MIDDLE EAST UPDATE Q4 - 2013
ALTHOUGH STILL ONLY HALFWAY
Although still only halfway through the annual Box Appeal campaign I am delighted to see the enthusiasm and dedication shown by our hotels in the region in their support of this initiative. This is truly a unique and inspirational project, and one that is growing year on year. A big thank you to all those involved. On the same note our Responsible Business month has seen the hotels busy with community and environmental activities and there are some excellent examples of what the teams have been doing in their respective hotels in this issue of ME Update.
Until next time. Mark Willis

BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT UPDATE
DEAR ALL, After a successful second quarter with the signing of three hotels in Dubai, Bahrain and Oman, Q3 saw our focus shift mainly to Saudi Arabia where we were happy to announce the signing of five more hotels across the Kingdom. These include two new-build and takeover opportunities in Riyadh under Park Inn by Radisson, a Radisson Blu Hotel & Residence in Jeddah’s northern district, and two resorts under the Radisson Blu brand in Al Khobar and in Jizan. Jizan marks Rezidor’s entry into a new market as the hotel is expected to open before the end of 2014. In terms of openings, we expect the Park Inn conversion of an unbranded 164-room property in Riyadh to be completed and branded by December 2013, while the Park Inn Hotel & Residence in Duqm (Oman) is to open its doors by January 2014. Recent signings have shown Rezidor’s gradual shift to meeting the new dynamics of the Middle East market. These comprise the following:
4
• The expansion of Park Inn by Radisson as a midmarket brand particularly in secondary as well as primary cities and sub-markets • An increasing focus on Saudi Arabia and the UAE as a primary market and a select expansion of Radisson Blu as our core brand • Targeting select conversion opportunities for the takeover and branding of existing hotels • Meeting the increasing demand for serviced apartments as well as resorts across Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Oman and beyond. Please stay tuned for the next business development update as we head towards the last quarter of the year. All the best, Elie Milky, Director Business Development, Middle East & Africa

IF YOU WERE MADE GM FOR A DAY WHAT WOULD YOU DO? Being a boss can be very stressful at times. Nevertheless if I was a GM, I would focus on achieving a top rating for of our Bay club and gym in Sharjah. I would also provide all of our employees with an overnight stay at our resort as a means of motivation. WHAT’S THE MOST UNUSUAL THING THAT HAS HAPPENED TO YOU AT WORK? I think the surprise birthday party given by my clients and colleagues for my last birthday was something unusual because I never had a party like that before. I’m very happy with my work, my team and my guests. In Radisson Blu Resort Sharjah, the work atmosphere is very positive.
WHAT DOES THE YES I CAN! SPIRIT MEAN TO YOU? The Yes I Can! spirit to me is to do things right the first time for my guests and for the hotel employees which demands a lot of preparation and dedication to my job. I like to work a lot but if ever I get any free time, I spend it working out and researching techniques on building that perfect body fit to compete for the championships.

It is a breathtaking combination of ancient cultural heritage and modern architecture allowing Oman to preserve its historic character, and at the same time enjoy a contemporary spirit. focusing on bringing leisure and business travellers from all over the world to this beautiful country. While Oman as a whole is actively striving to attract international visitors, expanding everything from its museums to its resorts, Muscat is very much the focus for the revamp, with cultural events, and accommodations. Muscat is a very clean city and it has gained the honour of winning the Cleanest Arab City Contest several consecutive times and has been named the Second Best City to visit in the world in 2012 by the travel guide publisher Lonely Planet. It’s a privilege to live and work here at the same time. Oman is a developing country and it gives me a pleasure to see its growth.
Don’t forget also to visit the seaside in Shatti Al Qurum, and the coffee shops where you can sit outside with your favourite drink or take a walk along the beach. The Ministry of Tourism in Oman has started to boost awareness campaigns
