CPUT AT A GLANCE
The Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) was established on 1 January 2005 when the Cape and Peninsula Technikon’s merged. This was part of a national process of transforming the higher education landscape in South Africa. The history of CPUT is, therefore, the history of the two merged institutions and goes as far back as 1920. After the promulgation of the Technikons Act in 1976, technical colleges were able to offer tertiary education in selected fields of study. In 1979, both colleges were legally established as technikons, and from 1993, were empowered to offer degrees: Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Technology.
CPUT is the only university of technology in the Western Cape, and is the largest university in the region. The Institution has six faculties focused on Applied Science, Business and Management Sciences, Education, Informatics and Design, Engineering and the Built Environment, and Health and Wellness Sciences.
The Institution is best known for its provision of service learning opportunities to its students. Service learning is a course-based, credit-bearing experience in which students participate in an organised service activity that meets identified community needs, and allows students to reflect on the service activity in such a way as to get further understanding of course content, a broader appreciation of the discipline, and an enhanced sense of civic responsibility.
CPUT offers nearly 100 careerfocused qualifications, and has two main campuses in Bellville and District Six; as well as the Granger Bay Campus with its Cape Town Hotel School and restaurant next to the worldrenowned V&A Waterfront in Cape Town, and campuses in Mowbray and Wellington.

RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS
Research into rooibos
The Applied Microbial and Health Biotechnology Institute (AMHBI) is involved in research on the effects of rooibos on cognitive health – specifically neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, cardiac structure, function and inflammation; highglucose-induced oxidative stress; and on UV-induced skin ailments.
PPE laboratory for research, industry and academic projects
A shortage of PPE was a critical problem faced by the country during early stages of the Covid-19 pandemic, due to challenges faced in certifying PPE materials, and a lack of laboratories to test the various forms of these materials. The aim of this project is to support local manufacturing of PPE to assist in South Africa’s Covid-19 response.
Development of sustainable, nutrition-sensitive marine aquaculture
Collaboration between the Functional Foods Research Unit (FFRU), Department of Food Science and Technology, Institut de Recherche pour le Developpement, Marine Biodiversity, Exploitation and Conservation (MARBEC University of Montpelier) and the South African Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, with the aim to characterise the nutritional value of aquatic species currently farmed or considered as aquaculture candidate species in South Africa.
Solar Desalination System
The Mechanical and Mechatronic Department is involved in a study to develop and assess the effectiveness of a solar desalination system based on thermal distillation. The system employs two seriesconnected evacuated tube solar collectors to provide thermal energy for the desalination process. The ultimate goal is to produce a distillate free from contaminants, addressing the water scarcity challenges in remote and water-scarce areas.
ACHIEVEMENTS
Jaime Scholz, who entered the competition as an Advanced Diploma in Interior Design student in the Department of Architectural Technology and Interior Design, was announced the first prize winner of the Accor Design Awards 2023 during an awards ceremony, held in Paris, France.
The South African Renewable Energy Technology Centre (SARETEC) based at CPUT, Eskom and the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP) have signed a partnership agreement for the development of the Komati Training Facility.
The University launched the Digital Literacy Project in 2022, with a contribution from BankSETA, as part of their Skills for the Future Programme.
The CPUT supa-pool women’s team clinched the gold medal after three days of facing up to tough challenges from the other four women’s teams.
In March 2022, CPUT hosted the first hybrid Association of International Education Administrators (AIEA) sponsored forum in Africa.
