Congratulations to the graduating class of 2020. Well done on staying the course through a difficult year, and rising up to the challenges presented by the Covid-19 pandemic.
BOODSKAP
Beste Graduandi
When you initially signed up for your specific course, the majority of you did not anticipate that you would be studying remotely, rarely seeing your classmates or lecturers in person. You probably also did not expect to graduate virtually, instead of in a large, bustling hall filled with excited graduates and relatives. While your path to graduation may have been unusual, it does not diminish the extraordinary effort it took to get here. Today, we salute you and your loved ones who supported you on your higher education journey.
VAN DIE VISEKANSELIER
Geluk aan die graduerende klas van 2020. Welgedaan!
The world is different now, but it is also ripe with opportunities, and there has never been a more opportune time to be a graduate bursting with ideas. At CPUT, our aim is not simply to produce students who graduate after three to five years, rather it is to produce principled future leaders, who are prepared to change the world. Stay connected to the Institution so that we can support your success as you do just that.
Kind Regards.
Vice-Chancellor
Prof Chris Nhlapo
beginselvaste toekomstige leiers te skep wie bereid is om die wêreld te verander. Behou kontak met CPUT sodat ons julle sukses hierin kan ondersteun.

TITLE: DEATH AND DYING PATIENTS: EXPERIENCES AND COPING MECHANISMS OF UNDERGRADUATE DIAGNOSTIC RADIOGRAPHY STUDENTS DURING WORKPLACE LEARNING
The study examined undergraduate diagnostic radiography students’ experiences and coping with death and dying patients during workplace learning. The study found a three-phase cyclical relationship between the participants’ experiences and coping, which are influenced by person- and context-related factors. The original contribution of the study comes from the development of the Education and Empowerment for Coping (EEC) support strategies which aims to address the education and training needs of undergraduate students to cope effectively with death and dying patient experiences in the clinical setting. One article and four conference presentations, nationally and internationally, emanated from this work thus far.

TITLE: MICRORNA PROFILING IN SOUTH AFRICAN INDIVIDUALS WITH HYPERTENSION AND ABSOLUTE BLOOD PRESSURE LEVELS
This study explored epigenetic avenues as possible alternatives for the diagnosis of hypertension. Employing next generation sequencing and quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction, the study showed dysregulation of 30 microRNAs in hypertensive individuals relative to the normotensives. Furthermore, two novel microRNAs whose expression in blood was associated with clinical blood pressure parameters were identified. Our findings provide evidence of microRNA dysregulation in hypertension in an African population, and suggest that these dysregulated microRNAs, through their effects on blood pressure regulation pathways, are involved in the pathogenesis of hypertension. Owing to their differential expression according to hypertension status and correlation of their expression with clinical blood pressure parameters, may be targeted for diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic purposes in hypertension.

TITLE: HEPATO-RENAL, CARDIAC AND REPRODUCTIVE EFFECT OF PHYLLANTHUS AMARUS LEAF EXTRACT IN STREPTOZOTOCIN-INDUCED DIABETIC MALE WISTAR RATS AND ANTITYROSINASE
In a fructose-streptozotocin-induced diabetic animal model, the study examined the effects of Phyllanthus amarus aqueous extract on the liver, kidney, heart and testes in male Wistar rats. Its in vitro cytotoxic, phytoestrogenic, antioxidant and antityrosinase actions on mouse Sertoli and breast cancer cell lines were also assessed. The study provides useful information on the dosage, efficacy and potential beneficial or harmful effects of the extract on biological models which were previously lacking. The study made significant and original contribution to knowledge in reference to the treatment and management of diabetes and its complications. Also, at lower concentration, the extract elicited Sertoli cell proliferation, serving as an excellent agent against breast cancer.

TITLE: MICRORNA PROFILING AND VALIDATION IN MIXED ANCESTRY INDIVIDUALS IN SOUTH
AFRICA
This study aimed at exploring the use of microRNA expression analysis as a potential screening and management-tool for dysglycaemia, in a South African population with a high prevalence of undiagnosed diabetes. The microRNAs in question exhibited unique expression patterns in varied glycaemic states, as well as positive diagnostic capabilities for prediabetes, with miR-126-3p and -182-5p outperforming the HbA1c. The first endeavour of its kind in an African setting, findings may potentially contribute to the use of microRNAs as therapeutic targets in diabetes risk screening and management strategies, to circumvent the growing burden of the disease in Africa.
