MEDIA RELEASE

7 February 2012

Charting a course for a reinvigorated regional tourism industry

A study into the state of the Cradle Coast region’s tourism industry and a paper examining alternate structures for Regional Tourism Organisations are being used to guide the future of regional tourism in the North West. Tourism operators, associations, Councils and other interested stakeholders are attending workshops across the region to discuss their response to the study documents. The feedback will help chart the implementation course for a regional tourism structure to replace the North West Coast and Western Wilderness tourism marketing zones. The studies were commissioned by the Cradle Coast Authority in partnership with Tourism Tasmania following a state‐wide assessment which revealed more than 90 groups working on regional tourism promotion, often with overlapping responsibilities. Presentation and discussion sessions are being held in Devonport, Wynyard, Smithton, Strahan, Queenstown, Sheffield and on King Island until 15 February. The State of the Region: Tourism in the Cradle Coast report and a discussion paper on the role and structure of Regional Tourism Organisations are available from the Noticeboard page of the Cradle Coast Authority website (www.cradlecoast.com). Industry enquiries are welcome by calling the Cradle Coast Authority’s Regional Tourism Development Manager, Ian Waller, on 0419 372 400.

End… Cradle Coast tourism works with the tourism and associated industries, Councils, State Government and visitor centres to create a regional tourism sector that delivers economic, social and environmental benefits to the Cradle Coast. Cradle Coast tourism is a unit of the Cradle Coast Authority. Media Contacts: Ian Waller ‐ Ph: 0419 372 400 Amanda Wilson ‐ Ph: 6431 6285 Regional Tourism Development Manager Communications Manager
