Ten years of regional collaboration

This year marks a decade since the nine councils of North West Tasmania created the Cradle Coast Authority.

Resolving to establish a joint authority in 1999, the Burnie City, Central Coast, Circular Head, Devonport City, Kentish, King Island, Latrobe, Waratah‐Wynyard and West Coast Councils demonstrated a shared vision for the region which today is held up as an effective example of regional development and cooperation in Tasmania.

On behalf of the nine councils, the Cradle Coast Authority leads regional projects, promotes sustainable regional development and is a reference point for resolving regional issues. The member councils utilise the Authority for a range of services including: • conducting regional planning and research • identifying and developing externally funded projects and • representing and advocating the region’s interests.

The Cradle Coast Authority is also the North West’s regional tourism body and hosts the Cradle Coast Natural Resource Management (NRM) staff and Committee, a coordinated regional arrangement that provides synergies unique among the 56 NRM regions around Australia.

Current major projects managed by the Cradle Coast Authority include: – The federally funded Healthy Communities Initiative – Mining Heritage Tourism Strategy implementation – North West Coastal Pathway master‐plan – Regional Shared Services project and – The Regional Waste Management Group strategic plan. A summary of all of the 2009/10 regional projects is included in the Cradle Coast Authority annual report which will be presented for acceptance by Council Representatives at the Authority’s annual general meeting.

The Cradle Coast Authority annual general meeting will be held at the Waratah‐Wynyard council chambers from 11.00am – 12.00pm on Thursday 25 November. Copies of the Cradle Coast Authority annual report will be available at the meeting or can be obtained afterwards via the Authority’s website (www.cradlecoast.com/publications.html) or by calling the office on 03 6431 6285.

After the annual general meeting, a standard quarterly meeting of Representatives of the region’s councils will be held followed by an informal lunch commemorating the tenth anniversary of the Authority. Council Representatives, staff and current and past Mayors and board members have been invited to attend. Details of the event venue and running sheet are attached; we hope to see you there.
