Congratulations to the graduating class of 2022. You are the first class to graduate in person after two years of virtual ceremonies. It is a fitting reward, considering that when you initially signed up for your specific
course, the majority of you did not anticipate studying remotely and rarely seeing your classmates or lecturers in person. Well done on staying the course through a difficult period, and rising up to the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic.
You have persevered through unprecedented times to succeed, and I hope that today marks the start of a lifetime of achievements, both personally and professionally. By graduating from CPUT you have already set yourself up for success because you join an alumni network of thousands of graduates around
BOODSKAP VAN DIE VISEKANSELIER
Beste Graduandi
Geluk aan die graduerende klas van 2022. Julle is die eerste klas wie in persoon graad vang na twee jaar se virtuele seremonies. Dit is so gepas.
the country and the globe. One day you may also be in a position to open doors for a graduate, and I hope that you will look out for fellow CPUT alumni and give them a work place opportunity.
At CPUT, our aim is to produce future leaders who are going to change the world. Stay connected to the Institution so that we can support you as you do
Kind regards
Vice-Chancellor
Prof Chris Nhlapo

TITLE: THE ROLE OF GOLD NANOPARTICLES SYNTHESIZED USING EXTRACTS OF CYCLOPIA INTERMEDIA IN THE ANTICANCER EFFICACY OF DOXORUBICIN
This study investigated the combination effect of gold nanoparticles synthesized by using Cyclopia intermedia and doxorubicin in in vitro model of colorectal cancer. The study centres on the ability of biogenic gold nanoparticles to re-sensitize human colon cells (Caco-2 cells) to doxorubicin. The findings from this study showed that the combination of the biogenic gold nanoparticles and doxorubicin caused increased sensitivity and significant cell death in Caco-2 cells through rapid depletion of Adenosine 5’-triphosphate (ATP) levels, reactive oxygen species (ROS) reduction, mitochondrial membrane depolarization, and induction of DNA fragmentation. This study therefore presents a novel therapy in the management of cancer, particularly colorectal cancer. Two articles from the study have been published in high-impact accredited journals.
DEAN’S MEDAL RECIPIENT
FADZISAI MAKONYONGA
BTech Nursing Science – Average of 82,6%
Ms Makonyonga is a Zimbabwean with formal refugee status in the Republic of South Africa. She matriculated at the St Francis of Assisi High School in Zimbabwe in 1998, with eight distinctions out of ten subjects. During 2014, she obtained a Master’s Degree in Research Psychology from the University of the Western Cape, but it was a career in Nursing which was her ultimate calling and dream.
Ms Makonyonga has three young children who all require her attention when she is not studying. She often had to accompany her minor son to hospital during the winter months, as he suffers from severe asthma, which often resulted in hospitalisations. Despite all these stumbling blocks, she diligently applied herself to her studies and her patients, and maintained an above 83% average in all her subjects and work integrated learning.
Ms Makonyonga is an example to all students; she focuses on what she wants to achieve, and does not allow the hurdle in front of her to deter her from her goals. She is currently working as a registered nurse in the surgical ward at Vincent Pallotti hospital.
VICE-CHANCELLOR’S MEDAL RECIPIENT
ELZANE BISHOP
BSc in Diagnostic Radiography – 86%
Elzane is a 23-year-old from the small town of Lutzville in the Western Cape, with big dreams for the future. She was fortunate enough to matriculate at Lutzville High School in 2016, where hard work, participation and good values were part of her schooling.
Elzane enrolled for a BSc Diagnostic Radiography in 2018, after the profession chose her. She is currently doing her community service year as a diagnostic radiographer at Karl Bremer Hospital. Community work and upliftment is a passion for her, and she hopes she can use her training and skills to better the lives of other people. “It is a great honour to have been selected for the Vice-Chancellor’s medal.” Elzane is grateful for the guidance from her Lord and Saviour, as well as for the support of her family and fellow classmates who had partaken on this journey with her. She thanks her lecturers and CPUT for providing her with the opportunity to be rewarded for her hard work.
Her personal motto is: “Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do.” – Pele
