Welcome Address (Offi ce of the President)

Dear Colleagues, It feels like just yesterday we rounded up the 2012 Congress. Here we are again in very high spirits setting the ball rolling for the 2013 Congress. It is always such a delight being host to the finest group of men and women with brilliant ideas, who challenge themselves on a daily base, to give back to our motherland however way they can. We are all aware of the state of affairs in our country; there is no harm however in reminding ourselves of the changes we can make, individually and collectively. That has constantly been a driving force behind all the work we do at the CPS. The 2013 Congress will take us to a whole new level of implementing our dreams and aspirations for our country. Over the years we have had discussions on a wide range of issues, this year we focus on making this discussions a reality. Following the prevalent discussions and the vision of making Cameroon an emerging country over the next 25- 30 years, we as a people who love our country can only find concrete ways to be part of history in the making as we strategize with a view to foresee structural changes in our society. The challenges facing our country abound, and we all know them too well. Economic growth and employment are just a tip of the iceberg. Despite the gradual recovery from the devaluation of the CFA franc in 1994, Cameroon’s growth is still to find its strength in terms of its inner dynamics and the expected impact on the living conditions of the population. An analysis of the country’s growth factors reveals that its economy depends more than 50 per cent on Household and Sole Proprietor Businesses which constitute a sector comprising mostly informal units (notably agriculture and trade) with no guarantee of sustainable growth due to their generally fluctuating performances.Cameroon has been unable to develop a competitive industrial sector especially because of its poor performance in the global economy and lack of an operational potential at the domestic level. This problem is also compounded by distribution of the wealth generated. As a matter of fact, dividends on share capital continue to have an edge over salaries and other social contributions. There is hence a general outcry for strong growth with an equitable distribution of its fallouts.

the Diaspora. For in merging both our ideas and know how, we can begin to meet up with the many challenges our country faces; from economic to infrastructure to development, urban congestion, just to name a few. We all know that execution and implantation are always deal breakers to most projects. Having the vision is one thing, putting every strategy in place to ensure these projects are actually materialized will take more than just talking but a lot of doing. Thus it is our mission to be part of the emerging process for Cameroon. The vision for making Cameroon an emerging nation is more than apparent. The big questions are how do we even begin to implement these visions? How do we partnership with our Cameroon government to ensure that these projects are aptly, appropriately and efficiently put in place? The congress as usual is that forum through which we learn from the best, those strategies which will curb our socio-economic challenges and act as a springboard towards growth and development. “From Vision to Action – The Cameroonian Imperative” The Congress as you well know is also an opportunity to recognize Cameroonians making an impact around the world. The CPS Distinguished Awards recognizes Cameroonians for excellence in the sciences, the arts, for service to the world, for leadership and finally the Cameroonian of the Year. Past recipients have included Jacques-Greg Belobo, Gisele Yitamben, and Prof. Rose Gana Fomban Leke. Now is the time to put your ideas together and be ready to engage a cross-section of Cameroonians who are passionate about the holistic development of our country and are doing whatever it takes to move forward. The CPS believes strongly that through our collective efforts, sustainable development can be greatly accelerated and we can be proud of the changes that would have resulted from our direct actions. See you in Washington D.C. Denis A. Foretia, MD.MPH.MBA. President, CPS.

At the CPS, we absolutely believe there should exist a mutually beneficial relationship between the Cameroon government and
