AM I ALLOWED to mention that Nik & Jay had English lessons at the school I worked at for several years? Yeah, why not, after all, I spilled the beans about teaching Hannibal Gadaffi that you don’t “snore” cocaine – I can say that in the safety I’m not on krak, but please don’t misconstrue this juxtaposition. Anyhow, the bastards turned me down. They wanted an American teacher to help them with their future US conquest plans. A quick glance at their Wikipedia page reveals that, seven or eight years later, nothing’s happened yet. If only they’d gone British, and they could have caught the coattails of The Streets. English is where it is, innit. Yeah, I’ve seen Scum. Strange because you would have thought songs like ‘Lækker’ and ‘Boing!’ would translate pretty easily. Sample lyrics: “For du for lækker, lækker, lækker, lækker, lækker, lækker, lækker, lækker, lækker” and “Whoop - Uh-huh/
Whoop – Uh-huh/Boing! Boing!/ Whoop – Uh-huh/Yes/Okay.” You have to question whether they actually want to be successful. I heard their last album was called Engle eller dæmoner – what’s next, The Code of Da Vinci? Nevertheless, Nik lookalike Daniel van der Noon has written a very positive listing about the duo this week, but are we really sure their concerts sell out that fast. The last time I took the ferry to Oslo, they were performing as part of the Rock Cruise in the ship’s casino - the pokiest venue I’ve probably ever seen. At first glance they looked like a couple of croupiers. A slightly more successful export, but this time to Denmark, is tea, and the numbers of specialists shops (see G9 for details) continue to grow. As do gaming events (see G9 for news of Copenhagen Games 2012), gourmet food takeaways (see G13 for our review of Kødbyens Deli – I challenge anyone to find somewhere where the quality and price are so good) and English-language historical tours of the city (G8) on the 15th and 16th centuries, crime and – new this week – ghosts. Come on Nik & Jay, even the crooks and the spooks are going English – isn’t it about time you gave it a shot?

Undoubtedly, it will be one of this season’s highlights at the opera. American-born John Neumeier is the long-standing artistic director of the Hamburg Ballet. He has led the company since 1973 and created most of his over 140 ballets for it. But Copenhagen is no virgin territory for the choreographer, either. As a homage to Hans Christian Andersen in the year of the author’s 200th birthday celebrations, Neumeier’s The Little Mermaid opened the new

opera house in Holmen in 2005. Throughout his career Neumeier has dedicated himself to the story ballet, directing full-length pieces of both new versions of ballet classics - such as The Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty or Giselle - and literature adaptations, such as Ibsen’s Peer Gynt, Chekhov’s Seagull or Mann’s Death in Venice. The Lady of the Camellias is also part of that last category. The tear-jerking story about the impossible love between the courtesan Marguerite and the young bourgeois Armand goes back to Alexandre Dumas the Younger’s novel from 1848. Four years later, a dramatised version became one of the most attentiongrabbing theatre events of its time. The story is set in the demimonde of mid-19th century Paris. Armand Duval falls in love with Marguerite Gautier. She returns his feelings and gives up her life, which is financed by many simultaneous lovers. Their romance is ruined by Armand’s father who fears for his family’s reputation; he urges Marguerite to leave his son, and she complies, realising that it might secure Armand a better future. Marguerite returns to her

Huset i Magstræde, Rådhusstræde 13, Cph K; ends Sun, daily performances at 19:00; tickets: sold out (50kr), check internet forums for tickets; www.billetto.dk Evol: Love Backwards is not just another love story - it’s about love that goes backwards. It starts with a break-up and ends with the sweet feeling that someone has at the beginning of every love story. Every scene is performed by a different couple, all with diverse characteristics and sexualities. In this way different types of people are represented and the stage is transformed into a mirror where the audience can identify with the characters and connect with them despite their differences. It includes dialogues, corporal theatre, choreographies, music and video images. MH

former milieu and suffers silently, scorned by Armand who only finds out her real motives for refusing to see him when she is dying of tuberculosis. The reconciliation scene that immediately precedes Marguerite’s death is the climax of the emotion-laden piece. Besides Neumeier’s ballet version (for which the choreographer slightly altered the plot), Dumas’s novel and play have inspired numerous other adaptations for the stage, and the Greta Garbo film Camille. Perhaps most famously, Verdi’s opera La Traviata is based on the story of The Lady of the Camellias. Neumeier created the part of Marguerite for the renowned Brazilian prima ballerina Marcia Haydée in 1978. He choreographed The Lady of the Camellias to music by Frédéric Chopin. The piece came to Copenhagen in 1987, when the Hamburg Ballet performed it in a guest appearance on the Old Stage. Now, the dancers from the Royal Danish Ballet are dancing The Lady of the Camellias themselves, for the first time.

TICKETS ARE SELLING fast for this weekend’s three performances of Dance Delicious, a new performance dance concept that started in 2010 and endeavours to push the genre’s barriers further than ever before. While nobody knows what they will see – it’s a closely guarded secret – everyone knows it will be of the highest quality. That’s what audiences have learnt to expect from the choreographer Tim Rushton. Rushton, originally from Birmingham in the UK where he was born in 1963, danced for a variety of northern European ballet companies until the mid 1990s, ending up at the Royal Danish Ballet. It was here that he decided to quit dancing and try his hand at choreography.
Tick Tack Tock NEW
Rushton quickly developed a reputation for producing modern dance pieces with obvious classical influences at a number of theatres - including the Royal Danish Ballet, Dansescenen, Ballet School of the Royal Danish Theatre and MBT Danseteater, Musikhuset Aarhus - and it was no surprise when he was in 2001 appointed artistic director of the Danish Dance Theatre. Since then, the theatre has gone from strength to strength, winning awards and acclaim the world over, from Europe to North America, and from Australia to Asia Pacific. Above all, Rushton is a choreographer whose aim is to communicate human emotion. His contemporary style is, according to the theatre’s website, “emotionally-led, reflecting the nuances of human relationships’, and he often mixes live music, lightning and design features to achieve this end. For this year’s edition, Rushton has assembled some of the world’s most talented and prominent dance choreographers: Adi Amit, Ana Sendas Pereira, Fabio Liberti, Stefanos Bizas, Stina Malmgren, and last but not least, Alessandro Pereira.

Even the acclaimed choreographer Pereira admits that he did not have a concrete idea about what he was going to produce for the show until last week, when he suddenly got inspired after working with some of the dancers. Each choreographer will work with top professional Danish dancers, and together they will construct a dance theme, which they will only reveal a few minutes before the actual performance starts. At the end of the show, the audience will get the chance to ask questions about the performance directly to the choreographers and the dancers. Rushton says that the primary role of a performance like this is to “strengthen the dancers’ possibilities to express themselves artistically” while “the performance will – at the same time – connote a true ‘unpolished’ message that will surface without obscuring effects such as costumes, scenography, and advanced light settings.” The entire performance, which consists of three solos, two trios, and one quartet, is approximately 60 minutes long. Tickets are selling out quick so it is strongly advised that you book immediately. PETRA XOTTA

When Mikael Simpson and Ulige Numre (inset) take the Vega stage, it will be some of the best that Danish music has to offer
Move over Homer, in Denmark, Simpson means this homie Mikael Simpson & Sølvstrom + Ulige Numre Store Vega Friday 21:00; 185kr www.mikaelsimpson.dk www.uligenumre.dk www.vega.dk
M
usician and songwriter Mikael Simpson started his career in the mid-1990s as a guitarist and vocalist for the indie rock group Luxus. Since then, he has become a household name in Denmark thanks to a distinctive pop style that has remained consistent through a variety of projects and collaborations. He has worked together with DJ TOM (Thomas Bertelsen), the techno-duo Lulu Rouge, and composer/producer Trentemøller.
In his solo career, he has developed an instantly recognisable sound with gentle vocals and smooth beats. The relaxing and melancholic ebb and flow of songs like the Top-20 hit ‘Inden du falder i søvn’ (Before you fall asleep) and ‘Er du kommet for at faa noget’ (Have you come to get something) is drawn from a mix of downtempo electronica and alternative rock influences. Simpson himself plays a variety of instruments and acts as producer as well as vocalist on many of his recordings. His solo albums De Ti Skud (2004), Stille Og Uroligt (2006), and Slaar Skaar (2009) were each increasingly successful, both critically and commercially. He worked with writer and filmmaker Jørgen Leth and composer Frithjof Toksvig on two spoken word and music projects under the group name Vi Sid-
der Bare Her in 2010. Last year in September he released Noget laant, Noget blaat, a new solo album with a stronger emphasis on organ, bass and drums, written with composers Peder and Asger Baden. His lyrics remain saturated with the melancholy of relationships, but with a light drum beat and catchy riffs to carry everything forward, it is emotional but not heavy. The radio single ‘Morgenlys’ (Morning light) has found success with its uptempo beat. Reviews in the national press have largely given the album high ratings, though the consensus seems to be that while it may not be Simpson’s best ever work, the craft and contrast of the sound is impressive. Playing at Vega is part of a wider tour in support of the album, together with the band Sølvstorm:
guitarist Henrik Liebgott, Niclas Tange on drums, Georg Andersen on bass and Trentemøller at the keys. Meanwhile, the Danish alternative rock band Ulige Numre will be the opener on the tour. As now-defunct freesheet Urban put it, the band went “from unknown to talk of the town in four days” after the surprise success of their hit ‘København’. Released last September, this pop ode to Denmark’s harbour town and capital city captures the rock sentiment of this group of 20-something guys. The music video was posted on YouTube and simply took off, particularly after Simpson posted it on Facebook. But this was no amateur effort at songwriting. Musician Nikolaj Nørlund produced the track, emphasizing a soft melancholy over ringing guitar echoes.
The verses and choruses alternately soar and build up in a young and winsome style – a bit like the American band The National in their 2010 indie hit single ‘Bloodbuzz Ohio’. Lead singer Carl Emil Petersen’s vocals come from somewhere closer to earth, with nods to The Walkmen, another American indie group formed in 2000, as well as the tone of Swedish singer-songwriter Håkan Hellström in his song about Gothenburg. Influences aside, this young summer sound runs from garage rock to REM and back with great enthusiasm. It’s a sure bet that many a Copenhagener will be listening to the track this summer while sunbathing by the water. Alexis Kunsak

Loppen; 21:00; 80kr The Norwegian quartet with psychedelic shoe-gaze roots have taken a shot at a heavier brand of rock in their latest selftitled third studio album. While there’s a few highlights on the album – the opener ‘Tune Your Mind’ and the second track ‘Raising Flags’ – it regrettably loses its momentum midway through. The spark of their original that permeates Decay Decoy (2010) is but a mere flicker. Their live shows have so far fallen shy of fans’ expectations given that the band is simply unable to keep up with the haphazard arrangements that define their records.

ost people would connect Randy Crawford to her 1979 chart topper ‘Street Life’, a song that in many ways defined the ‘70s in a few, funk-filled verses topped by Crawford’s unmistakable highpitched vocals. There’s much more to the Georgia-born singer though, as I discovered on Thursday night at her performance at Store Vega. Backed by the jolly, endearing Joe Sample on the piano (along with his son on the bass) and a drummer, Crawford sounded as good as she must have way back when she started to carve out a name for herself in the annals of music history. Vega decided to make the concert a seated one shortly before it started, and the decision paid off. This was a show of a different nature, one that will be remembered for some time to come. Nik & Jay
Tap1; 20:00; 320kr Probably Denmark’s biggest hip-hop pop act, the duo are a popular hit with young kids and families and make their millions during the spring-summer season, touring endlessly. It’s practically impossible to have not heard one of their polished pop tunes on the radio or heard one of their four records that have topped the Danish charts; their latest Engle eller Dæmoner (2011) hit the top spot. The lyrics are in Danish but for the intelligent bilingual kids this of course won’t be a problem. Nik & Jay tickets are hot property so be sure to book up after finishing this sentence to avoid disappointment.
Sleep Party People
Forbrændingen; 21:00; 100kr Fronted by Copenhagen-based artist Brian Batz and members of another of the city’s emerging indie bands, Cody, SPP are one of Denmark’s most exciting electro prospects. Their somewhat dark, melancholic and hypnotic slant on electro produces original results, often reminiscent of a subdued Animal Collective. Their debut album, Speed of Sound/Alarm Music, was given a five star rating by heavyweight music publication Soundvenue. Live, SPP’s performances are almost as dreamy as the music itself with the zany band members wearing Nic Cave-inspired bunny-masks.
Emergenza Festival Semi-Final
Lille Vega; 19:00; 85kr Tonight is the final round of the semi-finals of this year’s Emergenza Festival – both Denmark’s and Europe’s biggest music competition, which takes place in a total of 150 cities worldwide. A total of eight Danish bands performing 30-minute slots, one of which will be the entertainingly-named Wifebeater Cooking Club at 21:00. Eventually, an overall winner will be decided at the Danish final at Store Vega on May 19 who will then go on to represent Denmark at the Nordic finals and hopefully at the international final in Germany later this year.
duo set the stage for Crawford, with several lengthy pieces interwoven with hearty anecdotes of episodes from Sample’s musical career. Sample sounded like a cheery old grandpa telling stories to his children (the audience) at times, and at others like one of the greatest musicians of modern time, tapping away at the grand piano with picture-perfect panache. Aura
Store Vega; 20:00; 180kr On the back of the popularity of Aura’s concert at Vega a few months back, this is an extra concert for those fans who weren’t fortunate to get their hands on a ticket. Born in Copenhagen, Aura Dione has become known for blending personal lyrics with catchy pop hooks. Making an enormous comeback with the release of her second record, Before The Dinosaurs (2011), Aura has become, once again, the darling of Denmark’s pop scene. Tapping into her Spanish heritage, Aura’s use of salsa rhythms adds a tangy flavour that has caught the imagination of the Danish public.

THANK GOODNESS the days seem to be growing longer and the sun has returned to brighten the landscape. It’s beautiful but not yet warm enough for the outside activities to be in full force. Now is the perfect time to explore the museums and attractions that may not be a usual part of the family repertoire: a cultural breath of fresh air before the warm weather allows us to cast aside our coats once again. never so many that it feels busy or that you cannot take time over the exhibits, and there always seems to be a calmness surrounding the rooms. To be perfectly honest, the majority of the visitors are male, aside from the mothers of the boys (that’s me) or grandmothers, but then this is every little boy’s dream museum. It is like landing in the playroom car box, only of course everything is life-sized. Something to bear in mind is that the hanger is not heated, so in winter, and I tell you this with experience, it can be absolutely freezing. I recommend layering up if you go in the colder months. WHO NEEDS real sports, when Copenhagen Games 2012 is right around the corner? Designed for those who love e-sports, electronic entertainment and probably Star Trek and Star Wars, Cph Games is the ultimate experience for computer-game aficionados. One of Scandinavia’s largest e-sport events, Cph Games assembles the crème de la crème of players and game developers, giving them the opportunity to socialise, play games and discuss common passions and interests. In other words, it is a haven for computer nerds. Organised by SLAP.dk - Denmark’s largest and oldest e-sports organiser Cph Games is the country’s proudest gaming competition event, so dearly esteemed by fans that it counts on the support of over 50 volunteers. It takes place once a year and this year’s total prize pool is 49,100 euros. Who ever said being geeky doesn’t pay off? Akin to a music festival, Cph Games is up and running for five straight days and attracts a widely international crowd. The participants are welcome to sleep over, so they can fully enjoy every glorious minute of the experience. Instead of tents, they have designated sleeping rooms, and rather than listening to music, they play games, and in this context, games rock harder than any artist ever could. Who needs Lady Gaga when you can have League of Legends? So, what exactly happens at Cph Games? The simple answer is that a lot of electricity gets used up while an army of geeks plays itself to the bone. But it

If not, you better start practicing now as the museum opens the doors for egg racing as well as other Easter fun with the family. This is also the chance to learn more about different Easter traditions, and to find out how the egg became a part of it. MSØ Easter egg hunt NEW Frederiksberg Have (meet up at the playground), Frederiksberg Runddel 3 E, Frederiksberg; Tue 10:00-15:00; free adm Join this Easter egg hunt that’s organised by Kinder Surprise. When you meet up at the playground, you will get a treasure map with instructions, and by the end of the day you’re guaranteed an Easter egg. Warming up for the League of Legends inebriated division
is actually more intricate than that, or so I’m made to understand. There are fierce teams, complex rules, goals to achieve and awards to be won. Skill is everything and only the best make it through the tournament’s countless challenges. Last year’s event was enjoyed by over 700 gamers. The participants comprise several different teams, who battle each other to the death, or, until they win the cash prizes: first place earns the winning team 9,400 euros, second place pays 4,700 euros and the third place 2,600 euros (the amounts may vary depending on the game). Not bad, considering most of the participants would probably play for free.
So which games are on the menu? The main tournaments include Counter Strike 1.6, Counter Strike Source, Starcraft II, League of Legends and Battlefield 3. If you recognise any of these names, you should probably consider joining in on the fun. All in all, Cph Games is an exciting event that allows gamers from all over the world to get together and have a good time doing things most of us consider nerdy or geeky. InOut | THE CPH POST ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE Seafood Paella
FOOD BLOG
BY JESSICA O’SULLIVAN
I’VE OFTEN THOUGHT the best part about travelling is experiencing new food, and a recent trip to Spain proved no different. One dish that I simply couldn’t get enough of was ‘Paella de Marisco’ - Seafood Paella as it’s known in English. Paella is a Catalan word that derives from the old French word ‘paelle’ for pan, which in turn comes from ‘patella’, the Latin word for pan as well. Paella is a Valencian rice dish that originated in its modern form in the mid-19th century near Lake Albufera, a lagoon in Valencia, on the east coast of Spain.
While there are three internationally known types of paella - Valencian Paella, Mixed Paella and Seafood Paella - the latter would have to be my favourite. While Valencian Paella consists of white rice, green vegetables, meat (rabbit, chicken, duck), land snails, beans and seasoning, Seafood Paella replaces meat and snails with seafood. A truly delicious dish, paella has a reputation for being very hard to make well, which can frighten many people off. But with a little practise you will be eating like the Spaniards in no time, and fancying a flamenco.

There’s live music Thursday-Sunday (22:00-late), the kitchen is open from 10:00 until late every day - serving a burger meal with pint for just 120kr - the pub caters to all sports fans, there’s a pool table in their back room where you can smoke, and upstairs there’s a new lounge area, which is the perfect place to relax with a view over Strøget. BH Brew Pub Vestergade 29, 1456 Cph K; restaurant open Mon-Sat 12:00-22:00, pub open MonThu 12:00-24:00, Fri-Sat 12:00-02:00, Sun closed; 3332 0060; three-course lunch menu 155kr; www.brewpub. dk The menu is full of hearty, homely, yet inventive dishes featuring inspired use of the same wonderful ingredients that go into the brewing process. Each dish can be easily matched by one of Brew Pub’s own concoctions from the casks across the courtyard. AK Kennedy’s Irish Bar Gammel Kongevej 23, 1610 Cph V; Open Mon-Sun 12:0002:00 It’s not an Irish pub. Instead it’s a pub owned by Irishmen, and there’s a big difference. It’s an authentic taste of what the Emerald Isle was like in the 1980s in a pub totally devoid of concepts, themes, and DIY Irish pub kits. Drop by at 17:00 on Fridays for the traditional Irish music sessions which are rapidly gaining in popularity. BH
Southern Cross Løngangstræde 37, Cph K; open Sun-Thu 15:00-03:00, Sat-Sun 12:00-05:00; 3311 0939 This Aussie boozer is a mecca for expats and Danes, old and young, that has a lively darts board, a fortnightly quiz, a good sports-viewing atmosphere, and a happy hour that lasts to 8pm during which you can buy beers for just 30kr. JHW The Dubliner Amagertorv 5, Strøget, 1160 Cph K; Opening Hours: Mon-Sun 10:00-late This pub is never quiet. It’s the perfect place for sports fans to mingle, or for live music which it provides every day. It also serves food all day from 10am to 10pm, and diners can find peace from the music and sport on a table overlooking the walking street, or on the first floor balcony overlooking Amagertorv. BH The Globe Nørregade 43-45, 1165 Cph K; Opening hours vary, until 03:00 Fri-Sat Friendly service and good value food make this the perfect city pub, and it’s difficult to know where to enjoy your pint given the number of options. If it’s company you want, you might try the main bar, or a private function, the second bar; seating-wise pull up a high chair, relax on cushioned benches or lord it as a bishop for the evening; or go genteel in the library - a great place to cheat in the fortnightly quiz, the longest running in the city. BH The Old English Pub Vesterbrogade 2B, 1620 Cph V; Open Sun-Thu 11:30-02:30, Fri-Sat 11:30-04:30; 3332 1921; www.oldenglishpub.dk This Victorian style English pub has all the class and authenticity of a Cotswolds country pub not a Costa del Sol flea trap. Facing Tivoli’s arches and just a stone’s throw from Strøget, it’s the ideal pit-stop on a tour of the city centre. LB

Deli’s fresh and fab food will make your belly dance CALLING your burger ‘gourmet’ does not justify you charging 130 kroner for it. Or at least not now Kødbyens Deli, a takeaway restaurant in the Meatpacking District, have started charging half that price for their deluxe and hearty take on the world’s favourite sandwich. And before you ask if this a gimmick, that amazing value for money stretches across their entire menu, and the quality doesn’t dip on a single item. When you walk into Kødbyens Deli, you’re not hit with the instant feeling that it serves impressively high-quality food, but they do. Opened in May 2011 by two professional chef friends, Emil and Frederik, this simplistic, spick and span deli - with basic décor and a couple of cosy corners with colourful cushions and a large chalkboard adorned with their menu and daily specials - prides itself on the freshness of its ingredients, and by freshness they mean “no freezer”, says Emil. Every single day, Kødbyens Deli gets a new supply of fresh meat, fish and spices, which explains the fine quality of the food they prepare. One can definitely always taste the difference when the ingredients used in a dish are fresh. Kødbyens Deli claims that its speciality is its Fish ‘n’ Chips. Quite simply, Emil and Frederik, it is “the best”. The batter is crunchy and tasty, and the cod fish comes off in chunky layers and has the right amount of chew to it, proving its freshness. The hearty wedges are golden brown (cooked to a Danish taste, of course), tasty, crisp on the outside, and soft and smooth on the inside. The Fish ‘n’ Chips comes in two options: for the men (Herre modellen), the fish comes with wedges and a good ol’ rich tartar sauce, while the women (Dame modellen) get their fish with a side serving of greens paired with tartar sauce – all for a worthy 60 kroner. Or opt for the Chick ‘n’ Chips instead, which also comes with men’s or women’s menu options. At The Copenhagen Post, we had the privilege of tasting a few of the dishes for lunch, and all of us agreed that it was pretty fantastic food for a takeaway place. Also, it didn’t go un-noticed that their dishes came in generous portions. A chicken breast is usually a tricky piece of meat to cook as it can easily dry out, but it was succulent and tender in their chicken sandwiches, while the salmon was chunky and flaky (in a good way) in their salmon sandwiches.
Join the party and watch St. George ride into battle against the dragon. Can he save the damsel in distress?
The men’s Fish ‘n’ Chips is simply “the best” claim the deli’s owners
The sandwich breads they use are homemade and look heavy, but they turned out to be light and soft – perfect for a filling, yet not too heavy for lunch. Or even for the weight-conscious. Worthy of a taste too is their dish of the day – we were pleasantly surprised with a tomato-based fish stew with aubergines, potatoes, and caramelised onion. The use of tomatoes in stew can be a tricky one as tomato pastes have a sharp and sour taste and need to be cooked till they’re almost burnt before they release their sweetness - Kødbyens
Deli’s was cooked to perfection. Thankfully, much attention was given to the fish. They made sure the fish wasn’t swimming in the stew in tiny, unidentifiable pieces. Instead, fresh, white and large fillets of codfish were placed on top of the stew. The stew had a soft and delicate taste that made you want to snuggle up in bed in this cold climate and feast on it – which is also so perfect that they are a takeaway deli! For those who enjoy Danish cuisine, using codfish, they serve fiskedeller (fish meatballs) made of codfish that
that come with freshly-baked rye bread accompanied by a crunchy salad and home-made remoulade. Or you’re free to buy just one fiskedelle to go. They also offer a selection of tapas, salads accompanied by a choice of smoked salmon or juicy chicken, and even dessert. Kødbyens Deli also caters for companies who want regular lunches or are organising special occasions. Though it may be a new restaurant, it’s a deli not to be underestimated.

Wrath of the Titans (11)
Dir: Jonathan Liebesman; US action, 2012, 126 mins; Sam Worthington, Liam Neeson, Rosamund Pike, Ralph Fiennes
Premiered March 29 Playing nationwide
O
NCE YOU have been doing reviews for a while (which I have), you find that your arse is actually an extremely good judge of movies. When it is happy and content and enjoying the movie, it has no problem plopping down into the theatre chair and being sat on for two hours at a time. But for Wrath of the Titans, the other moviegoers must have assumed that I was doing chair aerobics for all the times that I had to change positions in my chair. Wrath seems to have all the necessary elements you would expect for a top-drawer action movie: plenty of action and production design, just a hint of romance to round the characters without taking away from the action, good bits of comedy spread throughout, and just enough of an interesting story to help tie everything together. Unfortunately, instead of a film of mythological proportions, it is legendary only because it fizzles like an old soda. Wrath… begins ten years after Clash… Our hero from Clash…, Perseus (Worthington sporting something of a mullet) is trying to live a normal human existence as a single father and fisherman, turning his back on his halfgodly heritage. Unbeknownst to him, shadiness is afoot. Cronos, who was imprisoned by his three sons, Hades (Fiennes), Poseidon (Huston) and Zeus (Neeson) – during the old war of the
“I giveth onto thee, the newest Norwegian black metal band: Titan Wrath” gods, has brokered a deal with Hades and Ares (Martinez), Zeus’s less loved son, to sap Zeus’s god-power to help him break free from his imprisonment in the underworld. With much consternation – his town is being besieged by beasts from below and his son is being threatened – Perseus goes on a quest to rescue Zeus from Tartarus, with the help of Queen Andromeda (Pike), Agenor (Kebbell), the son of Poseidon, and Hephaestus (Nighy), a fallen god. In the process he could, just maybe, find a cure for can-
cer, lead the way to save the world from the impending annihilation and start a world class extermination company. Okay, well one out of three ain’t bad. The acting in ‘Wrath…’ was neither titanic nor olympic, but rather worn, like my old Metallica ‘Kill ‘em all’ cassette tape. I would expect more from the likes of Neesom, Fiennes, Nighy, Worthington and even Edgar Ramirez. However, Liebesman as a director is not exactly known for his great characterisations in films, unless you consider Battle-Los Angeles and Texas
Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning terrific examples of script and character development. But as bad as the acting was (perhaps if the characters were muted every time they spoke it might have been acceptable), the production was actually really good. The 3D was seamless and headache free, the action well choreographed with tons of energy, and the CGI special effect monsters and villains splendid (the giant firey Cronos notwithstanding) – with a sound track that kept pace in every way.
Predictable, only grandma shines The Lucky One (11)
Dir: Scott Hicks; US drama 2012, 101 mins; Zac Efron, Taylor Schilling, Blythe Danner
Premiered June 7 Playing nationwide
T
HE LUCKY ONE doesn’t deliver many plot twists, and if you have seen the trailer, you basically saw the whole film. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing. You know what to expect, so you can’t claim to be
disappointed by it. It’s a romantic drama, so don’t anticipate fireworks. The main character, Logan, a marine, believes that he survived Iraq thanks to a photo of a woman he found in the rubble. He sets out to find her and thank her. Lacking the right words, he takes up a job as her helper in the kennel and waits for the opportune moment. Feelings develop, cue an envious ex, a little bit of drama, a lot of glorification of the war, and a tragic dénouement. The person behind The Lucky One is Scott Hicks (Shine) – a renowned director and an Oscar nominee. His direction was seamless, but it remains to be seen if this film
will reach the acclaim some of his other creations received. What jumps from the screen here are the nature shots. It may sound cheesy and unfair to the actors, but the views simply steal the spotlight. The lush green of the forests, the tranquil lake, the stormy river – all rather transparently reflect and highlight the innermost feelings of the characters. Perhaps the fault lies in the predictable script. The characters’ personalities were well developed, but unfortunately not very original – bordering on stereotypes. Nothing in the dialogue popped up as dazzling, and Efron’s lines were just downright stiff and cli-
chéd (whether it was the script or Efron himself will be left unsaid). Schilling’s Beth lacked spunk. Thankfully, Blythe Danning takes the cherry in this one. Cheerful and cheeky, for a grandma, she brings warmth and humour the others lack and glues the whole thing together. Another small complaint is that the film could have been a tad shorter. A couple of minutes less would have meant a more dynamically paced story – and much less eye-rolling. Apart from that, it was a pleasant enough film – not bad, but not anything special either. Look at who’s all grown-up
In essence, we are given half of a movie worth watching and another half that gives one ants in the pants. ‘Clash…’ was too bogged down in Greek mythology and yet still managed to gross around 500 million worldwide. With ‘Wrath…’, they’ve made the story simpler (maybe too much so), but still manage to make a better film than the first, although truth be told, that’s not difficult. While this film may not be worthy of the gods, it will suffice for us mortal humans. Just maybe bring an extra pillow for your bum.

New this Week Mirror, Mirror (7) Dir: Tarsem Singh; US dramady, 2012, 106 mins; Lily Collins, Julia Roberts, Armie Hammer One of the most beloved stories of all time is coming to life in the film for the whole family, Mirror Mirror. A fresh and funny retelling of the Snow White legend, Mirror Mirror features breakout star Lily Collins as Snow White, a princess in exile, and Julia Roberts as the evil queen who ruthlessly rules her captured kingdom. MH
The Ides of March (3) Dir: George Clooney; US drama, 2011, 101 mins; Geore Clooney, Ryan Gosling, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Paul Giamatti Initially, the film seems too sleek. But then the film takes a few unexpected turns, which creates intriguing conflicts. LD
Avoid like the Plague This Means War (11)
Dir: Martin Scorsese; US drama, 2011, 128 mins; Asa Butterfield, Chloë Moretz, Ben Kingsley, Jude Law A wondrous blend of fantasy and mystery that will appeal to adults as well as children. MH
Dir: McG; US com, 2012, 98 mins; Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine, Tom Hardy, Til Schweiger This Means War is about two spies who are close friends, and how they compete over the same girl. Directed by McG, this film shifts with random bursts of energy. The script is mediocre, and the settings are off. The only pleasure comes from watching Bronson and Captain Kirk fighting over Legally Blonde. MH
Shame (15)
Project X (15)
Book Your Tickets Hugo (15)
Dir: Steve McQueen; UK drama, 2011, 101 mins; Michael, Carey Mulligan, Nicole Beharie Shame is a claustrophobic drama of intensity and urgency. It will make any recent films seem trivial and tame, a strange and unique beast indeed. It’s mature drama, bravely tackling complicated subject matter for those looking to experience something different. It’s original, visceral and disquieting - in the way only cinema can be. MW
Dir: Nima Nourizadeh; US comedy, 2012, 88 mins; Thomas Mann, Oliver Cooper, Jonathan Daniel Brown At 88 minutes, the film manages to outstay its welcome, playing like an overlong episode of The Inbetweeners with 100 times the budget and none of the charm. It’s big, loud and pointless. It’s probably going to be massive. MW
Also Playing The Hunger Games (11) Dir: Gary Ross; US sci-fi, 2012, 142 mins; Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson Ross has successfully dissected and expanded the book and produced something that works as a film - so long as you’re not too precious about its origins. MH
The Iron Lady (3) Dir: Phyllida Lloyed; UK/ Fra drama, 2012, 105 mins; Meryl Streep, Jim Broadbent, Olivia Colman, Richard E Grant From the first frame there’s a growing awareness that our perceptions of this woman are being gently and skilfully manipulated by director Phyllida Lloyd and screenwriter Abi Morgan, so much so that regardless of your political persuasion you’d have to be resolutely stubborn or emotionally retarded in failing to be moved by this biopic. Nevertheless, Margaret Thatcher is full blooded; she lives and breathes before your eyes. This film belongs entirely to Streep. MW
The Descendants (7) Dir: Alexander Payne; US dramedy, 2011, 115 mins; Geore Clooney, Shailene Woodley, Amara Miller Despite the nominations, Clooney delivers a performance we’ve seen many times before. LD
The Artist (3)
John Carter (11)
Dir: Michel Hazanavicius; Fra/Bel dramedy, 2011, 100 mins; Jean Dujardin, Bernice Bejo, John Goodman, James Cromwell It’s difficult to see why this film is being championed so highly. Many will defend it by claiming that detractors are put off by a lack of colour, dialogue, explosions and other contemporary mainstays. But really their efforts would be better spent lauding Chaplin’s Modern Times or Murnau’s Sunrise. MW
Dir: Andrew Stanton; US sci-fi, 2012, 132 mins; Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins, Samantha Morton, Mark Strong John Carter is enjoyable, but not memorable. Somehow it feels that Disney should stick to what Disney does best - animations - and leave live-action films to others. But if you don’t mind formulaic plot devices and only crave a bit of light-hearted entertainment, it’s a pleasant enough way to spend two hours. DC
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (11)
My Week With Marilyn (3)
Dir: Tomas Alfredson; UK/ Fra/Ger thriller, 2011, 127 mins; Gary Oldman, John Hurt, Ciaran Hinds, Colin Firth, Mark Strong, Kathy Burke, Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Hardy Atmospheric and stylish yes, but this has to be the most un-thrilling thriller of recent memory. MW
Dir: Simon Curtis; US drama, 2011, 99 mins; Michelle Williams, Eddie Redmayne, Kenneth Branagh It is rather difficult to portray an actress whose image is still so ‘alive’. Williams captures the innocence, flirtation and insecurity of Monroe very well, delivering a complex performance. However, Williams never seems to fully exude the sexuality of Monroe. That was the message of this film, that Monroe was different in real life than her worldwide image. Nevertheless, Williams lacks the natural sexuality that Monroe always projeced. ED
Jiro Dreams of Sushi (3) Dir: David Gelb; US documentary, 2012, 81 mins; Jiro Ono, Yoshikazu Ono Jiro Dreams of Sushi is the story of 85 year-old Jiro Ono, considered by many to be the world’s greatest sushi chef. It gives a penetrating look at traditional Japanese culture and is a tasty treat for sushi snobs. MH
Safe House (15) Dir: Daniel Espinosa; US action, 2012, 117 mins; Denzel Washington, Ryan Reynolds If you’re a fan of good, dynamic directing, Washington’s darker, more menacing characters, and Reynold’s bruised face, you will like Safe House. DC

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (3) Dir: John Madden; UK dramady, 2012, 124 mins; Judy Dench, Bill Nighy, Maggie Smith, Tom Wilkinson A dissapointingly familiar form with surprisingly charming content. Take your mum. MW
Contraband (15) Dir: John Madden; UK dramady, 2012, 124 mins; Judy Dench, Bill Nighy, Maggie Smith, Tom Wilkinson The story is like a puzzle, but the audiance isn’t given all the pieces. Instead, we are given bits and pieces that tend to only make sense later on when we see their true meaning in context. We are supossed to be dazzled by the cleverness of the idea, as each accomplishment is revealed along with the realisation of what must have taken place. Still, overal it’s an entertaining experience. LD
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (11) Dir: Stephen Daldry; US drama, 2011, 129 mins; Tom Hanks, Sandra Bullock, Thomas Horn If you’re a moviegoer who enjoys having your heartstring plucked like a bluegrass banjo, this is the king of movie you will be gushing over this while drinking double mocha non-fat cappuccinos with your friends. Stephen Fry’s 100 Greatest Gadgets
spor t THE W OF EEK
BBC Entertainment, Wed 21:10
THE EDITOR of a well-known magazine told me how a TV show interviewed him on a subject he’s an expert on. He was proud of his work: he had been witty, succinct and presumed he’d command a hefty section of the programme. He told colleagues and family to tune in. So imagine his horror to discover he didn’t feature at all. Instead, all of his opinions had been fed to ‘celebs’– you know, reality TV, commercials, soaps, that sort of thing. The worst ones are the retrospectives when guests recall phenomena that occurred when they were barely three years old – but they’re easy viewing and among the obvious observations, there are bound to a few moments on Stephen Fry’s 100 Greatest Gadgets worth catching.
Another programme you should watch while reading a book is Martin Scorsese’s George Harrison: Living in the Material World (DR2, Tue 20:55). Watched in its three-hour entirety will induce insomnia – pass out to the bit about his love of Eastern mysticism, and your dreams will be groovy man. Harrison was always a bit strange. He once cheated death by chanting “Hare Krishna” at the man who was stabbing him – not sure this would have made most people stop. Somebody should have stopped them making Ben Hur. There can’t be many miniseries actually shorter than the original movie, but this is one of them. Just 5.7 is not a good score on IMBD, but hey, you’re going to tune in for the chariot race, right?
Better rated (65 on Metacritic) is the first season of The Defenders (TV2 Zulu, Sun 07:40), but would you Adam and Eve it m’lord, it’s another legal eagle drama. How many of these things can we take? Elsewhere, it’s a week of insight into lost civilisations in The Last Aztec (both episodes from DRK, Wed 20:00); US-Mexico BBC Ent, Wed 21:10 Stephen Fry’s 100 Greatest Gadgets illegal migration activities in The Border (DR HD, Fri 20:00 & Wed 22:20); Simon & Garfunkel (SV2, Sat 19:00 & Tue 23:00); The Story of Jesus (SV2, Mon-Wed 18:00); and the making of Tom’s Diner - Suzanne Vega (DRK, Tue 20:30). And finally, Sport Relief (BBC Ent, Sun 18:00) gets a screening a week after being shown in the UK. BEN HAMILTON DR1, Mon-Tue 21:35 Ben Hur
