Congratulations to the graduating class of 2020. Well done on staying the course through a difficult year, and rising up to the challenges presented by the Covid-19 pandemic.
BOODSKAP
Beste Graduandi
When you initially signed up for your specific course, the majority of you did not anticipate that you would be studying remotely, rarely seeing your classmates or lecturers in person. You probably also did not expect to graduate virtually, instead of in a large, bustling hall filled with excited graduates and relatives. While your path to graduation may have been unusual, it does not diminish the extraordinary effort it took to get here. Today, we salute you and your loved ones who supported you on your higher education journey.
VAN DIE VISEKANSELIER
Geluk aan die graduerende klas van 2020. Welgedaan!
The world is different now, but it is also ripe with opportunities, and there has never been a more opportune time to be a graduate bursting with ideas. At CPUT, our aim is not simply to produce students who graduate after three to five years, rather it is to produce principled future leaders, who are prepared to change the world. Stay connected to the Institution so that we can support your success as you do just that.
Kind Regards.
Vice-Chancellor
Prof Chris Nhlapo
beginselvaste toekomstige leiers te skep wie bereid is om die wêreld te verander. Behou kontak met CPUT sodat ons julle sukses hierin kan ondersteun.

RHEOLOGY AND STABILITY OF OIL-IN-WATER EMULSIONS STABILISED WITH AFRICAN CATFISH MUCILAGE
Adebanji Oluwole investigated the utilisation of African catfish mucilage (ACM) as an emulsifier in stabilising oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion. ACM contains amphiphilic proteins that interfaced simultaneously with polar and nonpolar materials, thereby delaying shear-thinning, leading to structural stability (consistency) of O/W emulsions applicable in nutraceuticals (foods) and cosmetics (personal-care) products. ACM can be used in the formulation of controlled-release drugs, as the mucoadhesive nature of ACM reduces the speed of drug absorption. His project contributes to conserving and sustainable use of the oceans, seas and marine resources through the utilisation of African catfish waste.

TITLE: IN-SITU CHARACTERISATION OF THE INSULATOR LEAKAGE CURRENT OF HIGH VOLTAGE DIRECT CURRENT TRANSMISSION LINES
The research objective was the characterisation of the leakage current (LC) found on high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission lines to enable future design optimisation of HVDC lines. A novel DC LC sensor was developed, which determines the current indirectly by measuring the magnetic field associated with it. This new sensor eliminates background noise from the measurement, for improved measurement integrity. Another important contribution of the work is the measurement of the actual leakage currents on the Cahora Bassa HVDC line as a case study. Such a comprehensive LC characterisation has been never been made on this strategically important transmission line, and very little literature is available for practical measurements made on other operational HVDC lines. The aspect of comparing the performance of both in-service glass and composite insulators on the same tower and with the same weather conditions is in itself novel and an important contribution to the collective engineering knowledge on HVDC transmission. The output of this research includes one accredited journal, an artefact, and six peer reviewed international conference publications.

ACCOUNTABILITY FOR HARMONIC DISTORTION ACROSS A RING MAIN NETWORK
Harmonic distortion, which is a challenge to measure, due to multiple harmonic sources connected at the point of common coupling (PCC), should be part of the investigation criteria when power system equipment fails. Harmonic source detection is thus a crucial area of ongoing research. A novel and economically viable solution based on the method of direction of active power flow, was developed using a benchmark IEEE PES test system, DigSilent modelling and an industrial network for validation. Seven accredited journal and conference papers, and one book chapter was published from this research.

TITLE: USE OF SOLAR ENERGY TO CONTROL THE ENVIRONMENT FOR AQUAPONICS IN LOW-INCOME COMMUNITIES
The research led to the design and development of a prototype Modular Solar Powered Aquaponics System. The system makes use of solar energy such as photovoltaics (PVs) generating electricity and solar thermal energy to heat the aqueous medium. The use of this renewable energy improves the prototype’s environment, encouraging fauna and flora to flourish for human consumption. The prototype combines an intense vegetable and fish farming production system with potential to reduce water and land usage as compared to traditional farming methods. The research endeavoured to address the possibility of combining existing and new technologies to empower low-income communities.

YSKANDAR HAMAM
Honorary Doctorate in Doctor of Engineering in Electrical Engineering
Chancellor, I have the honour to present for the award of the degree of Doctor of Engineering, honoris causa, Yskandar Hamam, for his indisputable contribution during recent years to the training of South African students and the promotion of South African universities for which he has worked as a member of the French South African Institute of Technology, known as F’SATI.
Faculty of Engineering & the Built Environment
Born in Haïfa (Palestine) on 23 February 1943, Yskandar Hamam spent his childhood and adolescence in Lebanon where his family had to take refuge. He received his Bachelor of Electrical Engineering degree from the American University of Beirut in 1966, and the Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology in 1970 and 1972 respectively. Finally, he was awarded the “Diplôme d’Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches” degree, the highest national diploma of Higher Education in France, from the Université des Sciences et Technologies de Lille in 1998.
Hamam conducted research activities and lectured in England, Brazil, Lebanon, Belgium and France. He was the Head of the Control Department and the Dean of the Faculty with ESIEE Paris, France. He is an active member of modelling and simulation societies, and was the President of the European Federation of Simulation Societies, EUROSIM. He is also Life Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
A major technical contribution during his research career is the development of a water and gas network analysis method, which has replaced previous methods and is now a reference for the analysis of piping networks.
In 2007, Hamam joined F’SATI at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) as Scientific Director, and then also at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology in 2008. He remained in these positions until December 2012. He is currently appointed as Emeritus Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at TUT and Emeritus Professor at ESIEE-Paris, France. He retains an active involvement in the further development of F’SATI.
Of the 57 doctorate students graduated under his supervision, 36 are in South Africa, and many of them are now involved in academic institutions in South Africa.
Yskandar Hamam has co-authored four books and 40 chapters in edited books. He has also authored or co-authored more than 400 papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals and in peer-reviewed conference proceedings.
Finally, on a more personal level, he is married to Annie Johanet, and is the father of 3 children and grandfather of 8 grandchildren.
