HELLO! BONJOUR! NI HAO! I’m Charlotte, and welcome to my portfolio!

Ambitious and extremely focused, Charlotte Poon is a determined and hardworking individual. With her passion for design, she has had the opportunity to work at a BlackBerry and an independent design consultancy. As an industrial design intern, she had the experience to work with client on product development using skills of ideation, CAD and creative problem solving. She continues to look for opportunities to further her interest in soft goods, performance wear and footwear design. Outside of the academics, Charlotte is an active blogger in the online fashion community, posting DIY projects and contributing to an online fashion magazine. With an interest in smart textiles and responsive technology, she likes to explore the gap between technology and fashion, where trends are interchanged and advancements in technology affect both industries. She would like to take her industrial design skills and create a change in the world. Fluent in English and knowledgeable in both French and Cantonese, she has a love for travelling and brings fresh point of view on design. When not designing, you can find her enjoying the outdoors either playing soccer or looking into a new scuba diving adventure.

WINTER RUNNIN

PERSONAL PROJECT, 2013 W E E K S FOOTWEAR DESIGN

NG

Canada is known to have one of THE best backyards in the world. For half of the year, this country experiences winter in the harshest form with snow, sub-zero temperatures, ice and slush. Many inviduals still brave the outdoors to experience what the Great White North has to offer. Running in the winter isn`t a stranger to many but there aren`t many great options out there that are lightweight, weatherproof and provide good traction.

MAIN CONCERNS TO ADDRESS

FUNCTIONAL WEATHER-PROOF

TRACTION

LAYERS

LIGHT WEIGHT

VISIBILITY

Runners in the winter are tough and determined individuals who demand high performance from their equipment. Some even took to screwing in screws from the hardware store because on the market spikes tended to get caught and twist the ankle.

“ I find screws work best, spikes on the market tend to be too long.

INTERCHANGABLE SOLE DEVELOPMENT

The thinking that an interchangable grip component can provide the necessary traction to ensure the best performance in certain conditions. For example: metal spikes are ideal for icy conditions but not for slush.

FORM & COLOUR EXPLORATIONS

Dynamic fit layer made from Stomatex, similar to neoprene, it provides the needed support and allows for breathability.

Interchangable lugs with spikes with rail and interlocking system

Reflective 3D printed nylon mesh pattern and reflective laces

Gortex membranes in the main body of the shoe

Toe and heel rubber caps

Lugs made of Icebug rubber for increased grip on slippery surfaces

FINAL DESIGN

Ankle cuff (continuation of inner layer of dynamic fit) preventing kick back of salt and snow

lunarlon cushioning in the heel

FINAL DESIGN PROPOSAL

HOW DOES THE BLADELESS DYSON FAN WORK?

INSIDE DYSON TECHNOLOGY

“Dyson Air Multiplier™ fans use Air Multiplier™ technology to amplify surrounding air, giving an uninterrupted stream of smooth air. Air from around and behind the machine is drawn into the airflow through the physical processes of inducement and entrainment.” - DYSON

HOW DOES THIS APPLY TO DIVE DRY? The advantages of going with a bladeless option is the constant airflow and minimization of injury. Also less power is needed to generate a larger flow of air thanks to Dyson’s patented Air Multiplication Technology.

DYLAN HORVATH

DIRECTOR, CORTEX DESIGN INC 416.828.1234 DHORVATH@CORTEX-DESIGN.COM “Charlotte is an extremely motivated design student. I had the pleasure of working with her after her first year of school, and she was a great self-starter. Charlotte was given tasks that required her to obtain new skills and knowledge to get the job done, like advanced surfacing and mechanical detailing that are not normally learned until much later in a student’s education. She persevered in obtaining the knowledge required to get the job done and was an effective team member when working beside our other senior designers. I would happily recommend Charlotte to others considering hiring her for internships, and will keep tabs on what I am sure will be a bright career.”

STEVE MACLEOD

CONTRACT INSTRUCTOR, CARLETON UNIVERSITY 613.809.1597 STEVEMACSTER@GMAIL.COM

“I had the pleasure of instructing Charlotte during several courses, at the Carleton School of Industrial Design in Ottawa, Canada. I have worked as an Industrial Designer for over eight years now and work as an instructor, under contract, for the school. Charlotte is always in the top five of her class – her work shows great understanding and artistic abilities. What is most impressive about Charlotte is the seemingly persistent calmness that pervades in her in the face the most challenging tasks. She has also developed an interesting design philosophy that translates well into modern product design and trends. Always positive and sociable, Charlotte will certainly excel in any team effort. Charlotte’s professionalism combined with the top-notch skills she’s learned at Carleton, will certainly help her towards this success. Add to this her persona and ability to carry through a project, from start to finish, will only ensure this. I highly recommend Charlotte towards a position as a Design Intern. “
