June 4, 2011 • 1:00 p.m. • Whiting, Ind. 2011 GAMEDAY NEWS AND NOTES Oil City: Today’s doubleheader will be played at Oil City Stadium in Whiting, Ind. The name Oil City Stadium celebrates Whiting’s history as a refinery town tucked away in the northwest corner of the state for over 120 years. The BP Refinery, located just beyond the outfield fence, is a constant reminder of the blue collar attitude this town was built on. Oil City Stadium is also the site of the 2011 MCL All Star game on July 13. Undefeated Franchise: The CrackerJacks knocked off the
Chicago Zephyrs yesterday 12-6 in seven innings (called due to darkness). With the win, the ‘Jacks improved to 1-0 in 2011 and 1-0 in franchise history. Pitcher Stephen Taylor (1-0) got the win, allowing just one hit in five innings. First baseman Lendon Ehlmann picked up three hits and scored three runs for Will County, while centerfielder Scott Hull contributed three RBIs as well.
Team Chemistry: Manager Vern Hasty sought out college
teammates to fill the 2011 ‘Jacks roster to help build on-field chemistry and that chemistry was evident in yesterday’s win. All three Polk State College players, Chris Noble (third base), Colt Hankamer (shortstop) and Conor Szczerba (second base) got the start in the ‘Jacks infield. The three provided rally-starting hits at the plate to kickstart the offense as well as web gems in the field to back the dominant Taylor on the mound.
Season Opener: The Elgin Aces are playing its first games of 2011. After today, these two teams will meet again on June 26 for another doubleheader at 1 p.m. Looking Ahead: The CrackerJacks next take the field in a
highly anticipated exhibition game with the Chicago Bandits on June 7. They will then play 15 straight MCL games.
