MEDIA RELEASE 2 February 2011

Waratah women have all the right moves

A weekly exercise program lead by qualified Heart Foundation Heart Moves instructor Gareth Jubb Fitness and featuring special‐interest workshops for women will begin in Waratah on 7 February. The program known as Waratah Moves has been developed by Waratah‐Wynyard Council in partnership with the Tasmanian Department of Health and Human Services Women’s Health unit and the Heart Foundation. Waratah Moves is being offered for free as part of the Cradle Coast Authority’s federally funded Healthy Communities Initiative. Feedback from a Community Reference Group in Waratah revealed a need for organised exercise classes that would not only be a social outlet for local women but also provide access to educational workshops on nutrition and women’s health. Richard Muir‐Wilson, Community Development Officer at Waratah‐Wynyard Council, is pleased that the Council has been able to respond to the residents’ requests. “This program is the first of its kind in Waratah to combine physical exercise with healthy lifestyle education including nutrition and cooking tips.” Mr Muir‐Wilson said. “Places are limited so we’re encouraging women to register early and make the most of the potential long‐lasting benefits to their health.” Waratah Moves will be held at the Waratah Rural Transaction Centre on Mondays from 2.00 – 3.00pm commencing 7 February until May. Registrations for the free program are required and are now being taken at the Waratah Council office. Waratah Moves is one of many programs being implemented by Councils in the region based on the Cradle Coast Authority’s participation in the Australian Government’s Healthy Communities Initiative. All programs are aimed at encouraging healthy eating practices and lifestyles and reducing the incidence of chronic disease. End… The Healthy Communities Initiative is a federally funded COAG program to maximise participation in lifestyle health programs. Twelve Local Government Areas Australia‐wide were selected to participate in a pilot of the program, including North West Tasmania’s Cradle Coast Authority.
