MEDIA RELEASE Wednesday, May 6, 2009 Cradle Coast NRM helps Councils’ quest to “weed the North West” Cradle Coast Natural Resource Management (NRM) has joined forces with the Tasmanian Skills Institute to support regional Councils in their quest to “weed the North West”. Mostly local government employees, the group spent the past two-days improving their ability to identify, manage and eradicate an array of local weed threats. According to Sue Botting, Acting Executive Officer of Cradle Coast NRM, a business unit of the Cradle Coast Authority, the Enviro Weed Control course ensured Council staff continued to improve their capacity for better weed control. “A mixture of field and class work, this course has been specifically designed to meet the needs of North West Tasmanian council personnel who are important managers of the community’s land and water assets,” Ms Botting said. “Weed control is quite complex – integrated weed management is important and includes learning how to safely prepare, handle and apply chemicals at the appropriate rate and at the right time”. The Enviro Weed Control course sits well within the Cradle Coast NRM’s philosophy that healthy regions rely on the wise management of natural resources. A further Cradle Coast NRM supported two-day Enviro Weed Control course targeting forestry workers will take place on May 20 and 21. Cradle Coast NRM Weed Hygiene information will be available from the Tasmania Farmers’ & Graziers’ Association (TFGA) exhibit at Agfest later this week, May 7, 8 and 9.
