Bronco Volleyball 2016 CAL POLY POMONA VOLLEYBALL RECORD BOOK
ROSIE WEGRICH Head Coach 25th Season While it might not be so that Rosie Wegrich was born with a volleyball in her hands, one thing is certain -- the Southern California native has dedicated her entire professional career to the sport of college volleyball. She enters her 41st season at the collegiate level this fall and is the dean of the Cal Poly Pomona coaching staff with 2016 marking her 25th season as a Bronco. In the 2015 season, one in which the Green and Gold went 17-13 overall with a 12-8 mark in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), the Broncos advanced to the postseason in the conference’s first-ever postseason tournament. They topped San Francisco State in Round 1, but fell in the semifinals to No. 17 Sonoma State. The team was well-represented at the CCAA Awards Banquet as Nicoletta Stork was named Setter of the Year and Kristen Hamlin earned the title of Freshman of the Year. Wegrich’s squads continue to excel in the classroom, as the 2015 team combined for a grade point average of 3.07 through the 2014-15 academic year. Wegrich owns 734 career victories, a total that ranks fourth among active coaches at the Division II level and 18th among active coaches across all levels. A 3-1 win on Oct. 22, 2015 over Cal State East Bay on Breast Cancer Awareness Night at Kellogg Arena marked win No. 400 for Wegrich as a Bronco. Career win No. 700 came to her as a welcome birthday present on Oct. 31, 2013 as the Broncos beat Cal State Monterey Bay 3-1. In 2008, Cal Poly Pomona enjoyed its most successful season since 1997 when it reached the NCAA Pacific Regional final. The Broncos finished 20-8 overall and were ranked in the top 25 all season, finishing 14th. The team featured All-American Vanessa Williams. The Riverside native finished second in the nation in blocks/game and headlined a group of four All-CCAA performers: first-team members Williams and Jenna Young and second-team members Anne-Marie Hofmans and Jasmine Davis. Williams and Hofmans were joined on the NCAA Pacific Regional Tourney team by Elizabeth Diaz and Rafaela Rosa. The 2007 season saw the Broncos participate in the NCAA Tournament for the third time in four years, where they dropped a thrilling five-game match to rival Cal State Los Angeles in the NCAA Pacific Regional at Cal State San Bernardino. They finished 21-7 overall – Wegrich’s sixth 20-win season – and a 13-5 CCAA runner-up finish. Four individuals earned all-CCAA honors with Antoinette Kathol, Vanessa Williams, Jenna Young earning first-team honors. Brittany Harkey was named to the second team. Wegrich reached a career milestone during the 2006 season. The Broncos’ 3-0 victory over the Lumberjacks gave Wegrich her 600th career victory spread over four decades of proven success. She is only the seventh active coach in Division II to achieve that monumental status. Wegrich was named the CCAA Coach of the Year for the first time in 2005 after leading the Broncos to an unforgettable season. Cal Poly Pomona captured a share of its first conference title since 1990 and set program records for best start (19-0), most consecutive wins (19) and winning percentage. The Broncos vaulted into the national rankings for the first time since 1998 and climbed as high as sixth, their highest ranking since being rated fifth in 1992. Cal Poly
Pomona finished the season with a 24-3 overall record and seeded second in the Pacific Region. Cal Poly Pomona reached the NCAA playoffs in back-to-back years in 2004 and 2005. After a rare down year in 2001, Wegrich orchestrated a dramatic turnaround with 81 victories over a four-season span. The 81 wins – the Broncos were 2011 in 2002, 19-11 in 2003, 18-12 in 2004 and 24-3 in 2005 – are the most over a four-year stretch for Cal Poly Pomona since 1991-94. The 24 wins in 2005 were the most for the program since the Broncos were 24-8 in 1997. Cal Poly Pomona set a new program standard for conference wins with 16 and posted sweeps over perennial CCAA powers Cal State San Bernardino and UC San Diego. The Broncos also split five-game decisions with both Cal State L.A. and Cal State San Bernardino. The Broncos earned the No. 2 seed in the Pacific Region, but fell in a heartbreaking five-game match to Central Washington in the first round. Cal Poly Pomona finished the season ranked 15th in the nation, which was its highest national ranking to end a season since 1992. In 2004, the Broncos returned to the NCAA playoffs for the first time since 1997. Cal Poly Pomona endured six five-game matches in its first eight contests of the season and found itself with a 4-5 record after nine matches. The season turned around in a hurry and the Broncos rolled off a seven-match winning streak to get their season back on track. The Broncos finished third in the rugged CCAA and swept longtime rivals Cal State L.A. and Cal State Bakersfield in the same season for the first time since 1985. Cal Poly Pomona entered the playoffs as a No. 7 seed and fell to No. 2 seed Cal State San Bernardino in a hard-fought contest. The Broncos finished 2003 on an upswing, winning their final four matches for a second straight year, and narrowly missed reaching the NCAA Division II playoffs. Six teams from the Pacific Region advanced and the Broncos were rated seventh in the final poll. Cal Poly Pomona swept Cal State L.A. for the first time since 1996 and knocked off Cal State San Bernardino in a thrilling five-game match in Darlene May Gym while the Coyotes were ranked No. 1 in the nation. Tradition, success and pride are evident when it comes to Wegrich and Cal Poly Pomona volleyball. In her time at CPP, she has guided nine teams to the NCAA Tournament (1992-94, 1996-97, 2004-05 and 2007-08). During her reign, the Broncos have been honored with eight All-America awards, 18 all-region awards and 52 All-CCAA awards. Wegrich came to Pomona after a 17-year tenure at the NCAA Division I ranks. A winner from the beginning, Wegrich led the University of Minnesota to a 71-30-1 record in two years (1975-76) before heading to the University of Arizona for the next 15 years (1977-91). Under Wegrich’s tutelage, the Arizona volleyball team made 12 trips to post-season play, including a string of nine consecutive berths to the NCAA Tournament. After taking nationally-ranked (16th) Arizona to the post-season tournament for the 11th time in 1989, she was named the Northwest Region Coach of the Year by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. While at Arizona, she amassed a 258-229-9 record. Wegrich has coached two former United States National and Olympic team members, Melissa McLinden and Caren Kemner, two Canadian National team members as well as seven All-Americans. As a player, Wegrich competed collegiately for San Diego State where she captained the Aztecs. She also represented the USA in competition against Mexico and Canada and then embarked on a distinguished six-year career in the International Volleyball Association. A three-time recipient of the IVA’s Most Valuable Female Player Award (1977, 1978, 1979), Wegrich also was a member of the league’s All-Pro team for four years (1976-79). She earned her bachelor’s degree in kinesiology from the UCLA in 1975 and completed her master’s degree at the University of Arizona in 1992. During the summer of 2005, Wegrich was honored with a plaque on the Manhattan Beach Volleyball Walk of Fame. The plaque commemorated the 1970 doubles championship Wegrich won in a beach volleyball tournament with partner Christy Hahn.
