Congratulations to the graduating class of 2020. Well done on staying the course through a difficult year, and rising up to the challenges presented by the Covid-19 pandemic.
BOODSKAP
Beste Graduandi
When you initially signed up for your specific course, the majority of you did not anticipate that you would be studying remotely, rarely seeing your classmates or lecturers in person. You probably also did not expect to graduate virtually, instead of in a large, bustling hall filled with excited graduates and relatives. While your path to graduation may have been unusual, it does not diminish the extraordinary effort it took to get here. Today, we salute you and your loved ones who supported you on your higher education journey.
VAN DIE VISEKANSELIER
Geluk aan die graduerende klas van 2020. Welgedaan!
The world is different now, but it is also ripe with opportunities, and there has never been a more opportune time to be a graduate bursting with ideas. At CPUT, our aim is not simply to produce students who graduate after three to five years, rather it is to produce principled future leaders, who are prepared to change the world. Stay connected to the Institution so that we can support your success as you do just that.
Kind Regards.
Vice-Chancellor
Prof Chris Nhlapo

TITLE: EXPERIENCES OF TRANSFORMATIVE LEARNING IN FASHION DESIGN EDUCATION
This research identified aspects of transformative learning in fashion design and teaching practice through the lens of reflection – in the South African context. It explored the effects of transformative learning on graduates in the workplace, through building on the Learning Activities Survey (LAS), to develop the Learning Activities Narrative (LAN) model. The main and original contribution of Anna Vlok’s study is located in the domain of diffraction, which is an advanced, iterative and methodological expansion of the reflective model, which culminated in the LAN model. The contribution includes conceptual discussions of the connections and interruptions between diffraction and reflection. Findings highlighted that traditional perspectives of personal and emotional transformation, social adaptability and disciplinary knowledge were changed contextually through interaction with peers and educators, which in turn transformed graduates’ entry into the work environment, and built resilience and adaptability in professional and interpersonal interactions.

TITLE: DESIGN FOR HEALTH: CO-DESIGNING HEALTH INFORMATION SERVICES IN UNDERSERVED CONTEXTS IN AFRIKA
Ralitsa Diana Debrah explored designerly strategies to unearth complexities surrounding healthcare services in underserved contexts in Afrika. Service Design and sensemaking theories were used as adjustable lenses to gain insights and obtain views from the perspective of health intermediaries in Grabouw, South Africa. The study’s novelty is in employing situated design methods in a transdisciplinary domain, leading to contributions such as: a sensemaking framework; design probes and toolkits; and prototype multimodal cryptographer – a co-designed health information system. Projections indicate that future implementation of the proposed healthcare system will greatly improve healthcare services, consequently accelerating progress towards meeting health-related UN SDGs within South Africa, and the continent at large.

TITLE: COLLABORATION AS A PROFESSIONAL VALUE ATTRIBUTE IN URBAN PLANNING AND PLANNING EDUCATION: A SOCIAL PRACTICE PERSPECTIVE
Although the importance of professional value attributes is recognised in contemporary literature, no focus is placed on understanding what it means to be a collaborative practitioner within the current neoliberal and technocratic environment. Belinda Verster’s study responded to this shortcoming by engaging theories from social practices, collaborative planning and collaborative learning, and proposed a conceptual framework – the ‘Collaboration as a Social Practice (CoSoP) framework’ – to foreground a valuebased conception of collaboration.
A qualitative research study was undertaken to concretise the highly theoretical CoSoP framework by developing and using the conversational exploration method to engage expert collaborative practitioners. This resulted in the enrichment of the CoSoP framework with fifteen themes and five constructs which were put forward as foundational in any collaborative endeavour.
