MEDIA RELEASE 16 April 2010 Launch of the first state wide recycling awareness campaign: Recycle, Tasmania! Tasmania’s first state wide recycling awareness campaign will launch on Sunday 18 th April with television, radio and press advertisements encouraging residents to increase their recycling efforts and reduce the volume of recyclable waste going into Tasmanian landfills. The campaign has been developed under the banner ‐When I recycle a little, together we achieve a lot – with funding from the National Packaging Covenant and contributions from the Cradle Coast Authority, Dulverton Waste Management, Northern Tasmania Waste Management, Southern Waste Strategy Authority and Veolia Environmental Services. This is the first time that the organisations have collaborated in a state‐wide awareness campaign to promote the benefits of recycling including reduced landfill, and the cost and energy savings of reusing materials. The Cradle Coast Authority has been coordinating the campaign development and Executive Chairman, Roger Jaensch, is pleased that the results of the state‐wide collaboration will be released this weekend. “Residents around the state have adopted recycling and are making good use of their local recycling services with around 65,000 tonnes of materials being recycled a year,” Mr Jaensch said. “However, with changing technologies and new packaging materials, there’s a growing range of material that can be recycled. It seemed timely that the state’s recycling and waste management resources come together to develop this campaign and boost recycling rates in Tasmania even further. As the campaign motto says, together we can achieve a lot.” Dulverton Waste Management Authority is a member of the campaign’s project team and Chief Executive Officer, Shane Eberhardt, agrees that Tasmanian’s can lift their recycling levels even further. “Recent studies have shown that 25 per cent of the content in our garbage bins is actually recyclable,” Mr Eberhardt said. “If households recycle fully, in one year they could save the equivalent energy of watching a flat screen TV for 2500 hours or driving a car 1500 kilometres. Collectively, that can make a tremendous difference.” The campaign commences on Tasmanian commercial radio and television stations, plus in The Examiner, Mercury and The Advocate newspapers from Sunday. Also supporting the campaign will be the launch of a website, www.recycletasmania.com.au where further information and resources are available for residents. The campaign creative execution was carried out by Clemenger Tasmania. End… Media Contacts: Roger Jaensch Executive Chairman, Cradle Coast Authority Ph: 0438 316 285
