theron, Patton Oswalt, Patrick Wilson, Elizabeth Reaser This is a true feel-bad comedy about about prolonged adolescence and egocentrism in the shape of the stereotypical Mavis Gary played by Theron. This movie seems to split the crowd, the one thing that seems to be evident though is the convincing performance by Theron. MØ
Spud (11) Dir: Donovan Marsh; SA comedy, 2010, 112 minutes; John Cleese, Troye Sivan, Jamie Royal A family movie about a young boy who grows up under Apartheid in South Africa. The year is 1990 - the year of both the release of Nelson Mandela and Spud Milton’s first year at an elite boarding school. Cleese’s performance as ‘the good teacher’ has been praised by the critics, while the young Sivan has received acclaim for this part as the innocent Spud Milton. MØ
Big Miracle(3) Dir: Ken Kwapis; US/UK drama, 2012; 123 mins; Drew Barrymore, John Krasinski An inspiring family-centric whale tale that is truly enjoyable, uplifting and sends a strong message. The cast of strong actors and the chemistry they have with the whales is what makes the movie a heart-warming and sentimental one. SB
Puss in Boots (7) Dir: Chris Miller; US drama, 2011; 90 mins; Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, Zach Galifianakis, Billy Bob Thornton, Guillermo del Toro A spin-off from Shrek, Puss in Boots shows he’s worthy of it all and can be the new hero loved by children. Adventurous, funny and action-packed, the movie will be enjoyed by all ages. SB
G19
The Descendants(7) Dir: Alexander Payne; US comedy/drama, 2011; 115 mins; Geore Clooney, Shailene Woodley, Amara Miller Despite the nominations, Clooney delivers a performance we’ve seen many times before. LD
Safe House (15) Dir: Daniel Espinosa; US action, 2012; 117 mins; Denzel Washington, Ryan Reynolds If you’re a fan of good, dynamic directing, Washington’s darker, more menacing characters, and Reynold’s bruised face, you will like Safe House. DC
War Horse (11) Dir: Steven Spielberg; US drama, 2011, 145 mins; Jeremy Irvene, Emily Watson, Peter Mullin, David Thewlis, Tom Hiddleston Are you the sentimental type who cries at weddings? Then you will absolutely love this movie. If you are a cynic and a cranky old fart, you will find the sentimentality of this movie overbearing. KE
The Music Never Stopped Dir: Jim Kohlberg; US drama, 105 mins; J.K. Simmons, Lou Taylor Pucci, Julia Orman This film is like a satisfying meal; it isn’t too heavy and leaves you feeling content afterwards. ED

IT RESTORES your faith in the human ‘spirit’ to see that someone was nice enough to hire Gabriel Macht after his turn in The Spirit. And while Suits has a solid 60 on Metacritic, fans site IMDB gives it a high 8.8, suggesting there’s more to this than its done-to-death ‘criminal ends up working in law’ premise suggests. One critic described the leads as a smarty-pants and swaggering ass, and your enjoyment will depend on whether you find their banter witty or irritating. USA Today verged on the latter, describing it as “ludicrous, ill-cast and ill-conceived, with a premise that’s idiotic”. A safer bet must be David Attenborough’s look at how it all began in the two-parter First Life (DR2, Mon & Tue 19:00) in which he studies the habits of creatures
that have been around longer than Henry Kissinger. While Great Rift: Africa’s Wild Heart (DR2, Sun 20:00) is a three-parter BBC series that also really delivers. Who will take delivery of the world’s most famous statuettes? Talking Movies (BBC World, Sat 20:30) previews the show, TV2 Film shows it (early Monday morning) and the Oscar highlights (DR2, Mon 20:30) reviews it, starting with a 30-minute visit to the red carpet. The subjects of Once Upon A Time: Some Like It Hot (DRK, Fri 20:00) have been there – this is worth watching simply for Tony Curtis revisiting what it was like kissing Hitler – and Boy Cheerleaders (SV2, Mon 18:00) is a nicely-paced doc about Britain’s top boy’s team in a pastime that’s popular in Leeds.
Elsewhere, in Cocaine Diaries with Alex James (TV2, Sun 20:00) in which Blur’s bassist finds out what happened to his million plus quid in Colombia; don’t miss John Lithgow in series four of Dexter (TV3 Puls, Thu 22:00); there are new seasons of Royal Pains (TV3 Puls, Wed 22:00) and DCI Banks (SV1, Sat 21:30); there’s a special piracy (the TV3 Puls, Tue 22:00 Suits Somalian, not Sparrow kind) theme night on Monday on TV3+ that includes the BBC doc The Trouble with Pirates (19:40); Dagestan’s Football Dreams (BBC World, Fri 21:40) is possibly the craziest ever example of throwing money at the game; and Perez Hilton: Superfan Lady Gaga (TV2 Zulu, Tue 21:45) is too ghastly for word – see it if you hate yourself.
