Regional Tourism News

Tourism Forum – The X Factor Again thanks to strong support from the tourism industry, and in particular our sponsors, a very successful tourism forum was conducted in Devonport on Thursday 6th & Friday 7th September 2007. Approximately 150 delegates heard some excellent speakers identify what they felt was the X factor in delivering high quality visitor experiences. The dinner function at High Tide was a highlight of the forum with local produce being supplied and prepared by the Produce of Heaven group. Drysdale students assisted with the organisation and the waiting on the tables and the Devonport High School catering group provided packaged lunches for each of the break out sessions held at Ghost Rock Vineyard, The Australian Axeman’s Hall of Fame, Barringwood Park, The Edgewater Motor Inn and the Mersey Yacht Club.

Tasmania’s North West – Food Producers Cradle Coast Authority is working with a group of food producers who have been marketing themselves internationally under the banner Produce of Heaven. This network has similar objectives to the Cradle Coast Authorities, “Source to Sensation” food and produce strategy. They wish to lift the profile of their produce in selected markets – to have it acknowledged as premium produce, that warrants the extra price while stressing that it needs to be used and presented as a premium product rather than a commodity, as is too often the case. Those of who attended the Cradle Coast Tourism Forum dinner at High Tide was treated to this produce, prepared as fresh as possible and presented exquisitely. It was the X factor, it made the difference between a good meal and an experience. Future joint projects may include local, interstate and overseas promotions, the production of seasonal plates and recipes that will allow greater use be made of the regions premium produce. Our thanks go to the Produce of Heaven team, in particular Nigel Squibb of Tas Fresh who coordinated the event and supervised the preparation. Anyone requiring further

information about the Produce of Heaven network should contact Gail Richey, Richey Fishing g.richey@bigpond.net.au

Marketing Activities Cradle Coast Authorities new Marketing Manager Angela Taylor has hit the ground running and in the short time she has been here she has reviewed the regional marketing plan and obtained sign off from Tourism Tasmania for the TPP Co-operative Marketing Activities that will be undertaken over the next 12 months. Other activities under way include the rewriting and redesign of the regional tourism brochure. By the time you read this newsletter you should already have the received the advertising schedule. A new web presence is being designed to be launched in conjunction with the touring guide in early December 2007. The Cradle Coast brand logo, “Tasmania’s North West Where will the stories take you?” has been reworked slightly and a style manual produced that will allow operators to adopt the logo for their own use. On Monday 24th September the second edition of the Tasmania Guide appeared in the major daily newspapers, the Brisbane Courier Mail, The Adelaide Advertiser, The Sydney Telegraph and the Sun Herald in Melbourne. The 1.3 million copies of the guide contained a Tasmania’s North West promotion for a seven-day holiday package of the region. Readers enter via the specially developed web site http://www.tasmaniasnorthwest.com.au/ This newsletter is the last of its kind as a new tourism bulletin will be produced next month to fit with the new look and feel that is being developed for the regional guide, and the web presence.

Devonport Latrobe Tourism Association At the recent tourism forum it was identified that the Devonport Latrobe region was missing out on opportunities because of the lack of industry representation at a local and region level. Wolfgang Koch & Sue Elliott of the Edgewater Motor Inn convened an industry meeting on Wednesday 19th September that was attended by approximately 40 people. The meeting, facilitated by Ian Waller and addressed by John Dabner of the Stanley Tourism Association, resolved to set up a steering committee to develop some guidelines and framework for a tourism organisation. 2
