TITLE: THE USE OF NANO-ENCAPSULATED PLANT EXTRACTS IN INHIBITING NON-ENZYMATIC BROWNING IN FRUIT CANNED IN JUICE
Thermally generated toxins are a major threat to food safety and security. Under certain conditions, ascorbic acid aggravates the spoilage, necessitating the search for alternative natural antioxidants to combat the formation of these toxins. Green rooibos (GR) extracts contain bioactive compounds synonymous with inhibiting non-enzymatic browning (NEB) reactions. In this study, the effect of betacyclodextrin in enhancing the extraction of GR bioactives with subsequent encapsulation was exploited. While native GR extracts inhibited the formation of NEB products in canned apples, the betacyclodextrin-encapsulated counterparts proved superior concerning total phenolic content, antioxidant activity, stability against moisture uptake, heat degradation and inhibition of hydroxymethyl furfural and furfural, both potential carcinogens.

TITLE: A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF THE EFFICIENCY OF ION EXCHANGE AND EXTRACTION CHROMATOGRAPHY FOR THE SEPARATION OF MILLIGRAM AMOUNTS OF SCANDIUM FROM GRAM AMOUNTS OF CALCIUM
The growing demand for scandium in various applications such as aerospace, electronics and the nuclear industry has led to the need to find more efficient and costeffective methods for its separation. The radioactive isotopes of scandium, in particular, Scandium-44 and Scandium-47 have generated interest for use in radiopharmaceuticals for both medical imaging and radiotherapy. Mrs Adonis compared the efficiency of two methods, namely ion exchange and extraction chromatography, for the separation of scandium from calcium. Findings from this study may be used for the separation and purification of scandium radioisotopes for medical applications in targeted radionuclide therapy of small tumours and cancer metastasis.

Calleb Duya’s thesis focused on development of sensors for detection of E. Coli and salmonella based on silver -Gold bimetallic nanoparticles. The nanoparticles were chemically and electrochemically synthesised, characterised (optical, morphological, electrochemical) and application for electrochemical sensors of bacteria’s assessed. Clearly assessing each metal using a nano impact approach. Cyclic voltammetry (CV), differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) and Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were evaluated using Glass carbon electrode (GCE) and the interdigitated array electrode (IDAE). The sensors were validated and tests in real water. The work has been presented in conferences; three publications, two under review and one published in bioelectrochemistry.

TITLE: SPECTROSCOPIC DETERMINATION OF SELECTED RARE EARTH ELEMENTS (LANTHANUM, NEODYMIUM AND DYSPROSIUM) IN ELECTRONIC WASTE SAMPLES
Rare Earth Elements (REEs) are nowadays critical elements required in technological accessories. Their presence in electronic waste leads to environmental pollution. Therefore, there is a constant necessity for data on the fate and transport of these pollutants, requiring reliable fast analytical methods. Martin Makombe developed a novel alkaline fusion method that is superior to the traditional mineral acid digestion procedures. He further studied the disintegration, solubility, precipitation, and permeation of REEs in the soil and aquatic environment. The methods established in this work were recommended by his examiners as it provides sustainable treatment options of electronic waste.

TITLE: NEPENTHES MIRABILIS PLANT DIGESTIVE ENZYMES FOR SEMI-DELIGNI-HOLO-CELLULOLYSIS OF MIXED AGRO-WASTE
A proof of concept for semi-de-ligni-holo-cellulolysis, a term developed to describe agro-waste pretreatment as a partial delignification and holocellulolysis process was done. The study further proposed that pitcher fluids from the monkey cups of Nepenthes species and some plant exudates can be used solely to perform mixed agro-waste pretreatment for the extraction of fermentable hydrolysates while minimising total phenolic compounds. Several novel enzymes in Nepenthes mirabilis pitcher fluids were identified as being suitable for sole use in agro-waste pretreatment.
Justine Oma Angadam received the CPUT Vice-Chancellor’s Prestigious Achievers Award, and has published five manuscripts from the study.
DEAN’S MEDAL RECIPIENT
YORK STEYN
Diploma in Horticulture
York Steyn was born in Mossel bay in 1999, and matriculated in 2017 from Paarl Gymnasium High School. At the time, he was unsure about what he wanted to study, and took a gap year, after which he enrolled to study Law at Unisa in 2019. During that time, he attended the Open Day at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, and decided to study Horticulture in the Faculty of Applied Sciences. He registered for the Diploma in Horticulture the following year, and completed it in 2022, having scored 25 distinctions out of 27 subjects, and an overall average of 85,7%. He is currently busy completing the Advanced Diploma in Horticulture, and would like to pursue postgraduate studies in the near future.
Mr Steyn acknowledges the role that God plays in his daily life, and says that he is extremely grateful to his parents (especially his mother, whom he calls his Rock) for their guidance and motivation. He encourages other students to show compassion, work hard, do independent research, talk with experienced people, and be tenacious and passionate in their field.

TITLE: THE SUSTAINABILITY OF FRANCHISE CRICKET IN SELECTED PROVINCES IN SOUTH AFRICA
Hansraj Singh’s thesis considered the sustainability of franchise cricket in selected provinces in South Africa. With the central thrust of the study being the determination of the impact of the franchise system on sustainability of amateur and franchise cricket in selected provinces in South Africa, the study adopted a quasi-quantitative deductive approach, two-hundred and eight data samples were collected from administrators, managers, coaches, umpires, and players within the South African cricket ecosystem. In analysing the data, Bivariate correlations analysis was implemented in tandem with Chi-square tests revealing that neither amateur nor professional franchise cricket was currently financially sustainable without securing funding mechanisms outside Cricket South Africa subsidisation. Significantly, the study highlights the need for structural adjustments and greater collaboration between cricket management and public-private sector organisations if sustainability were to be attained. The findings also noted an improvement in the quality of the domestic competition. Hansraj has published one article from the data and two further articles are currently in development for DHET accredited publication outlets.

TITLE: CONTEMPORARY CURRICULA FOR PROFESSIONAL MEETING AND EVENT MANAGEMENT IN SOUTH AFRICA: STRATEGIES AND RESPONSES TO INDUSTRY REQUIREMENTS
Esti Venske contributed to the body of knowledge in the field of business event education through seven published research outputs (five journal articles and two publications in conference proceedings). The study as a whole is distinctive for its focused approach to curriculum development issues in business event management education in the South African context. Esti mapped the findings of her research onto the international Event Management Body of Knowledge (EMBOK) model to develop relevant and responsive curricula that enhances graduate readiness and employability in professional meeting and event management. The study has advocated closer industry-academic collaboration and partnership to advance the relevance of vocational education for the benefit of a growing industry, with a strong focus on the embedment of sustainable development goals (SDGs) in education.
