Tourism Promotional Plan The first of the $16m Tourism Promotion Plan grant programs have been released, inviting applications. •

The Product and Experience Fund offers $2.075m in grants over two years of between $100,000 and $200,000 to develop market ready tourism experiences. Applications are now open and will close on the 24th January 2007.

The Co-operative Marketing Fund has two programs totalling $1.4m over two years. The 2007 program offers two lots of $350,000, tier one is available to regional tourism organisations for grants of $50,000 plus based on a dollar for dollar.

Tier two is available to industry and local tourism associations and is seeking dollar for dollar funds exceeding $5,000 for an individual business or $50,000 if sourcing funds from a range of industry partners. This program will be available to May 2007 or until funds are exhausted.

Cradle Coast Authority will be making application for funding under the TPP Product & Experience Fund program for the Food & Produce Strategy, the Mining Heritage Plan and the Wildlife Strategy. These projects will have a flow-on effect to the industry across the region and we would encourage you to be supportive of our efforts. We are however keen to support any sub-region or operator group in preparing their own applications for funding provided they are consistent with the aims and objectives of the program. All programs have strict assessment criteria. For further information visit the web site www.tpptasmania.com or contact wayne.bolton@tourism.tas.gov.au or ring (03) 6431 6285.

Tasmanian Event Management Guide The hundreds of festivals and events that happen right around the state can now benefit from a Tasmanian Event Management Guide (TEMG) launched in Hobart last week at the Southern Events Forum. The TEMG is a practical "how to" handbook for event organisers covering all the key areas necessary for successful event management: •

Design and concept development

Governance and administration

Marketing and promotions

Risk Management and compliance

Production and logistics

TEMG is a practical solution for event organisers and local governments. The guide covers all the main aspects of event management and comes with a companion folder and CD of templates to lead organisers through the process. Events Tasmania in partnership with the Regional Event Consultants from Totally South Tourism, Cradle Coast Authority and Northern Tasmanian Development identified the need for the development of a resource of this nature to support event growth. For further information on obtaining a copy of the guide, please contact Ben Bovill on (03) 6431 6285 or email bbovill@cradlecoast.com

Corinna to Re-open The former Corinna Resort is soon to re-open as “Corinna – at home in the wilderness” following a substantial redevelopment with 14 new units, walking tracks, hire boats, kayaks and a refit of the Arcadia II. Cradle Coast Authority recently arranged a media event at Wynyard to welcome the vessel back to the region to begin it’s new life on the Pieman River. The vessel will be providing day and evening cruises on the river and will provide a link in a full day four-wheel drive tour of Granville Harbour and the spectacular West Coast. For further information go to www.corinna.com.au

Regional Touring Guide At the time of writing the 2007 Tasmania’s North West Touring Guide is on the printing press and 120,000 copies will be delivered into store by the first week in December. The guide has been modified to reflect the new brand values through stories and new pictures, however time did not allow a complete rewrite. This will be undertaken prior to the 2008 edition. Cradle Coast Authority would like to acknowledge the support of the industry through advertising, particularly those communities who joined forces to produce advertorial pages promoting their destination. The publication will be distributed through the Tourism Tasmania call centre, the Tasmanian Visitor Information Network, aboard Spirit of Tasmania and at all airports, selected travel agents and promotional events.

The strategy has been driven by significant changes in consumer behaviour or the “new normal’ as it’s described in the document. This new normal will require significant changes in the way Tourism Tasmania does it’s business. The significant changes will be:•

the level and quality of market research,

the marketing of regional destinations in the interstate market,

encouraging Tasmania,

a significant increase in digital marketing; and

more focussed product development to meet the needs of the market.

Exhibition Connects Island Artists Mt Chappell Island 2005. Photograph: Grant Pitchford

Artists from Tasmania’s most isolated island communities will be celebrated in two unique exhibitions straddling Bass Strait, opening on King and Flinders Islands on December 1st and 9th. ‘Strait Across’ has been a year in the making and brings together a diverse group of 36 resident artists in an exchange of island identity expressed in a range of art forms from skincraft to soundscapes. Curator Lucia Rossi said the dialogue between artists from the islands began in earnest in early 2006 following funding support for the inter-island arts exchange from Tasmanian arts and community organizations and the islands’ local councils. “There was a real desire from artists on both islands to connect with each other and to generate a dialogue about the influence of island-ness on life and art, which has culminated with this exhibition” she said. “Curating Strait Across was at times a logistical nightmare, but one that was countered by the artists’ enthusiasm and the inherent resourcefulness that comes from living on an island.” It is hoped the exhibition will tour with Tasmanian Regional Arts to regional galleries on the Tasmanian and Australian mainlands in 2007/2008. “The works produced by the 36 participating artists has been quite extraordinary,” Ms Rossi said. “As well as more conventional painting, drawing, sculpture and photography, artists have used found and collected objects like sea glass and kelp to create exquisite works that speak strongly of their island environments.” Project manager Sally Marsden said the artists used local telehealth videoconferencing facilities to enable them to discuss the exhibition and the natural, spiritual, social and psychological influences on their work. “The artists live further apart from each other than they do from Tasmania or the mainland but there is a deep connection which carries through to the exhibitions. A DVD has been produced to enable works from both islands to be exhibited concurrently,” Ms Marsden said. Strait Across opens at the Flinders Island Strait Art Works Gallery at Whitemark on Friday December 1st at 5pm and at the King Island Cultural Centre in Currie December 9th at 4pm. 4

The exhibition has been supported by Arts Tasmania, CAST, Tasmanian Regional Arts, the Tasmanian Community Fund, Cradle Coast Authority and King and Flinders Island Councils. For further information contact: Lucia Rossi – Curator

Region successful with Local Tourism Grant Program Three applicants were successful with local tourism grants King Island picnic and visitor information area The Grassy township of King Island will be a haven for visitors to take a break or to find out things to do in the vicinity with a new picnic and visitor information area. A grant for $5,000 will contribute to the development of a BBQ area and interpretation of the local area in an adjoining shelter. The location is designed to take advantage of the food and produce experience established in nearby Grassy with the local produce highlighted available for purchase close by. A community based group, the project by King Island Tourism Inc will significantly enhance amenities in the township. Dudley Kenworthy Stamper Mill restoration A local icon in the Waratah-Wynyard municipality, the Tin Stamper Mill will find itself a new home. 5

The enthusiasm of a group of volunteers will restore the Mill to its former glory and a grant of $5,000 will facilitate its relocation. The Waratah-Wynyard Council will manage the project. Tasmania 's north west coast has a strong mining history and this project will complement the Mining Heritage Strategy developed by the Cradle Coast Authority. Plans for the Mill will see it operate as a working artifact and serve as an interpretation centre for Waratah's colourful mining past. Devils @ Cradle enhancements Visitors will have an even better chance of getting up close and personal with a Tasmanian Devil with improvements at Devils@Cradle. A grant of $5,000 will support the development of a free range enclosure and field monitoring program. The construction of a large scale free range enclosure and interpretive walking track will enhance viewing facilities at the site. It will also provide greater access to research and visitor viewing sites where feed stations are located with infra-red cameras to monitor devil behaviour. With significant benefits to the local community and visitors this project has strong environmental and conservation applications.
