ITALY AND NEW ZEALAND: BUSINESS ROUNDTABLE AND NETWORKING
102
WELCOME Despite the distance between us, New Zealand and Italy have deep historical connections as well as strong people-topeople linkages. We also enjoy connections in sport and culture, and through tourism. Our trade ties are successful and valuable, and Italy is an important market for New Zealand exports. For example, the Italian market has helped us expand the potential of wool, a core product with strong sustainability credentials. New Zealand is working with Italian partners to expand the market for its finest quality merino wool, which here becomes part of the premium ‘Made in Italy’ story. Real opportunities exist for New Zealand businesses in the fashion, textile and luxury products sector, in addition to areas as diverse as food and beverage, food processing, and pharmaceuticals. In this way we grow together, by creating products that are exported to other markets. New Zealand companies are also targeting Italian end users with quality consumer goods and products that can deliver operational and other advantages in areas such as healthcare and utility management. Deeply integrated into the Asia-Pacific region through an existing network of FTAs, New Zealand also represents an ideal partner for countries such as Italy looking to expand into Asia and take advantage of significant new markets for your innovative and high-quality goods and services. There is much potential in front of us, and I look forward to further developing the dynamic relationship between our two nations. Hon Todd McClay Minister of Trade
HON TODD McCLAY Minister of Trade Minister for State Owned Enterprises Associate Minister of Foreign Affairs
On. Todd McClay Ministro del Commercio

NEW ZEALAND PHARMACEUTICALS www.nzp.com
New Zealand Pharmaceuticals Ltd (NZP) was established in 1971 to extract and purify biochemicals from by-products of the New Zealand meat processing industry. The company’s first products were bile acids extracted from bovine or ovine bile, to be used as pharmaceutical intermediates.
CONTACT JAMES BOYDELL +44 118 935 7214 james.boydell@nzp.co.nz
Since then NZP’s reputation for quality, reliability and service has allowed it to become one of the larger manufacturers and suppliers of these niche products to the global market. NZP now offers a range of biopharmaceutical products derived from both animal and plant extracts, which find application as pharmaceutical intermediates, active pharmaceutical ingredients (API’s) as well as in biotech, diagnostics and nutritional uses. Through collaboration and the acquisition of its UK subsidiary (Dextra), NZP has also developed a growing range of synthetic carbohydrate products and services to further broaden its therapeutic reach. NZP has recently made significant investments to expand its manufacturing capacity for bile acid intermediates and API’s and has also broadened its R&D capabilities to take advantage of the rejuvenation of interest in bile acid as therapeutic molecules. With around a third of our products being shipped into the EU, and given the EU’s history as an innovation centre, NZP considers this region a crucial market and location for our business, and is therefore keen to further develop EU links and collaborations.
