Vicky Holland finished in 26th position at the London 2012 Olympics after crashing on the bike stage. She hit the deck hard and got straight back up in pursuit, but despite her efforts she couldn’t quite catch the pack. Originally from Gloucester, Vicky is based in Swansea and spends some time in Loughborough, where she went to University. She previously trained with Darren Smith’s international training group all around the world.
Lucy Hall Lucy established herself as one of the fastest swimmers in triathlon after her performance at the London 2012 Olympics, where she exited the Serpentine first after the swim. She made her senior debut in the Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Series in 2011 - and exited the water first on three occasions (Hamburg, Lausanne and Yokohama). She is well known in France, where she races in the French Grand Prix and is named “la Sirène” or “mermaid”. She won the National Junior Aquathon when she was 13 and was selected to represent Great Britain in the European Youth Triathlon Championships in Italy, Finland and Spain where she took gold in 2006 and bronze in 2007 as part of relay teams. Lucy was selected as part of Team GB for the London 2012 Olympic Games in June 2012 her first Games. She competed alongside Vicky Holland and Helen Jenkins in Hyde Park on Saturday 4 August. Lucy is a member of the UK Sport Lottery funded British Triathlon World Class Podium Potential Squad and is currently studying at Loughborough College for a foundation degree in Sports Science and Management.

A comfortable saddle means you can ride longer. ISM has the solution. Our saddles are designed to support your sit bones and pubic rami bones (pelvic bone structure), the way nature intended. Without a “nose”, ISM saddles do not put pressure on your soft tissue area (perineal region) and maintain a healthy blood flow through this area, eliminating pain and numbness. Roofing Racers Raising the Roof for Charity
Now in its eighth consecutive year, Roofing Racers represents a voluntary collection of teams and individuals made up of all walks of the roofing and construction industry who come together each year to take part in the prestigious Virgin Active London Triathlon.
Participants from last year’s Roofing Racers share the podium to toast their success.
Organised by SIG Roofing & Roofline - the leading supply chain experts on roofing materials in the UK - and sponsored by a variety of companies, Roofing Racers presents a wonderful and rare opportunity for everyone in the industry to come together and join in the spirit of the competition, reaping the rewards of fun, friendship and camaraderie – as well as getting supremely fit! Open to all ages and backgrounds within the roofing industry including contractors, trade press, manufacturers, trade associations and distributors; everyone is welcome to join Roofing Racers, including first timers, sports enthusiasts and even the Triathlon elite. For sporting fanatics, the course can be completed as an individual, but for those who prefer to work as a team, the disciplines may be shared amongst three people. For those who are not quite up to the challenge of running, swimming and cycling, Roofing Racers also welcomes friends, family and colleagues to wave flags and cheer and shout, as well as raising funds along the way. There’s also a special evening event at the Tower Hilton Hotel, London where everyone can get together to celebrate their achievements. As well as a fun

“spoof” awards ceremony, there’s great food and non-stop dancing. Commenting on the success of Roofing Racers, Marketing Manager at SIG Roofing Supplies, Stuart Base says: “Being part of Roofing Racers provides the rare opportunity to break down the barriers of competition and come together as a united industry. At the same time, it helps raise money for two charities that are dear to many peoples’ hearts.” continued on page 14

Macmillan Cancer Support and Great Ormond Street Hospital are Roofing Racers’ two nominated charities and indeed, over the last eight years, the team has raised well over £250,000 for these two worthwhile causes who rely heavily on donations and financial support to continue their great work. Roofing Racers is especially proud to know that Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) is already benefiting from a new Neurosciences Centre thanks to its ‘Raising the Roof’ scheme. It also helped contribute to the necessary funding to complete a new Children’s Medical Centre which provides modern facilities for all inpatients, enabling parent or carer to stay comfortably by a child’s bedside. However, with over £50 million needed every year to help give hope to very . sick children and their families, GOSH needs ongoing support. With one in three of us likely to suffer from cancer, it’s likely that we will need the help and support provided by Macmillan nurses at sometime in our lives. Despite providing the optimum practical, medical and financial support and pushing for better cancer care, 98% of the income for Macmillan Cancer Support relies on donations and every penny counts towards making a difference. Commenting on the past support from Roofing Racers, Macmillan Cancer Support states: “We are extremely grateful for ‘Roofing Racers’ continued support. The money raised by everyone’s hard work will help us do even more to improve the lives of people affected by cancer. It could pay for the build costs of ten Macmillan Information Points, help run a large Macmillan information centre for several months or pay for 10,000 audio versions of the cancer guide. This would be impossible without the help of people like ‘Roofing Racers’.” Taking part in this world famous Triathlon is an experience that is difficult to put into words. It has everything,

from drama to competition and even heroism. . For Roofing Racers, however, it has camaraderie in spades and every team member is proud to . fly the flag for the roofing and construction industry, as well as being able to raise significant sums for charity. This year will be the eighth year in a row that we have put forward a team for Roofing Racers. We have such fun on the day and knowing that this event always helps raise vital funds for extremely worthwhile causes, makes it even more rewarding. enthuses Dave Maginnis, Managing Director of BriggsAmasco - the UK’s leading national industrial and commercial roofing company.
Marketing Manager at SIG Roofing Supplies, Stuart Base concludes: “There aren’t many industries that can lay claim to a united team of individuals. Since its inception in 2006, Roofing Racers has grown phenomenally in popularity and this year will see over 154 members take part in the Virgin Active London Triathlon. Our thanks go to all who take part and support this event including the other generous sponsors - Roofex, NFRC, ALM, Danosa, Floplast, Icopal, Marley Eternit, Masco UK Window Group, Redland, SIG Roofing & Roofline, Scott Bader, Klober, IKO Group, Briggs Amasco, SR Timber, Steadmans and Sandtoft. Here’s hoping we raise the roof on this year’s charity donations!”

he ZV7 Energy Gels contain 51g of carbohydrate (double most competing gels). Taking just two gels per hour gives the 100g of carbohydrate needed to maximise performance. The Caffeine Energy Gel takes the highly effective Energy Gel formula and supercharges it with a synergistic blend of Caffeine and Tyrosine. The 160mg of caffeine presses the accelerator pedal, reducing effort during training and racing, while tyrosine puts mental fuel in the tank. Each gel delivers the added kick needed to lift focus, reaction and performance to a different level!

facing the world
Nine year old Triny had a fast growing bone tumour that made everyday life incredibly difficult. She had been excluded from school as a result of her condition and her mother Sarah was repeatedly told by local Doctors that there was nothing they could do and that Triny would very likely die soon. We heard about Triny’s case and as a result of life changing surgery by Facing the World, Triny is now a lively, gregarious youngster who simply cannot wait to get back to school so she can study hard and become a Teacher. Facing the World helps children like Triny from all over the world and gives them the opportunity to make their own future.

Race Information ‘Swim’ The Swim Wetsuit *A wetsuit is compulsory* A wetsuit is compulsory and it is you responsibility to ensure that you have one on race day.
*Do not use Petroleum based lubricants (e.g. vaseline) as these damage the suit* Swim Start
The Royal Victoria Dock
Having collected and attached your timing chip and racked your bike you should arrive at Swim Assembly a minimum of 20 minutes before your wave start time. (It will take approximately G R OSwim UP 5 minutes to walk from TransitionA NtoI M Gthe Assembly).
The water is tested against EU bathing standards; however we would still advise you to be in good health and to try and avoid swallowing the water, as swimmers may be more susceptible to infection through immune suppression.
At Swim Assembly you will be given a swim cap which identifies your wave start and given some important tips and advice.
Swim Safety
You may be in the water for up to 5 minutes
before your start. Use this time to assess the WWW.THELONDONTRIATHLON.CO.UK conditions, practise your swim technique and prepare mentally for the race.
The route will be marked by buoys and canoe lifeguards will be on hand to guide the wave. You should also identify tall landmarks that can keep you on course, so as to avoid weaving and swimming further than you need to!
Swim Exit
The water safety team, provided by Swim Safety Ltd, will consist of fully qualified lifeguards in kayaks and rescue boats as well as bank based lifeguards on pontoons. All lifeguards are members of either the BCU Lifeguards or Surf Lifesaving GB. If this is your first triathlon, or swimming is not your strongest discipline, we recommend that you position yourself towards the back or the side of the wave. It may add a few seconds to your time, but it will enable you to get into your rhythm and enjoy the swim more.
The swim exit pontoon dips into the water so you can swim onto it before standing up. Lifeguards will be on hand to help you out. Once you have exited the water you will need to remove your wetsuit, place it in a bag provided, and cover a short distance on foot to Transition.
*If you do get into difficulty, lie on your back and raise your arm; a canoe lifeguard will come to you and if necessary arrange a safety boat to take you to the water’s edge.*
There is a water station on the way to Transition.
Swim Strokes
careful going up the steps to Be Transition as they can get wet.
Most people use front crawl or breast stroke. Back stroke is not permitted because it can be confused with someone indicating they are in difficulty.
*Goggles are compulsory*

The SFT Pool of Fame Just who are SFT helping?
Triathletes of all abilities
Swim Coaches everywhere. SFT have produced the first British Swimming Continuing Professional Development (CPD) module covering Openwater Swimming. This module has been written by head coach DAN BULLOCK and will help Coaches prepare swimmers for Openwater racing and is a great endorsement and recognition of 10years of excellence in coaching.
4 Kona Qualifiers for 2012 already, two 70.3 Worlds Qualifiers and numerous World and Europe AG medals through faster swimming. But It is not all about the fast guys though. “SFT helped me to go from being someone who dreamed of doing a triathlon but had a phobia of open water swimming, to coming out of the water at the Blenheim triathlon having swum a personal best. I felt ready, prepared and confident... in fact I couldn’t wait to get in the water” -
