MEDIA RELEASE 12 May 2011 Increased protection for Little Penguins Little Penguins in Sulphur Creek will soon be able to roam safely thanks to fencing repair works being conducted by Cradle Coast NRM, TasRail and the Central Coast Council. The one kilometre fence along the railway line at Sulphur Creek is being upgraded to securely separate the resident penguin colonies from the railway and busy Bass Highway. The fence will receive a total make-over with rock-removal, addition of steel droppers, fence tightening and filling of any gaps under which the Little Penguins could crawl. Work will be carried out by Central Coast Council and Cradle Coast NRM staff under the supervision of a TasRail track safety protection officer. Repair works will take place on Monday 16th and Tuesday 17th May and be completed on Tuesday 7th and Wednesday 8th June. Timing of the works has been carefully planned to coincide with the winter months when Little Penguins have finished raising their chicks and have completed their moult. The penguin fence was originally constructed in 1999 by local community groups, with the much appreciated support of TasRail and Coastcare funding.
