MEDIA RELEASE Embargo until 24 August 2011

Farm Shelterbelt Program launches in the Cradle Coast Farmers in North West Tasmania can now apply for funding to assist the preparation and planting of native shelterbelts on their properties. Under the Cradle Coast NRM Farm Shelterbelt Program, successful applicants will receive assistance with site assessment and the development of individual Shelterbelt Plans. Funds can be used towards seedling purchase, materials and/or protective fencing. Farm shelterbelts provide benefits for farm production and biodiversity including reducing wind-based crop damage, increasing livestock production and soil stability, improving irrigation efficiency and providing habitat for native birds and animals. Land Coordinator at Cradle Coast NRM, Hannah Sadler, said that the benefits of shelterbelts have long been recognised in farming landscapes but unfortunately some poorly designed shelterbelts are not performing as well as could be expected. “There are some poorly designed shelterbelts around the region causing headaches for farmers because they are in the wrong position, using the wrong tree species or haven’t been adequately planned before planting,” Ms Sadler said. “This project takes past lessons and works with farmers to ensure that, in 25 years’ time, these shelterbelts are still an asset. When designed properly there is no denying that shelterbelts really can be a farmer’s best friend.” North West farmers can find details of funding conditions and a downloadable application form for the Farm Shelterbelt Program from www.cradlecoastnrm.com. Applications open on 24 August and close at 4:00pm Monday 12th of September 2011. Enquiries are welcome by calling Hannah Sadler at Cradle Coast NRM on 6431 6285. A free copy of the booklet: Native Shelterbelts for North-West Tasmania, Increasing Productivity and Biodiversity on Farms is also available by calling Cradle Coast NRM.
