When you initially signed up for your specific course, the majority of you did not anticipate that you would be studying remotely, rarely seeing your classmates or lecturers in person. You probably also did not expect to graduate virtually, instead of in a large, bustling hall filled with excited graduates and relatives. While your path to graduation may have been unusual, it does not diminish the extraordinary effort it took to get here. Today, we salute you and your loved ones who supported you on your higher education journey.

Geluk aan die graduerende klas van 2020. Welgedaan! Julle het koers gehou deur ‘n moeilike jaar en het bo die uitdagings van die Covid-19 pandemie uitgestyg.
Toe julle aanvanklik ingeskryf het vir julle spesifieke kursusse, het die meerderheid van julle nie verwag om beperk te word tot afstandsonderrig en om glad nie julle klasmaats of dosente in persoon te sien nie. Julle het sekerlik ook nie verwag om virtueel graad te vang, in stede van in ‘n groot
saal gevul met opgewonde graduandi en familie nie. Julle reis tot vandag was nou wel ongewoon, maar dit neem hoegenaamd niks weg van julle uitsonderlike inspanning om tot hier te kom nie. Vandag salueer ons jou en jou geliefdes wie jou op hierdie reis na hoër onderwys ondersteun het.
Die wêreld is vandag anders, maar dis ook vol geleenthede. Daar was nog nooit ‘n beter tyd om ‘n gegradueerde vol idees te wees nie. Hier by CPUT is ons oogmerk nie net om studente te produseer wie in drie tot vyf jaar kan graad vang nie. Dit is eerder om

TITLE: GREEN SYNTHESIS, CHARACTERISATION AND APPLICATION OF METAL NANOPARTICLES USING CHEMICAL CONSTITUENTS OF SELECTED SOUTH
AFRICAN PLANTS
This study examined the synthesis, characterisation and applications of metal nanoparticles using South African plants. The study focused on the effectiveness of the chemical constituents of the plants as powerful reducing and stabilising agents in gold and silver nanoparticle formation. The main contribution of this study is the discovery of uni-capped metal nanoparticles as potential antidiabetic and antimicrobial agents. These nanohybrids showed better activities when compared to standard reference drugs. The green synthesis from natural chemical compounds therefore presented novel bioactive nanoparticles that are reported for the first time, which may have applications in the development of new therapeutic agents.
TITLE: RADIONUCLIDES AND TRACE ELEMENTS OF RED PALM OIL, WATER, AND SOIL FROM PALM PLANTATIONS
This study examined radionuclides and trace elements in red palm oil, water and soil from palm oil plantations. It revealed the concentrations of metals and radionuclides and their potential effects on human health and the environment. The study has contributed significantly to new knowledge in the area of food, water and soil contamination and human health. Six articles have been published in accredited journals from this study.

TITLE: SORPTION BEHAVIOUR OF HEAVY METALS ON A DITHIZONEIMPREGNATED POLYMER RESIN
André Spies holds a BSc degree from UWC, and a MTech degree from CPUT. He taught Physical Science for 16 years at FET level before joining CPUT as a lecturer in 2005.
André’s thesis reports on the design of a new solid phase extraction system through the modification of a polymer resin with a chelating agent. He investigated the factors that maximise the selectivity of the system and evaluated a few mathematical models to describe the mechanisms by which metals interact with the functionalised resin. The research has application in the remediation of toxic heavy metals from industrial wastewater and in the isolation of radionuclides for use in targeted radiation therapy.

Diploma in Biotechnology
Miengah Allie was born and raised in Cape Town, and attended Darul Islam High School, where she represented the body of the Eco Club.
In 2017, she registered for a Diploma in Biotechnology at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, and received a distinction aggregate by obtaining 20/21 distinctions over her three years of study.
She worked as a microbiologist for more than a year, and decided to go back to university to complete her advanced year in Biotechnology.
Miengah also serves as a tutor in her community, where she teaches children as part of her passion.
