hough regional markets are at different stages in terms of environmental products and requirements, the fact of the matter is that developers and clients in the region are increasingly concerned about environment and sustainability. Thanks to pathbreaking initiatives such as Estidama and Masdar City and efforts by local bodies like Dubai Municipality to create green guidelines, standards and benchmarks, the demand for environmentally friendly products is growing rapidly in the UAE. Mapei has been at the forefront of developing more environmentally friendly products in the adhesives, sealants and chemical segments for buildings. The company produces ‘green’ products in line with its own internal policy and commitment to develop and manufacture the most environmentally responsible products in the industry. In general, under sealants, adhesives and building chemicals, there are essentially four contributing areas under LEED or other green building certification schemes: • Materials that improve air quality by developing an Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) plan to reduce particles in the air during installation • Low VOC emitting products • Recycled content by reducing impact from extraction and processing of virgin materials • Using of regional materials by reducing environmental impact from transportation. Thanks to vigorous R&D efforts, the company today boasts of over 150 products that contribute to LEED or other green building or environmental certification while meet-
ing (or exceeding) international standards. Maipei also places tremendous emphasis on ensuring that the composition or constituents of the products don’t harm the environment, their installers and also users. The products are designed with installation issues in mind as well as the service life of the application; therefore, in addition to ease of use, extremely low VOC (volatile organic content) formulations safeguard the health and safety of all. The emphasis on local production not only reduces shipping distances but also the carbon footprint of the products. Moreover, these facilities incorporate strict environmental practices such as state-of-the-art filtration systems, battery-operated forklifts and wind and thermal powered factory ventilation (found at the UAE facility).
Maipei estimates that currently over 60% of its products sold in the UAE could be considered ‘green.’ Furthermore, nearly 85% of the products sold are manufactured locally and are part of the company’s ‘green innovation’ range. In 2009, Maipei submitted its locally produced product, Keraflex, which is also part of the green innovation range, for the GAIA Awards and was selected in the top three, winning the silver category.

Polyamide Strip for Thermal Insulation
W
ith sustainable use of resources and environmentally friendly products becoming increasingly important, Technoform Bautec is working on bio-based polyamide insulation profiles. The biopolymers group includes ‘bio-based’ polymers made of renewable raw material and also ‘biodegradable’ polymers that degrade in water or other chemicals, and therefore used, for example, in packaging. For insulating profiles, bio-based polyamides made from the fruits of the castor oil plant are qualified. There are three bio-based polyamides which come into consideration for insulating profiles, due to their good mechanical properties and their high temperature resistance, namely PA10.10 (100% bio-based), PA6.10 (62% bio-based) and PA4.10 (70% bio-based). In fact, production capacity of bio-based material is still low as commercialisation has just started. Of the different bio-based polyamides, PA6.10 is the raw material with the best availability, while only a limited number of suppliers currently offer PA10.10 and PA4.10. Limited availability of naturally irrigated arable land means there will always be competition between cultivation of food, animal feed and industrial raw material. A study by the Nova-institute concluded: “Even if an increasing share of arable land is used for energy and industrial material use, there is still much scope for the expansion of agricultural areas and even more scope for productivity increases” [M. Carus, Dr. S. Piotrowski]. However, castor oil plant has an advantage that it also grows in very dry areas. Very often, a by-product of cultivation of plants for bio-
plastics is high-value protein-rich animal feed. Technoform has successfully tested PA10.10, PA6.10 and PA4.10 for their processability; while their mechanical properties fulfil the specifications of the Technoform material data sheet for standard material, the characteristic values of the assembly (tested using a standard geometry) reach the same values as standard profiles. On the basis of these findings, Technoform Bautec is now planning to launch a joint project for customers interested in exploring the quality of these materials in their systems.

C
onstromech has been promoting environmentally friendly products in the region since 2005. The company won the GAIA award in 2008 and 2009 for the Port-A- Cool portable evaporative air coolers and a Silver medal for Reusable Concrete Curing Covers manufactured by Reef Industries. The Port-a-cool Air Cooler has been well received in the region with nearly 3,000 units installed in the UAE alone, while the Reusable Concrete Curing covers are being used by construction companies who have consciously adopted the use of ‘Green’ products to conserve the region’s natural resources. OAMGLAS is a cellular glass thermal insulation product manufactured by Pittsburgh Corning Europe. Made from recycled glass, FOAMGLAS thermal insulation products are a superior alternative to extruded polystyrene (XPS). Free from ecologically harmful blowing agents, FOAMGLAS is also impervious to moisture (water and vapour), doesn’t support mould growth, blocks radon and keeps out termites and rodents. Moreover, no mutagenic or carcinogenic chemicals are used during its production. There are no flame retardants or other additives. As a 100% inorganic material, FOAMGLAS is inert and fireproof. FOAMGLAS slabs are dimensionally stable with enough compressive strength to be used under any concrete slab. Because it is so rigid, FOAMGLAS can also reduce the thickness of the concrete slab. With thermal conductivities ranging from 0.038 to 0.050 W/(mK) and compressive strengths from 0.40 to 1.60 N/mm², they are suited for interior or exterior use, in multiple applications. FOAMGLAS can be used as below grade insulation to protect bearing walls and foundation rafts on the outside, as façade and roof insulation. Terraces, parking decks and interior insulation for walls, floor and soffits – even under harsh humidity conditions – add to the many areas of application for this sustainable insulation material. It is universally suited for renovation and new build and meets the high demands of passive house construction. The real value of FOAMGLAS comes from replacing other layers in the construction system (vapour retarders, moisture barriers,
radon-control components), simplifying detail design to lower risk of system failure, durability and environmental attributes. At the end of its long service life, which extends well beyond 50 years, the insulation can be recycled. Using FOAMGLAS contributes to credits for LEED and Estidama ratings. At the BAU 2011 exhibition in Munich, FOAMGLAS was awarded the natureplus Quality Seal by Natureplus, an international organisation focussed on developing sustainability culture within the building sector. The natureplus seal is an international symbol of recognition for building products with a high level of quality in the areas of health, the environment and functionality. FOAMGLAS was assessed according to the stringent award guidelines in laboratory and in the plant of the manufacturer by official experts from the Austrian Institute for Environmental Sustainable Architecture, the Bremen Environmental Institute and the Belgian VIBE Institute. FOAMGLAS was also awarded The Future
Build Product of the Month – March 2011 by MASDAR. In May 2011 Saudi’s King Abdullah officially opened the new campus of the $5.3b Princess Noura bint Abdulrahman University (PNU) less than three years after laying the foundation stone for the university. The new university is the largest women-only university in the world, covering 800 hectares on the outskirts of Riyadh. The new campus includes a 700-bed hospital, 15 colleges, a central library, a conference hall, laboratories and research centres. It also comprises staff housing units, student hostels, infrastructure facilities plus administration buildings. The university is designed to cater for more than 50,000 students.
